RESUMO

The effects of a novel direct-fed microbial (DFM) on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, digestibility, ruminal morphology, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) profile of finishing steers were evaluated. Single-source Angus-crossbred yearling steers (n = 144; initial body weight (BW) = 371 ±â€…19 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design. Steers were blocked by initial BW and randomly assigned to treatments (12 pens/treatment; 4 steers/pen). Treatments included (A) CONTROL (no DFM, tylosin, or monensin, (B) MONTY (monensin sodium [330 mg/animal-daily] and tylosin phosphate [90 mg/animal-daily]), and (C) MONPRO (monensin sodium [same as previous] and Lactobacillus salivarius L28 [1 × 106 CFU/animal-daily]). Treatments were included in a steam-flaked corn-based finisher diet offered once daily using a clean-bunk management for ~149 d. The digestibility assessment was performed from days 70 to 74. Ruminal fluid and rumen tissue samples were collected at the slaughter for VFA profile and papillae morphology analyses, respectively. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS with pen serving as the experimental unit, treatment as fixed effect, and BW block as random effect. Steers offered MONPRO had on average 5.3% less (P < 0.01) dry matter intake (9.56 kg/d) compared with either CONTROL (10.16 kg/d) or MONTY (9.96 kg/d). The carcass-adjusted final BW (613 kg; P = 0.23), overall average daily gain (1.64 kg/d; P = 0.23), and gain-efficiency (0.165; P = 0.61) were not affected by treatments. Steers offered CONTROL had greater (P < 0.01) marbling score and tended (P = 0.06) to have less carcasses grading Select and tended (P = 0.10) to have more carcasses grading Upper-Choice, while other carcass characteristics and liver-abscesses were not affected (P ≥ 0.23) by treatments. The digestibility of nutrients (P ≥ 0.13) and the ruminal VFA profile (P ≥ 0.12) were not affected by treatments. Steers offered MONPRO tended (P = 0.09) to have 16% greater average papillae number compared to other treatments. Yearlings offered finishing diets containing L. salivarius L28 plus monensin did not affect growth performance, digestibility, or ruminal VFA, but reduced feed intake. Carcass quality was negatively affected by treatments, while animals consuming L. salivarius L28 and monensin tended to improve ruminal morphology. Current findings in ruminal morphology and feed intake may warrant further assessment of diets containing L. salivarius L28 on beef cattle food safety aspects.


Antimicrobial resistance is a growing concern to public health and medically important antibiotics have been listed in the Veterinary Feed Directive. Nutritional technologies, such as direct-fed microbials, are being increasingly studied for the development of an effective use on beef cattle production systems. The newly isolated strain of Lactobacillus salivarius L28 has demonstrated pathogenic inhibition of Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Listeria monocytogenes on in vitro assessments. The potential benefits have warranted the exploration of L. salivarius L28 in a feedlot setting. Single-source Angus-crossbred yearling steers were offered steam-flaked corn-based finishing diets containing no feed additive, or either a combination of tylosin plus monensin or L. salivarius L28 plus monensin. Steers offered L. salivarius L28 plus monensin consumed 5.3% less feed compared with other treatments, while other growth performance variables and the digestibility of nutrients were not affected. Carcasses from cattle supplemented with monensin had slightly lower carcass quality grades than those not supplemented with monensin. Lactobacillus salivarius L28 plus monensin tended to improve steers ruminal morphology. Current findings may warrant further food safety assessments when cattle are offered diets containing L. salivarius L28.

Effects of dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) on ruminal fermentation, degradation kinetics, and feeding behavior of steers offered annual (Eragrostis tef; TEFF) or perennial (Bothriochloa bladhii; OWB) grass hay were evaluated. Ruminally cannulated Angus crossbred steers (n = 6; body weight [BW] = 304 ± 11 kg) were assigned to a 4 × 6 unbalanced Latin square design with four treatments arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial: hay type (OWB or TEFF) and DDGS supplementation (0% or 0.5% BW [dry matter {DM} basis]). Steers had ad libitum access to hay. Periods consisted of a 14-d adaptation followed by 7 d of collection. Residues from the in situ incubations (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 h post-feeding) were fitted to a first-order kinetics model using the NLIN procedure of SAS. The DDGS decreased (P < 0.01) TEFF DM intake (DMI) by 11.3%, while not affecting DMI of OWB. The greatest DMI was observed for steers supplemented with DDGS, regardless of forage, and least in steers consuming OWB without DDGS (hay type × DDGS; P = 0.03). Non-supplemented steers spent more (P < 0.01) time eating hay. Digestibility of DM tended (P = 0.06) to increase with DDGS supplementation. A hay type × DDGS interaction was observed (P ≤ 0.05) on ruminal effective degradable fractions. The rate of degradation, soluble fraction, and the potentially degradable fraction of organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber (ADF) increased (P ≤ 0.05), while the undegradable fraction of all components decreased (P ≤ 0.01) when steers were offered TEFF compared to OWB. Ruminal DM, OM, and ADF degradation lag-time increased (P ≤ 0.02) in steers offered OWB. Ruminal degradation kinetics were not (P ≥ 0.17) independently affected by DDGS supplementation. Average ruminal pH of steers offered TEFF (P < 0.01) and those offered DDGS (P < 0.01) were lower than OWB and non-supplemented steers. Total concentration of VFA tended (P = 0.09) to increase when DDGS was provided with OWB, while decreasing when TEFF was offered. The acetate:propionate increased (P < 0.01) with DDGS supplementation due to a decrease (P = 0.03) in propionate. Ruminal NH3-N was greater (P = 0.03) in steers offered TEFF compared to OWB, and those supplemented with DDGS (P = 0.03). An annual, in place of a conventional, perennial hay improved intake and digestion of nutrients, without affecting feeding behavior. The supplementation with DDGS appears to affect forage intake, ruminal degradation, and feeding behavior, although not independent of forage quality.

The effects of dietary pretreatment with fibrolytic enzyme-based cocktail were evaluated in 2 studies: (1) in vitro true digestibility; and (2) intake, digestibility, feeding behavior, and ruminal fermentation of beef steers fed growing diets. For the in vitro assessment, the ruminal inoculum was collected from 2 steers (BW = 543 ± 45 kg; 4-h after feeding; growing diets) and enzymes included or not (Trichoderma reesei fermentation extract; 0.75 µL/g of substrate DM). Within in vitro batches (n = 4), 12 substrates were incubated and in vitro true nutrient digestibility was evaluated. For study 2, 5 ruminally cannulated beef steers (BW = 520 ± 30 kg) were used in a 5 × 4 unbalanced Latin square using a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments: (a) diet quality (high = HQ; and low = LQ) and (b) enzyme inclusion (0 or 0.75 mL/kg of diet DM). Steers were fed ad libitum during four 21-d periods consisting of 14-d of adaptation and 7-d of collections. An enzyme × substrate was observed (P < 0.01), in which DM, OM, and NDF disappearance of sorghum grain increased with enzymes addition. Addition of enzymes increased (P < 0.01) ADF digestibility for all substrates. No diet quality × enzyme (P ≥ 0.18) was observed for intake variables in study 2. Enzyme-fed steers increased (P ≤ 0.05) intake of DM, digestible DM, NDF, and ADF compared with steers not fed fibrolytic enzymes. Addition of enzyme did not affect (P ≥ 0.28) apparent total tract digestibility of beef steers. Steers fed HQ diets consumed more (P ≤ 0.04) DM, digestible DM and OM, and less (P ≤ 0.03) total and digestible fiber than steers fed LQ diets. Ruminal pH average decreased (P = 0.01) for steers fed HQ or enzyme-fed diets compared with other treatments. A tendency (P = 0.06) toward improved total VFA was observed on enzyme-fed steers with HQ diets, but not for LQ diets. The molar proportion of ruminal propionate increased (P = 0.01) when steers were fed enzyme. Steers fed HQ diets had greater (P < 0.01) propionate and valerate molar proportions, lower (P < 0.01) acetate and acetate:propionate ratio than steers fed LQ diets. In vitro methane and total gas production were not affected (P ≥ 0.50) by dietary treatments. Fibrolytic enzymes positively affected digestion of multiple roughage sources commonly fed to cattle and might have additional benefit when used on unprocessed sorghum grain. Fibrolytic enzymes in beef cattle growing diets stimulated intake and generated positive impacts on ruminal fermentation.
