Flavones are major compounds found in several parts of Oroxylum indicum (O. indicum). The quantification of multiple components by one marker (QAMS) method and the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method were developed for the quantitative analysis of extracts from the young fruits, green mature fruits, dry pod coats and seeds of O. indicum. Oroxin A, oroxin B and chrysin-7-O-glucuronide were identified in the O. indicum extracts. Oroxylin A and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were isolated and structurally identified from the pod coat and young fruit extracts, respectively. From the HPLC analysis of the seven major flavones in the extracts, baicalin was the major compound in all extracts investigated (0.4-11% w/w of the extract). All flavone contents were low in the young fruit extract (<1% w/w of the extract). The green mature fruit and dry pod coat extracts showed similar constituent compositions. They contained small amounts of baicalin and oroxylin A, which were found only in these two extracts. Oroxylin A could be used as a marker to indicate the maturity of O. indicum fruits, while 5-hydroxymethylfurfural could be used as a marker for the young fruits. Baicalin was found to be a suitable single marker to calculate the contents of all flavones in the O. indicum extracts.

Six different furanocoumarins were isolated from the aerial parts of Ducrosia anethifolia and tested in vitro for plant cell elongation in etiolated wheat coleoptile. They were also tested for their ability to control three different weeds: ribwort plantain, annual ryegrass, and common purslane. These compounds exhibited strong inhibition of plant cell elongation. In the case of (+)-heraclenin, the IC50 was lower than 20 µM, indicating a better inhibition than the positive control Logran®. Computational experiments for docking and molecular dynamics revealed for the investigated furanocoumarins bearing an epoxide moiety an improved fitting and stronger interaction with the auxin-like TIR1 ubiquitin ligase. Furthermore, the formed inhibition complex remained also stable during dynamic evaluation. Bidental interaction at the active site, along with an extended hydrogen-bond lifetime, explained the enhanced activity of the epoxides. The in vitro weed bioassay results showed that Plantago lanceolata was the most affected weed for germination, root, and shoot development. In addition, (+)-heraclenin displayed better inhibition values than positive control even at 300 µM concentration.

Based on data from a previous ethnobotanical study in northern Angola, phytochemical investigations into the methanolic rhizomes and roots extract of Cyperus articulatus, monitored by in vitro assays, resulted in the recovery of 12 sesquiterpenes, 3 stilbenes, 2 phenolic acids, 1 monoterpene, and 1 flavonoid. Among them, 14 compounds were isolated for the first time from this species. Their inhibitory potential against nitric oxide (NO) production, as well as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, was evaluated in LPS-treated J774A.1 murine macrophages. Especially, both stilbene dimer trans-scirpusin B and trimer cyperusphenol B showed promising inhibitory activity against the production of the inflammatory mediator, NO, in a concentration-dependent manner (10−1 µM). The obtained data are the first results confirming the anti-inflammatory potential of C. articulatus and support its indigenous use as a traditional remedy against inflammation-related disorders.

This study presents the first ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography-diode array detector (UHPSFC-DAD) assay for simultaneous quantitation of secoiridoids, iridoids, xanthones, and xanthone glycosides in Gentiana lutea L. Separation was reached within 12 min on an Acquity UPC2 BEH 2-EP column using CO2 and methanol with 5.5% water as mobile phases. Method validation for nine selected marker compounds (gentisin, isogentisin, swertiamarin, sweroside, gentiopicroside, loganic acid, amarogentin, gentioside, and its isomer) confirmed the assay's sensitivity, linearity, precision, and accuracy. The practical applicability was proven by the analysis of 13 root specimens and 10 commercial liquid preparations (seven liqueurs and three clear spirits). In all root batches, the secoiridoid gentiopicroside dominated (2.1-5.6%) clearly over all other metabolites. In the liqueurs, the metabolite content and distribution were extremely variable: while gentiopicroside was the main compound in four liqueurs, sweroside dominated in one preparation and loganic acid in two others. In contrast, measurable amounts of the metabolites were not detected in any of the examined clear spirits.

Chronic inflammation results from excessive pro-inflammatory signaling and the failure to resolve the inflammatory reaction. Lipid mediators orchestrate both the initiation and resolution of inflammation. Switching from pro-inflammatory to pro-resolving lipid mediator biosynthesis is considered as efficient strategy to relieve chronic inflammation, though drug candidates exhibiting such features are unknown. Starting from a library of Vietnamese medical plant extracts, we identified isomers of the biflavanoid 8-methylsocotrin-4'-ol from Dracaena cambodiana, which limit inflammation by targeting 5-lipoxygenase and switching the lipid mediator profile from leukotrienes to specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM). Elucidation of the absolute configurations of 8-methylsocotrin-4'-ol revealed the 2S,γS-isomer being most active, and molecular docking studies suggest that the compound binds to an allosteric site between the 5-lipoxygenase subdomains. We identified additional subordinate targets within lipid mediator biosynthesis, including microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase-1. Leukotriene production is efficiently suppressed in activated human neutrophils, macrophages, and blood, while the induction of SPM biosynthesis is restricted to M2 macrophages. The shift from leukotrienes to SPM was also evident in mouse peritonitis in vivo and accompanied by a substantial decrease in immune cell infiltration. In summary, we disclose a promising drug candidate that combines potent 5-lipoxygenase inhibition with the favorable reprogramming of lipid mediator profiles.

The extract of Elsholtzia ciliata aerial parts was subjected to bio-guided isolation using the intercellular ROS reduction in J774A.1 macrophages to monitor the anti-oxidative activity. Fifteen compounds were isolated from the active fractions including eleven flavonoids (vitexin, pedalin, luteolin-7-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside, apigenin-5-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside, apigenin-7-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside, chrysoeriol-7-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside, 7,3'-dimethoxyluteolin-6-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside, luteolin, 5,6,4'-trihydroxy-7,3'-dimethoxyflavone, 5-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxyflavone (compound 13), 5-hydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone); three hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (caffeic acid, 4-(E)-caffeoyl-l-threonic acid, 4-O-(E)-p-coumaroyl-l-threonic acid) and one fatty acid (α-linolenic acid). The biological evaluation of these compounds (10-2.5 µm) indicated that all of them exerted good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, in particular compound 13.

Natural products comprise a rich reservoir for innovative drug leads and are a constant source of bioactive compounds. To find pharmacological targets for new or already known natural products using modern computer-aided methods is a current endeavor in drug discovery. Nature's treasures, however, could be used more effectively. Yet, reliable pipelines for the large-scale target prediction of natural products are still rare. We developed an in silico workflow consisting of four independent, stand-alone target prediction tools and evaluated its performance on dihydrochalcones (DHCs)-a well-known class of natural products. Thereby, we revealed four previously unreported protein targets for DHCs, namely 5-lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase-1, 17ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3, and aldo-keto reductase 1C3. Moreover, we provide a thorough strategy on how to perform computational target predictions and guidance on using the respective tools.

The genus Dionysia, belonging to the Primulaceae family, encompasses more than 50 species worldwide with a center of diversity located in the arid Irano-Turanian mountains. In this study, a phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts of D. diapensifolia Bioss. led to the isolation of 24 phenolic compounds 1-7 and 9-25, and one sesquiterpenoid 8. Compound 1 was identified as new natural product, while isolation of 2 and 3, already known as synthetic products, from a natural source is reported for the first time in the present study. Isolation of compound 8 from a Dionysia species and indeed the whole Primulaceae family is reported for the first time too. Structure elucidation was performed by extensive spectroscopic analyses (1D-, 2D-NMR, and MS), and by comparison with reported literature data. Furthermore, DP4+ chemical shift probability calculations were performed to establish the relative configuration of compound 1. Additionally, subfractions obtained by liquid-liquid extraction of the methanolic extract of the plant, and subsequently the isolated new and selected known compounds 1-4, 6, 8-11 obtained from the diethyl ether subfraction were investigated for their inhibitory effect on NO release and iNOS and COX-2 expression in J774A.1 murine macrophages. The results showed a potential anti-inflammatory activity of the obtained subfractions, of which the diethyl ether subfraction was the most active one in inhibiting NO release and COX-2 expression (p < 0.001). Among the investigated isolated compounds, compound 4 significantly (p < 0.001) inhibited NO release and iNOS and COX-2 expression in a comparable manner like the used positive controls (L-NAME and indomethacin, respectively). Moreover, other isolated substances displayed moderate to high inhibitory activities, illustrating the potential anti-inflammatory activity of Dionysia diapensifolia.

Human pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive types of cancer, with a high mortality rate. Due to the high tolerance of such cancer cells to nutrient starvation conditions, they can survive in a hypovascular tumor microenvironment. In this study, the dichloromethane extract of the roots of Ferula hezarlalehzarica showed potent preferential cytotoxic activity with a PC50 value of 0.78 µg/mL. Phytochemical investigation of this extract led to the isolation of 18 compounds, including one new sesquiterpenoid (6) and one new monoterpenoid (18). All isolated compounds were evaluated for their preferential cytotoxicity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells by employing an antiausterity strategy. Among them, ferutinin (2) was identified as the most active compound, with a PC50 value of 0.72 µM. In addition, the real-time effect of ferutinin (2) and compound 6 against PANC-1 cells, exposed to a nutrient-deprived medium (NDM), showed cell shrinkage, leading to cancer cell death within a short period of exposure. Compounds 2 and 6 also inhibited colony formation of PANC-1 cells. The present study indicates that the dichloromethane extract of the roots of F. hezarlalehzarica is a rich source of bioactive compounds for targeting PANC-1 cells.

Thonningia sanguinea is a parasitic herb widely used in traditional African medicine. Dihydrochalcone glucosides (unsubstituted, substituted with hexahydroxydiphenoyl or galloyl moieties) are the main constituents in the subaerial parts of this plant. In the present study, purification of the six major compounds from a methanol extract of the plant's subaerial parts was achieved by centrifugal partition chromatography. A first dimension centrifugal partition chromatography separation with the solvent system methyl tert-butyl ether/1,2-dimethoxyethane/water (1:2:1) in the ascending mode enabled the isolation of the two major bioactive compounds thonningianin A and B from 350 mg of methanol extract within only 16 min with respectable yields (25.7 and 21.1 mg), purities (87.1 and 85%), and recoveries (71.2 and 70.4%). Using a multiple heart-cutting strategy, the remaining four major dihydrochalcone glucosides of the extract were further separated in a second dimension centrifugal partition chromatography with the solvent system ethyl acetate/1,2-dimethoxyethane/water (2:1:1) in the descending mode with high purities (88.9-98.8%).

The anti-melanogenic principle of peony (Paeonia officinalis subsp. officinalis) seeds was elucidated via activity-guided isolation. Resveratroloside (trans-resveratrol-4'-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside) was found to be the main metabolite of P. officinalis subsp. officinalis seeds and its tyrosinase inhibiting activity was confirmed via an enzymatic assay. Furthermore, the in vitro activity and the therapeutic window were studied employing the murine melanoma cell line B16F10. The results from the conducted stability assay and the high content of resveratroloside in the seeds (i.e. 10.4% dw) motivated us to push the extract forward to an in vivo tolerance assay. A clinical study with forty Caucasian participants proofed a good skin-tolerance with high moisture effect and reduction of pores.

Thonnigia sanguinea is a plant widely used in traditional African medicine against a variety of diseases. The obligate parasite is growing throughout tropical African forests and utilizes a large variety of hosts. Dihydrochalcone glucoside derivatives isolated from the subaerial parts of this plant were identified as potential antidiabetic lead compounds. In this study, an ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatographic method coupled with a photodiode array detector was developed for the quantitation of six major dihydrochalcone derivatives. The analytes were baseline separated in complex samples within 14 minutes on a Phenomenex Luna Omega 1.6 µm C18 column using a mobile phase consisting of water and acetonitrile (each + 0.01% trifluoroacetic acid) in gradient elution. Method validation confirmed the selectivity, linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9992), precision (inter-day ≤ 1.98%, intraday ≤ 2.00%), and accuracy (recovery rates of 97.4 - 106.3% for all analytes). At 280 nm, the LODs and LOQs were found to be lower than 1.42 and 4.30 µg/mL, respectively. Eight plant batches from the northern Angolan province of Uíge (collected in the wild or bought on markets) were extracted with methanol using an ultrasound-assisted extraction protocol and subsequently analyzed with the validated method. Results indicated high contents of dihydrochalcone glucosides in all eight samples. Most notably, the two bioactive constituents thonningianin A and B were present in fairly large amounts (2.42 - 5.35 w%).

In the course of this project, 133 plants were evaluated on their ability to inhibit tyrosinase, a key enzyme in melanogenesis. The screening was performed by means of a HPTLC autographic assay, resulting in the selection of three plants, Asplenium trichomanes, Pinus uncinata, and Scutellaria altissima, with promising tyrosinase inhibiting activities. With the aid of the HPTLC assay, it was not only possible to select the most interesting plant extracts, but also to monitor the activity-guided fractionation which, in a relatively short time period, led to the isolation of active principles. Benzoic acid, roseoside, and dihydrovomifoliol-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside could be identified as tyrosinase inhibitors present in P. uncinata. Globularin turned out to be the active principle of S. altissima, and 4-ethenylphenyl 6-O-(6-deoxy-α-l-mannopyranosyl)-ß-d-glucopyranoside was detected as tyrosinase inhibitor of A. trichomanes. The pure compounds were tested also in a 96 well-plate assay in order to determine their IC50 values. The lowest IC50 value (42 µm) could be obtained for globularin, whereas the other compounds, e. g., benzoic acid exhibited a rather high IC50 value (IC50 =552 µm). This stood in clear contrast to the autographic assay, but is has to be taken into account that the outcome of the autography assay is not only depending on the IC50 value of a compound, but also on the content of the respective constituent in the extract.

Eurycoma longifolia Jack (Tongkat Ali, Simaroubaceae) is a medicinal plant endemic to South-East Asia. For centuries, different parts of the plant have been used as a natural remedy to treat fever, hypertension, or sexual insufficiency. Today, Eurycoma longifolia preparations are commercially available and advertised to enhance athletic performance and muscle strength. Several studies have demonstrated a testosterone-boosting effect that might be caused by the release of free testosterone from the sex-hormone-binding globulin. To date, many phytochemical constituents of Eurycoma longifolia root extracts have been identified and physiological effects have been examined, while studies on their biotransformation and monitoring are still lacking. Within this study, eurycomalide C, eurycomalactone, 5,6-dehydro-eurycomalactone, longilactone, 14,15ß-dihydroklaieanone, 11-dehydroklaieanone, 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one, and 9-methoxycanthin-6-one isolated from E. longifolia root were incubated with liver microsomes. Respective metabolites were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem (high-resolution) mass spectrometry. The compounds were chosen based on their potential androgenic effects (estimated by in vitro assays), their concentrations in plant extracts, and presumptive metabolic pathways. Hydroxylated phase I metabolites were only observed for 5,6-dehydro-eurycomalactone, 11-dehydroklaieanone, 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one, and 9-methoxycanthin-6-one. Moreover, an O-demethylated metabolite of 9-methoxycanthin-6-one was found. Besides, the glucuronide of 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one was detected after in vitro glucuronidation using liver microsomes. The in vitro generated metabolites were comparable to that detected in urine and serum after a single ingestion of either 9-methoxycanthin-6-one or an Eurycoma longifolia root extract. Hence, 9-methoxycanthin-6-one, its glucuronide, and the glucuronide of its O-demethylated biotransformation product are proposed to be the most suitable targets for detection of 9-methoxycanthin-6-one or Tongkat Ali application in urine and serum.

This work describes the seasonal variation of metabolites of polar extracts of carvone and linalool chemotypes, identified by GC-MS analyses of the essential oils. A methodology was elaborated in order to obtain a seasonal variation in the chemical composition of leaf employing HPLC-DAD. Acteoside, isoacteoside, geneposidic acid, 8-epi-loganin, mussaenoside, luteolin 7-O-glucoside, apigenin 7-O-glucuronide and tricin 7-O-diglucuronide have been isolated and identified for validation procedures and chromatographic analysis. Geneposidic acid was presented in all samples, in contrast to the 8-epi-loganin and, mussaenoside which were presented only in the carvone-chemotype. Acteoside was the major metabolite detected from July to November while tricin-7-O-diglucuronide was the major compound in all other months. Besides, phenylpropanoids are predominant in winter and flavonoids in summer season.

Six new and four known dihydrochalcone glucoside derivatives (1-10), the phenylpropanoid coniferin (11), and the lignans (+)-pinoresinol (12) and lariciresinol (13) were isolated from the subaerial plant parts of Thonningia sanguinea in the course of a screening campaign for new antidiabetic lead compounds. The structures of the new substances were elucidated by HRESIMS, NMR, GC-MS, and ECD data evaluation. 2'- O-(3-Galloyl-4,6- O- Sa-hexahydroxydiphenoyl-ß-d-glucopyranosyl)-3-hydroxyphloretin (4), 2'- O-(4,6- O- Sa-hexahydroxydiphenoyl-ß-d-glucopyranosyl)phloretin (5), 2'- O-(3- O-galloyl-4,6- O- Sa-hexahydroxydiphenoyl-ß-d-glucopyranosyl)phloretin (6), and thonningianin B (9) showed moderate protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B inhibition in an enzyme assay (IC50 values ranging from 19 to 25 µM), whereas thonningianin A (10) was identified as a more potent inhibitor (IC50 = 4.4 µM). The observed activity differences could be explained by molecular docking experiments. The activity of 10 could further be confirmed in HEPG2 liver carcinoma cells, where the compound was able to increase the level of phosphorylated insulin receptors in a concentration-dependent manner.

RESUMO

There is a rapid increase in the percentage of elderly people in Europe. Consequently, the prevalence of age-related diseases will also significantly increase. Therefore, the main goal of MediHealth, an international research project, is to introduce a novel approach for the discovery of active agents of food plants from the Mediterranean diet and other global sources that promote healthy ageing. To achieve this goal, a series of plants from the Mediterranean diet and food plants from other origins are carefully selected and subjected to in silico, cell-based, in vivo (fly and mouse models), and metabolism analyses. Advanced analytical techniques complement the bio-evaluation process for the efficient isolation and identification of the bioactive plant constituents. Furthermore, pharmacological profiling of bioactive natural products, as well as the identification and synthesis of their metabolites, is carried out. Finally, optimization studies are performed in order to proceed to the development of innovative nutraceuticals, dietary supplements or herbal medicinal products. The project is based on an exchange of researchers between nine universities and four companies from European and non-European countries, exploiting the existing complementary multidisciplinary expertise. Herein, the unique and novel approach of this interdisciplinary project is presented.

NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) has recently been implicated as driving force in cellular senescence. Thus, there is growing interest to develop Nox4 inhibitors, which might be valuable agents for cosmeceutical applications. Alpine plants represent a valuable source for the identification of novel bioactive natural products with anti-ageing effects, especially substances that protect plants against UV radiation, which is also known to contribute to the ageing of human skin. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify novel Nox4 inhibitors from alpine plants. Within an initial screening of extracts of alpine plants on their ability to inhibit Nox4 activity in HEK cells, the methanolic extract of the subaerial parts of Lycopus europaeus showed a strong inhibition of Nox4 (81% chemiluminescence quenching) and a simultaneously high cell viability (91% vitality). Rosmarinic acid was isolated and identified as the major compound in this bioactive extract. It showed a dose dependent inhibitory activity on Nox4 with an IC50 of 1 µM. Moreover, it also showed a significant inhibitory activity on Nox2 in the low micromolar range, whereas no inhibition of Nox5 was detected. Further investigations confirmed that the observed effects of rosmarinic acid on Nox2 and Nox4 are real inhibitory activities, and not due to ROS scavenging effects. Therefore, L. europaeus, which we demonstrated to be a good source of rosmarinic acid, has great potential for usage in cosmeceutical products with anti-ageing activity.

SCOPE: Aberrant vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation is involved in atherosclerotic plaque formation and restenosis. Mediterranean spices have been reported to confer cardioprotection, but their direct influence on VSMCs has largely not been investigated. This study aims at examining rosmarinic acid (RA) and 11 related constituents for inhibition of VSMC proliferation in vitro, and at characterizing the most promising compound for their mode of action and influence on neointima formation in vivo. METHODS AND RESULTS: RA, rosmarinic acid methyl ester (RAME), and caffeic acid methyl ester inhibit VSMC proliferation in a resazurin conversion assay with IC50 s of 5.79, 3.12, and 6.78 µm, respectively. RAME significantly reduced neointima formation in vivo in a mouse femoral artery cuff model. Accordingly, RAME leads to an accumulation of VSMCs in the G0 /G1 cell-cycle phase, as indicated by blunted retinoblastoma protein phosphorylation upon mitogen stimulation and inhibition of cyclin-dependent kinase 2 in vitro. CONCLUSION: RAME represses PDGF-induced VSMC proliferation in vitro and reduces neointima formation in vivo. These results recommend RAME as an interesting compound with VSMC-inhibiting potential. Future metabolism and pharmacokinetics studies might help to further evaluate the potential relevance of RAME and other spice-derived polyphenolics for vasoprotection.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: 32 plants, from which 30 are used in local traditional medicine - identified by interviews with the resident population - in the province of Uíge in northern Angola for the treatment of inflammation related disorders, were screened on different anti-inflammatory parameters. Three extracts were selected for a detailed ethnobotanical, pharmacological and phytochemical investigation based on their in vitro activity. AIM OF THE STUDY: We aimed to assess the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of these plants and highlight the active principles of the three most promising candidates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Plant material was collected in northern Angola during eight field trips from 2013 to 2015 based on data documented in 61 interviews with 142 local informants. 36 methanol (MeOH) extracts were prepared and tested at different concentrations (100, 50, 10µg/mL) to evaluate their inhibition on cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression and on nitric oxide (NO) release in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated J774A.1 macrophages. Five selected extracts were additionally tested at the lower concentrations of 5, 2.5, and 1.25µg/mL and for their potential on inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) release. The major compounds of three of those five extracts were either identified by HPLC coupled with (tandem) mass spectrometry and comparison with data from literature or isolated from the respective extracts and confirmed by NMR experiments (one and two dimensional). RESULTS: 30 plant species with in total 161 citations were mentioned by the informants to have anti-inflammatory properties. The predominantly used plant part is the leaf (39%), followed by underground organs like roots and rhizomes (25%), bark (18%) as well as fruits and seeds with 15%. With 47%, decoction is the most frequent preparation form. A large number of the MeOH extracts showed promising activities in our preliminary screening for the inhibition of COX-2 expression and NO release. Five extracts with high activities in both assays showed also concentration dependent inhibition at lower concentrations and a decreased release of two additional pro-inflammatory mediators (IL-6 and TNF-α) vs. LPS. Three leaf extracts where chosen for a detailed investigation, which lead to the identification of several constituents: verbascoside and isoverbascoside (Acanthus montanus), geraniin, chebulagic acid and a large flavonoid fraction (Alchornea cordifolia) as well as the four flavonoids astilbin, isovitexin, isoorientin and swertisin (Chaetocarpus africanus). Their implication in the observed biological activity was proved by comparison with published data of these compounds in identical or similar pharmacological models. CONCLUSIONS: The indigenous use of these plants against inflammation related ailments could be - at least partly - verified by our in vitro models for many of the investigated extracts. Acanthus montanus and Alchornea cordifolia particularly stood out with their high activity in all four performed assays, which was in accordance with pharmacological studies of their major constituents in literature. In addition, this study was the first phytochemical investigation of Chaetocarpus africanus and first description of the occurrence of the ellagitannins geraniin and chebulagic acid in Alchornea cordifolia. These results support the traditional use and should encourage further investigations of medicinal plants of northern Angola.
