RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Thermal imaging may be effectively used in musculoskeletal system diagnostics and therapy evaluation; thus, it may be successfully applied in myofascial trigger points assessment. OBJECTIVE: Investigation of thermal pattern changes after myofascial trigger points progressive compression therapy in healthy males and females. METHODS: The study included 30 healthy people (15 females and 15 males) with age range 19-34 years (mean age: 23.1 ± 4.21). Thermograms of myofascial trigger points were taken pre- and posttherapy and consecutively in the 15th and 30th minutes. Pain reproducible by palpation intensity was assessed with numeric rating scale. RESULTS: Progressive compression therapy leads to myofascial trigger points temperature (p=0.02) and surface (p=0.02) and surface (p=0.02) and surface (p=0.02) and surface (. CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that myofascial trigger points reaction to applied therapy spreads in time and space and depends on participants' sex.

RESUMO

The palliative care patient is definitely a unique type of patient. Due to the complexity of the symptoms requires a holistic therapeutic approach. Modern methods of treatment in palliative and hospice care underline an important role of physio, kinesiotherapy and pharmacological treatment coexistence. The rehabilitation reduces clinical symptoms, accompanying the basic disease and increases the quality of life of palliative patients and their families. It becomes an inseparable element of treatment, both in outpatient care as well as in stationary care and home care. Due to the high dynamics onset of cancer in the group of geriatric patients there is a need for a broader analysis of the topic. The goal of palliative care is to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients and their families.

RESUMO

The most frequent causes of leg ulcers are chronic venous disease (CVD) related mainly to venous hypertension and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) related to disseminated atheromatous lesions in lower limb arteries. In 15%-21% of patients, ulcers of mixed venous-arterial etiology occur, which are usually more resistant for conservative therapy (compression therapy, pharmacotherapy, wearing elastic stockings, leg elevation and massage, change of lifestyle, and regular physical exercises). The contemporary model of complex therapy of leg ulcers in the course of chronic venous and arterial insufficiency more often also comprises numerous physical therapy procedures as associated therapy. This paper presents beneficial results of treatment applied to a 58-year-old patient with 1-month lasting painful chronic ulcers of both shins of mixed venous-arterial etiology, resistant to conservative therapy, which was performed by using the device Laserobaria-S for local combined physical therapy including simultaneous action of hyperbaric oxygen, extremely low-frequency (ELF) variable magnetic field, and low-energy light radiation. As a result of a 9-week therapeutic cycle consisting of 30 daily procedures, a complete healing of ulcers in both shins with accompanying subsidence of pain and substantial reduction in the intensity of local inflammation around the ulcer was obtained. The patient reported no side effects, and no complications were observed during the therapy.

RESUMO

For many years the increasing number of patients who indulge different accidents and injuries during executing buildings works was observed. The medical help offered to those patients - the most often surgical or orthopedic - in form of surgical debridement of wound should enable its complete healing. However in many cases the healing process of wounds does not run in correct way and chronic wounds come into being, which need complex treatment. Contemporary physical medicine systematically broadens the healing possibilities by introducing to clinical practice new procedures and the therapeutic devices which in many cases accelerate the healing processes of chronic wounds. It this paper the results of the treatment of 44-years old man who experienced the injury of right palm - the cut of two finger tips by the angle grinder, were presented. In the treatment two physical methods were applied: magnetostimulation and local hyperbaric oxygen therapy, with good results resulting in complete healing of wounds, enabling the independent patient's existence, return to professional activity and improvement of quality of his life (Quality of Life).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcer is one of the major complications of diabetes mellitus in adults. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to conduct a planimetry evaluation of the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in the treatment of patients with vascular disorders caused by diabetic foot. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 94 patients, 30 females (32%) and 64 males (68%), aged 33-76 years, with diabetes lasting 1.5-32 years, who underwent HBOT due to diabetic foot. All patients from that group underwent vascular procedures prior to HBOT. In qualifying patients for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, transcutaneous oximetry method was applied (30-60 exposures in hyperbaric oxygen at pressure of 2.5 ATA). Progress in wound healing was evaluated by computerized planimetry system IRIS 4. RESULTS: In 26 patients the wounds were completely closed and in 37 patients the topical state was significantly improved - the wound surface decreased by 34% in average. During the treatment, in 11 patients amputation of fingers and metatarsal necrotic bones was performed, while in 9 patients amputation was prevented. CONCLUSIONS: A planimetry evaluation showed that the application of HBOT in the treatment of diabetic foot enhances foot ulcer healing, reduces tissue damage, contributes to the reduction of complications related to soft tissue and bone infections.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used in many different oncologic fields. Also in gastroenterology, where have been a few attempts to treat both the premalignant lesion and advanced colorectal cancer (CRC). This review aims to give a general overview of preclinical photodynamic studies related to CRC cells and animal studies of photodynamic effects related to CRC treatment to emphasize their potential in study of PDT mechanism, safety and efficiency to translate these results into clinical benefit in CRC treatment. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Literature on in vitro preclinical photodynamic studies related to CRC cells and animal studies of photodynamic effects related to CRC treatment with the fallowing medical subject headings search terms: colorectal cancer, photodynamic therapy, photosensitizer(s), in vitro, cell culture(s), in vivo, animal experiment(s). The articles were selected by their relevance to the topic. RESULTS: The majority of preclinical studies concerning possibility of PDT application in colon and rectal cancer is focused on phototoxic action of photosensitizers toward cultured colorectal tumor cells in vitro. The purposes of animal experiments are usually elucidation of mechanisms of observed photodynamic effects in scale of organism, estimation of PDT safety and efficiency and translation of these results into clinical benefit. CONCLUDING REMARKS: In vitro photodynamic studies and animal experiments can be useful for studies of mechanisms and efficiency of photodynamic method as a start point on PDT clinical research. The primary disadvantage of in vitro experiments is a risk of over-interpretation of their results during extrapolation to the entire CRC.

RESUMO

The study was focused on the influence of electromagnetic field generated by mobile phone on the skeletal system of rats, assessed by measuring the macrometric parameters of bones, mechanical properties of long bones, calcium and phosphorus content in bones, and the concentration of osteogenesis (osteocalcin) and bone resorption (NTX, pyridinoline) markers in blood serum. The study was carried out on male rats divided into two groups: experimental group subjected to 28-day cycle of exposures in electromagnetic field of 900 MHz frequency generated by mobile phone and a control, sham-exposed one. The mobile phone-generated electromagnetic field did not influence the macrometric parameters of long bones and L4 vertebra, it altered mechanical properties of bones (stress and energy at maximum bending force, stress at fracture), it decreased the content of calcium in long bones and L4 vertebra, and it altered the concentration of osteogenesis and bone resorption markers in rats. On the basis of obtained results, it was concluded that electromagnetic field generated by 900 MHz mobile phone does not have a direct impact on macrometric parameters of bones; however, it alters the processes of bone mineralization and the intensity of bone turnover processes and thus influences the mechanical strength of bones.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The paper presents the evaluation of analgesic effect or magnetostimulation and magnetoledtherapy after implantation treatment. The study was conducted on 3 groups (Z applicator, IR applicator and conventional drug therapy) of 10 patients each of whom underwent a single implantation. Magnetostimulation was carried out using Viofor JPS Delux equipment. The patients were exposed to magnetic field for approx. 15 minutes before the treatment and during the visit after 6 hours after the implantation procedure. Pain perception of patients was recorded on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). RESULTS: the most intense pain was reported in the control group. The least intense pain appeared in the group with Z applicator. Patients using Z and IR applicators took analgesics less frequently and used much weaker analgesics than the control group. Pain perceived in the first group was between 0 and 2, while in the second group - between 2 and 3, and in the control group - between 3 and 5 in VAS scale. Magnetostimulation reduces patient's demand for analgesics after implantation procedures and yielded better effects in reduction of pain in comparison with magnetostimulation with LED therapy.

RESUMO

The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of the spatial variable magnetic field (induction: 150-300 µT, 80-150 µT, 20-80 µT; frequency 40 Hz) on neuropathic pain after tibial nerve transection. The experiments were carried out on 64 male Wistar C rats. The exposure of animals to magnetic field was performed 1 d/20 min., 5 d/week, for 28 d. Behavioural tests assessing the intensity of allodynia and sensitivity to mechanical and thermal stimuli were conducted 1 d prior to surgery and 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 d after the surgery. The extent of autotomy was examined. Histological and immunohistochemical analysis was performed. The use of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields of minimal induction values (20-80 µT/40 Hz) decreased pain in rats after nerve transection. The nociceptive sensitivity of healthy rats was not changed following the exposition to the spatial magnetic field of the low frequency. The results of histological and immunohistochemical investigations confirm those findings. Our results indicate that extremely low-frequency magnetic field may be useful in the neuropathic pain therapy.

RESUMO

Anal fissures occur most often as a result of mechanical damage or strenuous activity or cracks in structures lining the final stretch of the anal canal. They can also be the result of frequent constipation and anal intercourse. The consequence of these changes are creating cracks, sores and painful rectal spasms that cause very intense and uncomfortable pain. Initially conservative treatment is introduced. In the absence of satisfactory results, the only effective treatment is surgery. In this paper he results of treatment of a 63-year-old patient after surgery of anal fissures is introduced. The treatment included magnetledtherapy procedures. For several years, the patientfelt a persistent and very strong pain. Aftertreatment, there is significant pain relief occurring and significant improvement in quality oflife of the patient. The results of treatment show that in the complex process of treatment it is also essential to take into accountthe procedures of physical medicine.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of the antioxidant enzymes mitochondrial and cytosolic superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1), glutathione peroxidase (POX, EC 1.11.1.9) and glutathione S-transferase (EC 3.1.2.7), as well as the concentration of malone dialdehyde (MDA), as an indicator of lipid peroxidation rate in the liver tissue homogenates and blood serum of male rats exposed to extremely low-frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) in order to improve the healing process of an experimental cut wound on the back of each animal. The exposure to ELF-MF with frequency 40 Hz and magnetic flux density 10 mT induced an increase in POX serum activity and a decrease in MDA contents in the liver tissue, which suggests the inhibition of phospholipid peroxidation and subsequent stabilization of cellular membranes, as a result of ELF-MF action. Based on the results obtained, it seems that ELF-MF could be a useful supplement in the complex treatment of prolonged wound healing, due to the activation of endogenous enzymatic antioxidant system.

RESUMO

The infections in orthopedic surgery and traumatology represents important medical problem. The results of treatment of motor-organs infections in high degree were improved by the introduction of antisepsis and asepsis in XIX century and the antibiotics' discovery in the beginning of XX century. However, widespread usage of antibiotics leaded to the rise of refractory tribes of bacteria on their activity, which caused higher percentage of fails in the therapy. Also the rapid civilization development, which flown on arising of a new invasive methods of operative trauma protection and stabilizations of fractures in motor-organs area increased the number of infectious complications during treatment. These facts gave a reason to look for a more effective therapeutic methods. It seems that photodynamic therapy gives us the new possibilities of infectious treatment, which avails oneself activity of therapeutic light laser with proper wave length on the human tissue with photosensitizer included. Indeed there are known until now splendid results of PDT in neoplasma treatment, however it seems, based on experimental investigations and publications in medical literature, that this method can be a chance of effectual and non-invasive treatment of the soft tissues and bones inflammations.

RESUMO

AIM: Preliminary results of research on the therapeutical efficacy of weak variable magnetic fields with low value of induction used as magnetostimulation in patients with depression not reacting to two consecutive, correctly applied anti-depressant pharmacological treatment are presented in the paper. METHOD: The examined patients (24 persons aged 18-65 years) treated with anti-depressants accessible in Poland were randomly divided into 2 groups. In 1 group (11 persons--9 women and 2 men) magnetostimulation with the use of a weak variable magnetic field with a low value of induction of 15 microT generated by the VIOFOR JPS device (Poland) lasting 12 minutes daily for 15 days was added to pharmacological therapy. Patients from 2 groups (13 persons--11 women and 2 men) were exposed to exposure with the same device. The intensity of depression was estimated with Beck's, Montgomery-Asberg's and Hamilton's scales. RESULTS: As a result of a cycle of active magnetostimulation a distinct, statistically significant decrease of intensification of depression, both in the 7th and 15th day exposure was obtained, while in the sham-exposed group only slight, transient decrease of intensification of depression in the 7th day of sham-exposure was observed. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that adding magnetostimulation to pharmacological therapy results in a progressive, significant reduction of intensification of depression symptoms.
