Background: Garlic has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular improvement and other beneficial effects on human health. However, few studies have evaluated the association of garlic intake with the risk of depressive symptoms. The aim of this prospective cohort was to examine the association between the frequency of raw garlic consumption and depressive symptoms in the general adult population. Methods: A total of 7427 participants (mean ± standard deviation: 39.7 ± 10.5 years) without baseline depressive symptoms were included in the cohort study. Garlic consumption was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and depressive symptoms were assessed by a Chinese version of the Self-rating Depression Scale score (SDS score ≥ 45). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the association between garlic consumption and the risk of depressive symptoms. Results: This study identified 1070 cases of depressive symptoms during a median follow-up of 2.0 years, with a depression prevalence of 73.4 cases per 1000 person-years. After multivariate adjustment, the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for depressive symptoms in males were 1.00 (reference) for almost never, 1.05 (0.84, 1.32) for ≤1 time per week, 1.16 (0.90, 1.49) for 2-3 times per week, and 1.31 (0.97, 1.78) for ≥4 times per week, and in females, they were 1.00 (reference) for almost never, 0.85 (0.69, 1.06) for ≤1 time per week, 0.72 (0.54, 0.97) for 2-3 times per week, and 0.78 (0.53, 1.13) for ≥4 times per week. Conclusion: In a large general population, we demonstrate for the first time that moderate raw garlic consumption is associated with a reduced risk of depressive symptoms in females, but not in males. Additional prospective studies with long-term follow-up and randomized controlled trials are necessary to confirm the preliminary results of the current study.

Background and aims: Tea polyphenols, such as green tea polyphenols, have been extensively studied as agents that ameliorate cardiovascular disease and blood pressure in vitro and in animal studies. However, epidemiological evidence for the association of green tea consumption with hypertension (HTN) is inconsistent. In addition, such an association has not been prospectively examined in the general adult population, particularly among young women. Therefore, we designed a cohort study to examine whether green tea consumption increases the risk of HTN in premenopausal women. Methods and results: This prospective cohort study investigated 6633 premenopausal female participants without hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer at the baseline. Green tea consumption was measured at the baseline using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Hypertension was confirmed with the SBP ≥140 mm Hg-1 or with the DBP ≥90 mm Hg-1. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to examine the association of green tea consumption with incident hypertension. A total of 488 first incident cases of hypertension occurred during 24 957 person-years of follow-up (median follow-up of 4.0 years). After adjustment for potential confounding variables, the multivariable hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for incident hypertension in premenopausal female participants with different green tea consumption frequencies were 1.00 (reference) for almost never, 0.84 (0.67, 1.07) for 1 cup per week, 1.02 (0.77, 1.35) for 2-6 cups per week, and 0.65 (0.44, 0.96) for ≥1 cup per day. Conclusions: The results from our prospective study indicate that the consumption of green tea is associated with a reduced risk of HTN in premenopausal women.

Background and aims: Onions have shown antidepressant effects but relevant evidence from people was limited. Thus, we aimed to explore the prospective association between onion consumption and risk of depressive symptoms in the general population. Methods: We used data from 2 cohorts: the Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health (TCLSIH) cohort included 7739 participants (males, 57.6%) with a mean age of 39.5 years, and the UK Biobank included 169 806 individuals (males, 45.2%) with a mean age of 55.7 years. In the TCLSIH cohort, onion consumption was assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire from May 2013; depressive symptoms were evaluated by the Chinese version of the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS scores ≥ 45) and were assessed up to 2018. In the UK Biobank, onion consumption was measured by 1-5 times validated 24-hour dietary recalls in 2006-2010; depressive symptoms were determined through the linked hospital records and death registries and were assessed up to 2018. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were employed to determine the association between onion consumption and risk of depressive symptoms. Results: A total of 1098 and 1924 cases of depressive symptoms were identified during 15 004 person-years and 1 243 832 person-years of follow-up in the TCLSIH cohort and the UK Biobank, respectively. After adjusting for many confounding factors, the fully adjusted HRs (95% CI) of depressive symptoms comparing the higher levels to the lowest level of onion consumption were 0.78 (0.65, 0.94), 0.73 (0.61, 0.87), and 0.77 (0.64, 0.92) in the TCLSIH cohort (p for trend = 0.01); and were 0.79 (0.68, 0.93), 0.81 (0.69, 0.94), and 0.97 (0.85, 1.12) in the UK Biobank (p for trend = 0.07). Similar associations were observed in the sensitivity analyses. Conclusion: Our results indicated that habitual onion consumption was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms in two cohorts. However, this association was not statistically significant in the highest level of onion consumption in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: The prospective studies on the effect of particular type of tea consumption, especially green tea, on depressive symptoms are limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the prospective association between green tea consumption and depressive symptoms in a large general adult population. METHODS: This prospective cohort study investigated 7524 participants aged 25 to 90 years from May 2013 to December 2018 and they were free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and depressive symptoms at baseline. Green tea consumption was obtained through a validated food frequency questionnaire. Depressive symptoms were assessed by using the Self-Rating Depressive Scale (SDS). The association between green tea consumption and depressive symptoms was analyzed by Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS: A total of 1064 first incident cases of depressive symptoms (SDS ≥45) occurred during 14,661 person-years of follow-up (median follow-up of 2.0 years). In the crude model, the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.00 (reference), 0.95 (0.81, 1.12), 0.97 (0.83, 1.14) and 0.95 (0.79, 1.14), respectively. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and dietary intake, the multivariable adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.00 (reference), 0.88 (0.74, 1.05), 0.84 (0.69, 1.02) and 0.78 (0.63, 0.97), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The prospective study suggests that frequent green tea consumption is associated with a decreased risk of depressive symptoms in the general Chinese population.

PURPOSE: The protective effect of onion against thyroid hypofunction has been reported in animal studies. However, in humans, the association between onion consumption and subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) are unclear. The study sought to explore the association between habitual onion intake and SCH among adult population from an iodine-replete area. METHODS: A cross-sectional study (6515 men and 5290 women) was performed in Tianjin, China. Frequency of onion consumption was assessed using a valid self-administered food frequency questionnaire. Serum free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were determined by chemiluminescence immunoassay. SCH was diagnosed with TSH > 4.78 mIU/L. Multiple logistic regression was used to evaluate the association of onion intake with SCH. RESULTS: The prevalence of SCH was 2.56% in men and 7.18% in women, respectively. In women, the fully adjusted odds ratios [95% confidence interval (CI)] of having SCH across increasing frequency of onion intake were 1.00 (reference) for <1 time/week, 0.99 (0.73, 1.34) for 1-3 times/week, 0.74 (0.53, 1.03) for 4-6 times/week, and 0.67 (0.47, 0.97) for ≥7 times/week (P for trend <0.01). However, we observed no significant association between onion intake and SCH in men. Stratified analyses suggested a potential effect modification by age: the odds ratios (95% CI) across extreme quartiles was 0.37 (0.17, 0.80) in <40 women and 1.11 (0.51, 2.47) in >60 women. CONCLUSIONS: Frequent consumption of onion is inversely associated with SCH in adult women from an iodine-replete area. Further studies are needed to explore the casual relationship. Fish contain many important nutrients and are primarily known for high n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) content. Studies have shown that supplementation of fish oil-derived n-3 PUFA improves muscle mass and strength. Here, we hypothesized that fish consumption might improve muscle strength. To test this hypothesis, we performed this cross-sectional study (n = 29,084) in Tianjin, China. The frequency of fish consumption was assessed using a valid self-administered food frequency questionnaire. Handgrip strength (HGS) was used as the indicator of muscle strength, and was measured using a handheld digital dynamometer. Analysis of covariance was used to examine the relationship between fish consumption and HGS. In men, after adjusted potential confounding factors, the least square means (95% confidence intervals) of HGS across saltwater fish consumption categories were 41.5 (41.1, 43.7) kg for <1 time/week, 44.6 (43.2, 45.8) kg for 1 time/week, and 44.7 (43.3, 46.1) kg for ≥2 to 3 times/week (P for trend <0.001). In men, the least square means (95% confidence intervals) of HGS across the ascending quartiles of dietary n-3 PUFA intake were 43.6 (43.2, 44.4) kg, 43.7 (43.2, 44.6) kg, 44.4 (43.0, 45.8) kg, and 44.6 (43.1, 46.0) kg (P for trend <0.01). The results showed that saltwater fish consumption was positively related to HGS in men, but not in women, suggesting that saltwater fish contain nutrients that may be used to improve HGS.

Previous studies have shown that allicin can lower blood pressure (BP) by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. However, the association between habitual raw garlic intake (as allicin source) and prehypertension are unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate how raw garlic consumption is associated with prehypertension in an adult population. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 22,812 adults (mean [standard deviation] age: 39.4 [10.7] years; males, 47.7%) in Tianjin, China. Raw garlic consumption was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. BP was measured at least twice by trained nurses using an automatic device. Prehypertension was defined as systolic BP of 120-139 mmHg and/or diastolic BP of 80-89 mmHg without taking antihypertensive medication. Multiple logistic regression models were used to assess the association between raw garlic consumption and prehypertension. The prevalence of prehypertension was 49.9%. After fully adjusting for potential confounders, the ORs (95% confidence intervals) of having prehypertension by increasing frequency of raw garlic consumption were 1.00 (reference) for ≤3 times/week, 0.96 (0.87, 1.06) for 4 times/week to 1 time/day, and 0.69 (0.52, 0.90) for ≥2 times/day (p for trend = 0.06). In contrast, no associations were observed between other kinds of allium vegetables consumption and prehypertension. In conclusion, our results suggested that a more frequent consumption of raw garlic was inversely associated with prehypertension. This is the first large-scale study on the association between raw garlic consumption and prehypertension in the general population.

BACKGROUND: Garlic-derived organosulfur compounds have numerous potential benefits (e.g. antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects) on human health. Although these functions might be related to the onset and progression of muscle strength decline, no studies have explored the relationship between garlic consumption and muscle strength in the general population. The aim of this study was to investigate whether raw garlic consumption is related to handgrip strength in a large-scale adult population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study (n = 28,958) was performed in Tianjin, China. Frequency of raw garlic consumption was assessed using a valid self-administered food frequency questionnaire. Handgrip strength was measured using a handheld digital dynamometer. Analysis of covariance and multiple logistic regression were used to evaluate the relationship between raw garlic consumption and handgrip strength. RESULTS: In males, after adjusted potential confounding factors, the least square means (95% confidence intervals) of handgrip strength across raw garlic consumption categories were 42.5 (40.2-44.9) for almost never; 43.0 (40.7-45.5) for <1 time/week; 43.4 (41.0-45.8) for 1 time/week; and 43.8 (41.5-46.3) for ≥2-3 times/week (P for trend <0.0001). The adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of low handgrip strength (<20th percentile of handgrip strength) across the categories of raw garlic consumption in males were 1.00, 0.86 (0.76, 0.98), 0.76 (0.67, 0.87), and 0.66 (0.58, 0.74) (P for trend <0.0001). Similar results were also observed in females. CONCLUSIONS: The study firstly revealed a positive correlation between raw garlic consumption and handgrip strength in both males and females. Further studies are needed to explore the casual relationship.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that tea extract supplementation has potential benefits on the risk factors of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, no study has investigated the direct effect of daily tea consumption on the prevalence of NAFLD in the general population. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the associations between tea consumption and the prevalence of newly diagnosed NAFLD among Chinese adults. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study was based on the Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study. In total, 19,350 participants were enrolled in the analyses. Tea consumption was assessed via a self-administered food frequency questionnaire. NAFLD was diagnosed via liver ultrasonography and no history of heavy alcohol intake. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associations between tea consumption and the prevalence of NAFLD. RESULTS: Consumption of green tea, oolong tea, and black tea were positively associated with the prevalence of newly diagnosed NAFLD before adjustments. Compared with the participants who never drink tea, the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of newly diagnosed NAFLD in the highest categories (≥ 1 cup/day) of green tea, oolong tea, black tea, and jasmine tea were 1.48 (1.33, 1.65), 1.50 (1.33, 1.68), and 1.28 (1.13, 1.46), and 1.36 (1.20, 1.54) before adjustments, respectively. However, no significant association was found between tea consumption and the prevalence of NAFLD after adjusting for socio-demographic, behavioural, anthropometric, dietary, and clinical confounding factors. CONCLUSION: There is no significant association between daily tea drinking and newly-diagnosed NAFLD in general Chinese adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The protective effect of garlic against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been reported in animal studies. However, in humans, the association between garlic consumption and NAFLD is unclear. The study sought to explore the association between habitual raw garlic intake and newly diagnosed NAFLD among Chinese adults. METHODS: We performed a study of 11,326 men and 12,780 women aged 20-90 years. Habitual food intake was assessed using a validated and standardized 100-item food frequency questionnaire. Diagnosis of NAFLD was based on the liver ultrasonography and self-reported alcohol intake. Multiple logistic regression was used to evaluate the association of raw garlic intake with newly diagnosed NAFLD. RESULTS: The prevalence of newly diagnosed NAFLD was 28.9% in men and 10.1% in women, respectively. In men, the fully adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of having NAFLD across increasing frequency of raw garlic intake were 1.00 (reference) for <1 time/week, 0.81 (0.73, 0.90) for 1-3 times/week, 0.66 (0.54, 0.80) for 4-6 times/week, and 0.71 (0.55, 0.90) for ≥7 times/week (P for trend <0.0001). The odds ratio for NAFLD associated with each 1 g of raw garlic/1000 kcal was 0.93 (0.90, 0.97) in men. In women, no significant association between raw garlic intake and NAFLD was identified. These associations between raw garlic intake and NAFLD were consistent in several sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Frequent consumption of raw garlic is inversely associated with NAFLD in Chinese men. Further investigations are needed to confirm this finding.

Myricetin is a natural plant-derived inhibitor for α-glucosidase and α-amylase and possesses strong antioxidant activity. Myricetin is reported to be effective in treating many symptoms that are associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), therefore, we hypothesized that myricetin plays a preventive role in the development of T2DM. To test this hypothesis, we designed a cross-sectional population study, which included 24 138 subjects, with 1357 of them diagnosed with T2DM. A validated 100-item food frequency questionnaire was used to collect dietary information. Daily intakes of myricetin and nutrients were calculated, based on the Chinese food composition tables. Multiple logistic regression analysis models were used to analyze the relationship between the quartiles of myricetin intake and the prevalence of T2DM. We found that, in this Chinese population, the daily intake of myricetin was 120.5 ±â€¯95.7 mg, with apple, peach, orange, pineapple, and sweet potato being the main food sources. Significant inverse trends were observed between intakes of myricetin and prevalence of T2DM in multivariable models (all p-trend <0.0001). The odds ratios (95% CI) for T2DM across the ascending quartiles of myricetin intake were: 1.00 (reference), 0.73 (0.61, 0.87), 0.61 (0.50, 0.75), and 0.51 (0.40, 0.64). This study showed that myricetin intake was inversely related to the prevalence of T2DM in this Chinese population, suggesting a protective effect of myricetin in the development of T2DM.
