In this study, the effects of citric acid-autoclaving (CA-A) treatment on physicochemical and digestive properties of the native ginseng starches were investigated. The results showed that ginseng starch exhibited a B-type crystal structure with a low onset pasting temperature of 44.23 ± 0.80 °C, but high peak viscosity and setback viscosity of 5897.34 ± 53.72 cP and 692.00 ± 32.36 cP, respectively. The granular morphology, crystal and short-range ordered structure of ginseng starches were destroyed after CA-A treatment. The more short-chain starches were produced, resulting in the ginseng starches solubility increased. In addition, autoclaving, citric acid (CA) and CA-A treatment promoted polymerization and recrystallization of starch molecules, increased the proportion of amylopectin B1, and B3 chains, and improved molecular weight and resistant starch (RS) content of ginseng starches. The most significant multi-scale structural change was induced by CA-A treatment, which reduced the relative crystallinity of ginseng starch from 28.26 ± 0.24 % to 2.75 ± 0.08 %, and increased the content of RS to 54.30 ± 0.14 %. These findings provided a better understanding of the structure and properties of Chinese ginseng starches and offered new ideas for the deep processing of ginseng foods.

Ginseng is widely recognized for its diverse health benefits and serves as a functional food ingredient with global popularity. Ginsenosides with a broad range of pharmacological effects are the most crucial active ingredients in ginseng. This study aimed to derive ginseng glucosyl oleanolate (GGO) from ginsenoside Ro through enzymatic conversion and evaluate its impact on liver cancer in vitro and in vivo. GGO exhibited concentration-dependent HepG2 cell death and markedly inhibited cell proliferation via the MAPK signaling pathway. It also attenuated tumor growth in immunocompromised mice undergoing heterograft transplantation. Furthermore, GGO intervention caused a modulation of gut microbiota composition by specific bacterial populations, including Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, Clostridium, Enterococcus, etc., and ameliorated SCFA metabolism and colonic inflammation. These findings offer promising evidence for the potential use of GGO as a natural functional food ingredient in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) has become a global epidemic, and the lack of an effective cure highlights the necessity and urgency to explore novel therapies. Sijunzi Decoction (SJZD), a classical Chinese herbal formula, has been comprehensively applied and clinically proven effective in treating UC; however, the pharmacological mechanism behind its therapeutic benefits is largely obscure. Here, we find that SJZD can restore microbiota homeostasis and intestinal barrier integrity in DSS-induced colitis. SJZD significantly alleviated the colonic tissue damage and improved the goblet cell count, MUC2 secretion, and tight junction protein expressions, which indicated enhanced intestinal barrier integrity. SJZD remarkedly suppressed the abundance of phylum Proteobacteria and genus Escherichia-Shigella, which are typical features of microbial dysbiosis. Escherichia-Shigella was negatively correlated with body weight and colon length, and positively correlated with disease activity index and IL-1[Formula: see text]. Furthermore, through gut microbiota depletion, we confirmed that SJZD exerted anti-inflammatory activities in a gut microbiota-dependent manner, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) validated the mediating role of gut microbiota in the SJZD treatment of UC. Through gut microbiota, SJZD modulates the biosynthesis of bile acids (BAs), especially tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), which has been identified as the signature BA during SJZD treatment. Cumulatively, our findings disclose that SJZD attenuates UC via orchestrating gut homeostasis in microbial modulation and intestinal barrier integrity, thus offering a promising alternative approach to the clinical management of UC.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The Luobufukebiri pill is one of the characteristic medicines of Uygur nationality in Xinjiang. It has the effect of warming and tonifying the brain and kidney, benefiting the heart and filling the essential functions, mainly used to treat impotence, depression, spermatorrhea, premature ejaculation, bodily weakness, emaciation, and neurasthenia. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study evaluated the toxicology and developed a quality control protocol of Luobufukebiri pill to ensure its safety and effectiveness in clinical applications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acute toxicity in mice was studied by the maximum-dose method, and the toxic reactions in mice were observed within two weeks. In the study of Sub-chronic toxicity, SD rats were randomized into four groups: three drug groups which were treated with 8.00, 2.67, and 0.80 g/kg of Luobufukebiri pill, respectively, and one control group which was treated with the same volume of distilled water. Subsequently, at 30 days of medication and 30 days of drug withdrawal, the hematologic indexes, biochemical indexes, organ coefficient, and pathological sections of main organs were detected, respectively. According to the prescription, the contents of 8 active components in the pill were quantified simultaneously. The chromatographic conditions were as follows: Stepwise gradient elution was carried out using 0.1% formic acid (solvent A) and acetonitrile (solvent B), 0-8 min, 80% → 60% B; 8-25 min, 60% → 25%B. The flow rate was 1.0 mL/min, the column was maintained at 25 °C, and the injected sample volume was 10 µL. RESULTS: The acute toxicity experiment documented a large dose of Luobufukebiri pill had no significant effect on organ and body weight and did not cause apparent damage to parenchymal organs. At Sub-chronic toxicity, the behavior of rats was as normal as the control group. There were some differences in hematologic indexes, serum biochemical indexes, and organ coefficient tests between the drug and control groups, but they had no toxic significance. No obvious pathological changes were observed in the pathological sections of major organs. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the clinical dose of Luobufukebiri pill was far less than its toxic dose, and it had reliable safety. The contents of eight index components of Luobufukebiri pill were measured. All calibration curves exhibited good linearity with correlation coefficients better than 0.9997. The relative standard deviations of precision, reproducibility, stability, and recovery were less than 2.0%, demonstrating the stability and reliability of the method. CONCLUSIONS: This study further confirmed the safety of Luobufukebiri pill in clinical practice. A rapid, accurate, and convenient RP-HPLC-PDA detection method has been developed for the simultaneous detection of eight active compounds in the pharmaceutical samples of Luobufukebiri pill. This study provided a reference for the safety and enhancement of the quality standards of Luobufukebiri pill.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a previously uncharacterized function of Sijunzi Decoction (SJZD) in inhibition of gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs). METHODS: MKN74 and MKN45, two CD44 positive gastric cancer cell lines with stem cell properties were used. The cells were divided into 2 groups. Treatment group was treated with SJZD (1-5 mg/mL) for indicated time (48 h-14 days). The control group was treated with equal volume of phosphate buffered saline. Cell Counting Assay Kit-8 were used to measure cell viability. Spheroid colony formation and GCSCs marker expression were performed to determine GCSCs stemness. Cell fractionation and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays were used to assess the distribution and DNA-binding activity of ß-catenin after SJZD treatment, respectively. RESULTS: SJZD treatment repressed cell growth and induced apoptosis in MKN74 and MKN45 cell lines (P<0.05). Moreover, SJZD dramatically inhibited formation of spheroid colony and expression of GCSC markers in GC cells (P<0.05). Mechanistically, SJZD reduced nuclear accumulation and DNA binding activity of ß-catenin (P<0.05), the key regulator for maintaining CSC stemness. CONCLUSION: SJZD inhibits GCSCs by attenuating the transcriptional activity of ß-catenin.

Based on HUA Tuo's personal experience, teaching experience, works as well as ancient books of similar times, this paper discusses the origin and development of HUA Tuo's acupuncturing sensation technique, and analyzes the reasons why this technology has been lost. The formation of this technique is influenced by the descriptions of "regulating qi " "arrival of qi " and "reaching qi" in Neijing (Internal Canon of Medicine) and Nanjing, and combines with the clinical summary of conduction direction and specific position of acupuncturing sensation. Due to HUA Tuo's personal experience, the inheritance characteristics of acupuncture technology and the background of his times, this technology may have been lost, but it still affects the acupuncture concept and practice of "qi reaching affected area" in later generations.

Phototherapy, especially the photothermal therapy (PTT) and the photodynamic therapy (PDT), have become very promising in cancer treatment due to its low invasiveness and high efficacy. Both PTT and PDT involve the utilization of light energy, and their synergistic treatment should be a good solution for cancer treatment by ingenious design. The therapeutic effect of phototherapy is closely associated with the amount and location of anticancer-nanodrugs accumulated in tumor cells, and the receptor-mediated endocytosis should be an excellent candidate for enhancing anticancer-nanodrugs internalization. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) imaging is suitable for tracing nanodrugs due to its high selectivity, sensitivity and reliability. In this paper, we hope to construct a receptor-mediated PTT/PDT synergistic anticancer nanodrugs and evaluate the corresponding efficacy through SERS tracing function. Here, the receptor-mediated PTT/PDT synergistic anticancer nanodrugs are prepared by the chemical modification of gold nanorods (GNRs), involving protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), 4-mecaptobenzoic acid (MBA), and folic acid (FA). The achieved results show that the receptor-mediated endocytosis can greatly facilitate the internalized amount and intracellular distribution of the nanodrugs, thus lead to the anti-cancer efficacy improvement. Importantly, this receptor-mediated PTT/PDT synergistic treatment with SERS tracing function will provide a simple and effective strategy for the design and application of anticancer phototherapy nanodrugs.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability of childhood. Spastic cerebral palsy accounts for 60% to 70% of cases. Research has shown that acupuncture can improve the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy, but the mechanism of action remains unclear. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture for treatment of children with spastic cerebral palsy and to assess the value of multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ambulatory electroencephalogram (EEG) for evaluation of treatment effect. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This randomized controlled trial will enroll a total of 72 children with CP from 2 hospitals-Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine and Nanjing State Hospital of Pediatric-with 36 participants from each hospital. Patients will be randomly assigned (1:1 ratio) to receive "Tonifying Kidney and Invigorating Brain" acupuncture treatment plus standardized physical rehabilitation treatment (treatment group) or only standardized physical rehabilitation (control group). All participants will receive 3 treatment sessions per week for 3 consecutive months; they will then be followed up for another 3 months. The primary outcome measures will include multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ambulatory electroencephalogram (EEG), and Gesell Developmental Diagnostic Schedules. The secondary outcome measures will include Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), Functional Independence Measure (WeeFIM), and Modified Ashworth Scale score. Outcome measures (including primary and secondary outcome measures) were collected at the baseline, 3 months and 6 months prior to the intervention.Ethics and dissemination PATIENTS CONSENT:: Obtained. ETHICS APPROVAL: The central independent ethics committee of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine approved the protocol (2017NL-115-02). SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: Routine blood tests and liver and kidney function tests will be conducted to exclude patients with severe heart, liver, or kidney diseases. The same examinations will be performed again at the end of the study to detect any possible side effects. Possible acupuncture-related adverse events (e.g., fainting, needle stick injury, local infection, subcutaneous hematoma, and low-grade fever) will be documented. Serious adverse events will be reported to the principal investigator immediately. All unexpected and unintended responses, even those not necessarily related to the acupuncture intervention, will be documented as adverse events. CASE DROPOUT MANAGEMENT: Participants have a right to withdraw from the study at any time if they feel uncomfortable upon receiving the treatments or being diagnosed with serious complications or diseases. They will then be referred to the preferred department for further treatment and management. If cases of dropout, the researcher need to contact the participant to reason the problem out, collect and record all the necessary assessments on the last visit as well as the date of last visit. All data available until the date of withdrawal will be stored for further statistical analysis. DISCUSSION: This research is being conducted to assess the value of acupuncture as an intervention for rehabilitation of children with spastic cerebral palsy and also to evaluate the usefulness of multimodal MRI and ambulatory EEG for identifying changes in brain function. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial is registered with Chinese Clinical Trials Register, ChiCTR 1900024546 (registered 15 July 2019; retrospective registration, http://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=35763).

A literature review was performed to investigate the possible mechanism of scalp acupuncture in stimulating the skin, fascia, muscle, and periosteum and thus affecting cerebral cortex function. The results of literature research show that the effect of scalp acupuncture on cerebral cortex function may be achieved by the stimulation of specific anatomical structures. Stimulation of the skin, fascia, muscle and periosteum can activate the functional areas of the cerebral cortex through the midbrain, thalamus, and brainstem. In addition, different depths of stimulation may affect the deep and shallow sensation of the brain, self-monitoring of the fascia, subcortical central compensation, and cortical discharge. Therefore, exploration of the specific rules and differences in the effect of stimulating different anatomical structures on brain function is the future focus of the clinical and basic research on scalp acupuncture.

BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a kind of blood stasis syndrome. Spatholobi Caulis (SC) has been widely used for the treatment of blood stasis syndrome in China, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. PURPOSE: The aim of present study was to investigate the anti-DVT mechanism of Spatholobi Caulis dispensing granule (SCDG). STUDY DESIGN/METHODS: A rat model of inferior vena cava (IVC) stenosis-induced DVT and a cell model of oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) were performed. Rats were orally administered with SCDG solution once daily for seven consecutive days. IVC stenosis-induced DVT was operated on the sixth day. Thrombi were harvested and weighed on the seventh day. Pathological changes were observed by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1ß of serum were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured with turbidimetric immunoassay. Protein expressions in thrombosed IVCs and/or OGD-stimulated EA. hy926 cells were evaluated by western blot and/or immunofluorescence analyses. RESULTS: SCDG dramatically decreased thrombus weight. SCDG decreased tissue factor (TF) protein expression, inflammatory cells influxes in thrombosed vein wall and serum levels of inflammatory cytokines and CRP. Further, SCDG up-regulated Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) protein expression and down-regulated acetylated-NF-κB p65 (Ace-p65) protein expression. Moreover, SCDG up-regulated nuclear factor-erythroid 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein expressions, and down-regulated phosphorylated-NF-κB p65 (p-p65) protein expression. In the OGD cell model, SCDG medicated serum decreased the protein expression of TF. SCDG medicated serum enhanced SIRT1 protein expression and reduced Ace-p65 nuclear protein expression. SCDG medicated serum promoted protein expressions of nuclear Nrf2 and total HO-1, and inhibited translocation of p65. Furthermore, inhibiting SIRT1 and Nrf2 reversed the protective effect of SCDG medicated serum on OGD-induced EA. hy926 cells. CONCLUSION: SCDG may prevent DVT through antiinflammation via SIRT1 and Nrf2.

OBJECTIVE: By defining the inclusion criteria of the lost acupuncture technique and sorting out the content of lost acupuncture technique (possibly lost acupuncture technique), this article aimed to provide ideas and methods of the inheritance of acupuncture technique. METHODS: The whole entries of Dictionary of Chinese Acupuncture-Moxibustion were searched. The items of acupuncture technique were screened and used as the key terms to retrieve the literature from the database of CNKI, Wanfang, VIP and SinoMed. After that, the lost acupuncture technique and the possibly lost technique were selected from included items, and the terminologies of acupuncture technique were standardized. RESULTS: A total of 364 items of acupuncture technique were retrieved, including 17 items of lost acupuncture technique and 12 items of possibly lost acupuncture technique. CONCLUSION: The lost acupuncture technique is defined as the acupuncture technique recorded in ancient classics but can not be retrieved in modern literature of clinical application or expert's experience. The change of government or alternation of dynasty, the evolution of acupuncture-moxibustion theories and education are the related causes of lost acupuncture technique.

Copper (Cu) has been used as a feed additive for many years. However, high Cu amounts can cause oxidative stress and adversely affect animal performance. Such negative effects may depend on the amounts and forms of Cu. In the present study, the effects of inorganic Cu (CuSO4) and organic Cu (chelate-Cu) present in mice feed on daily growth rate and Cu deposition in the liver, kidneys, spleen, brain, and serum were assessed in addition to the oxidative stress levels in the liver and brain. Organic Cu at a concentration of 15 mg/kg significantly enhanced daily growth rate in mice, whereas Cu deposition in the livers was significantly lower than that in the inorganic Cu group. Glutathione peroxidase activity in the liver of the mice fed with organic Cu significantly improved, whereas malondialdehyde levels in the brain and liver were significantly lower than that in the inorganic Cu group. The different effects of organic Cu and inorganic Cu provide key evidence supporting the use of organic Cu in animal feeds.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The Yimusake tablet (YMSK-T) is a type of Xinjiang Uygur Medicine, which affects curing diseases of impotence and premature ejaculation. It has remarkable pharmacological effects that mainly involve improving the number and shape of smooth muscle cells in the corpus cavernosum and enhancing the relaxation and contraction function of corpus cavernosum smooth muscle. AIM OF THE STUDY: The YMSK-T prescription, which consists of 11 traditional herbs, has significant pharmacological effects, however the evaluation of toxicology and quality control of the preparation has not yet been reported. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the toxicology and quality control of YMSK-T to ensure its safety and effectiveness in clinical applications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male rats were divided into three groups and were given continuous gavage administration of high, medium and low concentrations of YMSK-T. To determine hematopoietic parameters, orbital blood was collected at regular intervals. At termination of the experiment, rats were dissected for histopathological examination. According to the function of the prescription medicinal materials, seven active components were selected for content determination under the same chromatographic condition of using 0.2% aqueous phosphoric acid (solvent A) and acetonitrile (solvent B) with a 40 min post time: 0-13 min, 20% →30% B; 13-26 min, 30% →72% B; 26-38 min, 72% →92% B; 38-40 min, 92% →96% B. The column was maintained at 25 °C and the total sample injection was 10 µL. RESULTS: Our data showed that using a large dose (400X the dosage used in humans) of YMSK-T resulted in myocardium and liver damage, and eventually death of the rats. At sub-chronic toxicity, no significant differences were observed among indexes about relative organ weight, hematology, serum biochemistry and histopathological examination, and rats behaved normally. Our results also demonstrated that the YMSK-T dosage used was not toxic in the normal range. The linearity of each component was sufficient (correlation coefficients>0.9997). Moreover, the relative standard deviations of precision, repeatability, stability, and recovery were less than 2.0%, which showed that the method for determination of content was stable and reliable. CONCLUSIONS: YMSK-T has been found to be relatively safe in a rat model, and the method of content determination can be used for quality control of YMSK-T. Toxicology and quality control studies indicated that, the drug is safe and effective for clinical application.

According to indications of Sanguan (cun, guan and chi, three places at the wrist where the pulse is usually taken) described in book Mai Jing (Pulse Classic), the selection of acupoints is based on the location of problems and pulse conditions. WANG Shu-he (201-280, a well-known physician of the Wei and Jin dynasties) chose the operation method and stimulating intensity according to the nature of clinical disorders, that is, performing acupuncture or moxibusion in accordance with pulse conditions, or performing reinforcing or reducing needling manipulations based on pulse conditions. Clinical indications of Sanguan described in Mai Jing originate from Suwen: Sanbu Jiuhou Lun (Plain Questions: Discussion on Three Portions and Nine Pulse-takings) and are also influenced by Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases) and Jingui Yao Lue (Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber). It inherits ZHANG Zhong-jing's clinical thinking of "pulse-syndrome-treatment" and supplements the content of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, and also influenced the contents of indications of acupoints in book Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing (A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) and Qian Jin Yao Fang (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold). For this reason, it is necessary to unscramble the Mai Jing from clinical perspective of acupuncture and moxibustion, and to explore the thinking and practice mode of clinical diagnosis and treatment of clinical conditions by acupuncture and moxibustion.

As a traditional natural medicine for treating many kinds of diseases, Gnetum parvifolium showed apparent inhibition on xanthine oxidase (XO). In this study, ultrafiltration combined with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is used for the screening of XO inhibitors from Gnetum parvifolium. Their antioxidation, XO inhibition, and enzymic kinetic parameters are also determined. Finally, piceatannol (1), rhaponiticin (2), resveratrol (3), and isorhapontigenin (4) are screened out and identified as XO inhibitors from the extract of Gnetum parvifolium. Four inhibitors show better inhibition than allopurinol and good radical scavenging abilities. However, the antioxidant activities are weaker than ascorbic acid. The kinetic parameters illustrate the inhibition mode of XO by piceatannol is competitive type, while the inhibition modes for rhaponiticin, resveratrol and isorhapontigenin are uncompetitive types. In order to evaluate the difference among samples obtained in China, the amounts of four inhibitors and related activities in 20 samples are assessed and analyzed by partial least squares analysis. The results indicate piceatannol contribute the highest coefficients in three kinds of activities. Based on these findings, more comprehensive research on pharmaceutical and biochemical activities of these four XO inhibitors could be conducted in future.

OBJECTIVES: Geriatric depression is a major public health problem in China. The study compared the intervention and follow-up effects of aromatherapy massage and inhalation on symptoms of depression in community-dwelling older adults after an 8-week intervention. DESIGN: A prospective, randomized controlled trial was conducted on community-dwelling adults ≥60 years old, with symptoms of depression. Participants were randomly assigned, by Latin Square, to aromatherapy massage, inhalation, or control groups (each n = 20). INTERVENTIONS: The aromatherapy massage group received 30 min of aromatherapy massage with 5 mL oil, twice weekly for 8 weeks. The oil contained 50 µL (one drop) of compound essential oils (lavender [Lavandula angustifolia], sweet orange [Citrus sinensis], and bergamot (Citrus bergamia in a 2:1:1 ratio)], diluted in sweet almond oil to a concentration of 1%. The aromatherapy inhalation group received 30 min of nasal inhalation of 50 µL of the compound essential oils blended in 10 mL of purified water, twice weekly for 8 weeks. The control group received no intervention. OUTCOME MEASURES: The Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form (GDS-SF) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used for assessment at pretest, posttest, and 6- and 10-week follow-ups in all groups. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) concentration was assessed pretest and posttest. RESULTS: Postintervention, the aromatherapy massage and inhalation groups demonstrated significantly lower GDS-SF and PHQ-9 scores than control participants. Compared with the pretest, the GDS-SF and PHQ-9 scores for depressive symptoms in both experimental groups remained lower at posttest (8 weeks), 6-week (14 weeks), and 10-week (18 weeks) follow-ups. However, the GDS-SF and PHQ-9 scores did not differ among the four time points in the control group. The posttest 5-HT concentrations in the aromatherapy massage and inhalation groups were increased over pretest values. CONCLUSIONS: Both aromatherapy massage and aromatherapy inhalation may have important implications for intervening depression in older adults.

Electroacupuncture (EA) has been extensively used in clinical treatment of obesity. The effectiveness relies not only on the correct diagnosis and rational treatment, but also on the voluntary cooperation of patients, that is the satisfactory compliance. The patient compliance refers to his/her submissiveness and executive ability to medical advice, which is the indispensable factor for the clinical efficacy. The strength of it depends on the patient himself/herself, and moreover is improved through some therapeutic strategies. Based on the emphasis of individual treatment in the real world, the practical randomized controlled trial (RCT) study pays attention to patient's compliance at the beginning of trial design. In this paper, in terms of the influential factors and control strategies, the compliance of simple obesity patient in the practical RCT study was summarized systematically.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) are highly toxic to humans. The search for novel and effective methods and materials for detecting or removing these gas pollutants is becoming more important and urgent. With its high specific surface area, abundance, and variety of potential applications, phosphorene has attracted much research interest. In this study, density functional theory was used to study the interactions between a doped phosphorene sheet and a tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) molecule. The initial configurations of the TCDD and metallic (Ca or Ti) or nonmetallic (S and Se) dopants were investigated during the TCDD-phosphorene interaction study. Adsorption energy, isosurface of electron density difference, and density of states analysis were utilized to explore the interactions between TCDD and phosphorene. The results indicated that Ca dopant effectively improved the interaction between TCDD and phosphorene. Se dopant reduced the interaction between TCDD and phosphorene. Combining interactions between TCDD and the pristine, Ca-doped, and Se-doped phosphorenes, phosphorene could be a promising candidate for TCDD sensing and removal.

BACKGROUND: Kiwifruit is a perennial, deciduous and functionally dioecious plant. However, very little is known about the whole-genome molecular mechanisms contributing to distinct sexual phenotypes. To gain a global view of genes differentially expressed between male and female flowers, we analyzed genome-wide gene expression profiles in the flowers of male and female plants using high-throughput RNA sequencing. RESULTS: A total of 53.5 million reads were generated. Based on the alignments of unigenes to kiwifruit genome predicted genes, a total of 39,040 unique genes with a mean length of 970 bp were identified. There were 2,503 UniGenes differentially expressed between female and male flowers, with 1,793 up-regulated and 710 down-regulated in the female flowers. Moreover, the gene expression pattern of 17 out of 19 unigenes differentially expressed between male and female flowers revealed by RNA-Seq was confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR). CONCLUSIONS: Here, we obtained a large number of EST sequences from female and male flowers of kiwifruit. This comparative transcriptome analysis provides an invaluable resource for gene expression, genomics, and functional genomic studies in A. chinensis and its related species. This study also represents a first step toward the investigation of genes involved in kiwifruit sex determination.

The effects of Ca(2+), caffeine and polyphenols on the formation of reversible tea sediments (RTS) and irreversible tea sediments (IRS) in green tea infusion were studied. Adding Ca(2+) (2 mmol/l) was found to increase the formation of RTS by 8% and IRS by 92%, while adding chelating ions of Na2EDTA significantly decreased the amount of RTS by 14.6%, but not the amount of IRS. Under acid conditions, Ca(2+) combined with oxalic ions to form indissoluble oxalate that is the principal constituent of IRS, despite the existence of the chelating ions. Decaffeination largely inhibited the formation of RTS (73%) and IRS (60%), even in the presence of Ca(2+). The amount of sediment could be reduced by removing polyphenols using polyvinyl-polypyrrolidone. The results suggest that sediment formation in green tea infusions can be inhibited by lowering the concentration of Ca(2+), caffeine or polyphenols.
