RESUMO

Geometrical frustration and a high magnetic field are two key factors for realizing unconventional quantum states in magnetic materials. Specifically, conventional magnetic order can potentially be destroyed by competing interactions and may be replaced by an exotic state that is characterized in terms of quasiparticles called magnons, the density and chemical potential of which are controlled by the magnetic field. Here we show that a synthetic copper mineral, Cd-kapellasite, which comprises a kagomé lattice consisting of corner-sharing triangles of spin-1/2 Cu2+ ions, exhibits an unprecedented series of fractional magnetization plateaus in ultrahigh magnetic fields of up to 160 T. We propose that these quantum states can be interpreted as crystallizations of emergent magnons localized on the hexagon of the kagomé lattice.

RESUMO

The primary purpose of this study was to contrast the effects of two short-duration exercises on mood changes. A secondary goal was to examine the relationship between pre-exercise and post-exercise mood states. The subjects were 15 healthy male graduate students. They were involved in a within-subject design in which each individual completed two trials of running on a treadmill, one trial for 10 minutes and the other for 15 minutes. The Mood Checklist Short-form 1 (MCL-S1) used in the present study represents the participants' mood states before, during, and after exercise. This questionnaire has three sub-scales measuring (a) pleasantness, (b) relaxation, and (c) anxiety. Participants ran on a treadmill for the assigned time at a self-selected intensity after being told to run at a rate that felt good and was not painful. ANOVA results showed that both of the short bouts of exercise affected the subjects' mood, because the main effect of time spent exercising was observed in all sub-scales of the MCL-S1 and there were no significant differences in trial-by-time interaction. In addition to these results, there was a significant correlation between the two trial lengths in the amount of pleasantness and the amount of anxiety felt at post-exercise. There were moderate differences in the effect size (ES) for pre- and post-exercise pleasantness and anxiety levels. These results revealed similar patterns of change. It seems reasonable to conclude, based on this study, that exercise between 10 and 15 minutes results in similar psychological benefits for the person exercising.

RESUMO

Plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) is known to be elevated in patients with uncontrolled insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus who have plasma hyperosmolality with hyperglycaemia. Although osmotic stimuli cause an increase in nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity as well as synthesis of AVP and oxytocin in the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nuclei (SON), it is not known whether NOS activity in the hypothalamus changes in the diabetic patients who have plasma hyperosmolality with hyperglycaemia caused by insulin deficiency. Expression of the neuronal (n) NOS gene in the PVN and SON in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats was investigated by using in situ hybridization histochemistry and NADPH-diaphorase histochemical staining. Four weeks after intraperitoneal (i. p.) administration of STZ, male Wistar rats developed hyperglycaemia and plasma hyperosmolality. The expression of nNOS gene and NADPH-diaphorase staining in the PVN and SON remarkably increased in STZ-induced diabetic rats compared to control rats. Three weeks after administration of STZ, the diabetic rats were subcutaneously treated with insulin for 1 week, which resulted in significant suppression of the induction of nNOS, AVP and oxytocin gene expression in the PVN and SON. Furthermore, the induction of nNOS gene expression in the PVN and SON was suppressed in STZ-induced diabetic rats treated with phlorizin and diet to normalize hyperglycaemia without insulin treatment. These results suggest that upregulation of nNOS gene expression as well as AVP and oxytocin gene expression in the PVN and SON in STZ-induced diabetic rats may be associated with hyperglycaemia and plamsa hyperosmolality.

RESUMO

The patient was a 51-year-old female, underwent total gastrectomy for gastric cancer 6 years ago. She was admitted to a local hospital with the complaint of fever, the chest X-ray showed niveau in the left pleural cavity. Fecal material flowed out by drainage. Barium enema showed fistula of diaphragma from transverse colon. She was transferred to our hospital. Partial transverse colon resection and removal of the diaphragma fistula were performed. The colon tumor was histologically determined to be metastasis from gastric cancer with thoracic empyema.

RESUMO

A case of Borrmann type IV colorectal adenocarcinoma detected as a complication of long-standing ulcerative colitis is reported. Barium enema and colonoscopy disclosed a stenotic area associated with a tumoral mass and a flat elevated lesion in the rectosigmoid region and a submucosal tumor-like lesion in the rectum. Total colectomy was performed and histological studies demonstrated a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma accompanied by high- and low-grade dysplasia. DNA ploidy pattern analysis showed aneuploidy in the adenocarcinoma and high-grade dysplasia, but diploidy in the normal and atrophic mucosa and in low-grade dysplasia. DNA aneuploid content was associated with the presence of colorectal carcinoma complicating ulcerative colitis, indicating that DNA content studies should be included in screening programs to detect early colorectal carcinoma following this disease, as a complementary study to histological assessment.

RESUMO

A 69-year-old woman was diagnosed to have type 2 advanced esophageal carcinoma measuring Im 9 cm by X-ray and endoscopic examination. CT scan revealed much swelling of No. 106 and 9 lymph nodes. As the patient had dry cough and these lymph nodes, we tried neoadjuvant chemotherapy for reduction of metastatic lymph nodes. The regimen consisted of CDDP 80 mg/m2 (day 1), 5-FU 800 mg/m2 (day 1-4, continuous). After 2 courses, an operation was performed. Histopathological examination of the section of the primary tumor revealed that only a few cancer cells nests (sq. c.c., mod.) remained in the muscle layer. In 41 dissected lymph nodes, 12 lymph nodes had metastatic cancer cell nests before neoadjuvant chemotherapy and only 4 lymph nodes had a few remaining cancer cells nests. The effect of CDDP + 5-FU therapy is the same for primary tumor and lymph nodes.
