BACKGROUND: The network meta-analysis (NMA) investigated the efficacy of six food supplements, namely glutamine, arginine, lactoferrin, prebiotics, synbiotics, and probiotics, in preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in premature infants. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched. Randomized controlled trials comparing different food supplements for premature infants were included. RESULTS: Probiotics (OR, 0.47; 95% CrI, 0.33-0.63), arginine (OR, 0.38; 95% CrI, 0.14-0.98), glutamine (OR, 0.30; 95% CrI, 0.079-0.90), and synbiotics (OR, 0.13; 95% CrI, 0.037-0.37). were associated with a decreased incidence of NEC. Only probiotics (OR, 0.81; 95% CrI, 0.69-0.95) and lactoferrin (OR, 0.74; 95% CrI, 0.54-0.92) achieved lower risk of sepsis. Probiotics (OR, 0.58; 95% CrI, 0.40-0.79), prebiotics (OR, 0.23; 95% CrI, 0.043-0.86), and synbiotics (OR, 0.15; 95% CrI, 0.035-0.50) were associated with lower odds of mortality. Probiotics (MD, -2.3; 95% CrI: -3.7- -0.63) appeared to have earlier age of attainment of full feeding. CONCLUSIONS: Based on this NMA, probiotics and synbiotics had the potential to be the top two preferable food supplements.

Our recent study showed that glutamate can inhibit dopamine oxidation via chelating copper. l-Theanine is an amino acid analogue of glutamate, whereas tea (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is similar to dopamine in avidly undergoing oxidation. We thus hypothesized that l-theanine could also restrain EGCG oxidation via chelating copper. The current study scrutinized influences of l-theanine on EGCG oxidation in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro results showed that l-theanine and copper formed an l-theanine-copper complex with impaired redox activity of copper. Accordingly, l-theanine effectively suppressed copper-facilitated EGCG oxidation, hydroxyl radical production, and DNA damage; inhibited EGCG autoxidation which in essence involves catalysis of transition metals such as copper; and reduced EGCG oxidation-associated formation of a quinone adduct with proteins known as quinoproteins. Consistently, l-theanine significantly increased hepatic EGCG levels and reduced hepatic quinoprotein levels and liver injury in mice treated with EGCG. These lines of evidence together suggest that tea l-theanine can protect against tea catechin oxidation.

Spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are a promising material for sustainable preparation of biodiesel. This study proposed a new approach for biodiesel synthesis from wet SCGs using 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as both a green solvent and catalyst. The optimal reaction conditions were determined as a methanol amount of 6.25 mL/g of wet SCGs, DBU amount of 14.46 mL/g of wet SCGs, temperature of 60.2 °C, and reaction time of 28.65 min through response surface methodology. Under these conditions, the maximum biodiesel yield was 97.18%. Notably, DBU polarity could be regulated reversibly, facilitating its reusability and a simple process for product separation. Under optimal conditions, DBU could be potentially reused for at least 10 cycles to yield high amounts of biodiesel. This study suggests that the switchable solvent-assisted direct transesterification of wet SCGs is a potential, efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly approach for biodiesel synthesis.

RESUMO

This study developed a novel in situ transesterification process by combining the solvent and catalyst functions of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) for biodiesel synthesis from spent coffee grounds (SCG). The influence of reaction parameters on the reaction was investigated. The maximum biodiesel yield of 96.13% was observed at DBU-to-SCG and methanol-to-SCG ratios of 20 and 10 mL/g, respectively; a reaction temperature of 130 °C; and a reaction time of 60 min. Notably, the polarity of DBU could be reversibly regulated, thus facilitating excellent product separation. Moreover, DBU could be effectively reused for 10 cycles to yield high biodiesel conversion. DBU-catalyzed in situ transesterification of SCG is a promising, ecofriendly, and economically viable biodiesel production process.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of acupuncture at Baihui (GV 20) and Zusanli (ST 36) on the peripheral serum expression of microRNA 124 (miRNA 124), laminin and integrin ß1 in rats with cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury (CIRI). METHODS: Seventy-two healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into a model group, an acupuncture group, and a sham-operated group using a random digits table, with 24 rats per group. Each group was further randomly divided into 1-, 3-, 5-, and 7-day subgroups based on the reperfusion time according to a random digits table, with 6 rats in each subgroup. In the model and acupuncture groups, CIRI was induced using the thread occlusion method. Electroacupuncture stimulation was applied daily to GV 20 and left ST 36 for 20 min at the indicated time points after successful operations. Serum was sampled for detecting laminin and integrin ß1 protein via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and serum miRNA 124 was examined using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The serum level of miRNA 124 in the cerebral ischemia rats increased significantly, and the peak expression of miRNA 124 in both the model and acupuncture groups occurred at 3 days. The expression of miRNA 124 in the acupuncture group was higher than in the model group at the same time point (5.96±0.01 vs. 3.11±0.04, P <0.05). Laminin expression in serum from the cerebral ischemia group was higher than that in the sham-operated group. Compared with the model group, the level of laminin in the serum of the acupuncture group was significantly lower at each time point, especially at the 3-day, and 7-day time points (589.12±3.57 vs. 793.05±5.28, and 600.53±3.05 vs. 899.06±5.74, P <0.05). The level of integrin ß1 in the serum from the acupuncture group was lower than that in the model group particularly at the 3-day and 7-day time points (208.66±0.95 vs. 280.83±1.77, and 212.36±0.95 vs. 316.77±2.42, P <0.05). Additionally, the model group and the acupuncture group showed dual peaks of integrin ß1 and laminin expression at 3-day and 7-day. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture at GV 20 and ST 36 in rats alleviated CIRI and was associated with upregulated expression of miRNA 124 and with downregulated expression of integrin ß1 and laminin in peripheral serum. These changes may represent one of the mechanisms underlying acupuncture's attenuation of CIRI.

Strategies to develop effective neuroprotective therapy to reduce brain damage and related behavioral deficits in stroke patients are of great significance. Electroacupuncture (EA), which derives from traditional Chinese medicine, may be effective as a complementary and alternative method for promoting recovery of neurological function and quality of life. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: (1) sham, (2) middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model groups of 2 h MCAO followed by 1, 3, 5, or 7 d of reperfusion, and (3) EA groups of 2 h MCAO followed by 1, 3, 5, or 7 d of reperfusion. EA groups received EA therapy by needling at GV20 and left ST36. The results show that EA therapy improved the neurological function and reduced infarct volume, confirmed by modified neurological severity scores and TTC staining. Real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, and western blot assay verified that EA upregulated the expression of tight junction (TJ) claudin-5, occludin, and zonula occluding-1 from 1 to 7 d after reperfusion. Our findings suggest that EA reduces brain damage and related behavioral deficits via upregulation of the TJ proteins.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Ischemic stroke is characterized by high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), aquaporin (AQP) 4, and AQP9 are linked to permeabilization of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI). BBB disruption, tissue inflammation, and MMP/AQP upregulation jointly provoke brain edema/swelling after CIRI, while acupuncture and electroacupuncture can alleviate CIRI symptoms. This study evaluated the hypothesis that acupuncture and electroacupuncture can similarly exert neuroprotective actions in a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) by modulating MMP2/AQP4/APQ9 expression and inflammatory cell infiltration. METHODS: Eighty 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham group S, MCAO model group M, acupuncture group A, electroacupuncture group EA, and edaravone group ED. The MCAO model was established by placement of a suture to block the middle carotid artery, and reperfusion was triggered by suture removal in all groups except group S. Acupuncture and electroacupuncture were administered at acupoints GV20 (governing vessel-20) and ST36 (stomach-36). Rats in groups A, EA, and ED received acupuncture, electroacupuncture, or edaravone, respectively, immediately after MCAO. Neurological function (assessed using the Modified Neurological Severity Score), infarct volume, MMP2/AQP4/AQP9 mRNA and protein expression, and inflammatory cell infiltration were all evaluated at 24 h post-reperfusion. RESULTS: Acupuncture and electroacupuncture significantly decreased infarct size and improved neurological function. Furthermore, target mRNA and protein levels and inflammatory cell infiltration were significantly reduced in groups A, EA, and ED vs. group M. However, MMP2/AQP levels and inflammatory cell infiltration were generally higher in groups A and EA than in group ED except MMP2 mRNA levels. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture and electroacupuncture at GV20 and ST36 both exercised neuroprotective actions in a rat model of MCAO, with no clear differences between groups A and EA. Therefore, acupuncture and electroacupuncture might find utility as adjunctive and complementary treatments to supplement conventional therapy for ischemic stroke.
