RESUMO

Semi-arid rivers are particularly vulnerable and responsive to the impacts of industrial contamination. Prompt identification and projection of pollutant dynamics are crucial in the accidental pollution incidents, therefore required the timely informed and effective management strategies. In this study, we collected water quality monitoring data from a typical semi-arid river. By water quality inter-correlation mapping, we identified the regularity and abnormal fluctuations of pollutant discharges. Combining the association rule method (Apriori) and characterized pollutants of different industries, we tracked major industrial pollution sources in the Dahei River Basin. Meanwhile, we deployed the integrated multivariate long and short-term memory network (LSTM) to forecast principal contaminants. Our findings revealed that (1) biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen exhibited high inter-correlations in water quality mapping, with lead and cadmium also demonstrating a strong association; (2) The main point sources of contaminant were coking, metal mining, and smelting industries. The government should strengthen the regulation and control of these industries and prevent further pollution of the river; (3) We confirmed 4 key pollutants: COD, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Our study accurately predicted the future changes in this water quality index. The best results were obtained when the prediction period was 1 day. The prediction accuracies reached 85.85%, 47.15%, 85.66%, and 89.07%, respectively. In essence, this research developed effective water quality traceability and predictive analysis methods in semi-arid river basins. It provided an effective tool for water quality surveillance in semi-arid river basins and imparts a scientific scaffold for the environmental stewardship endeavors of pertinent authorities.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Qing-Wei-Zhi-Tong Micro-pills (QWZT) is herbal compound used in the treatment of GU, whose functions include clearing the stomach and fire, softening the liver and relieving pain. However, its mechanistic profile on host intestinal microbiota and metabolism has not been determined. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study aimed to observe the healing effect of QWZT on acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in a rat model and to preliminarily elucidate its possible therapeutic mechanism from the perspective of host intestinal microbiota and metabolism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Wistar male rats (7 weeks old; weight 180-200 g) were randomly divided into normal control group (NC), acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer group (GU), and QWZT treatment group (High dose: 1250 mg/kg/day, Middle dose: 625 mg/kg/day, Low dose: 312.5 mg/kg/day) of 6 rats each. An acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer rat model was constructed based on anatomical surgery. QWZT (High dose, Middle dose, and Low dose) was used to treat gastric ulcer rats for 7 days by gavage. At the end of treatment, the body weight, macroscopic condition of gastric tissue ulcers, pathological changes (HE staining), inflammatory factors, oxidative stress factors, and endocrine factors were assessed in each group of rats. Fresh feces and serum from each group of rats were collected for microbiome and metabolome analysis on the machine, respectively. Drug-disease common targets and functional pathways were captured based on network pharmacology. The complex network of Herbs-Targets-Pathways-Metabolites-Microbiota interactions was constructed. Ultimately, Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) evaluated the contribution of gut microbiota in disease. RESULTS: QWZT increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Bacteroides, Alloprevotella, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Lactobacillus, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, Parabacteroides, etc.), reduced the abundance of harmful bacteria (Micromonospora, Geobacter, Nocardioides, and Arenimonas, etc.), reduced the levels of inflammatory mediators (12,13-EpOME, 9,10-Epoxyoctadecenoic acid, SM(d18:1/16:0) and Leukotriene A4, etc.), restored host metabolic disorders (Linoleic acid metabolism, Glycerophospholipid metabolism, and Arachidonic acid metabolism), and regulated the level of cytokines (IL-6, TNF-a, SOD, MDA, PEG-2 and NO), ultimately exerting an anti-ulcer effect. Apart from that, FMT improved acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers in rats. CONCLUSION: QWZT improved acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers in rats by remodeling intestinal microbiota and regulating host metabolism. This work may promote the process of developing and utilizing clinical applications of QWZT.

RESUMO

Increasing studies have demonstrated that ginsenoside Rg3 (Rg3) plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, including allergic lower airway inflammation such as asthma. To investigate the role of Rg3 in allergic upper airway disease, the effect and therapeutic mechanism of Rg3 in allergic rhinitis (AR) were studied. Ovalbumin-induced AR model mice were intragastrically administered with Rg3. Nasal symptoms, levels of IgE, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, SOD and MDA in serum, and histopathological analysis of nasal mucosa were used to evaluate the effect of Rg3 on ameliorating AR in mice. Moreover, nasal mucosa samples from the normal control group, AR model group and high dosage of Rg3 were collected to perform omics analysis. The differentially expressed genes and significantly changed metabolites were screened based on transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses, respectively. Integrative analysis was further performed to confirm the hub genes, metabolites and pathways. After Rg3 intervention, the nasal symptoms and inflammatory infiltration were effectively improved, the levels of IgE, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13 and MDA were significantly reduced, and the level of SOD was obviously increased. The results of the qRT-PCR assay complemented the transcriptomic findings. Integrated analysis showed that Rg3 played an anti-AR role mainly by regulating the interaction network, which was constructed by 12 genes, 8 metabolites and 4 pathways. Our findings suggested that Rg3 had a therapeutic effect on ovalbumin-induced AR in mice by inhibiting inflammation development and reducing oxidative stress. The present study could provide a potential natural agent for the treatment of AR.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ophiocordyceps sinensis (OS), a medicinal fungus, has been made into OS preparations, which are frequently used as adjunctive therapy for patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) in China. It is necessary to assess the efficacy and safety of OS preparations in the adjunctive treatment of DKD by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. OBJECTIVE: Ophiocordyceps sinensis preparations were evaluated for their efficacy and safety as adjunctive therapy to conventional drugs (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)) for DKD. METHODS: We searched seven electronic literature databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing ACEI/ARB and OS combined with ACEI/ARB from inception up to March 2022. Two reviewers extracted data and assessed the risk of bias independently. Evidence certainty was rated using the GRADE system. Standardized mean difference (SMD) or mean difference (MD) was pooled with random effects models and was reported with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Meta-analysis, sensitivity analysis and Egger's test were performed using R software (version 14.2) (PROSPERO registration no. CRD42021248634). RESULTS: Thirty eight RCTs involving 3167 patients met the inclusion criteria. No trials were reported with outcomes about kidney disease progression and cardiovascular events. In meta-analysis, compared with the control group of ACEI/ARB alone, OS combined with ACEI/ARB can achieve better effects in the treatment of DKD on reducing serum creatinine (Scr) [MDScr =-11.48 95% CI [-15.78, -7.18], p < 0.01], blood urea nitrogen (BUN) [MDBUN= -1.00, 95% CI [-1.44, -0.55], p < 0.01], ß2-microglobulin (ß2-MG) [SMDß2-MG= -1.32, 95% CI [-2.27, -0.37], p < 0.01], cystatin C (CysC) [MDCysC=-0.64, 95% CI [-0.83, -0.45], p < 0.01], 24-h urine proteinuria (24hUP) [SMD24hUP= -1.99, 95% CI [-2.68; -1.31], p < 0.01], urine microalbumin (UALB) [MDUALB= -37.41, 95% CI [-44.76, -30.06], p < 0.01] and decreasing urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER) [MDUAER= -24.11, 95% CI [-30.54, -17.68], p < 0.01] and albumin creatinine ratio (ACR) [SMDACR = 1.01, 95% CI [-1.73, -0.29], p < 0.01]. The OS adjuvant treatment also improved outcomes of blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipid, inflammation and oxidative stress. No significant change in fasting blood glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), malondialdehyde (MDA), and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1) was detected. Yet, no significant difference was found about the adverse events between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Ophiocordyceps sinensis preparation combined with ACEI/ARB has beneficial influence on renal function, decrease proteinuria, dyslipidemia, and even oxidative stress and inflammation in DKD patients. However, there is no trial that evaluated outcomes of kidney disease progression and cardiovascular events. Future study should move beyond surrogate endpoints to actual cardiovascular or renal outcome benefits with an aim to explore effects of OS preparation in the long-term.

RESUMO

Tibetan medicine is an essential part of Chinese medicine and has unique theoretical experience and therapeutic advantages. According to the development principle of inheriting the essence, sticking to the truth, and keeping innovative, the supervision department should give clear and reasonable guidance considering the characteristics of Tibetan medicine, establish a standard system for quality control, clinical verification and evaluation, and accelerate the research and commercialization of new drugs. In view of the needs of drug supply-side reform and the current situation of Tibetan medicine and new pharmaceutical research, we ponder and provide suggestions on the confusion faced by the current supervision of Tibetan drug registration, hoping to contribute to the supervision strategy of Tibetan drug registration and the high-quality development of Tibetan medicine industry.

RESUMO

Background: Diabetic osteoporosis (DOP) is a progressive osteoblast dysfunction induced by high glucose, which has negative impacts on bone homeostasis. Qizhi Kebitong formula (QKF) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula for treating DOP. However, its role in the protection of DOP has not been clarified yet. Here, we aimed to explore the potential mechanisms of QKF on DOP development via in vivo experiment. Methods: Network pharmacology was used to detect the key targets and signaling pathways of QKF on DOP. The effects of QKF on DOP were examined by the phenotypic characteristics, micro-CT, and hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining. The predicted targets and pathways were validated by a streptozocin- (STZ-) induced mouse model. Subsequently, the levels of the selected genes and proteins were analyzed using qRT-PCR and Western blot. Finally, AutoDock and PyMOL were used for molecular docking. Results: In this study, 90 active compounds and 2970 related disease targets have been found through network pharmacology. And QKF could improve the microstructures of femur bone mass, reduce inflammatory cell infiltration, and downregulate the levels of TNF-α, IKBKB, IL-6, and IL-1ß. Moreover, the underlying effect of PI3K/Akt/NF-κB pathways was also recommended in the treatment. Conclusion: Altogether, our findings suggested that QKF could markedly alleviate osteoblast dysfunction by modulating the key targets and PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Ginseng volatile oil (GVO) is one of the main components of ginseng and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to characterize GVO chemical composition, and 73 volatile components were detected from GVO. Caenorhabditis elegans was used as animal model to further elucidate the antioxidant and anti-aging effects of GVO in vivo. The results suggested that GVO significantly prolonged the lifespan of C. elegans and promoted its health without damaging its reproductive capacity. In addition, GVO increased the antioxidant capacity and survival rate of nematodes after heat shock. Transcriptional sequencing showed that autophagy-related genes atg-4.2, atg-7, lgg-2, and cyd-1 were up-regulated, and superoxide dismutase 1 (sod-1) expression was increased after GVO pretreatment. Considering the role of autophagy and antioxidant in aging, the expression of autophagy substrate P62 protein in BC12921 strain was analyzed and found to decrease by more than 50.00% after treatment with GVO. In addition, the lifespan of SOD-1 mutant nematodes was not significantly different from that of the control group. SOD activity and autophagy were activated, which is a clear expression of hormesis. All these results suggest that GVO prolongs the lifespan and healthspan of C. elegans, and its biological functions may be related to hormesis.

RESUMO

Baseflow is an essential component of total surface runoff that is widely considered one of the most influential factors regarding water quality via nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. Previously, many researchers and policy makers have directed their efforts toward surface runoff pollution, largely ignoring nutrient delivery via baseflow. Taking a typical agriculture-intensive basin of northern China as an example, this study explored the spatiotemporal characteristics of baseflow and pollution load in relation to NPS pollution. Baseflow was quantified using digital filtering techniques, and the results together with observed pollution data were used to validate a physically based hydrological model, i.e., the Soil and Water Assessment Tool. Then, the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of NPS and baseflow pollution were investigated using the modeling results. Results indicated that baseflow contribution to total runoff accounted for more than 70% during the studied years (2016-2018), and 84.15% of the basin area showed non-point source pollution dominated by baseflow pollution; both baseflow and its pollution load were greater in the nonflood seasons (spring, autumn, and winter) than in the flood season (summer); the spatial distribution of baseflow total nitrogen and total phosphorus pollution intensity showed higher values in the east and lower values in the west; the scaling effects of baseflow and its pollution load was found with increasing basin area. The results of our study highlighted the necessity for management of pollution load via baseflow in the river basin and provided reference information for improvement of NPS pollution management in other similar basins.

RESUMO

Lakes in arid/semiarid regions face problems of insufficient inflow and degradation of water quality, which threaten the health of the lake ecosystem. Baiyangdian Lake (BYDL), the largest lake in the North China Plain, is confronted with such challenges. The objective of this study was to improve understanding of how changes in water level influence water quality in the BYDL at different temporal scales, especially related to implementations of intermittent environmental water allocation activities in the past two decades, by using data on monthly lake water level, climate factors of precipitation and temperature, and lake water quality. The Mann-Kendall method and continuous wavelet analysis revealed that the lake water level shows a significant decreasing trend after 1967, and the period of 16-year was identified as the principal period for 1950-2018. Based on cross-wavelet transform and wavelet coherence analysis, the periodic agreement and coherence between water level and climatic factors decreased after 1997, when environmental water allocations started, indicating that the influences of climatic factors, i.e., precipitation and temperature, became weak. By utilizing the cross-wavelet transform and wavelet coherence analysis methods, the relationships between lake water level and water quality parameters of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were investigated. We found that the change in source and amount of environmental water allocation is one possible reason for the temporal evolution in joint variability between lake water level and water quality. Meanwhile, a dilution effect of freshwater allocated to BYDL was detected in the time-frequency domain. However, the result also indicates that the driving mechanism of water quality is complex due to the combined impacts of water allocation, nonpoint source pollution in the rainy season, and nutrient release from lake sediment. Our findings improve the general understanding of changes in water level in lakes located in arid and semiarid regions under climate change and intensive human activities, and also provide valuable knowledge for decision making in aquatic ecosystem restoration of BYDL and other similar lakes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common orthopedic disease, which is one of the main causes of global chronic pain and motor function defect. For intractable LDH, the surgical treatment of percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED) is often used in clinical practice. Although the operation is relatively mature, there may still be some limitations and surgical risks delaying the recovery process of patients. Some studies have found that the combination of acupuncture therapy and PTED can bring more benefits to patients, but these conclusions are still lack of evidence support. Therefore, this study will adopt the method of meta-analysis to estimate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture combined with PTED in patients with LDH, in order to provide a basis for clinical decision-making. METHODS: This study will conduct a systematic search of the following databases: the Chinese databases China National Knowledge Infrastructure, formerly Chinese Biomedical Database, Wanfang Data, Chongqing VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, the PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science and The Cochrane library, from their inception to December 1, 2022. In addition, we will search their references to avoid missing other eligible studies. The language will be limited to English and Chinese. RevMan 5.4 will be used to perform the meta-analysis. And GRADE Profiler software will be used to rate the quality of evidence. RESULTS: The results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. CONCLUSION: This study can provide evidence support for acupuncture combined with PTED in the treatment of LDH.

RESUMO

Traditional lake phytoplankton diversity studies do not take into account the impact of ecological protection and restoration project policies. Here, a difference-in-differences (DID) model, which is commonly used to analyze the relative importance of economic factors, was used to evaluate the impact of such policies on phytoplankton diversity in lakes. Dongping Lake was used as the experimental group, and the upstream Nansi Lake was used as the control group. The phytoplankton diversity index of the experimental group and the control group was used as the explanatory variable of the DID model. Six environmental and socioeconomic factors, temperature and precipitation, were used as control variables in the DID model. The effects of ecological protection and restoration project policy on phytoplankton diversity in lakes were analyzed. Under the influence of policy implementation, the phytoplankton diversity in the experimental lake was improved by 2.79% compared with that in the control lake. Temperature and precipitation were the main factors affecting phytoplankton diversity in the two connected shallow lakes in the Shandong Peninsula. This study verified that DID models can be used to quantitatively analyze the impact of ecological protection and restoration project policies on phytoplankton diversity in lakes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is a host defense mechanism in the body after it is infected and damaged. If inflammation is not treated in time, then it may cause a variety of diseases, such as cancer and autoimmune diseases. Herbal essential oils are natural extracts that can suppress inflammation effectively and are expected to be used in therapeutic drugs for anti-inflammatory diseases in the future. Aim of the review. We review the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of essential oils derived from 16 herbs. Materials and methods. We searched the literature of the fields of anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory herbal essential oil activity published in English within the past five years via databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and The Web of Science). RESULTS: A total of 1932 papers were found by searching, and 132 papers were screened after removing duplicates and reading article titles. Fifteen articles met the requirements to be included in this review. Among those selected, 11 articles reported in vivo research results, and 10 articles showed research results. CONCLUSION: Essential oils extracted from herbs can reduce inflammation by regulating the release of inflammatory cytokines involved in multiple signalling pathways. Herbal essential oils are expected to be developed as anti-inflammatory drugs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Opioids are the most effective antinociceptive agents, they have undesirable side effects such as respiratory depressant and postoperative nausea and vomiting. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the antinociceptive efficacy of adjuvant magnesium sulphate to reduce intraoperative and postoperative opioids requirements and their related side effects during hysteroscopy. METHODS: Seventy patients scheduled for hysteroscopy were randomly divided into 2 groups. Patients in the magnesium group (Group M) received intravenous magnesium sulfate 50 mg/kg in 100 ml of isotonic saline over 15 min before anesthesia induction and then 15 mg/kg per hour by continuous intravenous infusion. Patients in the control group (Group C) received an equal volume of isotonic saline as placebo. All patients were anesthetized under a BIS guided monitored anesthesia care with propofol and fentanyl. Intraoperative hemodynamic variables were recorded and postoperative pain scores were assessed with verbal numerical rating scale (VNRS) 1 min, 15 min, 30 min, 1 h, and 4 h after recovery of consciousness. The primary outcome of our study was total amount of intraoperative and postoperative analgesics administered. RESULTS: Postoperative serum magnesium concentrations in Group C were significantly decreased than preoperative levels (0.86 ± 0.06 to 0.80 ± 0.08 mmol/L, P = 0.001) while there was no statistical change in Group M (0.86 ± 0.07 to 0.89 ± 0.07 mmol/L, P = 0.129). Bradycardia did not occur in either group and the incidence of hypotension was comparable between the two groups. Total dose of fentanyl given to patients in Group M was less than the one administered to Group C [100 (75-150) vs 145 (75-175) µg, median (range); P < 0.001]. In addition, patients receiving magnesium displayed lower VNRS scores at 15 min, 30 min, 1 h, and 4 h postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: In hysteroscopy, adjuvant magnesium administration is beneficial to reduce intraoperative fentanyl requirement and postoperative pain without cardiovascular side effects. Our study indicates that if surgical patients have risk factors for hypomagnesemia, assessing and correcting magnesium level will be necessary. RESUMO

Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (AECOPD) is an irreversible inflammatory airways disease responsible for global health burden, involved with a complex condition of immunological change. Exacerbation-mediated neutrophilia is an important factor in the pathogenesis of cigarette smoke-induced AECOPD. Ginsenoside Rg3, a red-ginseng-derived compound, has multiple pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities. Here, we investigated a protective role of Rg3 against AECOPD, focusing on neutrophilia. 14-week-cigarette smoke (CS) exposure and non-typeable Haemophilus inflenzae (NTHi) infection were used to establish the AECOPD murine model. Rg3 (10, 20, 40 mg/kg) was administered intragastrically from the 12th week of CS exposure before infection, and this led to improved lung function and lung morphology, and reduced neutrophilic inflammation, indicating a suppressive effect on neutrophil infiltration by Rg3. Further investigations on the mechanism of Rg3 on neutrophils were carried out using bronchial epithelial cell (BEAS-2B) and neutrophil co-culture and transepithelial migration model. Pre-treatment of neutrophils with Rg3 reduced neutrophil migration, which seemed to be the result of inhibition of phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) 3-kinases (PI3K) activation within neutrophils. Thus, Rg3 could inhibit exacerbation-induced neutrophilia in COPD by negatively regulating PI3K activities in neutrophils. This study provides a potential natural drug against AECOPD neutrophil inflammation.

RESUMO

In traditional Chinese medicine theory, blood stasis syndrome (BSS), characterized by blood flow retardation and blood stagnation, is one of the main pathologic mechanisms and clinical syndromes of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Rhodiola wallichiana var. cholaensis injection (RWCI) is made from dry roots and stems of RWC via the processes of decoction, alcohol precipitation, filtration, and dilution. Studies indicated the extracts of RWC could alleviate CVDs; however, the mechanism had not been illustrated. In the present study, the acute blood stasis rat model was established to investigate the pathogenesis of BSS and the therapeutic mechanism of RWCI against BSS. Hemorheological parameters (whole blood viscosity and plasma viscosity) and inflammatory factors (TNF-α and IL-6) were used to evaluate the success of the BSS rat model and RWCI efficacy. 14 and 33 differential metabolites were identified from plasma and urine samples using the metabolomics approach based on ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The results of multivariate analysis displayed that there were significant separations among model, control, and treatment groups, but the high-dose RWCI treatment group was closer to the control group. 9 perturbed metabolic pathways were related to BSS's development and RWCI intervention. 5 metabolic pathways (arachidonic acid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, retinol metabolism, and steroid hormone biosynthesis) showed apparent correlations. These differential metabolites and perturbed metabolic pathways might provide a novel view to understand the pathogenesis of BSS and the pharmacological mechanism of RWCI.

RESUMO

The heterogeneity of asthma involves complex pathogenesis leading to confusion regarding the choice of therapeutic strategy. In the clinic, asthma is commonly classified as having either eosinophilic asthma (EA) or non-eosinophilic asthma (NEA) phenotypes. Microbiota colonizing in airways has been demonstrated to induce distinct phenotypes of asthma and the resistance to steroids. Rhodiola wallichiana var. cholaensis (RWC) has the potential to alleviate asthmatic inflammation according to recent studies, but its pharmacological mechanisms remain unclarified. In our study, murine asthmatic phenotypes were established and treated with RWC and/or dexamethasone (DEX). Combined treatment with RWC and DEX could improve spirometry and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in asthmatic phenotypes, alleviate steroid resistance in NEA, and reduce the inflammatory infiltration of the both phenotypes. The combined treatment increased Th1, regulated the imbalance of Th2/Th1, and decreased the related cytokines in EA. As for NEA, the combined treatment reduced Th17 and promoted the accumulation of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in lung. A microbiome study based on 16S rDNA sequencing technique revealed the significantly changed structure of the lower airway microbiota after combined treatment in NEA, with 4 distinct genera and 2 species identified. OPLS-DA models of metabolomics analysis based on UPLC-Q/TOF-MS technique identified 34 differentiated metabolites and 8 perturbed metabolic pathways. A joint multiomics study predicted that the colonized microbiota in airways might be associated with susceptibility of asthma and steroid resistance, which involved systematic and pulmonary metabolic perturbation. In summary, the pharmacological network of RWC included the complicated interaction mechanisms of immune regulation, microbiota change, and metabolic perturbation.

RESUMO

Lake eutrophication is characterized by a variety of indicators, including nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, chemical oxygen demand, chlorophyll levels, and water transparency. In this study, a multidimensional similarity cloud model (MSCM) is combined with a random weighting method to reduce the impacts of random errors in eutrophication monitoring data and the fuzziness of lake eutrophication definitions on the consistency and reliability of lake eutrophication evaluations. Measured samples are assigned to lake eutrophication levels based on the cosine of the angle between the cloud digital characteristics vectors of each sample and those of each eutrophication grade. To field test this method, the eutrophication level of Nansi Lake in Shandong Province was evaluated based on monitoring data collected in 2009-2016. Results demonstrate that, in 2009 and in 2011-2015, the upper lake of Nansi Lake exhibited moderate eutrophication while the lower lake exhibited mild eutrophication. In 2010, 2016, elevated concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus led to an increase in the eutrophication level of the lower lake, matching that of the upper lake. Based on the results of these field tests, we conclude that the MSCM presented in this study provides a more flexible and effective method for evaluating lake eutrophication data than the existing multidimensional normal cloud model.

RESUMO

A simple, transparent and reliable method for evaluating non-point source pollution (NPSP) risks to drinking water source areas lacking observational data is proposed herein. The NPSP risks are assessed by using nutrient budget models for total nitrogen and total phosphorus, making the best use of remote sensing and field survey data. We demonstrate its potential using a case study of the Chaihe Reservoir in northeastern China. Fertilizer inputs and crop-uptake outputs were estimated based on normalized difference vegetation index, which is derived from remote sensing as indicators of crop growth and production. The nutrient balances for this area showed surpluses of both N and P within the soil system. Estimated imbalances per unit area were consistent with statistical relationships derived from all Chinese counties, demonstrating that the proposed method is reliable. The surplus P amounts were higher than the standard threshold for NPSP risks, indicating the existence of a potential contamination risk of P to this drinking water source.

RESUMO

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory pulmonary disease characterized by continuous, progressive limitation of airflow. Airway remodelling, which is correlated with epithelial-mesenchymal transitions (EMTs), is a typical pathophysiological change of COPD. Amygdalin, an active ingredient in the traditional Chinese medicine bitter almond with extensive pharmacological effects, was shown to inhibit tissue fibrosis in recent studies. In this study, a human bronchial epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B) and mice were exposed to cigarette smoke, and EMT levels were investigated after treatment with different concentrations of amygdalin. Morphology was assessed by immunohistochemical staining. Evaluation of the expression of TGF-ß1, smad2/3, and p-smad2/3 in lung tissue was conducted out via ELISA, Western blot, and real-time PCR. The results showed that E-cadherin expression was significantly increased, whereas vimentin, TGF-ß1, and phosphorylated smad2/3 (p-smad2/3) expression was markedly decreased in the amygdalin-treated groups compared with the model group. Therefore, our study demonstrated a protective role of amygdalin in the murine EMT process after COPD.

RESUMO

Antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx) decomposes hydroperoxides by utilizing the different redox chemistry of the selenium and sulfur. Here, we report a Se-catalysed para-amination of phenols while, in contrast, the reactions with sulfur donors are stoichiometric. A catalytic amount of phenylselenyl bromide smoothly converts N-aryloxyacetamides to N-acetyl p-aminophenols. When the para position was substituted (for example, with tyrosine), the dearomatization 4,4-disubstituted cyclodienone products were obtained. A combination of experimental and computational studies was conducted and suggested the weaker Se-N bond plays a key role in the completion of the catalytic cycle. Our method extends the selenium-catalysed processes to the functionalisation of aromatic compounds. Finally, we demonstrated the mild nature of the para-amination reaction by generating an AIEgen 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) product in a fluorogenic fashion in a PBS buffer.
