OBJECTIVES: To explore the effects of online mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on the anxiety and depression status, and quality of life in the caregivers of patients with severe mental disorders. METHODS: Ninety-three caregivers for patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, who were hospitalized in Yunnan Provincial Mental Hospital in March 2021, were enrolled and randomly divided into control group (n=47) and MBSR intervention group (n=46). Both groups received basic health education and rehabilitation skill training, while the intervention group received additional online MBSR for 8 weeks. The anxiety and depression status, and the quality of life of the caregivers were evaluated by Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) before and 8 weeks after intervention, respectively. RESULTS: Thirteen caregivers dropped out of the study, and 80 subjects (40 in each group) were included in the final analysis. At the baseline, there were no significant differences in SAS, SDS and SF-36 scores between two groups (all P>0.05). Compared with the baseline, SAS and SDS scores in the intervention group significantly decreased after 8 weeks of intervention (both P<0.01) and were significantly lower than those in the control group (both P<0.01). There were no significant changes in the control group (all P>0.05). Except the physiological function dimension, the total score and the scores of each dimension of SF-36 in the intervention group were significantly increased after 8-week intervention (all P<0.05), and were significantly higher than those in the control group (all P<0.01). There were no significant changes in the control group before and after intervention (all P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Online MBSR can reduce the anxiety and depression levels, improve the quality of life in the caregivers of patients with severe mental disorders.

In the present study, differences in metabolic pathways between patients with and without cancer-related fatigue (CRF) were examined to identify metabolic serum biomarkers of CRF. In this preliminary study, metabolic profiling was applied to analyze the serum samples from 14 patients with CRF and 11 non-CRF individuals (non-fatigue cancer survivors) by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis was adopted to evaluate the differences between the CRF and non-CRF groups. The CRF group was characterized by increases in phosphatidylethanolamine (PE; 18:0/0:0), LysoPE (0:0/20:4 and 0:0/16:0), lysophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC; 20:4, 22:4 and 16:0) and LysoPC/PC, phosphatidylserine (21:0/0:0), glycerophosphocholine and N-docosahexaenoyl γ-aminobutyric acid. Furthermore, decreases in anandamide, uric acid, dihydrouracil, LysoPE (0:0/22:5), 2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-2(2'-carboxyethyl)-6-hydroxychroman, 19(R)-hydroxy-prostaglandin F1α, N-(3α,12α-dihydroxy-5ß-cholan-24-oyl)-glycine, ketoleucine, indoxyl sulfate, α-N-phenylacetyl-L-glutamine and 1-linoleoyl-glycerophosphocholine were detected. These data indicate a possible disturbance in the metabolism of phospholipids and adjustments in the endocannabinoid system. The metabonomic approach may be helpful to determine the pathophysiological mechanisms of CRF and the identification of potential biomarkers for the accurate diagnosis of CRF. All clinical data were obtained from the 'Research on the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine comprehensive intervention in cancer-related fatigue' (TCM-CRF) project. Medical Ethical Approval for TCM-CRF was approved by the Chinese Ethics Committee of Registering Clinical Trials. The approval number for the TCM-CRF study was ChiECRCT-2013038, and the TCM-CRF study was completed.

A new, green, and cost-effective magnetic solid-phase extraction of aflatoxins and ochratoxins from edible vegetable oils samples was developed using polydopamine-coated magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PDA@Fe3O4-MWCNTs) as the absorbent. PDA@Fe3O4-MWCNTs nanomaterials were prepared by chemical co-precipitation and in situ oxidation and self-polymerization of dopamine and was characterized. Factors affecting MSPE and the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent to mycotoxins were studied, and the optimal extraction conditions of MSPE and the complexity of the adsorption process were determined. Based on this, the magnetic solid-phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection method (MSPE-HPLC-FLD) was established for determining six mycotoxins [aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2, and ochratoxin A (OTA) and OTB)] in vegetable oils. The recovery was 70.15%~89.25%, and RSD was ≤6.4%. PDA@Fe3O4-MWCNTs showed a high affinity toward aflatoxins and ochratoxins, allowing selective extraction and quantification of aflatoxins and ochratoxins from complex sample matrices.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the active ingredients of Huangqi Sijunzi Decoction (HQSJZD) and the targets in treating cancer-related fatigue (CRF) so as to investigate the treatment mechanism of HQSJZD for CRF. METHODS: This study adopted the method of network pharmacology. The active ingredients and targets of HQSJZD were retrieved, and the targets of HQSJZD in treating CRF were obtained using a Venn diagram. Next, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed using the String database. The core targets of HQSJZD in treating CRF were identified through topological analysis, and functional annotation analysis and pathway enrichment analysis were carried out. Subsequently, a compound-disease-target regulatory network was constructed using Cystoscape 3.8.0 software. RESULTS: A total of 250 targets of HQSJZD ingredients, 1447 CRF-related genes, and 144 common targets were obtained. Through topological analysis, 61 core targets were screened. Bioinformatics annotation of these genes identified 2366 gene ontology (GO) terms and 172 enriched Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways. CONCLUSION: The active ingredients in HQSJZD, that is, quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol, and naringenin, may act on AKT1, IL-6, VEGFA, MAPK3, CASP3, JUN, and EGFR to regulate the PI3K-Akt, TNF, and IL-17 signaling pathways, thereby suppressing inflammatory response, tumor gene expression, and tumor angiogenesis to treat CRF. This study investigated the pharmacological basis and mechanism of HQSJZD in the treatment of CRF using systematic pharmacology, which provides an important reference for further elucidation of the anti-CRF mechanism and clinical applications of HQSJZD, and also provides a method protocol for similar studies in the future.

An effective method was developed for the determination of 77 pesticide residues in eight kinds of herbal tea by modified QuEChERS and high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The target compounds were extracted with 1% (v/v) acetic acid-acetonitrile and 1 g ammonium acetate, and purified by 4 g MgSO4, 0.05 g C18, 0.50 g primary secondary amine (PSA) sorbent and 0.05 g graphitized carbon black (GCB). The 0.1% (v/v) formic acid aqueous solution and acetonitrile were used as the mobile phases. The extracts were separated on a Venusil MP C18 chromatographic column using a positive electrospray ionization (ESI) and negative ESI source under the selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. The analytes were quantified by the matrix match standard solutions. The good linearities were obtained in the range of 0.5-100.0 µ g/L, and the correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.995. The average recoveries of the 77 pesticide residues ranged from 70.3% to 110.0%, and RSDs were in the range of 2.6%-9.8%. The limits of detection were 1.0-10.0 µ g/kg. The method is sensitive, accurate and precise, and can meet the requirements for the determination of pesticide residues.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is considered to be a well-defined subject that has caused high morbidity and mortality. In elderly women diagnosed with PMOP, low bone mass and fragile bone strength have been proven to significantly increase risk of fragility fractures. Currently, various anabolic and anti-resorptive therapies have been employed in an attempt to retain healthy bone mass and strength. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs), first applied in treating patients with delayed fracture healing and nonunions, may turn out to be another potential and effective therapy for PMOP. PEMFs can enhance osteoblastogenesis and inhibit osteoclastogenesis, thus contributing to an increase in bone mass and strength. However, accurate mechanisms of the positive effects of PEMFs on PMOP remain to be further elucidated. This review attempts to summarize recent advances of PEMFs in treating PMOP based on clinical trials, and animal and cellular studies. Possible mechanisms are also introduced, and the future possibility of application of PEMFs on PMOP are further explored and discussed. Five Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strains were isolated from cankers of Populus x euramericana collected from different locations in Puyang city, Henan Province, China. The five strains were characterized by nutritional and physiological testing and DNA sequence analysis. Haemolysis was not observed on agar media supplemented with sheep erythrocytes. The strains could be distinguished from members of most species of the genus Acinetobacter by their inability to assimilate L-arginine and benzoate. The five strains formed a single branch in phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA, gyrB and rpoB individual gene sequence analysis,indicating that they all belonged to a single taxon within the genus Acinetobacter. DNA-DNA hybridization results indicated that the five isolates represented to a single species that was separate from Acinetobacter puyangensis. On the basis of the phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, the five strains are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Acinetobacter, for which the name Acinetobacter populi sp. nov. is proposed. The typestrain of A. populi sp. nov. is PBJ7T (CFCC 11170T=KCTC 42272T).

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical curative effect of Chinese medicine Bushen Huoxue Granule(补肾活血颗粒, BHG) on Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with depressive state. METHODS: Sixty-two PD patients with depressive state were randomly assigned to two groups by using a random number table, 31 in each group. Madopar was given to all as the conventional treatment. The fluoxetine hydrochloride dispersible tablet was given to the patients in the control group and BHG was given to those in the treatment group. The therapeutic course for all was 12 weeks. Before and after treatment, Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD) was applied to judge the curative effect, and the changes of cerebral neurotransmitters levels in the brain of patients were detected by encephalofluctuograph technique. RESULTS: The scores of HAMD in the two groups were decreased markedly after 12-week treatment. It was lower in the treatment group than that in the control group with significant difference (P<0.01). The contents of norepinephrine (NE) and 5-serotonin (5-HT) in the PD patients were obviously lower than normal value. There was no significant difference between the two groups before treatment (P>0.05). The contents of NE and 5-HT were all increased in the two groups after treatment (P<0.05), with significant differences between the two groups (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: BHG could increase the contents of NE and 5-HT in PD patients' brain to improve the depressive state of PD patients.

Two Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped strains, BQ4-1(T) and NHI3-2, isolated respectively from the healthy and diseased part of Populus ×euramericana canker bark, were characterized using a polyphasic approach. Chemotaxonomic characterization supported the inclusion of the two strains in the genus Acinetobacter, with genomic DNA G+C contents (42.5-43 mol%) within the range observed for this genus (38-47 mol%) and 9-octadecenoic acid (C18 : 1ω9c, 39.87 %), hexadecanoic acid (C16 : 0, 11.26 %) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c, 18.90 %) as major fatty acids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA, rpoB and gyrB gene sequences revealed that strains BQ4-1(T) and NHI3 did not cluster with any species with validly published names, and formed a distinct cluster with 99-100 % bootstrap support on three phylogenetic trees within the genus Acinetobacter. Acid was not produced from d-glucose, and haemolysis was not observed on agar media supplemented with sheep erythrocytes. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, the two strains are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Acinetobacter, for which the name Acinetobacter puyangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BQ4-1(T) (= CFCC 10780(T) = JCM 18011(T)).

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of Bushen Huoxue Herbs on depression of patients with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: Ninety-six patients were randomized into two groups with 46 patients in the treatment group and 50 patients in the control group. Both groups took western medicine as basic treatment. The treatment group was treated with Bushen Huoxue Herbs additionally. The observation was carried out for 9 months. Used Encephalofluctuograph Technology (ET) and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) to measure the changes of cerebral neurotransmitters and scale scores in both groups at baseline time, 3, 6 and 9 months later to evaluate the effects of Bushen Huoxue Herbs. RESULTS: In the treatment group, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), noradrenaline (NE) and dopamine (DA) levels were increased significantly when compared with pretreatment (P < 0.05), especially of 5-HT and DA levels (P < 0.01); Compared with the control group, 5-HT and DA levels were increased significantly (P < 0.05). After treatment, the scores of the HAMD scale was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). No adverse effects were found in this trial. CONCLUSION: Bushen Huoxue Herbs can improve depression of PD patients by increasing the levels of 5-HT, NE and DA in the brain and decreasing the scores of the HAMD scale with reliable effects.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of brachytherapy with computed tomography-guided percutaneous radioactive I-125 seeds interstitial implantation (ISI) synchronized chemotherapy and Chinese medicine (CM) for the treatment of advanced stage of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: Ninety patients diagnosed with NSCLC by biopsy were randomly assigned to three groups: the synchronized therapy group (A), the chemotherapy plus CM-treated group (B), and the chemotherapy-treated group (C); a 2-month course of treatment was administered to them all. The effectiveness of treatment was evaluated based on tumor size, tumor markers (carcinoembryonic, squamous cell carcinoma-associated antigen, and cytokeratin 19 fragment), clinical symptoms, and quality of life (QOL) in patients. RESULTS: The total effective rates of Groups A to C were 83.33%, 46.67%, and 43.33%, respectively. The tumor markers were reduced obviously in Group A, showing signifificant difference compared with those in the other two groups. Additionally, QOL was elevated and cancer-related symptoms were alleviated more signifificant in Group A than those in Group C (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The synchronized therapy of I-125 implantation with chemotherapy and CM was a safe therapeutic method and can be regarded as a new mode for treatment of advanced-stage NSCLC.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism underlying the therapeutic effect of Bushen Huoxue Decoction (BHD), a traditional Chinese medicinal preparation, on dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) in the brain of rat models of Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: A total of 120 SD rats were randomized into normal control group, saline model group and BHD-treated group. In the latter two groups, PD rat models were established by direct injection of 6-OHDA to destruct the substantia nigra compact part (SNC) with corresponding treatments. The behavioral changes of the rats were observed. Radioimmunoassay was employed to determine the changes in the equilibrium dissociation constant (Kd) and maximal binding capacity (B(max)) of DRD2, and immunohistochemistry was used to observe the number of the DRD2-positive cells in the brain of the rats. RESULTS: BHD can markedly improve the behavioral abnormalities of PD model rats. Compared with those in the saline model group, the B(max) of DRD2 in the damaged hemisphere increased while the Kd of BHD decreased significantly after BHD treatment (P<0.01). The number of DRD2-positive cells in BHD-treated group was significantly higher than that in the model group (80.9∓13.59 vs 11.15∓6.78, P<0.01), but showed no significant difference from that in the normal control group (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: BHD can improve the behavioral abnormalities and increase the cerebral expression and affinity of DRD2 in PD rat models.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of acupuncture on depression and insomnia of malignant tumor patients. METHODS: Eighty cases of cancer related depression and sleep disorders were randomly divided into 2 groups: treatment 1 group (acupuncture n = 40) and control group (Fluoxetione n = 40). All patients were assessed by Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Hemilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) after treatment for 30 days. RESULTS: Before treatment the SDS and HAMD scores of the trial group were 64.12 +/- 5.34 and 20.92 +/- 2.38, those of the control group were 64.24 +/- 4.98 and 20.72 +/- 2.74, after treatment the SDS and HAMD scores of the trial group were 43.64 +/- 5.28 and 9.88 +/- 1.27 respectively, significantly lower than those of the control group (50.76 +/- 5.42 and 13.72 +/- 2.05 respectively, both P < 0.05). Before treatment the PSQI score of the trial group and the control group were 14.48 +/- 1.71 and 13.92 +/- 2.59, after treatment the PSQI score of the trial group was 7.92 +/- 1.22 after treatment, significantly lower than those of the control group (11.44 +/- 1.89, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can effectively reduce malignant-related depression, improve sleep quality, and help to improve the quality of life of cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of Bushen Huoxue Decoction (BHD) on the orphan receptor (Nurr1) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the brain of rats with Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: One hundred and twenty SD rats were divided into 100 in the model group and 20 in the normal control group, fifty-eight SD rats from the model group, established into PD model successfully by injuring their substantia nigra (SSN) with 6-hydroxydopamine, were divided equally into the model group and the test group, and they were treated with saline and BHD, respectively, for eight successive weeks. The change in the rats' behavior before and after treatment was observed by counting the cycles of rotation induced by apomorphine injection; the pathology of neurons, level of Nurr1 mRNA expression, and amount of TH positive cells in SSN were observed after treatment. RESULTS: The rats' behavior was improved in the tested group significantly, the rotation cycle after treatment being 84.0 ± 20.0 cycles/40 min, which was significantly lower than that in the model group (377.0 ± 62.3 cycles/40 min, P<0.01). Besides, the Nurr1 mRNA expression and TH positive cell in the test group were 0.97 ± 0.15 and 49.40 ± 14.72, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the model group, 0.22 ± 0.03 and 5.45 ± 2.58, respectively (all P<0.01). CONCLUSION: BHD could treat PD by enhancing the Nurr1 mRNA expression, increasing the TH content in brain, and promoting the repairing of injured neuron in cerebral SSN.
