ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Licorice is widely used clinically as one of the most famous traditional Chinese herbs. Its herb roasted with honey is called honey-processed licorice (HPL). Modern studies have shown that HPL has a stronger cardioprotective ability compared to raw licorice (RL), however the material basis and mechanism of action of the potential cardioprotection have not been fully elucidated. AIM OF THE STUDY: To screen and validate the material basis of cardioprotection exerted by HPL and to preliminarily predict the potential mechanism of action. MATERIALS AND METHODS: UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS was used to analyze HPL samples with different processing levels, and differential compounds were screened out through principal component analysis. Network pharmacology and molecular docking were applied to explore the association between differential compounds and doxorubicin cardiomyopathy and their mechanisms of action were predicted. An in vitro model was established to verify the cardioprotective effects of differential compounds. RESULTS: Six differential compounds were screened as key components of HPL for potential cardioprotection. Based on network pharmacology, 113 potential important targets for the treatment of Dox-induced cardiotoxicity were screened. KEGG enrichment analysis predicted that the PI3K-Akt pathway was closely related to the mechanism of action of active ingredients. Molecular docking results showed that the six differential compounds all had good binding activity with Nrf2 protein. In addition, in vitro experiments had shown that five of the active ingredients (liquiritin, isoliquiritin, liquiritigenin, isoliquiritigenin, and licochalcone A) can significantly increase Dox-induced H9c2 cell viability, SOD activity, and mitochondrial membrane potential, significantly reduces MDA levels and inhibits ROS generation. CONCLUSION: Liquiritin, isoliquiritin, liquiritigenin, isoliquiritigenin and licochalcone A are key components of HPL with potential cardioprotective capabilities. Five active ingredients can alleviate Dox-induced cardiotoxicity by inhibiting oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage.

In the current study, tea saponin, identified as the primary bioactive constituent in seed pomace of Camellia oleifera Abel., was meticulously extracted and hydrolyzed to yield five known sapogenins: 16-O-tiglogycamelliagnin B (a), camelliagnin A (b), 16-O-angeloybarringtogenol C (c), theasapogenol E (d), theasapogenol F (e). Subsequent biotransformation of compound a facilitated the isolation of six novel metabolites (a1-a6). The anti-inflammatory potential of these compounds was assessed using pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecular patterns molecules (DAMPs)-mediated cellular inflammation models. Notably, compounds b and a2 demonstrated significant inhibitory effects on both lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1)-induced inflammation, surpassing the efficacy of the standard anti-inflammatory agent, carbenoxolone. Conversely, compounds d, a3, and a6 selectivity targeted endogenous HMGB1-induced inflammation, showcasing a pronounced specificity. These results underscore the therapeutic promise of C. oleifera seed pomace-derived compounds as potent agents for the management of inflammatory diseases triggered by infections and tissue damage.

In the present study, the chronic heat stress (CHS) broiler model was developed to investigate the potential protection mechanism of organic selenium (selenomethionine, SeMet) on CHS-induced skeletal muscle growth retardation and poor meat quality. Four hundred Arbor Acres male broilers (680 ± 70 g, 21 d old) were grouped into 5 treatments with 8 replicates of 10 broilers per replicate. Broilers in the control group were raised in a thermoneutral environment (22 ± 2 °C) and fed with a basal diet. The other four treatments were exposed to hyperthermic conditions (33 ± 2 °C, 24 h in each day) and fed on the basal diet supplied with SeMet at 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 mg Se/kg, respectively, for 21 d. Results showed that CHS reduced (P < 0.05) the growth performance, decreased (P < 0.05) the breast muscle weight and impaired the meat quality of breast muscle in broilers. CHS induced protein metabolic disorder in breast muscle, which increased (P < 0.05) the expression of caspase 3, caspase 8, caspase 9 and ubiquitin proteasome system related genes, while decreased the protein expression of P-4EBP1. CHS also decreased the antioxidant capacity and induced mitochondrial stress and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in breast muscle, which increased (P < 0.05) the ROS levels, decreased the concentration of ATP, increased the protein expression of HSP60 and CLPX, and increased (P < 0.05) the expression of ER stress biomarkers. Dietary SeMet supplementation linearly increased (P < 0.05) breast muscle Se concentration and exhibited protective effects via up-regulating the expression of the selenotranscriptome and several key selenoproteins, which increased (P < 0.05) body weight, improved meat quality, enhanced antioxidant capacity and mitigated mitochondrial stress and ER stress. What's more, SeMet suppressed protein degradation and improved protein biosynthesis though inhibiting the caspase and ubiquitin proteasome system and promoting the mTOR-4EBP1 pathway. In conclusion, dietary SeMet supplementation increases the expression of several key selenoproteins, alleviates mitochondrial dysfunction and ER stress, improves protein biosynthesis, suppresses protein degradation, thus increases the body weight and improves meat quality of broilers exposed to CHS.

Conventional antibiotic treatment struggles to eliminate biofilms in wounds due to the formation compact barrier. Herein, we fabricate magnetic pandanus fruit-like nanorobots (NRs) that function as drug carriers while exhibit excellent maneuverability for enhanced antibacterial tasks. Specifically, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is self-assembled on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, loaded with a small quantity of ciprofloxacin, and covered with a layer of polydopamine (PDA). Energized by external magnetic fields, the NRs (F@Z/C/P) are steered in defined direction to penetrate the infection tissues, and effectively arrive targeted areas for pH stimulated drug release and near-infrared triggered phototherapy, contributing to an antibacterial rate of >99.9 %. The Zn2+ in ZIF-8 and the catechol group in PDA form catechol-ZIF-8-drug structures, which effectively reduce drug release by 11 % in high pH environments and promote rapid drug release by 14 % in low pH environments compared to NRs without PDA. Additionally, F@Z/C/P can remove the biofilms and bacteria in Staphylococcus aureus infected wounds, and eventually be discharged from the infected site after treatment, leading to faster healing with an intact epidermis and minimal harm to surrounding tissues and organs. The study provides a promising strategy for tackling biofilm-associated infections in vivo through the use of multi-functional NRs.

To assess the efficacy of moxibustion for diabetic foot, and compile the findings of randomised clinical trials. China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Medicine, WanFang Database, Embase, Chinese Scientific Journal Database and Web of Science were from the establishment to January, 2024 were searched. Randomised controlled trials, which evaluated the effects of moxibustion were included. A total of 12 randomised controlled trials involving 1196 patients were included. According to the pooled results of this meta-analysis, effective rate (relative risk 1.16, 95% confidence intervals, CI [1.11, 1.22]), healing time (mean difference [MD] -6.27, 95% CI [-8.68, -3.86]), wound area (MD 3.46, 95% CI [0.84, 6.09]), and ankle brachial index (MD 0.14, 95% CI [0.03, 0.24]) were statistically significant compared to the control group. This study suggests that moxibustion treatment has the potential for improving symptoms of diabetic foot. However, future in-depth research on the benefits and harms of moxibustion for the diabetic foot is needed before it can be accepted as an evidence-based treatment.

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction associated with macrophage overactivation. Targeted therapy against macrophages is considered a promising strategy for sepsis treatment. Mollugin (MLG), a compound extracted from traditional Chinese medicine Rubia cordifolia L., possesses anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of MLG in macrophages and its therapeutic role in CLP-induced sepsis in mice. The results demonstrated that MLG downregulated the inflammatory response induced by LPS or tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) in macrophages. Mechanistically, MLG suppressed the phosphorylation of TAK1, the upstream modulator of IKKα/ß and MAPKs, thereby inhibiting the pro-inflammatory signaling transduction of NF-κB and MAPKs. Additionally, MLG also activated the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway, reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species. CETSA and molecular docking analyses revealed that MLG could effectively bind to TAK1 and Keap1, which may be involved in the inhibition of TAK1- NF-κB/MAPKs and activation of Nrf2 mediated by MLG. Animal study demonstrated that MLG ameliorated inflammatory injury of lung and liver in CLP-induced sepsis mice probably by reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, our study suggests that bi-directional roles of MLG in improving sepsis via blocking the TAK1-NF-κB/MAPKs and activating Nrf2 pathways, indicating its potential as a promising candidate drug for sepsis treatment.

Background: In the context of global aging, the characteristics of chronic diseases seriously affect the quality of life of older adults. It is urgent to carry out continuous nursing basis for older adult patients with chronic diseases. In view of the remarkable efficacy of Chinese medicine in the treatment of chronic diseases, this study may help to understand the demand for "Internet + Chinese medicine" home care service and its influencing factors of older adult chronic disease patients, and to provide a reference basis for improving the quality of life of the older adult chronic disease population. Methods: This is a mixed study. The quantitative study adopted the convenience sampling method, and a total of 308 patients in a third-grade hospital in Shaanxi Province were investigated by general data questionnaire, traditional Chinese medicine service demand questionnaire, traditional Chinese medicine knowledge questionnaire, older adult Chinese medicine attitude questionnaire, and home care demand questionnaire from March to April 2022. In the qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were adopted, and patients were interviewed until the content was saturated. Colaizzi analysis method was used to analyze and summarize the topic of the interview data. Results: 308 valid questionnaires were collected, and the patients scored (58.42 ± 17.16) on the demand for TCM nursing services, (59.86 ± 11.54) on the knowledge of TCM, (73.03 ± 9.11) on the attitude toward TCM, and (136.84 ± 46.39) on the demand for home care. The results of multiple linear regression showed that learning about the nursing service pathway, knowledge of general knowledge of Chinese medicine, and attitude toward Chinese medicine among the older adult and home care demand were the influencing factors of the demand for Chinese medicine nursing services for older adult patients with chronic diseases (p < 0.05). The results of the in-depth interviews were summarized into three themes: facilitating factor, hindering factor, and the "Internet + Chinese medicine" multiple needs of home care. Conclusion: Older adult patients with chronic diseases have a high intention of home care demand and they are affected by multiple factors. Consequently, the actual demand situation of older adult patients with chronic diseases should be used as a guide to provide directed and diversified Chinese medicine home care services to meet the individualized needs of the older adult.

The identification of medicinal materials is the premise and guarantee of drug safety. The majority of scientific researchers are bound to favor the simple, fast, effective, and inexpensive identification process of herbals. Rhodiola crenulata is a traditional Tibetan medicine grown at high altitudes, mainly distributed in Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan regions of China. Rhodiola crenulate possesses multiple bioactivities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-hypoxia, and antioxidant properties, and has great potential for development. With the increasing market demand and a rapid decrease in resource content, a large number of confused products of Rhodiola crenulata have been troubling people. Therefore, this protocol introduces a standard process for the identification of Rhodiola crenulata in the field combined with routine laboratory testing. The combination of habitat, microscopic features, and thin-layer chromatography will undoubtedly identify Rhodiola crenulata quickly, efficiently, and economically, contributing to the continuous development of Tibetan medicine and the quality control of medicinal materials.

As global warming continues, the phenomenon of heat stress (HS) in broilers occurs frequently. The alleviating effect of different selenium (Se) sources on HS-induced hepatic lipid metabolism disorders in broilers remains unclear. This study compared the protective effects of four Se sources (sodium selenite; selenium yeast; selenomethionine; nano-Se) on HS-induced hepatic lipid metabolism disorder and the corresponding response of selenotranscriptome in the liver of broilers. The results showed that HS-induced liver injury and hepatic lipid metabolism disorder, which were reflected in the increased activity of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), the increased concentration of triacylglycerol (TG) and total cholesterol (TC), the increased activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT) and fatty acid synthase (FAS), and the decreased activity of hepatic lipase (HL) in the liver. The hepatic lipid metabolism disorder was accompanied by the increased mRNA expression of lipid synthesis related-genes, the decreased expression of lipidolysis-related genes, and the increased expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress biomarkers (PERK, IRE1, ATF6, GRP78). The dietary supplementation of four Se sources exhibited similar protective effects. Four Se sources increased liver Se concentration and promoted the expression of selenotranscriptome and several key selenoproteins, enhanced liver antioxidant capacity and alleviated HS-induced ER stress, and thus resisted the hepatic lipid metabolism disorders of broilers exposed to HS. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of four Se sources (0.3 mg/kg) exhibited similar protective effects on HS-induced hepatic lipid metabolism disorders of broilers, and the protective effect is connected to the relieving of ER stress.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether herbal cake-separated moxibustion can activate nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) / antioxidant responsive element (ARE) /hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) signaling pathway to repair aspirin induced gastric mucosal injury (GMI) in rats. METHODS: SD rats (half male and half female) were randomly divided into blank control, model, moxibustion, inhibitor of HO-1 (inhibitor), model+inhibitor, moxibustion + inhibitor groups, with 20 rats in each group. The GMI model was established by gavage of aspirin 150 mg/kg(1 mL/100 g). Herbal cake-separated moxibustion was alternatively applied to bilateral "Zusanli" (ST36) and "Zhongwan" (CV12) and bilateral "Pishu" (BL20) and "Weishu" (BL21) for 30 min, once daily for 8 days. The rats in the three inhibitor groups received intraperitoneal injection of HO-1 inhibitor zinc protoporphyrin (5 mg/kg). The rats' behavior score, emotional response score, skin hair score, diet score and stool state score were given. The GMI index was calculated according to Guth's methods. Histopathological changes of gastric mucosa were observed by H.E. staining. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the gastric mucosal tissue and serum were detected by ELISA. The levels of Nrf2/ARE/HO-1 signaling pathway-related factors Keap1, Nrf2, HO-1, CAT, GST, and NQO1 in the gastric mucosal tissue were detected by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot, separately. RESULTS: Compared with the blank control group, the behavior score, emotional response score, skin hair score, diet score and stool state score, GMI index, MDA contents of gastric mucosal tissue and serum, expression le-vels of Keap1 mRNA and protein were significantly increased (P<0.01), while the activity of gastric mucosal and serum SOD, the expression levels of Nrf2, HO-1, CAT, GST and NQO1 mRNAs and proteins were considerably decreased (P<0.01) in the model group. Compared with the model group, moxibustion obviously reversed the increase of emotional response score, skin hair score, stool state score, GMI index, MDA levels of gastric mucosal tissue and serum, and expression levels of Keap1 mRNA and protein (P<0.01, P<0.05), and the decrease of activity of SOD of gastric mucosal and serum, and the expression levels of Nrf2, HO-1, CAT, GST and NQO1 mRNAs and proteins (P<0.01, P<0.05). After administration of antagonist of HO-1, the effects of moxibustion were eliminated or weakened pronouncedly in reducing skin hair score, GMI index, contents of gastric mucosal and serum MDA, and expression of Keap1 mRNA and protein, and in up-regulating gastric mucosal and serum SOD, and expression of HO-1, CAT, GST and NQO1 mRNAs and proteins (P<0.01, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Herbal-cake separated moxibustion can improve the GMI in rats, which may be associated with its effects in reducing oxidative stress and activating Nrf2/ARE/HO-1 signaling pathway.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of compound organic acid (COA) and chlortetracycline (CTC) on serum biochemical parameters, intestinal health, and growth performance of weaned piglets. Twenty-four piglets (24 d of age) were randomly allocated into three treatments with eight replicate pens (one piglet per pen). Feed the basal diet or a diet containing 3,000 mg/kg COA or 75 mg/kg CTC, respectively. Results showed that both COA and CTC significantly increased average daily gain and reduced diarrhea rates (P < 0.05). They also upregulated serum total antioxidant capacity and downregulated serum interleukin (IL-10) levels (P < 0.05), increased crude protein digestibility and propionic acid concentration in the colon, and decreased spermidine and putrescine contents (P < 0.05). Intestinal microbiota analysis revealed that both COA and CTC increased the Shannon and Chao1 index and decreased the relative abundance of Blautia and Roseburia, but increased the relative abundance of Clostridium-sensu-stricto-1. Correlation analysis indicated that Clostridium-sensu-stricto-1 may be closely related to inflammation levels and microbial metabolites in piglets. Based on the results, COA may be a potential substitute for CTC to reduce antibiotic use and biogenic amine emission while improving piglet growth and intestinal health.


Weaned piglets face challenges due to their underdeveloped digestive system, resulting in high gastrointestinal tract pH and insufficient enzyme secretion. To address this issue, we found supplementing piglet diets with 3,000 mg/kg of compound organic acid positively impacted the immune and antioxidant levels of piglets, promoted their intestinal health, improved nutrient digestibility, and enhanced their overall growth performance. These benefits were attributed to the regulation of intestinal microbiota by the compound organic acid. By improving piglet health and growth, this research offers a potential solution to the challenges of piglet weaning stress.

About 10 major crops basically feed the world. In fact, there are still a large number of plants that have not been fully explored and utilized because they have been ignored by the market and research. The expansion of food sources in various countries plays an important role in maintaining food security and nutrition security in the world. Miwu is the aerial part of the medicinal plant Rhizoma Chuanxiong belonging to a traditional local characteristic food raw material. Its edible value is still little known. Through textual research, component determination, literature survey, field research, and SWOT analysis, this paper has a comprehensive understanding of Miwu's diet history, chemical components, safety risks, and industrial development status. It is found that Miwu has been eaten for 800 years, is rich in nutrients and active ingredients, and has no acute toxicity. In addition, the current industrial development of Miwu has significant advantages and many challenges. To sum up, Miwu is a potentially underutilized food raw material. This paper also provides countermeasures for the industrialized development of Miwu, which will provide a milestone reference for the future utilization and development of Miwu.

Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (ginseng), a traditional Chinese herb, is usually used to improve health and increase anti-aging activity for human. Polysaccharides are bioactive components of ginseng. Herein, using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model, we discovered a ginseng-derived rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I) pectin WGPA-1-RG promoted longevity via TOR signalling pathway with transcription factors FOXO/DAF-16 and Nrf2/SKN-1 accumulated in the nucleus, where they activated target genes. And the WGPA-1-RG-mediated lifespan extension was dependent on endocytosis, rather than a bacterial metabolic process. Glycosidic linkage analyses combined with arabinose- and galactose-releasing enzyme hydrolyses identified the RG-I backbone of WGPA-1-RG was primarily substituted with α-1,5-linked arabinan, ß-1,4-linked galactan and arabinogalactan II (AG-II) side chains. Feeding worms with the WGPA-1-RG-derived fractions which lost distinct structural elements by enzymatic digestions, we found the arabinan side chains prominently contributed to the longevity-promoting activity of WGPA-1-RG. These findings provide a novel ginseng-derived nutrient that potentially increases human longevity.

Corn silk (Stigma maydis), being the styles and stigmas of maize, is a famous traditional medicine and functional tea in China. Research into the chemical composition of corn silk led to the identification of an unreported flavone (1, silkone A), accompanying with three known flavonoids (2-4). And their structures were elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis. Each obtained compound was evaluated for antioxidant capacity by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays. As a result, all tested compounds exhibited stronger radicals scavenging activities than Trolox in ABTS radical assay and displayed relatively weak antioxidant capacity in the other two experiments. Tyrosinase inhibitory activities of compounds 1-4 were also investigated, and compounds 3 and 4 demonstrated moderate inhibitory activities to tyrosinase with IC50 values of 0.49 and 0.21 mM, respectively, which was further investigated through molecular docking calculation. These results may contribute to the development of novel antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors from corn silk.

To explore the diagnostic value of the Prostate Imaging−Reporting and Data System version 2.1 (PI-RADS v2.1) for clinically significant prostate cancer (CSPCa) in patients with a history of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), we conducted a retrospective study of 102 patients who underwent systematic prostate biopsies with TURP history. ROC analyses and logistic regression analyses were performed to demonstrate the diagnostic value of PI-RADS v2.1 and other clinical characteristics, including PSA and free/total PSA (F/T PSA). Of 102 patients, 43 were diagnosed with CSPCa. In ROC analysis, PSA, F/T PSA, and PI-RADS v2.1 demonstrated significant diagnostic value in detecting CSPCa in our cohort (AUC 0.710 (95%CI 0.608−0.812), AUC 0.768 (95%CI 0.676−0.860), AUC 0.777 (95%CI 0.688−0.867), respectively). Further, PI-RADS v2.1 scores of the peripheral and transitional zones were analyzed separately. In ROC analysis, PI-RADS v2.1 remained valuable in identifying peripheral-zone CSPCa (AUC 0.780 (95%CI 0.665−0.854; p < 0.001)) while having limited capability in distinguishing transitional zone lesions (AUC 0.533 (95%CI 0.410−0.557; p = 0.594)). PSA and F/T PSA retain significant diagnostic value for CSPCa in patients with TURP history. PI-RADS v2.1 is reliable for detecting peripheral-zone CSPCa but has limited diagnostic value when assessing transitional zone lesions.

BACKGROUND: Given the challenges on diabetic nephropathy (DN) treatment, research has been carried out progressively focusing on dietary nutrition and natural products as a novel option with the objective of enhancing curative effect and avoiding adverse reactions. As a representative, Quercetin (Qu) has proved to be of great value in current data. PURPOSE: We aimed to synthetize the evidence regarding the therapeutic effect and specific mechanism of quercetin on DN via systematically reviewing and performing meta-analysis. METHODS: Preclinical literature published prior to August 2021, was systematical retrieval and manually filtrated across four major databases including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and Cochrane library. Pooled overall effect sizes of results were generated by STATA 16.0, and underlying mechanisms were summarized. Three-dimensional dose/time-effect analyses and radar maps were conducted to examine the dosage/time-response relations between Qu and DN. RESULTS: This paper pools all current available evidence in a comprehensive way, and shows the therapeutic benefits as well as potential action mechanisms of Qu in protecting the kidney against damage. A total of 304 potentially relevant citations were identified, of which 18 studies were enrolled into analysis. Methodological quality was calculated, resulting in an average score of 7.06/10. This paper provided the preliminary evidence that consumption of Qu could induce a statistical reduction in mesangial index, Scr, BUN, 24-h urinary protein, serum urea, BG, kidney index, TC, TG, LDL-C, AST, MDA, AGE, TNF-α, TGF-ß1, TGF-ß1 mRNA, CTGF and IL-1ß, whereas HDL-C, SOD, GSH, GSH-Px, CAT and smad-7 were significantly increased. Furthermore, Qu could remarkably improve the renal pathology. In terms of the mechanisms underlying therapy of DN, Qu exerts anti-diabetic nephropathy properties possibly through PI3K/PKB, AMPK-P38 MAPK, SCAP/SREBP2/LDLr, mtROS-TRX/TXNIP/NLRP3/IL-1ß, TGF-ß1/Smad, Nrf2/HO-1, Hippo, mTORC1/p70S6K and SHH pathways. Dose/time-response images predicted a modest association between Qu dosage consumption/administration length and therapeutic efficacy, with the optimal dosage at 90-150 mg/kg/d and administration length ranging from 8 weeks to 12 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Quercetin exhibit highly pleiotropic actions, which simultaneously contributes to prevent fundamental progression of DN, such as hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, inflammation, fibrotic lesions and oxidative stress. The therapeutic effect becomes stronger when Qu administration at higher dosages lasts for longer durations. Taken together, quercetin could be used in patients with DN as a promising agent, which has well-established safety profiles and nontoxicity according to existing literature.

Increasing microplastics (MPs) pollution in estuaries profoundly impacts microbial ecosystems and biogeochemical processes. Nitrous oxide (N2O), a powerful greenhouse gas, is an important intermediate product of microbial nitrogen cycling. However, how MPs regulate N2O production and its pathways remain poorly understood. Here, impacts of traditional petroleum-based and emerging biodegradable MPs on microbial N2O production and its pathways were studied through dual-isotope (15N-18O) labeling technique and molecular methods. Results indicated that both traditional petroleum-based and emerging biodegradable MPs promoted sedimentary N2O production, whereas pathways varied. Biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) MPs displayed greater promotion of N2O production than petroleum-based MPs, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE), of which PLA promoted through nitrifier nitrification (NN) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD), PE through nitrifier denitrification and HD, and PVC through NN. By combining the analysis of N2O production rates with sediment chemical and microbiological properties, we demonstrated that the enrichment of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, as well as related functional genes directly and/or indirectly increased N2O production primarily by interacting with carbon and nitrogen substrates. Different response of nitrogen cycling microbes to MPs led to the difference in N2O increase pathways, of which nitrifying bacteria significantly enriched in all MPs treatments due to the niches provided by MPs. However, part of denitrifying bacteria significantly enriched in treatments containing PLA and PE MPs, which may serve as organic carbon substrates. This work highlights that the presence of MPs can promote sedimentary N2O production, and the emerging biodegradable MPs represented by PLA may have a greater potential to enhance estuarine N2O emissions and accelerate global climate change.

Textile-based electronics hold great promise because they can endow wearable devices with soft and comfortable characteristics. However, the inherent porosity and fluffiness of fabrics result in high surface roughness, which presents great challenges in the manufacture of high-performance fabric electrodes. In this work, we propose a thermal transfer printing method to address the above challenges, in which electrodes or circuits of silver flake/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites are prefabricated on a release film by coating and laser engraving and then laminated by hot-pressing to a variety of fabrics and textiles. This universal and scalable production technique enables fabric electrodes to be made without compromising the original wearability, washability, and stretchability of textiles. The prepared fabric electrodes exhibit high conductivity (5.48 × 104 S/cm), high adhesion (≥1750 N/m), good abrasion/washing resistance, high patterning resolution (∼40 µm), and good electromechanical performance up to 50% strain. To demonstrate the potential applications, we developed textile-based radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for remote identification and a large-sized heater for wearable thermotherapy. More importantly, the solvent-free thermal transfer printing technology developed in this paper enables people to DIY interesting flexible electronics on clothes with daily tools, which can promote the commercial application of smart textile-based electronics.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a commonly occurring and recurrent mental disorder cross the world. Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise which could be used to treat mental disorders including depression. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the efficiency of Tai Chi for patients with depression. METHODS: This protocol follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol statement. Literature will be searched at PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China Biology Medicine Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Technology Journal Database, and Wan Fang database from the start date to September 2021. The Review Manager 5.3 software will be used to manage literature. After literature screening, 2 reviewers will extract data from the respects of general information, methodology, and results. The data analysis will be conducted with Review Manager and Stata 16 software, and the publication bias and literature quality will be both evaluated. RESULTS: The results will contain the evaluation of clinical efficacy of Tai Chi practice for depression, as well as the assessment of literature quality and publication bias.
