In recent years, the discharge of major pollutants in China's wastewater has been decreasing but remains at a high level. Controlling the discharge of pollutants in sewage is of great importance for protecting water quality and maintaining ecological balance. Based on data collected from 31 provinces in China from 2011 to 2020 (except 2018), this study analyzes the spatiotemporal variation emissions of the wastewater pollutants: chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP). The entropy method was used to evaluate the effectiveness of water pollution control in different provinces. Our results revealed that the total emission per gross domestic product (GDP) for COD, NH3-N, TN and TP in China decreased by 50.7%, 81.9%, 65.4% and 70.8%, respectively. In terms of regional annual emission differences, the Northwest region was the lowest compared with other regions, accounting for 4.87%-6.59% of the national pollutant emissions, and the Central China region was the highest, accounting for 22.4%-26.05% of the national pollutant emissions. The average value of pollutant emissions per unit of GDP decreased year-to-year overall, but Guangxi and Tibet showed a trend of first decreasing and then increasing. The correlation results indicated a significant correlation (0.977) between TN and TP emissions in wastewater in China during 2011-2020. Through clustering and Multidimensional Scaling model (MDS) analysis, Beijing and Shanghai have been performing well in controlling water pollution discharge, while the provinces of Tibet and Guangxi must still increase their efforts in water pollution control. Furthermore, these results demonstrate the experience and achievements of the Chinese government in the treatment of wastewater pollution and provide a useful reference for treatment of wastewater pollution in the world.

OBJECTIVE: Using bipolar disorder (BD) as a control, we explored the possible developmental process of impaired glucose metabolism rhythm. METHODS: In total, 441 subjects (77, 162, 134, 54, and 14 in the pre-diabetes [pre-DM], DM, BD, BD + pre-DM, and BD + DM groups, respectively) and 160 controls were included. All subjects were assessed using the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes were measured. RESULTS: Cluster analysis showed that the BD, BD + DM, and DM groups were classified as the 'disease group, the BD + pre-DM group as the 'mixed period group', and the pre-DM group as the 'pre-disease group'. The conscientiousness factor scores of the NEO-FFI in the 'disease group' were higher than the norm but lower than the norm in the 'pre-disease group'. The scores of neurotic factors in the 'pre-disease' and 'mixed period' groups were both significantly higher than that in the 'disease group' (corrected p < 0.001). The incidences of the abnormal HPA axis decreased gradually from the 'pre-disease group' to the 'mixed period group' then to the 'disease group', while those of the HPT axis slightly increased at first and then significantly decreased. The overall prediction rate of the multiple logistic regression model was 92.7%. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that progression of pre-diabetes to DM is a continuous process from local abnormalities to rhythm disorder of glucose metabolism. This understanding can be applied to the whole course management and early intervention of DM and to the future development of optimised treatment based on rhythm regulation. The selective BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib is one of the first-line therapies in the management of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). However, acquired resistance to this inhibitor, which is especially conferred by the T315I point mutation in BCR-ABL, impedes the efficacy of imatinib therapy. Therefore, the discovery and development of novel agents to overcome imatinib resistance is urgently needed. Pseudolaric acid B (PAB), a small molecule isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine Cortex pseudolaricis, has been reported to be a potential candidate for immune disorders and cancer treatment. However, its effects on CML and the involved molecular mechanism have not been reported. In the current study, by performing both in vitro and in vivo experiments in CML cells, we showed that PAB blocked the cell cycle at G2/M phase and subsequently activated the caspase pathway, cleaved the BCR-ABL protein and inhibited the BCR-ABL downstream pathways, ultimately leading to cell proliferation inhibition, cytotoxicity and apoptosis. These events were observed in both imatinib-sensitive and imatinib-insensitive CML cell lines. Moreover, PAB decreased the viability of primary blood mononuclear cells from CML patients and induced apoptosis in these cells. Our findings suggest that PAB could be used as a novel agent to sensitize imatinib-resistant CML.

Objective: To evaluate patients with stable COPD for the presence of potentially pathogenic microorganisms (PPM), systemic inflammation and the effects of short-term antibiotic therapy in PPM positive patients. Methods: From January 2016 to June 2017, we enrolled 96 stable COPD patients. Bacterial cultures from sputum collections were quantitated, along with markers for systemic inflammation including serum C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and plasma fibrinogen (FIB) in all patients. All enrolled patients were followed for 12 months. Forty patients were identified as PPM positive and were randomly divided into an antibiotic group and a control group. The antibiotic group was treated with moxifloxacin orally for 6 days. Lung function and markers for systemic inflammation were repeatedly measured at 30 days and 6 months in PPM positive subjects. Results: Binary logistic regression analysis showed that risk factors for PPM positive are bronchiectasis (OR 4.18, 95% CI 1.20-14.59; P=0.025), COPD assessment test (CAT) ≥20 (OR 17.55, 95% CI 2.82-109.18; P=0.002), spontaneous sputum (OR 15.09, 95% CI 1.36-168.02; P=0.027) and sputum purulence (OR 38.43, 95% CI 5.39-274.21; P=0.000). CRP and IL-8 were higher in PPM positive group than those in PPM negative group (P=0.001, P=0.007, respectively), but there were no differences of FIB between the two groups (P=0.086). Compared to the PPM negative group, the rate of acute exacerbation of COPD was higher (P=0.029) and time to next acute exacerbation was shorter (P=0.030) in PPM positive group. There were no differences in lung function and systemic inflammatory markers either in the control group or the antibiotic group at different time points of follow-up. Conclusion: PPM exists in stable COPD patients and can cause systemic inflammation and is associated with acute exacerbation of COPD. Short-term antibiotic therapy had no effect on systemic inflammation nor on acute exacerbation of COPD.China Clinical Trials Registry: ChiCTR-IOR-15006769.

KEY MESSAGE: Phosphorus deficiency in soil is a worldwide constraint threatening maize production. Through a genome-wide association study, we identified molecular markers and associated candidate genes and molecular pathways for low-phosphorus stress tolerance. Phosphorus deficiency in soils will severely affect maize (Zea mays L.) growth and development, thus decreasing the final yield. Deciphering the genetic basis of yield-related traits can benefit our understanding of maize tolerance to low-phosphorus stress. However, considering that yield-related traits should be evaluated under field condition with large populations rather than under hydroponic condition at a single-plant level, searching for appropriate field experimental sites and target traits for low-phosphorus stress tolerance is still very challenging. In this study, a genome-wide association analysis using two natural populations was performed to detect candidate genes in response to low-phosphorus stress at two experimental sites representative of different climate and soil types. In total, 259 candidate genes were identified and these candidate genes are mainly involved in four major pathways: transcriptional regulation, reactive oxygen scavenging, hormone regulation, and remodeling of cell wall. Among these candidate genes, 98 showed differential expression by transcriptome data. Based on a haplotype analysis of grain number under phosphorus deficiency condition, the positive haplotypes with favorable alleles across five loci increased grain number by 42% than those without favorable alleles. For further verifying the feasibility of genomic selection for improving maize low-phosphorus tolerance, we also validated the predictive ability of five genomic selection methods and suggested that moderate-density SNPs were sufficient to make accurate predictions for low-phosphorus tolerance traits. All these results will facilitate elucidating genetic basis of maize tolerance to low-phosphorus stress and improving marker-assisted selection efficiency in breeding process.

Low-phosphorus (LP) stress is a global problem for maize production and has been exacerbated by breeding activities that have reduced the genetic diversity of maize. Although LP tolerance in maize has been previously evaluated, the evaluations were generally performed with only a small number of accessions or with samples collected from a limited area. In this research, 826 maize accessions (including 580 tropical/subtropical accessions and 246 temperate accessions) were evaluated for LP tolerance under field conditions in 2011 and 2012. Plant height (PH) and leaf number were measured at three growth stages. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and fresh ear weight (FEW) were also measured. Genetic correlation analysis revealed that FEW and NDVI were strongly correlated with PH, especially at later stages. LP-tolerant and -sensitive accessions were selected based on the relative trait values of all traits using principal component analysis, and all the 14 traits of the tolerant maize accessions showed less reduction than the sensitive accessions under LP conditions. LP tolerance was strongly correlated with agronomic performance under LP stress conditions, and both criteria could be used for genetic analysis and breeding of LP tolerance. Temperate accessions showed slightly better LP tolerance than tropical/subtropical ones, although more tolerant accessions were identified from tropical/subtropical accessions, which could be contributed by their larger sample size. This large-scale evaluation provides useful information, LP-tolerant germplasm resources and evaluation protocol for genetic analysis and developing maize varieties for LP tolerance.
