RESUMO

Postoperative delirium is a common postoperative complication of neurocognitive dysfunction, especially in elderly surgical patients. Postoperative delirium not only damages patients' recovery but also increases social costs. Therefore, its prevention and treatment has essential clinical and social significance. However, due to its intricate pathogenesis and limited pharmacological interventions, the effective prevention and treatment of postoperative delirium remains a thorny problem. As traditional acupuncture therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment in many neurological disorders, and in recent years, it has begun to be clinically used as an intervention for postoperative delirium. Although most clinical and animal studies confirm that multiple types of acupuncture interventions can alleviate or prevent postoperative delirium by relieving acute postoperative pain, reducing the consumption of anesthetics and analgesics, attenuating neuroinflammation and neuronal lesions, while more evidence-based medical evidence and clinical validation are needed for these encouraging effects.

BACKGROUND: Destruction of articular cartilage and bone is the main cause of joint dysfunction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a) is a key molecule that mediates the destruction of RA articular cartilage. Estrogen has been proven to have a protective effect against articular cartilage damage, however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: We treated rat articular chondrocytes with an acidic environment, analyzed the expression levels of mitochondrial stress protein HSP10, ClpP, LONP1 by q-PCR and immunofluorescence staining. Transmission electron microscopy was used to analyze the mitochondrial morphological changes. Laser confocal microscopy was used to analyze the Ca2+, mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. Moreover, ASIC1a specific inhibitor Psalmotoxin 1 (Pctx-1) and Ethylene Glycol Tetraacetic Acid (EGTA) were used to observe whether acid stimulation damage mitochondrial function through Ca2+ influx mediated by ASIC1a and whether pretreatment with estrogen could counteract these phenomena. Furthermore, the ovariectomized (OVX) adjuvant arthritis (AA) rat model was treated with estrogen to explore the effect of estrogen on disease progression. RESULTS: Our results indicated that HSP10, ClpP, LONP1 protein and mRNA expression and mitochondrial ROS level were elevated in acid-stimulated chondrocytes. Moreover, acid stimulation decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and damaged mitochondrial structure of chondrocytes. Furthermore, ASIC1a specific inhibitor PcTx-1 and EGTA inhibited acid-induced mitochondrial abnormalities. In addition, estrogen could protect acid-stimulated induced mitochondrial stress by regulating the activity of ASIC1a in rat chondrocytes and protects cartilage damage in OVX AA rat. CONCLUSIONS: Extracellular acidification induces mitochondrial stress by activating ASIC1a, leading to the damage of rat articular chondrocytes. Estrogen antagonizes acidosis-induced joint damage by inhibiting ASIC1a activity. Our study provides new insights into the protective effect and mechanism of action of estrogen in RA.

CONTEXT: The traditional Chinese medicine formula Tao-Hong-Si-Wu decoction (TSD), used for treating ischaemic stroke, has the potential to treat depressive disorder (DD). OBJECTIVE: To explore the effective targets of TSD on DD animal models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were modelled by inducing chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) during 35 days and treated with three dosages of TSD (2.5, 5 and 10 g/kg) or fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) by oral gavage for 14 days. Bodyweight measurements and behavioural tests were performed to observe the effect of TSD on the CUMS animals. A gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS)-based metabolomic analysis was conducted to reveal the metabolic characteristics related to the curative effect of TSD. Levels of the proteins associated with the feature metabolites were analysed. RESULTS: Reduced immobile duration and crossed squares in the behavioural tests were raised by 48.6% and 32.9%, on average, respectively, by TSD treatment (ED50=3.2 g/kg). Antidepressant effects of TSD were associated with 13 decreased metabolites and the restorations of ornithine and urea in the serum. TSD (5 g/kg) raised serum serotonin by 54.1 mg/dL but suppressed arginase I (Arg I) by 47.8 mg/dL in the CUMS rats. Proteins on the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) axis that modulate the inhibition of Arg I were suppressed in the CUMS rats but reversed by the TSD intervention. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: TSD improves depression-like symptoms in CUMS rats. Further study will focus on the antidepressant-like effects of effective compounds contained in TSD.

Identifying sediment phosphorus sources in river-lake coupled system is a question in developing preferential control strategies for phosphorus. As sediments adsorbed phosphorus and microbes would be transported with changing hydrodynamic, the phosphorus source-specific microbial community fingerprints shed light on determining the major sediment phosphorus sources. However, the identification of microbial community fingerprints is a challenge because both microbial succession and hydrological characteristics of river-lake systems would affect the stability of fingerprints. Therefore, this study provided a framework for optimizing phosphorus source-specific microbial community fingerprints, and attempted to identify the major sources of sediment phosphorus in river-lake coupled ecosystem. Meiliang Lake is one of the highly eutrophic area in Taihu Lake, where the sediments, bacterial communities, and phosphorus had a close relationship. Through analyzing the connectivity of microbes along water continuum, a microbial fingerprints candidate database was constructed. The phosphorus-related bacterial communities were screened and optimized by comparing the difference of predicted results between upstream and downstream, forming the stable microbial community fingerprints which consisted of Bacteroidia, Bacilli, Clostridia, and other species at the class level. SourceTracker results that based on the optimized phosphorus source-specific microbial community fingerprints indicated that the major sediment phosphorus sources to Meiliang Lake were Liangxi River, Wujingang River, and Donghuandi River, with the relative standard deviations ranging from 2.59% to 27.56%. The accuracy of phosphorus source apportionments was further confirmed based on the composite pollution index and hydrodynamic condition. This study put forward suggestions on how to improve the stability of microbial community fingerprints, and would help to improve the understanding of applying microbial source tracking method to identify the sources of abiotic pollution like sediment phosphorus.

The outbreak and rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses a huge threat to human health and social stability. Shufeng Jiedu capsule (SFJDC), a patented herbal drug composed of eight medicinal plants, is used to treat different viral respiratory tract infectious diseases. Based on its antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immunoregulatory activities in acute lung injury, SFJDC can be effectively used as a treatment for COVID-19 patients according to the diagnosis and treatment plan issued in China and existing clinical data. SFJDC has been recommended in 15 therapeutic regimens for COVID-19 in China. This review summarizes current data on the ingredients, chemical composition, pharmacological properties, clinical efficacy, and potential therapeutic effect of SFJDC on COVID-19, to provide a theoretical basis for its anti-viral mechanism and the clinical treatment of COVID-19.

Phosphorus, one of the primary limiting factors for eutrophication, plays a crucial role in the ecology health of aquatic ecosystems. However, understanding phosphorus bioavailability and source contributions in contaminated lake sediments which could help develop effective eutrophication management plans is limited largely due to the lack of appropriate methods in large catchments with a complex arrangement of sources. Based on the significant relationships between sediment, phosphorus and microbial community, source-specific microbial community fingerprints formed by machine-learning classification SourceTracker might shed light on determining dominant phosphorus sources in the river-lake systems in the era of high-throughput sequencing. This study was conducted in Dongting Lake that suffered accelerated eutrophication due to considerable phosphorus input from the inflow-rivers. The results of phosphorus fractionation according to the Standards, Measurements and Testing harmonized procedure indicated that sediments in the central lake had a higher concentration of non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (Mann-Whitney U test), which deserves greater attention on the risk of phosphorus release. The significant relationships between phosphorus fractionations, sediment and bacterial community were established with the spearman correlation and network analysis. SourceTracker analysis indicated that the major inflow-rivers of phosphorus sources to Dongting Lake were the Songzi, Miluo, and Xinqiang Rivers. The effects of sediment diffusion distance on phosphorus source apportionment were further confirmed. Taken together, our results contribute to an improved understanding of phosphorus fractionations and source contributions in the river-lake systems and its potential impact to eutrophication management plans.

Controlling wastewater pollution from centralized industrial zones is important for reducing overall water pollution. Microbial community structure and diversity can adversely affect wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) performance and stability. Therefore, we studied microbial structure, diversity, and metabolic functions in WWTPs that treat industrial or municipal wastewater. Sludge microbial community diversity and richness were the lowest for the industrial WWTPs, indicating that industrial influents inhibited bacterial growth. The sludge of industrial WWTP had low Nitrospira populations, indicating that influent composition affected nitrification and denitrification. The sludge of industrial WWTPs had high metabolic functions associated with xenobiotic and amino acid metabolism. Furthermore, bacterial richness was positively correlated with conventional pollutants (e.g., carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus), but negatively correlated with total dissolved solids. This study was expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of activated sludge microbial communities in full-scale industrial and municipal WWTPs.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of baicalin on myocardial infarction in rats and explore the related mechanisms. METHODS: Fifty Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into the control, model, and low-, medium- and high-dose baicalin groups. The latter 3 groups were intraperitoneally injected with baicalin, with a dose of 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg, respectively. Then, the myocardial infarction model was established. The hemodynamic of rats was tested, the serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), prostacyclin (PGI2) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) were determined, the myocardial superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were detected, and the myocardial B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-2 associated X (Bax) protein expressions were determined. RESULTS: Compared with the model group, in the high-dose baicalin group the ST segment height and LVEDP were significantly decreased (P<0.05), the LVSP was significantly increased (P<0.05), the serum LDH, CK-MB and TXA2 levels were significantly decreased (P<0.05), the PGI2 level was significantly increased (P<0.05), the myocardial SOD level was significantly increased (P<0.05), and the myocardial MDA level was significantly decreased (P<0.05); the myocardial Bcl-2 protein level was significantly increased, and the Bax protein level was significantly decreased (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Baicalin has protective effects on myocardial infarction in rats. The possible mechanisms may be related to its resistance to oxidative stress, and up-regulation of Bcl-2 protein expression and down-regulation of Bax protein expression in myocardial tissue.

Waterborne pathogens, especially bacteria and viruses, pose significant health risks to the public, calling for the development of a sustainable, efficient, and robust disinfection strategy with reduced energy footprint and minimized byproduct formation. Here, we developed a sustainable photocatalytic composite for antimicrobial applications by integrating visible-light-responsive graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with low-density porous expanded perlite (EP) mineral, and g-C3N4/EP-520 showed a high specific surface area of 45.3 m2/g and optimum performance for disinfection. g-C3N4/EP-520 achieved 8-log inactivation of E. coli and MS2 under 180 and 240 min visible-light irradiation without stirring, respectively. Water quality parameters were found to influence the disinfection performance of g-C3N4/EP-520: MS2 inactivation was promoted with the increase of dissolved oxygen (DO), proton concentration, salinity (NaCl), and hardness (Ca2+). Importantly, g-C3N4/EP-520 could fully inactivate MS2 in a real source water sample with prolonged light irradiation, and negligible activity loss was observed in recycle use, demonstrating its viability and robustness for waterborne pathogen removal. Antimicrobial mechanisms of g-C3N4/EP-520 were systemically evaluated by radical scavenger addition, and revealed that the inactivation behavior was dependent on the type of microorganisms. Microscopic analyses confirmed that the destruction of bacterial cells and viral particles, leading to the inactivation of microorganisms.

Mechanical harvest of massive harmful algal blooms is an effective measure for bloom mitigation. Yet subsequent processing of the resulting water from algae water separation after the harvesting becomes a new problem since individual algal cells or small algal aggregates are still present in the water. Here, we proposed a novel approach for effectively flocculating the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa with a removal efficiency of 97% in 6 h using hydrolyzed urine. Nitrogen and phosphorus were simultaneously reclaimed through struvite formation. The addition of Mg2+ promoted the flocculation efficiency and nutrient removal as well as the yield of struvite. Ca2+ could enhance the flocculation efficiency by forming calcium phosphate. During the flocculation process, no significant damage in algal cells was observed. This study provides a novel and sustainable potential for subsequent processing of the resulting water after algae water separation with simultaneous nutrient precipitation and reducing nutrient loads to wastewater treatment plants.

Pretreatment of feed water is widely applied to mitigate NOM-induced fouling of low-pressure membranes. This research investigated the effectiveness of two pretreatment modes for NOM removal by heated aluminum oxide particles (HAOPs) and the associated reductions in membrane fouling and trihalomethane (THM) formation potential. One mode, referred to here as pre-adsorption, is the conventional process in which adsorbent particles are added to and thoroughly mixed with the feed, after which the particles are separated from the water either upstream of or by the membrane. By contrast, in the pre-deposition mode, a thin layer of adsorbent particles is deposited on a support media (which could be the membrane) prior to passing feed through the layer and the membrane. Although both pretreatment methods remove similar amounts of DOC at the same adsorbent dose, pre-deposition is superior with respect to mitigating membrane fouling and reducing DBP formation. UV and fluorescence spectroscopy and HPSEC analysis indicate that a pre-deposited adsorbent layer removes more chromophores and low apparent molecular weight (AMW) material than pre-adsorption does. Based on absorbance ratios at selected wavelengths, a pre-deposited HAOPs layer removes more aromatic moieties than aliphatic carboxyls, especially at higher HAOPs doses. In addition, pre-deposition is more effective than pre-adsorption at reducing the THM formation potential. The results provide new insights into the interactions between HAOPs and NOM molecules and shed light on the significantly different effects of different adsorbent contacting modes on the fouling potential of the pretreated water.

OBJECTIVE: The results from observation studies on the relationship between coffee intake and risk of depression and the relationship between caffeine consumption and depression remain controversial. We conducted a meta-analysis with a dose-response analysis to quantitatively summarize the evidence about the association between coffee and caffeine intakes and risk of depression. METHOD: Relevant articles were identified by researching PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and WANFANG DATA in English or Chinese from 1 January 1980 to 1 May 2015. Case-control, cohort or cross-sectional studies evaluating coffee or caffeine consumption and depression were included. A random-effects model was used to combine study-specific relative risk and 95% confidence interval. Dose-response relationship was assessed by restricted cubic spline functions. RESULTS: Data were obtained from 11 observation articles; 330,677 participants from seven studies in seven articles were included in the coffee-depression analysis, while 38,223 participants from eight studies in seven articles were involved in the caffeine-depression analysis. Compared with the lowest level consumption, the pooled relative risk (95% confidence interval) for coffee-depression and caffeine-depression was 0.757 [0.624, 0.917] and 0.721 [0.522, 0.997], respectively. For dose-response analysis, evidence of a linear association was found between coffee consumption and depression, and the risk of depression decreased by 8% (relative risk = 0.92, 95% confidence interval = [0.87, 0.97], p = 0.002) for each cup/day increment in coffee intake; a nonlinear association was found between caffeine consumption and depression, the risk of depression decreased faster and the association became significant when the caffeine consumption was above 68 mg/day and below 509 mg/day. CONCLUSIONS: Coffee and caffeine consumption were significantly associated with decreased risk of depression.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the vegetative tissues of Coleus forskohlii cultivated in Tongcheng, Hubei Province, and to provide useful information for its planting. METHODS: The root, stem, leaf and enlarged rhizome of Coleus forskohlii were subject to routine paraffin section and staining with safranin and fast green FCF solution before examination by light microscopy. RESULTS: The secondary tissue was well developed in root, and stem showed a higher percentage of cortex and pitch, and 4 large vascular bundles. Leaf epidermis was covered by lots of trichomes, including glandular hairs, glandular scale and linear non-glandular hairs. Mesophyll tissue was poorly differentiated to palisade and spongy tissues. Enlarged rhizome was the same as normal dicotyledons plants. CONCLUSION: Enlarged rhizome, unconspicuous root tuber and poorly differentiated leaf mesophyll cells are 3 main different features of Coleus forskohlii transplanted in Tongcheng. These results provide scientific basis for formulating quality standards, further cultivation and utilization of the plant.

To assess the environmental behavior and impact of graphene oxide (GO) on living organisms more accurately, the aggregation of GO and its deposition on Al2O3 particles were systematically investigated using batch experiments across a wide range of solution chemistries. The results indicated that the aggregation of GO and its deposition on Al2O3 depended on the solution pH and the types and concentrations of electrolytes. MgCl2 and CaCl2 destabilized GO because of their effective charge screening and neutralization, and the presence of NaH2PO4 and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) improved the stability of GO with the increase in pH values as a result of electrostatic interactions and steric repulsion. Specifically, the dissolution of Al2O3 contributed to GO aggregation at relatively low pH or high pH values. Results from this study provide critical information for predicting the fate of GO in aquatic-terrestrial transition zones, where aluminum (hydro)oxides are present.
