RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We developed a new Bakri balloon tamponade (BBT) placement technique after vaginal delivery, which aimed to be faster without balloon slippage. This study compared the new method with standard placement of BBT in women with postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) after vaginal delivery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was undertaken of women who underwent vaginal delivery at the obstetrics and gynecology departments of the Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Sichuan Provincial Hospital for Women and Children, and Si Chuan JINXIN Women and Children Hospital between January 2014 and December 2020. Women who underwent BBT for PPH were grouped according to placement method into the old-BBT group and the new-BBT group. RESULTS: Of 20487 childbirths by vaginal delivery, 512 (2.50%) had PPH, 77 women underwent BBT (old-BBT n = 28, new-BBT n = 49). Background characteristics were similar except prothrombin time (PT, p < 0.01) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT, p < 0.004) were lower in the new-BBT group than the old-BBT group. The operation time was shorter in the new-BBT group (p < 0.001) with less bleeding (p < 0.003) and saline injection (p < 0.001). A balloon slippage was less likely (p < 0.008) and postoperative bleeding (p < 0.01), transfusion rate (p < 0.03), transfusion volume (p < 0.002), and hospital stay was lower in the new-BBT group (p < 0.015). Multivariate analysis suggested PT (OR = 0.039, 95% CI: 0.002-0.730, p < 0.030), international normalized ratio (OR = 8.244, 95% CI: 3.807-17.850, p < 0.009), and BBT method (OR = 5.200, 95% CI: 1.745-15.493, p < 0.003), were associated with requiring a blood transfusion. CONCLUSIONS: This method of BBT placement reduced operation time, balloon slippage, bleeding, and hospital stay in women with PPH after vaginal delivery.

RESUMO

Lactobacilli are sensitive to heat, which limits their application as probiotics in livestock production. Lactobacillus rhamnosus LB1 was previously shown to reduce enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Salmonella infections in pigs. To investigate its potential in the application, the bacterium was microencapsulated and examined for its survival from feed pelleting and long-term storage as well as its function in modulating pig intestinal microbiota. The in vitro studies showed that freshly microencapsulated Lactobacillus rhamnosus LB1 had viable counts of 9.03 ± 0.049 log10 colony-forming units/g, of which only 0.06 and 0.87 Log of viable counts were reduced after storage at 4 and 22 °C for 427 d. The viable counts of encapsulated Lactobacillus rhamnosus LB1 were 1.06 and 1.54 Log higher in the pelleted and mash feed, respectively, than the non-encapsulated form stored at 22 °C for 30 d. In the in vivo studies, 80 piglets (weaned at 21 d of age) were allocated to five dietary treatments for a 10-d growth trial. The dietary treatments were the basal diet (CTL) and basal diet combined with either non-encapsulated LB1 (NEP), encapsulated LB1 (EP), bovine colostrum (BC), or a combination of encapsulated LB1 and bovine colostrum (EP-BC). The results demonstrated that weaning depressed feed intake and reduced growth rates in pigs of all the treatments during 21 to 25 d of age; however, the body weight gain was improved during 25 to 31 d of age in all groups with the numerically highest increase in the EP-BC-fed pigs during 21 to 31 d of age. Dietary treatments with EP, particularly in combination with BC, modulated pig intestinal microbiota, including an increase in Lactobacillus relative abundance. These results suggest that microencapsulation can protect Lactobacillus rhamnosus LB1 against cell damage from a high temperature during processing and storage and there are possible complementary effects between EP and BC.

Both in vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to verify if the microencapsulation method reported previously could preserve the viability of Lactobacillus rhamnosus LB1 after feed pelleting and long-term storage, and the probiotic functions of the bacterium either alone or in combination with bovine colostrum (BC) in the weaning transition phase of piglets. The results demonstrated that microencapsulation protected Lactobacillus rhamnosus LB1 against cell damage from a high temperature during processing and storage. Dietary treatments with encapsulated LB1, particularly in combination with BC, modulated pig intestinal microbiota, including an increase in Lactobacillus relative abundance during the weaning transition.

RESUMO

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is a well-known food and medicinal plant. Lotus seedpod (Receptaculum Nelumbinis) is the by-products during lotus products processing, which is considered as waste. Numerous studies have been conducted on its phytochemicals, biological activity and industrial application. However, the information on lotus seedpod is scattered and has been rarely summarized. In this review, summaries on preparation and identification of phytochemicals, the biological activities of extracts and phytochemicals, and applications of raw material, extracts and phytochemicals for lotus seedpod were made. Meanwhile, the future study trend was proposed. Recent evidence indicated that lotus seedpods extracts, obtained by non-organic and organic solvents, possessed several activities, which were influenced by extraction solvents and methods. Lotus seedpods were rich in phytochemicals categorized as different chemical groups, such as proanthocyanidins, oligomeric procyanidins, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, etc. These phytochemicals exhibited various bioactivities, including ameliorating cognitive impairment, antioxidation, antibacterial, anti-glycative, neuroprotection, anti-tyrosinase and other activities. Raw material, extracts and phytochemicals of lotus seedpods could be utilized as sources for biochar and biomass material, in food industry and as dye. This review gives well-understanding on lotus seedpod, and provides theoretical basis for its future research and application.

RESUMO

This study aimed at comparing the physicochemical characteristics, α-glucosidase inhibitory effect, and hypoglycemic activity of pectins (N-NOP and H-NOP) from peels of normal and Huanglongbing (HLB)-infected Navel oranges. Results indicated the pectins were high methoxy pectins mainly composed of homogalacturonan and rhamnogalacturonan-I. The pectins exhibited similar functional groups, surface morphology, and particle size, and had no triple-helical conformation in solution. They exerted fat and glucose absorption capacities and were mixed-type noncompetitive α-glucosidase inhibitors with IC50 values of 1.182 and 2.524 mg/ml, respectively. Both N-NOP and H-NOP showed hypoglycemic activity in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Administration of them could promote the synthesis of hepatic glycogen and/or serum insulin to lower blood glucose levels and enhance antioxidant status to alleviate oxidative stress injury in diabetic mice. Moreover, N-NOP had higher yield, molecular weight, ζ-potential, oil holding capacity, α-glucosidase inhibitory effect and in vivo hypoglycemic activity, whereas H-NOP possessed higher uronic acid, degree of esterification, thermal stability, water holding capacity, swelling capacity, and fat absorption capacity. It could be concluded that some similarities and differences existed between N-NOP and H-NOP in physicochemical characteristics, functional properties, α-glucosidase inhibitory effects, and hypoglycemic activity. This study provides references for the basic research and application of pectins from peels of normal and HLB-infected Navel oranges. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Pectin has been widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries for several decades due to its health benefit, gelling, thickening, and emulsification performances. Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide concern in recent years. Pectins (N-NOP and H-NOP) from peels of normal and Huanglongbing (HLB)-infected Navel oranges possessed in vitro and in vivo hypoglycemic activities, indicating they were potential anti-antidiabetic substitutes of chemical drugs. Moreover, comparative understanding on the physicochemical characteristic, α-glucosidase inhibitory effect and hypoglycemic activity of pectins from peels of normal and Huanglongbing-infected Navel oranges was conducive to the recycling and utilization of Navel orange peels. Recently, the biological activity of pectin from peels of normal Navel oranges has been rarely reported, and the information on pectin from peels of Huanglongbing-infected Navel orange is rare. This study provides references for the basic research and application of pectins from peels of normal and HLB-infected Navel oranges.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic headache (PTH) after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common clinical symptom, which refers to a headache that occurs after TBI. Acupuncture is often used for the treatment of such patients in China, and significant clinical effects have been achieved. However, to date, its efficacy has not been methodically evaluated. The purpose of this systematic review is to provide evidence to prove the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of PTH in patients with TBI. METHODS: This systematic review will be conducted in accordance with the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis protocols. The following electronic databases will be searched from their inception to February 2022: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library, and Chinese databases such as Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM), Chinese Medical Current Content (CMCC), Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP), WanFang Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). No language restrictions will be applied to the search strategy. Randomized controlled trials and cohort and case-control studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria will be included in this study. The meta-analysis will be performed using RevMan 5.3 software. Each session of this systematic review will be conducted independently by 2 members. RESULTS: This review evaluates the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of PTH after TBI. CONCLUSION: This review provides substantial evidence for the clinical application of acupuncture in PTH treatment after TBI. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Since the data in this study will be retrieved from published trials, therefore the Patient Consent Statement and Ethical Approval are not required. We will disseminate our results by publishing the research in a peer-reviewed journal. TRAIL REGISTRATION NUMBER: The protocol was registered in INPLASY (INPLASY 202220073).

RESUMO

Pomelo albedo was extracted with water to obtain the high methoxyl pectin, labeled as PAP. The physicochemical and rheological properties of PAP were determined. The effects of PAP addition on rheological property and thermal stability of konjac glucomannan (KGM) were evaluated. Results indicated that PAP was composed of arabinose, glucose and galacturonic acid with a relative mass percentage of 7.2%: 9.5%: 83.3%, and exhibited an average molecular weight of 56.6 kDa. The degree of esterification of PAP was 65.5%, showing PAP was a kind of high methoxyl pectin. Apparent viscosity of PAP was concentration-dependently increased, while it was slightly enhanced with salt (NaCl or CaCl2) addition. Moreover, the addition of PAP declined the apparent viscosity, elastic property and thermal stability of KGM. It can be concluded that interaction was occurred between KGM and PAP. Meanwhile, the interaction mechanism between KGM and PAP has been preliminarily proposed. The present study can provide some references for the application of PAP and support the combination usage of this pectin and KGM in food and other industries.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) serum on expression of myogenic differentiation antigen (Myod) and autophagy-related protein Beclin 1 in cultured muscle satellite cells of rats under starvation conditions. METHODS: The primary multifidus muscle satellite cells of one male SD rat were isolated and cultured to obtain the 3rd generation of cells. The EA serum was got from the rat received EA stimulation of bilateral "Weizhong" (BL40, 2 Hz/10 Hz, 1 mA, duration of 20 min, once daily for 7 days). The cell suspension (2×104/well) of the 3rd generation of cultured cells was transferred to each well of a 96-well plate in medium containing 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS). Twelve duplicate wells were set up for the blank control serum (without FBS), 10% FBS, 10% EA serum, 20% EA serum and 30% EA serum groups and incubated for 12 h and 24 h, respectively. Each well was supplemented with 10 µL CCK-8 reagent to be incubated for 1 h again for observing the state of cell proliferation. After culturing the primary muscle satellite cells in serum-free medium for 12 h, the cells were randomly divided into serum-free group, 10% fetal bovine serum group and optimal concentration electroacupuncture serum group, and serum of corresponding concentration was added respectively. The expression levels of Beclin 1 and cell-proliferation-related protein Myod were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: CCK-8 assay displayed that the proliferation levels were significantly higher at 12 h and 24 h after serum intervention in the 10% FBS, 10% EA serum, 20% EA serum and 30% EA serum groups than that in the blank control serum group (P<0.01), and at 24 h in the 3 EA serum groups than in the 10% FBS group (P<0.01), but without significant difference among the three EA serum groups (P>0.05). As a result, 10% EA serum was selected as the optimal concentration for Western blot tests. No significant difference was found in the expression levels of Myod and Beclin 1 proteins among the serum-free, 10% FBS and 10% EA serum groups before intervention (P>0.05), and there was a marked up-regulation of Myod expression and an obvious down-regulation of Beclin 1 expression at 12 h in both the 10% EA serum and 10% FBS groups in comparison with their own pre-intervention (P<0.05). There were a marked up-re-gulation of Myod expression at both 12 h and 24 h and Beclin 1 expression at 24 h in both the 10% EA serum group and 10% FBS group than that in the serum-free group (P<0.05), and an obvious down-regulation of Beclin 1 expression at 12 h in both 10% FBS and 10% EA serum groups than that in the serum-free group (P<0.05, P<0.01). After 24 h's serum intervention, there was an increase of Myod expression and a reduction of Beclin 1 expression in both 10% FBS and 10% EA serum groups compared with those after the 12 h intervention (P<0.05). No significant differences were found between the 10% FBS and 10% EA serum groups in the expression levels of Myod and Beclin 1 proteins (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: EA serum can promote proliferation of cultured muscle satellite cells under starvation conditions, which is related to its functions in regulating expression of Beclin 1 and cell-proliferation-related protein Myod.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has become a major cause of morbidity and mortality both in China and abroad. Disorders of consciousness following severe TBI is a common refractory complication, resulting in difficult rehabilitation and poor life quality. However, effective therapeutic approaches remain limited. Although acupuncture has been widely applied in the treatment of neurological disorders in China, its efficacy and safety for consciousness recovery remain to be elucidated. METHODS: Here, we conduct a study design and protocol of a randomized, blinded, controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture at auricular acupoints "heart" and "brainstem" combined with body acupuncture in the consciousness recovery of patients with TBI. A total of 80 patients with initial Glasgow coma scale score between 3 and 8 points will be recruited in the trial and randomized into intervention (combined application of auricular electroacupuncture and body acupuncture) group or control (conventional treatment) group. Patients in the intervention group will receive electroacupuncture at bilateral auricular acupoints "heart" and "brainstem" (4 points in total) combined with body acupuncture in addition to conventional treatment while patients in the control group will receive conventional treatment alone for 8 weeks. The primary outcomes are changes of Glasgow coma scale score and mismatch negativity of event-related brain potentials at baseline after 4 weeks after the final treatment and 4 weeks after the final treatment. The secondary outcome measures will be changes of Barthel and FuglMeyer scores at baseline after 4 weeks after the final treatment and 4 weeks after the final treatment. The safety will also be assessed by monitoring the incidence of adverse events and changes in vital signs during the study. DISCUSSION: Results from this trial will significantly support the application of auricular acupuncture and body acupuncture in the consciousness recovery of patients with severe TBI. If found to be effective and safe, auricular acupuncture combined with body acupuncture will be a valuable complementary option for comatose patients with TBI. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) is a frequent complication after stroke and limits patients' physical functioning of the affected arm, thus compromising their quality of life. Fu's subcutaneous needling (FSN) has been widely applied in the treatment of pain diseases in China; however, its efficacy and safety for HSP remain to be elucidated. We therefore conducted a randomized, controlled trial to summarize the current evidence on the effects of FSN on the recovery outcomes of stroke survivors with HSP. METHODS: Here, we conduct a study design and protocol of a randomized, blinded, controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of FSN in patients with HSP. A total of 60 patients with numerical rating scale (NRS) score above 1 will be recruited in the trial and randomized into FSN group or usual care (UC) group. Patients in the FSN group will receive FSN treatment combined with UC treatment while patients in the UC group will receive UC treatment alone for 4 weeks. The primary outcomes are changes of NRS at baseline, after the 1st treatment, after the final treatment and 4 weeks after the final treatment. Secondary measurements will be changes of Fugl-Meyer score, constant score, MPQ-SF score, quality of life score, and range of motion at baseline, after the final treatment, and 4 weeks after the final treatment. The safety will also be assessed by monitoring the incidence of adverse events and changes in vital signs during the study. DISCUSSION: Results from this trial will significantly support the application of FSN in the recovery of patients with HSP. If found to be effective and safe, FSN will be a valuable complementary option for patients with HSP. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry: ChiCTR1900021644 (registered on March 2, 2019).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Uterine fibroids represent the most common gynecological benign tumors in reproductive females. Acupuncture has been applied as a therapeutic modality in China to treat uterine fibroids. However, currently, few critical systematic reviews regarding the effect of acupuncture on uterine fibroids have been published. Our proposed review aims to evaluate the current evidence on the efficacy of acupuncture for uterine fibroids. METHODS: A total of 7 databases were searched from their inception to December 2018, including PubMed, Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database, the Chinese Biomedical database, and the Wanfang database. The primary outcomes will be reduction in uterine volume and number of fibroids. Secondary outcomes are pelvic or low-back pain, assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS); Irregular menstrual periods; Low-abdominal pressure symptoms such as frequent or urgent urination, or constipation and adverse events. Data synthesis will be computed by RevManV.5.3.5 software when a data-analysis is allowed. Methodological quality will be evaluated with the risk of bias according to Cochrane Handbook. RESULTS: This study will provide high-quality evidence of acupuncture for uterine fibroids. CONCLUSION: The conclusion of this systematic review will provide evidence to judge whether acupuncture is an effective therapeutic intervention for patients with uterine fibroids. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has been applied to relieve low back pain (LBP) in many countries. However, a bibliometric analysis of the global use of acupuncture for LBP is rare. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the state of the art and trends concerning the global use of acupuncture for LBP in recent 20 years. METHODS: Literature relating to acupuncture for LBP from 1997 to 2016 was retrieved from Web of Science. CiteSpace was used to analyze country/institution, cited journals, authors/cited authors, cited references, and keywords. An analysis of counts and centrality was used to reveal publication outputs, countries/institutions, core journals, active authors, foundation references, hot topics, and frontiers. RESULTS: A total of 958 references were obtained, and the total number of publications continually increased over the investigated period. Journal articles (662) were the most frequently occurring document type. The most productive country and institution in this field was the USA (342) and Harvard University (47), respectively. The J Altern Complem Med (69) was the most productive journal, and Pain (636) was the most cocited journal, which reflected the nature of the research. The Haake's (2007) article (cocitation counts: 130) and the Cherkin's (2001) article (centrality: 0.59) were the most representative and symbolic references, with the highest cocitation number and centrality, respectively. Cherkin was the most influential author, with the highest number of publications of 25 and a cocitation number of 226. The four hot topics in acupuncture for LBP were research method, evaluation, economy, and comprehensive therapy. The three frontier topics were intervention, test reliability, and prevalence. CONCLUSION: This study provides an insight into acupuncture for LBP and valuable information for acupuncture researchers to identify new perspectives on potential collaborators and cooperative institutions, hot topics, and research frontiers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of oxymatrine injection (OI) combined with low-dose paclitaxel on expressions of mRNAs and proteins of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) in human gastric carcinoma SGC-7901 cells. METHODS: Methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay was used to examine the effects of OI combined with low-dose paclitaxel on proliferation of SGC-7901 cells. Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, immunofluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were employed to measure the expressions of VEGF and CXCR4 mRNAs and proteins in gastric carcinoma SGC-7901 cells respectively. RESULTS: Except that 20 µg/mL paclitaxel had no influence on expression of VEGF mRNA in SGC-7901 cells (P>0.05), 40 µg/mL OI or low-dose paclitaxel (20 µg/mL) inhibited the proliferation of SGC-7901 cells and reduced the expressions of VEGF and CXCR4 mRNAs and proteins in SGC-7901 cells (P<0.01). The expressions of VEGF and CXCR4 mRNAs and proteins in the OI plus low-dose paclitaxel group were markedly lower than those in the low-dose paclitaxel group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: OI combined with low-dose paclitaxel can inhibit VEGF and CXCR4 of gastric carcinoma SGC-7901 cells markedly, which may be one of its mechanisms of anti-angiogenic ability.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the short and long-term therapeutic effects on cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) treated with simple Long's bone-setting manipulation, abdominal acupuncture and abdominal acupuncture plus Long's bone-setting manipulation. METHODS: One hundred and eighty cases of CSR were randomly allocated into abdominal acupuncture plus bone-setting group (combined therapy group), bone-setting group and abdominal acupuncture group, 60 cases in each group. In combined therapy group, the abdominal acupuncture and Long's bone-setting were applied in combination. Abdominal acupuncture was applied to Zhongwan (CV 12), Guanyuan (CV 4), Shiguan (KI 18), Shangqu (KI 17), etc. Long's manipulation, such as bone-setting in head-upward posture and bone-setting in head-lateral posture, was adopted. In bone-setting group and abdominal acupuncture group, Long's bone-setting manipulation and abdominal acupuncture were adopted simply and respectively. The clinical therapeutic effects were compared after 2 courses of treatment (short-term) and 1-month after treatment (long-term) among groups. RESULTS: The short and long-term curative and markedly effective rates in combined therapy group were 80.7% (46/57) and 68.4% (39/57) respectively, which were better than those of 63.64% (35/55), 30.9% (17/55) in bone-setting group and 58.9% (33/56), 50.0% (28/56) in abdominal acupuncture group, separately (all P < 0.05). Moreover, the long-term curative and markedly effective rate in abdominal acupuncture group was superior to that in bone-setting group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Abdominal acupuncture plus Long's bone-setting manipulation has significant efficacy of either short or long-term on CSR, which is superior to the efficacy of either simple abdominal acupuncture or Long's bone-setting manipulation and indicates superimposed effect. Hence, it is one of the better approaches in CSR treatment.

Induction of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) is known to associate with cellular response to divergent pathophysiological stresses including whole body hyperthermia (WBH) and ischemia-reperfusion. However, a direct cause-effect relationship between HSF1 activation and cytoprotection induced by myocardial preconditioning has not been conclusively established, mainly due to the limitations of available experiment tools. In the present studies, we used a novel approach to block HSF1 with small interfering RNA (siRNA) technique in vivo. Male adult ICR mice were treated intraperitoneally with amine (vehicle) or siRNA specific to HSF1 (siRNA-HSF1). Three days later, WBH preconditioning protocol (rectal temperature 42 degrees C for 15 min) was applied to these mice under light anesthesia. WBH preconditioning resulted in 2.7-fold and 3.4-fold increase in cardiac HSF1 mRNA and protein expression respectively 2 hours after WBH, which was inhibited in the siRNA-treated mice. The silencing effect of siRNA on HSF1 was associated with complete loss of the infarct- limiting protection by WBH preconditioning after 48 hours. Pretreatment with siRNA-HSF1 had no effect on infarct size in the sham control animals as compared with the amine-treated group. DNA micro-array analysis revealed that siRNA-HSF1 caused a general inhibition on multiple members of HSP family, except Hsp32, Hsp47 and Hsp60. In addition, the silencing effect of siRNA on HSF1 and HSPs gene expression was transient and its inhibitory effect disappeared by 10 days after treatment. siRNA-HSF1 also impaired the thermotolerance of the heat shocked mice as indicated by higher mortality following WBH. For the first time, we have applied siRNA technique in the field of myocardial preconditioning to demonstrate HSF1 activation as an essential step in WBH preconditioning against cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury.
