RESUMO

Classical trigeminal neuralgia (CTN) refers to episodic pain that is strictly confined to the trigeminal distribution area, and the thalamus is an important component of the trigeminal sensory pathway. Probabilistic tracking imaging algorithm was used to identify specific connections between the thalamus and the cortex, in order to identify structural changes in the thalamus of patients with CTN and perform thalamic segmentation. A total of 32 patients with CTN and 32 healthy controls underwent DTI-MRI scanning (3.0 T). Differences in fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD) and mean diffusivity (MD) between the groups were studied. Correlation analysis was performed with clinical course and pain level. Compared to the healthy controls, patients in the CTN group had significantly reduced FA, increased AD, RD and MD in somatosensory subregion of the bilateral thalamus, increased RD in frontal subregion, increased RD and MD in motor subregion. Correlation analysis showed that patient history was positively correlated with pain grading, and that medical history was positively correlated with significantly reduced FA in somatosensory subregion, negatively correlated with increased RD and MD in motor subregion. We used DTI-based probabilistic fiber tracking to discover altered structural connectivity between the thalamus and cerebral cortex in patients with CTN and to obtain a thalamic segmentation atlas, which will help to further understand the pathophysiology of CTN and serve as a future reference for thalamic deep brain stimulation electrode implantation for the treatment of intractable pain.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune-mediated inflammatory skin disease. The main clinical manifestation of this complex condition is scaly erythema. Excimer 308-nm light can be used to selectively and safely treat skin lesions. In clinical practice, the combination of Xiaobi decoction combined with 308-nm excimer light therapy has been found to have a beneficial effect on advanced psoriasis vulgaris. However, the effect of Xiaobi decoction on light sensitivity in psoriasis patients has not been explored. Therefore, this study aimed to observe the effect of Xiaobi decoction on the minimal erythema dose (MED) value in guinea pigs. METHODS: Eighty guinea pigs were divided into a Xiaobi decoction group and a control group according to the serial number: guinea pigs with odd numbers were assigned into the Xiaobi decoction group, and those with even numbers were assigned into the control group. The Xiaobi decoction group was administrated Xiaobi decoction by gastric lavage, while the control group was given distilled water by gastric lavage. The back skin of the guinea pigs in the two groups was irradiated with a 308-nm excimer lamp before gavaging, and after 10, 20, and 30 days of gavaging. The MED values 24 hours after irradiation were recorded. RESULTS: The average MED in the Xiaobi decoction group was (800±126.5) mJ/cm2, compared with (780±107.7) mJ/cm2 in the control group, and the difference was not significant (P>0.05). After 10 days, 20 days, and 30 days of gavaging, the MED values of the guinea pigs in the Xiaobi decoction group were significantly lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). Blood tests showed that the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (164.5±25.7 vs. 145.3±27.4, P=0.002) and interleukin-23 (1.8±0.7 vs. 1.5±0.5, P=0.030) were significantly lower in the Xiaobi decoction group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Xiaobi decoction can reduce the MED value of guinea pigs, and increase the sensitivity of skin lesions to 308-nm excimer light and the amount of light absorbed by skin lesions. These results may represent the mechanisms of action of Xiaobi decoction in the treatment of psoriasis.

RESUMO

Current ecological risk assessment and controlling element identification methods of harmful algal blooms (HABs) are not connected. Here, we identified the controlling elements by correlation and principal component analyses, and the analytic hierarchy process. A compound eutrophication index (CEI) integrating risk assessment with controlling element identification was constructed and verified using data collected from Jiaozhou Bay, China. The CEI results agreed with the chlorophyll-a concentration and the main eutrophication assessment results. The HAB risk assessment of the CEI was more efficient than that of the nutrient quality index and Assessment of Estuarine Trophic Status. The contribution ratio of the loads and concentrations of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand) to HABs in Jiaozhou Bay was 70%. In the high-risk areas, the contribution ratio of nutrients to HABs was 77%. Therefore, terrestrial nutrient inputs must be reduced to prevent and control HABs in the north-eastern areas of Jiaozhou Bay.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rhizoma Pinelliae is the dried tuber of Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that Rhizoma Pinelliae has antitussive, antiemetic, glandular secretion inhibiting and antitumor effects. OBJECTIVES: To optimize the processing technology of Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum, and to study its anti-tumor effect. METHODS: Orthogonal design method was applied to analyze the effects of factors such as licorice concentration volume, soaking time and processing temperature on processing technology of Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum; MTT assay and flow cytometry were used to determine the inhibitory effect of Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum on Bel-7402 cells. RESULTS: During the processing of Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum, the size of influence of licorice concentration volume, soaking time and processing temperature on processing results of Rhizoma Pinelliae was: B>C>A in descending order, i.e. soaking time>processing temperature>licorice concentration volume, different concentrations of Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum ethanol extracts could all exert inhibitory effect on the growth and proliferation of Bel-7402 cells, and with the increase of drug concentration and the extension of culture time, the cell proliferation inhibitory effect of Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum ethanol extract became more and more evident. Apoptotic rate of 1.5 mg/ml Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum ethanol extract group reached 13.53%, the difference was extremely significant compared with the control group. In conclusion the factor most influential to the processing technology of Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum was soaking time, followed by processing temperature, the factor least influential was licorice concentration volume. CONCLUSION: Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum has inhibitory effect on growth and proliferation of Bel-7402 cells.

RESUMO

Jiaozhou Bay has recently suffered from serious problems with pollution and eutrophication. Thus, land-based pollutant load must be reduced through a national control program. In this study, we developed a 3D water quality model to determine the environmental capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus in Jiaozhou Bay. A 3D hydrodynamic model (the estuarine, coastal, and ocean modeling system with sediments) was coupled with a water quality model, which was adapted from the dynamic model of nitrogen and phosphorus for a mesocosm near Jiaozhou Bay. The water quality model is divided into seven components: dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate, phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus, dissolved organic nitrogen, and dissolved organic phosphorus. Furthermore, it was calibrated based on data collected from Jiaozhou Bay in 2003. The proposed model effectively reproduced the spatiotemporal variability in nutrient concentration, thus suggesting that a reasonable numerical representation of the prototype system must be developed for further evaluation of environmental capacity.

RESUMO

In recent years, with the development of society and economy of Qingdao, environment and ecosystem problems, for instance, red ties, become more and more serious in Jiaozhou Bay, China, because of the increasing pollutants discharged into it. In order to solve these problems, an eco-hydrodynamic model is constructed to estimate the marine environmental capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients in Jiaozhou Bay, whose simulation results are rational for the bay. According to the model, if the target is set to achieve water quality (grade II) in Jiaozhou Bay, the environmental capacity of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus in one year are approximately 7800 and 840 tons, respectively. Thus our research offers necessary scientific foundation to the total loads control efforts in this area.

RESUMO

Exchange rates of dissolved nutrients at the sediment-water interface were studied before and after diatom bloom from March to May in the East China Sea in 2005. Intact sediment cores which were sampled at 10 sites were incubated on board, and exchange rates were calculated in the function method. It was shown that sediment absorbed NO3(-) -N before bloom with the exchange rate ranging from - 1.33 mmol/(m2 d) to - 0.68 mmol/(m2 d). The sediment released NO3(-) -N after bloom with the exchange rate ranging from - 0.69 mmol/( m2 d) to 0.82 mmol/( m2 d). NH4(+) -N was almost released from sediment with the exchange rate ranging from -0.65 mmol/(m d) to 1.46 mmol/( m2 d), and the rate was higher before bloom than that after bloom. NO2(-) -N moved into sediment all along except at Zc17 with the exchange rate ranging from - 0.09 mmol/(m2 d) to 0.05 mmol/(m2 d), and the rate was a little higher after bloom than that before bloom. SiO3(2-) -Si was released from sediment all the time with the exchange rate ranging from 0.85 mmol/(m d) to 9.23 mmol/( m2 d), and the rate was higher after bloom than that before bloom. The sediment absorbed PO4(3-) -P before bloom with the exchange rate ranging from -0.06 mmol/(m2 d) to -0.01 mmol/(m2 d), but released PO4(3-) -P after bloom with the exchange rate ranging from 0 mmol/(m2 d) to 1.26 mmol/(m2 d). PO4(3-) -P and NO3(-) -N which were absorbed by sediment in spring restricted the diatom bloom, but their release from sediment after diatom bloom may make a great contribution to subsequent dinoflagellate bloom.

RESUMO

Based on the data of COD and petroleum hydrocarbons collected in the cruise from April 25 to May 2, 2002 in intensive red tide occurrence areas in East China Sea, the distribution of COD, and petroleum hydrocarbons and the eutrophication index(EI) were analyzed. The results showed that the EI and COD value were both high in coastal water, and decreased gradually away from shore. After the preliminary study on the relationships between correlative factors and occurrence of red tide, it was found that high EI and COD were necessary. There would be great chances for the red tide to break out under conditions that the EI was between 2.5 and 15 and COD concentration was between 0.8 to 1.4 mg.L-1 in seawater, along with the favorable temperature and salinity.
