RESUMO

Withaferin A (WFA) is a natural compound separated from the medicinal plant Withania somnifera. As reported, it has the potential to safely cure rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in animal models. Nevertheless, the action mechanism of WFA in treating RA has not been completely illuminated. The study was to explore the action and mechanism of WFA on arthritic rats. First, a collagen-induced arthritis rat model was established. WFA administration alleviated inflammation and injury in arthritic rats. Subsequently, fibroblast synovial cells (FLS) of arthritic rats were separated and cell proliferation and apoptosis abilities were tested. It was found that WFA was available to repress FLS cell proliferation and accelerate apoptosis. MicroRNA-1297 was downregulated in RA patients. Clinical correlation analysis suggested that miR-1297 in the serum of RA patients was negatively associated with pro-inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-6, IL-17, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and RA diagnostic indexes (RF, DAS28). In the meantime, miR-1297 had superior diagnostic value in differentiating RA patients from healthy people. Karyopherin α2 (KPNA2) was the downstream target of miR-1297, while miR-1297 negatively modulated KPNA2 expression. Importantly, WFA further restrained KPNA2 expression via elevating miR-1297 in functional rescue experiments, thereby treating inflammation and injury in arthritic rats and repressing FLS cell proliferation and activation. In short, WFA alleviated inflammation and joint damage in arthritic rats via elevating miR-1297 to target KPNA2.

RESUMO

Menopausal symptoms (or climacteric syndrome) refer to a series of symptoms that occur during the perimenopausal and early postmenopausal period. About 80% of women will have various degrees of menopausal symptoms, and most of them need associated treatment. Asian women are more inclined to choose traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in terms of therapeutic method, and menopausal hormone therapy has low acceptance because the women have been misinformed about the side effects of hormones. Therefore, TCM is used for menopausal symptoms in women in most Asian countries, including China, Japan, Vietnam, and South Korea. In the basic theory of TCM, the menopause is classified as the Kidney deficiency and imbalance of Yin and Yang; therefore, the treatment methods in either Chinese patent medicine or Chinese herbal medicine are aimed at supplementing the Kidney function and rebalancing Yin and Yang. It is believed that TCM treatment is suitable for patients with mild or moderate menopausal symptoms. The incidence rate of adverse reactions in terms of breast tenderness and irregular vaginal bleeding is lower than that of hormone therapy. However, there are few randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies on TCM treatment of menopausal syndrome. Future studies should be undertaken to confirm its merits.

RESUMO

Objective: To observe the effects of blueberry and nuclear expression of transcription factor-кb (NF-кb) p65 in an experimental rat model of liver fibrosis. Methods: Forty-five Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into isotonic saline control group (A); model group (B); blueberry juice prevention group (C, 15 g/kg); dan-shao-hua-xian capsule prevention group (D, 1 g/kg); and blueberry juice + dan-shao-hua-xian capsule prevention group (E). Rat liver fibrosis model was established by covalent compound carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)). Each prevention group was given the corresponding dose of blueberry juice or (and) dan-shao-hua-xian capsule, and the rats were sacrificed after 8 weeks. The degree of liver fibrosis was evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin stain. A liver tissue of NF-κBp65 was detected by immunohistochemical method. The NF-κBp65 protein expression of liver tissue and transforming growth factor (TGF) ß1 was detected by Western blot. Data of multiple groups were compared by one-way analysis of variance, and rank sum test. Results: Immunohistochemistry detected that TGFß1 protein was mainly expressed in mesenchymal origin of hepatic stellate cells. The expression level of group A (3.75 ± 1.67) was low, while those of group B (9.00 ± 2.07), C (7.33 ± 1.00), D (6.00 ± 1.51), and E (3.5 ± 1.41) were high. However, the expression level of TGF-ß1 protein in hepatic tissues of group B was significantly higher than that of group C, D and E [group E: 3.5 ± 1.41, F = 18.350, P < 0.05]. In addition, group D was higher than group E (P < 0.05). The expression of NF- kappa Bp65 protein was very complex, and the expression patterns in different groups were different (Statistical calculation of experimental data were based on expression of liver cells). Compared with group B (4.37 ± 2.13), the relative expression levels of NF-κBp65 protein in-group A (0.46 ± 0.25), group C (2.76 ± 1.01), group D (2.13 ± 1.51), group E (1.88 ± 0.99) were significantly decreased (F = 27.490, P < 0.05), and the expression trend was consistent with TGFß1 protein. Western blot detected NF-κBp65 protein in liver tissues of rats. Compared with group A, levels in groups B, C, D and E were significantly increased (F = 96.983, P < 0.05), and groups C, D and E were significantly lower. The E group was significantly lower than the C group (F = 96.983, P < 0.05), and the degree of hepatic fibrosis was lower in each prevention group than in the B group (T = 24.1, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Blueberries have preventive effect on CCl4-induced hepatic fibrosis in rats, and its preventive mechanism may inhibit the expression and activation of NF-κBp65 in hepatocytes, thereby reducing TGFß1- mediated production or activation.

RESUMO

Objective: To assess the implementation and impact of programs carried out by the National Demonstration Areas for Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases. Methods: Both sociological and epidemiological methods were used to collect qualitative and quantitative data in November and December, 2016 in order to conduct on process and outcome evaluation of the above mentioned objective. In the meantime, case study was also conducted. Results: All the National Demonstration Areas for Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases were found well implemented across the country, with health education and health promotion, surveillance and safeguard measures in particular. A government-led and inter-sector coordination and communication mechanism had been well established, with more than 16 non-health departments actively involved. 28.7% of the residents living in the National Demonstration Areas for Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases were aware of the key messages related to chronic diseases. Among the residents, 72.1% of them consumed vegetables and 53.6% consumed fruits daily, with another 86.9% walked at least 10 minutes per day. Over 70% of the patients with hypertension or diabetes reported that they were taken care of by the Community Health Centers, and above 50% of them were under standardized management. Residents, living in the National Demonstration Areas under higher ranking of implementation scores, were more likely to be aware of relevant knowledge on chronic disease control and prevention (OR=6.591, 95%CI: 5.188-8.373), salt reduction (OR=1.352, 95%CI: 1.151-1.589), oil reduction (OR=1.477, 95%CI: 1.249-1.746) and recommendation on physical activities (OR=1.975, 95%CI: 1.623- 2.403). Conclusion: The implementation of programs carried out by the National Demonstration Areas for Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases had served a local platform for the control and prevention of non-communicable diseases, and thus become an important 'carrier' for chronic disease prevention and control programs in China.

RESUMO

AIMS: Important transformations in psychiatric healthcare (HC) delivery have been implemented in Latin America during the beginning of 21st century. However, information on current service uses patterns is scant, obstructing the estimates and proper planning of service needs for general population. The current investigation aims to describe patterns and estimates predictors of 12-month HC use by individuals with mental disorders in São Paulo metropolitan area, Brazil. METHOD: Data are from São Paulo Mental Health Survey, a cross-sectional multistage representative study. Participants were face-to-face interviewed in their household, using a structured diagnostic interview, the World Mental Health Survey Initiative version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. A total of 5037 respondents, non-institutionalised, aged 18 years and older were interviewed. The response rate was 81.3%. We determined the percentages of individuals with 12-month DSM-IV anxiety, mood and substance disorders that received treatment in the 12 months prior to assessment in main service sectors (specialty mental health, general medicine, human services (HS), and complementary and alternative medicine). The number of visits and percentage of individuals who received treatment at minimally adequacy also was estimated. Multilevel regression controlled contextual variables that influenced the use of service and treatment adequacy. RESULTS: Only 10.1% of respondents used some HC service in the 12 months prior to assessment for their psychiatric problems, including 3.9% of them being treated either by a psychiatrist, 3.5% by a non-psychiatrist mental health specialist, 3.3% by a general medical (GM) provider, 1.5% by a HS provider and 1.4% by a complementary and alternative medical provider. In general, those participants who received service in the mental health specialty sector reported more visits than those in the GM sector (median 3.9 v. 1.5 visits). The cases seen in specialty sector outnumber those visiting GM treatment in terms of minimally adequate treatment (54.6 v. 23.2%). The likelihood of receiving treatment was significantly greater among individuals diagnosed with any anxiety and mood disorder, presenting more severe disorders, and with possession of HC insurance. CONCLUSIONS: The great majority of individuals with an active mental disorder in São Paulo were either untreated or insufficiently treated. Awareness and training programmes to GM professionals are advocated to improve recognition, care take and referral to specialty care when needed. Proper integration among HC sectors is recommended.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effect of Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP) against liver injury induced by D-galactose in aging mice and its mechanisms. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J were randomly divided into three groups with 10 mice in each group. In the D-galactose model group, the mice were subcutaneously injected with D-galactose (120 mg/kg) qd×42; in the ASP+D-galactose group, from the 8th day of the establishment of D-galactose model, the mice were subcutaneously injected with ASP (120 mg/kg) qd×35. In the normal control group, the mice were subcutaneously injected with isotonic saline of the same volume at the same time point. On the 2nd day after the injection was finished, the ocular blood was collected to prepare serum and measure the content of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and total bilirubin (TBil). The liver tissue homogenate was prepared to measure the content of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), malondialdehyde (MDA), and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). A paraffin section of liver tissue was prepared; HE staining was performed to observe the pathomorphological changes of the liver, periodic acid-Schiff staining (PAS) was used to observe the changes in glycogen in the liver, and a transmission electron microscope was used to observe the hepatocyte ultrastructure. RESULTS: The D-galactose model group had increased content of ALT, AST, and TBil, reduced activities of SOD and GSH-Px, an increased content of MDA, and severe liver injuries; the hepatocytes showed degenerative changes, the amount of glycogen in the liver decreased, and the accumulation of AGEs increased. The ASP+D-galactose group had reduced content of ALT, AST, and TBil, increased activities of SOD and GSH-Px, and reduced content of MDA and AGEs; the amount of glycogen in the liver increased, and liver injury and hepatocyte injury were alleviated. CONCLUSION: ASP can antagonize the liver injury induced by D-galactose in aging mice, and its mechanism may be related to the inhibition of oxidative stress.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The root of Helicteres angustifolia L. (Sterculiaceae) has been used as tea to treat diabetics effectively by local people in Laos. However, no scientific evidence is available for this ethnomedicinal usage. This study was undertaken to explore the hypoglycemic effect of aqueous extract from Helicteres angustifolia root. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The effect of aqueous extract from Helicteres angustifolia root on glucose consumption in C2C12 myotubes was investigated at a dose of 25, 50 and 100 µg/mL, respectively. The alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the extract was evaluated using rat intestinal maltase and sucrose. Moreover, oral sucrose tolerance test (OSTT) in normal and streptozotocin induced diabetic rats was performed. Finally, their cytotoxicity in C2C12 cells and acute oral toxicity in rats was analyzed. RESULTS: Aqueous root extract of Helicteres angustifolia significantly enhanced glucose consumption in C2C12 myotubes. The extract also significantly inhibited rat intestinal maltase (IC50 = 1.44 ± 0.24 mg/mL) and sucrase activity (IC50 = 0.54 ± 0.12 mg/mL), respectively. The OSTT results showed that the extract significantly suppressed the increase of blood glucose levels in normal and diabetic rats. The extract was also proven to have low acute toxicity (LD50 > 5 g/kg) and low cytotoxicity in C2C12 cells (IC50 > 0.4 mg/mL). CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study indicate that aqueous root extract of Helicteres angustifolia possesses significant alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity and moderate enhanced glucose consumption activity, while with low cytotoxic and acute toxicity.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in the effects of Ephedra sinica Stapf and Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis on angiogenesis in the treatment of bleomycin-induced rat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The rat models were created using bleomycin. The animals were divided into six groups: model, control, Ephedra alone, Schisandrae alone, combination of Ephedra and Schisandrae, and hydrocortisone alone. The treatments were administered for 28 days. After 7 and 28 days, the rats were sacrificed for pathological morphology examination, microvascular density determination, and angiogenesis-related cytokine examination. The Ephedra and hydrocortisone groups demonstrated significantly reduced alveolitis and pulmonary fibrosis grades compared with the model group (P < 0.05). The number of blood vessels in the Ephedra group was higher than that in the Schisandrae and combination therapy groups. At 7 days, the expression level of endothelin (ET)-1 in the model group was significantly higher than that in the normal group (P < 0.01). The level of 6-keto-prostaglandin F1α (6-keto-PGF1α) in the treatment group increased, and there were significant differences between the Ephedra group and the combination therapy and normal groups (P < 0.05). Ephedra inhibited the increase in the lung coefficient. The combination therapy prevented pulmonary artery injury and angiogenesis of the arteries by reducing the level of ET-1 and promoting the level of 6-keto-PGF1α in the blood. Ephedra and Schisandrae prevented alveolitis and the development of pulmonary fibrosis.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of riboflavin on energy metabolism in hypoxic mice. Kunming mice were fed diets containing riboflavin at doses of 6, 12, 24 and 48 mg/kg, respectively for 2 weeks before exposure to a simulated altitude of 6000 m for 8 h. Changes of riboflavin status and energy metabolism were assessed biochemically. Simultaneously, a (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) based metabolomic technique was used to track the changes of plasma metabolic profiling. It was found that the content of hepatic riboflavin was decreased and erythrocyte glutathione activation coefficient was elevated significantly under hypoxic condition. Meanwhile, increased plasma pyruvate, lactate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and urea, as well as decreased plasma carnitine were observed. Riboflavin supplementation improved riboflavin status remarkably in hypoxic mice and decreased plasma levels of pyruvate, free fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate significantly. Plasma carnitine was increased in response to riboflavin supplementation. Results obtained from (1)H NMR analysis were basically in line with the data from biochemical assays and remarkable changes in plasma taurine, choline and some other metabolites were also indicated. It was concluded that riboflavin requirement was increased under acute hypoxic condition and riboflavin supplementation was effective in improving energy metabolism in hypoxic mice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated whether supplementations of different vitamins and iron could reduce the serum homocysteine levels in 91 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Atrophic glossitis (AG) patients with concomitant deficiencies of vitamin B12 only (n = 39, group I), folic acid only (n = 10, group II), iron only (n = 9, group III), or vitamin B12 plus iron (n = 19, group IV) were treated with vitamin BC capsules plus deficient hematinics. AG patients without definite hematinic deficiencies (n = 14, group V) were treated with vitamin BC capsules only. The blood homocysteine and hematinic levels at baseline and after treatment till all oral symptoms had disappeared were measured and compared by paired t-test. RESULTS: Supplementations with vitamin BC capsules plus corresponding deficient hematinics for groups I, II, III, IV patients and with vitamin BC capsules only for group V patients could reduce the high serum homocysteine levels to significantly lower levels after a mean treatment period of 8.3-11.6 months (all P-values < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Supplementations with vitamin BC capsules plus corresponding deficient hematinics or with vitamin BC capsules only can reduce the high serum homocysteine levels to significantly lower levels in AG patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) have the potency to proliferate and differentiate into odontoblasts and play an important role in dentine formation and reparation. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of ginsenoside Rg1 on the proliferation and differentiation of hDPCs. METHODS: hDPCs were incubated with different concentrations of ginsenoside Rg1 (0.1, 0.5, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 µmol/L). The effects of ginsenoside Rg1 on the proliferative ability of hDPCs were evaluated by a fibroblast colony forming test, MTT assay and flow cytometry for cell cycle. The control group, osteogenic induction group, ginsenoside Rg1 (5 µmol/L) group and combination group were designed, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and FQ-PCR for gene expressions of dentine sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) and dentine matrix protein 1 (DMP1) were performed to evaluate the differentiation of hDPCs. RESULTS: The proliferative ability of hDPCs in ginsenoside Rg1 was significantly enhanced (p < 0.05), especially in the ginsenoside Rg1 (5 µmol/L) group. ALP activity and gene expressions of DSPP and DMP1 were increased in the induction group, ginsenoside Rg1 group, and their combination group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that ginsenoside Rg1 promotes the proliferation and differentiation of hDPCs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of three different treatment modalities on the reduction of serum anti-gastric parietal cell autoantibody (GPCA) level in GPCA-positive oral lichen planus (OLP) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 147 GPCA-positive OLP patients, 100 were treated with levamisole plus vitamin B12, 10 with vitamin B12 only and 37 with levamisole only. The serum GPCA levels in 147 OLP patients were measured at baseline and after treatment. RESULTS: Treatment with levamisole plus vitamin B12 for a period of 2-50 months and treatment with vitamin B12 only for a period of 4-44 months could effectively reduce the high serum GPCA level to undetectable level in 100 and 10 OLP patients, respectively. However, treatment with levamisole only for a period of 2-50 months could not modulate the high mean serum GPCA titer to a significantly lower level in 37 OLP patients. A 92% GPCA recurrence rate was found in 25 OLP patients receiving no further vitamin B12 treatment during the GPCA-negative remission period. CONCLUSION: For GPCA-positive OLP patients, treatment modality containing vitamin B12 can effectively reduce the high serum GPCA level to undetectable level. OLP patients with underlying autoimmune atrophic gastritis trait should receive a maintenance vitamin B12 treatment for life.

RESUMO

Cell models of tauopathy were generated in order to study mechanisms of neurodegeneration involving abnormal changes of tau. They are based on neuroblastoma cell lines (N2a) that inducibly express different forms of the repeat domain of tau (tau(RD)), e.g. the 4-repeat domain of tau with the wild-type sequence, the repeat domain with the DeltaK280 mutation ("pro-aggregation mutant"), or the repeat domain with DeltaK280 and two proline point mutations ("anti-aggregation mutant"). The data indicate that the aggregation of tau(RD) is toxic, and that aggregation and toxicity can be prevented by low molecular weight compounds, notably compounds based on the N-phenylamine core. Thus the cell models are suitable for developing aggregation inhibitor drugs.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the inhibitory effect of magnesium lithospermate B (MLB) on hypoxia-induced elevation of intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) and nitric oxide (NO) release in endothelial cells. METHODS: The cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (ECV304) were cultured for 30 min under 95 % N(2) and 5 % CO2. Cell injury was evaluated by dye exclusion test and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay. [Ca2+]i was determined by Fura 2-AM. NO content was examined by the NO assay kit. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA expressions were measured by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. RESULTS: Cell viability was decreased from (93.0 +/- 2.6) % in normoxia to (85.5 +/- 2.1) % in hypoxia (P < 0.01), and LDH release was increased from (41 +/- 28) U/L in normoxia to (141+/-68) U/L in hypoxia (P < 0.01) in ECV304 cultured under calcium conditions. MLB 5 and 10 mg/L improved cell viability and inhibited LDH leakage in ECV304. In addition, hypoxia increased [Ca2+]i, NO release, and eNOS and iNOS mRNA expressions in ECV304 (P < 0.01). These increases could be inhibited by MLB 5 and 10 mg/L (P < 0.01), but they were unaffected by hypoxia under calcium-free conditions. CONCLUSION: MLB attenuates hypoxia-induced cell injury and inhibits hypoxia-induced increases of [Ca2+]i, NO release, and eNOS and iNOS mRNA expressions in ECV304 in Krebs'solution containing calcium. The decreases of NO production and eNOS mRNA expression are possibly associated with inhibition of extracellular calcium influx in MLB-treated ECV304

RESUMO

AIM: To study the effects of salvianolate, an aqueous extract of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, on the proliferation and endothelin release of cultured rat mesangial cells. METHODS: The proliferation of mesangial cells was determined in terms of [3H]thymidine uptake. The concentration of endothelin was measured by radioimmunoassay. The cytotoxicity of salvianolate was tested by tetrazolium (MTT) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) assay. RESULTS: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) 10 mg/L increased the proliferation and endothelin release in cultured mesangial cells. When mesangial cells pretreated with 3, 10, and 30 mg/L of salvianolate were incubated for 4 h with LPS, salvianolate exhibited a concentration dependent inhibitory effect on proliferation and endothelin levels in the mesangial cells induced by LPS. Furthermore, the increased basal levels of mesangial cells proliferation and the endothelin release were also effectively inhibited by salvianolate 30 mg/L at 4, 8, and 12 h. Besides, no cytotoxicity of salvianolate was observed. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that salvianolate can inhibit mesangial cells proliferation, which may be related to the decrease of endothelin release.

RESUMO

This paper presents the preliminary investigation on chondromalacia patella at our department in recent years. A random cluster sampling survey covering 2743 normal persons was carried out. The prevalence rate is 36.2%. It was found that, applying transmission electron microscope and immunohistochemical methods on to cartilage tissues of the abnormal region, articular cartilage necrosis was in direct proportion with the abnormal pressure, while the restoration capability of local chondrocytes was in inverse proportion with pathological changes and the pressure. The chondromalacia patella was produced by repeated abnormal stress acting on the cartilage. The stress derived from the uncongruency and the decreasing in the contact area of patellofemoral joint when the subluxation or tilt of patellae was caused by the abnormal anatomical and biomechanical relationship. The initial lesion was at the matrix of cartilage, the collagen network was disrupted, then proteoglycan was lost. The microenvironment of chondrocytes was changed with degradation of matrix. So the chondrocytes became degenerative and necrosis from superficial to deep layer, then feed back the matrix again. Finally, the total cartilage layer might disappear, and the bone under cartilage might proliferate. At late stage, the cartilage was completely destroyed and had no self-restorative ability. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are necessary. It is highly suggested axis radiograph of the knee with the tibiae tuberositas localization are helpful to early diagnosis. Furthermore, JKY-Muscle Rehabilitation Instrument is invented for non-operative therapy. It enhances muscle power by selective training of the vastus medialis muscle using electrical stimulator to relieve pain and correct subluxation of patella with 90% efficiency (63% of excellent-effective rate). In late stage, patellofemoral replacement is recommended. The excellent-effective rate is 86.3%.

RESUMO

Trichosanthes kirilowii lectin 1 (TKL-1) isolated from the tuber of T. kirilowii consists of two chains, each with a molecular weight of about 30 kDa. It has immunological properties which are similar to some ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs). TKL-1 was crystallized in space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) and diffraction data were collected to 2.7 A resolution. The molecular-replacement method was applied to solve the structure, using different chains of ricin, abrin-a and trichosanthin as search models. A set of consistent solutions was further verified by R(omit) profile analysis. In addition, the spatial arrangement of the two chains of TKL-1 is identical to that of type 2 RIPs.

RESUMO

AIM: To study the effect of magnesium lithospermate B (MLB) on the lipid peroxidation and on its free radical scavenging activity. METHODS: MLB was incubated in rat tissue homogenate or in a free radical generating system. MLB induced inhibition of lipid peroxidation and its scavenging activity on superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals was studied using colorimetric estimation. RESULTS: MLB inhibited the lipid peroxidation induced by either an auto-oxidant or Fe2+/VitC in vitro, in the liver homogenate, the inhibitory rate of MLB (10 mg/L) being 69.2% and 57.7%, respectively. MLB (25 and 50 mg/kg) decreased the amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in rat serum, liver, kidney, and heart. However, it did not inhibit the lipid peroxidation of brain homogenate ex vivo. MLB scavenged superoxide anions generated from xanthine/xanthine oxidase system and iron-dependent hydroxyl radicals. CONCLUSION: MLB is an inhibitor of lipid peroxidation and scavenge superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals both in vitro and ex vivo.
