RESUMO

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), a drug-resistant Gram-negative pathogen, is listed among the "critical" group of pathogens by the World Health Organization urgently needing efficacious antibiotics in the clinics. Nanomaterials especially silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) due to the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity are tested in antimicrobial therapeutic applications. Pathogens rapidly develop resistance to AgNPs; however, the health threat from antibiotic-resistant pathogens remains challenging. Here we present a strategy to prevent bacterial resistance to silver nanomaterials through imparting chirality to silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). Nonchiral AgNCs with high efficacy against P. aeruginosa causes heritable resistance, as indicated by a 5.4-fold increase in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) after 9 repeated passages. Whole-genome sequencing identifies a Rhs mutation related to the wall of Gram-negative bacteria that possibly causes morphology changes in resistance compared to susceptible P. aeruginosa. Nevertheless, AgNCs with laevorotary chirality (l-AgNCs) induce negligible resistance even after 40 repeated passages and maintain a superior antibacterial efficiency at the MIC. l-AgNCs also show high cytocompatibility; negligible cytotoxicity to mammalian cells including JB6, H460, HEK293, and RAW264.7 is observed even at 30-fold MIC. l-AgNCs thus are examined as an alternative to levofloxacin in vivo, healing wound infections of P. aeruginosa efficaciously. This work provides a potential opportunity to confront the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance by developing chiral nanoclusters.

RESUMO

Precise control of circulating lipids is instrumental in health and disease. Bulk lipids, carried by specialized lipoproteins, are secreted into the circulation, initially via the coat protein complex II (COPII). How the universal COPII machinery accommodates the abundant yet unconventional lipoproteins remains unclear, let alone its therapeutic translation. Here we report that COPII uses manganese-tuning, self-constrained condensation to selectively drive lipoprotein delivery and set lipid homeostasis in vivo. Serendipitously, adenovirus hijacks the condensation-based transport mechanism, thus enabling the identification of cytosolic manganese as an unexpected control signal. Manganese directly binds the inner COPII coat and enhances its condensation, thereby shifting the assembly-versus-dynamics balance of the transport machinery. Manganese can be mobilized from mitochondria stores to signal COPII, and selectively controls lipoprotein secretion with a distinctive, bell-shaped function. Consequently, dietary titration of manganese enables tailored lipid management that counters pathological dyslipidaemia and atherosclerosis, implicating a condensation-targeting strategy with broad therapeutic potential for cardio-metabolic health.

RESUMO

As global warming progresses, heat waves are becoming increasingly frequent and intense, meanwhile the incidence of heat stroke (HS) has increased sharply during the past decades. HS is typically associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and there is an urgent need for further research to solve this difficult issue. There currently exists difficulties regarding on-site emergency treatment methods and limited in-hospital treatment approaches, and better treatments are required as soon as possible. Theories and therapies from various traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) academic groups have been widely reported. Therefore, an exploration of prevention and protection methods should consider TCM experiences as an alternative. This article primarily reviews TCM herbal therapies and external therapies that have been described in various clinical reports and demonstrated in relevant studies. Herbal therapies, including herbal formulas, Chinese patent medicines (CPMs), single Chinese herbs, and associated extracts or monomers, are summarized based on the shared perspectives of the underlying mechanisms from TCM. In addition, external therapies including acupuncture, bloodletting, cupping, Gua sha and Tui na that have rarely been rarely mentioned and considered in most cases, are introduced and discussed to offer a unique perspective in the search for novel interventions for HS. In summary, TCM may provide abundant potential clinical benefits and research directions in the fight against HS.

RESUMO

Improving the technical performance of related industrial products is an efficient strategy to reducing the application quantities and environmental burden for toxic chemicals. A novel polyfluoroalkyl surfactant potassium 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4-octafluoro-4-(perfluorobutoxy)butane-1-sulfonate(F404) was synthesized by a commercializable route. It had a surface tension(γ) of 18.2 mN/m at the critical micelle concentration(CMC, 1.04 g/L), significantly lower than that of perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS, ca. 33.0 mN/m, 0.72 g/L), and exhibited remarkable suppression of chromium-fog at a dose half that of PFOS. The half maximal inhibitory concentration(IC50) values in HepG2 cells and the lethal concentration of 50%(LC50) in zebrafish embryos after 72 hpf indicated a lower toxicity for F404 in comparison to PFOS. In a UV/sulphite system, 89.3% of F404 were decomposed after 3 h, representing a defluorination efficiency of 43%. The cleavage of the ether C-O bond during the decomposition would be expected to form a short chain·C4F9 as the position of the ether C-O in the F404 fluorocarbon chains is C4-O5. The ether unit is introduced in the perfluoroalkyl chain to improve water solubility, biocompatibility and degradation, thereby minimizing the environmental burden. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: For sigmoid colon or rectal cancer, a definite consensus regarding the optimal level ligating the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) has not been reached. We performed this study to determine whether the ligation level significantly affected short-term and long-term outcomes of patients with sigmoid colon or rectal cancer after curative laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: Medical records of patients with sigmoid colon or rectal cancer who had undergone curative laparoscopic surgery between January 2008 and December 2014 at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine were reviewed. Then, the high tie group (HTG) was compared with the low tie group (LTG) in terms of short-term and long-term outcomes. RESULTS: Five-hundred ninety patients were included. No significant differences between two groups regarding baseline characteristics existed. HTG had a significantly higher risk of anastomotic fistula than LTG (21/283 vs 11/307, P = 0.040). Additionally, high ligation was proven by multivariate logistic regression analysis to be an independent factor for anastomotic fistula (P = 0.038, OR = 2.232, 95% CI: 1.047-4.758). Furthermore, LT resulted in better preserved urinary function. However, LTG was not significantly different from HTG regarding operative time (P = 0.075), blood transfusion (P = 1.000), estimated blood loss (P = 0.239), 30-day mortality (P = 1.000), ICU stay (P = 0.674), postoperative hospital stay (days) (P = 0.636), bowel obstruction (P = 0.659), ileus (P = 0.637), surgical site infection (SSI) (P = 0.121), number of retrieved lymph nodes (P = 0.501), and number of metastatic lymph nodes (P = 0.131). Subsequently, it was revealed that level of IMA ligation did not significantly influence overall survival (OS) (P = 0.474) and relapse-free survival (RFS) (P = 0.722). Additionally, it was revealed that ligation level did not significantly affect OS (P = 0.460) and RFS (P = 0.979) of patients with stage 1 cancer, which was also observed among patients with stage 2 or stage 3 cancer. Ultimately, ligation level was not an independent predictive factor for either OS or RFS. CONCLUSIONS: HT resulted in a significantly higher incidence of anastomotic fistula and worse preservation of urinary function. Level of IMA ligation did not significantly affect long-term outcomes of patients with sigmoid colon or rectal cancer after curative laparoscopic surgery.

RESUMO

SCOPE: The beneficial effects of probiotics in reducing gastrointestinal inflammation and in preventing colorectal cancer have been reported, but the mechanism underlying the immunomodulatory effect of probiotics in inhibiting extra-intestinal tumor progression remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study shows that probiotic supplementation attenuate lung metastasis of melanoma cells in mice. Feeding mice with VSL#3 probiotics change the composition and proportion of gut microbiota. The changes in gut bacteria composition, such as in the abundance of Lachnospiraceae, Streptococcus, and Lachnoclostridium, are associated with the production of short-chain fatty acids in the gut. The concentrations of propionate and butyrate are upregulated in gut and blood after feeding VSL#3, and the increase in propionate and butyrate levels promotes the expression of chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 20 (CCL20) in lung endothelial cells and the recruitment of T helper 17 (Th17) cells to the lungs via the CCL20/chemokine receptor 6 axis. The recruitment of Th17 cells decreases the number of tumor foci in lungs and attenuates the lung metastasis of melanoma cells in mice. CONCLUSIONS: The results provide new information on the role and mechanisms of action of probiotics in attenuating extra-intestinal tumor metastasis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery has been widely accepted to treat early-stage gastric cancer. However, it is still controversial to perform laparoscopic gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy for locally advanced gastric cancer. We performed the present study to compare the long-term outcomes of patients after laparoscopic or open gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy. METHODS: The clinicopathological data of 182 gastric cancer patients receiving gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy between January 2011 and December 2015 at Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital were retrospectively retrieved. The overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of these 182 patients were compared. Then, the prognostic significance of positive lymph node ratio (LNR) was assessed. RESULTS: As a whole, OS (P = 0.789) and DFS (P = 0.672) of patients receiving laparoscopic gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy were not significantly different from those of patients receiving open surgery. For stage I patients, laparoscopic gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy was not significantly different from open surgery in terms of OS (P = 0.573) and DFS (P = 0.157). Similarly, for stage II patients, laparoscopic gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy was not significantly different from open surgery in terms of OS (P = 0.567) and DFS (P = 0.830). For stage III patients, laparoscopic gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy was not significantly different from open surgery in terms of OS (P = 0.773) and DFS (P = 0.404). Laparoscopic or open gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy was not proven by Cox regression analysis to be an independent prognostic factor for OS and DFS. High LNR was significantly associated with worse OS (P < 0.001) and DFS (P < 0.001). Surgical type did not significantly affect prognosis of patients with low LNR or survival of patients with high LNR. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with gastric cancer, laparoscopic gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy was not inferior to open surgery in terms of long-term outcomes. LNR is a useful prognostic marker for GC patients.

RESUMO

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), chemicals frequently used in agriculture, are a group of highly toxic and persistent organic pollutants. This study assesses the distribution and congener profiles of residual OCPs in 11 types of vegetable oils collected from Chinese markets. All samples were extracted using the modified QuEChERS method prior to analysis by gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The sesame oil samples had the highest concentration of OCPs, within the range of 15.30-59.38 ng/g, whereas the peanut oil samples had the lowest OCP concentrations, within the range of 10.83-35.65 ng/g. The possible effect of the processing technology on the pesticide residues in these vegetable oils was also evaluated. It was found that the pressing method leaves more OCPs in vegetable oils than the aqueous extraction and cold-pressing, but the result for leaching was not obvious. In light of the obtained results, it was estimated that the average daily intake of different pesticides is between 0.01 and 2.20 ng/kg bw/day for urban and rural households. Hence, it can be affirmed that, given the amount of the concentration of OCPs detected in the vegetable oils collected from Chinese markets, there are no obvious health risks for urban and rural households by intake.

RESUMO

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are organic pollutants that have caused widespread concerns in recent years. Because of their lipophilic characteristics, CPs may enter into the body through diet or other routes and exert adverse effects on human health. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and congener profiles of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) in 176 cooking oils and 19 oil containers collected from various markets in China. The concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs in cooking oils were in the range of not detected (ND) to 16,055 ng/g and ND to 11,612 ng/g, respectively, and the geomean concentrations of MCCPs were lower than those of SCCPs. The concentrations of CPs in sesame oil, rapeseed oil, and camellia oil were higher than those in other types of oils, and different oil processing methods had different effects on the presence of CPs in the oils. CPs were detected in 5 out of 20 oil containers, although their concentrations were much lower than those detected in the oil samples, indicating that containers are not the main sources of CPs detected in the oils. The mean SCCP and MCCP intakes through cooking oils of the general Chinese population were 8.83 and 6.09 µg/kg/d, respectively.

RESUMO

Yogurt is a popular product worldwide partly because of the health-promoting effects of the probiotics that it contains. Probiotics with high survivability constitute a promising direction for fortified yogurt products. This study aimed to prepare Bifidobacterium breve-loaded yogurt with the bacteria surviving transit to the lower part of small intestine or colon. Bifidobacterium breve beads were prepared through an ion-crosslinking method using low methoxyl pectin as the encapsulating material. Features such as encapsulation efficiency and stability during storage and passage through the simulated gastrointestinal tract were studied in vitro. A commercial starter was used for yogurt fermentation, and B. breve with or without encapsulation was added as a probiotic supplement with the starter or 3 to 4 h after fermentation. The effects of B. breve beads on yogurt characteristics were evaluated after different fermentation processes: BC, milk fermented with marketed yogurt starter; UBFF, unencapsulated B. breve added to fresh milk and then fermented; EBFF, encapsulated B. breve added to fresh milk and then fermented; UBAF, unencapsulated B. breve added after fermentation with the starter; and EBAF, encapsulated B. breve beads added 3 to 4 h after fermentation with the starter. Evaluation was based on texture, electronic nose, and electronic tongue analyses. The particle size analysis of B. breve beads showed that they were uniform, mostly spherical, 1 to 1.5 mm in diameter with encapsulating efficiency higher than 99%. Following treatment with the simulated gastrointestinal tract conditions, the number of B. breve decreased by 1.76 and 4.82 log cfu/g for B. breve beads and unencapsulated B. breve, respectively. The EBAF group showed the lowest viscosity (2,235.67 cP) at d 0, and the lower postfermentation degree was reflected by the slow increase in yogurt viscosity. All groups kept a relatively stable pH during storage. The cohesiveness values of the EBAF and UBAF groups were significantly higher than those of the other groups. The trends in texture changes within the BC, UBFF, and EBFF groups were similar, and the UBAF and EBAF groups showed similar trends. In conclusion, B. breve beads showed good stability in vitro and improved yogurt characteristics by increasing the survival rate of the encapsulated cells. Good compatibility of low methoxyl pectin beads with yogurt was also observed.

RESUMO

Yinhua Miyanling Tablet (YMT), the Chinese formula, has long been administrated in clinical practice for the treatment of acute pyelonephritis and acute urocystitis. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of YMT in vitro and to evaluate the association between anti-inflammation and innate immune response. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated using Ficoll density gradient centrifugation and then were stimulated by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The differential gene expression of inflammation-related genes after drug administration was assessed using PCR array, and the protein levels of differential genes were measured by ELISA and Western blot. The result showed that YMT significantly inhibited the expression of NLRP3, Caspase-1, and the downstream cytokine IL-1ß and suppressed the production of inflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, and MCP-1 in a dose-dependent manner compared to the LPS group (P < 0.01). The finding indicated that YMT exhibited anti-inflammatory effect in vitro by suppressing the NLRP3/Caspase-1 inflammasome, and that may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

RESUMO

Both internal carbon source and some external carbon sources were used to improve the nutrient removal in Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic-Membrane Bioreactor (A2/O-MBRs), and their technical and cost analysis was investigated. The experimental results showed that the nutrient removals were improved by all the carbon source additions. The total nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency were higher in the experiments with external carbon source additions than that with internal carbon source addition. It was found that pathways of nitrogen and phosphorus transform were different dependent on different carbon source additions by the mass balance analysis. With external carbon source addition, the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification occurred in aerobic zone, and the P-uptake in aerobic phase was evident. Therefore, with addition of C-MHP (internal carbon source produced from sludge pretreatment by microwave-H2O2 process), the denitrification and phosphorus-uptake in anoxic zone was notable. Cost analysis showed that the unit nitrogen removal costs were 57.13CNY/kg N of C-acetate addition and 54.48CNY/kgN of C-MHP addition, respectively. The results indicated that the C-MHP has a good technical and economic feasibility to substitute external carbon sources partially for nutrient removal.

RESUMO

Microwave (MW) hybrid processes are able to disrupt the flocculent structure of complex waste activated sludge, and help promote the recovery of phosphorus as struvite. In this study, to optimize struvite yield, (1) the characteristics of matter released in MW-hybrid treatments were compared, including MW, MW-acid, MW-alkali, MW-H2O2, and MW-H2O2-alkali. The results showed that selective release of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, Ca(2+), and Mg(2+) achieved by sludge pretreatment using MW-hybrid processes. MW-H2O2 is the recommended sludge pretreatment process for phosphorus recovery in the form of struvite. The ratio of Mg(2+):NH4(+)-N:PO4(3-)-P was 1.2:2.9:1 in the supernatant. (2) To clarify the effects of organic matter on struvite recovery, the composition and molecular weight distribution of organic matters were analyzed. Low molecular weight COD was found to facilitate the removal rate of NH4(+)-N and PO4(3)-P via crystallization, and the amorphous struvite crystals (<1kDa) from the filtered solutions had high purity. Therefore, the present study reveals the necessity of taking into consideration the interference effect of high molecular weight organic matters during struvite crystallization from sewage sludge.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of nicotine intake on bone microstructure, bone biomechanics, and oxidative stress state in rats. METHODS: Thirty-six 6-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats (weight, 160-180 g) were randomly divided into control group, low dose group, and high dose group, 12 rats each group. The rats in high dose group and low dose group were given respectively 6.0 mg/kg and 0.4 mg/kg nicotine gavage intervention for 12 months; no intervention was made in the control group. The survival of rats was observed during experiment, and the weight of rats was measured every month. At 12 months after modeling, the L1 vertebral body was harvested to measure the bone mineral density (BMD), bone volume fraction (BVF), trabecular thickness (TT), trabecular number (TN), and trabecular spacing (TS) by Micro-CT three-dimensional reconstruction; the left femur was harvested for biomechanical tests of maximal load, stiffness, and the maximal fracture energy; and arterial blood was extracted to measure the malonyldialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and cotinine. RESULTS: During the experiment, two rats and one rat were added in the high dose group and the low dose group because of death, and no death in the control group. The body weight of the rats in the high and low dose groups gradually decreased with time when compared with one in the control group, and significant difference was found between two dose groups and the control group at 8-12 months (P<0.05); the body weight of the high dose group was significantly lower than that of the low dose group at 11 and 12 months (P<0.05). At 12 months after modeling, BMD, BVF, TT, and TN were significantly lower in the high dose group than the control group and the low dose group, but TS was significantly increased (P<0.05). Difference in BVF, TN, and TS was significant between the low dose group and the control group (P<0.05). The maximal load, stiffness, and maximal fracture energy of femoral shaft were significantly lower in the high dose group than the control group and the low dose group, and in the low dose group than the control group (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the levels of cotinine and MDA were significantly increased, and the levels of CAT and SOD were significantly decreased in the high and low dose groups (P<0.05), and there were significant differences between the high and low dose groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Nicotine intake can cause micro-structural changes of the bone, decreased bone mechanical properties, and imbalance of oxidation-antioxidant levels in rats. High-dose nicotine intake may be one of the causes of osteoporosis.

RESUMO

An ultra performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS) was used in the structural determination of natural compounds in Gastrodia elata. A total of 64 compounds were identified or tentatively characterized. The strategy used for characterization was comparing their retention time and fragmentation behaviors with those of the reference standards, or investigating their accurate mass measurements and characteristic fragmentation patterns followed by low-energy collision dissociation tandem mass spectrometry (CID-MS/MS). Phenolic conjugates mainly underwent consecutive losses of gastrodin residues and combined losses of H2O and CO2 from their citric acid units under negative MS/MS conditions. According to these rules, we have successfully characterized fifteen potential novel compounds. To confirm the reliability of this strategy, two targeted unknown trace parishins were obtained from G. elata by LC/MS-guided isolation. Based on the analysis of data from NMR spectroscopy and other techniques, the two unknown parishins were identified as 2-[4-O-(ß-d-glucopyranosyl)benzyl]-3-methyl-citrate (parishin J) and 1,2-di-[4-O-(ß-d-glucopyranosyl)benzyl]-3-methyl-citrate (parishin K), respectively. The fully established structures were consistent with the MS-oriented structural elucidation. This study expanded our knowledge on parishins in Gastrodia species, and the proposed strategy was proven efficient and reliable in the discovery of new minor compounds from herbal extracts.

RESUMO

Although hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) was recently proposed as a candidate persistent organic pollutant (POP) under the Stockholm Convention, information about its environmental levels and distributions is still very limited. In this work, HCBD was determined in the sewage sludge from 37 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in 23 cities and 17 soils near a chemical plant in China. Three chlorobenzenes (CBs) (1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene, and hexachlorobenzene) were simultaneously studied to help better understand the environmental behavior of HCBD. Concentrations of HCBD in sludge samples ranged from <0.03 to 74.3 ng/g dry weight (dw) with a median value of 0.30 ng/g dw, which was lower than those of the three CBs. Levels of HCBD were not correlated with capacity of the WWTPs and total organic carbon. For soils, high level of HCBD was found in the sample within the plant, with a rapid decreasing concentration trend with the increase of distance from the plant. It was suspected that releasing as a byproduct during manufacturing of chlorinated chemicals was the primary source of HCBD in the studied location. Further risk assessment indicated that the environmental risk of HCBD to soil organisms and the health risk to employees were very low through soil exposure within the plant.

RESUMO

Ganoderma atrum has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. In this study, the antitumor activity of a novel G. atrum polysaccharide (PSG-1) was investigated in vitro and in vivo using S180 tumor-bearing mice. The results showed that PSG-1 significantly inhibited the proliferation of S180 via the activation of macrophages in a dose-dependent manner. PSG-1-primed macrophages exhibited a higher tumoricidal activity than untreated macrophages. Administration of PSG-1 significantly inhibited the growth of transplantable sarcoma S180-bearing mice and increased macrophage phagocytosis and the levels of cytokines and nitride oxide. Expression of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 in the membrane was markedly increased in PSG-1-treated groups, suggesting that it may be a possible receptor for PSG-1. PSG-1 also promoted the translocation of the p65 subunit of NF-κB from cytosol to nucleus and the degradation of IκBα. Moreover, the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase in macrophages was improved by PSG-1 in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, it is suggested that PSG-1 may elicit its antitumor effect by improving immune system functions through TLR4-mediated NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways.

RESUMO

A microwave-H2O2 process for sludge pretreatment exhibited high efficiencies of releasing organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus, but large quantities of H2O2 residues were detected. A uniform design method was thus employed in this study to further optimize H2O2 dosage by investigating effects of pH and H2O2 dosage on the amount of H2O2 residue and releases of organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus. A regression model was established with pH and H2O2 dosage as the independent variables, and H2O2 residue and releases of organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus as the dependent variables. In the optimized microwave-H2O2 process, the pH value of the sludge was firstly adjusted to 11.0, then the sludge was heated to 80 degrees C and H2O2 was dosed at a H2O2:mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) ratio of 0.2, and the sludge was finally heated to 100 degrees C by microwave irradiation. Compared to the microwave-H2O2 process without optimization, the H2O2 dosage and the utilization rate of H2O2 in the optimized microwave-H2O2 process were reduced by 80% and greatly improved by 3.87 times, respectively, when the H2O2:MLSS dosage ratio was decreased from 1.0 to 0.2, resulting in nearly the same release rate of soluble chemical oxygen demand in the microwave-H2O2 process without optimization at H2O2:MLSS ratio of 0.5.

RESUMO

In this study, the releases of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus from sludge treated by microwave irradiation were investigated by batch experiments at two microwave energy inputs (MEIs), 54 kJ and 108 kJ. The final temperatures of the treated samples at these two MEIs were about 56 degrees C and 90 degrees C, respectively. Results showed that the higher MEI was more helpful to release TC, TOC, TN and TP from sludge treated by microwave. The release rates of TC, TN and TP were doubled at the MEI of 108 kJ than that of 54 kJ, and their highest rates were 5.26%, 22.06% and 33.15%, respectively. The MLSS significantly affected releases of TOC, TC, TN, NH4+ -N, TP and ortho-PO4(3-). However, the microwave power (MWP) had no significant effect on these releases except IC. The normalization of these parameters, representing the energy efficiencies of treating sludge, clearly showed that the P (TP) was the highest and the P(IC) was the lowest. However, the average values of P(IC), P(NH4+ -N) and P(ortho-PO4(3-)) decreased at the same MISS concentration, respectively, about 67%, 73% and 56% when the MEI doubled from 54 kJ to 108 kJ.
