BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is a global health concern with an increasing prevalence worldwide. Lycium barbarum (L. barbarum) is widely used as a medicinal and functional food, and evidence suggests that it may be beneficial for lipid management. In this study, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of L. barbarum supplementation on lipid profiles in adults. METHODS: PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Wanfang Database were searched from inception until October 2022. The random-effect model was applied, and the pooled effect sizes were expressed as mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: The meta-analysis of 5 randomized controlled trials involving 259 subjects indicated that L. barbarum supplementation significantly decreased the triglyceride (TG) concentration (MD: 0.14 mmol/L, 95% CI: 0.08-0.20) and increased the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration (HDL-C) (MD: -0.07 mmol/L, 95% CI: -0.13 to -0.01). However, the reductions in total cholesterol (TC) concentration (MD: 0.11 mmol/L, 95% CI: -0.37 to 0.59) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration (MD: 0.21 mmol/L, 95% CI: -0.46 to 0.89) were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that L. barbarum supplementation might have some beneficial effects on TG and HDL-C concentrations in adults, and L. barbarum fruit has an even greater effect on TG and HDL-C concentrations. Considering the sensitivity analyses and limitations of the study included, further large-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy involves breathing pure oxygen or a high oxygen concentration above atmospheric (ATM) pressure in an enclosed chamber. Studies on pathological scars have demonstrated that HBO can inhibit the formation of pathological scars. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of HBO in the treatment of pathological scars via meta-analysis. METHODS: Searches were run on various databases, including the Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and CNKI databases. A comparative study was conducted on patients with pathological scars treated with or without HBO. We used RevMan 5.4 software to determine the recurrence rate, treatment satisfaction, and Vancouver Scar Scale(VSS) score in the pathological scar. RESULTS: A total of 543 publications were identified; after screening, four were selected for review, including one randomized controlled trial (RCT), one controlled clinical trial (CCT), and two retrospective cohort studies. Meta-analysis results showed that HBO treatment reduced the pathological scar recurrence rate after surgery and radiotherapy (OR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.13-0.52, p = 0.0001). Patients had higher satisfaction after HBO therapy (OR = 4.45, 95% CI: 1.49-13.30, p = 0.007). The Vancouver scar scale (VSS) score of patients with pathological scars was significantly improved in the HBO group (SMD: -3.82, 95% CI: -6.07to -0.49, p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: HBO treatment decreased the recurrence rate of pathological scars after surgery and radiotherapy, increased patient satisfaction, and reduced the VSS score, thus providing a new way to treat pathological scar hyperplasia. However, evaluation of the longer-term effects of HBO treatment requires further comprehensive studies, including more RCTs.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Lycium barbarum L. are widely used as medicinal and functional food and may be particularly beneficial for patients with dyslipidemia. This systematic review protocol is designed to be used to evaluate the effects of Lycium barbarum L. on plasma lipid concentration through systematic reviews and meta-analysis. METHODS: The Following electronic databases will be searched from inception to October 2021: the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Wan-fang database. All randomized controlled trial designs evaluated the effects of Lycium barbarum L. on plasma concentrations of lipids will be included. Two researchers will operate literature retrieval, screening, information extraction, quality assessment, and data analysis independently. The analysis will be conducted using Rstudio software (Version 1.4.1717). RESULTS: The findings will be submitted to a peer-reviewed publication. CONCLUSION: This study will provide practical and targeted evidence in investigating the impact of Lycium barbarum L. on plasma lipid concentration in adults. Roofs and roads, accounting for a large portion of the urban impervious land surface, have contributed significantly to urban nonpoint pollution. In this study, in Beijing, China, roof and road runoff are sampled to measure the suspended solids (SS), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contained in particles with different sizes. The SS content in the road runoff (151.59 mg/L) was sevenfold that in the roof runoff (21.13 mg/L, p < 0.05). The SS contained more coarse particulates in the roof runoff than in road runoff. The small particulates in the range of 0.45-50 µm consisted of 59 % SS in the roof runoff and 94 % SS in the road runoff. P was mainly attached to particle sizes of 10-50 µm in the roof (73 %) and road (48 %) runoffs, while N was mainly in a dissolved phase state in both runoffs. So, the different associations of N and P raise a challenge in preventing stormwater pollution in urban environments.

To understand the pollution character of urban road runoff, the concentrations of TSS, EC, N and P in the ring road runoff of Beijing from June to September 2013 were evaluated, the correlations among pollutants were examined, and the load of TSS, N and P were estimated. Result showed that the small particulates in the range of 1-10 µm consisted of 60% TSS in the road runoff. Totally 89 percent of the nitrogen (N) was dissolved phase state in the road runoff, 80 percent of the phosphorus (P) was particular phase state in the road runoff. Based on the characteristics of correlations between EC, TSS and TN, TP, EC and TSS were the surrogate indexes of pollution degree assessment for the dissolved N and particulate P in the urban road runoff, respectively. Based on our results, the SS, N and P year load per unit area in Beijing ring road runoff were 16 725.69, 1777.91 and 24.23 mg x (m2 x a)(-1), respectively. Our findings described the polutant wash off character in urban road runoff, which provide a scientific basis for management of nonpoint pollution in a city and an alternative method for controlling pollution.

This study focuses on the role of amino acids in xylem sap of tomato grown in hydroponics in a medium supplemented with a series of concentration of La and Y. Eighteen amino acids in xylem saps were identified and measured by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The main amino acids in xylem sap samples of the tomato are histidine, tryptophan, aspartic acid, and glutamic acid. The concentration of glutamic acid in xylem sap significantly increased in the La and Y treatment compared to the control. By analyzing the correlation between concentrations of amino acids and concentrations of La and Y in the xylem saps, we considered that the glutamic acid in xylem saps seemed to participate in the long-distance La and Y translocation processes, and histidine did not relate to xylem La and Y transport of tomato. The role of other amino acids which was excreted by tomato has not been demonstrated in the long-distance transport of La and Y in the xylem.
