Objective: Our aim was to analyze the effect of refined specialized nursing intervention in elderly patients with diabetes and concurrent pulmonary infection and the impact on patients' conditions and outcomes. Methods: Clinical data from 87 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) complicated by pulmonary infection treated in Lishui Municipal Central Hospital in China from February 2021 to February 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients conformed to complete inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were divided into a control group (n=43) and an observation group (n=44) based on the nursing intervention they received. The control group received routine nursing intervention, while the observation group received refined specialized nursing intervention. The nursing intervention effects, hospitalization duration, disease knowledge acquisition, blood glucose indicators (fasting plasma glucose [FPG], 2-hour postprandial glucose [2hPG]), inflammatory marker indicators (C-reactive protein [CRP], heparin-binding protein [HBP]) levels, comfort levels and nursing satisfaction were compared between the 2 groups. Results: (1) Nursing intervention effect and hospitalization duration: The observation group showed significantly higher overall intervention effectiveness and notably shorter hospital stays compared with the control group (P < .05). (2) Disease knowledge acquisition and blood glucose indicator levels: Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in disease knowledge acquisition, FPG or 2hPG levels between the 2 groups (P > .05); after the intervention, the observation group exhibited significantly higher disease knowledge acquisition and lower FPG and 2hPG levels than the control group (P < .05). (3) Inflammatory marker indicator levels: Prior to the intervention, there were no significant differences in CRP or HBP levels between the 2 groups (P > .05); post-intervention, the observation group showed markedly lower CRP and HBP levels compared with the control group (P < .05). (4) Comfort levels: Prior to the intervention, there were no significant differences in physiological, psychological, environmental or social comfort scores between the 2 groups (P > .05); after the intervention, the observation group exhibited significantly higher scores in all comfort aspects compared with the control group (P < .05). (5) Nursing satisfaction: Nursing satisfaction in the control group was 74.42%, while in the observation group it was 90.91%, indicating significantly higher nursing satisfaction in the observation group (P < .05). Conclusion: Refined specialized nursing intervention significantly improved outcomes in elderly patients with diabetes and concurrent pulmonary infection. Compared with routine nursing intervention, refined specialized nursing intervention remarkably enhanced patient comfort during hospitalization, improved disease knowledge acquisition, rapidly adjusted blood glucose levels and reduced systemic inflammatory response, facilitating better patient recovery. Moreover, it moderately enhanced satisfaction for patients and their families, holding significant implications for promoting harmonious doctor-patient relationships, hence advocating for its clinical dissemination.

This study aimed to explore the effects and mechanisms of maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and selenium (Se) deficiency on the growth and glucose metabolism of offspring. Female C57BL/6J mice were divided into four groups as follows: a control group, a GDM group, a Se deficiency group, and a GDM with Se deficiency group. GDM animal models were established via S961. Pregnant mice fed their offspring until weaning. Then, offspring continued to be fed with a basic diet until adulthood. Body weight and fasting blood glucose were measured weekly. Se content, oxidative stress indicators, and the protein expression of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway were detected. GDM increased susceptibility to obesity in lactating offspring, with gender differences observed in adult offspring. The effect of Se deficiency on SOD activity only appeared in female offspring during adulthood but was shown in male offspring during weaning though it disappeared during adulthood. GDM and Se deficiency increased the risk of abnormal glucose metabolism in female offspring from weaning to adulthood but gradually decreased in male offspring. The influence on the expression of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway-related proteins showed the same trend. GDM and Se deficiency affected the growth and glucose metabolism of offspring through oxidative stress and PI3K/Akt signaling pathway-related proteins, and gender differences existed.

BACKGROUND: Depression is the most common mental disorder, affecting about 3.8% of the population worldwide. Clinical symptoms of depression include sadness, anxiety and frequent mood swings, among others. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), psychotherapy and behavioral therapy are commonly used for the treatment of this condition. Since SSRIs are associated with various side effects, extract of St. John's wort (SJW) has been suggested as an effective alternative. However, there are conflicting studies regarding its efficacy. Many studies have reported positive outcomes with low adverse effects, while others did not find it to be a suitable alternative. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the available studies using SJW for depression therapy and to thoroughly evaluate its effectiveness compared to SSRIs and placebo. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Relevant articles for our meta-analysis were found using Medline (via PubMed), Cinahl (via EBSCO), Scopus, and Web of Sciences databases. Studies were included as per the predefined Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes and Study (PICOS) criteria. A demographic summary of the patients treated with either SJW, placebo or SSRIs was collected and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores were extracted. Risks of bias analysis, diagnostic odds ratio (OR), risk ratio (RR), and sensitivity calculation were evaluated using Revman software, and the publication bias was assessed using MedCalc software. RESULTS: Fourteen clinical trials with a total of 2270 depression patients were included in accordance with the inclusion criteria. All analyzed papers were published between 2000 and 2022. For patients treated with either SSRIs or SJW, a pooled OR of 2.44 with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of 1.33-4.45 was obtained. The data were heterogeneous, with a tau2 value of 0.54, χ2 value of 31.05, degrees of freedom (df) value of 7, I2 value of 77%, and an overall Z-value of 2.90 with p = 0.004. CONCLUSION: Our research supports the use of SJW as it reduced the number of depressive patients and their HAMD scores while having fewer risks and side effects than conventional medications.

This study demonstrated the combination of black pepper and a canola oil-based emulsion synergistically enhanced carotenoid bioavailability of raw vegetables in humans. In a randomized crossover design, healthy young adults consumed (1) vegetable salad (control), (2) salad with canola oil emulsion (COE), (3) salad with black pepper (BP), and (4) salad with canola oil emulsion and black pepper (COE + BP). COE + BP led to a higher AUC0-10h of total plasma carotenoids (p < 0.0005) than the control (6.1-fold), BP (2.1-fold), and COE (3.0-fold). COE + BP increased AUC0-10h of plasma lutein, α-carotene, ß-carotene, and lycopene by 4.8, 9.7, 7.6, and 5.5-fold than the control, respectively (p < 0.0001). COE + BP produced a significant synergy in increasing both Cmax and AUC0-10h of total carotenoids, α-carotene, ß-carotene, and lycopene. Moreover, COE + BP produced a stronger enhancement on AUC0-10h of total carotenoids, α-carotene, ß-carotene, and lycopene in females than in males.

Prunus mume is a traditional ornamental plant, which owed a unique floral scent. However, the diversity of the floral scent in P. mume cultivars with different aroma types was not identified. In this study, the floral scent of eight P. mume cultivars was studied using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and organic solvent extraction (OSE), combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In total, 66 headspace volatiles and 74 endogenous extracts were putatively identified, of which phenylpropanoids/benzenoids were the main volatile organic compounds categories. As a result of GC-MS analysis, benzyl acetate (1.55-61.26%), eugenol (0.87-6.03%), benzaldehyde (5.34-46.46%), benzyl alcohol (5.13-57.13%), chavicol (0-5.46%), and cinnamyl alcohol (0-6.49%) were considered to be the main components in most varieties. However, the volatilization rate of these main components was different. Based on the variable importance in projection (VIP) values in the orthogonal partial least-squares discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA), differential components of four aroma types were identified as biomarkers, and 10 volatile and 12 endogenous biomarkers were screened out, respectively. The odor activity value (OAV) revealed that several biomarkers, including (Z)-2-hexen-1-ol, pentyl acetate, (E)-cinnamaldehyde, methyl salicylate, cinnamyl alcohol, and benzoyl cyanide, contributed greatly to the strong-scented, fresh-scented, sweet-scented, and light-scented types of P. mume cultivars. This study provided a theoretical basis for the floral scent evaluation and breeding of P. mume cultivars.

METHODS: PubMed Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine disc, VIP, and Wanfang databases were searched. The primary outcome was treatment response. The secondary outcomes included changes in clinical and laboratory indicators and incidence of AP-related complications. Meta-analyses were performed by using a random-effect model. Risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) or weighted mean differences (WMDs) with 95% CIs were calculated. RESULTS: Overall, 23 RCTs were included. The rates of overall (RR = 1.16; 95% CI = 1.12 to 1.20; P < 0.00001) and complete (RR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.30 to 1.50; P < 0.00001) responses were significantly higher in the Xuebijing injection group. After treatment, the levels of interleukin-6 (WMD = -18.22; 95% CI = -23.36 to -13.08; P < 0.00001), tumor necrosis factor-α (WMD = -16.44; 95% CI = -20.49 to -12.40; P < 0.00001), serum amylase (WMD = -105.61; 95% CI = -173.77 to -37.46; P=0.002), white blood cell (WMD = -1.51; 95% CI = -1.66 to -1.36; P < 0.00001), and C-reactive protein (WMD = -11.05; 95% CI = -14.32 to -7.78; P < 0.00001) were significantly lower in the Xuebijing injection group. Abdominal pain (WMD = -1.74; 95% CI = -1.96 to -1.52; P < 0.00001), abdominal distension (WMD = -1.56; 95% CI = -2.07 to -1.04; P < 0.00001), gastrointestinal function (WMD = -2.60; 95% CI = -3.07 to -2.13; P < 0.00001), body temperature (WMD = -2.16; 95% CI = -2.83 to -1.49; P < 0.00001), serum amylase level (WMD = -1.81; 95% CI = -2.66 to -0.96; P < 0.0001), and white blood cell (WMD = -2.16; 95% CI = -2.99 to -1.32; P < 0.00001) recovered more rapidly in the Xuebijing injection group. The incidence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (RR = 0.18; 95% CI = 0.05 to 0.62; P=0.006), pancreatic pseudocyst (RR = 0.17; 95% CI = 0.04 to 0.77; P=0.02), and renal failure (RR = 0.16; 95% CI = 0.05 to 0.60; P=0.006) was significantly lower in the Xuebijing injection group. CONCLUSIONS: Xuebijing injection added on the basis of conventional treatment has a potential benefit for improving the outcomes of AP.

Nanoparticles possess unique features due to their small size and can be composed of different surface chemistries. Carbon quantum dots possess several unique physico-chemical and antibacterial activities. This review provides an overview of different methods to prepare carbon quantum dots from different carbon sources in order to provide guidelines for choosing methods and carbon sources that yield carbon quantum dots with optimal antibacterial efficacy. Antibacterial activities of carbon quantum dots predominantly involve cell wall damage and disruption of the matrix of infectious biofilms through reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation to cause dispersal of infecting pathogens that enhance their susceptibility to antibiotics. Quaternized carbon quantum dots from organic carbon sources have been found to be equally efficacious for controlling wound infection and pneumonia in rodents as antibiotics. Carbon quantum dots derived through heating of natural carbon sources can inherit properties that resemble those of the carbon sources they are derived from. This makes antibiotics, medicinal herbs and plants or probiotic bacteria ideal sources for the synthesis of antibacterial carbon quantum dots. Importantly, carbon quantum dots have been suggested to yield a lower chance of inducing bacterial resistance than antibiotics, making carbon quantum dots attractive for large scale clinical use.

Apigenin is a nonmutagenic flavonoid that has antitumor properties. Polyamines are ubiquitous cellular polycations, which play an important role in the proliferation and differentiation of cancer cells. Highly regulated pathways control the biosynthesis and degradation of polyamines. Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the metabolism, and spermidine/spermine-N1-Acetyl transferase (SSAT) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the catabolism of polyamines. In the current study, the effect of increasing concentrations of apigenin on polyamine levels, ODC and SSAT protein expression, mRNA expression, cell proliferation and apoptosis, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was investigated in SW620 colon cancer cells. The results showed that apigenin significantly reduced cell proliferation, decreased the levels of spermidine and spermine, and increased previously downregulated putrescine contents. Apigenin also enhanced SSAT protein and mRNA levels and the production of reactive oxygen species in SW620 cells, though it had no significant effect on the levels of ODC protein or mRNA. Apigenin appears to decrease the proliferation rate of human SW620 cells by facilitating SSAT expression to induce polyamine catabolism and increasing ROS levels to induce cell apoptosis.

Honeybees may be exposed to insecticidal proteins from transgenic plants via pollen. An assessment of the impact of such exposures on the honeybee is an essential part of the risk assessment process for transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis corn. A field trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of transgenic Bt cry1Ah corn on the honeybee Apis mellifera ligustica. Colonies of honeybees were moved to Bt or non-Bt corn fields during anthesis and then sampled to record their survival, development and behavior. No differences in immature stages, worker survival, bee body weight, hypopharyngeal gland weight, colony performance, foraging activity or olfactory learning abilities were detected between colonies that were placed in non-Bt corn fields and those placed in Bt corn fields. We conclude that cry1Ah corn carries no risk for the survival, development, colony performance or behavior of the honeybee A. mellifera ligustica.

A chemical fingerprint method was developed for investigating the variance of constituents between the whole roots and prepared slices of Radix Angelicae Sinensis (the roots of Angelica sinensis) using HPLC. 19 Radix Angelicae Sinensis whole roots collected from 16 different habitats and 28 commerial drugs including 6 whole roots, 1 root head and 21 prepared slices were analyzed. The component fingerprint of Radix Angelicae Sinensis with 12 common peaks was established. Common peaks 2, 5 and 6 could not be detected in most of the prepared slice samples. Except peaks 11 and 12, all the other peaks in graphics of the prepared slice samples mostly showed lower responses than those of the whole root samples. The whole roots and prepared slices could also be divided into two groups based on the clustering analysis results done by SAS 8.2. Meanwhile, the Similarity Evaluation System for Chromatographic Fingerprint of TCM 2004 software was applied for data analysis. Except samples y-17, s-3, s-5 and s-6, the similarities of the whole root samples were over 0.973, while the similarities of the prepared slice samples were all below 0.969. All the results demonstrated that there was distinguished difference in chemical components between the whole roots and prepared slices of Radix Angelicae Sinensis. Our experiments suggested to maintain the active components, whole roots of Radix Angelicae Sinensis should be a better choice than prepared slices for medicine trade and the storage of Radix Angelicae Sinensis should be taken care of.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Chinese traditional medicine heluoshugan capsule on liver fibrosis induced by Schistosoma japonicum infection in mice. METHODS: Liver fibrosis in mice was established by Schistosoma japonicum infection in 6 weeks. Suspension of heluoshugan prepared with normal saline was given orally to the mice, 2 capsules for 20 mice daily for 8 weeks. The level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and type I, III collagen in liver tissue were detected by immuno-histochemistry. RESULTS: The results showed that heluoshugan improved the pathological change of the liver tissue, decreased the level of type I, III collagen, especially type III collagen (P < 0.01). The level of VEGF and FAK expression was inhibited after the administration of heluoshugan, though the level usually increased in liver fibrosis due to the infection. CONCLUSIONS: The result suggests that heluoshugan capsule might have therapeutic effect on liver fibrosis induced by the infection of Schistosoma japonicum in mice, by inhibiting the activation of hepatic stellate cells and the pathological change of liver blood vessel.
