BACKGROUND: For decades, evidence from observational studies and randomized controlled trials has converged to suggest associations of dietary components, foods, and dietary patterns with dementia. With population aging and a projected exponential expansion of people living with dementia, formulating nutritional strategies for dementia prevention has become a research hotspot. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to summarize available data on the roles of specific dietary components, food groups, and dietary patterns in dementia prevention among the elderly. METHODS: Database search was carried out using PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Medline. RESULTS: Polyphenols, folate, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and ß-carotene might decrease the risk of dementia. Consumption of green leafy vegetables, green tea, fish, and fruits is recommended. However, saturated fat, a diet rich in both dietary copper and saturated fat, aluminum from drinking water, and heavy drinking might increase dementia risk. Healthy dietary patterns, especially the Mediterranean diet, were proven to bring more cognitive benefits than single dietary components. CONCLUSION: We discussed and summarized the evidence on the roles of dietary components and patterns in dementia prevention among the elderly and found that some factors were closely associated with dementia risk in elderly. This may pave the way for the identification of dietary components and patterns as new therapeutic targets for dementia prevention in the elderly population.

Background: Polydatin (PD) is the primary active compound in Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb and has been demonstrated to exert anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activities. In the present study, we aimed to explore the therapeutic mechanisms of PD against chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain. Methods: The putative targets of PD were obtained from the CTD and SwissTargetPrediction databases. Neuropathic pain- and VIN-related targets were collected from the CTD and GeneCards databases. Subsequently, the intersection targets were obtained using the Venn tool, and the protein-protein interaction (PPI) was constructed by the STRING database. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed to investigate the biological functions of the intersection targets. Further, a rat model of VIN-induced neuropathic pain was established to confirm the reliability of the network pharmacology findings. Results: A total of 46 intersection targets were identified as potential therapeutic targets, mainly related to neuroinflammation. KEGG pathway analysis indicated that the IL-17 signaling pathway was involved in the mechanism of the antinociceptive effect of PD. PPI network analysis indicated that RELA, IL-6, TP53, MAPK3, and MAPK1 were located at crucial nodes in the network. Additionally, PD exerted an antinociceptive effect by increasing the nociceptive threshold. The results of qRT-PCR, western blot, and immunohisochemistry indicated that PD inhibited the IL-6, TP53, and MAPK1 levels in VIN-induced neuropathic pain rats. Conclusions: Overall, this research provided evidence that suppressing inflammatory signaling pathways might be a potential mechanism action of PD's antinociceptive effect against VIN-induced neuropathic pain.

Complex and high levels of various pollutants in high-strength wastewaters hinder efficient and stable biological nutrient removal. In this study, the changes in pollutant removal performance and microbial community structure in a laboratory-scale anaerobic/aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating simulated pre-fermented high-strength wastewater were investigated under different influent loading conditions. The results showed that when the influent chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and orthophosphate (PO43--P) concentrations in the SBR increased to 983, 56, and 20 mg/L, respectively, the COD removal efficiency was maintained above 85%, the TN removal efficiency was 64.5%, and the PO43--P removal efficiency increased from 78.3% to 97.5%. Partial nitrification with simultaneous accumulation of ammonia (NH4+-N) and nitrite (NO2--N) was observed, which may be related to the effect of high influent load on ammonia- and nitrite-oxidising bacteria. The biological phosphorus removal activity was higher when propionate was used as the carbon source instead of acetate. The relative abundance of glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) increased significantly with the increase in organic load, while Tetrasphaera was the consistently dominant polyphosphate accumulating organism (PAO) in the reactor. Under high organic loading conditions, there was no significant PAO-GAO competition in the reactor, thus the phosphorus removal performance was not affected.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Dioscorea nipponica Makino as a Chinese folk medicine has been used for the treatment of chronic bronchitis, cough, and asthma. Several studies have established the antimetastatic potential of Dioscorea nipponica Makino extract. Dioscin is a major bioactive compound in Dioscorea nipponica Makino and has anti-tumor property in lung cancer cell lines. However, the preventive effect of dioscin against lung cancer and its key mechanism haven't been identified yet. AIM OF STUDY: To identify the prevention effect of dioscin on lung cancer and explore its key mechanism based on network pharmacology and experimental validation. METHODS: The potential targets of dioscin were obtained from the HERB database. The therapeutic targets of lung cancer were acquired from the GeneCards database. Protein-protein interaction network (PPI) was constructed in the STRING 11.0 database. The David database was used for enrichment analysis. Molecular Docking was finished by the AutoDock Vina. NSCLC cell lines and mouse lung cancer model were used to confirm the prevention effect of dioscin on lung cancer and its key mechanism. RESULTS: 76 potential targets of dioscin were identified to be involved in lung cancer treatment, which refer to 512 biological processes, 47 molecular functions, 77 cellular components and 107 signal pathways. The molecular docking suggested that dioscin might bind to AKT1, Caspase3, TP53, C-JUN and IL-6. The DARTS indicated that dioscin could bind to AKT1. In vitro, dioscin could decrease proliferation, invasion and migration in A549 and PC-9 cells with the significant reduction in the expression of p-AKT, MMP2, and PCNA. In vivo, dioscin could reduce lung nodules, lung injury, and mortality in mouse lung cancer model with reducing the expression of p-AKT, MMP2, PCNA and increasing the expression of active-caspase3. CONCLUSION: Dioscin could prevent lung cancer and its key target is AKT1 kinase, a center protein of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The present study aimed to explore whether and how omega-3 (ω-3) supplementation could interact with genetic factors to modulate cognitive functions, amyloid pathologies, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. METHODS: A total of 1,670 non-demented participants (mean age 73 years, 47% females, 41% APOE ε4 carriers) were followed up for 10 years. Hierarchical regressions, linear mixed-effects models, and Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the interaction effects of ω-3 supplementation with APOE ε4 and polygenic hazard scores, after adjusting for age, gender, education, cognitive diagnosis, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and cardiovascular risk score. RESULTS: Individuals who progress to AD during the follow-up tend to take a shorter duration of ω-3 at baseline than those stable, for whom the difference remained significant only amongst APOE ε4 carriers (p < 0.01). The interaction term (APOE ε4 × ω-3) accounted for a significant amount of variance in cognition and cerebral amyloid burden. Long-term ω-3 use protected cognition (especially memory function) and lowered amyloid burden and AD risk only amongst APOE ε4 carriers. Mediation analysis suggested that amyloid pathologies, brain reserve capacities, and brain metabolism mediated the relationships of ω-3 use with memory and global cognition for APOE ε4 (+) carriers. Similar interaction and mediation effects were also indicated amongst high-risk subjects defined by polygenic hazard scores. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term ω-3 intake may have a role in AD prevention in genetically at-risk populations.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of songlingxuemaikang (SLXMK) on mild essential hypertension in patients in terms of endothelial function. METHODS: We enrolled 90 patients with mild essential hypertension in Xuanwu Hospital from January 2016 to December 2016. To evaluate the effects of SLXMK, the 90 patients were randomly assigned at a 2∶1 ratio into 2 groups: the SLXMK group (500 mg per capsule, 4500 mg/d, n = 60) and the losartan potassium group (50 mg per table, 50 mg/d, n = 30). The total study period was 12 weeks, and the changes of blood pressure, laboratory test and endothelium function were compared between two groups. RESULTS: After 12 weeks of treatment with SLXMK, blood pressure (BP) and plasma lipid levels significantly improved (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the reactive hyperemia index (RHI) increased in the SLXMK group (P < 0.05). The results of multivariate logistic regression analyses examining the association of selected variables with showed that high level of oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) was positively associated with endothelial dysfunction. CONCLUSION: SLXMK not only effectively decreased BP and plasma lipid levels, but also reduced ox-LDL and RHI in patients with mild essential hypertension. And SLXMK might improve endothelial function through decreasing the circulating ox-LDL.

BACKGROUND: Green tea has been widely recognized in ameliorating cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD), especially the progression of cognitive dysfunction. But the underlying mechanism is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine the role of green tea consumption in the association with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of AD pathology and to ascertain whether specific population backgrounds showed the differences toward these relationships. METHODS: Multivariate linear models analyzed the available data on CSF biomarkers and frequency of green tea consumption of 722 cognitively intact participants from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and LifestylE (CABLE) database, and we additionally detected the interaction effects of tea consumption with APOEɛ4 status and gender using a two-way analysis of covariance. RESULTS: Frequent green tea consumption was associated with a decreased level of CSF total-tau protein (t-tau) (p = 0.041) but not with the levels of CSF amyloid-ß 42 (Aß42) and CSF phosphorylated tau. The more pronounced associations of green tea consumption with CSF t-tau (p = 0.007) and CSF t-tau/Aß42 (p = 0.039) were observed in individuals aged 65 years or younger. Additionally, males with frequent green tea consumption had a significantly low level of CSF t-tau/Aß42 and a modest trend toward decreased CSF t-tau. There were no interaction effects of green tea consumption with APOEɛ4 and gender. CONCLUSION: Collectively, our findings consolidated the favorable effects of green tea on the mitigation of AD risk. The constituents of green tea may improve abnormal tau metabolism and are promising targets in interventions and drug therapies.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a novel perineal nerve block approach for transperineal prostate biopsy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five adult male cadavers were dissected to delineate the superficial and deep branches of the perineal nerve. Afterwards, 90 out of 115 patients were selected and randomly assigned to receive periprostatic, periapical triangle, or branches of perineal nerve (BPN) block. The primary outcome was the maximal pain intensity associated with transperineal prostate biopsy, which was assessed by the 10-point visual analog scale. The secondary outcomes included the number of biopsy with visual analog scale of ≥4 in each biopsy procedure, and the incidences of complications. RESULTS: On the horizontal line of the upper anal border, the locations of the superficial branch of perineal nerve on the left and right sides were 1.87 ± 0.05 cm and 1.86 ± 0.06 cm, respectively; and the deep branch were 2.15 ± 0.07 cm and 2.16 ± 0.06 cm, respectively, from the midline, and lied between the deep layer of superficial fascia and prostate capsule. The number of cases finally enrolled in data analysis in periprostatic block, periapical triangle block, and BPN block groups were 26, 27, and 30, respectively. The maximal pain intensities were 3.4 (3.1-3.7), 3.3 (3.0-3.6), and 1.8 (1.5-2.2) in the 3 groups, respectively, and the numbers of biopsy with the pain intensity of ≥4 were 4.0 (3.2-4.9), 4.2 (3.3-5.2), and 0.7 (0.1-1.2), respectively. There were 4, 3 and 4 cases developing hematuria, and 1, 1 and 2 burdened with urine retention after biopsy in the 3 groups, respectively. CONCLUSION: Collectively, BPN block is a safe, effective and repeatable local anesthesia approach for transperineal prostate biopsy.

The optimization of more sustainable fertilization practice to relieve phosphorus (P) resource scarcity and increase P fertilizer utilization, a better understanding of the regulatory roles of microbes in P mobilization is urgently required to reduce P input. The genes phoD and pqqC are responsible for regulating organic and inorganic P mobilization, respectively. Using high-throughput sequencing, the corresponding bacterial communities harbored by these genes were determined. We conducted a 4-year rice-rice-crop rotation to investigate the responses of phoD- and pqqC-harboring bacterial communities to the partial replacement of inorganic P fertilizer by organic manure with reduced P input. The results showed that a combination of organic and inorganic fertilization maintained high rice yield, and also produced a more complex and stable phosphate mobilizing bacterial community, which contributed to phosphatase activities more than their gene abundances in the model analysis. Compared with the conventional mineral fertilization, organic-inorganic fertilization with the reduced P input slightly increased pqqC gene abundance while significantly enhanced the abundance of phoD-harboring bacteria, especially the genera Bradyrhizobium and Methylobacterium known as potential organic P mineralizers which can maintain high rice production. Moreover, the increased pH was the most impactful factor for the phoD- and pqqC-harboring bacterial communities, by promoting microbial P turnover and greatly increasing bioavailable P pools (H2O-Pi and NaHCO3-Pi, NaOH-Pi) in this P-deficient paddy soil. Hence, our study demonstrated that the partial replacement of mineral P with organic manure could reshape the inorganic phosphate solubilizing and alkaline-phosphomonoesterase encoding bacterial communities towards more resilient and effective to the high P utilization and productivity over intense cultivation, providing insights into the potential of soil microbes in the efficient management of agricultural P fertilization.

Objective: To study and create the algorithm for the diversity (AD) of extensible markup language (XML) tree map, and provide a new tool for the identification of Artemisiae Annuae Herba. Method: According to the literature research, the key information of Artemisiae Annuae Herba was selected from the macroscopic, mesoscopic and microscopic information, etc. Based on the key information, the relevant upper standards of domestic and foreign professional fields were cited to assign the unique identification independent of language for each data element, and the coding rules of relevant data elements were established. The digital coding technology was applied to the flexible structure editor, and the tree map was created, which could be returned as the 5th version of hypertext markup language (HTML5) or XML format. Based on the diversity related algorithms, the authors innovatively developed the AD of XML tree map of Artemisiae Annuae Herba, which took into account both of topology and semantics, and the expression model of related mathematical functions of Artemisiae Annuae Herba was established. By comparing the calculation results with the reality, the algorithm model was debugged continuously until the convergence of the core-culvert algorithm model. Result: Through the research on AD, the diversity between two XML tree maps could be calculated, and the discrimination or identification model of Artemisiae Annuae Herba also could be finally optimized and established. After calculation and analysis of the tested tree maps, the effective rate of the model was 100%. Conclusion: In this study, the establishment of the AD of XML tree map can effectively assist in the identification of Artemisiae Annuae Herba, which provides certain technical support and theoretical guidance for the research on intelligent application of traditional Chinese medicine.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: A large number of studies have shown that function constipation (FC) has an extremely high incidence of mental and psychological disorders. Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) was applied to the treatment of psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. We explored the effects of CES combined with biofeedback therapy (BFT) on the psychological state, clinical symptoms, and anorectal function in patients with FC. METHODS: A total of 74 patients with FC were randomly divided into 2 groups. The control group received BFT. CES combined with BFT was carried out in the experiment group. All patients were assessed using the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS), and Wexner constipation score at baseline and the end of each course. Anorectal manometry and balloon expulsion tests were performed before and after treatment. RESULTS: After treatment, the participants in the experiment group had significantly lower score SAS, SDS, and Wexner constipation scores than the control group (all P < 0.05). The number of successful expulsion in the experiment group was larger than the control group (P = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS: CES combined with BFT was effective in improving the psychological status of anxiety, depression, and bowel symptoms in patients with FC.

Objective To investigate the effect of glutamine on energy intake and prognosis of severe burn patients in differ-ent pathway.Methods Using retrospective study method,we brought the patients into our study from October 2010 to April 2014 in accordance with the inclusion criteria.Patients who were given the Gln before 5 days after injury through gastric bowel were brought into the EN group,others who were given the Gln after 5 days after the injury through vein were brought into PN groups. A total of 66 patients were included in this study,with 31 cases of EN group and 35 cases of PN group.Total energy intake,external and internal energy intake,nutrients heating,energy intake/energy consumption ratio,blood glucose control,insulin use and viscera damage(the blood urea nitrogen,creatinine,alanine aminotransferase,aspartate aminotransferase,total bilirubin,creatine kinase,lac-tate dehydrogenase),ICU days,hospital stays and mortality were observed in 1,2,3,4 weeks after injury.Results Within a month after the injury,the energy intake of patients in EN group were more than PN group,especially the energy from intestinal canal.Be-sides,the ICU days of patients in EN group were shorter than patients in PN group (all P 0.05).Conclusion Supplement of Gln may be more conducive to improve the intestinal function in patients with burns may be more conducive to improve the intestinal function in patients with burns,im-prove the degree of tolerance of enteral nutrition,increase energy intake and conducive to improving the prognosis of patients.

Objective To explore the effect of family constellation therapy on the spouses of female tumor patients . Methods Two hundred and two spouses of 202 female tumor patients were divided to the control group ( n = 43 ) and experiment group according to their wills(n=159):the former were intervened with health education and skills training and the latter trained in a workshop with family constellation by psychology training specialists in addition to health intervention and skill training intervention. After the intervention, the two groups were compared in terms of quality of life, family function and marriage status. Result The total scores of the experiment group on quality of life , social relationship and environment were all higher than those of the control group (all P<0.05) and the experiment group got higher score in trusting their spouses than the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion The family constellation can improve female tumor patients'quality of life and promote the trust in their spouses.

Infectious bone diseases following severely contaminated open fractures are frequently encountered in clinical practice. It is difficult to successfully repair bone and control infection at the same time. To identify a better treatment method, we prepared a dual-drug release system that was comprised of icariin (IC, a natural osteoinductive molecule), vancomycin (VA) and injectable calcium phosphate cement (CPC). The ultrastructure of the dual-drug release system was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and the biocompatibility was assessed by cell culture. In addition, the release kinetics of IC and VA were respectively investigated by using high­performance liquid chromatography. Finally, this system was used to repair Staphylococcus aureus-contaminated bone defects in a rabbit model. Twelve weeks after the implantation of IC-VA/CPC, the contaminated bone defects were completely repaired, with significantly improved formation of lamellar bone and recanalization of the marrow cavity compared with the controls (CPC without antibiotics or osteoinductive agent). These results demonstrate that this dual-drug release system, with its concomitant antibiotic and osteoinductive properties, has significant potential for the treatment of contaminated bone injury or infectious bone disease.

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the effects of the panthenol-glutamine on intestinal damage and motor function of intestine in rats with burn injury as well as its dose-effect relationship.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>(1) Experiment 1. Ninety SD rats were divided into groups A-I according to the random number table, with 10 rats in each group. Rats in groups A-I were inflicted with 30% TBSA full-thickness burn and fed by gavage with panthenol and glutamine at post injury hour (PIH) 4, in the whole dosage of 1.00 and 4, 0.50 and 4, 0.25 and 4, 1.00 and 2, 0.50 and 2, 0.25 and 2, 1.00 and 1, 0.50 and 1, 0.25 and 1 g·kg(-1)·d(-1). The feeding was carried out twice a day to achieve the total dosage in 7 days. On drug withdrawal day, blood and intestinal tissue were harvested to detect the intestinal propulsion index, diamine oxidase (DAO) activity in serum, and the content of acetylcholine and intestinal mucosa protein. The best proportion of panthenol and glutamine was screened. (2) Experiment 2. Seventy SD rats were divided into normal control (NC), burn (B), burn+panthenol (B+P), burn+glutamine (B+G), and burn+low, moderate, or high dose of panthenol-glutamine (B+LPG, B+MPG, B+HPG) groups according to the random number table, with 10 rats in each group. Rats in the latter 6 groups were inflicted with 30% TBSA full-thickness burn. Rats in the latter 5 groups were fed by gavage with panthenol and (or) glutamine at PIH 4. Rats in group B+P were fed with panthenol for 1 g·kg(-1)·d(-1), rats in group B+G with glutamine for 4 g·kg(-1)·d(-1), rats in groups B+LPG, B+MPG, and B+HPG with panthenol and glutamine in the dosage of 0.50 and 2, 1.00 and 4, 2.00 and 8 g·kg(-1)·d(-1). The feeding was carried out twice a day to achieve the total dosage for 7 days. The indexes and time point for observation were the same as those of experiment 1. Meanwhile, the pathological change in intestine was observed. The same process was carried out in the rats of group NC. Data were processed with factorial designed analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-way ANOVA and Fisher's exact probability test. LSD was applied for paired comparison.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>(1) The values of intestinal propulsion index and intestinal mucosa protein content in groups A and B were close (with P values all above 0.05), and were significantly higher than those of the other 7 groups (with P values all below 0.01). Content of acetylcholine in group A was significantly higher than that of the other 8 groups (with P values all below 0.01). DAO activity in groups A, D, and E was close in value (with P values all above 0.05), and all of the values were significantly lower than those of the other 6 groups (with P values all below 0.01). The best proportion of panthenol and glutamine was 1.00 and 4 g·kg(-1)·d(-1). (2) Compared with those of group NC, the intestinal propulsion index, the contents of acetylcholine and intestinal mucosa protein were decreased significantly, while the DAO activity obviously increased in group B (with P values all below 0.01); the intestinal propulsion index was decreased significantly in group B+P (P < 0.01); the intestinal propulsion index and content of acetylcholine were decreased significantly in group B+G (with P values all below 0.01); the intestinal propulsion index was decreased significantly in group B+LPG (P < 0.01); no obvious change was observed in groups B+MPG and B+HPG (with P values all above 0.05). Compared with those of group B [0.50 ± 0.07, (69 ± 10) µg/mL, (26 ± 11) µg/g, (0.672 ± 0.145) U/mL], the contents of acetylcholine and intestinal mucosa protein were increased significantly, DAO activity decreased significantly in group B+P (with P values all below 0.01); the contents of intestinal mucosa protein was increased significantly, DAO activity decreased significantly in group B+G (with P values all below 0.01); the contents of acetylcholine and intestinal mucosa protein were increased significantly in group B+LPG (with P values all below 0.01); the intestinal propulsion index, the contents of acetylcholine and intestinal mucosa protein were increased significantly, while the DAO activity obviously decreased in groups B+MPG and B+HPG [0.66 ± 0.07, 0.68 ± 0.05; (163 ± 24), (168 ± 15) µg/mL; (57 ± 7), (57 ± 7) µg/g; (0.203 ± 0.070), (0.193 ± 0.068) U/mL, with P values all below 0.01]. The levels of the four indexes in groups B+MPG and B+HPG were close or the same in values (with P values all above 0.05). Compared with those of group B, the numbers of rats with irregularly arranged villi in group B+P were decreased significantly (P < 0.05); the numbers of rats with villi decreased in height, irregularly arranged villi, and neutrophil infiltration in group B+G were decreased significantly (with P values all below 0.05); the numbers of rats with villi decreased in height, irregularly arranged villi, degeneration and necrosis of cells, and neutrophil infiltration in group B+LPG were decreased significantly (with P values all below 0.05); the numbers of rats with villi decreased in height and number, irregularly arranged villi, degeneration and necrosis of cells, and neutrophil infiltration in groups B+MPG and B+HPG were decreased significantly (with P values all below 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between group B+HPG and group B+MPG for the former mentioned five indexes (with P values all above 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Combined application of panthenol and glutamine can obviously reduce intestinal mucosa damage and promote gastrointestinal motility of rats with burn injury, and they show curative effect superior to exclusive use of either of the two drugs. The best proportion of panthenol and glutamine is 1.00 and 4 g·kg(-1)·d(-1).</p>

For many years, the major concerns in the treatment of a major burn injury have always been shock resuscitation, infection control, and wound treatment, while nutrition has been considered as a subordinate concern. The concept of nutrition in the treatment of a major burn has been recognized as "nutrition support", only with the purpose of restraining negative nitrogen balance through administration of energy and protein, in order to prevent malnutrition in patients with severe burn. In recent 10 years, however, increasing evidences have showed that optimal nutritional management could improve the outcome of severe burn patients. Now it is recognized that nutrition is not only to provide exogenous nutrients to improve nutritional status of the patients, but also to regulate cell metabolism, enhance cell activity, maintain and uphold the structure and function of the gastrointestinal mucosa, thus to improve patient's outcome. Therefore, the term of "nutrition support"seems to be far from comprehensiveness to reflect the purpose and the aim of this important treatment strategy. Medical literatures especially those in nutritional guidelines have begun to use the term of "nutrition therapy" instead of "nutrition support", which typifies the changes in nutritional concept, aim, means, and clinical evaluation. The aim of nutrition has changed from simply "providing nutritional substrate and improving nutritional status of patients" to "regulating cell metabolism, maintaining organ structure and function, and ultimately improving outcome of patient". Meanwhile, nutritional means has been more consummate, including special nutrients, hormones, and growth factors, in addition to use of conventional nutrients, in order to enhance therapeutic effect of nutrition in treatment of massive burn injury. Burn nutrition is no longer confined to maintenance of positive nitrogen balance, it should also consider the regulation of cell activity, metabolic status, immune and organ function. The purpose of the article is to analyze and discuss the important issues concerning nutrition therapy in treatment of burn injury, including risk screening, optimal energy supply and ratio of different nutritional ingredients, the choice of special nutrient, as well as the determination of optimal time for giving various nutritional supplements.

RESUMO

A new anthraquinone compound, 1,3-dihydroxy-6-methoxy-2-methoxymethyl-9,10-anthraquinone (1), along with four known analogues (2-5) were isolated from the roots of Prismatomeris tetrandra. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. Among these compounds, lucidin omega-methyl ether (4) and lucidin omega-ethyl ether (5) were isolated from this genus for the first time. Compound 1 showed weak cytotoxic activity against A549 and LAC cell lines.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of mast cells in mechanisms of collagen remodelling induced by non-ablative laser treatment. The dorsal skin of Kunming (KM) mice was exposed to 1,320 nm neodymium-yttrium-aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser weekly for four consecutive weeks. Biopsies were taken 1 h after irradiation and 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days and 60 days after the first treatment. Skin samples were studied for mast cells, fibroblasts, and type I and III collagen, by toluidine blue, haematoxylin-eosin (HE) and immunohistochemical staining, respectively. The total number of mast cells in the skin of experimental group was significantly greater than that in the control at 1 h, 1 day, 21 days and 60 days after the first treatment (P < 0.05, respectively). At any of the time points studied, the number of degranulated mast cells in the experimental group was significantly higher than in the control (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.05, respectively).The number of fibroblasts in the experimental group exhibited a significant increase in comparison with those in control skin at days 7, 21, 30 and 60 after irradiation (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.05, respectively). The amount of type I collagen was significantly higher than in the control from day 21 to day 60 (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.01, respectively), and type III collagen showed a marked increase between day 7 and day 60, compared with the control (P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.01, respectively). There was a significant positive correlation between the number of fibroblasts and granulated mast cells (r = 0.549, P < 0.01). The amount of type I and III collagen also showed significant positive correlations with the number of degranulated mast cells (r = 0.555, P < 0.01 and r = 0.579, P < 0.01, respectively). The results suggested that dermal mast cells might be involved in the inflammatory response, fibroblast proliferation and collagen remodelling induced by non-ablative laser treatment.

Successful development of safe and effective nanoprobes for tumor targeting and selective therapy is a challenging task. Although gold nanorods(GNRs) have the potential to perform such a role, the toxicity of surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromides (CTAB) on their surfaces limits their applications. Here, polyamidoamine dendrimer was applied to replace CTAB molecules on the surface of gold nanorods. When the resultant dendrimer-modified gold nanorods conjugated with arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptides, they showed highly selective targeting and destructive effects on the cancer cells and solid tumors under near-infrared laser irradiation. Also, we successfully observed the disappearance of tumors implanted in four sample mice from test group of ten. High-performance RGD-conjugated dendrimer-modified GNR nanoprobes exhibit great potential in applications such as tumor targeting, imaging, and selective photothermal therapy.
