As ethnic medicine, the whole grass of plants in Cirsium was used as antimicrobial. This review focuses on the antimicrobial activity of plants in Cirsium, including antimicrobial components, against different types of microbes and bacteriostatic mechanism. The results showed that the main antimicrobial activity components in Cirsium plants were flavonoids, triterpenoids and phenolic acids, and the antimicrobial ability varied according to the species and the content of chemicals. Among them, phenolic acids showed a strong antibacterial ability against Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecium. The antibacterial mechanisms include: (1) damaging the cell membrane, cell walls, mitochondria and nucleus of bacteria; (2) inhibiting the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids; (3) suppressing the synthesis of enzymes for tricarboxylic acid cycle pathways and glycolysis, and then killing the bacteria via inhibition of energy production. Totally, most research results on antimicrobial activity of Cirsium plants are reported based on in vitro assays. The evidence from clinical data and comprehensive evaluation are needed.

BACKGROUND: Huangqi (Radix Astragali) is a natural medicine with a wide range of uses. The research related to Huangqi is getting hotter and the number of publications is gradually increasing. This study aims to explore the current status and emerging trends of Huangqi-related research. METHOD: Huangqi-related literature was systemically obtained from the Web of Science database. The CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and, R package "Bibliometrix" tools were used to analyze the number of publications, countries, research institutions, journals, authors, keywords, references, and trends. RESULTS: A total of 2255 papers were retrieved for analysis. These papers were written by 11,247 authors from 1927 institutions in 71 countries, published in 570 journals, and cited 73,534 references from 11,553 journals. From 1999 to 2022, the number of publications gradually increased. China was the country with the highest number of publications. The most prolific institution was Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the journal publishing the most Huangqi-related literature. Dr Karl Wah Keung Tsim was the authors with the most output publications. The Review, entitle "Review of the Botanical Characteristics, Phytochemistry, and Pharmacology of Astragalus membranaceous (Huangqi)," was the reference being cited most frequently. The major keywords were apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Gut microbiota and epithelial-mesenchymal transitions were new research hotspots in recent years. CONCLUSION: This study used quantitative and visual analysis of Huangqi to provide insights into the research priorities, frontier research hotspots, and future research trends in this field.

This study explored the protective effect of astragaloside â £(AS-â £) on oxygen-glucose deprivation(OGD)-induced autophagic injury in PC12 cells and its underlying mechanism. An OGD-induced autophagic injury model in vitro was established in PC12 cells. The cells were divided into a normal group, an OGD group, low-, medium-, and high-dose AS-â £ groups, and a positive drug dexmedetomidine(DEX) group. Cell viability was measured using the MTT assay. Transmission electron microscopy was used to observe autophagosomes and autolysosomes, and the MDC staining method was used to assess the fluorescence intensity of autophagosomes. Western blot was conducted to determine the relative expression levels of functional proteins LC3-â ¡/LC3-â , Beclin1, p-Akt/Akt, p-mTOR/mTOR, and HIF-1α. Compared with the normal group, the OGD group exhibited a significant decrease in cell viability(P<0.01), an increase in autophagosomes(P<0.01), enhanced fluorescence intensity of autophagosomes(P<0.01), up-regulated Beclin1, LC3-â ¡/LC3-â , and HIF-1α(P<0.05 or P<0.01), and down-regulated p-Akt/Akt and p-mTOR/mTOR(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Compared with the OGD group, the low-and medium-dose AS-â £ groups and the DEX group showed a significant increase in cell viability(P<0.01), decreased autophagosomes(P<0.01), weakened fluorescence intensity of autophagosomes(P<0.01), down-regulated Beclin1, LC3-â ¡/LC3-â , and HIF-1α(P<0.05 or P<0.01), and up-regulated p-Akt/Akt and p-mTOR/mTOR(P<0.01). AS-â £ at low and medium doses exerted a protective effect against OGD-induced autophagic injury in PC12 cells by activating the Akt/mTOR pathway, subsequently influencing HIF-1α. The high-dose AS-â £ group did not show a statistically significant difference compared with the OGD group. This study provides a certain target reference for the prevention and treatment of OGD-induced cellular autophagic injury by AS-â £ and accumulates laboratory data for the secondary development of Astragali Radix and AS-â £.

Our objective was to determine effects of supplemental dietary riboflavin on meat quality, antioxidant capacity, fatty acid composition, lipidomic, volatilomic, and proteomic profiling of duck breast muscle. The results showed that dietary riboflavin supplementation significantly increased growth performance, breast meat yield, intramuscular fat content, polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), n3-PUFA, n6-PUFA, redness (a*), and pH24h, but decreased lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*). Furthermore, riboflavin supplementation significantly improved muscle antioxidant capacity based on various biochemical parameters. Lipidomic and volatilomic analyses revealed that riboflavin supplementation markedly increased breast meat phosphatidylglycerol and coenzyme Q contents and two favourable key odorants, citronellyl acetate and 3-(methylthio)-propanal. Proteomics analyses confirmed that riboflavin supplementation activated mitochondrial aerobic respiration, including fatty acid beta oxidation, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. In conclusion, supplementing duck diets with riboflavin enhanced breast meat quality, attributed to increases in antioxidant capacity and mitochondrial functions.

With scarce resources, natural Bovis Calculus is expensive and hard to meet clinical demand. At the moment, four kinds of Bovis Calculus are available on the market: the natural product, in vitro cultured product, synthesized product, and the product formed in cow after manual intervention. In this study, papers on the four kinds of Bovis Calculus products and relevant Chinese patent medicines were searched from Web of Science, PubMed, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI). CiteSpace, citexs AI, and CNKI were employed for bibliometric analysis and knowledge map analysis. On this basis, the status, trend, and focuses of research on Bovis Calculus and relevant Chinese patent medicines were summarized. The results suggested overall slow development in the research on Bovis Calculus and relevant Chinese patent medicines with three typical growth stages. It is consistent with the development of Bovis Calculus substitutes and the national policy for the development of traditional Chinese medicine. At the moment, the research on Bovis Calculus and relevant Chinese patent medicines has been on the rise. In recent years, there has been an explosion of research on them, particularly the quality control of Bovis Calculus and the Chinese patent medicines, the pharmacological efficacy of Chinese patent medicines, such as Angong Niuhuang Pills, and the comparison of the quality of various Bovis Calculus products. However, there is a paucity of research on the pharmacological efficacy and the mechanism of Bovis Calculus. This medicinal and the relevant Chinese patent medicines have been studied from diverse perspectives and China becomes outstanding in this research field. However, it is still necessary to reveal the chemical composition, pharmacological efficacy, and mechanism through multi-dimensional deep research.

Background: Acupuncture has achieved good results in the treatment of cough, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung diseases, but the mechanism associated with acupuncture in the treatment of chronic cough induced by lung surgery is unknown. We investigated whether acupuncture therapy could improve the symptoms of chronic cough after lung surgery through cyclic-AMp dependent protein kinase A (PKA)/cyclic-AMp dependent protein kinase C (PKC) regulation of the transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) signaling pathway. Methods: The guinea pigs were divided into 5 groups: the Sham operation Group (Sham), the Model Group (Model), the Electroacupuncture + Model Group (EA + M), the H89 + Model Group (H89 + M) and the Go6983 + Model Group (Go6983 + M). The effect of treatment was determined by measuring cough symptoms (number of coughs/cough incubation period) as the outcome criterion. The levels of inflammatory cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and blood were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Lung tissue was stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). The expression of p-PKA, p-PKC and p-TRPV1 proteins was measured by Western blotting. The mRNA levels of TRPV1, Substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and neurokinin-1R (NK1R) were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: Acupuncture significantly reduced the cough frequency and prolonged the cough latency of chronic cough in guinea pigs after lung surgery. In addition, acupuncture reduced the damage to lung tissue. The levels of inflammatory cytokines decreased in all treatment groups, the expression levels of p-PKA, p-PKC and p-TRPV1 were significantly inhibited and the mRNA levels of TRPV1, SP, CGRP and NK1R decreased significantly after acupuncture treatment. Conclusions: Acupuncture therapy ameliorated chronic cough in guinea pigs after lung surgery by regulating the TRPV1 signaling pathway via PKA/PKC. Our results showed that acupuncture may be an effective treatment of chronic cough after lung surgery, and also clarified the potential mechanism, which provides a theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of patients with chronic cough after lung surgery.

This study was to determine the effects of riboflavin deficiency (RD) on intestinal development, jejunum mucosa proteome, cecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) profiling, and cecal microbial diversity and community of starter Pekin ducks. Male white Pekin ducks (1 d old, n = 240) were allocated into 2 groups, with 12 replicates and 10 birds per replicate in each group. For 21 d, all ducks had ad libitum access to either an RD or a riboflavin adequate (control, CON) diet, formulated by supplementing a basal diet with 0 or 10 mg riboflavin per kg of diet, respectively. Compared to the CON group, growth retardation, high mortality, and poor riboflavin status were observed in the RD group. Furthermore, RD reduced the villus height and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth of jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05), indicating morphological alterations of the small intestine. In addition, dietary RD enhanced relative cecum weight and decreased cecal SCFA concentrations (P < 0.05), including propionate, isobutyrate, butyrate, and isovalerate. The jejunum mucosa proteomics showed that 208 proteins were upregulated and 229 proteins were downregulated in the RD group compared to those in the CON group. Among these, RD mainly suppressed intestinal absorption and energy generation processes such as glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, fatty acid beta oxidation, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation, leading to impaired ATP generation. In addition, RD decreased the community richness and diversity of the bacterial community in the cecum of ducks. Specifically, RD reduced the abundance of butyrate-producing bacteria in the cecum (P < 0.05), such as Eubacterium coprostanoligenes, Prevotella and Faecalibacterium. Dietary RD resulted in growth depression and intestinal hypofunction of Pekin ducks, which could be associated with impaired intestinal absorption and energy generation processes in intestinal mucosa, as well as gut microbiota dysbiosis. These findings contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms of intestinal hypofunction due to RD.

Radiation therapy is considered the most effective non-surgical treatment for brain tumors. However, there are no available treatments for radiation-induced brain injury. Bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC) is a demethoxy derivative of curcumin that has anti-proliferative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties. To determine whether BDMC has the potential to treat radiation-induced brain injury, in this study, we established a rat model of radiation-induced brain injury by administering a single 30-Gy vertical dose of irradiation to the whole brain, followed by intraperitoneal injection of 500 µL of a 100 mg/kg BDMC solution every day for 5 successive weeks. Our results showed that BDMC increased the body weight of rats with radiation-induced brain injury, improved learning and memory, attenuated brain edema, inhibited astrocyte activation, and reduced oxidative stress. These findings suggest that BDMC protects against radiation-induced brain injury.

Polysaccharides are important constituents in Dolichos lablab hull. Herein, pectin-glucuronoxylan complex from D. lablab hull designated as DLHP-3 (D. lablab hull polysaccharide,) was prepared by ion exchange and gel permeation chromatography, and further characterized by acid degradation and enzymatic hydrolysis, methylation combined with GC-MS, NMR and MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. Both of pectin and glucuronoxylan regions were found in DLHP-3. The glucuronoxylan region consisted of a â4)-ß-Xylp-(1â backbone with branches of α-GlcpA-(1â substituted at O-2 site, and the ratio of xylose to glucuronic acid was about 5:1. Acetyl groups were mainly attached to O-3 site of â2,4)-ß-Xylp-(1â residues. The main chain of pectin region could be represented by â4)-α-GalpA-(1â4)-α-GalpA-(1â and â2)-α-Rhap-(1â4)-α-GalpA-(1â with partial methyl-esterification. The side chains were deduced to embrace arabinan and arabinogalactan linked to rhamnogalacturonan-I region. Pectin was probably covalently bound to glucuronoxylan. Our findings uncovered the molecular structure of pectin-glucuronoxylan complex from D. lablab hull.

An herbal prescription is usually composed of several herbal medicines. The complex and diverse components bring great challenges to its bioactivity study. To comprehensively analyze the bioactivity of an herbal prescription, a new strategy based on peak-by-peak cutting and knock-out chromatography was proposed. In this strategy, active compounds were screened out via peak-by-peak cutting from an herbal extract, and the influence of a compound on the overall activity of the herbal extract was evaluated by knock-out chromatography. Qiliqiangxin capsule is an herbal prescription composed of 11 herbal medicines for the treatment of chronic heart failure. A total of 71 peaks were collected through peak-by-peak cutting, and each peak was identified by a high-resolution mass spectrum. The bioassay against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl showed that two types of compounds namely salvianolic acids and caffeoylquinic acids were potent scavengers. Knock-out chromatography suggested that the removal of one single compound had no obvious influence on the overall activity of the Qiliqiangxin capsule. After all the main peaks in the Qiliqiangxin capsule were knocked out, the remaining part still exhibited a potent activity, indicating high activity stability of the Qiliqiangxin capsule. The proposed strategy is helpful for the comprehensive analysis of the bioactivity of other herbal prescriptions.

The complete chloroplast genome of an important medicinal plant, Convallaria majalis Linnaeus, was sequenced for the first time. The entire circular genome is 162,218 bp in length, with 37.9% GC contents. The genome has consisted of a large single-copy region (LSC) with a length of 85,417 bp, a small single-copy region (SSC) with a length of 18,495 bp, and two inverted repeat regions (IRs) with a length of 29,153 bp each. The genome harbored 133 genes, including 87 protein coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The phylogenetic tree of 24 plant species was constructed based on the maximum-likelihood method. This study will provide theoretical basis for further study on plant genetics phylogenetic research.

The complete chloroplast genome of an important medicinal plant, Veratrum nigrum Linnaeus, was sequenced. The entire circular genome is 151,580 bp in length, with 37.7% GC contents. The genome has a large single-copy (LSC) region with a length of 81,806 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region with a length of 17,472 bp, and two inverted repeat regions (IRs) with a length of 26,151 bp. It harbored 131 genes, including 85 protein coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis suggested V. nigrum formed a monophyletic clade with relatively short genetic distance to Veratrum oxysepalum and Veratrum taliense. This study will provide theoretical basis for further study on plant genetics phylogenetic research.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of octadecadienoic acid (ODA) on the proliferation and apoptosis of glioma cells and its mechanisms. METHODS: Cultured human glioma cells (cell density 2×106 cells/L) were divided into solvent control group (DMSO, 30 µl/L), 5-FU group (10 mg/L) and octadecadienic acid groups (0.3, 0.6 and 1.2 mg/L groups). The toxicity of ODA on glioma cells was detected by trypan blue and thiazolium blue (MTT). The expression levels of P53, PI3K, P21, PKB/Akt and Caspase-9 in glioma cells were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: â Cell count under optical microscope showed that the inhibition rate of cell proliferation in ODA low, medium and high dose groups and 5-FU group was significantly higher than that in the solvent control group (Pï¼0.01), but there was no statistical significance compared with the 5-FU group (Pï¼0.05). â¡ MTT assay showed that the inhibition rate of cell proliferation was increased significantly in ODA low, medium and high dose groups and 5-FU groups (Pï¼0.01), compared with the solvent control group. Compared with 5-FU group, the inhibition rate of cell proliferation was increased significantly only in ODA high dose group (Pï¼0.01). ⢠The number of G0/G1 phase cells in ODA low, medium and high dose groups and 5-FU group were increased significantly (Pï¼0.05, Pï¼0.01), the number of G2/M phase cells were decreased significantly (Pï¼0.01), and the apoptosis rate was increased significantly (Pï¼0.01),compared with the solvent control group. Compared with the 5-FU group, the number of cells in G2/M phase was decreased significantly (Pï¼0.01) and the apoptosis rate was increased significantly (Pï¼0.01) in ODA high dose group. ⣠ELISA test results showed that the protein expression levels of P53, PI3K and PKB/Akt in ODA low , medium and high dose groups and 5-FU group were significantly lower than those in solvent control group (all Pï¼0.01), but the protein expression levels in ODA high dose group were significantly lower than those in 5-FU group (Pï¼0.01). The protein expression levels of P21 and caspase-9 in ODA low , medium and high dose groups and 5-FU group were significantly higher than those in solvent control group (Pï¼0.05, Pï¼0.01), but the protein expression levels in ODA high dose group were significantly higher than those in 5-Fu group (Pï¼0.01). CONCLUSION: ODA can significantly inhibit the proliferation and promote apoptosis of glioma cells. The mechanisms are related to up-regulating the levels of P21 and caspase-9 to promote apoptosis, down-regulating the levels of P53, PI3K and PKB/Akt to inhibit the cell division cycle, and reducing the activity of PI3K-Akt signal transduction pathway.

Lead compound is an important concept for modern drug discovery. In this study, a new concept of lead chemome and an efficient strategy to discover lead chemome were proposed. Compared with the concept of lead compound, lead chemome can provide not only the starting point for drug development, but also the direction for structure optimization. Two traditional Chinese medicines of Mahonia bealei and Mahonia fortunei were used as examples to illustrate the strategy. Based on natural chromatogram-effect correlation (NCEC), berberine, palmatine and jatrorrhizine were discovered as acetylcholinesterase (AchE) inhibitors. Taking the three compounds as template molecules, a lead chemome consisting of 10 structurally related natural compounds were generated through natural structure-effect correlation (NSEC). In the lead chemome, the IC50 values of jatrorrhizine, berberine, coptisine, palmatine and epiberberine are at nanomolar level, which are comparable to a widely used drug of galantamine. Pharmacophore modeling shows that the positive ionizable group and aromatic rings are important substructures for AchE inhibition. Molecular docking further shows that pi-cation interaction and pi-pi stacking are critical for compounds to maintain nanomolar IC50 values. The structure-activity information is helpful for drug design and structure optimization. This work also expanded the traditional understanding of "stem is the medicinal part of Mahonia bealei and Mahonia fortunei". Actually, all parts except the leaf of Mahonia bealei exhibited potent AchE-inhibitory activity. This study provides not only a strategy to discover lead chemome for modern drug development, but also a reference for the application of different parts of medicinal plants.

BACKGROUND: Pantothenic acid deficiency (PAD) results in growth depression and intestinal hypofunction of animals. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain to be elucidated. Mucosal proteome might reflect dietary influences on physiological processes. RESULTS: A total of 128 white Pekin ducks of one-day-old were randomly assigned to two groups, fed either a PAD or a pantothenic acid adequate (control, CON) diet. After a 16-day feeding period, two ducks from each replicate were sampled to measure plasma parameters, intestinal morphology, and mucosal proteome. Compared to the CON group, high mortality, growth retardation, fasting hypoglycemia, reduced plasma insulin, and oxidative stress were observed in the PAD group. Furthermore, PAD induced morphological alterations of the small intestine indicated by reduced villus height and villus surface area of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The duodenum mucosal proteome of ducks showed that 198 proteins were up-regulated and 223 proteins were down-regulated (> 1.5-fold change) in the PAD group compared to those in the CON group. Selected proteins were confirmed by Western blotting. Pathway analysis of these proteins exhibited the suppression of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, fatty acid beta oxidation, tricarboxylic acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, oxidative stress, and intestinal absorption in the PAD group, indicating impaired energy generation and abnormal intestinal absorption. We also show that nine out of eleven proteins involved in regulation of actin cytoskeleton were up-regulated by PAD, probably indicates reduced intestinal integrity. CONCLUSION: PAD leads to growth depression and intestinal hypofunction of ducks, which are associated with impaired energy generation, abnormal intestinal absorption, and regulation of actin cytoskeleton processes. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms of intestinal hypofunction induced by PAD.

The difficulty of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) researches lies in the complexity of components, metabolites, and bioactivities. For a long time, there has been a lack of connections among the three parts, which is not conducive to the systematic elucidation of TCM effectiveness. To overcome this problem, a classification-based methodology for simplifying TCM researches was refined from literature in the past 10 years (2011-2020). The theoretical basis of this methodology is set theory, and its core concept is classification. Its starting point is that "although TCM may contain hundreds of compounds, the vast majority of these compounds are structurally similar". The methodology is composed by research strategies for components, metabolites and bioactivities of TCM, which are the three main parts of the review. Technical route, key steps and difficulty are introduced in each part. Two perspectives are highlighted in this review: set theory is a theoretical basis for all strategies from a conceptual perspective, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is a common tool for all strategies from a technical perspective. The significance of these strategies is to simplify complex TCM researches, integrate isolated TCM researches, and build a bridge between traditional medicines and modern medicines. Potential research hotspots in the future, such as discovery of bioactive ingredients from TCM metabolites, are also discussed. The classification-based methodology is a summary of research experience in the past 10 years. We believe it will definitely provide support and reference for the following TCM researches.

Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by overweight resulting from fat accumulation, along with disturbance of metabolism and gut microbiota. Fermentation, as a green processing method, is beneficial for improving the nutrition capacity of food components. Polysaccharides are considered as one of the important components in food and are also potential supplements for anti-obesity treatment. This study aimed to investigate the anti-obesity effects of polysaccharides from fermented and non-fermented Momordica charantia L. with Lactobacillus plantarum NCU116 (FP and NFP) on obese rats by serum metabolomics and gut microbiota analysis. Metabolomics results revealed that abnormal lipid metabolism was formed due to obesity. The supplement of FP and NFP improved the glycerophospholipids, glycosphingolipids, and amino acid metabolism of the obese rats, which alleviated the hypercholesterolemia and overweight in rats. Furthermore, the disorder of gut microbiota was ameliorated by FP and NFP. FP promoted the growth of beneficial bacteria, such as phylum Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and genera Anaerostipes, Coprococcus, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium. FP also reduced several harmful bacteria belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria and genera Helicobacter. The positive correlation of the weight loss and lowering of serum lipids with the increased beneficial bacteria further elucidated that the anti-obesity effect of FP in obese rats is associated with the regulation of gut microbiota and serum metabolites. The results of this study could provide information for developing probiotic products in the future that may have beneficial effects on the prevention or treatment of obesity.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary pantothenic acid levels on growth performance, carcass traits, pantothenic acid status, and antioxidant status of male white Pekin ducks from 15 to 42 D of age and to evaluate the requirement of this vitamin for growing ducks. Different levels pantothenic acid (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mg/kg) were supplemented to a corn-soy isolate protein basal diet to produce 6 dietary treatments with different analyzed total pantothenic acid levels (4.52, 6.44, 8.37, 9.88, 12.32, and 14.61 mg/kg). A total of 240 15-day-old male white Pekin ducks were allotted to 6 dietary treatments with 8 replicate pens of 5 birds per pen. At 42 D of age, growth performance, carcass traits, tissue pantothenic acid concentrations, and antioxidant status of white Pekin ducks were examined. Significant effects of dietary pantothenic acid on BW, average daily weight gain (ADG), plasma, and liver pantothenic acid concentrations were observed (P < 0.05) but not carcass traits. The growing ducks fed the basal diet without pantothenic acid supplementation had the lowest BW, ADG, plasma, and liver pantothenic acid content among all ducks (P < 0.05). In addition, the ducks fed the basal diet without pantothenic acid supplementation showed the lowest antioxidant capacity indicated by greatest plasma malondialdehyde content and lowest liver total antioxidant capacity (P < 0.05). And, these criteria responded linearly as dietary pantothenic acid levels increased (P < 0.05). These results indicated that dietary pantothenic acid supplementation improved growth performance and antioxidant status of the growing ducks. In accordance with the broken-line model, the pantothenic acid requirements (based on dietary total pantothenic acid) of male white Pekin ducks from 15 to 42 D of age for BW, ADG, and plasma and liver pantothenic acid contents were 10.18, 10.27, 12.06, and 10.79 mg/kg, respectively.

During spaceflight, the homeostasis of the living body is threatened with cosmic environment including microgravity and irradiation. Traditional Chinese medicine could ameliorate the internal imbalance during spaceflight, but its mechanism is still unclear. In this article, we compared the difference of neuroendocrine-immune balance between simulated microgravity (S) and simulated microgravity and irradiation (SAI) environment. We also observed the antagonistic effect of SAI using a traditional Chinese medicine formula (TCMF). Wistar rats were, respectively, exposed under S using tail suspending and SAI using tail suspending and 60Co-gama irradiation exposure. The SAI rats were intervened with TCMF. The changes of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, splenic T-cell, celiac macrophages, and related cytokines were observed after 21 days. Compared with the normal group, the hyperfunction of HPA axis and celiac macrophages, as well as the hypofunction of splenic T-cells, was observed in both the S and SAI group. Compared with the S group, the levels of plasmatic corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), macrophage activity, and serous interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the SAI group were significantly reduced. The dysfunctional targets were mostly reversed in the TCMF group. Both S and SAI could lead to NEI imbalance. Irradiation could aggravate the negative feedback inhibition of HPA axis and macrophages caused by S. TCMF could ameliorate the NEI dysfunction caused by SAI.

Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD), a major public health problem, has drawn clinical and scientific attention. The study aims to investigate the effect of Ganmeijian [crude extract of malt root, phosphoesterase complex (Pho)] on AFLD, and explore the possible mechanisms. An AFLD rat model was made. 30 and 60 mg/kg Pho were administrated through intestinal fistula for 5 weeks. Compared with those in model group, AST, LDL-C and TC in 30 mg/kg Pho group and TC in 60 mg/kg Pho group decreased. The mRNA level of Fas, Gpat1 and Srebp-1c in Pho groups was significantly reduced. The level of GSH-Px was increased, mitochondrial activity was improved, and the level of MDA and ROS was reduced in Pho groups. Pho shows a beneficial effect on AFLD. The mechanisms are possibly related to Pho inhibiting the expression of fat synthesis genes, protecting the function and increasing the activity of mitochondria in hepatocytes, then reducing the accumulation of ROS and the level of oxidative stress in the liver.
