RESUMO

Designing mitochondria-targeting phototheranostic agents (PTAs), which can simultaneously possess exceptional and balanced type-I photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) performance, still remains challenging. Herein, benzene, furan, and thiophene were utilized as π bridges to develop multifunctional PTAs. STB with thiophene as a π bridge, in particular, benefiting from stronger donor-accepter (D-A) interactions, reduced the singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔES1-T1), allowed more free intramolecular rotation, and exhibited outstanding near-infrared (NIR) emission, effective type-I reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and relatively high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of 51.9%. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that positive-charged STB not only can actively target the mitochondria of tumor cells but also displayed strong antitumor effects and excellent in vivo imaging ability. This work subtly established a win-win strategy by π bridge engineering, breaking the barrier of making a balance between ROS generation and photothermal conversion, boosting a dual enhancement of PDT and PTT performance, and stimulating the development of multimodal imaging-guided precise cancer phototherapy.

RESUMO

Different from other trauma, the scar and pigmentation formed after healing of burn wound not only hinder beauty but also easily lead to a series of sequential psychological problems, such as depression and anxiety. Music therapy, as a supplementary treatment, is widely used in many fields including medical and health care and psychological regulation. However, affected by factors such as medical resources, the awareness and acceptance of music therapy among burn treatment workers in China are still low. Based on the clinical characteristics of burns, this paper matches the applicability of music therapy with it, summarizes the supplementary application of music therapy in the field of burn treatment, expounds this natural science with both science and aesthetics, and puts forward feasible suggestions for its future development.

RESUMO

Purpose@#This study aimed to examine the effects of the Tai Chi exercise program on cognitive function among older adults at risk of dementia living in rural areas. @*Methods@#A non-equivalent control group with a pretest-posttest design was used. Forty-four subjects at risk of dementia aged over 75 were recruited from the dementia care center in O county. The experimental group participated in the Tai Chi exercise program twice a week for one-hour session for 12 weeks, while the control group received the routine management from the dementia care center. Data were analyzed using the SPSS version 24.0 program with descriptive statistics, x2 test, and Mann-Whitney test, t-test and ANCOVA. @*Results@#The significant improvement was found in cognitive function (F=4.72, p=.036) and attention (F=4.44, p=.041) for the Tai Chi exercise group compared to the control group. No adverse events have been notified during the intervention. @*Conclusion@#The study findings suggest that Tai Chi exercise program is safely and effectively applied to older adults at risk of dementia, revealing the potential benefits to improve cognitive function in this population. Further studies are warranted to explore the relationship between physical exercise and cognitive function in older adults with various types of cognitive impairment.

RESUMO

Oncolytic virotherapy is a promising therapeutic strategy that uses replication-competent viruses to selectively destroy malignancies. However, the therapeutic effect of certain oncolytic viruses (OVs) varies among cancer patients. Thus, it is necessary to overcome resistance to OVs through rationally designed combination strategies. Here, through an anticancer drug screening, we show that DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) inhibition sensitizes cancer cells to OV M1 and improves therapeutic effects in refractory cancer models in vivo and in patient tumour samples. Infection of M1 virus triggers the transcription of interferons (IFNs) and the activation of the antiviral response, which can be abolished by pretreatment of DNA-PK inhibitor (DNA-PKI), resulting in selectively enhanced replication of OV M1 within malignancies. Furthermore, DNA-PK inhibition promotes the DNA damage response induced by M1 virus, leading to increased tumour cell apoptosis. Together, our study identifies the combination of DNA-PKI and OV M1 as a potential treatment for cancers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that acupuncture is beneficial for the alleviation of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. However, there is a lack of clinical evidence concerning the effects of acupoint-matching on chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a parallel randomized controlled trial to evaluate the occurrence of nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy (the incidence of nausea and vomiting, frequency, VAS score, RINVR rating) as the main outcome for cancer. Quality of life, anxiety and depression scores are the secondary outcomes. Quality of life, anxiety and depression scores are the secondary phase. Use of remedy drugs, routine blood examination, and blood biochemical tests are the safety evaluation. We also compare the different effects of ST36 (single acupoint), CV12 (single acupoint), and ST36-CV12 matching groups. DISCUSSION: The results of this trial are expected to explore the effects of matching different acupoints and to offer biologic plausibility for the use of acupuncture in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial is registered with clinicaltrials.gov NCT02195921 , The date of registration was 17 July 2014.

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the numbers of chromosome in Chinese herb Salvia miltiorrhiza from 7 provinces in China, and S. flava as well as S. evansiana from Yunnan province in China.</p><p><b>METHOD</b>The young root was treated with the mixture of ice and water for 24 h, fixed with Carony's fixative for 6-12 h. After differentiating for 10-12 min with 1 mol x L(-1) hydrochloric acid at 60 'C and staining with carbol fuchsin, the section was observed under microscope.</p><p><b>RESULT</b>Chromosome numbers of S. miltiorrhiza and S.flava were 2n = 2x = 16. The numbers of S. evansiana were 2n = 4x = 32. The basic numbers of the chromosomes were x = 8. And tetraploids were observed in S. miltiorrhiza from Sichuan provices and Shandong provices.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The basic number of the chromosomes are x = 8. The chromosome numbers of S. miltiorrhiza, S.flava and S. evansiana are 16,16 and 32 respectively. As the chromosomes are the small or micro-small ones, it is difficult to use them for karyotype.</p>

RESUMO

AIM: To inquire into the effects and mechanism of Zuogui Wan (Pills for Kidney Yin) on neurocyte apoptosis in nuclei of arcuate hypothalamus (ARN) of monosodium glutamate (MSG)-liver regeneration rats, and the mechanism of liver regeneration by using optic microscope, electron microscope and in situ end labeling technology to adjust nerve-endocrine-immunity network. METHODS: Neurocyte apoptosis in ARN of the experiment rats was observed by using optic microscope, electron microscope and in situ end labeling technology. Expression of TGF-beta1 in ARN was observed by using immunohistochemistry method. RESULTS: The expression of TGF-beta1 in rats of model group was increased with the increase of ARN neurocyte apoptosis index (AI) (t = 8.3097, 12.9884, P<0.01). As compared with the rats of model group, the expression of TGF-beta1 in rats of Zuogui Wan treatment group was decreased with the significant decrease of ARN neurocyte apoptosis (t = 4.5624, 11.1420, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Brain neurocyte calcium ion overexertion and TGF-beta1 protein participate in the adjustment and control of ARN neurocyte apoptosis in MSG-liver regeneration-rats. Zuogui Wan can prevent ARN neurocyte apoptosis of MSG-liver regeneration in rats by down-regulating the expression of TGF-beta1, and influence liver regeneration through adjusting nerve-endocrine-immune network.
