RESUMO

The protection, development, and utilization of medicinal plant resources are important cornerstones of maintaining human health. However, due to factors such as the reduction of high-quality land resources, deterioration of ecological environments, and excessive and disorderly resource development, medicinal plant resources are becoming scarce, and some of them are insufficiently supplied. With the proposal of "the Belt and Road" Initiative, the cooperation between China and "the Belt and Road" partners(the countries and regions involved in "the Belt and Road" Initiative)is increasingly close, which provides a new opportunity for carrying out trade of medicinal plant resources and alleviating the problem of imbalance and relative inadequacy of medicinal plant resources in countries. This study first determined the distribution and species information of plant resources in countries and regions involved in "the Belt and Road" Initiative by investigating the database of plant distribution and that of medicinal plant resources. Then, according to the published data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES), this study identified the rare and endangered medicinal plants and the medicinal plants under trade control in countries and regions involved in "the Belt and Road" Initiative and finally sorted out the list of potential medicinal plant resources in countries and regions involved in "the Belt and Road" Initiative that can be used by China. This data resource can not only be used for the overall protection of important endangered species but also scientifically guide the development and utilization of medicinal resources, providing guidance and a theoretical basis for the sustainable development of medicinal plant resources in countries and regions involved in "the Belt and Road" Initiative.

RESUMO

Lonicera japonica Thunb is a commonly used Chinese herbal medicine, which belongs to the family Caprifoliaceae. The active components varied greatly during bud development. Research on the variation of the main active components is significant for the timely harvesting and quality control of Lonicera japonica. In this study, the attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) combined with the chemometric method was performed to investigate the variability of different harvesting periods of Lonicera japonica. The preliminary characterization from ATR-FTIR fingerprints showed various characteristic absorption peaks of the main active components from the different harvesting times, such as flavonoids, organic acids, iridoids, and volatile oils. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) scatter plots showed that there was a clear clustering trend in the samples of the same harvesting period, and the samples of the different harvesting periods could be well distinguished. Finally, further analysis by the orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) showed that there were regular changes in flavonoids, phenolic acids, iridoids, and volatile oils in different harvesting periods. Therefore, ATR-FTIR, as a novel and convenient analytical method, could be applied to evaluate the quality of Lonicera japonica.

RESUMO

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the deadliest cancers with high mortality and poor prognosis, and the investigation on new approaches and effective drugs for HCC therapy is of great significance. In our study, we demonstrate that treatment with cinobufagin, a natural compound isolated from traditional chinese medicine Chansu, reduces proliferation and the colony formation capacity of the human hepatoma cells in vitro, in addition, cinobufagin induces mitotic arrest in human hepatoma cells. The results of a network pharmacology-based analysis show that EGFR, MAPK1, PTK2, CDK2, MAPK3, ESR1, CDK1, PRKCA, AR, and CSNK2A1 are the key targets involved in the anti-tumor activities of cinobufagin, additionally, several signaling pathways such as proteoglycans in cancer, pathways in cancer, HIF-1 signaling pathway, VEGF signaling pathway, ErbB signaling pathway, and PI3K-AKT signaling pathway are identified as the potential pathways involved in the inhibitory effects of cinobufagin against HCC. Furthermore, at the molecular level, we find that cinobufagin decreases EGFR expression and CDK2 activity in human hepatoma cells. Inhibition of EGFR or CDK2 expression could not only suppress the growth of tumor cells but also enhance the inhibitory effects of cinobufagin on the proliferative potential of human hepatoma cells. We also demonstrate that EGFR positively regulates CDK2 expression. Furthermore, EGFR inhibitor gefitinib or CDK2 inhibitor CVT-313 synergistically enhances anticancer effects of cinobufagin in human hepatoma cells. Taken together, these findings indicate that cinobufagin may exert antitumor effects by suppressing EGFR-CDK2 signaling, and our study suggests that cinobufagin may be a novel, promising anticancer agent for the treatment of HCC.

RESUMO

Hyperlipidemia, a typical metabolic disorder syndrome, can cause various cardiovascular diseases. The polysaccharides were found to have enormous potential in the therapy of hyperlipidemia. This study was aimed at evaluating the ameliorative effects of polysaccharide from Turpiniae folium (TFP) in rats with hyperlipidemia. A serum metabolomic method based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to explore the detailed mechanism of TFP in rats with hyperlipidemia. The oxidative stress indicators, biochemical indexes, and inflammatory factors in serum and histopathological changes in the liver were also evaluated after 10-week oral administration of TFP in rats with high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia. TFP significantly relieved oxidative stress, inflammation, and liver histopathology and reduced blood lipid levels. Multivariate statistical approaches such as principal component analysis and orthogonal projection to latent structure square-discriminant analysis revealed clear separations of metabolic profiles among the control, HFD, and HFD+TFP groups, indicating a moderating effect of TFP on the metabolic disorders in rats with hyperlipidemia. Seven metabolites in serum, involved in glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism and aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, were selected as potential biomarkers in rats with hyperlipidemia and regulated by TFP administration. It was concluded that TFP had remarkable potential for treating hyperlipidemia. These findings provided evidence for further understanding of the mechanism of action of TFP on hyperlipidemia.

RESUMO

Objectives: A controlled open clinical study was conducted to evaluate the role of Ricnoat, a high-content complex dietary fiber powder produced by Zhuhai Aimed Biotechnology Co. Ltd., in medical nutrition therapy (MNT) to treat gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The study aimed to investigate glycemic control, lipid control, weight control, and pregnancy outcomes (neonatal weight) in patients with GDM, as well as evaluate the clinical safety of Ricnoat. Methods: A total of 120 patients with GDM who were admitted to three hospitals in Shanghai between January 2019 and January 2020 were enrolled. Ricnoat was used for intervention for patients in the experimental group. Using a χ2 test and t-test, respectively, comparisons were conducted between the measurement data and countable data of the demographics and baseline disease characteristics of the experimental group and control group. Results: Fasting blood glucose, 2-h postprandial blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, maternal gestational weight gain, neonatal weight, serum creatinine, glutamate transaminase, and aspartate aminotransferase were lower in the experimental group than in the control group, whereas high-density lipoprotein was higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Ricnoat intervention resulted in satiety higher than the expected 80% and more common occurrence of type 4 (smooth and soft, like salami or a snake) and type 5 (a soft mass with clear edges) stools. Conclusion: Ricnoat intervention had a significant effect on glycemic control, lipid control, weight control, and pregnancy outcomes (neonatal weight) in patients with GDM by enhancing maternal satiety and improving the stool features of pregnant women. It was also found to be safe for application during pregnancy.

RESUMO

Weeds is one of the important parts of agricultural ecosystem of Chinese materia medica. Weeds is a double-edged sword with advantages and disadvantages for the cultivated medicinal plants. In this study, we firstly analyzed the positive and negative effects of weeds on the yield and quality of Chinese materia medica. We then explored the possible mechanisms for the weeds' positive effects from the aspects of interspecific relationship, soil microecological environment, light environment, natural control of pests and so on. We also summarized three basic principles of weed control, that is, "making medicinal plants and weeds coexist harmoniously, achieving the overall optimum growth of medicinal plants", "prevention first, integrated control" and "preserving beneficial weeds and increasing their beneficial effects, removing harmful weeds and control their adverse effects". Finally, we introduced several common weed ecological control technology in field of the cultivated medicinal plants in China, including technology of controlling weeds by no-tillage, stral mulch, rotation, alternative herbs, competitive crops, and allelopathy. This study is aimed to apply the ecology theory to guide weed management and control, so as to achieve the goal of advantages promotion and disadvantages elimination of weeds to cultivated medicinal plants, making weeds into treasure and to promote the sustainable and healthy development of Chinese medicinal materials production and the protection of weed diversity.

RESUMO

Ecological agriculture is a crucial way for agriculture of Chinese materia medica, which emphasizes the application of ecological principles in the cultivation of traditional Chinese medicine. While long-term intensive farming and modern chemical agriculture have threatened soil health, the sustainable development of ecological agriculture of Chinese materia medica is constrained. No-til-lage can reduce both frequency and intensity of tillage. Compared with conventional agriculture, no-tillage can reduce soil disturbance, maintain no-tillage for a long or permanent period and keep mulching. The application of no-tillage has a long history. More and more studies have shown that no-tillage has many advantages over conventional tillage, and the ecological and economic benefits of no-tillage are particularly outstandingin long-term. The cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials adheres to the principle of not grabbing land from farmland, making full use of the soil resources under forests, mountains and wasteland. Reducing the risk of soil loss and sustai-nable utilization are the core issues in the process of new land cultivation. No-tillage application, which not only inherits the traditional Chinese concept of natural farming, but also integrates the laws of ecological agriculture, will become the core strategies of sustainable development of Chinese materia medica ecological agriculture. This study will introduce the basic concepts and development process of no-tillage, analyze their ecological benefits in ecological agriculture of Chinese materia medica, and put forward their application strategies.

RESUMO

It is crucial to establish a complete set of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) quality traceability management process system, in order to stabilize the pricing order of TCM market and reconstruct the transmission path of TCM quality signals. In this study, we reviewed the mature experience of food and drug supervision at home and abroad, analyzed the quality characteristics of TCM, and put forward that the quality control of TCM products can learn from the hazard analysis and critical control point(HACCP) system in food safety quality control. This study points out that the HACCP system provides not only technical guidance for the traceability management of TCM, but also ideas for improving the quality of TCM products and the safety risk control of TCM. The application of the HACCP system in TCM quality control can help establish an international dialogue platform for TCM and help realize the modernization and internationalization of TCM industry.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the antitumor effects of salidroside and preliminarily examined its underlying mechanisms by establishing a nude mouse model bearing MCF-7 breast cancer cell xenografts. METHODS: The mice were grouped and intraperitoneally injected with salidroside, paclitaxel, or physiological saline. Tumor samples were weighed, and immunohistochemical staining with hematoxylin and eosin and anti-CD34 antibody was performed. Tumor cell apoptosis was observed using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxyuridine dUTP nick end labeling assay. Bcl-1, p53, Bax, and caspase 3 expression in tumor tissues was determined via western blotting. RESULTS: The tumor inhibition rate of high-dose salidroside was 75.16%, which was significantly higher than the rates for paclitaxel and saline. A tumor tissue pathology analysis revealed that high-dose salidroside inhibited tumor cell proliferation and promoted tumor cell apoptosis. Western blotting revealed that Bcl-2 and p53 expression were significantly lower in the salidroside group than in the other groups, whereas Bax and caspase 3 (17 kDa) expression were increased. CONCLUSIONS: Salidroside was more effective than paclitaxel in inhibiting tumor growth in MCF-7 breast cancer cell-bearing nude mice. The mechanism of action may involve Bcl-2 and p53 downregulation and Bax and caspase 3 upregulation, thereby increasing proapoptotic factor expression and inducing tumor cell apoptosis.

RESUMO

Objective Transdifferentiation exists between stromal cells or between stromal cells and cancer cells. Evodiamine and berberine are predominant pharmacological components of Zuojin pill, a prescription of Traditional Chinese Medicine, playing crucial functions in remolding of tumor microenvironment. This study aimed to explore the effect of combination of evodiamine with berberine (cBerEvo) on the phenotypic transition of colon epithelial cells induced by tumor-associated fibroblasts, as well as the involved mechanisms. Methods Human normal colon epithelial cell line HCoEpiC cells were treated with the prepared conditioned medium of CCD-18Co, a human colon myofibroblast line, to induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Phase contrast microscope was used to observe the morphological changes. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers including E-cadherin, vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were observed with immunofluorescence microscopy. Migration was assessed by wound healing assay. Western blotting was used to detect the expressions of E-cadherin, vimentin, α-SMA, Snail, ZEB1 and Smads. Results In contrast to the control, the tumor-associated fibroblasts-like CCD-18Co cells induced down-regulation of E-cadherin and up-regulation of vimentin, α-SMA, Snail and ZEB1 (P<0.05), and promoted migration of HCoEpiCs (P<0.05), with over expression of Smads including Smad2, p-Smad2, Smad3, p-Smad3 and Smad4 (P<0.05), which were abolished by a transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) receptor inhibitor LY364947 and by cBerEvo in a concentration dependent manner. In addition, cBerEvo-inhibited ratios of p-Smad2/Smad2 and p-Smad3/Smad3 were also dose dependent. Conclusion The above results suggest that cBerEvo can regulate the differentiation of colon epithelial cells induced by CCD-18Co through suppressing activity of TGF-ß/Smads signaling pathway.

RESUMO

It is of great significance to carry out scientific investigation of threatened species and assess their in-situ conservation status in order to guide the conservation and management of these species within a region. In this study, we explored and assessed the biodiversity and in-situ conservation status of the threatened medicinal vascular plants(TMVPs) in central China. The results showed that there were 276 TMVPs in central China, including 18 critically endangered(CR), 77 endangered(EN), and 181 vulnerable(VU) species. Of which, 222 TMVPs were distributed in 49 national nature reserves, with an in-situ conservation rate of 80.43%. And the in-situ conservation rate of CR, EN and NR species were 83.33%, 77.92% and 81.22%, respectively. The complementary algorithm was used to select the nine national nature reserves with the highest protection and complementary contribution to the TMVPs. The cumulative protection contribution rate of these nine nature reserves was 81.98%. Fifty-four TMVPs were distributed outside of national nature reserves, while mainly distributed within 10 hotspot counties including Badong county, Hubei province, Sangzhi county, Hunan province, Jianghua Yao Autonomous county, Hunan province and so on. In general, TMVPs are well protected by the national nature reserves in central China. However, there are still some conservation gaps. It is necessary to carry out further field investigation on the species with conservation gaps and identify the gap areas, so as to provide scientific guidance for the optimization of the conservation of TMVPs in this region.

RESUMO

The study aims to investigate spatial distribution pattern and age structure of wild Angelica sinensis in Gansu province.Ten plots each with an area of 100 m2 were set and the spatial coordinates of all wild A. sinensis individuals were measured within each plot. Based on plant individual mapping data,we explored the spatial distribution pattern and its differences between different life history stages of wild A. sinensis in Gansu province by using nearest neighbor distance statistics. Correlation analysis were carried out to explore the relationship between spatial aggregation degree and topographic factors. We also distinguished individuals to three life history stages( i.e. seedlings, adults and boltings) and then test the differences among/between them using nonparametric test.(1)We found that the dominant spatial distribution pattern of wild A. sinensis population in Gansu was aggregated distribution. There was no significant correlation between spatial aggregation degree of wild A. sinensis and altitude, slope and aspect. There was no significant difference between the average distance from seedlings to their nearest bolting individuals; the average distance from adult individuals to their nearest seedlings was significantly larger than the average distance from adult individuals to their nearest adult individuals; and the average distance from bolting individuals to their nearest adult individuals was significantly smaller than the average distance from bolting individuals to their nearest bolting individuals.(2)The age structure was showed as a declining population, characterized by less seedlings and bolting individuals, while more adult individuals within population. The population characteristics of wild A. sinensis, characterized by aggregated distribution pattern and senescent type of age structure, are disadvantage to its population development. The factors, such as habitat specialization, human activities and intraspecific competition, which shapes the current population characteristics, may increase the threatened status of wild A. sinensis. We suggest to strengthen the protection of wild A. sinensis.

RESUMO

Rhizosphere bacteria play a vital role in plant nutrition absorption, growth and disease resistance. In this study,high-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze the rhizosphere bacterial communities of Salvia miltiorrhiza and S. miltiorrhiza f. alba. Moreover, the function of dominant rhizosphere bacterial communities was analyzed. We found that Sphingobacteriales,Sphingomonadales and Nitrosomonadaceae were both dominant and specific bacteria in the rhizosphere of S. miltiorrhiza. The main functions of dominant rhizosphere bacteria communities in both species include promoting transformation of soil nutrients, improving plant immunity and ability of stress tolerance. This study was the first to compare rhizobacterial communities structure and function of S. miltiorrhiza and S. miltiorrhiza f. alba, which provided a new theoretical reference for studing the rhizosphere mechanism of healthy S. miltiorrhiza planting in the future.

RESUMO

Dao-di herbs have been synonymous with quality medicinal herbs in our mind hearts since ancient times and are the essence of Chinese medicine culture. The development of genuine regional herbs faces problems such as insufficient supply of local resources and lack of competitive advantages. It is necessary to seek a suitable model to protect and develop authentic medicinal materials. The protection mode of geographical indication products has become more mature. Geographical indication(GI) products and authentic medicinal materials are all related to the origin. There is certain commonality between them. However, there are also differences between authentic Chinese herbal medicines and geographical indications, and it is unsuitable to simply equate the authentic Chinese medicinal materials with GI products. This article comprehensively combs and compares the development of the authentic Chinese herbal medicines and geographical indication products, and believes that it is necessary to fully learn from the experience of GI products and combine the characteristics of authentic medicinal materials to establish a set of protection systems that meet the characteristics of authentic medicinal materials. Through this research, it has positive significance to promote the protection and management of authentic medicinal materials.
