Background: Acupuncture therapy has been widely used in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain (MP) in many countries around the world. However, there are no bibliometric studies on acupuncture therapy for MP. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the current status, frontiers and hot spots in the use of acupuncture therapy for the treatment of MP. Methods: Literature on acupuncture therapy for MP was extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection database from 2003 to 2022. CiteSpace 6.2.R4 (64-bit) software was used to analyze the number and centrality of journals, countries, institutions, authors, references and keywords, and the functions of co-occurrence and clustering were applied to draw a visual knowledge map. Results: Over the past 20 years, the annual journal publications have been on a steady upward trend, with 438 articles published in 143 journals, including Acupuncture in Medicine Journal published the most (28, 6.39%), JAMA-Journal of the American Medical Association was the journal with the highest impact factor (IF = 120.7003), USA dominated with the most publications (140, 31.96%) among 44 countries, and among 196 research organizations Kyung Hee University was the most prolific (19, 4.34%) and Ha, In-Hyuk was the most published author (9, 2.05%). "Acupuncture" is the most popular and highly sought after keywords. "Low back pain" is the keyword with the highest centrality. Conclusion: This article provides the current situation of the use of acupuncture therapy in the treatment of MP in the past 20 years, and statistical analysis reveals that "low back pain", "knit osteoporosis" and "break cancer" are new research diseases related to acupuncture therapy for MP, and "myobasic trigger point" is a new research direction of acupuncture therapy for MP. Therefore, this study helps researchers grasp the research hotspots and provide certain references for in-depth research and future topic selection.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in clinical inpatients, and it continues a high morbidity and mortality rate despite many clinical treatment measures. AKI is triggered by infections, surgery, heavy metal exposure and drug side effects, but current chemical drugs often fall short of expectations for AKI treatment and have toxic side effects. Therefore, finding new interventions and treatments, especially of natural origin, is of remarkable clinical significance and application. The herbal monomer curcumin is a natural phenolic compound extracted from the plant Curcuma longa and showed various biological activities, including AKI. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that curcumin restores renal function by modulating the immune system and the release of inflammatory mediators, scavenging oxygen free radicals, reducing apoptosis and improving mitochondrial dynamics. However, curcumin has a low bioavailability, which limits its clinical application. For this reason, it is essential to investigate the therapeutic effects and molecular mechanisms of curcumin in AKI, as well as to improve its bioavailability for curcumin formulation development and clinical application. PURPOSE: This review summarizes the sources, pharmacokinetics, and limitations in the clinical application of curcumin and explores methods to optimize its bioavailability using nanotechnology. In particular, the therapeutic effects and molecular mechanisms of curcumin on AKI are highlighted to provide a theoretical basis for AKI treatment in clinical practices. METHODS: This review was specifically searched by means of a search of three databases (Web of Science, PubMed and Science Direct), till December 2021. Search terms were "Curcumin", "Acute kidney injury", "AKI", " Pharmacokinetics", "Mitochondria" and "Nano formulations". The retrieved data followed PRISMA criteria (preferred reporting items for systematic review) RESULTS: Studies have shown that curcumin responded to AKI-induced renal injury and restored renal tubular epithelial cell function by affecting multiple signaling pathways in AKI models induced by factors such as cisplatin, lipopolysaccharide, ischemia/reperfusion, gentamicin and potassium dichromate. Curcumin was able to affect NF-κB signaling pathway and reduce the expression of IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α, thus preventing renal inflammatory injury. In the prevention of renal tubular oxidative damage, curcumin reduced ROS production by activating the activity of Nrf2, HO-1 and PGC-1α. In addition, curcumin restored mitochondrial homeostasis by upregulating OPA1 and downregulating DRP1 expression, while reducing apoptosis by inhibiting the caspase-3 apoptotic pathway. In addition, due to the low bioavailability and poor absorption of curcumin in vivo, curcumin nanoformulations including nanoparticles, liposomes, and polymeric micelles are formulated to improve the bioavailability. CONCLUSION: This review provides new ideas for the use of curcumin in the prevention and treatment of AKI by modulating the molecular targets of several different cellular signaling pathways.

The medicinal fungus Paecilomyces tenuipes exhibits a variety of pharmacological effects, including antidepressive effects. The chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)­induced rat model has served an important role in studies involving antidepressants screening. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antidepressant­like activity of P. tenuipes N45 aqueous extract (PTNE) in a CUMS­induced rat model of behavioral despair depression. Following 4 weeks of PTNE treatment, behavioral tests were conducted to investigate the antidepressant­like activities, and the levels of neurotransmitters and hormones in blood and hypothalamus were measured. The results demonstrated that PTNE treatment significantly increased movement in the forced running test, whereas the immobility time was reduced in the hotplate test and the forced swim test in depression­model rats. PTNE treatment was able to normalize the levels of hormones and neurotransmitters in serum and hypothalamus of CUMS rats. The data demonstrated that PTNE treatment may be a potential pharmaceutical agent in treatment­resistant depression, and the effects of PTNE may be partly mediated through normalizing the levels of neurotransmitters.

The human vagina is colonized by a variety of indigenous microflora; in healthy individuals the predominant bacterial genus is Lactobacillus while those with bacterial vaginosis (BV) carry a variety of anaerobic representatives of the phylum Actinobacteria. In this study, we evaluated the antimicrobial activity of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) encapsulated in a hydrogel against Gardnerella vaginalis, one of the causative agents of BV, as well as indicating its safety for healthy human lactobacilli. Herein, it is shown that in well diffusion assays G. vaginalis is inhibited at 0.01% hydrogel-encapsulated BPO and that the tested Lactobacillus spp. can tolerate concentrations of BPO up to 2.5%. In direct contact assays (cells grown in a liquid culture containing hydrogel with 1% BPO or BPO particles), we demonstrated that hydrogels loaded with 1% BPO caused 6-log reduction of G. vaginalis. Conversely, three of the tested Lactobacillus spp. were not inhibited while L. acidophilus growth was slightly delayed. The rheological properties of the hydrogel formulation were probed using oscillation frequency sweep, oscillation shear stress sweep, and shear rate sweep. This shows the gel to be suitable for vaginal application and that the encapsulation of BPO did not alter rheological properties.

The mixture of peppermint oil (PO) with medium-chain triacylglycerol was emulsified in water and stabilized with a food-grade biopolymer, modified starch, to form PO nanoemulsions. The effects of emulsifying conditions including homogenization pressure, the number of processing cycles, and oil loading on the mean diameters and viscosities of nanoemulsions were characterized by dynamic light scattering, optical microscopy, and rheological measurements. The formulated PO nanoemulsions with mean diameters normally <200 nm showed high stability over at least 30 days of storage time. Their antimicrobial properties related to those of PO have also been evaluated by two assays, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and time-kill dynamic processes, against two Gram-positive bacterial strains of Listeria monocytogenes Scott A and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Compared with bulk PO, the PO nanoemulsions showed prolonged antibacterial activities. The results suggest that the nanoemulsion technology can provide novel applications of essential oils in extending the shelf life of aqueous food products.
