RESUMO

Sodium pyruvate is a natural metabolite commonly used in biological fields, including cell culture. This study investigated the effects of sodium pyruvate on the lifespan and other physiological characters of Drosophila melanogaster, by measuring feeding, fecundity, and spontaneous activity. The results indicated that 0.2 mol/L of sodium pyruvate increased the median lifespan of female flies by 8.33%. Moreover, the group sleep duration of female flies significantly increased by 53.98% when exposed to the sodium pyruvate concentration. However, the intake of sodium pyruvate did not significantly affect the fecundity or food intake of female flies. Our results also show that the effect of extending lifespan and increasing sleep time was dose-dependent and sex-specific. Our data provides the role of sodium pyruvate as an insect culture additive by enhancing survival.

Yingyangbao (YYB) is a soy-based micronutrient-fortified powder used in the Nutrition Improvement Project on Children in Poor Areas of China. After the baseline study in 2012, YYB intervention gradually spread to 21 provinces in China. From 2015 to 2020, a secular trend study was carried out to evaluate the body growth and nutritional status of 6-23-month-old infants and young children (IYC) under YYB intervention. The aim of this research was to investigate whether YYB intervention was associated with the improvement of body growth and development in large populations from broad areas with national and multi-year survey results. The anthropometric data collected in the baseline study and cross-sectional surveys were compared, and the correlation between YYB intake amount and body growth were analyzed. Compared with the results of the baseline study, the 6-23-month-old IYC under YYB intervention showed a significant increase in body weight, body length and Z scores since 2015, and the stunting rate decreased from 9.7% in 2012 to 5.3% in 2020. Significantly positive correlations were observed between the YYB intake amount and the body growth indicators. Therefore, YYB intervention was associated with the improvement of body growth and nutrition status of Chinese IYC. In the future, long-term and continuous efforts are still needed to further reveal the health benefits of YYB in depth.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Berry (poly)phenol consumption has been associated with cardioprotective benefits, however little is known on the role the gut microbiome may play on such health benefits. Our objective was to investigate the effects of aronia berry (poly)phenol consumption on cardiometabolic health and gut microbiome richness and composition in prehypertensive middle-aged men and women. METHODS: A total of 102 prehypertensive participants were included in a parallel 12-week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Volunteers were randomly allocated to daily consume an encapsulated (poly)phenol-rich aronia berry extract (Aronia, n = 51) or a matched maltodextrin placebo (Control, n = 51). Blood pressure (BP) and arterial function (office and 24 h), endothelial function (measured as flow-mediated dilation), serum biochemistry (including blood lipids), plasma and urine (poly)phenol metabolites as well as gut microbiome composition through shotgun metagenomic sequencing were monitored over the study period. Relationships between vascular outcomes, (poly)phenol metabolites and gut microbiome were investigated using an integrated multi-levels approach. RESULTS: A significant improvement in arterial indices measured as augmentation index (AIx) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) was found in the Aronia compared to Control group (awake Δ PWV = -0.24 m/s; 95% CI: -0.79, -0.01 m/s, P < 0.05; 24 h peripheral Δ AIx = -6.8; -11.2, -2.3, %, P = 0.003; 24 h central Δ AIx = -3.3; -5.5, -1.0, %, P = 0.006). No changes in BP, endothelial function or blood lipids were found following the intervention. Consumption of aronia (poly)phenols led to a significant increase in gut microbiome gene richness and in the abundance of butyrate-producing species such as Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus and Intestinimonas butyriciproducens species, compared to Control group. Results from an approach including metabolomic, metagenomic and clinical outcomes highlighted associations between aronia-derived phenolic metabolites, arterial stiffness, and gut microbiome. CONCLUSIONS: Aronia berry (poly)phenol consumption improved arterial function in prehypertensive middle-aged individuals, possibly via modulation of gut microbiome richness and composition based on the associations observed between these parameters. BACKGROUND: In 2017, the Chinese government launched a pilot project in hospice care (HC), in which Shanghai was a pioneer. Healthcare provider knowledge, attitudes, and practices in hospice care (KAPHC) may facilitate or hinder HC development. To determine how to design targeted training for healthcare providers and policies to improve their KAPHC, we conducted an original study based on an indigenized KAPHC scale to (a) comprehensively measure the KAPHC baseline of healthcare providers in Shanghai and (b) explore its influencing factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate healthcare providers' KAPHC with the indigenized KAPHC scale. Descriptive analysis, linear regression, and Pearson's (r) correlation analysis were performed to uncover providers' KAPHC, its influencing factors, and their correlations. RESULTS: The KAPHC scale proved applicable to the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the large sample of providers we surveyed. The 7027 KAPHC scaling results revealed that 42.44% of participants had HC experience and 57.49% were willing to provide HC. The mean accuracy of the responses related to knowledge was 59.30%. Scoring rates for attitudes, confidence, and self-reported practices were 74.20%, 73.96%, and 75.55%, respectively. The linear regression revealed that higher KAPHC scores were associated with experience and willingness and varied with professional specializations. The Pearson's (r) correlation evidenced that HC practices were strongly correlated with confidence (r = 0.648, P<.001) and moderately correlated with attitudes (r = 0.463, P<.001). CONCLUSION: We uncovered that targeted training for enhancing healthcare provider KAPHC in Shanghai should focus on psychological and spiritual care, the management of pain and other symptoms, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Additionally, training should be scaled up for providers with different characteristics. Meanwhile, policy should encourage providers to work enthusiastically in HC-universal high-quality HC requires well-trained, supported, and motivated providers.

Dissimilatory arsenate-respiring prokaryotes (DARPs) are considered to be the major drive of the reductive mobilization of arsenic from solid phases. However, it is not fully understood how phosphate, a structural analog of arsenate, affects the DARPs-mediated arsenic mobilization. This work aimed to address this issue. As-contaminated soils were collected from a Shimen Realgar Mine-affected area. We identified a unique diversity of DARPs from the soils, which possess high As(V)-respiring activities using one of multiple small organic acids as the electron donor. After elimination of the desorption effect of phosphate on the As mobilization, the supplement of additional 10 mM phosphate to the active slurries markedly increased the microbial community-mediated reductive mobilization of arsenic as revealed by microcosm tests; this observation was associated to the fact that phosphate significantly increased the As(V)-respiratory reductase (Arr) gene abundances in the slurries. To confirm this finding, we further obtained a new DARP strain, Priestia sp. F01, from the samples. We found that after elimination of the chemical effect of phosphate, the supplement of 10 mM phosphate to the active slurries resulted in an 82.2% increase of the released As(III) in the solutions, which could be contributed to that excessive phosphate greatly increased the Arr gene abundance, and enhanced the transcriptional level of arrA gene and the bacterial As(V)-respiring activity of F01 cells. Considering that phosphate commonly coexists with As in the environment, and is a frequently-used fertilizer, these findings are helpful for deeply understanding why As concentrations in contaminated groundwater are dynamically fluctuated, and also provided new knowledge on the interactions between the biogeochemical processes of P and As.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The genus Elsholtzia (family Labiaceae) is an important source of folk traditional Chinese medicine, mainly used to relieve the symptoms of cold, fever, pneumonia and so on. However, currently available data on its traditional and pharmacological advantages have not been comprehensively reviewed. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review provides up-to-date and comprehensive information on the ethnopharmacological, phytochemical, pharmacological properties and toxicity of Elsholtzia, highlights the antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory advantages of the genus, and explores its therapeutic potential. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Use Google Scholar, Scifinder, PubMed, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, Web of Science and other online database search to collect the research literatures on application, chemistry and biological activity of Elsholtzia published before December 2021. Their scientific names have been verified using The Plant List and World Flora Online websites. RESULTS: A total of 42 species of Elsholtzia are widely distributed all over the world, especially in Yunnan Province (China). Since Elsholtzia genus is commonly used in the folk to treat respiratory infectious diseases such as cold and fever, growing numbers of studies have confirmed their antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. So far, about 221 non-volatile compounds and 1008 volatile compounds have been identified from Elsholtzia plants, mainly containing flavonoids and terpenoids showing convincing antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities. Further research found that their antibacterial and antiviral spectrums are broad, and volatile oils are considered to be the main antibacterial components. Their anti-inflammatory mechanism is mainly through the inhibition of NF-κB and MAPKs signaling pathways. Toxicological studies have not established its toxicity. CONCLUSIONS: By summarizing the latest information on genus Elsholtzia, their traditional uses, material basis and mechanisms of action in antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory aspects were described, providing new insights for the genus and its importance as a potential natural resource of antiviral and anti-inflammatory drugs, giving evidence and new ideas for the development of herbal medicines.

BACKGROUND: Most studies focus on the geographically larger production areas in tea traceability. However, famous high-quality tea is often produced in a narrow range of origins, which makes traceability a challenge. In this study, Taiping Houkui (TPHK) green tea of narrow geographical origin was rapidly identified using Fourier-transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy. RESULTS: First, spectral information of 114 TPHK samples from four production areas was acquired. Second, the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) was used to balance the sample data set, and three different spectral pre-processing methods were compared. Third, three feature variable selection algorithms were used to obtain the pre-processed spectral features. Finally, extreme learning machine (ELM) models based on the variables obtained from the selected features were established to trace the TPHK origin. The optimized ELM model achieves 95.35% classification accuracy in the test set. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates that the optimized variable selection method in combination with NIR spectroscopy represents a suitable strategy for tea traceability in narrow regions. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are the second most abundant carbohydrates in colostrum. In this study, we performed a quantitative analysis of 13 oligosaccharides in 99 colostrum samples obtained from mothers living in Northwest China. The analysis combined liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with 2-amino-N-(2-aminoethyl)benzamide (AEAB) labeling and nonsecretors accounted for 17%. Compared with healthy secretor mothers, those with gestational diabetes mellitus presented lower levels of sialylated oligosaccharides, especially 3'-sialyllactose. Colostrum from mothers with pregnancy-induced hypertension had higher levels of fucosylated oligosaccharides, but the difference was not significant, and hypothyroidism appeared to have no effect on HMOs. Most HMOs (especially 6'-sialyllactose) were more abundant in colostrum from mothers who underwent vaginal delivery than a C-section. These findings show that the concentration of total or individual HMOs is affected by multiple factors. These findings provide a reference for evaluating variations in HMO expression among different populations and potential guidance for providing personalized clinical nutrition.

Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) that prevents and alleviates the degenerative changes associated with aging has been receiving extensive attention. In our present work, the ageing model was induced by injection of 500 mg kg-1D-galactose daily for a period of eight weeks. The D-galactose-induced ageing mice model was used for evaluating the effect of GSPE on oxidative stress, inflammation levels and gut microbiota composition. D-Galactose induced oxidative damage and inflammation with a significant increase in malondialdehyde contents, myeloperoxidase activities and the levels of TNF-α and IL-1ß, as well as a reduction in the activities of glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione. Treatment with different doses of GSPE could significantly improve the antioxidant capacity and inflammation levels in the liver and brain, which is accompanied by increased Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Akkermansia, as well as decreased Helicobacter and Alistipes. In addition, the high-dose GSPE group exhibited greater potential to delay the ageing process than the low-dose group. Our results also showed that GSPE administration could downregulate the NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathway for inhibiting inflammation levels in the brain tissue. This study provided a novel strategy to target the gut microbiota with regard to the effect of GSPE administration on alleviating aging-induced alterations via the gut microbiota-liver axis and gut microbiota-brain axis.

Pudilan antiphlogistic oral liquid (PDL) is a commercial traditional Chinese medicine widely used in the treatment of a variety of inflammatory diseases. However, the specific mechanisms of PDL's anti-inflammatory effects have not been fully understood. In this research, five classic inflammatory models and a network pharmacology-based strategy were utilized to evaluate its anti-inflammatory efficacy and elucidate its multicomponent and multitarget mode of the anti-inflammatory mechanism. A systems pharmacology approach was carried out via a holistic process of active compound screening, target acquisition, network construction, and further analysis. The potential component-target-associated anti-inflammatory mechanisms of PDL were further verified both in vivo and in vitro. The results showed that PDL exhibited a proven anti-inflammatory effect on multiple types of inflammatory models, including ß-hemolytic streptococcus-induced acute pharyngitis, LPS-induced acute lung injury, xylene-induced ear swelling, carrageenan-induced paw edema, and acetic acid-induced capillary permeability-increasing models. Systems pharmacology analysis predicted 45 ingredients of PDL that interact with 185 targets, of which 38 overlapped with the inflammation-related targets. Furthermore, KEGG pathway analysis showed that the predicted targets were mainly involved in hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), and NOD-like receptor (NLR) pathways. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments clarified that PDL has anti-inflammatory potency by inhibiting PI3K and p38 phosphorylation and activating the NLRP3 inflammasome. Our results suggested that PDL has an efficient and extensive anti-inflammatory effect, and its anti-inflammatory mechanisms may involve multiple inflammatory-associated signaling pathways, including HIF-1- and TNF-mediated pathways and NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

BACKGROUND: Constipation is a common complication after stroke, which seriously affects patients' quality of life and recovery. Many evidences show that acupuncture and moxibustion therapy has advantages in the treatment of constipation after stroke. But different types of acupuncture and moxibustion have different effects, and there is no research to prove which one is more effective. METHODS: According to the search strategy, we will retrieve the randomized controlled studies of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of constipation after stroke from China Knowledge Network, Wanfang, VIP, China Biomedical medicine, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library databases. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to July 2021. Studies will be screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the quality of the studies will be assessed using the Cochrane Risk Bias Assessment Tool. All data analyses will be performed using Revman 5.4, Gemtc 0.14.3, and Stata 14.0. Finally, we will evaluate the strength of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation method. RESULTS: In this study, the efficacy of different acupuncture and moxibustion therapies in the treatment of constipation after stroke will be evaluated by evaluating defecation frequency, stool property score, constipation symptom score, quality of life score, adverse reactions, etc. CONCLUSIONS: This study will provide reliable evidence-based evidence for selecting the best acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for constipation after stroke.

Food ingredients have shown beneficial effect in delaying aging and extend lifespan. There are Chinese herbal medicines in the category of "homology of medicine and food". In order to find out whether these herbal medicines can act as food component to slow aging, this study selected 12 Chinese herbal medicines containing strong antioxidant components, Canarium album, Amomum villosum, Elsholtzia splendens, Foeniculum vulgare, Fructus hordei germinatus, stir-baked Fructus hordei germinatus, Lilium brownie, Citrus medica, Sophora japonica, Myristica fragrans, Herba houttuyniae, Carthamus tinctoriu, and examined the effects on lifespan using Drosophila melanogaster as the model organism. Our results show that the extracts of the 12 Chinese herbal medicines have various effects on longevity. Some reduced the lifespan in both sexes. Some only shortened the lifespan in one sex. Some have no significant effect in both sexes. There are two herbal medicine extended lifespan, but only in females. The present results suggest that herbal medicines may provide potential candidates for anti-aging ingredients.

Interventional anesthetic techniques are an integral component of a biopsychosocial approach and multidisciplinary treatment. Injection techniques are often used to diagnose disorders, decrease the need for surgery, or increase the time to surgery. The role of neural blockade techniques using local anesthetics and steroids in the assessment and treatment of pain continues to be refined. With the current opioid crisis and an aging population with increasing medical comorbidities, there is an emphasis on the use of nonopioid, nonsurgical, and multimodal therapies to treat chronic pain. This article reviews indications, goals, and methods of common injection techniques.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a complex skin disease with highly heterogeneous inflammation, which ranks among the largest component of the nonfatal diseases worldwide. The medications currently used to treat AD primarily include antihistamines, vitamin D and anti-inflammatory drugs, etc. But, the usage of these drugs is usually accompanied by various side-effects. Formononetin (FMN), a natural active ingredient of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge, decreases the AD relapse rate, reduces recurring severity incidence and resists the inflammation in the initial stage of AD. However, the underlying mechanism of FMN on repressing the development of AD is still unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the potential mechanism of FMN on relieving the initial responses of AD and elucidate its possible therapeutic targets in vivo and in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-induced mouse model of the initial stage of AD was established in vivo. Human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells were co-stimulated with tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (Poly(I:C)) in vitro. The production of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and immunoglobulin E (IgE) were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbnent assay (ELISA). The protein expression was measured through immunohistochemistry and western blotting. The mRNA expression was examined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The impact of TNF-α-induced protein 3 (TNFAIP3/A20) was reflected using its small interfering RNA (siRNA). The role of G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) was explored using its agonist (G1), antagonist (G15) or siRNA (siGPER) in vitro. RESULTS: We found that FMN upregulated the expression of A20 protein and mRNA in the initial stage of AD model, especially in the epithelial region of ear tissue, and inhibited the production of TSLP simultaneously. Consistently, FMN significantly upregulated A20 protein and its mRNA expression while reduced TSLP protein and its mRNA expression in vitro, and this effect could be antagonized by A20 siRNA (siA20). Moreover, compared with PPT (ERα agonist) and DPN (ERß agonist), G1 could significantly increase the expression of A20. In addition, compared with MPP (ERα antagonist) and PHTPP (ERß antagonist), G15 could markedly reduce the expression of A20. Furthermore, the effects of FMN on A20 were interfered by siGPER and G15 in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrated that FMN attenuated AD by upregulating A20 expression via activation of GPER. This new strategy might have effective therapeutic potential for AD and other inflammatory disorders.

Background and Objective: Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the terminal stage of the disease characterized by declined lung function, malnutrition, and poor prognosis. Such patients cannot tolerate long-time sports rehabilitation owing to dyspnea and fail to achieve the desired therapeutic effect; therefore, increasing nutritional support will be an important strategy for them. The present study applied metabolomics technology to evaluate the correlation between serum concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) metabolites, nutritional status, and lung function in patients with COPD to provide a theoretical basis for accurate nutritional support. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 82 patients with stable severe COPD in our hospital. The general characteristics including height, weight, and lung function were recorded. Metabolomics was used to detect the concentrations of serum metabolites of n-3 and n-6 at baseline and at 24 and 52 weeks after enrollment. The correlations between nutrition level and pulmonary function and clinical indicators were evaluated. Results: The concentrations of n-3 and n-6 increased over time along with the progression of COPD. Body mass index (BMI) and percent of ideal body weight (IBW%) decreased with disease development, and BMI was found to be significantly correlated with FEV1% predicted and FEV1/FVC. Serum levels of n-6 metabolites such as linoleic acid (LA), γ-linoleic acid (GLA), and arachidonic acid (ARA) (all P < 0.01) and the n-3 metabolites such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (all P < 0.05) showed significant correlations with BMI and were closely correlated with FEV1% predicted and FEV1/FVC of lung function (all P< 0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that malnutrition in patients with severe COPD is progressive and is positively correlated with n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and lung function.

Lake sediments, as an important emission source of nutrients and greenhouse gases, play a crucial role during the biogeochemical cycle processes. However, the impact mechanisms of different nutrient levels on greenhouse gas emission from lakes are still insufficient. In this study, the sediments from eight shallow lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River were cultured to study the release characteristics of greenhouse gases more than one month. Results showed that the greenhouse gases during the mineralization processes of sediments were mainly released to the atmosphere instead of being dissolved in the overlying water. The released concentrations of CH4 and CO2 were as high as 1 × 103 µmol L-1 in the later stage of the experiment, while the concentration of N2O was relatively low with a maximal value of about 10 µmol L-1. In addition, all the lake sediments displayed a nutrient release to the overlying water, where the concentrations of TC, TOC, TN, NH4+-N and TP were up to 173.0, 102.7, 36.7, 30.8 and 6.34 mg L-1, respectively. The nutrient levels of different lake sediments are symmetrical to the released nutrients concentrations in the overlying water. The further statistical analysis illustrated a synchronous nutrient controlled-release of greenhouse gases, that is, the higher the levels of nutrients in the sediments, the higher the concentrations of greenhouse gases released. These findings provide a better understanding that the control of endogenous nutrient levels of sediments is extremely important for lacustrine management, which can play a positive role in mitigating the greenhouse gas emissions from lake sediments.

Chinese herbal tea has a long history in China, and is one of the most consumed beverage products as of now. However, whether herbal tea can really promote health and be considered as a functional food is still a question. The objective of this work was to assess the beneficial effect of herbal tea on health using Drosophila as the model. Adding commercially available herbal tea to food could increase average life span of fruit flies for more than 50%. Further tests showed that the effect of herbal tea was not dependent on specific single ingredient. The present results suggest that Chinese herbal tea may have beneficial effects to human health.

BACKGROUND: Altered expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) is known to contribute to cancer progression. miR-23b and miR-27b, encoded within the same miRNA cluster, are reported to have both tumor suppressive and oncogenic activity across human cancers, including breast cancer. METHODS: To clarify this dichotomous role in breast cancer, miR-23b and miR-27b were knocked out using CRISPR/Cas9 gene knockout technology, and the role of endogenous miR-23b and miR-27b was examined in a breast cancer model system in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: Characterization of the knockout cells in vitro demonstrated that miR-23b and miR-27b are indeed oncogenic miRNAs in MCF7 breast cancer cells. miR-23b and miR-27b knockout reduced tumor growth in xenograft nude mice fed a standard diet, supporting their oncogenic role in vivo. However, when xenograft mice were provided a fish-oil diet, miR-27b depletion, but not miR-23b depletion, compromised fish-oil-induced suppression of xenograft growth, indicating a context-dependent nature of miR-27b oncogenic activity. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that miR-23b and miR-27b are primarily oncogenic in MCF7 breast cancer cells and that miR-27b may have tumor suppressive activity under certain circumstances.

Black phosphorus (BP) nanostructures with unique layer-dependent properties have been extensively applied in the fields of electronic devices, energy conversion and storage, and nanomedicine. As a narrow band gap semiconductor, they are expected to show strong second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence. However, there is no report on the NIR-II fluorescence of free-standing BP nanostructures, which have great potential in the NIR-II fluorescence bioimaging because of their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Here, for the first time, we report that the BP nanoparticles modified with cholesterol exhibit strong NIR-II fluorescence and can be encapsulated with the PEGylated lipid to form BP@lipid-PEG nanospheres for in vitro and in vivo NIR-II imaging. The resultant BP@lipid-PEG nanospheres exhibit broad emissions from 900 to 1650 nm under excitation by an 808 nm laser and have 8% quantum yield of that of standard dye IR-26. We also show that the NIR-II fluorescence image acquired with emission beyond 1400 nm has the sharpest contrast and can be used to in situ measure the diameter of blood vessels. In addition to NIR-II fluorescence imaging, we also show the potential of BP@lipid-PEG nanospheres in photoacoustic (PA) imaging. Both the long-wavelength NIR-II fluorescence imaging and PA imaging reveal that the as-fabricated BP@lipid-PEG nanospheres can be gradually metabolized by the liver in 48 h, thus making them promising for bioapplications.

This study aimed to explore the nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance of the horizontal submerged constructed wetland (HSCW) with Ti-bearing blast furnace slag (T). Another two HSCWs, with the converter steelmaking slag (G) and the stone (S) as wetland substrates, respectively, were simultaneously running as control. The results showed that the nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacities of the T-HSCW were generally better than those of another two HSCWs. When the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 6 days, the effluent concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and total nitrogen (TN) were 6.66 mg L-1 and 14.02 mg L-1, respectively, and the removal rates of NH4+-N and TN reached 77.54% and 71.07%, respectively. The T-HSCW had better removal efficiency of phosphorus. The effluent concentration of total phosphorus (TP) was lower than 0.3 mg L-1, and the maximum removal rate could reach 98%. Through the characterization of the three substrates before and after experiments, it was found that the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by T and G mainly relied on chemical adsorption, while S mainly relied on physical adsorption. Ti could also promote the absorption of nitrogen by plants and increase the nitrogen removal capacity of T-HSCWs.
