RESUMO

Background: In chronic renal failure (CRF), evaluating treatment efficacy and predicting prognosis is crucial. High Mobility Group Protein B1 (HMGB1) and Nod-like Receptor Protein 3 (NLRP3) were chosen as key markers in chronic renal failure to elucidate their roles in treatment response and prognosis, offering potential insights for enhancing patient care strategies. Objective: This study aims to analyze the clinical impact of HMGB1 and NLRP3 in patients with CRF undergoing hemodialysis. We investigated the relationship between HMGB1 and NLRP3 levels, the efficacy of hemodialysis treatment, and the prognosis for one-year survival. Methods: An observational study was conducted. The study included 62 CRF patients (Group A) admitted to our hospital from May 2020 to August 2022, and 40 healthy individuals undergoing routine medical check-ups during the same period (Group B). We compared the levels of HMGB1 and NLRP3 in the peripheral blood of Group A and Group B. Furthermore, we assessed changes in HMGB1 and NLRP3 before and after hemodialysis in CRF patients to evaluate treatment efficacy and prognostic indicators for one-year survival. Results: Group A exhibited significantly lower HMGB1 expression and higher NLRP3 expression compared to Group B. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that the areas under the curve (AUCs) for HMGB1 and NLRP3 in predicting effective hemodialysis for CRF were 0.884 (95% CI: 0.800-0.968) and 0.721 (95% CI: 0.594-0.848), respectively. The AUCs for HMGB1 and NLRP3 in predicting death from CRF were 0.885 (95% CI: 0.804-0.967) and 0.935 (95% CI: 0.875-0.995), respectively. Conclusions: Both HMGB1 and NLRP3 levels serve as valuable indicators for assessing the efficacy and prognosis of CRF patients undergoing hemodialysis.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aims to compare the efficacy of ureteroscopy with holmium laser lithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in treating ureteral calculus (UC). Methods: We enrolled 86 patients with UC treated in our urology department from November 2020 to November 2022. Group A (n=43) underwent ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy, while Group B (n=43) received ESWL. We recorded treatment duration, post-treatment hematuria duration, and post-treatment stone clearance rates. Renal function and stress response were assessed before and 3 days after treatment. Post-treatment complications were documented, and patient quality of life was evaluated using the SF-36 health questionnaire. Results: Group A exhibited significantly shorter treatment and post-treatment hematuria durations compared to Group B (P < .05). In stones >1 cm, group A demonstrated a higher clearance rate (P < .05). Post-treatment, Group A showed improved renal function and lower stress response (P < .05). The incidence of post-treatment complications did not differ significantly between groups (P > .05), but SF-36 scores were higher in Group A (P < .05). Conclusions: Ureteroscopy with holmium laser lithotripsy proves effective in UC treatment, contributing to a shortened recovery period and enhanced patient quality of life.

RESUMO

A new positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus, tentatively named "Valeriana jatamansi tymovirus 1" (VaJV1, OQ730267), was isolated from Valeriana jatamansi Jones displaying symptoms of vein-clearing in Yunnan Province, China. The complete genome of VaJV1 consists of 6,215 nucleotides and contains three open reading frames (ORFs). The genome structure of VaJV1 is typical of members of the genus Tymovirus. BLASTn analysis and multiple sequence alignments showed that the complete genome and coat protein of VaJV1 shared the most sequence similarity (65.5% nucleotides and 50.5% amino acid sequence identity) with an isolate of the tymovirus okra mosaic virus (NC_009532). Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that VaJV1 clustered most closely with other tymoviruses. We propose that Valeriana jatamansi tymovirus 1 represents a new species within the genus Tymovirus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Spiraea is a genus of deciduous shrubs that contains 80-120 species, is mainly distributed in the Northern Hemisphere and has diversified in East Asia. Spiraea species are cultivated as ornamental plants and some are used in traditional herbal medicine. Based on morphological characteristics and genetic markers, phylogenetic classification exhibits low discriminatory power. RESULTS: In present study, we assembled and characterized the chloroplast (cp) genomes of ten Spiraea species and comparatively analysed with five reported cp genomes of this genus. The cp genomes of the fifteen Spiraea species, ranging from 155,904 to 158,637 bp in length, were very conserved and no structural rearrangements occurred. A total of 85 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 37 tRNAs and 8 rRNAs were annotated. We also examined 1,010 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci, most of which had A/T base preference. Comparative analysis of cp genome demonstrated that single copy and non-coding regions were more divergent than the inverted repeats (IRs) and coding regions and six mutational hotspots were detected. Selection pressure analysis showed that all PCGs were under purifying selection. Phylogenetic analysis based on the complete cp genome data showed that Spiraea formed a monophyletic group and was further divided into two major clades. Infrageneric classification in each clade was supported with a high resolution value. Moreover, the phylogenetic trees based on each individual mutational hotspot segment and their combined dataset also consisted of two major clades, but most of the phylogenetic relationships of interspecies were not well supported. CONCLUSIONS: Although the cp genomes of Spiraea species exhibited high conservation in genome structure, gene content and order, a large number of polymorphism sites and several mutation hotspots were identified in whole cp genomes, which might be sufficiently used as molecular markers to distinguish Spiraea species. Phylogenetic analysis based on the complete cp genome indicated that infrageneric classification in two major clades was supported with high resolution values. Therefore, the cp genome data of the genus Spiraea will be effective in resolving the phylogeny in this genus.

RESUMO

Owing to the advancement in pharmaceutical technology, traditional Chinese medicine industry has seen rapid development. Preferring conventional manufacturing mode, pharmaceutical enterprises of traditional Chinese medicine have no effective process detection tools and process control methods. As a result, the quality of the final products mainly depends on testing and the quality is inconsistent in the same batch. Process analytical technology(PAT) for traditional Chinese medicine manufacturing, as one of the key advanced manufacturing techniques, can break through the bottleneck in quality control of medicine manufacturing, thus improving the production efficiency and product quality and reducing the material and energy consumption. It is applicable to the process control and real-time release of advanced manufacturing modes such as intelligent manufacturing and continuous manufacturing. This paper summarized the general idea of PAT for traditional Chinese medicine manufacturing. Through the analysis of the characteristics and status quo of the technology, we summed up the methodology for the continuous application and improvement of PAT during the whole life-cycle of traditional Chinese medicine. The five key procedures(process understanding, process detection, process modeling, process control, and continuous improvement) were summarized, and the application was reviewed. Finally, we proposed suggestions for the technical and regulatory challenges in implementing PAT in traditional Chinese medicine industry. This paper aims to provide a reference for development and application of PAT in advanced manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing, and continuous manufacturing of traditional Chinese medicine industry.

RESUMO

Here, we report the simple construction of a supramolecular glycomaterial for the targeted delivery of antibiotics to P. aeruginosa in a photothermally-controlled manner. A galactose-pyrene conjugate (Gal-pyr) was developed to self-assemble with graphene nanoribbon-based nanowires via π-π stacking to produce a supramolecular glycomaterial, which exhibits a 1250-fold enhanced binding avidity toward a galactose-selective lectin when compared to Gal-pyr. The as-prepared glycomaterial when loaded with an antibiotic that acts as an inhibitor of the bacterial folic acid biosynthetic pathway eradicated P. aeruginosa-derived biofilms under near-infrared light irradiation due to the strong photothermal effect of the nanowires accelerating antibiotic release.

RESUMO

Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz (Bignoniaceae), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, possesses various biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anticancer. In order to guide the practical application of O. indicum in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries, we evaluated the effects of five different extraction techniques (maceration extraction (ME), oxhlet extraction (SOXE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), tissue-smashing extraction (TSE), and accelerated-solvent extraction (ASE)) with 70% ethanol as the solvent on the phytochemical properties and biological potential. The UHPLC-DAD Orbitrap Elite MS technique was applied to characterize the main flavonoids in the extracts. Simultaneously, the antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities of the tested extracts were analyzed. SOXE extract showed the highest total phenolic content (TPC, 50.99 ± 1.78 mg GAE/g extract), while ASE extract displayed the highest total flavonoid content (TFC, 34.92 ± 0.38 mg RE/g extract), which displayed significant correlation with antioxidant activity. The extract obtained using UAE was the most potent inhibitor of tyrosinase (IC50: 16.57 ± 0.53 mg·mL-1), while SOXE extract showed the highest activity against α-glucosidase (IC50: 1.23 ± 0.09 mg·mL-1), succeeded by UAE, ME, ASE, and TSE extract. In addition, multivariate analysis suggested that different extraction techniques could significantly affect the phytochemical properties and biological activities of O. indicum. To sum up, O. indicum displayed expected biological potential and the data collected in this study could provide an experimental basis for further investigation in practical applications.

RESUMO

Vernonia anthelmintica Willd (VA) is a popular medicinal plant used in local and traditional medicine to manage various disorders. In order to explore the phytochemical profile, antioxidant and enzyme modulatory activities of extracts prepared from the seeds of VA, different extraction methodologies, including modern (accelerated-ASE, ultrasound-UAE, and tissue smashing-TSE extractions) and traditional (maceration and Soxhlet) extractions, were employed and their effects on the activities of the extracts were investigated. The chemical compounds of the extracts were qualitatively analyzed by ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-Orbitrap-MS) technique. Among them, 11 compounds were undoubtedly identified by comparison with reference substance, while 13 compounds were tentatively identified by comparison with literature data, including 8 phenolic acids, 14 flavonoids and 2 esters were identified in the extracts. Additionally, the quantitative analysis found that ASE showed the highest extraction efficiency. The antioxidant activity was determined in vitro via six standard assays. Two key enzymes related to the diseases of vitiligo (tyrosinase) and type II diabetes (α-glucosidase) were adopted to assess the activity of VA extracts against them. All extracts showed potent antioxidant ability with a predominance for that obtained by ASE, which corroborated with the high phenolic (22.62 ± 0.23 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g extract) and flavonoid contents (68.85 ± 0.25 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g extract). The extracts obtained by ASE, UAE and SE could increase the tyrosinase activity and all the extracts displayed remarkable inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase. This study demonstrated that the VA extracts obtained by novel extraction techniques such as ASE, could be considered as a positive candidate to be utilized by the food and medical industries, not only for obtaining bioactive compounds to be used as natural antioxidants, but possibly also for its health benefits for therapeutic bio-product development.

RESUMO

To realize the real-time monitoring of the production process of Yangxue Qingnao Granules and improve the inter-batch consistency of granule quality in the granulation process, this study established a near-infrared quantitative prediction model of moisture, particle size, bulk density, and angle of repose in the fluidized bed granulation process of Yangxue Qingnao Granules based on near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS). The near-infrared spectra were collected from 355 samples in 12 batches in the granulation process by integrating the sphere detection module of the near-infrared spectrometer. In combination with the pretreatment methods such as the first derivative, multiplicative scatter correction(MSC), and standard normal variate(SNV), the model was established by partial least squares(PLS) regression. The root mean square error of prediction(RMSEP) of moisture was 0.347 and R_P~2 was 0.935. The RMSEP of the D_(50) particle size model was 38.4 and R_P~2 was 0.980. The RMSEPs of bulk density and angle of repose were 0.018 8 and 0.879, with R_P~2 of 0.085 9 and 0.958. The results showed that the prediction of the PLS quantitative model combined with NIRS was accurate, and this model can be applied to the monitoring of key quality attributes in the fluidized bed granulation of Chinese medicinal granules in the production scale.

RESUMO

Physical attributes of Chinese herbal extracts are determined by their chemical components, and the physical and chemical attributes jointly affect the preparation process performance and the final product quality. Therefore, in order to improve the quality control of Chinese herbal extracts, we should comprehensively study the batch-to-batch consistency of physical and chemical attributes as well as the correlations between them. This paper first explored the physical attributes affecting the preparation process performance of the compound Danshen extract and developed a method for characterizing the texture attributes. With such main chemical components as water, phenolic acids, saponins, and saccharides and texture, rheology, and other physical attributes taken into consideration, the batch-to-batch quality fluctuation of products from different production lines and time was analyzed by principal components analysis(PCA). Finally, the correlation and partial least squares(PLS) analysis was conducted, and the regression equation was established. The fitting result of the PLS model for dynamic viscosity was satisfying(R~2Y=0.857, Q~2=0.793), suggesting that the chemical components could be adjusted by the component transfer rate in the extraction process, the impurity removal rate in the alcohol precipitation process, and the water retention rate of the concentration process to meet the control of the extract dynamic viscosity. This study clarified the correlations between physical and chemical attributes of the compound Danshen extract and established a method for controlling its physical attributes based on process regulation, which would provide reference for improving the quality control of Chinese herbal extracts.

RESUMO

The unsatisfactory efficacy of conventional theranostic agents in ablating tumor poses urgent demands on the development of high-performance integrated theranostic agents utilizing rising nanotechnology. To cope with the existing limitations, here we presented an intelligent nanoplatform based on yolk-shell Fe3O4@polydopamine prepared by mussel-inspired polydopamine chemistry and sacrificial template method as well as subsequent incorporation of Pt nanoparticles and chlorine 6 (Ce6) by in situ reduction and electrostatic adsorption for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal (PTT). The resultant nanoplatform could effectively deliver photosensitizer Ce6 to tumor sites, then promoting the decomposition of endogenous H2O2 to oxygen, finally achieving enhanced PDT therapy, which is demonstrated by in vitro and in vivo evaluations. Importantly, the generated oxygen bubbles could improve the echogenicity signal of yolk-shell microspheres and thereby provide enhanced ultrasonic (US) signal for imaging solid tumors. Overall, the synergistic combination of magnetic Fe3O4, green polydopamine, catalytic Pt nanoparticles, photosensitive Ce6 enabled the hybrid nanoplatform to have good biocompatibility, efficient tumor accumulation, excellent phototherapy efficiency, high T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence imaging ability (FL). Our study integrating the merits of PDT/PTT and US/MRI/FL into a single nanoplatform will open an avenue of therapeutic strategy toward biomedical applications.

RESUMO

Tyrosinase (TYR) inhibitors are in great demand in the food, cosmetic and medical industrials due to their important roles. Therefore, the discovery of high-quality TYR inhibitors is always pursued. Natural products as one of the most important sources of bioactive compounds discovery have been increasingly used for TYR inhibitors screening. However, due to their complex compositions, it is still a great challenge to rapid screening and identification of biologically active components from them. In recent years, with the help of separation technologies and the affinity and intrinsic activity of target enzymes, two advanced approaches including affinity screening and inhibition profiling showed great promises for a successful screening of bioactive compounds from natural sources. This review summarises the recent progress of separation-based methods for TYR inhibitors screening, with an emphasis on the principle, application, advantage, and drawback of each method along with perspectives in the future development of these screening techniques and screened hit compounds.

RESUMO

Excessive liver lipid deposition is a vital risk factor for the development of many diseases. Here, we fed Sprague-Dawley rats with a control or α-lipoic acid-supplemented diet (0.2%) for 5 weeks to elucidate the effects of α-lipoic acid on preventive ability, hepatic lipid metabolism-related gene expression, and the involved regulatory mechanisms. In the current study, α-lipoic acid supplementation lowered plasma triglyceride level and hepatic triglyceride content. Reduced hepatic lipid deposition was closely associated with inhibiting fatty acid-binding protein 1 and fatty acid synthase expression, as well as increasing phosphorylated hormone-sensitive lipase expression at the protein level in α-lipoic acid-exposed rats. Hepatic miRNA sequencing revealed increased expression of miR-3548 targeting the 3'untranslated region of Fasn mRNA, and the direct regulatory link between miRNA-3548 and FASN was verified by dual-luciferase reporter assay. Taken together, α-lipoic acid lowered hepatic lipid accumulation, which involved changes in miRNA-mediated lipogenic genes.

RESUMO

The mixing process is one of the key operation units for solid preparation of traditional Chinese medicine. The physical properties such as particle size, density and viscosity of the mixture are key factors that need to be controlled, which will directly affect the performance of the preparation molding process and product quality. Subsequent dripping process performance and appearance qua-lity of dripping pills will be affected by dynamic viscosity of materials in the mixing process. Based on this, with mixing process of compound Danshen dripping pills as the object, a feedforward control method for the dripping pill mixing process was established based on the concept of quality by design(QbD). Firstly, critical quality attribute(CQA)-dynamic viscosity, critical material attributes(CMAs)-the moisture content of compound Danshen extract, average molecular weight of polyethylene glycol 6000 and critical process parameter(CPP)-mixing temperature were identified through the analysis of properties for multiple batches of the raw materials and excipients as well as technological mechanism. Then the Box-Behnken experimental design was used to establish the regression model among CMA, CPP and CMA(R■=0.972 0, RMSE =16.24) to obtain the design space. Finally, through the verification of three batches within the design space, the mixing process temperature was adjusted according to the properties of the raw materials and exci-pients to achieve accurate control of the dynamic viscosity attribute. The relative deviation between the actual dynamic viscosity value and the target value was less than 3.0 %. The feedforward control of the mixing process of compound Danshen dripping pills was rea-lized in this study, which can contribute to improving quality consistency of the mixing process intermediates, simultaneously provide a reference for the research on the process quality control of other Chinese medicine dripping pills.

RESUMO

Numerous studies have demonstrated that dozens of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mutagenic, genotoxic and strongly carcinogenic. PAHs are found to be widely present in foods contaminated through multiple paths. Due to their lipophilic nature, these compounds easily accumulate in edible oils and fatty foods where they can range from no detection to over 2000µg/kg. Compared to precursor PAHs, researchers have seldom studied the presence of PAH derivatives, especially in food matrices. This chapter includes the physical and chemical characteristics of PAHs and their types, occurrence, sample pretreatment and instrumental determination methods, and their formation, change and control in edible oils and fatty foods. The occurrence and formation of PAH derivatives in foods are much less investigated compared to those of their precursor PAHs. Although the removal of matrix effects and accuracy remain difficult for current rapid determination methods, a prospective research direction of PAH analysis for large-scale screening is in demand. To date, physical absorption, chemical oxidation and biodegradation have been widely used in PAH removal techniques. Specific types of bacteria, fungi, and algae have also been used to degrade PAHs into harmless compounds. However, most of them can only degrade a range of LPAHs, such as naphthalene, anthracene and phenanthrene. Their ability to degrade HPAHs requires further study. Moreover, it is still a great challenge to maintain food nutrition and flavor during the PAH removal process using these methods.

RESUMO

China healthcare industry has gradually developed the consumer-centric integrated service model. To satisfy consumers' increasing demands on pluralistic, personalized and transparent healthcare services, pharmaceutical manufacturing enterprises must provide high-quality, precise and flexible medicines. This can be achieved by accelerating implementation of intelligent manufacturing, which is the core competitiveness of pharmaceutical manufacturing enterprises. According to the authors' intelligent manufacturing projects in a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) factory, study and industrial practice on intelligent manufacturing were presented in this paper. First, the quality digitalization-based intelligent manufacturing methodology of TCM was proposed in this paper. The methodology mainly included three digitalized technologies in process and quality design, manufacturing process control and product batch evaluation. Next, the architectural design of intelligent manufacturing systems in one TCM factory was introduced, and the functional modules and data transmission relationships covering seedling, cultivation, herbal slices, preparation, storage and quality management systems were described. Finally, these technologies were fully used, and an integrated quality digitalization system was successfully established in the production workshop of a TCM product Compound Danshen Dripping Pills. The actual operation and application of process analyzers, supervisory control and data acquisition(SCADA), manufacturing execution system(MES), data analysis system, and enterprise resource planning system(ERP) were introduced. This paper provides reference for technical path planning and systematic architecture of TCM intelligent manufacturing.

RESUMO

Basilepta melanopus is a serious insect pest of tea plantations in southern China. This tea pest poses a great threat to the tea industry in China. No effective and environmentally friendly methods have been established to control this pest at present. Olfactory genes play key roles in insect behaviour, and can potentially be used as targets for developing environmentally-friendly approaches for pest control. In this study, we produced a transcriptome derived from dissected antennae from B. melanopus using high-throughput sequencing. We identified gene families that are potentially involved in odorant reception and detection, including unigenes encoding 63 odorant receptors (ORs), 16 gustatory receptors (GRs), 18 ionotropic receptors (IRs), four sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs), 46 odorant binding proteins (OBPs), and 19 chemosensory proteins (CSPs). Analyses of tissue expression profiles revealed that all 63 OR transcripts, 14 antennal IRs, one SNMP and six OBPs were predominately expressed in antennae. Real-time quantitative PCR assays were also adapted to examine sex-biased expression of selected antenna-predominant genes. Our results provide valuable information for further functional studies of olfactory genes in B. melanopus and potential novel targets for developing new pest control measures.

RESUMO

Multifunctional nanodrugs with the integration of precise diagnostic and effective therapeutic functions have shown great promise in improving the efficacy of cancer therapy. We report herein a simple and effective approach to directly assemble an anticancer drug (curcumin), a photodynamic agent (Ce6) and tumor environment-sensitive molecules into cross-linked polyphosphazene and coat on superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoclusters to form discrete nanoparticles (termed as FHCPCe NPs). FHCPCe NPs have high physiological stability and good biocompatibility, and can enhance accumulation in tumor tissue via the enhanced permeability and retention effect. Meanwhile, the FHCPCe NPs exhibit an effective performance of dual-modality magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to the Fe3O4 cores and fluorescence imaging (FL) in the xenografted HeLa tumor because of the fluorescence of Ce6. Importantly, under the conditions of supernormal glutathione levels and acidic microenvironment in tumor tissue, curcumin and Ce6 can be effectively released by the degradation of FHCPCe NPs. Therefore, excellent anti-tumor effects both in vitro and in vivo have been achieved by synergistic chemotherapy/photodynamic therapy (CT/PDT) using multifunctional NPs. Our study highlights the promise of developing multifunctional nanomaterials for accurate multimodal imaging-guided highly sensitive therapy of cancer.

RESUMO

Sorafenib is a kinase inhibitor approved for the treatment of primary kidney cancer, advanced primary liver cancer, and radioactive iodine resistant advanced thyroid carcinoma. However, sorafenib usually causes serious side effects, which limit its antitumor effect. Nanoparticle based drug delivery systems have been widely used to enhance the therapeutic effects and reduce the side effects of this drug by the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Herein, to improve the therapeutic effect of sorafenib, we developed poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PEG-PLGA) based nanoparticles by a dialysis method for sorafenib encapsulation. After intravenous injection of the sorafenib loaded nanoparticles (NPsorafenib), the tumor growth of mice bearing B16-F10, MC38 and LLC tumor was significantly inhibited. Meanwhile, the dose of sorafenib was reduced to one ninth and the side effects on the hematopoietic system and immune system were abrogated. More importantly, the tumor growth inhibition effect of NPsorafenib was dramatically reduced in B16-F10 bearing Rag1-/- mice which are adaptive immune cell defective, indicating that the antitumor effects of NPsorafenib are dependent on the adaptive immune cells. These results emphasize the indispensable role of the adaptive immune system in nano-drug mediated antitumor effects and the adaptive immune system should be considered as an important factor for clinical applications.

RESUMO

RuPx nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in uniform N,P-codoped hollow carbon nanospheres (RuPx @NPC) have been synthesized through a facile route in which aniline-pyrrole copolymer nanospheres are used to disperse Ru ions followed by a gas phosphorization process. The as-prepared RuPx @NPC exhibits a uniform core-shell hollow nanospherical structure with RuPx NPs as the core and N,P-codoped carbon (NPC) as the shell. This strategy integrates many advantages of hollow nanostructures, which provide a conductive substrate and the doping of a nonmetal element. At high temperatures, the obtained thin NPC shell can not only protect the highly active phase of RuPx NPs from aggregation and corrosion in the electrolyte but also allows variation in the electronic structures to improve the charge-transfer rate greatly by N,P codoping. The optimized RuPx @NPC sample at 900 °C exhibits a Pt-like performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and long-term durability in acidic, alkaline, and neutral solutions. The reaction requires a small overpotential of only 51, 74, and 110 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 m H2 SO4 , 1.0 m KOH, and 1.0 m phosphate-buffered saline, respectively. This work provides a new way to design unique phosphide-doped carbon heterostructures through an inorganic-organic hybrid method as excellent electrocatalysts for HER.
