RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of near-infrared (NIR) light therapy on depression-induced intestinal dysfunction in rats and explore the possible mechanism. METHODS: Thirty-two male SD rats were randomly divided into control group, model group, low-dose NIR light group and high-dose NIR light group. All the rats except for those in the control group were subjected to chronic restrained stress (CRS) for 4 weeks, and NIR light therapy of the head was administered in the two NIR light groups. The depression- like behaviors, intestinal functions, fecal water content and number of fecal pellets of the rats were evaluated. HE staining was used for detecting histopathological changes in the hippocampus and colon, and hippocampal expressions of BDNF, Nrf2 and PGC-1α were detected with Western blotting. RESULTS: The rats in the CRS model group showed significantly increased immobility time and visceral sensitivity in the behavioral tests, decreased fecal pellets and fecal water content, and lowered expressions of BDNF, Nrf2, and PGC-1α in the hippocampus (P<0.05). Histopathological examination of the CRS rats revealed loosely arranged hippocampal pyramidal cells, obvious neuronal damages, and obvious inflammatory cell infiltration in the colon with irregularly arranged mucosal glands and a high pathological score. High-dose NIR light therapy significantly lowered the immobility time and visceral sensitivity, increased the number of fecal pellets and fecal water content (P<0.05), and enhanced hippocampal expressions of BDNF, Nrf2, and PGC-1α (P<0.05) of the depressive rats. The rats receiving high-dose NIR light therapy also exhibited close arrangement of the hippocampal pyramidal cells with significantly reduced neuronal damage and colonic inflammatory cell infiltration, neatly arranged mucosal glands, and lowered pathological score. CONCLUSION: NIR light therapy can significantly improve depression-like behavior and intestinal function in rats possibly by ameliorating oxidative stress via the PGC-1α/Nrf2 signaling pathway and increasing BDNF level in the hippocampus.

RESUMO

Objective: Compare and analyze the results of the domestic Lanyi AH600 glycated hemoglobin analyzer and other different detection systems to understand the comparability of the detection results of different detectors, and establish the best cut point of Lanyi AH600 determination of haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in the diagnosis of diabetes. Methods: Multi center cohort study was adopted. The clinical laboratory departments of 18 medical institutions independently collected test samples from their respective hospitals from March to April 2022, and independently completed comparative analysis of the evaluated instrument (Lanyi AH600) and the reference instrument HbA1c. The reference instruments include four different brands of glycosylated hemoglobin meters, including Arkray, Bio-Rad, DOSOH, and Huizhong. Scatter plot was used to calculate the correlation between the results of different detection systems, and the regression equation was calculated. The consistency analysis between the results of different detection systems was evaluated by Bland Altman method. Consistency judgment principles: (1) When the 95% limits of agreement (95% LoA) of the measurement difference was within 0.4% HbA1c and the measurement score was≥80 points, the comparison consistency was good; (2) When the measurement difference of 95% LoA exceeded 0.4% HbA1c, and the measurement score was≥80 points, the comparison consistency was relatively good; (3) The measurement score was less than 80 points, the comparison consistency was poor. The difference between the results of different detection systems was tested by paired sample T test or Wilcoxon paired sign rank sum test; The best cut-off point of diabetes was analyzed by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Results: The correlation coefficient R2 of results between Lanyi AH600 and the reference instrument in 16 hospitals is≥0.99; The Bland Altman consistency analysis showed that the difference of 95% LoA in Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital in Jiangsu Province (reference instrument: Arkray HA8180) was -0.486%-0.325%, and the measurement score was 94.6 points (473/500); The difference of 95% LoA in the Tibetan Traditional Medical Hospital of TAR (reference instrument: Bio-Rad Variant II) was -0.727%-0.612%, and the measurement score was 89.8 points; The difference of 95% LoA in the People's Hospital of Chongqing Liang Jiang New Area (reference instrument: Huizhong MQ-2000PT) was -0.231%-0.461%, and the measurement score was 96.6 points; The difference of 95% LoA in the Taihe Hospital of traditional Chinese Medicine in Anhui Province (reference instrument: Huizhong MQ-2000PT) was -0.469%-0.479%, and the measurement score was 91.9 points. The other 14 hospitals, Lanyi AH600, were compared with 4 reference instrument brands, the difference of 95% LoA was less than 0.4% HbA1c, and the scores were all greater than 95 points. The results of paired sample T test or Wilcoxon paired sign rank sum test showed that there was no statistically significant difference between Lanyi AH600 and the reference instrument Arkray HA8180 (Z=1.665,P=0.096), with no statistical difference. The mean difference between the measured values of the two instruments was 0.004%. The comparison data of Lanyi AH600 and the reference instrument of all other institutions had significant differences (all P<0.001), however, it was necessary to consider whether it was within the clinical acceptable range in combination with the results of the Bland-Altman consistency analysis. The ROC curve of HbA1c detected by Lanyi AH600 in 985 patients with diabetes and 3 423 patients with non-diabetes was analyzed, the area under curve (AUC) was 0.877, the standard error was 0.007, and the 95% confidence interval 95%CI was (0.864, 0.891), which was statistically significant (P<0.001). The maximum value of Youden index was 0.634, and the corresponding HbA1c cut point was 6.235%. The sensitivity and specificity of diabetes diagnosis were 76.2% and 87.2%, respectively. Conclusion: Among the hospitals and instruments currently included in this study, among these four hospitals included Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital in Jiangsu Province (reference instrument: Arkray HA8180), Tibetan Traditional Medical Hospital of TAR (reference instrument: Bio-Rad Variant Ⅱ), the People's Hospital of Chongqing Liang Jiang New Area (reference instrument: Huizhong MQ-2000PT), and the Taihe Hospital of traditional Chinese Medicine in Anhui Province (reference instrument: Huizhong MQ-2000PT), the comparison between Lanyi AH600 and the reference instruments showed relatively good consistency, while the other 14 hospitals involved four different brands of reference instruments: Arkray, Bio-Rad, DOSOH, and Huizhong, Lanyi AH600 had good consistency with its comparison. The best cut point of the domestic Lanyi AH600 for detecting HbA1c in the diagnosis of diabetes is 6.235%.

RESUMO

The passion fruit peel (PFP) is the by-product of juice processing and is rich in phenolic compounds and dietary fibers. As the high ADF content in PFP (34.20%), we proceeded to treat PFP with cellulase. The ADF decreased to 16.70% after enzymatic processing, and we supposed that enzymolytic passion fruit peel (EPF) should have a greater growth performance than PFP to broilers. Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary PFP or EPF supplementation on growth performance, serum biochemical indices, meat quality, and cecal short-chain fatty acids, microbiota, and metabolites in broilers. In Exp. 1, 180 1-day-old Sanhuang broilers (male, 36.17 ± 2.47 g) were randomly allocated into 3 treatments, with 6 replicates in each treatment. The 3 experimental diets included 1 basal diet (control) and 2 PFP-added diets supplemented with 1 and 2% PFP, respectively. The trial lasted for 42 d. In Exp. 2, 144 Sanhuang broilers (male, 112-day-old, 1.62 ± 0.21 kg) were randomly allocated to 3 treatments. Each treatment was distributed among 6 pens, and each pen contained 8 broilers. The 3 treatment diets included: a control diet, a positive control diet supplementing 75 mg/kg chlortetracycline, and the experimental diet supplementing 3% EPF. The trial lasted for 56 d. Results showed that dietary 1 and 2% PFP addition did not affect growth performance in Exp. 1, and the 3% EPF supplementation had a negative effect on ADFI (P < 0.05) in Exp. 2. A decreased serum triglyceride (P < 0.05) in broilers was observed in Exp. 1. Broilers fed EPF had a higher glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (P < 0.05), and lower levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) (P < 0.05) and glucose (P < 0.05) in Exp. 2. We also found that broilers from PFP or EPF-treated treatments had an increased butyrate content and higher microbial diversity in the cecum. The effects of antioxidation, anti-inflammatory function, and elevated SCFAs were confirmed after the microbe and untargeted metabolomic analysis. Dietary EPF supplementation significantly increased the SCFA-generating bacteria, anti-inflammatory-related bacteria, the antioxidant-related and anti-inflammatory-related metabolites. Moreover, dietary 3% EPF addition positively affects the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids, which strongly correlate with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In conclusion, the proper addition level did not affect the growth performance, and the PFP and EPF could improve the antioxidation state, anti-inflammatory activity, and intestinal functions of Sanhuang broilers to some extent.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect and underlying mechanisms of Chinese medicine Yanghe decoction on pain relief in a rat model of bone metastasis of breast cancer induced by michigan cancer foundation-7 (MCF-7). METHODS: Bone pain was induced in the tibia of rats injected with MCF-7 cells. The Chinese herbal remedy was used to decoct Yanghe decoction for the treatment of bone pain rats. The behavior study was carried out to evaluate the paw mechanical withdraw threshold and thermal withdraw latency. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, Western blotting, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunohistochemical (IHC) staining were performed for analysis. RESULTS: Yanghe decoction could improve the defensive behavior similar to the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) inhibitor. In morphology study, Yanghe decoction could attenuate the cellular growth as well as inflammatory infiltration in the metastasis group. Furthermore, Yanghe decoction downregulated the TRPA1 expression on the dorsal root ganglion from the metastatic rats at both transcriptional and protein level. Yanghe decoction alleviated the inflammation in metastatic tissues by hematoxylin-eosin and IHC analysis, and Yanghe decoction also reduced the inflammatory cytokines production in the serum including tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6, interleukin-1 beta by ELISA. As the cytochromec oxidase subunit II/prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is required for cancer development, Yanghe decoction reduced the expression of PGE2 in the tissue and serum. CONCLUSION: Taken together, Yanghe decoction protected the rats from breast cancer bone metastasis through TRPA1 signaling mediated neuropathic pain and additional immune modulation in tumor microenvironment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have evaluated the effects of probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic supplementation on blood glucose profiles among diabetic patients. However, the results were inconsistent. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: A systematic searching from PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Central was conducted to identify high-quality clinical trials investigating the effect of probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic supplementation on blood glucose profiles [including fasting blood glucose (FBG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)] up to December 2020. Subgroup analyses by types or durations of probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic supplementation were conducted to investigate the different effects among different populations. RESULTS: A total of 39 trials with 3517 participants were included in the final analyses. Among patients with type II diabetes (T2DM), the summarized standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidential intervals (95% CIs) of FBG, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR were -0.30 (95% CI: -0.65 to 0.05), -0.59 (95% CI: -0.88 to -0.30), and -0.68 (95% CI: -1.13 to -0.23), respectively. Among patients with gestational diabetes (GDM), the summary SMDs of FBG, HbA1c and HOMA-IR were -0.67 (95% CI: -1.23 to -0.11), -0.24 (95% CI: -0.57 to 0.08), and -1.06 (95% CI: -1.72 to -0.40), respectively. Similar improvements in blood glucose profiles were also found among persons with prediabetes or gestational woman with normal glucose, but not among patients with type I diabetes. Subgroup analyses showed similar results of probiotic supplementation for patients with T2DM and probiotic/synbiotic supplementation for patients with GDM. CONCLUSION: Probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic supplementation might improve the blood glucose profiles among patients with T2DM/GDM, persons with prediabetes, or gestational woman with normal glucose. Trials with more sophisticated design are needed to validate the results in the future. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42020161975.

RESUMO

"Hai Shang Xin De Shen Fang" is an ancient medical book written in Chinese by Li Youzhuo, a famous doctor in the Post Li Dynasty in Vietnam. The book was deeply influenced by "Feng Shi Jin Nang Mi Lu", a representative book of the Warming School (Wen Bu) written by Feng Zhaozhang in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. By comparing and examining the two books, it was found that forty-five out of the sixty-six prescriptions in "Hai Shang Xin De Shen Fang" came from or were simply copied from "Feng Shi Jin Nang Mi Lu", or were extracted from the medical cases from "Feng Shi Jin Nang Mi Lu", or were changed the name but kept the ingredients the same. The other twenty-one prescriptions followed the examples of "Feng Shi Jin Nang Mi Lu" and presented new prescriptions. It can be seen that "Hai Shang Xin De Shen Fang" reflects the extension spread, and development of the academic thinking of the Warming School (Wen Bu) in the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Vietnam and demonstrated the Chinese cultural origin of Vietnamese traditional medicine.

RESUMO

Objective: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to study the effect of aging on the neuroimaging characteristics of cerebral cortex in the process of speech perception. Method: Thirty-four adults with normal hearing were recruited from March 2021 to June 2021, including 17 in the young group, with 6 males, 11 females, age (32.1±5.0) years, age range 20-39 years. and 17 in the elderly group, with 6 males, 11 females, age (63.2±2.8) years, age range 60-70 years. The test material was the sentence table of the Mandarin Hearing Test in Noise (MHINT). The task state block experiment design was adopted, and the temporal lobe, Broca's area, Wernicke's area, motor cortex were used as regions of interest. Objective brain imaging technology (fNIRS) combined with subjective psychophysical testing method was used to analyze the activation area and degree of cerebral cortex related to auditory speech perception in the elderly and young people under different listening conditions (quiet, signal-to-noise ratio of 10 dB, 5 dB, 0 dB, -5 dB). SPSS 23 software was used for statistical analysis. Result: The activation area and degree of activation in the elderly group were lower than those in the young group under each task condition; The number of activation channels in the young group were significantly more than those in the old group, and the number of activation channels in the left hemisphere were more than those in the right hemisphere, but there was no difference in the number of activation channels. There were more channels affected by age in the left hemisphere than in the right hemisphere. The activation degree of the young group when the signal-to-noise ratio was 0 dB was significantly higher than that of other signal-to-noise ratio conditions (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the old group under the five conditions (P>0.05). The speech recognition score of the young group was higher than that of the old group under all conditions. When the quiet and signal-to-noise ratio was 10 dB, the correct score of the two groups was equal or close to 100%. With the gradual decrease of signal-to-noise ratio, there was a significant difference between the two groups when the signal-to-noise ratio was 5 dB. The speech recognition accuracy of the young group decreased significantly when the signal-to-noise ratio was 0 dB, while that of the old group decreased significantly when the signal-to-noise ratio was 5 dB. Conclusions: With the increase of age, the speech perception in noisy environment and the activity of cerebral cortex gradually deteriorate, and the speech dominance hemisphere (left hemisphere) will be significantly affected by aging. The overall activation area and activation degree of the elderly under different speech tasks are lower than those of the young.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to see how different initial treatment regimens affected the long-term prognosis of patients with extranodal marginal zone mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma confining to the ocular adnexal (OAML) . Methods: Between April 2008 and April 2019, 109 patients with initial mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue confining to ocular adnexal were evaluated and followed-up, and the prognosis of various initial treatment regimens were examined. Results: A total of 36 patients underwent complete surgical resection of the lesions, and 73 patients had residual lesions after surgery, of which 37 patients chose watchful waiting, and 36 patients chose treatment. The treatment regimen included local radiotherapy and systemic treatment (chemotherapy, immunochemotherapy, the combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, etc.) , and no serious toxic and side effects were observed in patients receiving systemic treatment. The median follow-up time was 61 (10-142) months. The 5-year and 10-year progression-free survival (PFS) of monocular involvement patients were 78.2% and 76.0% . The 5-year and 10-year PFS rates of patients with binocular involvement were 64.4% and 23.5%. There was significant diference in PFS between patients with monocular and binocular involvement (P=0.010) . Patients who received additional treatment had higher PFS than those patients in the watchful waiting group (P=0.046) . The 5-year PFS was 71.4% and 90.1% among patients in the watchful waiting group and those who received additional treatment, whereas the 10-year PFS was 63.5% and 75.1% , respectively. Patients with OAML were still a risk of disease progression after 5 years. Conclusions: Patients with binocular involvement OAML at the start of the disease had a poor prognosis, but treatment could reduce the risk of recurrence/progression. Systemic therapy is one of the first-line treatment options for patients with OAML, who require long-term monitoring.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Drilling and drainage is the main treatment for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). However, anesthesia methods also have an important effect on patients' postoperative outcomes. The clinical effect of drainage of cSDH under local anesthesia with sedation (LAS) and general anesthesia (GA) was systematically evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for studies that compare LAS and GA for cSDH. The following treatment outcomes were compared between LAS and GA: total duration of surgery, postoperative complications, mortality, recurrence rate, and hospital length of stay (LOS). RESULTS: Four papers (n = 391, LAS: 196, GA: 195) met the inclusion criteria. Although there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in mortality (OR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.06-3.84, p = 0.48; p = 0.2, I2 = 39%), recurrence rate (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.33-2.04, p = 0.66; p = 0.69, I2 = 0%), LOS (ratio of means: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.71-1.05, p = 0.14; p = 0.02, I2 = 75%). The total duration of surgery (MD: -26.71 min, 95% CI: -37.29 to -16.13, p < 0.00001; p = 0.65, I2 = 0%) was significantly shorter and the number of postoperative complications was significantly lower in the LAS group compared with the GA group (OR: 0.25, 95% CI: 0.13-0.50, p < 0.0001; p= 0.62, I2 = 0%). CONCLUSIONS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the existing literature showed that LAS reduces the total duration of surgery and postoperative complications compared to GA. No significant difference in mortality, recurrence rate, and LOS was observed between the two groups.

RESUMO

Acanthopanax senticosus (AS) is a well-known, highly effective traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Polysaccharides extracted from AS (ASPS) have multiple pharmacologic and biological activities with potential use as additives in broiler chicken feed. This trial evaluated the effects of dietary ASPS on growth performance, immune function, antioxidation, and ileal microbial populations in broiler chickens. A total of 240 1-day-old Arbor Acres male broiler chicks were randomly divided into 4 groups, with 10 replicates of 6 chicks and fed a corn- and soybean-based diet supplemented with 0, 1, 2, or 4 g/kg ASPS. Compared with the control group, supplementation with 1 g/kg ASPS increased ADG and ADFI in the finisher and overall periods and decreased the feed conversion ratio in the finisher period (both P < 0.05). Serum IgA and IgM were significantly increased by supplementation with 1 and 2 g/kg of ASPS (P < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were increased and malondialdehyde concentration was decreased in birds fed ASPS-supplemented diets compared with those in the control group (P < 0.05). Polysaccharides extracted from AS supplementation increased Lactobacillus and decreased Escherichia coli and Salmonella counts in the ileal contents compared with the control diet (both P < 0.05). The results show that dietary ASPS improved growth performance, immune status, and antioxidant capacity and stimulated the growth of beneficial gut bacteria in broiler chickens. In conclusion, ASPS was effective as a natural additive in broiler chicken feed; 1 g/kg can be considered as the optimum dosage.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: As a very common risk of adverse outcomes of the ischemic stroke patients, sarcopenia is associated with infectious complications and higher mortality. The goal of this retrospective study is to explore the predictive value of serum Cr/CysC ratio in acute ischemic stroke patients receiving nutritional intervention. METHODS: We reviewed adult patients with AIS from December 2019 to February 2020. Patients with acute kidney injury were excluded and all patients received nutritional intervention during a 3-month follow-up period. We collected baseline data at admission including creatinine and cystatin C. The primary poor outcome was major disability (modified Rankin Scale score ≥ 4) at 3 months after AIS. RESULTS: A total of 217 patients with AIS were identified for this study. Serum Cr/CysC ratio was significantly correlated with NIHSS at discharge, 1-month modified Rankin Scale score, and 3-month modified Rankin Scale score. During 3 months, 34 (15.70%) patients had a poor outcome after AIS and 11 (5.10%) patients died within 30 days. In multivariable logistic regression analyses, serum Cr/CysC ratio at admission was independently associated with 3-month poor outcomes (OR: 0.953, 95% CI: 0.921-0.986, p = .006) and 30-day mortality (OR: 0.953, 95% CI: 0.921-0.986, p = .006). CONCLUSION: As a blood biochemical indexes reflecting the muscle mass and aiding in risk stratification, Cr/CysC ratio at admission could be used as a predictor of 30-day mortality and long-term poor prognosis in AIS patients.

RESUMO

Objective: To observe the influence of different treatment intervals of pulsed dye laser (PDL) in treating hypertrophic scar after burn, and to explore the optimal treatment interval. Methods: From May 2018 to March 2019, 20 burn patients who met the inclusion criteria and were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Medical University were included in this prospective randomized controlled study. Patients were divided into 1 week group (4 patients, 2 males and 2 females, aged 27 (4, 67) years, 19 scars), 2 weeks group (5 patients, 2 males and 3 females, aged 9 (3, 55) years, 15 scars), 3 weeks group (5 patients, 4 males and 1 female, aged 26 (19, 45) years, 15 scars), and 4 weeks group (6 patients, 4 males and 2 females, aged 31 (14, 48) years, 13 scars), according to the random number table, and treated with PDL with the treatment intervals of 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks, respectively, with total treatment cycle of 3 months. Before the first treatment and three months after the first treatment, the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) was conducted and the decreased value of VSS score was calculated; the laser Doppler blood flow meter was used to measure scar blood perfusion and the proportion of change in blood perfusion volume was calculated. Data were statistically analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test, Wilcoxon rank sum test, Wilcoxon symbolic rank sum test, Bonferroni correction, and Fisher's exact probability test. Results: The VSS scores of patients in 1 week group, 2 weeks group, 3 weeks group, and 4 weeks group in three months after the first treatment were significantly lower than those before the first treatment (Z=-3.74, -3.47, -2.69, -3.25, P<0.01). There were no statistically significant differences in the decreased values of VSS scores in three months after the first treatment among the patients in 4 groups (H=2.35, P>0.05). Three months after the first treatment, the blood perfusion volumes of patients in 2 weeks group and 3 weeks group were significantly lower than those before the first treatment (Z=-2.95, -2.50, P<0.05 or P<0.01). The proportions of changes in blood perfusion volume of patients in 1 week group, 2 weeks group, 3 weeks group, and 4 weeks group were respectively -0.02 (-1.05, 0.69), -0.29 (-0.75, 0.18), -0.11 (-0.55, 0.23), 0.05 (-0.61, 0.75). There were statistically significant differences among the 4 groups (H=9.39, P<0.05). The proportions of changes in blood perfusion volume of patients in 2 weeks group was statistically higher than that of 1 week group (Z=2.76, P<0.01). Conclusions: PDL treatment can reduce the VSS score and blood perfusion volume of scar. One treatment every two weeks or three weeks improve the scar blood perfusion volume more significantly, and can be recommended as the appropriate treatment interval of PDL for hypertrophic scar after burn.

RESUMO

AIMS: We aimed to purify an antimicrobial protein from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FS6 culture supernatant, verify its antimicrobial activity against Fusarium solani and evaluate its biocontrol potential for ginseng root rot. METHODS AND RESULTS: The antimicrobial protein was purified from FS6 culture supernatant using ammonium sulphate precipitation, anion exchange and gel chromatography. Based on mass spectrometry results, the purified protein was identified as an antimicrobial protein of the LCI family and was designated APC2 . The APC2 recombinant protein expressed in Escherichia coli (BL21) significantly inhibited F. solani and decreased the infection and spread of F. solani in ginseng root. An overexpressing APC2 strain FS6-APC2 was constructed and shown to have enhanced antimicrobial activity compared to the wild-type strain FS6. CONCLUSIONS: The APC2 protein shows strong antimicrobial activity against F. solani, reduces the incidence and severity of ginseng root rot caused by F. solani and exhibits a great biocontrol potential. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study reports the inhibitory activity of APC2 protein (LCI family) against F. solani and its protective efficacy on ginseng root rot. These findings provide a scientific basis for future research on the biocontrol mechanism, as well as the development and application of FS6.

RESUMO

Mineral nutrition plays a critical role in growth and bone mineralization in meat ducks as well as reproductive performance in duck layers and duck breeders. In addition to improving production performance parameters, minerals are also essential to support several enzymatic systems to enhancing antioxidant ability and immune function. This review explores the biological function and metabolism of minerals in the body, as well as mineral feeding strategy of various species of ducks. Topics range from mineral requirement to the physiological role of macroelements such as calcium and phosphorus and microelements such as zinc and selenium, etc. As with the improvement of genetic evolution and upgrade of rearing system in duck production, mineral requirements and electrolyte balance are urgent to be re-evaluated using sensitive biomarkers for the modern duck breed characterized by the rapid growth rate and inadequate bone development and mineralization. For duck breeders, mineral nutrition is not only required for maximal egg production performance but also for maintaining normal embryonic development and offspring's performance. Therefore, the proper amounts of bioavailable minerals need to be supplemented to maintain the mineral nutritional state of duck species during all phases of life. In addition, more positive effects of high doses microelements supplementations have been revealed for modern meat ducks subjected to various stresses in commercial production. The nutritional factors of mineral sources, supplemental enzymes, and antinutritional factors from unconventional ingredients should be emphasized to improve the effectiveness of mineral nutrition in duck feed formulation. Organic mineral sources and phytase enzymes have been adopted to reduce the antagonistic action between mineral and antinutritional factors. Therefore, special and accurate database of mineral requirements should be established for special genotypes of ducks under different rearing conditions, including rearing factors, environmental stresses and diets supplemented with organic sources, phytase and VD3.

RESUMO

Liquor distiller's grains with solubles (LDGS) is high in yield and rich in crude fiber and crude protein, which suggests that LDGS might be developed and used as unconventional feedstuff for ducks. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sources and levels of LDGS on growth performance, carcass characteristics, serum parameters, and intestinal morphology of Cherry Valley ducks from 15 to 42 D of age. A total of 3,300 15-day-old male ducks were randomly assigned into a 1 plus 2 × 5 factorial design including 2 different sources of LDGS (unfermented LDGS [ULDGS] and fermented LDGS [FLDGS]) at 5 levels (4, 8, 12, 16, and 20%) for 4 wk. Each treatment group included 6 pens with 50 ducks per pen. Levels of dietary LDGS and the interaction between sources and levels of LDGS had no effect on final body weight, average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain, or feed-to-gain ratio (F:G) of ducks from day 15 to 42 (P > 0.05). Compared with dietary ULDGS, dietary FLDGS increased final body weight (P < 0.05) and ADFI (P < 0.05) and decreased the F:G (P = 0.03). The levels of LDGS and interaction effect between levels and sources of LDGS had no effect on carcass characteristics (P > 0.05). Regardless of the inclusion level, ducks fed with diets containing FLDGS had a higher percentage of thigh muscle (P < 0.01) than birds fed with diets containing ULDGS. Sources of dietary LDGS, levels of dietary LDGS, and their interaction had no effect on serum biochemistry parameters (P > 0.05) and intestinal morphology, including villus height, crypt depth, and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio (P > 0.05). In conclusion, the inclusion of LDGS in the diet at levels up to 20% had no negative effect on the growth performance, carcass characteristics, serum parameters, and intestinal morphology of ducks. Compared with ULDGS, FLDGS increased final body weight, ADFI, and thigh muscle yield and decreased the F:G of ducks. Therefore, LDGS, especially with fermentation, could be developed as an unconventional feedstuff resource for ducks from 15 to 42 D of age.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Increasing antibiotic resistance has motivated interest in non-antibiotic prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI). OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review of the current state of evidence of acupuncture for uncomplicated rUTI in women. SEARCH STRATEGY: Nine databases (PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL, AMED, CBM, CNKI, CQVIP, Wanfang) were searched from inception to February 2019. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of acupuncture and related therapies for prophylaxis or treatment of uncomplicated rUTI in women were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Risk of bias was assessed, and the quality and strength of evidence evaluated using the GRADE framework. Results were reported as risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes or mean differences (MD) for continuous outcomes, with 95% confidence intervals (CI). MAIN RESULTS: Five RCTs involving 341 participants were included. Methodological quality of studies and strength of the evidence were low to moderate. The chance of achieving a composite cure with acupuncture therapies was greater than that with antibiotics (three studies, 170 participants, RR 1.92, 95% CI 1.31-2.81, I2  = 38%). The risk of UTI recurrence was lower with acupuncture than with no treatment (two studies, 135 participants, RR 0.39, 95% CI 0.26-0.58, I2  = 0%) and sham acupuncture (one study, 53 participants, RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.22-0.92). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture appeared to be beneficial for treatment and prophylaxis of rUTIs, noting the limitations of the current evidence. Given the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance, there is a need for high-quality RCTs of non-pharmacological interventions such as acupuncture. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: This review found that acupuncture may improve treatment and prevent recurrence of urinary tract infection in women.

RESUMO

Lobster-eye optics is a promising option to establish an all-sky monitor in the X-ray spectrum. With the development of micromachining technology, the performance of lobster-eye optics is gradually improving and has become more practical. In this paper, from an optical design point of view, the mathematical models of the square-channel lobster-eye lens and the meridional lobster-eye lens have been established based on prism analysis, and the focusing property differences of the two lenses are analyzed. There are several key conclusions: the square-channel lobster lens has no paraxial ideal focal point; the meridional lobster eye lens has better energy concentration for focusing and a weaker capacity for energy collection than the square-channel lobster eye lens in the high-energy X-ray spectrum; and the stray light arms of the square lobster-eye lens appear earlier than those of the meridional lobster-eye lens when the photon energy decreases. These conclusions can help improve the design of a lobster-eye lens for space detection and exploration.

RESUMO

Objective: To observe the effect of liquid paraffin as adjuvant therapy in treating residual wounds of patients with severe burns. Methods: From January 2016 to October 2017, 58 patients with residual wounds in the later stage of severe burns were admitted to Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. Those patients met the inclusion criteria of this study and were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. All the patients received wound disinfection, petrolatum gauze dressing change and silver ion-bearing antimicrobial dressing every other day to treat the residual wound until wound healing. From January to November 2016, 29 patients who were treated with iodophor and normal saline to clean and disinfect the wound before dressing change were enrolled in normal saline group, including 22 males and 7 females, aged (38±12) years. From December 2016 to October 2017, 29 patients who were treated with iodophor and liquid paraffin to clean and disinfect the wound before dressing change were enrolled in liquid paraffin group, including 20 males and 9 females, aged (37±12) years. The effective rate of treatment, infection control rate, and bacterial positive ratio of wound on post first treatment day (PFTD) 7, 14, and 21 and the complete wound healing time of patients were compared between the two groups. Data were statistically analyzed with independent sample t test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, chi-square test, and Pearson chi-square test, continuity correction chi-square test, and Fisher's exact probability test after Bonferroni correction. Results: (1) On PFTD 7, 14, and 21, the effective rates of wound treatment in patients of liquid paraffin group were 34% (10/29), 59%(17/29), and 79%(23/29), respectively, which were significantly higher than 10% (3/29), 24% (7/29), and 38% (11/29) of normal saline group (χ(2)=5.857, 7.108, 10.235, P<0.05 or P<0.01). (2) The wound infection control rates in patients of liquid paraffin group on PFTD 7 and 14 were 79% (23/29) and 90% (26/29), respectively, which were significantly higher than 31% (9/29) and 52% (15/29) of normal saline group (χ(2)=13.663, 8.321, P<0.01). The wound infection control rate in patients of liquid paraffin group on PFTD 21 was 100% (29/29), which was significantly higher than 69% (20/29) of normal saline group (P<0.01). (3) The bacterial positive ratios in the wounds of liquid paraffin group were similar to those of normal saline group on PFTD 7 and 14 (χ(2)=2.097, 2.583, P>0.05). On PFTD 21, the wound bacterial positive ratio of liquid paraffin group was 8% (3/39), which was significantly lower than 49% (17/35) of normal saline group (χ(2)=13.625, P<0.01). (4) The complete wound healing time of patients in liquid paraffin group was 15.0 (11.0, 20.0) d, which was significantly shorter than 22.0 (15.0, 27.5) d of normal saline group (Z=2.256, P<0.05). Conclusions: In the treatment of residual wounds of severe burn patients, liquid paraffin as adjuvant therapy can effectively improve the treatment effective rate and the infection control rate of wounds, decrease the bacterial positive ratio, and shorten the wound healing time.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the safety and feasibility of proximal partial gastrectomy with Cheng's Giraffe esophagogastric reconstruction for the treatment of early Siewert II adenocarcinoma of esophagogastric junction (AEG). Methods: Indication of Cheng's Giraffe esophagogastric reconstruction: (1) Siewert II AEG or Siewert III AEG with diameter < 4 cm; (2) preoperative staging as cT1-2N0M0. A descriptive case series study was carried out. Clinical data of 34 patients with Siewert II AEG undergoing proximal partial gastrectomy and Cheng's Giraffe esophagogastric reconstruction at Department of Abdominal Surgery of Zhejiang Cancer Hospital and Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from February to July 2018 were retrospectively collected and analyzed, including 14 cases in IA stage, 11 cases in IIA stage and 8 cases in IIB stage. Brief procedure of Cheng's Giraffe esophagogastric reconstruction was as follows: Firstly, 12 cm long tubular stomach was formed by longitudinal incision 4 cm away from the great curvature of the stomach. Secondly, the gastric fundus and His angle were formed. Finally, the distance from His angle to esophagal-tubular gastric anastomosis should be more than 5 cm. The reflux disease questionare (RDQ) scores, radionuclide gastric emptying scintigraphy, and 24-hour multichannel intraluminal (MII)-pH monitoring technology were used to evaluate postoperative gastric emptying and gastroesophageal reflux. Result: All 34 patients successfully completed proximal partial gastrectomy with Cheng's Giraffe esophagogastric reconstruction, including 13 cases by open surgery and 21 cases by laparoscopic surgery. The operation time was (144.6±39.8) minutes, the blood loss during operation was (35.4±17.2) ml. No laparoscopic case was converted to open surgery and no postoperative complication was observed. The postoperative hospital stay was (8.4±2.5) days. The postoperative RDQ score was 4.4±3.1 one month after operation, and 3.3±2.5 six months after operation. Gastric-half emptying time was (67.0±21.5) minutes, and the residual ratio was (52.2±7.7)% in 1 hour, (36.4±3.1)% in 2 hours and (28.8±3.6)% in 3 hours at postoperative 1-month. The 24-hour MII-pH monitoring at postoperative 2-month revealed the frequency of acid reflux was (12.6±7.9) times, frequency of non-acid reflux was (19.6±9.7) times, DeMeester score was 5.8±2.9. Conclusion: Cheng's Giraffe esophagogastric reconstruction is safe and feasible in the treatment of Siewert type II AEG, and has good dynamic and anti-reflux effects.
