Background: Nausea and vomiting are among the most common medical problems during pregnancy, affecting 80% of mothers. Objectives: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental study to determine the effect of acupressure applied by a wristband to the pericardium 6 (PC6) point on nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Methods: The study population consisted of 74 pregnant women between 6-14 weeks of gestation who were experiencing nausea and vomiting. The study data was collected with personal information from the Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis Scale (PUQE). Experimental and control groups were selected by a simple random method. The experimental group wore acupressure wristbands for one week, while the control group did not use any method to alleviate nausea and vomiting. One week later, the PUQE scale was applied to both groups. Results: The acupressure wristbands decreased the nausea and vomiting scores of the pregnant women in the experimental group without statistical significance but did not change the nausea and vomiting scores of the pregnant women in the control group. Conclusion: Acupressure wristbands can be used to prevent nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

A new dual-channel probe based on rhodamine B derivative (MSB) was successfully designed, synthesized, characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR), Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Single Crystal X-rayDiffraction, and the sensing abilities toward Fe3+ cation have been demonstrated and the probe was successfully utilized for fluorescence imaging of Fe3+ in living cells. The probe demonstrated quite fast, sensitive, and selective response to Fe3+ by causing an extreme enhancement in UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques in the buffered aqueous media which makes MSB a dual-channel probe. While the color of MSB solution was initially light yellow, it turned pink in the presence of Fe3+, which provided highly selective naked-eye determination among several ions as alkaline, alkaline-earth, and transition metal ions. After that, the probe was easily applied to paper strips and real samples such as drinking waters and supplementary iron tablets for sensing Fe3+ in an aqueous solution. The detection limit (LOD) and the response time of the probe were determined as 4.85x10-9 M and 4 min, respectively, which are quite lower compared with other rhodamine based Fe3+ sensors in the literature. According to Job's plot, 1H NMR titration, MALDI-TOF MS, XPS, and DFT study techniques, the complexation ratio between MSB and Fe3+ was found as 1:1. Moreover, the spectral response was reversible with alternately addition of Fe3+ or Na2EDTA to the MSB solution. In addition, fluorescence imaging in NIH/3T3 mouse fibroblast cells and studies in real samples with a quite high recovery rate exhibited that the probe is qualified for detection of Fe3+ ion with multiple practical usages.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficiencies of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and intratympanic steroid (ITS)treatment for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearingloss (ISSHL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 136 patients who were treated for ISSHL were reviewed fromthemedical records. All of the patients were given systemic steroid therapy (SST). Among them,33patients received HBOT and 36 patients received ITS treatment following SST. The starting time to treatment, risk factors, hearing level, hearing gain (HG), and recovery rate were evaluated from retrospectiverecords. RESULTS: No substantial change in HG was observed for either the HBOT or ITS treatment cohort (p>0.05). But the time to recovery was higher in the ITS treatment cohort (40%) than in theHBOT cohort (17%). The starting time to ITS treatment was 4 days (range: 1-30) and that to HBOT was 8 days (range:3-30). There was a significant difference in the starting time to treatment (Mann-Whitney U-test, p=0.043). Also, hearing loss in the HBOT group was significantly higher than in the ITS treatment group. A significant difference was observed before and after ITS treatment (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: In patients compared with late-onset treatment, ITS may be more effective than HBO after SST failure. It can be used as salvage therapy in patients with ISSHL who are unresponsive to a primary systemic steroid. We observed that HBOT didnot improve results when it was started late. Therefore, more studies that include both ITS treatment and HBOTas anearly treatment option are needed.

We aimed to investigate the effects of grape seed extract (GSE) and vitamin E (Vit E) on oxidative stress and apoptosis in the hippocampus of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. In Control, Diabetic, and Diabetic treated with GSE (Diabetic+GSE) and vitamin E (Diabetic+Vit E) groups, oxidative stress index (OSI), TUNEL staining and Bcl-2, Bcl-XL, Bax, caspase-3, -9, and -8, Cyt-c, TNF-α, and NF-κB gene expressions were evaluated. OSI was significantly increased in the plasma and hippocampus of the Diabetic compared to Control group and decreased in Diabetic+GSE and Diabetic+Vit E groups compared to Diabetic. TUNEL positive neurons significantly increased in the hippocampus of the Diabetic group compared to Control and decreased in Diabetic+GSE (more prominently) and Diabetic+Vit E groups compared to Diabetic. In the hippocampus of the Diabetic group, Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL gene expressions were significantly decreased; Bax, caspase-3, -9, and -8, Cyt-c, TNF-α, and NF-κB gene expressions were significantly increased compared to Control. In Diabetic+GSE and Diabetic+Vit E groups, Bcl-2 gene expressions were significantly increased; Bcl-XL gene expressions did not differ compared to the Diabetic group. The expression of Bax, caspase-3, -9, and -8, Cyt-c, TNF-α, and NF-κB genes in the Diabetic+GSE group and the expression of caspase-3 and -9, TNF-α, and NF-κB genes in the Diabetic+Vit E group were significantly decreased compared to Diabetic. In conclusion, GSE (more prominently) and vitamin E decreased oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis occurring in the hippocampus of diabetic rats.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the characteristics and possible origin of reversed ipsilateral acoustic reflex. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENTS: Sixty-three ears in 52 patients (mean age 37.6 years) with unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and 45 age- and sex-matched persons as controls. METHODS: Audiometry and impedance audiometry examinations were studied retrospectively. Hearing test records were investigated, and patients with unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss were included. Forty-five age- and sex-matched persons served as controls. The ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic reflex patterns of these patients were investigated. Reflex-forming acoustic thresholds and latencies of ipsilateral reversed (positive) reflexes were compared with ipsilateral negative (upward) reflexes. RESULTS: The ipsilateral acoustic reflexes of 18 of 63 ears with sensorineural hearing loss were absent, and the remaining 45 were reversed (positive). A significant difference was found between ipsilateral reversed and ipsilateral negative acoustic reflex thresholds (p < .001) and latencies (p < .001). No statistically significant differences were found between ipsilateral and contralateral negative reflex latencies. CONCLUSIONS: The reversed acoustic reflex pattern is not an artifact but a physiologic event. This reflex does not appear to be related to stapedius or tensor tympani muscle contraction. We believe that the etiology of the reversed reflex is related to the system that contains the tympanic membrane, malleus, and incus and their ligaments but not the middle ear muscles.

Mirtazapine is an antidepressant exhibiting both noradrenergic and serotonergic activity. We have investigated the effects of mirtazapine on pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)- and maximal electroconvulsive shock (MES)-induced seizures in mice. Mirtazapine (1.25-20mg/kg) or saline was administered, and locomotor activity was evaluated for 30 min. One hour after administration of mirtazapine (1.25-5mg/kg) or saline, PTZ (80 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally into the mice. Immediately afterward, times of onset of the first myoclonic jerk (FMJ), generalized clonic seizures (GCS), and tonic extension (TE) were recorded. In the MES groups, we used the MES protocol to induce convulsions characterized by tonic hindlimb extension. Similarly, 1h after mirtazapine or saline administration, an electroshock was evoked by ear-clip electrodes to induce convulsion. Mirtazapine, at 10 and 20 mg/kg, depressed locomotor activity. Doses of 1.25-5mg/kg had no significant effect on the time of onset of FMJ, GCS, or TE induced by PTZ; on the duration of GCS and TE; or on the latency to reinstatement of the righting reflex after MES administration. Our results suggest that mirtazapine neither aggravates nor alleviates PTZ- or MES-induced seizures in mice.
