RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, an age-related disease, is characterized by a gradual loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. It has been linked to abnormal organelle function in myotubes, including the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Recent studies revealed that mitochondria-associated membranes (MAM), the sites connecting mitochondria and the ER, may be implicated in skeletal muscle aging. In this arena, the potential of Polygonatum sibiricum polysaccharide (PSP) emerges as a beacon of hope. PSP, with its remarkable antioxidant and anti-senescence properties, is on the cusp of a therapeutic revolution, offering a promising strategy to mitigate the impacts of sarcopenia. PURPOSE: The objective of this research is to explore the effects of PSP on age-related muscle dysfunction and the underlying mechanisms involved both in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: In this investigation, we used in vitro experiments using D-galactose (D-gal)-induced aging in C2C12 myotubes and in vivo experiments on aged mice. Key indices were assessed, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, mitochondrial function, the expression of aging-related markers, and the key proteins of mitochondria and MAM fraction. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to mitochondria and ER were identified, and bioinformatic analyses were performed to explore underlying mechanisms. Muscle mass and function were determined to evaluate the quantity and quality of skeletal muscle in vivo. RESULTS: PSP treatment effectively mitigated oxidative stress and mitochondrial malfunction caused by D-gal in C2C12 myotubes, preserving mitochondrial fitness and reducing MAM formation. Besides, PSP attenuated D-gal-induced increases in Ca2+ concentrations intracellularly by modulating the calcium-related proteins, which were also confirmed by gene ontology (GO) analysis of DEGs. In aged mice, PSP increased muscle mass and improved grip strength, hanging time, and other parameters while reducing ROS levels and increasing antioxidant enzyme activities in skeletal muscle tissue. CONCLUSION: PSP offers protection against age-associated muscle impairments. The proposed mechanism suggests that modulation of calcium homeostasis via regulation of the MAM results in a favorable functional outcome during skeletal muscle aging. The results of this study highlight the prospect of PSP as a curative intervention for sarcopenia and affiliated pathological conditions, warranting further investigation.

RESUMO

Superbug infections and transmission have become major challenges in the contemporary medical field. The development of novel antibacterial strategies to efficiently treat bacterial infections and conquer the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is extremely important. In this paper, a bimetallic CuCo-doped nitrogen-carbon nanozyme-functionalized hydrogel (CuCo/NC-HG) has been successfully constructed. It exhibits photoresponsive-enhanced enzymatic effects under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (808 nm) with strong peroxidase (POD)-like and oxidase (OXD)-like activities. Upon NIR irradiation, CuCo/NC-HG possesses photodynamic activity for producing singlet oxygen(1O2), and it also has a high photothermal conversion effect, which not only facilitates the elimination of bacteria but also improves the efficiency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and accelerates the consumption of GSH. CuCo/NC-HG shows a lower hemolytic rate and better cytocompatibility than CuCo/NC and possesses a positive charge and macroporous skeleton for restricting negatively charged bacteria in the range of ROS destruction, strengthening the antibacterial efficiency. Comparatively, CuCo/NC and CuCo/NC-HG have stronger bactericidal ability against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli (AmprE. coli) through destroying the cell membranes with a negligible occurrence of AMR. More importantly, CuCo/NC-HG plus NIR irradiation can exhibit satisfactory bactericidal performance in the absence of H2O2, avoiding the toxicity from high-concentration H2O2. In vivo evaluation has been conducted using a mouse wound infection model and histological analyses, and the results show that CuCo/NC-HG upon NIR irradiation can efficiently suppress bacterial infections and promote wound healing, without causing inflammation and tissue adhesions.

RESUMO

Exploring the tradeoff and synergy relationship among ecosystem services in the Yellow River Delta High-Efficiency Eco-Economic Zone is of great practical significance for regional ecosystem service function zoning and high-quality development. Using the InVEST model, spatial auto-correlation and trade-off synergism (ESTD) model, we analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of five ecosystem services (habitat quality, carbon storage, soil conservation, water conservation, and water purification), as well as their trade-off and synergistic relationships at the township scale from 2000 to 2020. The results showed that habitat quality, carbon storage, and nitrogen and phosphorus output decreased as a whole from 2000 to 2020, and soil conservation and water purification increased. Habitat quality showed a distribution pattern of high in the north and low in the south, and carbon sto-rage, nitrogen and phosphorus output, soil conservation and water purification showed a pattern of low in the north and high in the south. During the study period, synergistic relationships among the five ecosystem services were predominant in both time cross-section and time period, but there were still differences, with synergistic relationships mainly between carbon storage and other services in time cross-section, and between habitat quality and other ser-vices in time period. Our results can provide theoretical guidance and practical reference for the enhancement of ecosystem services and the zoning of ecosystem functions, as well as basic support for the optimization of spatial patterns of national territory.

RESUMO

There are >350 species of the Ophiobolus genus, which is not yet very well-known and lacks research reports on secondary metabolites. Three new 3,4-benzofuran polyketides 1-3, a new 3,4-benzofuran polyketide racemate 4, two new pairs of polyketide enantiomers (±)-5 and (±)-7, two new acetophenone derivatives 6 and 8, and three novel 1,4-dioxane aromatic polyketides 9-11, were isolated from a fungus Ophiobolus cirsii LZU-1509 derived from an important medicinal and economic crop Anaphalis lactea. The isolation was guided by LC-MS/MS-based GNPS molecular networking analysis. The planar structures and relative configurations were mainly elucidated by NMR and HR-ESI-MS data. Their absolute configurations were determined by using X-ray diffraction analysis and via comparing computational and experimental ECD, NMR, and specific optical rotation data. 9 possesses an unreported 5/6/6/6/5 five-ring framework with a 1,4-dioxane, and 10 and 11 feature unprecedented 6/6/6/5 and 6/6/5/6 four-ring frames containing a 1,4-dioxane. The biosynthetic pathways of 9-11 were proposed. 1-11 were nontoxic in HT-1080 and HepG2 tumor cells at a concentration of 20 µM, whereas 3 and 5 exerted higher antioxidant properties in the hydrogen peroxide-stimulated model in the neuron-like PC12 cells. They could be potential antioxidant agents for neuroprotection.

RESUMO

Chaenomeles sinensis has traditionally been used as an herbal medicine due to its characteristics that protect against inflammation, hypertension, and mutagenesis. However, the effect of Chaenomeles sinensis extract (CSE) on allergic rhinitis (AR) and its underlying mechanisms have yet to be thoroughly investigated. The current study explored the likely effect of CSE on AR in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR mouse model. To this end, OVA-specific immunoglobulins, nasal symptoms, cytokine production, the infiltration of inflammatory cells, and nasal histopathology were assessed to determine the role of CSE against AR. The supplementation of CSE was found to suppress OVA-specific IgE, while OVA-specific IgG2a was increased in the serum. Further, CSE ameliorated the production of T helper type 2 (Th2) cytokines whereas it increased Th1 cytokine levels in nasal lavage fluid. Moreover, the CSE treatment group exhibited significant inhibition of IL-33/ST2 signaling. Subsequently, CES reversed the OVA-induced enhancement of epithelial permeability and upregulated E-cadherin, thus indicating that CES plays a protective role on epithelial barrier integrity. Altogether, the oral administration of CSE effectively controlled allergic response by restricting the buildup of inflammatory cells, enhancing nasal and lung histopathological traits, and regulating cytokines associated with inflammation. Collectively, the results show that the supplementation of CSE at different doses effectively regulated AR, thus suggesting the therapeutic efficiency of CSE in suppressing airway diseases.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the drug-resistant gene characteristics and core genome characteristics of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae (CR-ECL) in rural residents of Weifang City, Shandong Province. Methods: Fecal samples were collected from rural community residents in Weifang City, Shandong Province in 2017. Drug-resistant strains were screened using a carbapenem-resistant enterobacter chromogenic medium. CR-ECL positive strains were acquired via Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry(MALDI-TOFMS) analysis. The antibiotic resistance phenotype of CR-ECL was determined using a microbroth dilution assay. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) and analysis were conducted, along with an examination of the immediate vicinity of the blaNDM gene and phylogenetic analysis of the strains. Results: A total of 628 fecal samples were collected and tested, of which 6 were CR-ECL positive (detection rate 0.96%), all exhibiting multiple drug resistance (MDR) phenotypes. Six CR-ECL strains had four MLST genotypes (ST), all of which carried multiple drug resistance genes (blaNDM-1, blaNDM-5, etc.) and virulence genes (acrA, acrB, entB, fepC, etc.). There were mobile genetic elements ISAba125, TN3-IS3000, TN3 and IS5 in the genetic environment surrounding the blaNDM gene. The phylogenetic tree showed that the multi-locus sequence typing of the core genome (cgMLST) was consistent with the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) results. The cgMLST results showed that the allele differences between strains 2BC0101B and 2BC0251B, 2BG0561B and 2BI0221B were 2 and 1, respectively. The SNPs results showed that the above two pairs of bacteria also clustered together. It was found that the strains of chicken fecal samples in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database were located in the center of the evolutionary tree, and the local sequences could be traced back to American human sequences. Conclusion: Multidrug-resistant CR-ECL is detected in rural community residents in Weifang City, Shandong Province.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Inulae Herba (IH) is known as Jinfeicao recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia with effects of lowering qi and eliminating phlegm, and used for the treatment of pulmonary diseases. However, its protective mechanism on pulmonary diseases, especially acute lung injury (ALI), is still undefined. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to explore anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation effects of IH and its underlying mechanism for treating ALI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We constructed a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-ALI mouse model to reveal the therapeutical effect of IH. Western blot, real-time quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, small RNA interference, immunohistochemical staining, and the dual-luciferase experiment were performed to study the mechanism of IH for treating ALI. RESULTS: IH attenuated LPS-mediated pathological changes (e.g. pneumonedema and pulmonary congestion) through inactivation of macrophages in an ALI mouse model. The result of flow cytometry demonstrated that IH regulated the homeostasis of M1 (CD80+CD206-) and M2 (CD80+CD206+) phenotype macrophages. Furthermore, IH suppressed mRNA expressions of M1 phenotype markers, such as iNOS and IL-6, whereas promoted mRNA expressions of M2 phenotype markers, such as ARG1 and RETNLA in LPS-mediated mice. Notably, IH targeted Keap1 to activate the Nrf2 receptor, exerting its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation effects proved by using immunohistochemical staining, dual-luciferase, and Keap1 knockdown technologies. CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that targeting Keap1 with IH alleviated LPS-mediated ALI, and it could serve as a herbal agent for developing anti-ALI drugs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To establish a MM patient-derived tumor xenograft model (MM-PDX) in zebrafish, and to evaluate the anti-myeloma activity of indirubin-3'-monoxime(I3MO) using this model. METHODS: Zebrafish embryos 2 days after fertilization were transplanted with fluorescence labeled myeloma primary tumor cells, the survival of primary tumor cells in zebrafish was observed at 0,16 and 24 hours after cell injection. The zebrafish embryos after tumor cell transplantation were randomly divided into control group, BTZ treatment and I3MO treatment group. Before and 24 hours after treatment with BTZ and I3MO, the positive area with calcein or Dil in zebrafish were observed under fluorescence microscope to reflect the survival of tumor cells, and it was verified. RESULTS: MM patient derived tumor cells survived in zebrafish. The construction of MM-PDX was successful. Compared with control group, the fluo- rescence area of the BTZ and I3MO treatment groups in zebrafish were significantly decreased(P<0.05), and BTZ and I3MO significantly inhibited the survival of MM cells in zebrafish. CONCLUSION: MM-PDX model was successfully established. Zebrafish model derived from tumor cells of MM patients can be used as a tool for drug screening of MM.

RESUMO

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, which is characterized by inflammation, with many symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloody stool, and weight loss. It is difficult to completely cure and promising therapeutic drug candidates are urgently needed. Citropten, a coumarin-like compound found in traditional Chinese medicine such as Finger Citron Fruit, notopterygium root and citrus peel, has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells, protect against depression and suppress the production of inflammatory mediators. In this study, we demonstrated that citropten could alleviate dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute and recurrent colitis in mice, with significant improvement in body weight loss, disease activity index, shortened colon length and histological changes. Moreover, citropten dramatically decreased the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in colon tissues and effectively suppressed the proportion of Th17 cells in spleen. Mechanism investigations revealed that citropten significantly inhibited the activation of NF-κB and JAK/STAT3 signaling pathways, thus leading to decreased inflammation, Th17 cells and alleviative colitis. These findings provide novel insights into the anti-colitis effect of citropten, which may be a promising drug candidate for treatment of IBD.

RESUMO

Fallopia japonica (Asian knotweed) is a medicinal herb traditionally used to treat inflammation, among other conditions. However, the effects of F. japonica root extract (FJE) on airway inflammation associated with combined allergic rhinitis and asthma (CARAS) and the related mechanisms have not been investigated. This study examined the effect of FJE against CARAS in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced CARAS mouse model. Six-week-old male BALB/c mice were randomly segregated into six groups. Mice were sensitized intraperitoneally with OVA on days 1, 8, and 15, and administered saline, Dexamethasone (1.5 mg/kg), or FJE (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg) once a day for 16 days. Nasal symptoms, inflammatory cells, OVA-specific immunoglobulins, cytokine production, mast cell activation, and nasal histopathology were assessed. Administration of FJE down-regulated OVA-specific IgE and up-regulated OVA-specific IgG2a in serum. FJE reduced the production of T helper (Th) type 2 cytokines, and the Th1 cytokine levels were enhanced in nasal and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Moreover, FJE positively regulated allergic responses by reducing the accumulation of inflammatory cells, improving nasal and lung histopathological characteristics, and inhibiting inflammation-associated cytokines. FJE positively modulated the IL-33/TSLP/NF-B signaling pathway, which is involved in regulating inflammatory cells, immunoglobulin levels, and pro-inflammatory cytokines at the molecular level.

RESUMO

Black soldier fly (BSF) and thermophilic composting (TC) treatments are commonly adopted to manage food waste. In this study, 30 days of TC of food waste following seven days BSF pretreatment (BC) was compared to 37 days of TC of food waste (TC, the control). Fluorescence spectrum and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis were used to compare the BC and TC treatments. Results showed that BC could decrease protein-like substances and increase humus substances more quickly, and that the humification index of compost products was 106.8% higher than that of TC, suggesting that the humification process was accelerated by BSF pretreatment resulting in a 21.6% shorter maturity time. Meanwhile, the concentrations of total and available phosphorus rose from 7.2 and 3.3 g kg-1 to 44.2 and 5.5 g kg-1, respectively, which were 90.5% and 118.8% higher in compost products from BC as compared to those in TC. Furthermore, BC had higher richness and diversity of humus synthesis and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), with Nocardiopsis (53.8%) and Pseudomonas (47.0%) being the dominant PSB. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the introduction of BSF gut bacteria contributed to the effectiveness of related functional bacteria, resulting in a rapid humification process and phosphorus activation. Our findings advance understanding of the humification process and provide novel perspectives on food waste management.

RESUMO

Chinese patent medicines(CPMs) are unique therapeutic drugs in China. Establishing and improving the evaluation criteria is an important measure to promote the high-quality development of CPMs. Based on the "evaluation criteria of high-grade CPMs with quality as the core index" established by our group in 2018, the "high-quality evaluation criteria for CPMs based on whole process control" was proposed in the present study in 2022. The scope of application and basic principles of the new criteria were clarified. A quality evaluation scoring table was established in the new criteria, including five parts: raw material selection, production process, quality control, efficacy evaluation, and brand building. The technical evaluation indexes involved have increased from 20% in the original criteria to 70% in the new criteria, and efficacy evaluation has been added in the new criteria. The subjective evaluation indicators account for a large proportion in the original criteria, which is prone to bias. The improved criteria overcome this shortcoming. It is expected that the new criteria as a basis can play a better role in the selection of high-quality products of CPMs, guide enterprises and institutions to participate actively in the evaluation and research of high-quality CPMs, and promote the high-quality development of CPMs.

RESUMO

The co-presence of chromium (VI) [Cr(VI)] and uranium (VI) [U(VI)] is widely found in groundwater, imposing severe risks on human health. Although zerovalent iron [Fe(0)] supports superb performance for bioreduction of Cr(VI) and U(VI) individually, the biogeochemical process involving their concurrent removal with Fe(0) as electron donor remains unexplored. In the 6-d batch study, 86.1% ± 0.7% of Cr(VI) was preferentially eliminated, while 78.4% ± 0.5% of U(VI) removal was achieved simultaneously. Efficient removal of Cr(VI) (100%) and U(VI) (51.2% ∼ 100%) was also obtained in a continuous 160-d column experiment. As a result, Cr(VI) and U(VI) were reduced to less mobile Cr(III) and insoluble U(IV), respectively. 16 S rRNA sequencing was performed to investigate the dynamics of microbial community. Delftia, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and Desulfomicrobium were the major contributors mediating the bioreduction process. The initial Cr(VI) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) incurred pronounced effects on community diversity, which in turn altered the reactor's performance. The enrichment of Cr(VI) resistance (chrA), U(VI) reduction (dsrA) and Fe(II) oxidation (mtrA) genes were observed by reverse transcription qPCR. Cytochrome c, glutathione and NADH as well as VFAs and gas metabolites also involved in the bioprocess. This study demonstrated a promising approach for removing the combined contaminants of Cr(VI) and U(VI) in groundwater.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Decreased lymphangiogenesis contributes to impaired diabetic wound healing. Although negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been shown to be effective in the treatment of recalcitrant wounds, its impact on lymphangiogenesis remains to be elucidated. In this study, the authors investigate the mechanisms of lymphangiogenesis following NPWT treatment of diabetic murine wound healing. METHODS: Full-thickness dorsal skin wounds (1 × 1 cm 2 ) were excised on 30 db/db mice. The mice were either treated with occlusive covering (control group, n = 15), or received a 7-day treatment of continuous NPWT at -125 mmHg (NPWT group, n = 15). The wounds were photographed on days 0, 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28. Wound tissue was harvested on days 10, 14, 21, and 28 for quantitative analysis. Functional analysis of lymphatic drainage was performed on days 14 and 28 with Evans blue dye tracing. RESULTS: Lymphatic density and diameter, as visualized through podoplanin probing, was significantly higher in the NPWT group compared to the control group ( P < 0.001). NPWT up-regulated the expression of lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1) at the protein level ( P = 0.04), and significant differences were noted in lymphatic density as assessed by LYVE-1 staining ( P = 0.001). Leukocyte infiltration was significantly higher in the NPWT group ( P = 0.01). A higher speed of wound closure ( P < 0.0001) and greater wound bed thickness ( P < 0.0001) were noted in the NPWT group compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: NPWT increased the lymphatic vessel density and diameter with LYVE-1 up-regulation. NPWT therefore plays a positive role in lymphangiogenesis in diabetic wound healing. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The authors' study investigates the association of NPWT and lymphatics and underlines the importance of a more in-depth investigation of the role of lymphatic vessels in wound healing.

RESUMO

Half of the world's population is Helicobacter pylori carrier. Updated guidelines and consensus have been issued across regions with the main aim of reducing social transmission and increasing H. pylori eradication rate. Although alternative therapies including traditional Chinese medicine and probiotics have also been used to improve H. pylori eradication rate in clinical practice, current mainstream treatment is still dependent on triple and quadruple therapies that includes antibacterial agents (e.g., amoxicillin and furazolidone) and proton pump inhibitor. Researches also assessed the eradication rate of optimized high-dose dual therapy in treating H. pylori infection. With the increase of antibiotic resistance rate, the treatment strategies for H. pylori infection are constantly adjusted and improved. Besides, low medication compliance is another key influencing factor for H. pylori treatment failure. Emerging studies indicate that pharmacists' intervention and new pharmaceutical care methods can enhance patient medication compliance, reduce adverse drug reactions, and improve H. pylori eradication rate. The purpose of this review is to summarize the advances in treating H. pylori infection and highlight the necessity of developing novel strategies to cope with the increasing challenges and to achieve personalized medication. Also, this review attaches great importance to pharmacists in optimizing H. pylori treatment outcomes as a routine part of therapy.

RESUMO

Objective: Despite the significant function of lymphatics in wound healing, and frequent clinical use of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), the effect of mechanical force application on lymphangiogenesis remains to be elucidated. We utilize a murine incisional wound healing model to assess the mechanisms of lymphangiogenesis following NPWT. Approach: Dorsal incisional skin wounds were created on diabetic mice (genetically obese leptin receptor-deficient mice [db/db]; n = 30) and covered with an occlusive dressing (Control, n = 15) or NPWT (-125 mmHg, continuous, 24 h for 7 days; NPWT, n = 15). The wounds were macroscopically assessed for 28 days. Tissue was harvested on day 10 for analysis. Qualitative functional analysis of lymphatic drainage was performed on day 28 using Evans Blue staining (n = 2). Results: NPWT increased lymphatic vessel density (40 ± 20 vs. 12 ± 6 podoplanin [PDPN]+ and 25 ± 9 vs. 14 ± 8 lymphatic vessel endothelial receptor 1 [LYVE-1]+) and vessel diameter (28 ± 9 vs. 12 ± 2 µm). Western blotting verified the upregulation of LYVE-1 with NPWT. Leukocyte presence was higher with NPWT (22% ± 3.7% vs. 9.1% ± 4.1% lymphocyte common antigen [CD45]+) and the leukocytes were predominately B cells clustered within vessels (8.8% ± 2.5% vs. 18% ± 3.6% B-lymphocyte antigen CD20 [CD20]+). Macrophage presence was lower in the NPWT group. Lymphatic drainage was increased in the NPWT group, which exhibited greater Evans Blue positivity. Innovation: The lymphangiogenic effects take place independent of macrophage infiltration, appearing to correlate with B cell presence. Conclusion: NPWT promotes lymphangiogenesis in incisional wounds, significantly increasing the lymph vessel density and diameter. This study highlights the potential of NPWT to stimulate lymphatic drainage and wound healing of surgical incisions.

RESUMO

Context: Since December 2019, medical practitioners discovered a novel coronavirus causing an acute respiratory-tract infection in some hospitals in Wuhan, Hubei Province. COVID-19 has spread globally, making it an epidemic worldwide at present. Understanding the mental-health responses of college students to COVID-19 can help a school staff to better guide students seeking education. Objective: The study aimed to explore the differences between nonmedical and medical college students during the COVID-19 epidemic in their cognitive interest about the disease, preventive behaviors, psychological effects, and job-search intentions, hoping to provide more targeted measures for virus-coping education for college students. Design: The research team conducted a cross-sectional study, using an anonymous online questionnaire. Setting: The study took place at Shanghai, China. Participants: Participants were 1648 college students studying different specialties in various provinces of China, 485 nonmedical students and 1163 medical students. Outcome Measures: The survey's questions covered the respondents': (1) general demographic characteristics, (2) cognitive interest and knowledge about COVID-19 and its infectiousness as well as efforts at active learning about infectious diseases and viruses, (3) awareness of precautionary behaviors against COVID-19, (4) effects on mental health, and (5) effects on job-search intentions. The research team used descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests to analyze the survey data. Results: Among nonmedical students: (1) 297 participants (61.2%) were interested in learning about COVID-19, (2) 321 participants (66.2%) took the initiative to learn about the virus, (3) 301 participants (62.1%) took the initiative to learn about infectious disease, and (4) 151 participants (31.1%) watched medical-themed movies or TV series about COVID-19. Among medical students, the corresponding proportions were 772 participants (66.4%), 855 participants (73.5%), 791 participants (68.1%), and 791 participants (68.1%), respectively. Among nonmedical students, 223 participants (46.0%) had N95 masks available, 429 participants (88.5%) had disinfectant supplies available, 271 participants (55.9%) wore goggles in public places, 75 participants (15.5%) chose public transportation, and 77 participants (15.9%) were exposed to public places in the week prior to the survey. Among medical students, the corresponding proportions were 470 participants (40.4%), 935 participants (80.4%), 575 participants (49.4%), 243 participants (20.9%), and 297 participants (25.5%), respectively. Furthermore, COVID-19 had a stronger effect on medical students' psychology and job-search ambitions. Conclusions: The news about COVID-19 piqued the interest of medical students. Nonmedical students had stronger protective behavior than medical students. The COVID-19 outbreak had a significant influence on medical students' lives, studies, and moods. In addition, COVID-19 had a greater impact on the job-search intentions of medical students.
