Eight undescribed phenylpropanoid-dihydrochalcone hybrids, namely (+)- and (-)-malahupin A, (+)- and (-)-malahupin B, (±)-malahupin C, malahupinosides A and B, 7‴-epi-malahupinoside B, together with two known compounds, phloretin and phlorizin, were isolated from the leaves of the folk medicinal plant Malus hupehensis. Their structures were elucidated by extensive NMR and MS spectroscopic methods, chiral-phase analysis, and ECD calculations. Compounds (+)-malahupin B and malahupinoside B showed weak inhibition activities against the nitric oxide production in liposaccharide-induced murine RAW264.7 macrophages with IC50 values of 36.7 and 27.0 µM, respectively. Compounds (+)- and (-)-malahupin A, (+)- and (-)-malahupin B exhibited significant α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, with IC50 values of 22.5, 19.1, 19.2, and 17.4 µM, respectively. The postulated biosynthetic pathways to these hybrid compounds were proposed. This work represents the first report of the natural phenylpropanoid-dihydrochalcone hybrid compound, and lays foundation for the study on the bioactive principles of the ethnic hypoglycemic medicinal plant.

Biological geochemistry is a main suggested cause of Kashin-Beck disease (KBD), due to the absence or excess of elements in the environment. Initially, Se deficiency is regarded as the most key role in the etiology of KBD, and selenium supplementation effectively helps to prevent and control KBD. However, several elements are reported to be relevant to KBD or selenium in succession, which indicated selenium deficiency is not the original etiology of KBD. The study comprehensively analyzed the characteristics of the bio-element profile of KBD and further re-examined the unique role of selenium in etiology. The study measured 14 elements, including sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, selenium, iodine, manganese, lead, arsenic, and mercury, which were detected from hair samples collected from 150 boys. Research participants were separated based on whether they had received any preventative treatment (with and without selenium supplementation). From endemic areas, 30 KBD and 30 healthy children without any preventative treatment were selected alongside 30 KBD and 30 healthy children with selenium supplementation. The participants from endemic areas were then compared to 30 healthy children living in non-endemic areas. Compared to the non-endemic group, the levels of iron and manganese were all significantly higher in the endemic groups and were further elevated in KBD participants (p < 0.05). In contrast, selenium and iodine levels in endemic areas were much lower than those of the control group (p < 0.05). The proportions of selenium excess (p < 0.05) and iodine deficiency (p < 0.05) in endemic groups were significantly lower than participants from non-endemic areas. Meanwhile, excess levels of iron (p < 0.05) and manganese (p < 0.05) were higher in the endemic groups. Moreover, the proportions of Zn/Fe and Se/Mn were found to be significantly lower in endemic area participants than those in the control group (p < 0.05). Three pairs of elements had a correlation coefficient value of more than 0.6: 0.7423 for manganese and calcium, 0.6446 for potassium and sodium, and 0.6272 for manganese and iron. The ratios of Se/Mn and Zn/Fe were associated with a correlation coefficient value of 0.8055. Magnesium, sodium, copper, and iodine levels were meticulously examined using binary regression analysis. This was also used to determine the ratios of Ca/Mg, Ca/P, Zn/Fe, Se/Mn, and Se/I. Thus, the study largely revealed the vital role of manganese, iron, and iodine (in conjunction with selenium) in KBD etiology and pathogenesis. High manganese and iron levels with low selenium and iodine levels were identified as characteristic features of the bio-element profile of KBD. The different element ratios reflect the interaction between several elements. The most significant of these were the proportions of Se/Mn and Zn/Fe, which may be significant in the occurrence and development of KBD.

In this study, we aimed to explore the effectiveness of selenium on the chondrocyte glycoprotein glycosylation which plays important roles in the pathogenesis of Kashin-Beck disease (KBD). Cartilage samples were collected from KBD patients after total knee replacement surgery. Chondrocytes were cultured with sodium selenium. The group of chondrocytes which were cultured without adding sodium selenium was considered as control group. Lectin microarray was used to screen the differences in lectin levels between KBD and KBD with selenium groups. Stronger signals for Bandeiraea simplicifolia (BS-I), Hippeastrum hybrid lectin (HHL), Pisum sativum agglutinin (PSA), Psophocarpus tetragonolobus lectin I (PTL-I), Psophocarpus tetragonolobus lectin II (PTL-II), Sophora japonica agglutinin (SJA), Lotus tetragonolobus lectin (LTL), and Triticum vulgaris (WGA) were observed in the KBD group. Meanwhile, Aleuria aurantia lectin (AAL), Lens culinaris agglutinin (LCA), Lycopersicon esculentum (tomato) lectin (LEL), Peanut agglutinin (PNA), and Sambucus nigra lectin (SNA) signals were lower in the KBD group. Selenium may have the function of influence the expression levels of carbohydrate chains Galα1,3-Gal, high mannose, and GlcNAc.

Three pairs of novel enantiomeric pyrrole alkaloids (1a/1b, 2a/2b, 3a/3b) were isolated from the leaves of Solanum rostratum and their structures were determined via NMR analyses and ECD calculation. All the enantiomers displayed different levels of antifeedant and growth-inhibitory activities against Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (a noxious herbivore for Solanaceae), especially 1a and 2a. Interestingly, the results showed enantioselectivity, in which that the pyrrole alkaloids with R configuration at C-2' showed stronger chemical defense function than their enantiomers.

The pulse is a key biomedical signal containing various human physiological and pathological information highly related to cardiovascular diseases. Pulse signals are often collected from the radial artery based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, or by using flexible pressure sensors. However, the wrist wrapped with a flexible pressure sensor exhibits unstable signals under hand motion because of the concave surface of the wrist. By contrast, fingertips have a convex surface and therefore show great promises in stable and long-term pulse monitoring. Despite the promising potential, the fingertip pulse signal is weak, calling for highly sensitive detecting devices. Here, a highly sensitive and flexible iontronic pressure sensor with a linear sensitivity of 13.5 kPa-1 , a swift response, and remarkable stability over 5000 loading/unloading cycles is developed. This sensor enables stable and high-resolution detection of pulse waveform under both static condition and finger motion. Fingertip pulse waveforms from subjects of different genders, age, and health conditions are collected and analyzed, suggesting that fingertip pulse information is highly similar to that of the radial artery. This work justifies that fingertip is an ideal platform for pulse signals monitoring, which would be a competitive alternative to existing complex health monitoring systems.

In this work, cobalt magnetic nanoporous carbon (Co-MNPC) is employed as an alternative to intensively used Fe3O4 cores for the preparation of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (Co-MNPC@MIPs) for the first time. Co-MNPC was prepared by one-step carbonization of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67). Compared with the traditional Fe3O4 core, Co-MNPC showed a high specific surface area and large pore volumes. The prepared adsorbents, which could be rapidly collected from a matrix by external magnetic field, were applied for solid-phase extraction of phthalate plasticizers in edible oil. Several requisite extraction parameters were optimized to achieve desired extraction performance. Under the optimum extraction conditions, Co-MNPC@MIPs displayed better performance than commercialized columns. An analysis method based on Co-MNPC@MIPs coupled with gas chromatography (GC) was established. The linear range was 1-150 µg mL-1, and the detection limit range was 0.010-0.025 µg mL-1. The spiked recovery rate of the five phthalate plasticizers was 81.6-102.2%, with a relative standard deviation of 3.25-12.02%. Finally, the proposed method showed good feasibility for phthalate plasticizer extraction from edible oil.
