RESUMO

Due to its high prevalence, poor prognosis, and heavy burden on healthcare costs, diabetic vascular complications have become a significant public health issue. Currently, the molecular and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying diabetes-induced vascular complications remain incompletely understood. Autophagy, a highly conserved process of lysosomal degradation, maintains intracellular homeostasis and energy balance via removing protein aggregates, damaged organelles, and exogenous pathogens. Increasing evidence suggests that dysregulated autophagy may contribute to vascular abnormalities in various types of blood vessels, including both microvessels and large vessels, under diabetic conditions. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) possesses the characteristics of "multiple components, multiple targets and multiple pathways," and its safety has been demonstrated, particularly with minimal toxicity in liver and kidney. Thus, TCM has gained increasing attention from researchers. Moreover, recent studies have indicated that Chinese herbal medicine and its active compounds can improve vascular damage in diabetes by regulating autophagy. Based on this background, this review summarizes the classification, occurrence process, and related molecular mechanisms of autophagy, with a focus on discussing the role of autophagy in diabetic vascular damage and the protective effects of TCM and its active compounds through the regulation of autophagy in diabetes. Moreover, we systematically elucidate the autophagic mechanisms by which TCM formulations, individual herbal extracts, and active compounds regulate diabetic vascular damage, thereby providing new candidate drugs for clinical treatment of vascular complications in diabetes. Therefore, further exploration of TCM and its active compounds with autophagy-regulating effects holds significant research value for achieving targeted therapeutic approaches for diabetic vascular complications.

Artemisia argyi is a traditional herbal medicine plant, and its folium artemisia argyi is widely in demand due to moxibustion applications globally. The Auxin/indole-3-acetic acid (Aux/IAA, or IAA) gene family has critical roles in the primary auxin-response process, with extensive involvement in plant development and stresses, controlling various essential traits of plants. However, the systematic investigation of the Aux/IAA gene family in A. argyi remains limited. In this study, a total of 61 Aux/IAA genes were comprehensively identified and characterized. Gene structural analysis indicated that 46 Aux/IAA proteins contain the four typical domains, and 15 Aux/IAA proteins belong to non-canonical IAA proteins. Collinear prediction and phylogenetic relationship analyses suggested that Aux/IAA proteins were grouped into 13 distinct categories, and most Aux/IAA genes might experience gene loss during the tandem duplication process. Promoter cis-element investigation indicated that Aux/IAA promoters contain a variety of plant hormone response and stress response cis-elements. Protein interaction prediction analysis demonstrated that AaIAA26/29/7/34 proteins are possibly core members of the Aux/IAA family interaction. Expression analysis in roots and leaves via RNA-seq data indicated that the expression of some AaIAAs exhibited tissue-specific expression patterns, and some AaIAAs were involved in the regulation of salt and saline-alkali stresses. In addition, RT-qPCR results indicated that AaIAA genes have differential responses to auxin, with complex response patterns in response to other hormones, indicating that Aux/IAA may play a role in connecting auxin and other hormone signaling pathways. Overall, these findings shed more light on AaIAA genes and offer critical foundational knowledge toward the elucidation of their function during plant growth, stress response, and hormone networking of Aux/IAA family genes in A. argyi.

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effect of motor evoked potential (MEP)-oriented scalp acupuncture combined with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on limb motor ability in patients with ischemic stroke hemiplegia. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with ischemic stroke hemiplegia were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 30 cases in each one. In addition to the medication treatment of internal medicine and comprehensive training of hemiplegic limbs, MEP-oriented scalp acupuncture combined with TMS was applied in the observation group, conventional scalp acupuncture at bilateral anterior oblique line of parietal and temporal regions combined with TMS was applied in the control group. The treatment was given once a day, 5 days a week for 4 weeks totally in the two groups. Before and after treatment, the scores of Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA), modified Ashworth scale (MAS) and modified Barthel index (MBI) were observed in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment, the FMA and MBI scores were increased compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.001), and the FMA and MBI scores in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the MAS scores of upper and lower limbs in the observation group were decreased compared with those before treatment (P<0.01, P<0.001), the MAS score of lower limb in the control group was decreased compared with that before treatment (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: MEP-oriented scalp acupuncture combined with TMS can effectively improve the limb motor ability, daily living ability and limb spasticity in patients with ischemic stroke hemiplegia.

RESUMO

One-for-all phototheranostics, referring to a single component simultaneously exhibiting multiple optical imaging and therapeutic modalities, has attracted significant attention due to its excellent performance in cancer treatment. Benefitting from the superiority in balancing the diverse competing energy dissipation pathways, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) are proven to be ideal templates for constructing one-for-all multimodal phototheranostic agents. However, to this knowledge, the all-round AIEgens that can be triggered by a second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) light have not been reported. Given the deep tissue penetration and high maximum permissible exposure of the NIR-II excitation light, herein, this work reports for the first time an NIR-II laser excitable AIE small molecule (named BETT-2) with multimodal phototheranostic features by taking full use of the advantage of AIEgens in single molecule-facilitated versatility as well as synchronously maximizing the molecular donor-acceptor strength and conformational distortion. As formulated into nanoparticles (NPs), the high performance of BETT-2 NPs in NIR-II light-driven fluorescence-photoacoustic-photothermal trimodal imaging-guided photodynamic-photothermal synergistic therapy of orthotopic mouse breast tumors is fully demonstrated by the systematic in vitro and in vivo evaluations. This work offers valuable insights for developing NIR-II laser activatable one-for-all phototheranostic systems.

Improving the adsorption selectivity, enhancing the extraction capacity, and ensuring the structural stability of the adsorbent are the key to realize the high efficiency recovery of uranium. In this work, we utilized the strong Lewis acid-base interaction between S2- and U(VI)O22+ coupling rapid electron transfer at the MnS/U(VI)O22+ solid-liquid interface to achieve excellent selectivity, high adsorption capacity, and rapid extraction of uranium. The as-synthesized MnS adsorbent exhibited an ultrahigh uranium extraction capacity (2457.05 mg g-1) and a rapid rate constant (K = 9.11 × 10-4 g h-1 mg-1) in seawater with 100.7 ppm of UO2(NO3)2 electrolyte. The kinetic simulation reveals that this adsorption process is a chemical adsorption process and conforms to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating electron transfer at the MnS/U(VI)O22+ solid-liquid interface. The relevant (quasi) in situ spectroscopic characterization and theoretical calculation results further revealed that the outstanding uranium extraction property of MnS could be attributed to the highly selective UO22+ adsorption of MnS with lower adsorption energy as a result of the strong interaction between S2- and UO22+ and the rapid mass transfer and interface electron transfer from S2- and low-valent Mn(II) to U(VI)O22+.

The sand and gravel fillers used in traditional bioretention cells are expensive and becoming increasingly scarce, and their performance is unstable. It is important to find a stable, reliable, and low-cost alternative filler for bioretention facilities. Using cement as a modified loess filler for bioretention cells is a low-cost and easily obtainable alternative. The loss rate and anti-scouring index of the cement-modified loess (CM) were analyzed under different curing times, cement addition amount, and compactness control conditions. This study found that the stability and strength of the cement-modified loess in water with a density of not less than 1.3 g/cm3, a curing time, of not less than 28 d and a cement addition amount not less than 10% meets the use requirements of the bioretention cell filler. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of cement-modified materials with a 10% cement addition and a curing time of 28 days (CM28) and 56 days (CM56). Cement-modified materials with 2% straw and a curing time of 56 days (CS56) showed that the three kinds of modified loess all contain calcium carbonate and that the surface contains hydroxyl and amino functional groups that can effectively remove phosphorus. The specific surface areas of the CM56, CM28, and CS56 samples were 12.53 m2/g, 24.731 m2/g, and 26.252 m2/g, respectively, which are significantly higher than that of sand (0.791 m2/g). At the same time, the adsorption capacity of the ammonia nitrogen and the phosphate that was present in the three modified materials is better than that of sand. CM56, like sand, has rich microbial communities, which can entirely remove nitrate nitrogen in water under anaerobic conditions, indicating that CM56 can be used as an alternative filler for bioretention cells. The production of cement-modified loess is simple and cost-effective, and using modified loess as a filler can reduce the use of stone resources or other on-site materials. Current methods for improving the filler of bioretention cells are mainly based on sand. This experiment used loess to improve the filler. The performance of loess is better than sand, and can completely replace sand as the filler in bioretention cells.

Addressing the challenges of low detection precision and excessive parameter volume presented by the high resolution, significant scale variations, and complex backgrounds in UAV aerial imagery, this paper introduces MFP-YOLO, a lightweight detection algorithm based on YOLOv5s. Initially, a multipath inverse residual module is designed, and an attention mechanism is incorporated to manage the issues associated with significant scale variations and abundant interference from complex backgrounds. Then, parallel deconvolutional spatial pyramid pooling is employed to extract scale-specific information, enhancing multi-scale target detection. Furthermore, the Focal-EIoU loss function is utilized to augment the model's focus on high-quality samples, consequently improving training stability and detection accuracy. Finally, a lightweight decoupled head replaces the original model's detection head, accelerating network convergence speed and enhancing detection precision. Experimental results demonstrate that MFP-YOLO improved the mAP50 on the VisDrone 2019 validation and test sets by 12.9% and 8.0%, respectively, compared to the original YOLOv5s. At the same time, the model's parameter volume and weight size were reduced by 79.2% and 73.7%, respectively, indicating that MFP-YOLO outperforms other mainstream algorithms in UAV aerial imagery detection tasks.

Understanding the main driving factors of oasis river nutrients in arid areas is important to identify the sources of water pollution and protect water resources. Twenty-seven sub-watersheds were selected in the lower oasis irrigated agricultural reaches of the Kaidu River watershed in arid Northwest China, divided into the site, riparian, and catchment buffer zones. Data on four sets of explanatory variables (topographic, soil, meteorological elements, and land use types) were collected. The relationships between explanatory variables and response variables (total phosphorus, TP and total nitrogen, TN) were analyzed by redundancy analysis (RDA). Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to quantify the relationship between explanatory as well as response variables and fit the path relationship among factors. The results showed that there were significant differences in the TP and TN concentrations at each sampling point. The catchment buffer exhibited the best explanatory power of the relationship between explanatory and response variables based on PLS-SEM. The effects of various land use types, meteorological elements (ME), soil, and topography in the catchment buffer were responsible for 54.3% of TP changes and for 68.5% of TN changes. Land use types, ME and soil were the main factors driving TP and TN changes, accounting for 95.56% and 94.84% of the total effects, respectively. The study provides a reference for river nutrients management in arid oases with irrigated agriculture and a scientific and targeted basis to mitigate water pollution and eutrophication of rivers in arid lands.

Multimodal phototheranostics on the basis of a single molecule with one-for-all characteristics represents a convenient approach for effective cancer treatment. In this report, a versatile molecule featured by aggregation-induced emission, namely DHTDP, synchronously enabling second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence emission and efficient photothermal conversion is developed by elaborate structural modulation. By camouflaging DHTDP nanoparticles with cancer cell membrane, the resultant biomimetic nanoparticles exhibit significantly both facilitated delivery efficiency and homologous targeting capability, and afford precise imaging guidance and maximize therapeutic outcomes in form of NIR-II fluorescence imaging (FLI)-photoacoustic imaging (PAI)-photothermal imaging (PTI) trimodal imaging-guided photothermal therapy (PTT). This study presents the first example of biomimetic multimodal phototheranostics loaded by homogeneity-targeting cell membrane, thus brings a new insight into the exploration of superior phototheranostics for practical cancer theranostics.

Erchen decoction (ECD) is a traditional Chinese prescription widely used in the treatment of various diseases such as obesity, fatty liver, diabetes, and hypertension. In this study, we investigated the effect of ECD on fatty acid metabolism in a colorectal cancer (CRC) mouse model fed a high-fat (HF) diet. The HF-CRC mouse model was established by azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) combined with a high-fat diet. Mice were then gavaged with ECD. Change in the body weight was recorded every two weeks for 26 weeks. Changes in blood glucose (GLU), total cholesterol (TC), total triglycerides (TG), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Colorectal tissues were collected to observe changes in colorectal length and tumorigenesis. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and immunohistochemical staining were performed to observe changes in intestinal structure and inflammatory markers. Fatty acids and the expression of related genes in colorectal tissues were also studied. ECD gavage inhibited HF-induced weight gain. CRC induction and HF diet intake resulted in increased GLU, TC, TG, and CRP, where ECD gavage reduced these elevated indicators. ECD gavage also increased colorectal length and inhibited tumorigenesis. HE staining revealed that ECD gavage suppressed inflammatory infiltration of colorectal tissues. ECD gavage suppressed the fatty acid metabolism abnormalities caused by HF-CRC in colorectal tissues. Consistently, ECD gavage lowered ACSL4, ACSL1, CPT1A, and FASN levels in colorectal tissues. Conclusions. ECD inhibited HF-CRC progression through the regulation of fatty acid metabolism.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Tian-Men-Dong decoction (TD) has been able to effectively treat lung cancer in China for thousands of years. TD improves the quality of life in lung cancer patients by promoting nourishment of yin and reducing dryness, clearing the lung and removing toxins. Pharmacological studies show that TD contains active antitumour ingredients, but its underlying mechanism remains unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims at exploring potential mechanisms of TD in the treatment of lung cancer by regulating granulocytic-myeloid-derived suppressor cells (G-MDSCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An orthotopic lung cancer mouse model was generated by intrapulmonary injection with LLC-luciferase cells in immunocompetent C57BL/6 mice or immunodeficient nude mice. TD/saline was orally administered once to the model mice daily for 4 weeks. Live imaging was conducted to monitor tumour growth. Immune profiles were detected by flow cytometry. H&E and ELISA were applied to test the cytotoxicity of the TD treatment. RT-qPCR and western blotting were performed to detect apoptosis-related proteins in G-MDSCs. A neutralizing antibody (anti-Ly6G) was utilized to exhaust the G-MDSCs via intraperitoneal injection. G-MDSCs were adoptively transferred from wild-type tumour-bearing mice. Immunofluorescence, TUNEL and Annexin V/PI staining were conducted to analyse apoptosis-related markers. A coculture assay of purified MDSCs and T cells labelled with CFSE was performed to test the immunosuppressive activity of MDSCs. The presence of TD/IL-1ß/TD + IL-1ß in purified G-MDSCs cocultured with the LLC system was used for ex vivo experiments to detect IL-1ß-mediated apoptosis of G-MDSCs. RESULTS: TD prolonged the survival of immune competent C57BL/6 mice in an orthotopic lung cancer model, but did not have the same effect in immunodeficient nude mice, indicating that its antitumour properties of TD are exerted by regulating immunity. TD induced G-MDSC apoptosis via the IL-1ß-mediated NF-κB signalling cascade leading to effectively weaken the immunosuppressive activity of G-MDSCs and promote CD8+ T-cell infiltration, which was supported by both the depletion and adoptive transfer of G-MDSCs assays. In addition, TD also showed minimal cytotoxicity both in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSION: This study reveals for the first time that TD, a classic TCM prescription, is able to regulate G-MDSC activity and trigger its apoptosis via the IL-1ß-mediated NF-κB signalling pathway, reshaping the tumour microenvironment and demonstrating antitumour effects. These findings provide a scientific foundation the clinical treatment of lung cancer with TD.

The harvesting period is a critical period for the accumulation of flavonoids in the leaves of the important medicinal plant Epimedium sagittatum. In this study, we conducted an experiment on E. sagittatum leaves sprayed with mineral elements with the aim of improving the quality of the herbal leafage during the harvesting period. We elucidated the changes in flavonoids (icariin, epimedin A, epimedin B, and epimedin C) in E. sagittatum leaves. The sum of main flavonoids content reached a maximum (11.74%) at 20 days after the high-concentration Fe2+ (2500 mg·L-1) treatment. We analyzed the FT-IR spectra characteristics of E. sagittatum leaf samples using the FT-IR technique, and constructed an OPLS-DA model and identified characteristic peaks to achieve differentiated identification of E. sagittatum. Further, widely untargeted metabolomic analysis identified different classes of metabolites. As the most important characteristic flavonoids, the relative contents of icariin, icaritin, icariside I, and icariside II were found to be up-regulated by high-Fe2+ treatment. Our experimental results demonstrate that high-concentration Fe2+ treatment is an effective measure to increase the flavonoids content in E. sagittatum leaves during the harvesting period, which can provide a scientific basis for the improvement of E. sagittatum leaf cultivation agronomic measures.

Plants program their meristem-associated developmental switches for timely adaptation to a changing environment. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers differentiate from specialized belowground branches or stolons through radial expansion of their terminal ends. During this process, the stolon apex and closest axillary buds enter a dormancy state that leads to tuber eyes, which are reactivated the following spring and generate a clonally identical plant. The potato FLOWERING LOCUS T homolog SELF-PRUNING 6A (StSP6A) was previously identified as the major tuber-inducing signal that integrates day-length cues to control the storage switch. However, whether some other long-range signals also act as tuber organogenesis stimuli remains unknown. Here, we show that the florigen SELF PRUNING 3D (StSP3D) and FLOWERING LOCUS T-like 1 (StFTL1) genes are activated by short days, analogously to StSP6A. Overexpression of StSP3D or StFTL1 promotes tuber formation under non-inductive long days, and the tuber-inducing activity of these proteins is graft transmissible. Using the non-tuber-bearing wild species Solanum etuberosum, a natural SP6A null mutant, we show that leaf-expressed SP6A is dispensable for StSP3D long-range activity. StSP3D and StFTL1 mediate secondary activation of StSP6A in stolon tips, leading to amplification of this tuberigen signal. StSP3D and StFTL1 were observed to bind the same protein partners as StSP6A, suggesting that they can also form transcriptionally active complexes. Together, our findings show that additional mobile tuber-inducing signals are regulated by the photoperiodic pathway.

A booming demand for wearable electronic devices urges the development of multifunctional smart fabrics. However, it is still facing a challenge to fabricate multifunctional smart fabrics with satisfactory mechanical property, excellent Joule heating performance, highly efficient photothermal conversion, outstanding electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, and superior anti-bacterial capability. Here, a MoSe2 @MXene heterostructure-based multifunctional cellulose fabric is fabricated by depositing MXene nanosheets onto cellulose fabric followed by a facile hydrothermal method to grow MoSe2 nanoflakes on MXene layers. A low-voltage Joule heating therapy platform with rapid Joule heating response (up to 230 °C in 25 s at a supplied voltage of 4 V) and stable performance under repeated bending cycles (up to 1000 cycles) is realized. Besides, the multifunctional fabric also exhibits excellent photothermal performance (up to 130 °C upon irradiation for 25 s with a light intensity of 400 mW cm-2 ), outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (37 dB), and excellent antibacterial performances (>90% anti-bacterial rate toward Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus). This work offers an efficient avenue to fabricate multifunctional wearable thermal therapy devices for mobile healthcare and personal thermal management.

This experiment aimed to explore the interaction of ß-1,3-glucan and Clostridium perfringens on the growth performance, intestinal health and cecal microflora of broilers. A total of 384 one-day-old Arbor Acre broilers were sorted into 4 treatments with 6 replications. There were 2 factors in this trial: dietary ß-1,3-glucan addition including 0 and 250 mg/kg, intestinal enteritis challenged with Clostridium perfringens attack or not. Results showed that Clostridium perfringens infection disrupted the integrity of the intestinal mucosa by reducing the jejunal Occludin and Claudin-1 mRNA expression of broiler chickens at 21 d of age (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, when considering Clostridium perfringens as the main effect, it also decreased the mRNA expression of the glucose transporter recombinant sodium/glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) at d 21 and the fatty acid transporter liver fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) at d 42 (P < 0.05) as well as affect cecum microbial diversity, especially in relative abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. In addition, Clostridium perfringens infection reduced body weight, daily weight gain, and feed-gain ratio (FCR) in broilers at d 42 (P < 0.05). The dietary ß-1,3-glucan could alleviate intestinal mucosal damage caused by the Clostridium perfringens to some extent. When considering ß-1,3-glucan as the main effect, it increased the SGLT1 at 42 d of age (P < 0.05), and stabilized gut microbiota disorder caused by Clostridium perfringens. More over dietary ß-1,3-glucan addition increased body weight at 42-day-old (P < 0.05), and improved daily weight gain and FCR during 1 to 42 d (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary ß-1,3-glucan could improve growth performance and intestinal health in broilers infected with Clostridium perfringens.

@#[Objective] To construct a Nomogram model for the prediction of essential hypertension (EH) risks with the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome elements principles in conjunction with cutting-edge biochemical detection technologies. [Methods] A case-control study was conducted, involving 301 patients with essential hypertension in the hypertensive group and 314 without in the control group. Comprehensive data, including the information on the four TCM diagnoses, general data, and blood biochemical indicators of participants in both groups, were collected separately for analysis. The differentiation principles of syndrome elements were used to discern the location and nature of hypertension. One-way analysis was carried out to screen for potential risk factors of the disease. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to identify factors that contribute significantly to the model, and eliminate possible collinearity problems. At last, multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to both screen and quantify independent risk factors essential for the prediction model. The “rms” package in the R Studio was used to construct the Nomogram model, creating line segments of varying lengths based on the contribution of each risk factor to aid in the prediction of risks of hypertension. For internal model validation, the Bootstrap program package was utilized to perform 1000 repetitions of sampling and generate calibration curves. [Results] The results of the multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk factors of EH included age, heart rate (HR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), uric acid (UA) levels, family medical history, sleep patterns (early awakening and light sleep), water intake, and psychological traits (depression and anger). Additionally, TCM syndrome elements such as phlegm, Yin deficiency, and Yang hyperactivity contributed to the risk of EH onset as well. TCM syndrome elements liver, spleen, and kidney were also considered the risk factors of EH. Next, the Nomogram model was constructed using the aforementioned 14 risk predictors, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.868 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) ranging from 0.840 to 0.895. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity were found to be 80.7% and 85.0%, respectively. Internal validation confirmed the model’s robust predictive performance, with aconsistency index (C-index) of 0.879, underscoring the model’s strong predictive ability. [Conclusion] By integrating TCM syndrome elements, the Nomogram model has realized the objective, qualitative, and quantitative selection of early warning factors for developing EH, resulting in the creation of a more comprehensive and precise prediction model for EH risks.

Background: Existing research indicates that job satisfaction has effects on job performance, but little evidence exists about the mechanism through which the satisfaction-performance association operates. This study aims to examine the effect of job satisfaction on job performance in a district-level health care system of China and to explore the effect mechanism mediated by organizational commitment and burnout. Methods: Cluster sampling was used in this study. All healthcare professionals in the Nanshan Medical Group, who were at work in the last 3 months and able to complete online questionnaire independently were invited to participate the anonymous online survey. Job satisfaction, organizational commitment, burnout and job performance were measured by tools, which have been validated in China. Descriptive statistics were used for the socio-demographic variables and the four job psychological variables. Pearson correlation coefficients was used to determine associations among each of the psychological variables. Linear regression was used to examine association between job performance and other three psychological variables. PROCESS macro was used to examine the mediation effects of organizational commitment and burnout on the association between job satisfaction and performance. Results: In total, 1,200 healthcare professionals completed the anonymous online survey. Job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job performance were positively correlated with one another, with burnout negatively correlated with them. Linear regression revealed that demographic characteristics, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and burnout explained 5, 6, 2, and 9% of the variance in job performance. Path analysis showed that the coefficient of the direct effect of job satisfaction on job performance was 0.18, the coefficients of the indirect effects of job satisfaction on job performance through organizational commitment and burnout were 0.17 and 0.37, respectively. The coefficients of the indirect effects of organizational commitment on job performance through burnout was -0.04, but it was not significant. Conclusion: It is promising to improve job performance of providers in Chinese healthcare systems by improving job satisfaction and reducing burnout. Tailored support policies for female healthcare professionals, appropriate incentive mechanisms and improving multidisciplinary healthcare delivery are potential to improve job performance of healthcare professionals in integrated healthcare systems.

Islands are characterized by a lack of land and freshwater resources, public finances, and technical personnel. As a result, domestic sewage may not be effectively treated, which can lead to major pollution on islands and in the surrounding sea areas. In this study, a pilot treatment of domestic sewage was conducted using an ecological treatment process (i.e., a constructed wetland and ecological pond) in an abandoned pond located on Haimen Island, Fujian Province, China. The pollutant indicators were monitored to analyze this treatment method at different treatment stages. The results showed that the combination of multiple ecological treatment processes had favorable treatment effects on various pollutants in the sewage. The treatment rates of the chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) and suspended solids (SS) surpassed 88%. The treatment rate of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and fecal coliform surpassed 93%, and all the indicators met or were close to the level I B emission standards for urban sewage treatment plants. Different treatment stages have different treatment effects on different pollutants. The constructed wetland played an important role in sewage treatment through plant absorption, substrate adsorption, sedimentation, and microbial decomposition, particularly for the TP, CODCr, and BOD5. In contrast, algal photosynthesis in the ecological pond produced a large amount of dissolved oxygen, and the treatment effect was highest for the TN and NH3-N. The treatment effects on the fecal coliform in the constructed wetland and ecological pond were very significant. Ecological treatment processes based on the combination of a constructed wetland and ecological pond have favorable treatment effects, low construction and maintenance costs, and pollution-free conditions, which are suitable for application in island areas.

Chrysanthemum morifolium is a well-known edible medicinal plant in Asia and some other regions. Content of selenium in Se-enriched C. morifolium (SeCM) is significantly higher than that in traditional C. morifolium (non-Se-enriched C. morifolium, TCM). In order to understand health effects of SeCM, its chemical composition, lifespan-prolonging activities, and impacts on antioxidant defense-related gene expressions of model organism D. melanogaster were systematically studied. A total of eight phenols, including luteolin-7-O-glucoside, linarin, luteolin, apigenin, diosmetin, acacetin, 3-caffeoylquinic acid and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, were identified in SeCM extract. Compared with TCM, SeCM exhibited superior antioxidant properties. Intake of SeCM dramatically reduced malondialdehyde level and increased activities of endogenous antioxidant enzymes in fruit flies. SeCM was able to upregulate gene expressions of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase, Mn-superoxide dismutase and hydrogen peroxide catalase, and extend lifespans of fruit flies. Comparatively high antioxidant capacities and lifespan-prolonging activities of SeCM might be attributed to its abundant phenols and selenium, which probably ameliorated accumulation of free radicals and susceptibility to oxidative stress. These findings provide clues on further exploitation and utilization of Se-enriched C. morifolium. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Chrysanthemum morifolium has been used for nutraceutical and curative purposes in China for thousands of years. Se-enriched C. morifolium typically contains more selenium than traditional C. morifolium, and is widely consumed in Asia and some other regions. Selenium is an essential micronutrient for humans, and selenium deficiency may result in several diseases such as myocardial infarction. SeCM is one of important selenium supplements. In this study, SeCM was found to upregulate gene expressions of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase, Mn-superoxide dismutase, and hydrogen peroxide catalase, and extend lifespans of experimental animals. These results provide supporting information for developing SeCM-based functional foods with distinct health benefits.

The aim of this retrospective study was to understand the impact of anesthesia management for the patients under cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy surgery (CRS+HIPEC). The perioperative electronic medical records of 833 CRS+HIPEC surgical cases from two hospitals were analyzed to study the characteristics of shortterm patient outcomes in hospitals for CRS+HIPEC. Older age, higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, male gender, longer anesthesia time, higher Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI), and higher intraoperative blood loss predict the prolonged hospital stay for patients. Older age, higher ASA score, longer anesthesia time, higher PCI, higher intraoperative fluid administration, lower intraoperative propofol dosage, higher intraoperative blood loss, and failed extubation predict the prolonged intensive care unit stay. Older age, male gender, longer anesthesia time, higher ASA score, higher PCI, higher intraoperative opioid dosage, and higher intraoperative blood loss predict the higher degree postoperative complications. We also observed that implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery protocols may improve patient outcomes for CRS+HIPEC. These results need further confirmation from future prospective randomized studies.
