RESUMO

This study aims to investigate the impact of dietary supplementation with selenium yeast (SeY) and glycerol monolaurate (GML) on the transfer of antioxidative capacity between the mother and fetus during pregnancy and its underlying mechanisms. A total of 160 sows with similar body weight and parity of 3-6 parity sows were randomly and uniformly allocated to four groups (n = 40) as follows: CON group, SeY group, GML group, and SG (SeY + GML) group. Animal feeding started from the 85th day of gestation and continued to the day of delivery. The supplementation of SeY and GML resulted in increased placental weight and reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels in sow plasma, placental tissues, and piglet plasma. Furthermore, the redox balance and inflammatory markers exhibited significant improvements in the plasma of sows fed with either SeY or GML, as well as in their offspring. Moreover, the addition of SeY and GML activated the Nrf2 signaling pathway, while downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory genes and proteins associated with inflammatory pathways (MAPK and NF-κB). Vascular angiogenesis and nutrient transportation (amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose) were upregulated, whereas apoptosis signaling pathways within the placenta were downregulated with the supplementation of SeY and GML. The integrity of the intestinal and placental barriers significantly improved, as indicated by the increased expression of ZO-1, occludin, and claudin-1, along with reduced levels of DLA and DAO with dietary treatment. Moreover, supplementation of SeY and GML increased the abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, Clostridium_sensus_stricto_1, and Bacteroidota, while decreasing levels of gut microbiota metabolites LPS and trimethylamine N-oxide. Correlation analysis demonstrated a significant negative relationship between plasma LPS levels and placental weight, oxidative stress, and inflammation. In summary, dietary supplementation of SeY and GML enhanced the transfer of antioxidative capacity between maternal-fetal during pregnancy via gut-placenta axis through modulating sow microbiota composition.

Eleutherine bulbosa (Mill.) Urb. is a medicinal and edible plant with various benefits for humans and animals. In this work, four new phenolic constituents (1-4), along with six known phenolic compounds (5-10) were obtained from the red bulbs of E. bulbosa. Their structures with absolute configurations were characterized by extensive spectroscopic analysis, combined with HR-ESI-MS and quantum mechanical electronic circular dichroism (ECD). Compounds 1 and 2 are novel homologous and heterodimers, respectively, featuring an unusual spiro ring system. All isolated phenolic constituents were tested for their antibacterial effects. The results revealed four phenolic compounds 1-3 and 7 showed moderate antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 15.6 to 250.0 µg/mL.

In the field of carbon nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) have become a preferable choice in biomedical applications. Based on the concept of green chemistry, CDs derived from traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have attracted extensive attention, including TCM charcoal drugs, TCM extracts, and TCM small molecules. The design and preparation of CDs from TCMs (TCMs-CDs) can improve the inherent characteristics of TCMs, such as solubility, particle size distribution, and so on. Compared with other precursor materials, TCMs-CDs have outstanding intrinsic bioactivities and potential pharmacological effects. However, the research of TCMs-CDs in biomedicine is not comprehensive, and their mechanisms have not been understood deeply either. In this review, we will provide concise insights into the recent development of TCMs-CDs, with a major focus on their preparation, formation, precursors, and bioactivities. Then we will discuss the perfect transformation from TCMs to TCMs-CDs. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges for the application of TCMs-CDs in clinical treatment.

Selenium (Se) is the essential component of selenoenzymes and contributes to antioxidant defenses. The capability of Se to antagonize the toxicity of heavy metals makes it an essential trace element for human and plant health. Soils derived from black shales are naturally enriched with Se; however, these soils often contain high geological cadmium (Cd), due to the weathering of black shales rich in Cd and Se. Cadmium, as a known Group I carcinogen, could induce damage to various organs. This therefore poses a major challenge for safe cultivation of Se-rich land resources. In this study, a total of 247 paired soil-crop samples were collected from a typical farmland derived from black shales. The concentrations of Cd and Se in the samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy and atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Monte Carlo simulation was applied to evaluate potential health risks associated with Cd exposure. Cadmium was the critical pollutant in the study area, with the average value of 1.53 mg/kg. Moreover, both children and adults living in the area had a significant non-carcinogenic health risk. Additional health risk assessments revealed that diet was the main contributor for both children and adults among the four pathways (diet > soil ingestion > soil dermal adsorption > soil inhalation). Furthermore, our results revealed that leguminous vegetables and maize were ideal for this site due to their high Se and low Cd accumulation abilities. These findings provide support for adjusting planting structure by variety screening to mitigate the health risk induced by Cd.

Since foods are not ingested individually, co-digestion, in accordance with human daily diet conditions, should be stressed when assessing elements bioaccessibility and associated health risks. The oral bioaccessibility of cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se) in 11 types of crops (rice, maize, pakchoi, eggplant, red pepper, towel gourd, kidney bean, soybean, cowpea, sweet potato, and taro) were determined, and the effects of co-digestion of 7 types of rice and vegetables on the bioaccessibility of Cd and Se were evaluated and validated with in vitro PBET method. The underlying mechanism was revealed by observing the surface morphological characteristics of digested substrates, and the exposure risk of Cd and Se were assessed. The results showed that the average bioaccessibility of Cd and Se in 11 types of crops varied from 58.7 % to 39.1 % and 48.4 % to 62.6 % from the gastric phase (GP) to the intestinal phase (IP). Interestingly, co-digestion of rice and vegetables reduced the bioaccessibility of Cd and Se to varying degrees compared to theoretical values. Great reduction in the bioaccessibility of Cd and Se in the GP (16.9-36.4 % and 9.9-23.2 %) than that in the IP (0.2-6.62 % and 0.23-12.3 %) were detected, which was attributed to the rice-vegetable aggregates formed during co-digestion. Rice-vegetable aggregates inhibited the release of Cd and Se, which was more pronounced in the GP than in the IP. Consequently, co-digestion of rice and vegetables reduced the oral exposure to Cd by 35.8 % and to Se by 19.6 %. The areas with higher non-carcinogenic risk of Cd and Se in the study region were reduced by 17 % and 10 %, respectively. Therefore, the role of co-digestion in assessing Cd and Se bioaccessibility and associated health risk cannot be neglected. This study has significant implications for investigating elements bioaccessibility and optimizing associated health risk assessment from a novel perspective.

Immunogenic cell death (ICD) has been a revolutionary modality in cancer treatment since it kills primary tumors and prevents recurrent malignancy simultaneously. ICD represents a particular form of cancer cell death accompanied by production of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that can be recognized by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), which enhances infiltration of effector T cells and potentiates antitumor immune responses. Various treatment methods can elicit ICD involving chemo- and radio-therapy, phototherapy and nanotechnology to efficiently convert dead cancer cells into vaccines and trigger the antigen-specific immune responses. Nevertheless, the efficacy of ICD-induced therapies is restrained due to low accumulation in the tumor sites and damage of normal tissues. Thus, researchers have been devoted to overcoming these problems with novel materials and strategies. In this review, current knowledge on different ICD modalities, various ICD inducers, development and application of novel ICD-inducing strategies are summarized. Moreover, the prospects and challenges are briefly outlined to provide reference for future design of novel immunotherapy based on ICD effect.

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (n-alkanes), semi-volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals pose major ecological risks at petrochemical-contaminated sites. The efficiency of natural remediation in situ is often unsatisfactory, particularly under heavy metal pollution stress. This study aimed to verify the hypothesis that after long-term contamination and restoration, microbial communities in situ exhibit significantly different biodegradation efficiencies under different concentrations of heavy metals. Moreover, they determine the appropriate microbial community to restore the contaminated soil. Therefore, we investigated the heavy metals in petroleum-contaminated soils and observed that heavy metals effects on distinct ecological clusters varied significantly. Finally, alterations in the native microbial community degradation ability were demonstrated through the occurrence of petroleum pollutant degradation function genes in different communities at the tested sites. Furthermore, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to explain the influence of all factors on the degradation function of petroleum pollution. These results suggest that heavy metal contamination from petroleum-contaminated sites reduces the efficiency of natural remediation. In addition, it infers that MOD1 microorganisms have greater degradation potential under heavy metal stress. Utilizing appropriate microorganisms in situ may effectively help resist the stress of heavy metals and continuously degrade petroleum pollutants.

Environmental exposures during early life are important for animals' intestinal microbiota composition and their production performance. This experiment investigated the growth performance, hematology parameters, jejunal morphology, and cecal microbiota of broiler chicks as affected by exogenous factors from the aspects of drinking water quality and dietary manipulation. A total of 480-day-old broiler chicks (Arbor acre; 41.59 ± 0.88 g) were randomly assigned into 4 groups (CON, HWGM, CA, CAHWGM). Each group had 6 replicates with 20 birds per replicate. Broiler chicks in CON group were fed with basal diet and drank normal drinking water; in HWGM group were fed with basal diet supplemented with 1.5g/kg herbal extract blend (hops, grape seed, and wheat germ) and drank normal drinking water; in CA group were fed with basal diet and drank sodium dichlorocyanurate (50 mg/L) treated-drinking water; in CAHWGM group were fed with basal diet supplemented with 1.5 g/kg herbal extract blend and drank chlorinated drinking water. The experimental period was 42 d. We found that broiler chicks drank chlorinated drinking water led to an increase in body weight gain and feed efficiency during d 22 to 42 and 1 to 42, as well as a decrease in cecal Dysgonomonas and Providencia abundance. Dietary supplementation of herbal extract blend increased cecal Lactobacillus and Enterococcus abundance, whereas decreased Dysgonomonas abundance. Moreover, we observed that cecal Dysgonomonas abundance synergistically decreased by treating drinking water with sodium dichlorocyanurate and supplementing herbal extract blend to the diet. Therefore, results obtained in this study indicated that providing chlorinated drinking water is an effective strategy to improve the growth performance of broiler chicks by regulating intestinal microbiota. Additionally, dietary supplementation of herbal extract blend alone or combined with chlorinated drinking water is able to regulate cecal microbiota.

The study was the first time to explore the positive effects of α-LA on growth performance, antioxidant capability, immunity, and disease resistance of northern snakehead (Channa argus). Five hundred and forty northern snakehead fish (initial body weight: 8.74 ± 0.12 g (mean ± SE)) were randomly allocated into six groups with three replicates each. Six diets supplemented with α-LA at doses of 0 (CON), 300 (LA300), 600 (LA600), 900 (LA900), 1200 (LA1200), and 1500 (LA1500) mg/kg were fed to northern snakehead for 8 weeks. The results demonstrated that, when compared with the control group, optimal dietary α-LA increased the weight gain (WG), protein efficiency ratio (PER), and specific growth rate (SGR) and reduced the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of the fish (P < 0.05). Also, optimal dietary α-LA enhanced the immune-related parameters and antioxidant enzyme parameters levels in the head kidney, spleen, and liver of northern snakehead (P < 0.05). Dietary α-LA upregulated the mRNA expression levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines (il10 and tgfß) and antioxidant related genes (gst, gsh-px, gr and Cu/Zn sod), down-regulated the pro-inflammatory cytokines (il1ß, il8, il12 and tnfα) mRNA levels in the liver, spleen and head kidney of the northern snakehead (P < 0.05). The above results demonstrated that optimal dietary α-LA showed enhancement effects on the growth, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capability, and immune response of northern snakehead. The survival rates in all α-LA treatments were significantly raised after the challenge with Aeromonas veronii (P < 0.05). Based on the quadratic regression analysis of WG, GSH-Px, LYS, and il1ß, the optimal dietary α-LA levels were estimated to be 737.0, 775.0, 890.0, and 916.7 mg/kg, respectively. Considering the overall responses in growth performance, antioxidant status, immune response, and inflammatory factors, the recommended dose of α-LA in the diet of fish is 737.0-916.7 mg/kg.

Sono-photodynamic sterilization technology (SPDT) has become a promising non-thermal food sterilization technique because of its high penetrating power and outstanding microbicidal effects. In this study, Listeria monocytogenes (LMO) was effectively inactivated using curcumin as the sono-photosensitizer activated by ultrasound and blue LED light. The SPDT treatment at optimized conditions yielded a 4-log reduction in LMO CFU. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in LMO upon SPDT treatment was subsequently investigated. The results demonstrated SPDT treatment-induced excessive ROS generation led to bacterial cell deformation and membrane rupture, as revealed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and cytoplasmic material leakage. Moreover, agarose gel electrophoresis and SDS-PAGE further revealed that SPDT also triggered bacterial genomic DNA cleavage and protein degradation in LMO, thus inducing bacterial apoptosis-like events, such as membrane depolarization.

For the purpose of developing multifunctional water purification materials capable of degrading organic pollutants while simultaneously inactivating microorganisms from contaminated wastewater streams, we report here a facile and eco-friendly method to immobilize molybdenum disulfide into bacterial cellulose via a one-step in-situ biosynthetic method. The resultant nanocomposite, termed BC/MoS2, was shown to possess a photocatalytic activity capable of generating •OH from H2O2, while also exhibiting photodynamic/photothermal mechanisms, the combination of which exhibits synergistic activity for the degradation of pollutants as well as for bacterial inactivation. In the presence of H2O2, the BC/MoS2 nanocomposite exhibited excellent antibacterial efficacy upwards of 99.9999% (6 log units) for the photoinactivation of both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus upon infrared (IR) lamp illumination (100 W, 760 nm ≤ λ ≤ 5000 nm, 15 cm vertical distance; 5 min). Mechanistic studies revealed synergistic pathogen inactivation resulting from the combination of photocatalytically generated •OH and hyperthermia induced by the photothermal conversion of the near-IR light. In addition, the BC/MoS2 nanocomposite also showed excellent photodegradation activity for common aqueous contaminants in the presence of H2O2, including malachite green (a textile dye), catechol violet (a phenol) and formaldehyde. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that sustainable materials such as BC/MoS2 have potential applications in wastewater treatment and microorganism disinfection.

ABSTRACT: Rosacea is a facial chronic inflammatory skin disease with immune and vascular system dysfunction. Paeoniflorin (PF) is a traditional Chinese medicine with anti-inflammatory properties. However, its effects on rosacea remain unknown. Here, we investigated the mechanisms through which PF inhibits the macrophage-related rosacea-like inflammatory response. Immunohistochemical methods were used to detect differences in the inflammatory response and degree of macrophage infiltration in granulomatous rosacea lesions and their peripheral areas. Cell Counting Kit-8 was used to determine the cytotoxicity of PF towards RAW 264.7 cells. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting were used to measure the influence of PF on mRNA and protein expression levels of suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3), apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1)-p38, Toll-like receptor 2, and cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide ( or LL37) in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced macrophage-related rosacea-like inflammatory response of RAW 264.7 cells. Inflammatory cell infiltration was more pronounced in granulomatous rosacea lesions than in peripheral areas. LL37 expression increased significantly, and the infiltration of a large number of CD68+ macrophages was observed in the lesions. PF promoted SOCS3 expression in RAW 264.7 cells and inhibited the LPS-induced increase in toll-like receptor 2 and LL37 expression through the ASK1-p38 cascade, thereby alleviating the macrophage-related rosacea-like inflammatory response. These changes could be abrogated by SOCS3 siRNA in vitro.In conclusion, the pathogenesis of rosacea involves abnormal macrophage infiltration within the lesions. PF inhibits the macrophage-related rosacea-like inflammatory response through the SOCS3-ASK1-p38 pathway, demonstrating its potential application as a novel drug for rosacea therapy.

Akebia trifoliata (Lardizabalaceae) is an important medicinal plant with multiple pharmacological effects. However, the lack of genomic information had limited the further excavation and utilization of this plant. An initial survey of the genome A. trifoliata was performed by next-generation sequencing, and then the genome size was inferred by flow cytometry. The whole genome survey of A. trifoliata generated 61.90 Gb of sequence data with approximately 95.51 × coverage. The genome size, heterozygosity and GC content obtained by k-mer analysis were almost 648.07 Mb, 0.72% and 36.11%, respectively. The genome size calculated by flow cytometry was 685.77 Mb, which was consistent with the results of genome survey. A total of 851,957 simple sequence repeats (SSR) were identified in the A. trifoliata genome. Twenty-eight phenotypic traits and thirty pairs of SSR primers were selected for the analysis of the genetic diversity of 43 accessions of cultivated A. trifoliata. The results showed that 216 bands were generated by 30 pairs of SSR primers, of which 189 (87.5%) were polymorphic. In addition, the phenotypes and SSR markers were used for cluster analysis of 43 cultivated accessions. The results of the two clustering methods were partially consistent. The genome survey of A. trifoliata demonstrated that the genome size of this plant was about 648.07 Mb. In the present study, the size and characteristics of the genome of A. trifoliata were reported for the first time, which greatly enriched the genomic resources of A. trifoliata for the further research and utilization.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) plays a main role in pancreatic [Formula: see text]-cell dysfunction and death because of intracellular Ca[Formula: see text] turbulence and inflammation activation. Although several drugs are targeting pancreatic [Formula: see text]-cell to improve [Formula: see text]-cell function, there still lacks agents to alleviate [Formula: see text]-cell ER stress conditions. Therefore we used thapsigargin (THAP) or high glucose (HG) to induce ER stress in [Formula: see text]-cell and aimed to screen natural molecules against ER stress-induced [Formula: see text]-cell dysfunction. Through screening the Traditional Chinese drug library ([Formula: see text] molecules), luteolin was finally discovered to improve [Formula: see text]-cell function. Cellular viability results indicated luteolin reduced the THAP or HG-induced [Formula: see text]-cell death and apoptosis through MTT and flow cytometry assay. Moreover, luteolin improved [Formula: see text]-cell insulin secretion ability under ER stress conditions. Also ER stress-induced intracellular Ca[Formula: see text] turbulence and inflammation activation were inhibited by luteolin treatment. Mechanically, luteolin inhibited HNF4[Formula: see text] signaling, which was induced by ER stress. Moreover, luteolin reduced the transcriptional level of HNF4[Formula: see text] downstream gene, such as Asnk4b and HNF1[Formula: see text]. Conversely HNF4[Formula: see text] knockdown abolished the effect of luteolin on [Formula: see text]-cell using siRNA. These results suggested the protective effect of luteolin on [Formula: see text]-cell was through HNF4[Formula: see text]/Asnk4b pathway. In conclusion, our study discovered that luteolin improved [Formula: see text]-cell function and disclosed the underlying mechanism of luteolin on [Formula: see text]-cell, suggesting luteolin is a promising agent against pancreatic dysfunction.

Metabolomics methods can be used to explore the effect mechanisms underlying treatments with traditional medicine. Lung cancer (LC) causes the highest morbidity and mortality among tumors disease, and has become a serious public health problem. Chuanxiong (CX) is a dried rhizome of Ligusticum Chuanxiong Hort., often used in traditional Chinese medicine and has been widely used in the treatment for tumors. However, the pharmacological effect of CX on the metabolism process of LC mice is still unclear. This study used high-throughput untargeted metabolomics aims to discover biomarkers and metabolic pathways of LC as a potential target to provide insight into the pharmacological action and effective mechanism of CX against LC. The precise structural identification of the LC biomarker has been established using ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) combined with quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (Q-TOF-MS) technology. UPLC-Q-TOF-MS and chemometrics methods were used to analyze the blood metabolism of LC model mice, and revealed the intervention effect of CX on LC model mice and potential therapeutic targets. The results showed that the metabolic profile clustering among the groups was obvious, and 31 potential biomarkers were finally locked, involving 7 related metabolic pathways. After treatment with CX, we found that 22 kinds of biomarkers were recalled to the main metabolic pathway which are associated with lipid metabolism. This study provides an effective biomarker reference for early clinical diagnosis of LC, and also provides a foundation for the expansion of new drugs for CX treatment of LC.

CONTEXT: TangGanJian (TGJ) has a curative effect in the clinical treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), while the mechanism involved in the treatment process remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study details the mechanism of TGJ on the treatment of NAFLD with T2DM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: NAFLD was induced in T2DM rat model. Male Wistar rats were assigned into six groups: Group I (control), Group II (model), Group III (pioglitazone, 0.5 mg/kg), Group IV (high dose of TGJ, 24.8 g/kg), Group V (middle dose of TGJ, 12.4 g/kg) and Group VI (low dose of TGJ, 6.2 g/kg). All rats in each group were treated with the corresponding drugs by gavage for 8 weeks. Haematoxylin and eosin analysis was conducted. The indicators of inflammatory and oxidative stress were analysed utilizing one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: The contents of TNF-α (15.794 ± 3.302 pg/mL), IL-6 (76.801 ± 8.491 pg/mL), IL-1ß (100.101 ± 13.150 pg/mL), CRP (1.052 ± 0.079 pg/mL) and MDA (3.972 ± 0.159 pg/mL) were obviously elevated in NAFLD with T2DM rats compared to controls. Except for the IL-6, the levels of other markers declined in a dose-dependent manner after treatment with TGJ. The SOD (14.139 ± 1.479 U/mgprot) and GSH-PX (81.511 ± 5.276 U/mgprot) levels significantly decreased in NAFLD with T2DM rats, while the levels of these indicators increased after treatment with TGJ. CONCLUSIONS: TGJ may be a therapy for the NAFLD with T2DM rats by modulating the inflammatory response and the oxidative stress capacity.

OBJECTIVES: Laser photocoagulation surgery is a routine treatment for threshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). However, little is known about which anaesthesia protocols provide efficient pain control while minimising exposure risk to vulnerable infants. In this study, therefore, we assessed the efficacy and tolerability of multiple anaesthesia techniques used on premature infants during laser therapy. DESIGN AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Anaesthesia modalities consisted of topical eye drops anaesthesia, general anaesthesia and intravenous fentanyl sedation with mechanical ventilation. Laser treatment efficacy and detailed operative information were retrospectively and consecutively analysed. Cardiorespiratory stability was assessed and compared. The Neonatal Pain Agitation and Sedation Scale (N-PASS) was used to evaluate tolerability in infants that underwent intravenous fentanyl sedation. RESULTS: 97 cases of prematurity were included in this study. In 94/97 (96.9%) cases, vascular proliferation regressed. In the topical anaesthesia groups, the ophthalmologist needed 12-16 min more to complete the treatment. During the 3 postoperative days, topical anaesthesia demonstrated the greatest instability; 4/31 (12.90%) infants in this group suffered from life threatening events requiring resuscitation. The only instability observed in general anaesthesia and fentanyl sedation was attributed to difficulty in extubating within 24 hours after surgery. During laser therapy, the N-PASS score increased to 1.8 in the fentanyl sedation group. CONCLUSIONS: Topical anaesthesia was associated with more cardiorespiratory instability during ROP laser treatment. While general anaesthesia and fentanyl sedation had similar postoperative cardiorespiratory results, the latter demonstrated acceptable pain stress control. However, the difficulty of weaning off mechanical ventilation in some cases after surgery needs to be addressed in future studies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical efficacy, toxicity, and survival outcomes of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by radical surgery (RS) among patients with cervical cancer stage IB2-IIB. METHODS: In a retrospective clinical study at West China Second Hospital, Chengdu, data were analyzed from 414 patients who underwent NACT followed by radical surgery (NACT-RS) or RS alone between January 2008 and November 2009. RESULTS: The clinical response for NACT was 90%. Lymph node metastasis (25% versus 48%, P<0.05) and deep cervical stromal invasion more than 0.5, (68% versus 91%, P<0.05) were significantly lower among responders than among non-responders, respectively, in the NACT-RS group. The 2-year progression-free survival and 2-year overall survival were 93.0% and 95.5% in the NACT-RS group, and 94.5% and 97.1% in the RS group (P>0.05). Parametric infiltration (hazard ratio [HR], 7.668; P<0.05) and lymph node metastasis (HR, 7.714; P<0.05) were independent risk factors for all study patients. CONCLUSION: Compared with RS, NACT-RS did not show a significant advantage for patients with locally advanced cervical cancer. However, the data provide the rationale for assessing NACT-RS in a multicenter randomized clinical trial setting. NACT may be considered as an alternative treatment when radiotherapy is not available.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of Tamoxifen in conjunction with a cell apoptosis contributor--Rhizoma curcumae oil on the rat endometriosis models. METHODS: The rat endometriosis models were established and were randomly assigned into the control group, Tamoxifen group, Alarelin (GnRHa) group, and the group of Tamoxifen (by gastrogavage) plus Rhizoma curcumae oil (by intraperitoneal injection). After 4 weeks of treatment, the growth of ectopic endometrial implants was observed; then eutopic and ectopic endometria were excised in preparation for HE staining and streptavedin-peroxi-dase immunohisto chemical analysis. RESULTS: After treatment, the volume of the ectopic implants of each treatment group was markedly smaller than that of control and before treatment (P < 0.05); the score of VEGF showed significant difference when each treatment group was compared with control (P < 0.05). The score of VEGF exhibited marked difference between Tamoxifen group and Alarelin (GnRHa) group, between Tamoxifen group and Tamoxifen plus Rhizoma curcumae oil group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Tamoxifen in conjunction with Rhizoma curcumae oil could decrease markedly the volume and VEGF expression of ectopic implants.
