RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The purpose of this case is to present a useful phototherapy for rapid healing of recalcitrant postoperative wound disunion due to implantation of allogeneic bone and metal. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, a middle-aged man was diagnosed as complex fracture of the left tibial plateau which caused movement loss, swelling and pain of the left knee. The patient's wound disunion was still present after been surgery for 26 days, with yellowish liquid persistently oozing out of the wound after several wound dressing. We treated the postoperative wound with ultraviolet light C (UVC) to promote wound healing. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Incision disunion is a common complication of surgery, which increases patients' hospital days. Prevention and treatment of wound disunion is one of the key considerations for perioperative management. CONCLUSION: During 3-day consecutive UVC treatment, the yellowish wound exudate gradually reduced and disappeared. Subsequently, the non-healing postoperative wound scared over and healed rapidly. As a convenient, non-invasive, non-polluting and effectively physical therapy, UVC can promote rapid healing of recalcitrant wound disunion caused by implants in complex tibial plateau fracture.

RESUMO

Introduction: The quality of Chinese herbs is the basis for ensuring their safety and efficacy. However, the quality evaluation system is imperfect. In particular, there is a lack of quality evaluation methods for fresh Chinese herbs during growth. The biophoton is a common phenomenon and provides complete information about the interior of the living system, which is consistent with the holistic concept of traditional Chinese medicine. Therefore, we aim to correlate the biophoton characteristics with the quality states to find the biophoton parameters that can characterize the quality states of fresh Chinese herbs. Methods: The biophoton characteristics of motherwort and safflower were measured and characterized by the counts per second (CPS) in the steady state and the initial intensity (I0) and coherent time (T) of delayed luminescence. The active ingredient content was measured by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). The pigment content of motherwort leaves was measured by UV spectrophotometry. The t-test and correlation analysis were performed on the experimental results. Results: The CPS and I0 of motherwort and I0 of safflower showed a significant downward trend during the growth process, and their active ingredient content showed a trend that increased and then decreased. The CPS, I0, and the content of active ingredients and pigments in a healthy state were significantly higher than those in a poor state, while T showed the opposite results. The CPS and I0 were all significantly and positively correlated with the content of active ingredients and pigments, while the T of motherwort showed the opposite results. Conclusion: It is feasible to identify the quality states of fresh Chinese herbs by using their biophoton characteristics. Both CPS and I0 have better correlations with the quality states and can be considered characteristic parameters of the quality of fresh Chinese herbs.

RESUMO

In today's booming society and in the age of science and technology, the diversification of food processing methods, the continuous extension of the food trade chain, and the potential hazard factors in the food production process all make people pay more and more attention to the establishment, development, and improvement of the hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) system. Only terminal control and post-processing supervision of food can guarantee the absolute safety of food. In the process of processing, it is particularly important to strictly identify and evaluate the food safety hazards. To better assist food production enterprises in establishing and implementing HACCP systems, to implement the primary responsibility of food safety, and to improve the theoretical level and practical application of HACCP system in China, an investigation of the current situation and development frontier of HACCP system in China was conducted. Based on the core journal database of China Knowledge Network, the Chinese Social Science Citation Index database, and the Chinese Science Citation Database as the literature search database platform, the study used the CiteSpace visual metrics software system to analyze 1,084 pieces of literature in the field of HACCP research, in order to track the dynamics and impact of research in this field by Chinese research institutions and major authors, and analyze the research hotspots in the field. It is important for further research on HACCP. The results of the study showed that (1) the number of publications in the field of HACCP in China increased steadily from 1992 to 2004 and then began to decrease; (2) the indexes of journals with more publications were more concentrated, and the journal Food Science published the most; (3) the indexes of major research institutions showed that the cultivation bases of the State Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicinal Materials in the Center of Chinese Medicine Resources of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Medicine, the Guangdong Institute of Occupational Diseases, the Nanchang University of Life Sciences, and the Guangdong Institute of Occupational Diseases were more concentrated. Prevention and Treatment Institute, School of Life Sciences of Nanchang University, China Aquatic Products Quality Certification Center, School of Food Science and Nutrition Engineering of China Agricultural University, and other research structures have the most publications and strong scientific research strength; (4) from the main author indicators, the research in the field of HACCP has formed a total of four more active research teams, involving Chinese herbal medicine, ecological planting, ecological agriculture, occupational disease prevention and treatment, light industry handicrafts, computer software and computer application, agricultural economy, and other research directions. The cooperation between the authors of each team is closer. It is suggested that in terms of food safety requirements, China should not only integrate the traditional supervision measures for food terminals and after the event but also reflect the role of food hazard analysis and assessment in the production process and comprehensively integrate the pre-production, production, and post-production management of food so that food can really be safe.

RESUMO

Betulinic acid (BA) and oleanolic acid (OA) are plant-derived conjugates found in various medicinal plants that have emerged as potential antitumor agents. Herein, a series of novel BA and OA derivatives were synthesized by conjugation with per-O-methylated-ß-cyclodextrin (PM-ß-CD), and their anticancer properties against a panel of three human cancer cell lines were evaluated. Two OA-PM-ß-CD conjugates (48 and 50) were observed to be the most potent conjugates against the three cell lines (MCF-7, BGC-823, and HL-60), with a 15- to 20-fold decrease in the IC50 values (IC50: 6.06-8.47 µM) compared with their parental conjugate (OA). Annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide staining and Western blot analysis revealed that both conjugates induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells. Additionally, in the representative conjugate 48-treated HL-60 cells, a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and subsequent release of cytochrome c into the cytosol were observed, indicating the activation of the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. Furthermore, 48 dramatically induced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in HL-60 cells, and the corresponding effect could be reversed using the ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine. Collectively, these results suggest that the novel pentacyclic triterpenoid derivatives trigger the intrinsic apoptotic pathways via the ROS-mediated activation of caspase-3 signaling, inducing cell death in human cancer cells.

RESUMO

Background: Polysaccharide metal chelate exhibit both immunoregulatory activity and metal element supplementation effects. Methods: In this study, Ruoqiang jujube polysaccharide copper chelate (RJP-Cu) was prepared and the preparation conditions were optimized using the response surface method. Subsequently, RJP-Cu was administered to lambs to evaluate its impact on growth performance, copper ion (Cu2+) supplementation, immune enhancement, and intestinal flora was evaluated. Results: The results indicated that optimal RJP-Cu chelation conditions included a sodium citrate content of 0.5 g, a reaction temperature of 50°C, and a solution pH of 8.0, resulting in a Cu2+ concentration of 583°mg/kg in RJP-Cu. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed significant structural changes in RJP before and after chelation. RJP-Cu displaying characteristic peaks of both polysaccharides and Cu2+ chelates. Blood routine indexes showed no significant differences among the RJP-Cu-High dose group (RJP-Cu-H), RJP-Cu-Medium dose group (RJP-Cu-M), RJP-Cu-low dose group (RJP-Cu-L) and the control group (p > 0.05). However, compared with the control group, the RJP-Cu-H, M, and L dose groups significantly enhanced lamb production performance (p < 0.05). Furthermore, RJP-Cu-H, M, and L dose groups significantly increased serum Cu2+ concentration, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), catalase (CAT), and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) contents compared with control group (p < 0.05). The RJP-Cu-H group exhibited significant increases in serum IgA and IgG antibodies, as well as the secretion of cytokines IL-2, IL-4, and TNF-α compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, RJP-Cu-H group increased the species abundance of lamb intestinal microbiota, abundance and quantity of beneficial bacteria, and decrease the abundance and quantity of harmful bacteria. The RJP-Cu-H led to the promotion of the synthesis of various Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs), improvements in atrazine degradation and clavulanic acid biosynthesis in lambs, while reducing cell apoptosis and lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis. Conclusion: Thus, these findings demonstrate that RJP-Cu, as a metal chelate, could effectively promote lamb growth performance, increase Cu2+ content, and potentially induce positive immunomodulatory effects by regulating antioxidant enzymes, antibodies, cytokines, intestinal flora, and related metabolic pathways.

RESUMO

The present study investigated the effects of dietary riboflavin on growth performance, body composition and anti-oxidative capacity of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) post-smolts. Seven experimental diets were formulated with graded riboflavin levels of 0.00, 3.96, 8.07, 16.11, 31.81, 63.67 and 126.69 mg/kg, respectively. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of 10 fish with an individually initial mean body weight of 186.22 ± 0.41 g in 21 cages (water volume, 1000-L/cage) and fed three times daily (7:30, 12:30 and 17:30) to apparent satiation for 12 weeks. Fish fed a diet with 31.81 mg/kg riboflavin had the highest specific growth rate (SGR), which was significantly higher than fish-fed diets with 0.00, 3.96, 8.07 and 126.69 mg/kg riboflavin (p < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio showed an inverse trend with SGR. No significant differences were observed in condition factor, hepatosomatic index, viscerosomatic index, muscle moisture, crude protein and ash contents among dietary groups. Muscle lipid had the highest content in the 31.81 mg/kg group and was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those in the 0.00, 3.96 and 8.07 mg/kg groups. The alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and malondialdehyde contents in the liver and serum of fish were significantly decreased with the increase in dietary riboflavin level up to 31.81 mg/kg, and then increased as dietary riboflavin level further increased. An inverse trend was observed for total superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly decreased with the dietary of riboflavin levels up to 31.81 and 63.67 mg/kg, respectively. The cubic curve regression analysis based on SGR indicated that the optimum dietary riboflavin level was estimated to be 35.26 mg/kg for coho salmon post-smolts.

RESUMO

Cyanobacterial bloom is by far one of the most common water quality hazards. As cyanobacteria are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and other organic matter, the potential for beneficial use of cyanobacteria is promising. Aerobic composting is currently a hot topic of research in cyanobacteria treatment, which can effectively achieve reduction, recycling, and removal of the harmful impact of cyanobacteria. In this review, the characteristics of cyanobacteria in aerobic composting processes, the effects of physical, chemical, and biological factors on the composting process, and the degradation of microcystic toxins were systematically discussed and summarized. This review epitomizes the large quantities of research data collected by many scholars around the world to address the characteristics of "one low and five highs" in the aerobic cyanobacterial composting process. The composting techniques developed are effective and easy to adopt in the real world, such as adjusting the substrate C/N ratio and moisture content and use of chemical and biological additives to achieve reduction, recycling, and detoxication of the cyanobacterial wastes. The aim of this comprehensive review is to provide theoretical guidance and reference for further development and application of aerobic cyanobacteria composting technology.

RESUMO

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a multi-factor disease characterized by alternating remission periods and repeated occurrence. It has been shown that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an emerging and effective approach for UC treatment. Since most existing studies chose adults as donors for fecal microbiota, we conducted this study to determine the long-term efficacy and safety of the microbiota from young UC patient donors and illustrate its specific physiological effects. Methods: Thirty active UC patients were enrolled and FMT were administered with the first colonoscopy and two subsequent enema/transendoscopic enteral tubing (TET) practical regimens in The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University in China. Disease activity and inflammatory biomarkers were assessed 6 weeks/over 1 year after treatment. The occurrence of adverse events was also recorded. The samples from blood and mucosa were collected to detect the changes of inflammatory biomarkers and cytokines. The composition of gut and oral microbiota were also sampled and sequenced to confirm the alteration of microbial composition. Results: Twenty-seven patients completed the treatment, among which 16 (59.3%) achieved efficacious clinical response and 11 (40.7%) clinical remission. Full Mayo score and calprotectin dropped significantly and remained stable over 1 year. FMT also significantly reduced the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). The gut microbiota altered significantly with increased bacterial diversity and decreased metabolic diversity in responsive patients. The pro-inflammatory enterobacteria decreased after FMT and the abundance of Collinsella increased. Accordingly, the altered metabolic functions, including antigen synthesis, amino acids metabolism, short chain fatty acid production, and vitamin K synthesis of microbiota, were also corrected by FMT. Conclusion: Fecal microbiota transplantation seems to be safe and effective for active UC patients who are nonresponsive to mesalazine or prednisone in the long-term. FMT could efficiently downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokines to ameliorate the inflammation.

RESUMO

MAIN CONCLUSION: The poor-soil-tolerant wild soybean resist phosphorus deficiency by remodeling membrane lipids to reuse phosphorus. The plants synthesize phenolic acids and flavonoids to remove reactive oxygen species and protect membrane stability. Poor soil largely limits plant yields, and the development and utilization of high-quality wild plant resources is an effective approach to resolving this problem. Two ecotypes of wild soybean were used as experimental materials in this experiment. We integrated metabolomics and transcriptomics to determine whether wild soybean (Glycine soja) could resist phosphorus deficiency by remodeling and protecting its membrane system. Under phosphorus-deficient conditions, the plant height and aboveground fresh and dry weight of poor-soil-tolerant wild soybean seedlings were less inhibited than those in common wild soybean. In poor-soil-tolerant wild soybean seedling leaves, the glycerol-3-phosphate content decreased significantly, while caffeic acid, ferulic acid, shikimic acid, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan increased significantly. ß-Glucosidase and chalcone synthase genes and those that encode SQD2, a crucial enzyme in thiolipid biosynthesis, were specifically up-regulated, whereas the glucosyltransferase UGT74B1 gene was down-regulated. The poor-soil-tolerant wild soybean enhanced glycerolipid metabolism to decompose phospholipids and release phosphorus for reuse to improve resistance to phosphorus deficiency. The plants synthesized thiolipids to replace phospholipids and maintain membrane structure integrity and inhibited glucosinolate biosynthesis to promote phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, leading to the production of phenolic acids and flavonoids that removed reactive oxygen species and protected membrane system stability. The experiments evaluated and provided insight into the innovative utilization of wild soybean germplasm resources.

RESUMO

DNA hypermethylation is an epigenetic modification that plays a critical role in the oncogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Aberrant DNA methylation represses the transcription of promotors of tumor suppressor genes, inducing gene silencing. Realgar (α-As4S4) is a traditional medicine used for the treatment of various diseases in the ancient time. Realgar was reported to have efficacy for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). It has been demonstrated that realgar could efficiently reduce DNA hypermethylation of MDS. This review discusses the mechanisms of realgar on inhibiting DNA hypermethylation of MDS, as well as the species and metabolisms of arsenic in vivo.

RESUMO

Subchondral bone lesions, as the crucial inducement for accelerating cartilage degeneration, have been considered as the initiating factor and the potential therapeutic target of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Acupotomy, the biomechanical therapy guided by traditional Chinese meridians theory, alleviates cartilage deterioration by correcting abnormal mechanics. Whether this mechanical effect of acupotomy inhibits KOA subchondral bone lesions is indistinct. This study aimed to investigate the effects of acupotomy on inhibiting subchondral bone resorption and to define the possible mechanism in immobilization-induced KOA rabbits. After KOA modeling, 8 groups of rabbits (4w/6w acupotomy, 4w/6w electroacupuncture, 4w/6w model, and 4w/6w control groups) received the indicated intervention for 3 weeks. Histological and bone histomorphometry analyses revealed that acupotomy prevented both cartilage surface erosion and subchondral bone loss. Further, acupotomy suppressed osteoclast activity and enhanced osteoblast activity in KOA subchondral bone, showing a significantly decreased expression of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9), and cathepsin K (Ctsk) and a significantly increased expression of osteocalcin (OCN); this regulation may be mediated by blocking the decrease in osteoprotegerin (OPG) and the increase in NF-κB receptor activated protein ligand (RANKL). These findings indicated that acupotomy inhibited osteoclast activity and promoted osteoblast activity to ameliorate hyperactive subchondral bone resorption and cartilage degeneration in immobilization-induced KOA rabbits, which may be mediated by the OPG/RANKL signaling pathway. Taken together, our results indicate that acupotomy may have therapeutic potential in KOA by restoring the balance between bone formation and bone resorption to attenuate subchondral bone lesions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) of "Weizhong" (BL40) on the expression of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-CC, PDGF receptor (PDGFR)α and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) in rats with lumbar multifidus muscle injury (LMMI) so as to study its mechanisms underlying improvement of skeletal muscle injury. METHODS: Fifty-four male SD rats were randomly divided into normal group (n=6), model group (n=24) and EA group (n=24), and the latter two groups were further divided into four subgroups (1, 3, 5 and 7 days), with 6 rats in each group. The LMMI model was established by injection of 0.5% bupivacaine (BPVC, 100 µL×4) into the multifidus along the L4 and L5 spinous process. EA (2 Hz/50 Hz, 1 mA) was applied to bilateral "Weizhong"(BL40) for 20 min, once daily for 1, 3, 5 and 7 days respectively, from the first day on after modeling. Histopathological changes of the left multifidus muscle were observed after H.E. staining, and the expression of PDGF-CC, PDGFR-α and MMP-1 proteins in the right multifidus was observed by Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, the expression levels of PDGF-CC protein in the model subgroup 1 d, 3 d and 7 d were significantly decreased (P<0.05), and those of PDGFR-α and MMP-1 proteins in the model subgroup 5 d and 7 d, and PDGF-CC protein in the model subgroup 5 d significantly increased (P<0.05). In comparison with the model subgroups, the expression levels of PDGF-CC in the EA subgroup 3 d, 5 d and 7 d, PDGFR-α in the EA subgroup 5 d, and MMP-1 in the EA group 3 d and 5 d were significantly increased or significantly further increased (P<0.05). H.E. staining showed different shapes and uneven sizes, with large area of damage, enlarged muscle space and inflammatory cell infiltration in the model group, which was relatively milder in the EA subgroups particularly in subgroup 5 d and 7 d. CONCLUSION: EA stimulation of BL40 for about 5 days has a positive effect in promoting the repair of the injured multifidus muscle in LMMI rats, which may be related to its function in up-regulating the expression of muscular PDGF-CC, PDGFR-α and MMP-1 proteins.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: White tea [Camellia sinensis (L) O.Ktze. (Theaceae)] is popular in Asia, but its benefits on olfactory injury are unknown. OBJECTIVE: The present study explores the effects of white tea on the olfactory injury caused by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6J mice (WT) were exposed to CUMS. CUMS mice (CU) were intranasally treated with white tea extract [low tea (LT), 20 mg/kg; high tea (HT), 40 mg/kg] and fluoxetine (CF, 20 mg/kg) for 7 days. Several behavioural tests were conducted to assess depression and olfactory function. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and semi-quantitative reverse transcription PCR were performed separately to observe the changes of related structures and genes transcription level. RESULTS: The depressive behaviours of the LT and HT mice were reversed. The latency time of the buried food pellet test decreased from 280 s (CU) to 130 s (HT), while the olfactory sensitivity and olfactory avoidance test showed that the olfactory behaviours disorder of LT and HT mice were alleviated. The white tea increased the A490 nm values of the cortisol treated cells from 0.15 to 1.4. Reduced mitochondrial and synaptic damage in the olfactory bulb (OB), enhanced expression of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and olfactory marker protein (OMP) were observed in the LT and HT mice. CONCLUSIONS AND DISCUSSION: White tea has the potential in curing the olfactory deficiency related to chronic stress. It lays the foundation for the development of new and reliable drug to improve olfactory.

RESUMO

Glucose oxidase (GOx)-mediated starvation circumvents the energy supply for tumor growth, which has been proved as a potent tumor treatment modality. However, tumor hypoxia negatively affects the efficacy of oxygen-involved glucose decomposition reaction. Moreover, curative effect via glucose depletion is not usually satisfactory enough and adjuvant remedies are always required for a promoted tumor ablation. Herein, a multifunctional nanoreactor based on hollow Bi2Se3 nanoparticles was developed by loading oxygenated perfluorocarbon (PFC) and surface modification with GOx, which was exploited for an enhanced tumor starvation and highly sensitive photothermal therapy (PTT). GOx-mediated tumor starvation could impede the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation and further downregulate the expression of heat shock protein (HSP) to decrease the thermoresistance of cells. Afterwards, near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation was performed not only to trigger sensitized PTT but also to initiate the release of encapsulated oxygen to relieve local hypoxia. Then, such GOx-mediated tumor starvation would be further amplified, accompanying with secondary enhanced suppression of HSP. Both in vitro and in vivo investigations demonstrated that such nanoreactor can realize a fascinating therapeutic outcome with minimal adverse effects in virtue of the improved synergistic starvation therapy and PTT. Taken together, the proposed treatment paradigm may inspire the future development of more intelligent nanoplatforms toward high efficient cancer therapy.

RESUMO

We monitored the type and content of airborne pollen in Haidian District, Beijing City from 2012 to 2016 by the gravity precipitation method, and analyzed the variety of pollen, peak distribution features and changes of its content, and discontinuous variation of concentration. Multiple time scale analysis was carried out for pollen concentration by the ensemble empirical mode decomposition method (EEMD). The relationship between pollen concentration and meteorological factors was analyzed. The results indicated that during the research period, the main types of airborne pollen changed. Woody plants such as Cupressaceae and Salicaceae instead of herbaceous plants contributed the most content of pollen. There was no significant change of the yearly peak distribution of pollen concentration. The concentration in recent five years reduced, while the concentration of herbaceous plants (such as Scolopacjdae) increased. During the statistics period, pollen concentration showed discontinuous changes in early April, late May and early August. Pollen concentration had the change cycle of quasi 2 d, quasi 51 d and quasi 128 d. Among all meteorological factors, temperature played a dominant role in driving the concentration, which may significantly rise during 16 to 18 ℃. The impact of temperature changes on the daily concentration may be delayed and continuous; it is often highly related to the concentration 2-7 d later. Sunshine duration and wind speed had the most significant impact on daily pollen concentration.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The effect of tea consumption on breast cancer survival remained to be explored. Meanwhile, green tea favorably facilitates lipid metabolisms in breast cancer survivors. This study aimed to examine the effect of tea consumption and the interactions with lipids on breast cancer survival. METHODS: A total of 1551 breast cancer patients were recruited between April 2008 and March 2012 and followed up until 31 December 2017 in Guangzhou. The endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using multivariate Cox proportional to estimate the associations. RESULTS: PFS was better among women who regularly drank all teas (mainly green tea) except oolong after cancer diagnosis compared with non-tea drinkers (HR 0.52; 95% CI 0.29 ~ 0.91). This association was more evident among women with normal (HR 0.38; 95% CI 0.18 ~ 0.82) than higher (HR 1.22; 95% CI 0.13 ~ 11.82) total cholesterol, though the interaction was not significant. Moreover, the more they drank (≥ 7 times/week), the better prognosis was (HR 0.30; 95% CI 0.11 ~ 0.84). In contrast, oolong tea was observed to have a potential impaired effect on PFS. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested that regularly drinking all teas (mainly green tea) except oolong after diagnosis was beneficial to breast cancer survival, particularly for women with normal lipids, while oolong tea may have an impaired effect.

Mg-Al, Zn-Al and Mg-Fe magnetic layered double hydroxide (LDH) adsorbents were synthesized. The adsorption effect and influencing factors of these adsorbents were explored, and the adsorption mechanism of phosphorus was studied with advanced instruments. The results showed that the best adsorption performance was observed when the molar ratio of metals was 3 for the magnetic LDH adsorbents, and the maximum adsorption amount for phosphorus was 74.8, 80.8 and 67.8 mg/g for Mg-Al, Zn-Al and Mg-Fe LDHs, respectively. Pseudo-second-order kinetics could be used to describe the adsorption process of phosphorus onto the magnetic LDHs. The adsorption of phosphorus onto the magnetic LDHs was an exothermic process. Lower temperatures were favourable for adsorption, and the adsorption of phosphorus onto the magnetic LDHs was a spontaneous process. When the solid-liquid ratios were 0.10 g/L, 0.10 g/L and 0.05 g/L for Mg-Al, Zn-Al and Mg-Fe magnetic LDHs, respectively, the highest adsorption amount of phosphorus was achieved for each magnetic LDH. The maximum adsorption amount was observed at pH values of 6.0-8.0. The inhibitory effect of HCO3- on the adsorption capacity of phosphorus onto the magnetic LDHs was the strongest at a higher HCO3- concentration level. The relative content of -OH significantly reduced after adsorption of phosphorus by the FTIR analysis, which indicated that the mechanism of phosphorus removal was mainly through the exchange between hydroxyl on the adsorbent surface and phosphorus in water. XPS studies showed that oxygen provided electrons during the adsorption of phosphorus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effect of statin treatment on circulating coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been studied in numerous randomized controlled trails (RCTs). However, whether statin treatment decreases circulating CoQ10 is still controversial. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify RCTs to investigate the effect of statin treatment on circulating CoQ10. We calculated the pooled standard mean difference (SMD) using a fixed effect model or random effect model to assess the effect of statin treatment on circulating CoQ10. The methodological quality of the studies was determined according to the Cochrane Handbook. Publication bias was evaluated by a funnel plot, the Egger regression test, and the Begg-Mazumdar correlation test. RESULTS: Twelve RCTs with a total of 1776 participants were evaluated. Compared with placebo, statin treatment resulted in a reduction of circulating CoQ10 (SMD, - 2.12; 95% CI, - 3.40 to - 0.84; p = 0.001), which was not associated with the duration of statin treatment (Exp, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.97 to 1.03; p = 0.994). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that both lipophilic statins (SMD, - 1.91; 95% CI, - 3.62 to 0.2; p = 0.017) and hydrophilic statins (SMD, - 2.36; 95% CI, - 4.30 to - 0.42; p = 0.028) decreased circulating CoQ10, and no obvious difference was observed between the two groups (SMD, - 0.20; 95% CI, - 0.208 to 0.618; p = 0.320). In addition, both low-middle intensity statins (SMD, - 2.403; 95% CI, - 3.992 to - 0.813; p < 0.001) and high intensity statins (SMD, - 1.727; 95% CI, - 2.746 to - 0.709; p < 0.001) decreased circulating CoQ10. Meta-regression showed that the effect of statin on decreasing circulating CoQ10 was not closely associated with the duration of statin treatment (Exp, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.97 to 1.03; p = 0.994). CONCLUSIONS: Statin treatment decreased circulating CoQ10 but was not associated with the statin solution, intensity, or treatment time. The findings of this study provide a potential mechanism for statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) and suggest that CoQ10 supplementation may be a promising complementary approach for SAMS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Weizhong" (BL 40) on morphology and expression of creatine kinase (CK) and interleukin-17 (IL-17) in rats with bupivacaine-induced multifidus muscle injury. METHODS: A total of 32 male SD rats were randomly divided into a control group, a model group, a Weizhong group and a Shenshu group, 8 rats in each one. The rats in the model group, Weizhong group and Shenshu group were treated with intramuscular injection of 0.5% bupivacaine to establish the model of multifidus muscle injury; the rats in the control group were injected with 0.9% sodium chloride solution. The rats in the Weizhong group and Shenshu group were treated with EA (2 Hz/10 Hz in frequency, 1~2 mA in intensity) at "Weizhong" (BL 40) and "Shenshu" (BL 23), 20 min per treatment. No treatment was given in the control group and model group. After 14-day treatment of EA, the inflammatory cell count, scar tissues area and muscle fiber cross sectional area of multifidus muscle were observed with HE and Masson staining method. The activity of CK and serum content of IL-17 were test with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method; the expression of IL-17 in multifidus muscle was measured with immunohistochcmical method. RESULTS: After intervention, the inflammatory cell count and scar tissues area in the model group, Weizhong group and Shenshu group were higher than those in the control group (all P<0.01), but the muscle fiber cross sectional area was significantly reduced (all P<0.01); the inflammatory cell count and scar tissues area in the Weizhong group and Shenshu group were lower than those in the model group (all P<0.01), and the muscle fiber cross sectional area was significantly increased (P<0.01, P<0.05). After intervention, the expression of IL-17 in multifidus muscle, serum content of IL-7 and activity of CK in the model group, Weizhong group and Shenshu group were higher than those in the control group (all P<0.01); the expression of IL-17 in multifidus muscle, serum content of IL-7 and activity of CK in the Weizhong group and Shenshu group were lower than those in the model group (P<0.01, P<0.05); compared with the Shenshu group, the down-regulation of IL-17 was more obvisous in the Weizhong group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: EA at "Weizhong" (BL 40) can down-regulate the overexpression of serum CK and IL-17, alleviate inflammation reaction and improve the repair of multifidus muscle.
