RESUMO

Incineration is a promising disposal method for sewage sludge (SS), enriching more than 90% of phosphorus (P) in the influent into the powdered product, sewage sludge ash (SSA), which is convenient for further P recovery. Due to insufficient bioavailable P and enriched heavy metals (HMs) in SSA, it is limited to be used directly as fertilizer. Hence, this paper provides an overview of P transformation in SS incineration, characterization of SSA components, and wet-chemical and thermochemical processes for P recovery with a comprehensive technical, economic, and environmental assessment. P extraction and purification is an important technical step to achieve P recovery from SSA, where the key to all technologies is how to achieve efficient separation of P and HMs at a low economic and environmental cost. It can be clear seen from the review that the economics of P recovery from SSA are often weak due to many factors. For example, the cost of wet-chemical methods is approximately 5∼6 €/kg P, while the cost of recovering P by thermochemical methods is about 2∼3 €/kg P, which is slightly higher than the current P fertilizer (1 €/kg P). So, for now, legislation is significant for promoting P recovery from SSA. In this regard, the relevant experience in Europe is worth learning from countries that have not yet carried out P recovery from SSA, and to develop appropriate policies and legislation according to their own national conditions.

The long-term insufficient dissolved oxygen (DO), excessive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have become the main causes of the troublesome eutrophication. Herein, a 20-day sediment core incubation experiment was conducted to comprehensively evaluate the effects of two metal-based peroxides (MgO2 and CaO2) on eutrophic remediation. Results indicated that CaO2 addition could increase DO and ORP of the overlying water more effectively and improve the anoxic environment of the aquatic ecosystems. However, the addition of MgO2 had a less impact on pH of the water body. Furthermore, the addition of MgO2 and CaO2 removed 90.31% and 93.87% of continuous external P in the overlying water respectively, while the removal of NH4+ was 64.86% and 45.89%, and the removal of TN was 43.08% and 19.16%. The reason why the capacity on NH4+ removal of MgO2 was higher than that of CaO2 is mainly that PO43- and NH4+ can be removed as struvite by MgO2. Compared with MgO2, mobile P of the sediment in CaO2 addition group was reduced obviously and converted to more stable P. Notably, the microbial community structure of sediments was optimized by MgO2 and CaO2, which showed that the relative abundance of anaerobic bacteria decreased and that of aerobic bacteria increased significantly, especially some functional bacteria involved in the nutrient cycle. Taken together, MgO2 and CaO2 have a promising application prospect in the field of in-situ eutrophication management.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease which causes disability and threatens the health of humans. Therefore, it is of great significance to seek novel effective drugs for RA. It has been reported that various ginsenoside monomers are able to treat RA. However, it is still unclear which ginsenoside is the most effective and has the potential to be developed into an anti-RA drug. METHODS: The ginsenosides, including Rg1, Rg3, Rg5, Rb1, Rh2 and CK, were evaluated and compared for their therapeutic effect on RA. In in vitro cell studies, methotrexate (MTX) and 0.05% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was set as a positive control group and a negative control group, respectively. LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells and TNF-α-induced HUVEC cells were cultured with MTX, DMSO and six ginsenosides, respectively. Cell proliferation was analyzed by MTT assay and cell apoptosis was carried out by flow cytometry. CIA mice model was developed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of ginsenosides. The analysis of histology, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and cytokine detections of the joint tissues were performed to elucidate the action mechanisms of ginsenosides. RESULTS: All six ginsenosides showed good therapeutic effect on acute arthritis compared with the negative control group, Ginsenoside CK provided the most effective treatment ability. It could significantly inhibit the proliferation and promote the apoptosis of RAW 264.7 and HUVEC cells, and substantially reduce the swelling, redness, functional impairment of joints and the pathological changes of CIA mice. Meanwhile, CK could increase CD8 + T cell to down-regulate the immune response, decrease the number of activated CD4 + T cell and proinflammatory M1-macrophages, thus resulting in the inhibition of the secretion of proinflammatory cytokine such as TNF-α and IL-6. CONCLUSION: Ginsenoside CK was proved to be a most potential candidate among the tested ginsenosides for the treatment of RA, with a strong anti-inflammation and immune modulating capabilities.

Blast furnace dust (BFD), a hazardous metallurgical waste, is generated during the iron-making process and consists plenty of Fe and C. This study is among the first to apply BFD in catalytic-ceramic-filler (CCF) preparation and degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). The novel BFD based Fe-Ni CCF obviously enhanced the removal of CIP (from around 42%-72% after 3 h) in comparation with troditional Fe-C ceramic-filler(CF). The Fe-Ni CCF was further applied in a coupled system of electrolysis assisted catalytic micro-electrolysis (E-CME) process for CIP wastewater treatment. Under optimal operating conditions (iron rod as anode, voltage of 10v and HRT of 3 h), nearly 97% of CIP, 90% of total organic carbon (TOC) and 99% of total phosphorus (TP) were removed by E-CME process in near-neutral solution. The degradation mechanism analysis by LC-MS revealed that polyhydroxy sub-stituted, piperazine rings cleavage and so on were the main reaction of CIP in E-CME process. Additionally, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) residue after E-CME process could be effectively eliminated by up-flow anaerobic filter (UAF), owing to the significant improvement of wastewater biodegradability by E-CME pretreatment. This study provides a new way for co-friend recycling of BFD and a highly-efficient, cost-sffective technology for CIP wastewater treatment.

A modified biological aerated filter (BAF) system configured Fe-C micro electrolysis was applied to enhance phosphorus and ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal. A novel sludge ceramic and sintering ferric-carbon ceramic (SFC) were separately packed into a lab-scale BAF and Fe-C micro electrolysis reactor. The BAF and Fe-C micro electrolysis coupled system was operated about 230days. The enhancement of phosphorus and ciprofloxacin removals by Fe-C micro electrolysis, the degradation mechanisms of CIP and the variations of microbial population were investigated. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (CODcr), ammonia (NH4-N), total phosphorus (TP) and CIP reached about 95%, 95%, 80% and 85% in the combined process, respectively. Configuring Fe-C micro electrolysis significantly enhanced phosphorus and CIP removal, whereas had no promotion on N removal. Four main degradation pathways were proposed according to the LC-MS analysis. More than 12 degradation products were detected through the treatment of Fe-C micro electrolysis and only 3 biodegraded products with low concentration were identified in BAF effluent. The high-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the microbial community changed a lot under CIP pressure. The relative abundance of Sphingomonadaceae, Xanthomonadaceae, Bradyrhizobium, Helicobacter and Pseudomonas increased with CIP influent. This study provides a promising process in CIP wastewater treatment.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the relationship between the adverse events and efficacy of sorafenib in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), with a purpose to guide the judgment of efficacy in sorafenib treatment.Eighty-three mRCC patients who received sorafenib therapy at northwest China were studied retrospectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to correlate tumor response, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) with adverse event types and grades.Among 83 patients who underwent sorafenib therapy, 2 cases (2.4%) had completed response (CR), 14 cases (16.9%) had partial response (PR), 57 cases (68.7%) had stable disease (SD), and 10 cases (12.0%) developed progressive disease (PD). The median PFS and OS were 15.0 and 29.0 months, respectively. The most frequent grade 1 or 2 adverse events included hand-foot syndrome (68.7%), diarrhea (54.2%), and alopecia (51.8%). The most common grade 3 or 4 adverse events were hand-foot syndrome (6.0%), hypertension (4.8%), and diarrhea (3.6%). The frequency and severity of adverse events correlated with tumor response rate (both with P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed the independent predictors of better PFS included rash (OR 0.307, 95%CI 0.148-0.636, P = 0.001) and diarrhea (OR 0.391, 95%CI 0.169-0.783, P = 0.008). Elevated transaminase was the independent predictor of poor PFS (OR 2.606, 95%CI 1.299-5.532, P = 0.012). For OS, rash (OR 0.473, 95%CI 0.253-0.886, P = 0.019) and diarrhea (OR 0.321, 95%CI 0.171-0.605, P = 0.000) correlated with better OS.Sorafenib-related adverse events are associated with efficacy in patients with mRCC from northwest China. Rash and diarrhea are independent protective factors of both PFS and OS, and elevated transaminase is an independent risk factor of PFS. A large prospective study is warranted.
