RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Prostatitis seriously endangers the health of men. While they have been widely used in recent years, there remains a lack of systematic evaluation of the clinical efficacy of α-receptor blockers (α-RBs)/α-adrenergic receptor blockers (α-ARBs) in its treatment. Based on this, this study was developed to systematically evaluate the clinical effect of α-ARB in the treatment of prostatitis. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) studying α-RBs or α-ARBs, placebos, or other measures to treat prostatitis were searched in Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and CBM databases from establishment to December 2020. The quality of included articles was evaluated using the Cochrane System Review Manual and Jadad tools, and a meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of six articles meeting the requirements were found and included 450 patients. Meta-analysis showed that the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) score [mean difference (MD) =-1.76, 95% confidence interval (CI): (-3.35 to -0.17), and P=0.03], pain score [MD =-2.24, 95% CI: (-3.65 to -0.83), and P=0.002], voiding symptom score [MD =-1.21, 95% CI: (-2.06 to -0.35), and P=0.006], and quality of life score [MD =-1.40, 95% CI: (-1.48 to -1.33), and P<0.00001] for patients in the experimental group were lower in contrast to those in the control group after the treatment. DISCUSSION: The use of α-ARB could significantly improve the treatment effect of patients with prostatitis and improve their quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Digestive tumors are malignant tumors of epithelial origin with high rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. At present, surgery is the main treatment for patients with digestive tumors. In this study, we conducted a survey of patients with digestive cancers to explore the influence of family support on postoperative quality of life, with the aim of providing a basis of reference for further improvement of the quality of life of such patients. METHODS: A total of 82 patients with digestive cancer who underwent surgery in Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine between October, 2018 and April, 2019 were selected to take part. The self-made questionnaire, the European Cancer Research and Treatment Organization's Core Quality of Life Questionnaire for Cancer Patients, and the Family Support Scale were used to investigate the patients, and the collected data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The family support scores of the 82 enrolled patients ranged from 5 to 15 points, with an average score of (8.86±2.47) points; 60 cases (73.17%) scored ≥10 points and 12 cases (26.83%) scored <10 points. Patients who were married, aged under 30 years old, or employed as civil servants had higher family support scores than other patients (P<0.05). The scores for physical function, emotional function, and overall health status/quality of life in patients who had a high family support score were higher than those in patients who had a low family support score (P<0.05). According to the logistic regression model, Patients with higher age, getting married, with education level of bachelor degree or above, occupation as farmer and with other digestive tract tumor got higher family support score. (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Good family support can effectively improve quality of postoperative life for patients with digestive cancer. Education, age, occupation and marriage are all independent factors that affect family support.

This was a prospective multicenter observational study, aiming to explore the effects of acupuncture on smoking cessation in Hong Kong. From March of 2010 to August of 2015, a total of 5202 smokers were recruited based on inclusion criteria and treated with acupuncture for 8 weeks. As a result, 2940 subjects finished the study with a drop-out rate of 43.48%. The self-reported 7-day point abstinence rate was 34.00% in Week 8 and 18.40% in Week 52. The exhaled carbon monoxide level and the number of cigarettes smoked per day were reduced significantly after treatment. The time to relapse was calculated to be 38.71 days. In addition, "cigarettes smoked per day," "Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence," "total sessions of acupuncture," "whether finished 8 acupuncture treatments in the first month," and "total sessions of acupuncture" were believed to be essential factors for abstinence success. It was concluded that acupuncture was a safe method for smoking cessation and was effective in helping smokers to quit; therefore, acupuncture could be considered as one of the methods to help smokers quit. Further studies regarding the effect differences between acupuncture and medications were needed to clarify the overall benefits of acupuncture.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics of smokers treated with acupuncture for smoking cessation in Hong Kong. METHODS: A total of 2051 subjects were recruited in a clinical pilot research project "acupuncture for smoking cessation", which was conducted jointly by Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and Hong Kong Pok Oi Hospital from January of 2011 to December of 2013. The characteristics of study subjects, including baseline information, smoking background, intention to quit and influencing factors were analyzed. RESULTS: The majority of subjects treated with acupuncture for smoking cessation in Hong Kong was male (66.7% ), but the proportion of female smokers in this study (33.3%) was higher than that of female smokers in Hong Kong population (13.8%, P < 0.05). Subjects were at the mean age of 43.83 years old, of which the percentage of females aged 31-40 years was the highest (38.8% , P < 0.05). The mean duration of smoking was 25.49 years. The number of cigarettes smoked per day was 17.57 cigarettes. Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) was 5.29 points. Most of the subjects had attempted quitting smoking (81.42% ). The confidence index (7.44 points) and the readiness to quit smoking (8.13 points) were high. Subjects quitting smoking were mostly due to health cause (81.91%). The majority of subjects were at the level of middle school (61.63%). The higher the educational level was, the lower the tobacco dependence was and the higher the confidence in successfully quitting smoking was. 50.27% of subjects chose acupuncture for smoking cessation mainly through friends, television and network publicity. Subjects who had received acupuncture had the highest confidence index, while those who wanted to try a new method had the lower confidence index. smoking cessation mainly through friends, television and network publicity. Subjects who had received acupuncture had the highest confidence index, while those who wanted to try a new method had the lower confidence index. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture for smoking cessation was more popular in female smokers, especially those aged 31-40 years. The effectiveness of acupuncture-smoking cessation was most significant in the smokers over 60.

Background. Observational studies of smoking cessation with acupuncture have been reported widely; however, few researchers have focused on its predictors. Objective. This paper attempts to explore the predictors for smoking cessation with acupuncture in a Hong Kong population, aiming to provide references for clinical treatment in the future. Methods. We performed a secondary analysis of data from our observational study "Acupuncture for Smoking Cessation (2011-2014)" in Hong Kong. A total of 23 indexes were selected as possible predictors, and study participants with complete information of 23 indexes were included. By taking 8-week and 52-week smoking cessation results as dependent variables, binary logistic regression method was used to identify the predictors. Additionally, based on an M5P decision-tree algorithm, an equation of "successful rate of smoking cessation with acupuncture" was calculated. Results. (1) 2,051 study participants were included in total. (2) According to the results of binary logistic regression, variables including treatment location, total number of acupuncture sessions received, and whether the study participants received at least 6 sessions of acupuncture were taken as the short-term predictors; gender, treatment location, Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), and total number of acupuncture sessions received were taken as the long-term predictors. (3) According to study participants' FTND, treatment location, and number of cigarettes smoked/day, the equation of "successful rate of smoking cessation with acupuncture" was established. Conclusion. Receiving sufficient and qualified acupuncture is the leading factor for short-term smoking cessation with acupuncture, whereas individual factors and smoking background play a more important role in long-term smoking cessation with acupuncture.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of pressing auricular points on myopia in children. METHODS: Myopic children aged 8-9 years were divided into two groups. The Chinese herb Semen Vaccariae was used to stimulate the auricular points of CO10, LO5, TF4, CO15, CO12, and CO13 for three treatment courses for the experimental group (n = 39), while the same therapy was not given to the control group (n = 33). Binocular naked vision of the experimental group and the control group before and after the intervention was measured using a standard E visual.acuity chart. RESULTS: There was no difference in the binocular naked vision between the experimental group and the control group before the intervention. In contrast, there was significant improvement in binocular naked vision in the experimental group after the intervention compared with the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: When combined with external medical application, non-invasive auricular therapy could improve the function of myopia in children. Auricular pressing was well received by the children.

An observational study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture for smoking cessation, and determine predictors for successful quitters. Smokers received at least 6 sessions of body acupuncture provided by Chinese medicine practitioners and initiated self-administered auricular acupuncture. We determined self-report 26-week and 52-week quit rates by intention-to-treat analysis and examined predictors for successful quitting by univariate and multivariate analyses. A total of 1002 smokers were recruited; 26-week and 52-week quit rates were 16.8% and 15.8%, respectively. Male sex, older age, lower nicotine dependence level, and number of body acupuncture and counseling sessions received were associated with successful quitting. A multiple logistic regression model showed that sex, nicotine dependence level, and number of body acupuncture sessions received were predictors for successful quitting. Body and auricular acupuncture is effective in smoking cessation and should be considered as an alternative to help smokers in quitting, especially for those whose past attempts using conventional methods were in vain.

Up to December of 2011, the domestic and overseas literatures of acupuncture for smoking cessation are searched and collected through Pubmed, CNKI, Wanfang and Chongqing VIP databases, which are analyzed from treatment method, action mechanism, influencing factors of efficacy and efficacy evaluation research and so on. The result shows that (1) acupuncture has positive effect on smoking cessation, and large clinical trials has been carried out. However, most of them are needling methods and the short-term effect observation, which lack of long-term efficacy research of withdrawal symptoms, especially continuous withdrawal symptoms and index of life quality. (2) Because of unified clinical treatment, manipulation standard and curative effect criteria, it is difficult to make comparison among them. (3) The study of mechanism on acupuncture for smoking cessation is not of in-depth. In future, clinical research project of acupuncture on smoking cessation should be optimized and regulated, including the unified treatment, manipulation standard and curative effect criteria, also long-term researches with large-scale samples should be launched to confirm effect ofacupuncture for smoking cessation to further discuss its action mechanism.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy differences between acupuncture-moxibustion and medication in xerophthalmia. METHODS: Eighty cases of xerophthalmia were randomly divided into an acupuncture-moxibustion group and a medication group, 40 cases in each group. In acupuncture-moxibustion group, acupuncture was applied to the local and distal points, such as Jingming (BL 1), Cuanzhu (BL 2), Taiyang (EX-HN 5) and Quchi (LI 11) etc., combined with non-smoking moxibustion. In medication group, Sodium Hyaluronate eye drops were administered, three times per day, 1 drop each time. Before and after treatment, tear secretion volume (Schirmer's test), break-up time (BUT), symptom score, visual function score and tear film grade were observed. RESULTS: The total effective rate was 73.1% (57/78) in acupuncture-moxibustion group, and was 37.2% (29/78) in medication group, indicating significant statistical difference in comparison (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in statistics in tear secretion volume between two groups after treatment (P < 0.05), in which, the result in acupuncture-moxibustion group was superior to that in medication group. The significant statistical differences presented in tear secretion volume, BUT, symptom score, visual function score and tear film grade in comparison before and after treatment in acupuncture-moxibustion group (all P < 0.05). The significant statistical difference presented in symptom score and tear film grade before and after treatment in medication group (both P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture-moxibustion apparently relieves the symptoms of xerophthalmia, promotes tear secretion and improves the life quality of patients.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of catgut embedding (CE) at "Shimen" (CV 5) on the endometrial receptivity, pinopodes expression of the endometrial surface and leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) immunoactivity during periimplantation period. METHODS: Thirty Kunming mice were randomly divided into control, CE of "Shimen" (CV 5, CE-CV 5) and medication groups (n = 10/group). For mice of CE-CV 5 group, a piece of catgut was embedded into the subcutaneous tissue of "Shimen" (CV 5) on the day when the vagina-discharged epistom was found (pregnancy day 1, Pd 1). On Pd 4, mifepristone (0.1 mL, diluted in propylene glycol) was subcutaneously injected into CV 5 in rats of medication group. The expression of endometrial pinopodes (sampled on Pd 5) was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The immunoactivity of LIF of the endometrium was detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Compared with control group, the mean optical density (OD) values of LIF in CE-CV 5 and medication groups decreased significantly (P < 0.05), suggesting an downregulation of the endometrial LIF expression. No significant difference was found between CE-CV 5 and medication group in LIF expression (P > 0.05). Electronic microscopic observation showed (1) abundant mature pinopodes on the endometrial surface, with a large number of well-stacked ecphyma in control group; (2) fewer pinopodes and well-arranged smooth epithelial cells on the endometrial surface in catgut embedding group; and (3) no pinopodes found in the endometrium of medication group. CONCLUSION: Catgut embedding at "Shimen" (CV 5) can suppress the establishment of the mouse endometrial receptivity, which is possibly related to its effect in inhibiting the expression of endometrial pinopodes and LIF.
