In recent years, heightened interest surrounds the exploration of natural phenols as potential agents for cancer therapy, specifically by inducing ferroptosis, a unique form of regulated cell death characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. This review delves into the roles of key natural phenols, flavonoids, phenolic acids, curcumin, and stilbenes, in modulating ferroptosis and their underlying mechanisms. Emphasizing the significance of amino acid, lipid, and iron metabolism, the study elucidates the diverse pathways through which these phenols regulate ferroptosis. Notably, curcumin, a well-known polyphenol, exhibits multifaceted interactions with cellular components involved in ferroptosis regulation, providing a distinctive therapeutic avenue. Stilbenes, another phenolic class, demonstrate promising potential in influencing lipid metabolism and iron-dependent processes, contributing to ferroptotic cell death. Understanding the intricate interplay between these natural phenols and ferroptosis not only illuminates complex cellular regulatory networks but also unveils potential avenues for novel cancer therapies. Exploring these compounds as inducers of ferroptosis presents a promising strategy for targeted cancer treatment, capitalizing on the delicate balance between cellular metabolism and regulated cell death mechanisms. This article synthesizes current knowledge, aiming to stimulate further research into the therapeutic potential of natural phenols in the context of ferroptosis-mediated cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: Folic acid supplementation is recommended for reducing the risk of birth defects. We aimed to assess the protective association of periconception folic acid supplements with birth defects in real-world setting. METHODS: This prospective, population-based cohort study utilized national preconception registered data of married Chinese couples planning a pregnancy within 6 months between 2010 and 2012 in Mainland China. Participated women are freely provided folic acid starting 3 months before conception till 3 months after conception. Birth defects were self-reported at 42 days postpartumn followup. R software (v4.0.2) was applied for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Complete data of 567,547 couples with pregnancy outcomes and folic acid supplementation were extracted for final analysis. A total of 74.7% women were with folic acid supplementation, and 599 birth defects were self-reported. The odd of birth defects was lower among women taking folic acid compared to their counterparts not taking (0.102% vs 0.116%, P < 0.001). In the multiple logistic regression analyses, the odd of birth defects was lower among couples with maternal folic acid supplementation (OR = 0.78, 95%CI: 0.66-0.95, P = 0.011), especially decreased odd of neural tube defects (NTDs) (OR = 0.56, 95%CI: 0.39-0.82, P = 0.003). This association was confirmed by 1:4 and 1:10 case control analysis. Odds of birth defects were significantly lower among women with folic acid supplementation more than 3 months before pregnancy (P < 0.001), and moreover, the odds of cleft (P = 0.007) and NTDs (P = 0.007) were of notable decrease. CONCLUSION: This retrospective case cohort study provides programmatic evidence for public health strategy-making to for reducing the risk of NTDs and clefts.

To examine the associations between macrosomia risk and exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its chemical components during pregnancy, we collected birth records between 2010 and 2015 in mainland China from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project and used satellite-based models to estimate concentrations of PM2.5 mass and five main components, namely, black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), nitrate (NO3-), sulfate (SO42-), and ammonium (NH4+). Associations between macrosomia risk and prenatal exposure to PM2.5 were examined by logistic regression analysis, and the sensitive subgroups were explored by stratified analyses. Of the 3,248,263 singleton newborns from 336 cities, 165,119 (5.1%) had macrosomia. Each interquartile range increase in concentration of PM2.5 during the entire pregnancy was associated with increased risk of macrosomia (odds ratio (OR) = 1.18; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.17-1.20). Among specific components, the largest effect estimates were found on NO3- (OR = 1.36; 95% CI, 1.35-1.38) followed by OC (OR = 1.23; 95% CI, 1.22-1.24), NH4+ (OR = 1.22; 95% CI, 1.21-1.23), and BC (OR = 1.21; 95% CI, 1.20-1.22). We also that found boys, women with a normal or lower prepregnancy body mass index, and women with irregular or no folic acid supplementation experienced higher risk of macrosomia associated with PM2.5 exposure.

Better understanding of important roles of metabolic reprogramming in therapeutic resistance provides insights into advancing cancer treatment. Herein, we present a photoactive metabolic reprogramming strategy (termed as photometabolism therapy, PMT), in which photoregulation of mitochondria leads to cancer cell metabolic crisis, and consequently overcomes therapeutic resistance while improving treatment efficacy. In specific, a stimuli-responsive metabolism NanoValve is developed for improving cascade cancer therapy through blocking mitochondrial energy supply. NanoValve is composed of an onion-like architecture with a gold nanorod core, a mesoporous silica shell encapsulating photosensitizer chlorin e6 and oxygen-saturated perfluorocarbon, and cationic liposomal coating with MMP2-cleavable polyethylene glycol corona, which together initiate mitochondria-specific PMT. NanoValve selectively responds to tumor-overexpressed MMP2 and achieves size decrease and charge reversal, which consequently enhances tumor penetration, cancer cell uptake, endosome escape, and most critically, mitochondrial accumulation. Importantly, NanoValve-mediated phototherapy can strongly destruct mitochondrial energy metabolism, thereby minimizing therapy resistance. Particularly, perfluorocarbon supplies oxygen to further overcome the tumor hypoxia-associated therapeutic barrier and maximizes synergistic anticancer effects. In vivo studies show that NanoValve can effectively eliminate tumors without side effects, thereby dramatically prolonging the survival of tumor-bearing mice. Thus, NanoValve provides a modular PMT approach and has the potential of advancing the treatment of malignancy.

Small-molecular-weight collagen peptides (CPs) with high zinc-chelating ability were extracted from pufferfish skin. Chelation of CPs with zinc was performed to prepare novel CP-chelated zinc (CP-Zn) nanoparticles. CP-Zn nanoparticles were spherical, regular, and well dispersed with an average size of ∼100 nm. The zeta potential assay was used to explore the stability of CP-Zn nanoparticles. CP-Zn nanoparticles were much more stable in the pH range of 3-8. The structural properties of CP-Zn nanoparticles were characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results indicated that CPs were chelated with Zn ions through the amino nitrogen and oxygen atoms from the carboxyl groups. Furthermore, the animal experiment results showed that CP-Zn nanoparticles were more effective in improving zinc bioavailability of Zn-deficient rats than zinc gluconate and zinc sulfate. The study demonstrated that CP-Zn nanoparticles were ideal for zinc supplementation.

The aim of this paper was to study the effect and mechanism of fucoxanthin on insulin resistance of obese mice induced by high-fat diet. Fifty C57 BL/6 J male mice were randomly divided into control group and high-fat diet group. The insulin resistance model was induced with high-fat diet for 12 weeks, and model mice were randomly divided into model group, fucoxanthin-0.2% group, fucoxanthin-0.4% group and metformin group. After dietary treatment for 6 weeks, the body weight and epididymal fat weight in each group were measured. Fasting blood glucose(FBG), fasting insulin(FINS), total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), low-density lipoprotein(LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein(HDL-C) were measured, and insulin resistance index(HOMA-IR) was calcula-ted. The pathological morphology in liver was observed by hematoxylin eosin staining, and the expressions of some key proteins in insulin receptor substrate 1(IRS-1)/posphoinositide 3-kinase(PI3 K)/serine-threonine kinase(Akt) and peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor-γ(PPARγ)/sterol regulatory element binding protein-1(SREBP-1)/fatty acid synthetase(FAS) pathways in liver were detected by Western blot. According to the findings, compared with the model group, levels of body weight, epididymal fat weight, FBG, FINS, TC, TG, LDL-C and HOMA-IR, as well as protein expressions of PPARγ, SREBP-1 and FAS in liver were significantly reduced(P<0.05 or P<0.01), while level of HDL-C and protein expressions of p-IRS-1, IRS-1, PI3 K and p-Akt in liver were signi-ficantly increased after treatment with fucoxanthin(P<0.05 or P<0.01). And the pathological changes of liver tissue in fucoxanthin-treated mice were also improved obviously. The results showed that fucoxanthin could improve obesity, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia, and alleviate insulin resistance in obese mice, and its mechanism is possibly related to the regulation of IRS-1/PI3 K/Akt and PPARγ/SREBP-1/FAS pathways.

BACKGROUND: Potential modification of the association between maternal particulate matter (PM) exposure and preterm delivery (PTD) by folic acid (FA) supplementation has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether FA supplementation could reduce the risk of PTD associated with maternal exposure to PM in ambient air during pregnancy. METHOD: In a cohort study covering 30 of the 31 provinces of mainland China in 2014, 1,229,556 primiparas of Han ethnicity were followed until labor. We collected information on their FA supplementation and pregnancy outcomes and estimated each participant's exposure to PM with diameters of ≤10µm (PM10), 2.5µm (PM2.5), and 1µm (PM1) using satellite remote-sensing based models. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to examine interactions between FA supplementation and PM exposures, after controlling for individual characteristics. RESULTS: Participants who initiated FA ≥3 months prior to pregnancy (38.1%) had a 23% [hazard ratio (HR)=0.77 (95% CI: 0.76, 0.78)] lower risk of PTD than women who did not use preconception FA. Participants with PM concentrations in the highest quartile had a higher risk of PTD [HR=1.29 (95% CI: 1.26, 1.32) for PM1, 1.52 (95% CI: 1.46, 1.58) for PM2.5, and 1.22 (95% CI: 1.17, 1.27) for PM10] than those with exposures in the lowest PM quartiles. Estimated associations with a 10-µg/m3 increase in PM1 and PM2.5 were significantly lower among women who initiated FA ≥3 months prior to pregnancy [HR=1.09 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.10) for both exposures] than among women who did not use preconception FA [HR=1.12 (95% CI: 1.11, 1.13) for both exposures; pinteraction<0.001]. The corresponding association was also significantly lower for a 10-µg/m3 increase in PM10 [HR=1.03 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.03) for FA ≥3 months before pregnancy vs. 1.04 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.04) for no preconception FA; pinteraction<0.001]. CONCLUSION: Our findings require confirmation in other populations, but they suggest that initiating FA supplementation ≥3 months prior to pregnancy may lessen the risk of PTD associated with PM exposure during pregnancy among primiparas of Han ethnicity. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP6386.

The widespread use of neonicotinoids (NEOs) and fipronils (FIPs) as insecticides in modern agriculture has been widely investigated because of their adverse effects on human health. This study aimed to develop an accurate quantitative approach to analyze NEOs and FIPs in tea by using a modified QuEChERS method based on dispersive solid-phase extraction procedure coupled with liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. To minimize matrix interferences largely, we selected polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) and strong cationic exchange adsorbent (PCX) as dispersive adsorbents to eliminate polyphenols and caffeine from tea extract, respectively. Under optimal conditions, a slight matrix effect was observed for NEOs and FIPs due to the highest reductions of polyphenols and caffeine (94% and 88%, respectively). The method was validated by the European Medicines Agency and Eurachem guidelines and was successfully applied to tea samples for NEOs and FIPs analysis. NEOs and FIPs were commonly detected in tea.

In view of the high polarity and ubiquitous occurrence of perchlorate, achieving an ultra-trace analysis has become a challenging task. The present study aimed to develop a simple and generic pretreatment protocol based on cold-induced liquid-liquid extraction to efficiently extract perchlorate from tea and dairy products and remarkably decrease potential matrix interferences and laborious cleanup. By optimizing the pretreatment conditions, the enrichment factor of perchlorate increased by 7.79 times under the compromise between the matrix effect and extraction recovery. The validated method presented satisfactory selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and matrix effect, providing recoveries of 78.2%-106.2% with RSDr ranging from 1.2% to 7.9% and RSDR less than 10.7% for tea and dairy products. This pretreatment protocol depended only on shaking, freezing, and centrifugation in one step, without additional equipment or tedious operations, which will be explored to a greater extent in complex biological or food matrices.

Pholidota chinensis Lindl. is commonly used as functional tea or folk medicine in China, but few studies have been conducted on its phenolic composition and bioactivities. This study was aimed to investigate the phenolic profiles of P. chinensis extracts by different solvents (petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water) and their in vitro antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities. The results showed that a total of 42 phenolic compounds were accurately identified, 30 of them were further quantified in P. chinensis extracts by UPLC-MS/MS. Among four extracts, ethyl acetate extract not only had the highest contents of total phenolics and 21 individual phenolic compounds, but also possessed the strongest antioxidant (DPPH, 1.43 mmol AAE/g; ABTS, 5.38 mmol TE/g; FRAP, 2.58 mmol FSHE/g), α-glucosidase inhibition (13.29 mmol ACAE/g) and anti-inflammation (IC50 = 18.71 µg/ml) activities. Also, the antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities were significantly correlated with total phenolics and individual phenolic compounds. Orientin and vitexin can be considered as the potential quality markers of P. chinensis. This study will provide a comprehensive phenolic profile of P. chinensis and relates them to their antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities.

RESUMO

Pien-Tze-Huang (PTH) is a famous and commonly used traditional Chinese medicine formula in China. It was first formulated by a royal physician of the Ming Dynasty (around 1555 AD). Recently, PTH has attracted attention worldwide due to its beneficial effects against various diseases, especially cancer. This paper systematically reviewed the up-to-date information on its chemical composition, pharmacology, and clinical application. A range of chemical compounds, mainly ginsenosides and bile acids, have been identified and quantified from PTH. Pharmacological studies indicated that PTH has beneficial effects against various cancers, hepatopathy, and ischemic stroke. Furthermore, PTH has been used clinically to treat various diseases in China, such as colorectal cancer, liver cancer, and hepatitis. In summary, PTH is a potential agent with extensive therapeutic effects for the treatment of various diseases. However, the lack of information on the side effects and toxicity of PTH is a non-negligible issue, which needs to be seriously studied in the future.

To modulate starch digestibility, dry heating combined with annealing treatment was employed to synergistically modulate structure and digestibility of normal maize starch (NMS) and potato starch (PS). Dry heating decreased starch molecular weight and created small molecular fractions with suitable chain length, resulting in starch better rearrangement during annealing treatment. Accordingly, after dry heating combined with annealing treatment starches had the highest pasting temperature, the thinnest and the thickest of crystalline lamellae for NMS and PS, respectively, and the highest ordered structures of cooked-starch compared with single dry heating or annealing modified starches. The results revealed that the synergistic modification altered starch lamellar thickness and increased double helices orders. Thereby, dry heating combined with annealing treated starches exhibited the lowest enzymatic digestibility with increased ca. 7.90% of slowly digestible starch for NMS or elevated ca. 5.04% of resistant starch for PS. The differential changes caused by dry heating combined with annealing treatment between NMS and PS were comprehensively discussed and the difference should result from the different starch crystalline structure and average chain length. This study provides a promising pathway for modulating starch structures and enzymatic digestibility.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of nutritional intervention for Kazak's pregnant women, lactating women and infants in farming and stockbreeding region of Jeminay County, Altay City. METHODS: 24 h record method was conducted to implement dietary survey, and results were used to analyze dietary structure and nutrient intake level of pregnant women, lactating women and infants. Pregnant women, lactating women and infants over 6 months were intervened with iron fortified soy sauce nutrients supplement and Yingyangbao(YYB) for 2. 4 years. Hemoglobin was detected for pregnant women, lactating women and infants by using HemoCue analyzer. RESULTS: The nutrient intakes of the pregnant women, lactating women and infants were averagely lower than that of the recommended levels. In these infants who received breast feeding, the least acceptability diet quality rate was 42. 1%, and in other infants who didn't receive breast feeding, the rate was 25%. After intervention, anemia prevalence of pregnant women, lactating women and infants were significantly reduced compared with the base line levels at 2 survey time points(2014:pregnant women χ~2=26. 27, lactating women χ~2=18. 06, infants χ~2=44. 46, 2015:pregnant women χ~2=35. 62, lactating women χ~2=25. 05, infants χ~2=39. 61;all P<0. 001). CONCLUSION: The nutrition intervention of whole covering could improve nutrition status of Kazak's pregnant women, lactating women and infants.

Phosphorus (P) is arguably more limiting than nitrogen for forest ecosystems being free of disturbances for lengthy time periods. The elucidation of multivariate relationships between foliar P and its primary drivers for dominant species is an urgent issue and formidable challenge for ecologists. Our goal was to evaluate the effects of primary drivers on foliar P of Quercus wutaishanica, the dominant species in broadleaved deciduous forest at the Loess Plateau, China. We sampled the leaves of 90 Q. wutaishanica individuals across broad climate and soil nutrient gradients at the Loess Plateau, China, and employed structural equation models (SEM) to evaluate multiple causal pathways and the relative importance of the drivers for foliar P per unit mass (Pmass) and per unit area (Parea). Our SEMs explained 73% and 81% of the variations in Pmass and Parea, respectively. Pmass was negatively correlated to leaf mass per area, positively correlated to leaf area, and increased with mean annual precipitation and total soil potassium. Parea was positively correlated to leaf mass per area, leaf dry weight, and increased significantly with total soil potassium. Our results demonstrated that leaf P content of Q. wutaishanica increased with total soil potassium in the Loess Plateau accordingly.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune inflammatory and debilitating disease that involves the systemic imbalance of the immune network. Previous studies have shown that acupuncture can help treat RA. However, its specific mechanisms are not fully understood. Thus, the present study was designed to clarify the mechanisms of acupuncture acted on RA via immune network modulation using complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritic rats. Results revealed that manual acupuncture (MA) could alleviate the inflammation and pain of infected joints. Moreover, MA could effectively stimulate the innate immune cytokines (IL-1[Formula: see text], IL-1[Formula: see text], IL-6, IL-7, IL-18, TNF-[Formula: see text]) and adaptive immunity cytokines (IL-2, IL-12, IFN-[Formula: see text], IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, IL-17) as the main part of the immune response and repaired damage of RA. These complex immunomodulatory processes were analyzed quantitatively by cell-cell communication (CCC) networks. The CCC networks demonstrated that the immune networks were enhanced with the development of RA, while MA enhanced the immune networks in the early stage to act on RA and promoted the immune-network to a normal level at the late stage. Moreover, we found that monocyte/macrophage and endothelial cells were the key cells of innate immunity and body cells; TH1, TH2 and B cells were the key cells of adaptive immunity, which were also the main target cells for MA regulation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Pien-Tze-Huang (PZH) is a famous formula of traditional Chinese medicine used to treating stroke. However, the protective effect of PZH and its mechanisms in acute ischemic stroke remain to be explored. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the protective effect of PZH on neuronal apoptosis in acute cerebral ischemic injury rats and explore its underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of PZH were studied in acute ischemic stroke rats induced by transient middle cerebral artery occlusion, and the mitochondria-mediated apoptotic proteins including cytochrome C (Cyt C), Bax, Bcl-xl, P53, caspase-3, and caspase-9 as well as AKT and glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3ß) were assessed. RESULTS: Four days of PZH treatment (180 mg/kg) could significantly reduce cerebral infarct volume, improve neurological deficit, attenuate inflammatory response, and inhibit neuronal apoptosis in acute ischemic stroke rats. Moreover, PZH treatment significantly decreased cytosolic Cyt C, Bax, P53, cleaved caspase-3, and cleaved caspase-9 levels, but elevated mitochondrial Cyt C and Bcl-xl levels. PZH treatment also increased phosphorylation of AKT and GSK-3ß. CONCLUSION: PZH potently protects the brain from cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in vivo, and inhibiting mitochondria-mediated neuronal apoptosis as well as attenuating inflammatory responses may be involved in this effect. This study provides experimental basis of PZH in treating acute cerebral ischemic stroke, which would provide some novel insights for its prevention and treatment of ischemic stroke.

Robustness, an ability of biological networks to uphold their functionalities in the face of perturbations, is a key characteristic of all living systems. Acupuncture is a procedure in which fine needles are inserted into an individual at discrete points and then manipulated, with the intent of preventing and curing diseases. Acupuncture does not directly eliminate pathogenic factors or pathological tissue; rather, acupuncture enhances the ability of the human body to self-medicate itself by activating complex regulatory systems and by maintaining physiological homeostasis to prevent or treat diseases. From this point of view, the effect of acupuncture on the human body is more likely a kind of regulation to promote robustness. That is to say, acupuncture has the ability to promote robustness. In this article, we review the properties and functions of acupuncture in preventing and treating diseases and in maintaining health by enhancing robustness.

BACKGROUND: To assess socioeconomic inequality in periconceptional folic acid supplementation in China. METHODS: We used data of periconceptional folic acid (FA) supplementation of rural Chinese women from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project from 2010 to 2012 and socioeconomic level data from the National Bureau of Statistics. We used logistic models to assess the associations between the prevalence of taking FA and the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants, the couples, and the socioeconomic levels of their region of residence. RESULTS: Of the 907,720 included women, 682,315 (75.62%) of the women reported taking FA. The prevalence of FA supplementation was significantly higher in participants aged 21-29 (75.87%) than in those women aged 40-49 (68.44%, p < 0.01). The prevalence of FA supplementation was significantly higher in the region with the highest Per Capita Gross Regional Product than in the regions with lower Per Capita Gross Regional Product (aOR = 12.20 [95% CI:9.54-15.61]). The higher the per capita net income of farmer households in the region, the higher the prevalence of FA supplementation (aOR = 1.95 [95% CI:1.74-2.18]). CONCLUSIONS: The rate of periconceptional FA supplementation among rural Chinese women has increased with the support of China's Health System Reform policy. However, socioeconomic disparities in periconceptional folic acid supplementation remain.

Pien-Tze-Huang (PZH) is a popular traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula in China, but its pharmacokinetics has not been investigated yet. To better study the pharmacokinetic behaviors of PZH, an optimal ultra-performance liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for rapid quantification of six compounds (notoginsenoside R1, ginsenosides Re, Rg1, Rb1, Rd, and muscone) in rat plasma after oral administration of PZH. All analytes were extracted by protein precipitation with acetonitrile and separated on a Waters Acquity Cortecs C18 column within 3.9min, and detected by multiple-reaction monitoring in positive ion mode. This proposed method exhibited good linearity (r≥0.9932) with a lower quantification limits of 0.558-1.566ng/mL for all analytes. The intra- and inter-day precisions were within 8.24%, and the accuracy was within -10.05 to 9.87% for each analyte. The extraction recovery for each analyte ranged from 80.02 to 96.12%. This UPLC-MS/MS method was successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic study for PZH in rats.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Salvianolic acid B (Sal B), a major polyphenolic compound of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, has been shown to possess potential antidiabetic activities. However, the action mechanism of SalB in type 2 diabetes has not been investigated extensively. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of Sal B on diabetes-related metabolic changes in a spontaneous model of type 2 diabetes, as well as its potential molecular mechanism. METHODS: Male C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice were orally treated with Sal B (50 and 100 mg/kg) or metformin (positive drug, 300 mg/kg) for 6 weeks. RESULTS: Both doses of Sal B significantly decreased fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, triglyceride and free fatty acid levels, reduced hepatic gluconeogenic gene expression and improved insulin intolerance in db/db mice. High dose Sal B also significantly improved glucose intolerance, increased hepatic glycolytic gene expression and muscle glycogen content, and ameliorated histopathological alterations of pancreas, similar to metformin. Sal B treatment resulted in increased phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK) protein expression in skeletal muscle and liver, increased glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) and glycogen synthase protein expressions in skeletal muscle, and increased peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and phosphorylated acetyl CoA carboxylase (p-ACC) protein expressions in liver. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that Sal B displays beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes at least in part via modulation of the AMPK pathway.
