CONTEXT: Qinggong Shoutao Wan (QGSTW) is a pill used as a traditional medicine to treat age-associated memory decline (AAMI). However, its potential mechanisms are unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study elucidates the possible mechanisms of QGSTW in treating AAMI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches were utilized to identify the potential pathway by which QGSTW alleviates AAMI. C57BL/6J mice were divided randomly into control, model, and QGSTW groups. A mouse model of AAMI was established by d-galactose, and the pathways that QGSTW acts on to ameliorate AAMI were determined by ELISA, immunofluorescence staining and Western blotting after treatment with d-gal (100 mg/kg) and QGSTW (20 mL/kg) for 12 weeks. RESULTS: Network pharmacology demonstrated that the targets of the active components were significantly enriched in the cAMP signaling pathway. AKT1, FOS, GRIN2B, and GRIN1 were the core target proteins. QGSTW treatment increased the discrimination index from -16.92 ± 7.06 to 23.88 ± 15.94% in the novel location test and from -19.54 ± 5.71 to 17.55 ± 6.73% in the novel object recognition test. ELISA showed that QGSTW could increase the levels of cAMP. Western blot analysis revealed that QGSTW could upregulate the expression of PKA, CREB, c-Fos, GluN1, GluA1, CaMKII-α, and SYN. Immunostaining revealed that the expression of SYN was decreased in the CA1 and DG. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: This study not only provides new insights into the mechanism of QGSTW in the treatment of AAMI but also provides important information and new research ideas for the discovery of traditional Chinese medicine compounds that can treat AAMI.

Coronary artery disease has one of the highest mortality rates in the country, and methods such as thrombolysis and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) can effectively improve symptoms and reduce mortality, but most patients still experience symptoms such as chest pain after PCI, which seriously affects their quality of life and increases the incidence of adverse cardiovascular events (myocardial ischaemiareperfusion injury, MIRI). MIRI has been shown to be closely associated with circadian rhythm disorders and mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria are a key component in the maintenance of normal cardiac function, and new research shows that mitochondria have circadian properties. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), as a traditional therapeutic approach characterised by a holistic concept and evidence-based treatment, has significant advantages in the treatment of MIRI, and there is an interaction between the yin-yang theory of TCM and the circadian rhythm of Western medicine at various levels. This paper reviews the clinical evidence for the treatment of MIRI in TCM, basic experimental studies on the alleviation of MIRI by TCM through the regulation of mitochondria, the important role of circadian rhythms in the pathophysiology of MIRI, and the potential mechanisms by which TCM regulates mitochondrial circadian rhythms to alleviate MIRI through the regulation of the biological clock transcription factor. It is hoped that this review will provide new insights into the clinical management, basic research and development of drugs to treat MIRI.

Nanocontraception has been proposed and received extensive attention in recent years for population control. However, currently developed methods for nanocontraception still face problems in efficacy and safety. Here, we propose catalysis-mediated oxidation as a new strategy for nanocontraception. With the catalytic production of highly oxidative species, male contraception was successfully achieved after the administration of black phosphorus nanosheets into the testes of male mice. Further mechanistic studies revealed that contraception was induced by oxidative stress and apoptosis of spermatogenesis cells. Meanwhile, the apoptosis of germ cells released testis antigen and induced immune cell infiltration, which enhanced reproductive damage. Notably, the introduced black phosphorus nanosheets naturally degraded during the catalytic oxidation process and ultimately converted to harmless phosphates, indicating the safety of the strategy. Furthermore, the catalysis-mediated strategy avoids utilizing additional inducers, such as near-infrared irradiation, magnetic fields, or ultrasound, which may cause severe pain. In summary, the proposed catalysis-mediated contraception can be a self-cleared, convenient, and safe strategy for controlling male fertility.

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disease, which has become an essential cause of perinatal and neonatal death. Gut microflora becomes the regulator of host immunity through the metabolic pathway. Epidemiological studies provide convincing evidence that vitamin D supplementation can prevent the onset of preeclampsia. However, research on the microbial mechanisms and effective treatment strategies for placental inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide is lacking. In this study, pregnant rats were induced by LPS to establish a rat model of preeclampsia. Sixteen-sequence analysis was used to determine the composition of microflora in feces. In addition, the protective effect of vitamin D supplementation on LPS-preeclampsia rats was evaluated. The results showed that the blood pressure and creatinine of pregnant rats in the LPS group were significantly higher than those in the control group. In addition, LPS disturbed the intestinal microbial community and reduced microbial diversity. Vitamin D supplementation improves the symptoms of preeclampsia, increases the abundance of intestinal beneficial flora, normalizes the level of inflammatory factors LPS-induced by inhibiting the TLR4/MYD88/NF-κB pathway, and effectively resists the disturbance of uterine spiral artery remodeling induced by LPS. This study established that vitamin D-mediated microbial mechanisms and their inhibition are potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of preeclampsia.

This study investigated the effect of butanol extract of AS (ASBUE) on atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice. The mice were administered ASBUE (390 or 130 mg/kg/day) or rosuvastatin (RSV) via oral gavage for eight weeks. In ApoE-/- mice, ASBUE suppressed the abnormal body weight gain and improved serum and liver biochemical indicators. ASBUE remarkably reduced the aortic plaque area, improved liver pathological conditions, and lipid metabolism abnormalities, and altered the intestinal microbiota structure in ApoE-/- mice. In the vascular tissue of ASBUE-treated mice, P-IKKß, P-NFκB, and P-IκBα levels tended to decrease, while IκB-α increased in high fat-diet-fed atherosclerotic mice. These findings demonstrated the anti-atherosclerotic potential of ASBUE, which is mediated by the interaction between the gut microbiota and lipid metabolism and regulated via the Nuclear Factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. This work paves the groundwork for subsequent studies to develop innovative drugs to treat atherosclerosis.

All species have a physiological need for sleep, and sleep is crucial for the preservation and restoration of many physiological processes in the body. Recent research on the effects of gut microbiota on brain function has produced essential data on the relationship between them. It has been discovered that dysregulation of the gut-brain axis is related to insomnia. Certain metabolites of gut microbiota have been linked to insomnia, and disturbances in gut microbiota can worsen insomnia. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has unique advantages for the treatment of insomnia. Taking the gut microbiota as the target and determining the scientific relevance of TCM to the prevention and treatment of insomnia may lead to new concepts for the treatment of sleep disorders and improve the therapeutic effect of sleep. Taking the gut microbiota as an entry point, this paper reviews the relationship between gut microbiota and TCM, the relationship between gut microbiota and insomnia, the mechanism by which gut microbiota regulate sleep, and the mechanism by which TCM regulates gut microbiota for insomnia prevention and treatment. This review provides new ideas for the prevention and treatment of insomnia through TCM and new ideas for drug development.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of iron nanoliposomes on iron supplementation and toxicity in SD rats induced by a low-iron diet. The size and infrared spectroscopy of a liposomal oral delivery system were investigated. The particle size of nanoliposomes embedded with chelates was increased. Infrared spectra proved that peptides-iron and blank nanoliposomes were bonded by interaction forces, including the fracture of hydrogen bonds, C = C bonds, hydrophobic interaction, and C-N bonds. We found that iron supplementation chelates had a certain protective effect on viscera after being embedded by nanoliposomes. After 10 days of treatment, the concentration of hemoglobin could be gradually increased. Nanoliposome encapsulated peptides-iron has a better effect than other groups. At the same time, SOD, MDA, and CAT reached normal levels after 20 days. Histological results showed that the sections of the nanoliposomes groups were clearer than those of the other groups. There was a little inflammation in the liver without obvious pathological changes, which also proved that the iron chelates embedded by nanoliposomes had no obvious side effects on iron supplementation in rats. Nanoliposome encapsulated peptides-iron has a small side effect and a significant curative effect of iron supplementation. It maybe has a good application prospect in the clinical medical field.

The vanadium-based kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5 has attracted tremendous attention due to its unexcepted anomalous Hall effect (AHE), charge density waves (CDWs), nematicity, and a pseudogap pair density wave (PDW) coexisting with unconventional strong-coupling superconductivity. The origins of CDWs, unconventional superconductivity, and their correlation with different electronic states in this kagome system are of great significance, but so far, are still under debate. Chemical doping in the kagome layer provides one of the most direct ways to reveal the intrinsic physics, but remains unexplored. Here, we report, for the first time, the synthesis of Ti-substituted CsV3Sb5 single crystals and its rich phase diagram mapping the evolution of intertwining electronic states. The Ti atoms directly substitute for V in the kagome layers. CsV3-xTixSb5 shows two distinct superconductivity phases upon substitution. The Ti slightly-substituted phase displays an unconventional V-shaped superconductivity gap, coexisting with weakening CDW, PDW, AHE, and nematicity. The Ti highly-substituted phase has a U-shaped superconductivity gap concomitant with a short-range rotation symmetry breaking CDW, while long-range CDW, twofold symmetry of in-plane resistivity, AHE, and PDW are absent. Furthermore, we also demonstrate the chemical substitution of V atoms with other elements such as Cr and Nb, showing a different modulation on the superconductivity phases and CDWs. These findings open up a way to synthesise a new family of doped CsV3Sb5 materials, and further represent a new platform for tuning the different correlated electronic states and superconducting pairing in kagome superconductors.

INTRODUCTION: Accumulating epidemiological studies support that Vitamin D deficiency is associated with the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. However, it is unknown whether vitamin D can be used as a treatment for preeclampsia. This study aimed to explore whether vitamin D supplementation could improve the rat model of preeclampsia. METHODS: LPS was used to establish a rat model of preeclampsia. Inflammatory cytokines were examined by QRT-PCR and ELISA assays, and the concentration of sfit-1 and NO was assessed by ELISA. Analyzing the pathological features of the placenta with hematoxylin-eosin. The spatial learning and memory abilities of offspring were evaluated by the Morris water maze. Immune histology and western blot were performed to evaluate the expression levels of inflammatory pathway-associated Factor and vascular endothelium-associated Factor in the placenta. RESULTS: Vitamin D treatment reduced the blood pressure and urine protein of PE model rats, alleviated pathological damage to the placenta and pregnancy outcomes, and protected PE offspring from impaired memory and learning abilities. Moreover, TLR4 signaling pathway in the placenta was inhibited. Furthermore, vitamin D supplementation increased the expression of endothelial growth factor and vascular relaxing factor, and there was no significant difference compared with the control group. DISCUSSION: We generated the result that Vitamin D supplementation significantly improved the phenotype of preeclampsia and adverse pregnancy outcome caused by an abnormal inflammatory reaction and endothelial dysfunction in the placenta, and improved the learning and cognitive ability of offspring.

Intestinal macrophages are the main participants of intestinal immune homeostasis and intestinal inflammation. Under different environmental stimuli, intestinal macrophages can be polarized into classical activated pro-inflammatory phenotype (M1) and alternative activated anti-inflammatory phenotype (M2). Its different polarization state is the "guide" to promoting the development and regression of inflammation. Under normal circumstances, intestinal macrophages can protect the intestine from inflammatory damage. However, under the influence of some genetic and environmental factors, the polarization imbalance of intestinal M1/M2 macrophages will lead to the imbalance in the regulation of intestinal inflammation and transform the physiological inflammatory response into pathological intestinal injury. In UC patients, the disorder of intestinal inflammation is closely related to the imbalance of intestinal M1/M2 macrophage polarization. Therefore, restoring the balance of M1/M2 macrophage polarization may be a potentially valuable therapeutic strategy for UC. Evidence has shown that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has positive therapeutic effects on UC by restoring the balance of M1/M2 macrophage polarization. This review summarizes the clinical evidence of TCM for UC, the vital role of macrophage polarization in the pathophysiology of UC, and the potential mechanism of TCM regulating macrophage polarization in the treatment of UC. We hope this review may provide some new enlightenment for the clinical treatment, fundamental research, and research and development of new Chinese medicine of UC.

The decommissioning of uranium mining and metallurgy facilities involves sensitive issues of the local government and the public, which is related to the vital interests of the surrounding residents. Improper disposal may lead to negative emotions among the public and affect the process of uranium mining and metallurgy facilities decommissioning projects. In order to explore the acceptance of uranium mining and metallurgy decommissioning projects by nearby residents and its influencing factors, a hypothesis model of influencing factors of public acceptance was constructed through literature survey. Taking the public around a uranium mining and metallurgy in Hunan Province as an example, a questionnaire survey was carried out. Using the AMOS21.0 tool, the fitting test of the structural equation model was carried out on 506 valid sample data and the hypothetical model, and the key factors affecting the public acceptance of the uranium mining and metallurgy decommissioning project were analyzed. The findings show that public perceived risk (-0.28), familiarity (0.26) and trust (0.175) are key factors influencing acceptance. The research results provide a methodological basis for improving the public acceptance of uranium mining and metallurgy decommissioning projects.

Following the preparation of Acanthopanax senticosus total saponins microemulsion, the formulation and preparation technology were optimized and the quality was evaluated. The absorption characteristics of A. senticosus total saponins microemulsion by the self-microemulsifying drug delivery system(SMEDDS) were investigated in the unidirectional intestinal perfusion model in vivo. The oil phase, mass ratio(K_m), number of revolutions, and drug concentration were subjected to single-factor investigation with the area of pseudo-ternary phase diagram as the index. The process was optimized by D-optimal mixture design with the particle size as the index, and then the appearance, morphology, and particle size were investigated. The mass concentrations of eleutherosides B and E in the microemulsion were determined. The results showed that the optimum formulation of A. senticosus total saponins microemulsion was determined as follows: 20.8% of water phase, 31.2% of isopropyl palmitate, and 48.0% of soybean phospholipid and absolute ethanol(K_m=1∶1). As revealed by the observation under a transmission electron microscope, the microemulsion exhibited homogeneous dispersion and was a spherical emulsion droplet in the water-in-oil type. At room temperature, the pH value was 5.19, the refractive index 1.416 5, the average particle size(26.47±0.04)nm, and the polydispersity index(PDI) 0.118±0.03. The content of the eleutherosides B and E was 0.038 9 and 0.166 4 mg·mL~(-1), respectively. The preliminary stability study showed that the solution was clear and transparent within 30 d, without stratification or content change, indicating good stability. The absorption of microemulsion in each intestinal segment was significantly improved as compared with that of the A. senticosus total saponins, with the best absorption effect detected in the ileum, which has laid a foundation for further development and utilization of A. senticosus.

Seed morphology and quality of cultivated soybean (Glycine max) have changed dramatically during domestication from their wild relatives, but their relationship to selection is poorly understood. Here, we describe a semi-dominant locus, ST1 (Seed Thickness 1), affecting seed thickness and encoding a UDP-D-glucuronate 4-epimerase, which catalyses UDP-galacturonic acid production and promotes pectin biosynthesis. Interestingly, this morphological change concurrently boosted seed oil content, which, along with up-regulation of glycolysis biosynthesis modulated by ST1, enabled soybean to become a staple oil crop. Strikingly, ST1 and an inversion controlling seed coat colour formed part of a single selective sweep. Structural variation analysis of the region surrounding ST1 shows that the critical mutation in ST1 existed in earlier wild relatives of soybean and the region containing ST1 subsequently underwent an inversion, which was followed by successive selection for both traits through hitchhiking during selection for seed coat colour. Together, these results provide direct evidence that simultaneously variation for seed morphology and quality occurred earlier than variation for seed coat colour during soybean domestication. The identification of ST1 thus sheds light on a crucial phase of human empirical selection in soybeans and provides evidence that our ancestors improved soybean based on taste.

We investigated community structure of macroinvertebrate, water environment factors, hydrological factors at 23 sampling sites of the Yongding River basin from spring 2017 (April) to autumn 2017 (November). We analyzed the composition, spatial and temporal distribution of the macroinvertebrate functional feeding groups, as well as their responses to changes in riverine habitat. A total of 78 macroinvertebrate species were identified, with 52, 50 and 53 macroinvertebrate species in spring, summer and autumn respectively. The dominant functional feeding groups were gather-collectors, followed by predators, while the proportion of scrapers, filter-collectors and shredders were extremely low. Dominant species in the three seasons were all gather-collectors, including Orthocladius, Rheotanytarsus, Cricotopus in spring, Glyptotendipes in summer, and Polypedilum, Chironomus, Orthocladius in autumn. Results of redundancy analysis showed that the functional feeding groups of macroinvertebrate community structure were mainly influenced by water temperature, flow velocity, salinity, and total phosphorus in spring, by total phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and flow capacity in summer, and by total phosphorus and dissolved oxygen in autumn. Total phosphorus had positive correlation with gather-collectors in all three seasons, indicating that the functional feeding groups of macroinvertebrates were affected by water pollution. The evaluation based on the metrics of functional feeding groups showed that: 1) in terms of material cycle, primary productivity of Guishui River were significantly higher than other regions, and that in autumn were significantly higher than other seasons. The secondary productivity and decomposition capacity of Yanghe River were significantly higher than other regions, and those in spring were significantly higher than other seasons. The autotrophy/heterotrophy of Yanghe River was significantly lower than other regions, and that in spring were significantly higher than other seasons. 2) The longitudinal transport capacity of Sanggan River was significantly higher than other regions, and that in autumn was significantly higher than other seasons. 3) The lateral input capacity of Guishui River was significantly higher than other regions, and that in summer was significantly higher than other seasons.

Acanthopanax senticosus has been used to extract active products. However, abundant Acanthopanax senticosus residues (ASR), which contain plenty of lignin are discarded after extraction. An appropriate extraction method should be chosen to obtain the lignin with such desirable properties. Thus, this study investigated the effect of alkali, milled wood, deep eutectic solvent and ethanol methods on the lignin. Lignin obtained from different extraction methods were characterized, yields, chemical structure, thermal behavior, molecular weight and phenolic content were evaluated. The results show that the process of lignin acquisition has a great influence on the properties of lignin. Moreover, the multifarious functional groups exist in lignin macromolecules, such as phenolic, ether groups and other chromophores, conferred good UV resistance to lignin. Among them, the lignin from alkali method has the most phenolic-OH groups and smallest molecular weight result in a good UV-resistant, the SPF value achieves 2.39 at 1% AL content, the alkali method was the best way to make sunscreen blended with cream take various factors into consideration. This study used lignin as a bioactive ingredient to provide UV-resistant property to sunscreen formulations. Furthermore, lignin extracted from Acanthopanax senticosus residue provides a new application for the treatment of herb residue waste.

Astilbin, isoastilbin and neoastilbin are the three flavonoid isomers prevalent in Rhizoma Smilax glabra. The interactions between human cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) and the three isomers were investigated by multiple spectroscopic coupled with molecular docking. As a result, the fluorescence intensity of CYP2D6 was quenched statically by the three isomers. Meanwhile, astilbin had the strongest binding ability to CYP2D6, followed by isoastilbin and neoastilbin under the identical temperature. Synchronous fluorescence, three-dimensional fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, circular dichroism and Fourier-transform infrared spectra confirmed that the conformation and micro-environment of CYP2D6 protein were changed after binding with the three isomers. As suggested from molecular docking, the three isomers had strong binding affinity to CYP2D6 via the bonding of hydrogen and van der Waals forces, and the results were in agreement with the fluorescence results. The findings here suggested that astilbin, isoastilbin and neoastilbin may cause the herb-drug interactions for their inhibition of CYP2D6 activity.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Acanthopanax senticosus (AS), previously classified as Eleutherococcus senticosus, is one of the most commonly used herbs in the Chinese materia medica. However, there is currently no comprehensive review summarising advances in AS research. AS has been used as a functional food and in various preparations since ancient times, to invigorate the liver and kidneys, replenish vitality, strengthen the bones, stimulate appetite, and improve memory. It is widely used in countries such as China, Korea, Japan, and Russia, for specific pharmacologic effects, although it contains various chemical components that ensure its broad-spectrum effect. Its chemical constituents mainly include glycosides and flavonoids. Over the past several decades, researchers worldwide have conducted systematic investigations on this herb. AS has positive pharmacological effects on the cardiovascular, central nervous, and immune systems. Representative pathways stimulated by AS are related to neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions, cancer, and phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase/protein kinase B signalling. Importantly, AS is safe and exerts no significant adverse effects at normal doses. AIM OF THE STUDY: To provide comprehensive insights into the ethnobotany, medicinal uses, chemical composition, pharmacological activity, and toxicology of AS to aid its future development and utilisation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Information about AS was collected from various sources, including classic books about Chinese herbal medicine and scientific databases including scientific journals, books, and pharmacopoeia. We discuss the ethnopharmacology of AS from 1965 to 2020 and summarise the knowledge of AS phytochemicals, pharmacological activity, quality control, and toxicology. CONCLUSIONS: From the current literature, we conclude that AS is a promising dietary Chinese herb with various potential applications owing to its multiple therapeutic effects.

Stamen development is an important developmental process controlled by multiple internal and external factors. Developmental abnormalities of stamens can disrupt the structure and function of anthers, and then result in male sterility. As well known, APETELA 3 (AP3) has a clear function in regulating stamen development, which may impact in male sterility. However, the mechanisms of stamen development and male sterility controlled by AP3 are still not very clear, particular in Pak-choi (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis). In this work, BcAP3 encoded a protein containing a MADS-box domain, which was a homolog of AtAP3, was identified in Pak-choi. Sequence alignments and phylogenetic analysis indicated that BcAP3 was highly similar to AtAP3. BcAP3 was shown to be localized to the nucleus and exhibited the potential of transcription factor. The transcript of BcAP3 was only expressed in flowers of Pak-choi, indicating that it may act in flower development. Overexpression of BcAP3 in Arabidopsis resulted in developmental abnormalities of anther wall and low vigor pollen, which were associated with the phenotype of male sterility. Expression levels of NST1 and NST2, involved in secondary wall thickening in anther walls, were significantly higher in the BcAP3-transgenic plants than in control plants, suggesting that BcAP3 may affect anther wall development by regulating NST1 and NST2. Taken together, our study demonstrated that BcAP3 could play an essential role in stamen development and male sterility.

This study aims at exploring the cardiovascular pathophysiological mechanism of TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) pulse by detecting the correlation between radial artery pulse wave variables and pulse wave velocity/echocardiographic parameters. Two hundred Chinese subjects were enrolled in this study, which were grouped into health control group, hypertension group, and hypertensive heart disease group. Physical data obtained in this study contained TCM pulse images at "Guan" position of the left hand, pulse wave velocity, and echocardiographic parameters. Linear and stepwise regression analysis was performed to assess the association of radial artery pulse wave variables with pulse wave velocity and echocardiographic parameters in the total population and in each different group. After adjusting for related confounding factors, decrease of t1, t5 and increase of h1, h3/h1 were statistically associated with arterial stiffness in the total population (P<0.05). Moreover, the correlation study in each group showed that the decrease of both t3 and h5 was also related to arterial stiffness (P<0.05). In terms of echocardiographic parameters, the height of dicrotic wave indicated by h5 was the most relevant pulse wave variable. For the health control, h5 was negatively associated with interventricular septal thickness (VST) and left ventricular posterior wall thickness (PWT) (P<0.05), while for the hypertension population and those with target-organ damage to heart, increase of h5 might be associated with decrease of ejection fraction (EF) and increase of all the remaining echocardiographic parameters especially for left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVDs) and Left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVDd) (P<0.05). In conclusion, we found radial artery pulse wave variables were in association with the arterial stiffness and echocardiographic changes in hypertension, which would provide an experimental basis for cardiovascular pathophysiological mechanism of radial artery pulse wave variables.

The core components of the Hippo signaling pathway are a cascade of kinases that govern the phosphorylation of downstream transcriptional co-activators, namely, YES-associated protein (YAP) and WW domain-containing transcription regulator protein 1 (WWTR1, also known as TAZ). The Hippo signaling pathway is considered an important tumor-suppressor pathway, and its dysregulation has been noted in a variety of human cancers, in which YAP/WWTR1 enable cancerous cells to overcome contact inhibition, and to grow and spread uncontrollably. Interestingly, however, recent studies have told a somewhat different but perhaps more intriguing YAP/WWTR1 story, as these studies found that YAP/WWTR1 function as a central hub that integrates signals from multiple upstream signaling pathways, cell-cell interactions and mechanical forces and then bind to and activate different downstream transcriptional factors to direct cell social behavior and cell-cell interactions. In this review, we present the latest findings on the role of YAP/WWTR1 in skin physiology, pathology and tumorigenesis and discuss the statuses of newly developed therapeutic interventions that target YAP/WWTR1 in human cancers, as well as their prospects for use as skin cancer treatments.
