INTRODUCTION: Considering the increasing incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) worldwide, there is an urgent need to identify efficacious, safe and convenient treatments. Numerous investigations have been conducted on the use of supplements in this domain, with oral supplementation emerging as a viable therapeutic approach for AD or MCI. Nevertheless, given the multitude of available supplements, it becomes imperative to identify the optimal treatment regimen. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Eight academic databases and three clinical trial registries will be searched from their inception to 1 June 2023. To identify randomised controlled trials investigating the effects of supplements on patients with AD or MCI, two independent reviewers (X-YZ and Y-QL) will extract relevant information from eligible articles, while the risk of bias in the included studies will be assessed using the Rob 2.0 tool developed by the Cochrane Collaboration. The primary outcome of interest is the overall cognitive function. Pair-wise meta-analysis will be conducted using RevMan V.5.3, while network meta-analysis will be carried out using Stata 17.0 and ADDIS 1.16.8. Heterogeneity test, data synthesis and subgroup analysis will be performed if necessary. The GRADE system will be employed to assess the quality of evidence. This study is scheduled to commence on 1 June 2023 and conclude on 1 October 2023. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval is not required for systematic review and network meta-analysis. The results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal or at a conference. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: PROSPERO (CRD42023414700).

Background: Anxiety and depression are prevalent mental disorders. As modern society continues to face mounting pressures, the incidence of anxiety and depression is on the rise. In recent years, there has been an increasing breadth of research exploring the relationship between anxiety, depression, and physical activity (PA). However, the current research progress and future development trends are unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the research hotspots and development trends in this field, and to provide guidance for future studies and to provide some reference for clinicians. Methods: We searched the relevant literature of Web of Science Core Collection from the establishment of the database to August 15, 2023. CiteSpace, VOSviewer and Bibliometrix Packages based on the R language were used to analyze the number of publications, countries, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords. Results: A total of 1,591 studies were included in the analysis, and the research in the field of PA on anxiety or depression has consistently expanded. The USA (304 publications), Harvard University (93 publications), and the journal of affective disorders (97 publications) were the countries, institutions, and journals that published the highest number of articles, respectively. According to the keywords, students and pregnant women, adult neurogenesis, and Tai Chi were the groups of concern, physiological and pathological mechanisms, and the type of PA of interest, respectively. Conclusion: The study of PA on anxiety or depression is experiencing ongoing expansion. Clinicians can consider advising patients to take mind-body exercise to improve mood. In addition, future researchers can explore the mind-body exercise and its impact on anxiety or depression, PA and anxiety or depression in specific populations, and adult neurogenesis of various exercise in anxiety or depression.

"Ningbo oriental acupuncture-moxibustion society" was founded in 1930 by ZHANG Junyi. At that era, the enrollment conditions were flexible, the disciplines of warm moxibustion and acupuncture-moxibustion were set and taught by means of face-to-face class and correspondence one. The teaching content included the knowledge of western learning and traditional theory of acupuncture-moxibustion. The Society issued two periodicals, MedicalNewspaper of Warm Moxibustion and Oriental Acupuncture and Moxibustion, the staffs of the Society compiled teaching materials such as Warm Moxibustion and Advanced Acupuncture-Moxibustion, translated relevant books and improved the device and herbal medicine of warm moxibustion. The students trained in the Society worked all of the country and engaged in various professional fields. "Ningbo oriental acupuncture-moxibustion society" has cultivated a large number of excellent talents, adhering the teaching concept of integration of Chinese and western medicine, and has made the contribution to the preservation of precious literature, and promoting the innovation of acupuncture-moxibustion technology and the dissemination of warm moxibustion.

OBJECTIVE: To formulate the first clinical practice guideline for the treatment of cough using Chinese medicine based on the grading of recommendations assessment, development, and evaluation (GRADE) systematic approach, including clinical evidence, evaluation of ancient literature, and expert consensus. METHODS: In the process of development, the regulation of "evidence-based, consensus-assisted, and empirical" was followed, and a comprehensive systematic approach of recommendation assessment, GRADE, evidence-based evaluation, expert consensus, and the Delphi method was used. In the process of guideline development, evidence-based evaluation of ancient literature was included for the first time, and clinical evidence was fully integrated with clinical expert consensus. RESULTS: The clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of cough with Chinese herbal medicine were developed after a comprehensive consideration of evidence-based evaluation and expert opinions. The guideline recommendations focused on recommending herbal compound decoctions and Chinese patent medicines for cough in different conditions. Based on the GRADE systematic approach, we conducted an evidence-based evaluation of the recommended Chinese patent medicines one by one; meanwhile, the expert consensus method was used to unify the recommendations of both. CONCLUSION: Based on clinical evidence, ancient literature evaluation, and expert consensus, a clinical practice guideline for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the treatment of cough was developed, providing the first current clinical practice guideline for domestic and foreign TCM and Western medicine practitioners, especially respiratory professionals at home and abroad.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence showed that acupuncture may improve cognitive function by reducing oxidative stress, key to the pathogenesis in vascular dementia (VaD), but this is yet to be systematically analysed. This study aimed to summarize and evaluate the effect of acupuncture on oxidative stress in animal models of VaD. METHOD: Eight databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane library, CNKI, Wan Fang, CBM, and VIP were searched since their establishment until April 2023, for studies that reported the effect of acupuncture on oxidative stress in VaD animal models. Relevant literature was screened, and information was extracted by two reviewers. The primary outcomes were the levels of oxidative stress indicators. The methodological quality was assessed via the SYRCLE Risk of Bias Tool. Statistical analyses were performed using the RevMan and Stata software. RESULTS: In total, 22 studies with 747 animals were included. The methodology of most studies had flaws or uncertainties. The meta-analysis indicated that, overall, acupuncture significantly reduced the expression of pro-oxidants including reactive oxygen species (standardized mean differences [SMDs] = -4.29, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -6.26, -2.31), malondialdehyde (SMD = -2.27, 95% CI: -3.07, -1.47), nitric oxide (SMD = -0.85, 95% CI: -1.50, -0.20), and nitric oxide synthase (SMD = -1.01, 95% CI: -1.69, -0.34) and enhanced the levels of anti-oxidants including super oxide dismutase (SMD = 2.80, 95% CI: 1.98, 3.61), glutathione peroxidase (SMD = 1.32, 95% CI: -0.11, 2.76), and catalase (SMD = 1.31, 95% CI: 0.05, 2.58) in VaD animal models. In subgroup analyses, acupuncture showed significant effects on most variables. Only partial modelling methods and treatment duration could interpret the heterogeneity of some outcomes. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture may inhibit oxidative stress to improve cognitive deficits in animal models of VaD. Nevertheless, the methodological quality is unsatisfactory. More high-quality research with a rigorous design and further experimental researches and clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Fangji Huangqi Decoction (FJHQ), a traditional Chinese medicinal formula outlined in Zhang Zhongjing's "Jin Gui Yao Lue" during the Han Dynasty, is often used to treat conditions characterized by symptoms like edema and dysuria, including membranous nephropathy (MN). Despite its proven clinical effectiveness, the exact mechanisms through which FJHQ acts on MN remain elusive. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to investigate whether FJHQ enhances BNIP3-mediated mitophagy in podocytes by promoting BNIP3 expression and whether this improvement leads to the amelioration of MN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, by establishing passive Heymann nephritis (PHN) rats, an experimental rat model of MN induced by sheep anti-rat Fx1A serum, we evaluated the effects of FJHQ in vivo. In vitro experiments were carried out by treating primary podocytes with experimental rat serum. Furthermore, the potential mechanism by which FJHQ acts through BNIP3 was further examined by transfecting primary podocytes with the siRNA of BNIP3 or the corresponding control vector. RESULTS: After 4 weeks, significant kidney damage was observed in the rats in the model group, comparatively, FJHQ markedly decreased urine volume, 24-h urinary protein, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (Scr), and increased serum total albumin (ALB). Histology showed that FJHQ caused significant improvements in glomerular hyperplasia, and IgG immune complex deposition in MN rats. JC-1 fluorescence labelling and flow cytometry analysis showed that FJHQ could significantly increase mitochondrial membrane potential in vivo. In the mitochondria of MN model rats, FJHQ was able to down-regulate the expression of P62 and up-regulate the expression of BNIP3, LC3B, and LC3 II/LC3 I, according to Western blot and immunofluorescence studies. Furthermore, FJHQ has been shown to significantly up-regulate mitochondrial membrane potential, down-regulate P62 expression in mitochondria, and up-regulate the expression of BNIP3, LC3B, and LC3 II/LC3 I in mitochondria at the cellular level. After the administration of the autophagy inhibitor chloroquine, the serum of rats treated with FJHQ further increased the expression of LC3 II/LC3 I in primary podocytes, showing higher autophagy flow. After the interference of BNIP3 in podocytes, the effect of FJHQ on mitochondrial membrane potential and autophagy-related proteins almost disappeared. CONCLUSION: FJHQ enhanced mitophagy in podocytes by promoting the expression of BNIP3, thereby contributing to the amelioration of MN. This work reveals the possible underlying mechanism by which FJHQ improves MN and provides a new avenue for MN treatment.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the predictive factors and efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine Shengji Ointment in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers in the elderly population, with the intent of formulating an effective predictive model for deep diabetic foot ulcer healing. The importance of this research lies in its provision of new perspectives and tools for addressing the severe health impact of diabetic foot ulcers in the elderly population, considering the complexity and diversity of its treatment methods. Methods: The study includes 180 elderly patients with Wagner grade 3-4 diabetic foot ulcers that involve the tendon or fascia. The dependent variable is the initiation time of granulation tissue development. Independent variables encompass demographic information, a treatment strategy including Shengji Ointment, pre-treatment trauma assessment data, routine blood count, and biochemical index test results. Lasso regression is employed for variable selection, and Cox regression is utilized for the construction of a prediction model. A nomogram is generated to authenticate the model. Results: The Chinese Medicine treatment approach, ulcer location, creatinine levels, BMI, and haemoglobin levels are identified as independent predictors of granulation tissue development in diabetic foot ulcers. The combined treatment of Chinese herbal Shengji ointment and bromelain positively influenced granulation tissue development. The location of plantar ulcers, impaired renal functionality, obesity, and anaemia are established as independent risk factors that might influence the speed and probability of ulcer healing. The area under the time-dependent ROC curve fluctuates between 0.7 and 0.8, demonstrating substantial discrimination and calibration of the model. Conclusion: The study ascertains that a combined treatment strategy incorporating Shengji Ointment demonstrates greater effectiveness than the use of cleansing gel debridement alone in facilitating the healing of Wagner grade 3 or higher diabetic foot ulcers. Furthermore, the predictive model developed in this research serves as a valuable tool in evaluating the efficacy of Chinese Medicine treatments like Shengji Ointment for diabetic foot ulcers in the elderly. It aids clinicians in effectively assessing and adjusting treatment strategies, thereby proving its significant application value in clinical practice. BACKGROUND: Although depression has been a serious neuropsychiatric disorder worldwide, current antidepressants used in clinical practice have various weaknesses, including delayed onset and low rates of efficacy. Recently, the development of new antidepressants from natural herbal medicine has become one of the important research hotspots. Cucurbitacin B is a natural compound widely distributed in the Cucurbitaceae and Cruciferae families and has many pharmacological activities. The present study aimed to investigate whether cucurbitacin B possess antidepressant-like effects in mice. METHODS: The antidepressant-like effects of cucurbitacin B on mice behaviors were explored using the forced swim test, tail suspension test, open field test, sucrose preference test, and a chronic unpredictable mild stress model of depression together. Then, western blotting and immunofluorescence were used to examine the effects of cucurbitacin B on the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) signaling cascade and neurogenesis in the hippocampus of mice. Furthermore, BDNF-short hairpin RNA, K252a, and p-chlorophenylalanine methyl ester were adopted together to determine the antidepressant mechanism of cucurbitacin B. RESULTS: It was found that administration of cucurbitacin B indeed produced notable antidepressant-like effects in mice, which were accompanied with significant promotion in both the hippocampal BDNF-TrkB pathway and neurogenesis. The antidepressant mechanism of cucurbitacin B involves the hippocampal BDNF-TrkB system but not the serotonin system. CONCLUSIONS: Cucurbitacin B has the potential to be a novel antidepressant candidate.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of noninvasive therapies in the treatment of central poststroke pain (CPSP) by network meta-analysis and to provide an evidence-based basis for clinical practice. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP were searched for clinical randomized controlled studies on noninvasive therapy for CPSP. The retrieval time limit was from the establishment of each database to July 2022. The bias risk assessment tool recommended by Cochrane was used to evaluate the quality of the included randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Stata 14.0 was used for network meta-analysis, and Review Manager 5.3 software was used for traditional meta-analysis. RESULTS: Twelve RCTs involving 8 treatment schemes and 641 patients were finally included. The results of the network meta-analysis showed the following rankings in visual analysis scale (VAS): super laser injury on stellate ganglia (SLI) > transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) > music therapy (MT) > repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) > continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) > transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation (TAES) > common therapy (CT). The total clinical efficiency ranked as follows: psychological training of mindfulness (PT) > rTMS > CT. Clinical adverse reactions ranked as follows: rTMS > MT > CT > SLI. CONCLUSIONS: Noninvasive complementary therapy can effectively alleviate the pain of CPSP patients, and the efficacy and safety of SLI are relatively significant. However, due to the limitations of this study, the efficacy ranking cannot fully explain the advantages and disadvantages of clinical efficacy. In the future, more multicentre, large sample, double-blind clinical randomized controlled trials are needed to supplement and demonstrate the results of this study.

The underlying mechanisms of Cinnamomum kanehirae-stimulated growth and metabolism of Antrodia camphorata remain unknown. Herein, we first observed that the methanol extract of C. kanehirae trunk (MECK) (2 g/L) showed a potent stimulatory effect on A. camphorata triterpenoids production (115.6 mg/L). Second, MECK treatment considerably increased the category and abundance of many secondary metabolites in the mycelia. We identified 93 terpenoids (8 newly formed and 49 upregulated) in the MECK-treated mycelia, wherein 21 terpenoids were the same as those in the fruiting bodies. Third, 42 out of the 93 terpenoids were annotated in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways, mainly involving monoterpenoids and diterpenoids syntheses. Finally, 27 monoterpenes and 16 sesquiterpenes were detected in the MECK, and the two terpenoids with the highest abundance (linalool and α-pinene) were selected for verification and found to considerably increase the terpenoids production of A. camphorata and demonstrate the regulation of mRNA expression levels of nine key genes in the mevalonate pathway via RT-qPCR. This study is beneficial for elucidating the terpenoids synthesis mechanism in A. camphorata.

Introduction: Background and objectives: to investigate the association between the dietary nutrient intake and nutritional status of patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Methods: sixty CD patients who had been diagnosed but had not begun treatment were enrolled. The dietary nutrient intake was recorded after three days of 24-hour recall and was calculated using NCCW2006 software. The nutrition levels were assessed using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). Indicators included body mass index (BMI), mid-arm circumference, the circumference of the upper-arm muscle, triceps skinfold thickness, handgrip strength, and the circumference of both calves. Results: eighty-five per cent of CD patients did not meet the necessary energy requirements. Of these, the protein and dietary fiber intake in 63.33 % and 100 %, respectively, were below the standard of the Chinese dietary reference. Many patients had insufficient intake of vitamins, as well as other macro- and micronutrients. An inverse association was observed between the risk of malnutrition and higher levels of energy (1,590.0-2,070.6 kcal/d, OR = 0.050, 95 % CI: 0.009-0.279) and protein (55.6-70.5 g/d, OR = 0.150, 95 % CI: 0.029-0.773). Appropriate supplementation of vitamin E, calcium, and other dietary nutrients helped to reduce the risk of malnutrition. Conclusions: significant deficiencies in dietary nutrient intake were found in CD patients, and dietary intake was associated with the nutritional status of the patient. Appropriate adjustment and supplementation of nutrient intake may reduce malnutrition risk in CD patients. The gap between actual consumption and recommendation indicates a need for improved nutritional counseling and monitoring. Early relevant advice for the dietary guidance of CD patients may be beneficial for long-term effects associated with nutritional status.


Introducción: Antecedentes y objetivos: investigar la asociación entre la ingesta de nutrientes y el estado nutricional de los pacientes con enfermedad de Crohn (EC). Métodos: se reclutaron 60 pacientes de EC que habían sido diagnosticados, pero no habían iniciado ningún tratamiento. La ingesta de nutrientes se registró tras 3 días de recordatorio de 24 horas y se calculó utilizando el software NCCW2006. El estado nutricional se evaluó mediante la valoración global subjetiva generada por el paciente (PG-SGA). Los indicadores incluyeron el índice de masa corporal, la circunferencia media del brazo, la circunferencia del músculo de la parte superior del brazo, el grosor del pliegue cutáneo del tríceps, la fuerza de agarre y la circunferencia de pantorrilla. Resultados: el 85 % de los pacientes de EC no cubrieron las necesidades energéticas necesarias. De estos, las ingestas de proteína y fibra dietética en el 63,33 % y el 100 %, respectivamente, era más baja que lo que recominenda la norma de referencia dietética china. Muchos pacientes tuvieron una ingesta insuficiente de vitaminas, así como de otros macronutrientes y micronutrientes. Se observó una asociación inversa entre el riesgo de desnutrición y niveles más altos de energía (1590,0-2070,6 kcal/d, OR = 0,050, IC 95 % = 0,009-0,279) y proteínas (55,6-70,5 g/d, OR = 0,150, IC 95 % = 0,029-0,773). La suplementación adecuada de vitamina E, calcio y otros nutrientes dietéticos ayudó a reducir el riesgo de desnutrición. Conclusiones: se observaron deficiencias significativas en la ingesta de nutrientes en los pacientes con EC, y la ingesta dietética se asoció con el estado nutricional del paciente. El ajuste y la suplementación adecuados de la ingesta de nutrientes pueden reducir el riesgo de malnutrición de los pacientes con EC. La diferencia entre el consumo real y la recomendación indica la necesidad de mejorar el asesoramiento y el seguimiento nutricional. El consejo temprano pertinente para la orientación dietética de los pacientes con EC puede ser beneficioso para los efectos a largo plazo asociados al estado nutricional.

Dicranopteris linearis is the best-known hyperaccumulator species of rare earth elements (REEs) and silicon (Si), capable of dealing with toxic level of REEs. Hence, this study aimed to clarify how D. linearis leaves cope with excessive REE stress, and whether Si plays a role in REE detoxification. The results show that lanthanum (La - as a representative of the REEs) stress led to decreased biomass and an increase of metabolism related to leaf cell wall synthesis and modification. However, the La stress-induced responses, especially the increase of pectin-related gene expression level, pectin polysaccharides concentration, and methylesterase activity, could be mitigated by Si supply. Approximately 70% of the Si in D. linearis leaves interacted with the cell walls to form organosilicon Si-O-C linkages. The Si-modified cell walls contained more hydroxyl groups, leading to a more efficient REE retention compared to the Si-free ones. Moreover, this [Si-cell wall] matrix increased the pectin-La accumulation capacity by 64%, with no effect on hemicellulose-La and cellulose-La accumulation capacity. These results suggest that [Si-pectin] matrix fixation is key in REE detoxification in D. linearis, laying the foundation for the development of phytotechnological applications (e.g., REE phytomining) using this species in REE-contaminated sites.

Toosendanin (TSN) is a natural anti-cancer compound that is isolated from the traditional Chinese herbal Melia toosendan Sieb et Zucc. However, the research effect of TSN in the treatment of Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is still far from ideal. In this work, we investigated TSN and its derivatives in terms of their actions against MDA-MB-231 and HCC1806 TNBC cell lines. The results indicated that TSN and its derivative 11 showed excellent antitumor activity. Preliminary mechanistic studies showed that both compounds TSN and 11 induced S-phase arrest and G2/M phase cell number decrease in HCC1806 cells. Also, TSN and 11 significantly reduced the protein level of the well-known cancer suppressor gene p53, reduced the phosphorylation of AKT and ERK, and also induced the accumulation of phosphorylated p38 and p21.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Callicarpa longissima is a typical Yao ethnomedicine that has been used to treat arthritis in China. Our previous study found that the dichloromethane extract (DCME) of C. longissima showed anti-inflammatory activity in vitro. However, the anti-inflammatory mechanism and detailed chemical composition of DCME remain unclear, which lead to the original interest of this study. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties of the DCME from C. longissima and further explore the accurate chemical components responsible for this active extract. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anti-inflammatory activity of DCME in vivo was tested with carrageenan-induced mice paw edema model. Its anti-inflammatory mechanism was explored with LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages model. The compounds in DCME were isolated by repeated column chromatography and their structures were identified on the basis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The anti-inflammatory activities of the isolates in vitro were also tested by suppressing releases of inflammatory mediators (NO, IL-6 and TNF-α) in RAW264.7 macrophages model. In addition, the molecular docking analysis, which evaluated the potential interaction between the compounds and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), was performed. RESULTS: DCME effectively alleviated the mice paw edema induced by carrageenan. In LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, DCME significantly decreased the production of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) via inhibiting their mRNA transcription, down-regulated the expression of TLR4 and myeloid differentiation factor 88, inhibited the phosphorylation of alpha inhibitor of NF-κB (IκBα), NF-κB p65, and degradation of IκBα. Twelve diterpenoid phenols were identified from DCME, and they not only showed different inhibitory effects on the production of NO, IL-6 and TNF-α in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, but also could bind to TLR4 and NF-κB as analyzed by molecular docking. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, DCME from C. longissima could inhibit inflammatory response both in vitro and in vivo, which is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of abundant diterpenoid phenols through inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, and might be a promising agent for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the differential quality of tea made from leaves at different development stages. Fresh Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze "Sichuan Colonial" leaves of various development stages, from buds to old leaves, were subjected to transcriptome sequencing and metabolome analysis, and the DESeq package was used for differential expression analysis, followed by functional enrichment analyses and protein interaction analysis. Target metabolome analysis indicated that the contents of most compounds, including theobromine and epicatechin gallate, were lowest in old leaves, and transcriptome analysis revealed that DEGs were significantly involved in extracellular regions and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, photosynthesis-related pathways, and the oleuropein steroid biosynthesis pathway. Protein-protein interaction analysis identified LOC114256852 as a hub gene. Caffeine, theobromine, L-theanine, and catechins were the main metabolites of the tea leaves, and the contents of all four main metabolites were the lowest in old leaves. Phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, photosynthesis, and brassinosteroid biosynthesis may be important targets for breeding efforts to improve tea quality.

To obtain a theoretical reference for understanding the changes in metabolites of Yigong tea leaves during different harvesting periods and to determine the optimal harvesting period, we performed a metabolome comparison using UPLC-Q-Exactive MS on Yigong tea leaves from different harvesting periods. The results indicated that a total of 41 metabolites were significantly altered during the growth of Yi Gong tea leaves. These involved 7 amino acids and their derivatives, 16 flavonols and flavonol glycosides, 4 organic acids, 3 catechins, 3 carbohydrates, 7 fatty acid esters, 1 terpene, and 3 substances from others. In particular, the levels of arginine and glutamine were higher in early-harvested tea leaves than in late-harvested tea leaves; the levels of flavonoids and flavonols were higher in late-harvested tea leaves. Metabolic pathway analysis revealed that the caffeine metabolism and the flavonoid biosynthesis perform key roles in Yigong tea leaves from different harvesting periods. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: At present, the application of metabolomics in tea research is focused on the study of pesticide residues, processing processes, environmental stresses, and regional differences. This study is to focus on the effect of the tea harvesting period on tea quality through metabolomics. Through metabolomics, we can better determine the optimal tea harvesting period, and this study can improve the quality of this tea product and may be able to bring some favourable favorable contributions contribution to the local tea marketing in the future.

RESUMO

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat diabetes for a long time, but its application has not been widely accepted due to unstandardized product quality and complex pharmacological mechanisms. The modernization of TCM is crucial for its further development, and in recent years the metabolomics technique has largely driven its modernization. This review focuses on the application of NMR-based metabolomics in diabetic therapy using TCM. We identified a series of metabolic pathways that altered significantly after TCM treatment, providing a better understanding of the metabolic mechanisms of TCM for diabetes care.

Violet phosphorus quantum dots (VPQDs) are promising structures for bioimaging, solar cells, LEDs, diode lasers, and transistors due to the quantum confinement effects. Bandgap tuning is important for QDs to adjust their emissions for various applications. Nevertheless, no bandgap tuning of VPQDs has been investigated, since the violet phosphorus has just recently been successfully produced and confirmed. In this work, the bandgap of VPQDs has been demonstrated to be effectively tuned from 2.3 to 3.1 eV by a facile solvothermal path in different solvents to introduce different functional groups. The HOMO-LUMO gaps of VPQDs from different functionalizations have also been calculated by density functional theory to be 2.73, 2.77, 2.74, 2.80, 2.51, and 2.56 eV, respectively, which are well-consistent with the experimental results. Our results provide a simple pathway for bandgap tuning of VPQDs, which can be used for future optoelectronic applications.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide. This study aimed to investigate whether supplementation of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) in parenteral nutrition may have beneficial effects on ROP in preterm infants. METHODS: A total of 89 preterm infants, admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital from September 2017 to August 2020, were recruited in the study. Based on the medical documents, the subjects were categorised into two groups: administration of the fish oil emulsion (n=43) containing soy oil, medium-chain-triglycerides (MCT), olive oil and fish oil (6g/dL, 6g/dL, 5g/dL and 3g/dL respectively), and the soy oil emulsion (n=46) containing 10g/dL of soy oil and MCT each. At 4 weeks of hospitalization, ROP was screened and diagnosed. Fatty acids in erythrocytes were determined using gas chromatography. RESULTS: The averaged birth weight and gestational age were 1594±296 g and 31.9±2.3 wk, 1596±263 g and 31.6±2.3 wk respectively for preterm infants in the fish oil group and soy oil group. After 4 to 6 weeks of hospitalization, among all the preterm infants, 52 developed ROP (all stages) indicating an incidence of ROP at 58.43%. Although the incidence of ROP with any stages showed no differences between the two groups, the severe ROP incidence in the group with fish oil emulsions (2.33%) was significantly lower than that in the group with soy oil emulsions (23.91%) (P<0.05). After 14 days of nutrition support, the preterm infants administered fish oil emulsions had an increase in erythrocyte DHA content, with a reduction in ratio of arachidonic acid (AA) to DHA and an increase of n-3 index. CONCLUSION: Supplementation of n-3 PUFAs through parenteral fish oil containing lipid emulsions resulted in an increase in erythrocyte DHA, and this might have beneficial effects on prevention of severe ROP in preterm infants.
