RESUMO

Embolization is often used to block blood supply for controlling the growth of fibroids and malignant tumors, but limited by embolic agents lacking spontaneous targeting and post-treatment removal. So we first adopted nonionic poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) with an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) to build up self-localizing microcages by inverse emulsification. The results showed that these UCST-type microcages behaved with the appropriate phase-transition threshold value around 40 °C, and spontaneously underwent an expansion-fusion-fission cycle under the stimulus of mild temperature hyperthermia. Given the simultaneous local release of cargoes, this simple but smart microcage is expected to act as a multifunctional embolic agent for tumorous starving therapy, tumor chemotherapy, and imaging.

Protection coatings with self-healing ability can significantly enhance their anti-corrosion properties and service life. In this study, self-healing waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coatings with high transparence and haze were facile fabricated via cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) stabilized linseed oil (LO) Pickering emulsion. Sustainable CNCs displayed outstanding emulsifying ability and stability to stabilize LO Pickering emulsion. The size of LO Pickering emulsion droplets decreases with the CNC concentration, while the emulsion fraction and surface coverage by CNCs increase with CNC concentration, leading to a more stable Pickering emulsion. The self-healing rates of WPU coatings at varied time, temperature, CNC and catalyst concentration were investigated. Higher temperature, larger emulsion droplets, and with driers employed as catalysts generally lead to faster self-healing rate. The WPU self-healing coatings displayed much better abrasion resistance and mechanical properties than pristine WPU due to the incorporation of CNCs. Moreover, the WPU self-healing coatings show a high transparence and haze due to light scattering, and their applications as coatings of lamp covers and glass to achieve uniform light distribution and privacy protection with high light transmission were further demonstrated.

Cancer has become one of the primary causes of death worldwide. Current cancer-therapy schemes are progressing relatively slowly in terms of reducing mortality, prolonging survival, time and enhancing cure rate, owing to the enormous obstacles of cancer pathophysiology. Therefore, specific diagnosis and therapy for malignant tumors are becoming more and more crucial and urgent, especially for early cancer diagnosis and cancer-targeted therapy. Derived theranostics that combine several functions into one "package" could further overcome undesirable differences in biodistribution and selectivity between distinct imaging and therapeutic agents. In this article, we discuss a chief clinical diagnosis tool - MRI - focusing on recent progress in magnetic agents or systems in multifunctional polymer nanoassemblies for combing cancer theranostics. We describe abundant polymeric MRI-contrast agents integrated with chemotherapy, gene therapy, thermotherapy, and radiotherapy, as well as other developing directions.

A reliable and comprehensive method for identifying the origin and assessing the quality of Epimedium has been developed. The method is based on analysis of HPLC fingerprints, combined with similarity analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA) and multi-ingredient quantitative analysis. Nineteen batches of Epimedium, collected from different areas in the western regions of China, were used to establish the fingerprints and 18 peaks were selected for the analysis. Similarity analysis, HCA and PCA all classified the 19 areas into three groups. Simultaneous quantification of the five major bioactive ingredients in the Epimedium samples was also carried out to confirm the consistency of the quality tests. These methods were successfully used to identify the geographical origin of the Epimedium samples and to evaluate their quality.
