BACKGROUND: The apoptosis of pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAECs) is an important factor contributing to the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH), a serious cardio-pulmonary vascular disorder. Salidroside (SAL) is a bioactive compound derived from an herb Rhodiola, but the potential protective effects of SAL on PAECs and the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to determine the role of SAL in the hypoxia-induced apoptosis of PAECs and to dissect the underlying mechanisms. STUDY DESIGN: Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were subjected to hypoxia (10% O2) for 4 weeks to establish a model of PH. Rats were intraperitoneally injected daily with SAL (2, 8, and 32 mg/kg/d) or vehicle. To define the molecular mechanisms of SAL in PAECs, an in vitro model of hypoxic cell injury was also generated by exposed PAECs to 1% O2 for 48 h. METHODS: Various techniques including hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, CCK-8, Western blot, qPCR, molecular docking, and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) were used to determine the role of SAL in rats and in PAECs in vitro. RESULTS: Hypoxia stimulation increases AhR nuclear translocation and activates the NF-κB signaling pathway, as evidenced by upregulated expression of CYP1A1, CYP1B1, IL-1ß, and IL-6, resulting in oxidative stress and inflammatory response and ultimately apoptosis of PAECs. SAL inhibited the activation of AhR and NF-κB, while promoted the nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and increased the expression of its downstream antioxidant proteins HO-1 and NQO1 in PAECs, ameliorating the hypoxia-induced oxidative stress in PAECs. Furthermore, SAL lowered right ventricular systolic pressure, and decreased pulmonary vascular remodeling and right ventricular hypertrophy in hypoxia-exposed rats. CONCLUSIONS: SAL may attenuate the apoptosis of PAECs by suppressing NF-κB and activating Nrf2/HO-1 pathways, thereby delaying the progressive pathology of PH.

Introduction: This study focuses on understanding the unique causes and mechanisms of "Chinese-style lurking" on WeChat among university students, within a cultural context that emphasizes collectivism and face concern. The research also looks into the moderating role of trait mindfulness. Methods: For the confirmation of these phenomena and to validate the theories, a structural equation model was constructed using the Stress-Strain-Outcome (SSO) theory and mindfulness buffering theory. The model was then tested and validated with data from 1,453 valid online surveys. These data were analyzed using the SmartPLS 4.0 software. Results: The results indicate that collectivism increases face concern, which in turn escalates online social anxiety. Face concern completely mediates between collectivism and online social anxiety, creating a serial mediation effect between face concern, online social anxiety, and lurking behavior. Additionally, trait mindfulness was found to negatively modulate the pathways from collectivism to face concern and from online social anxiety to lurking. Discussion: The findings underscore the influence of traditional Chinese culture on contemporary students' online behavior and provide a new perspective for understanding social media lurking in an Eastern context. The results suggest that a mindfulness-based approach could be used to mitigate the associated silence and anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: To review the effectiveness of different physical therapies for acute and sub-acute low back pain supported by evidence, and create clinical recommendations and expert consensus for physiotherapists on clinical prescriptions. DATA SOURCES: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and the Cochrane Library for studies published within the previous 15 years. REVIEW METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials assessing patients with acute and sub-acute low back pain were included. Two reviewers independently screened relevant studies using the same inclusion criteria. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database and the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews tool were used to grade the quality assessment of randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews, respectively. The final recommendation grades were based on the consensus discussion results of the Delphi of 22 international experts. RESULTS: Twenty-one systematic reviews and 21 randomized controlled trials were included. Spinal manipulative therapy and low-level laser therapy are recommended for acute low back pain. Core stability exercise/motor control, spinal manipulative therapy, and massage can be used to treat sub-acute low back pain. CONCLUSIONS: The consensus statements provided medical staff with appliable recommendations of physical therapy for acute and sub-acute low back pain. This consensus statement will require regular updates after 5-10 years.

Background: Astragalus membranaceus (AM) shows promise as a therapeutic agent for osteoarthritis (OA), a debilitating condition with high disability rates. OA exacerbation is linked to chondrocyte ferroptosis, yet the precise pharmacological mechanisms of AM remain unclear. Methods: We validated AM's protective efficacy in an anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) mouse model of OA. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP) database was utilized to identify AM's active components and their targets. FerrDb (a database for regulators and markers of ferroptosis and ferroptosis-disease associations) pinpointed ferroptosis-related targets, while GeneCards, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), Pharmacogenomics Knowledgebase (PharmGKB), Therapeutic Target Database (TTD), and DrugBank sourced OA-related genes. Molecular docking analysis further validated these targets. Ultimately, the validation of the results was accomplished through in vitro experiments. Results: AM exhibited anabolic effects and suppressed catabolism in OA chondrocytes. Network pharmacology identified 19 common genes, and molecular docking suggested quercetin, an AM constituent, interacts with key proteins like HO-1 and NRF2 to inhibit chondrocyte ferroptosis. In vitro experiments confirmed AM's ability to modulate the NRF2/HO-1 pathway via quercetin, mitigating chondrocyte ferroptosis. Conclusion: This study elucidates how AM regulates chondrocyte ferroptosis, impacting OA progression, providing a theoretical basis and experimental support for AM's scientific application.

This study presents an electrolysis system utilizing a novel self-circulation process of sulfate (SO42-) and persulfate (S2O82-) ions based on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and an activated carbon fiber (ACF) cathode, which is designed to enable electrochemical remediation of environmental contaminants with reduced use of chemical reagents and minimized residues. The production of S2O82- and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the BDD anode and ACF cathode, respectively, is identified as the source of active radicals for the contaminant degradation. The initiator, sulfate, is identified by comparing the degradation efficiency in NaSO4 and NaNO3 electrolytes. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirmed that the SO4-· and ·OH generated on the ACF cathode are the main reactive radicals. A comparison of the degradation efficiency and the generated S2O82-/H2O2 of the divided/undivided electrolysis system is used to demonstrate the superiority of the synergistic effect between the BDD anode and ACF cathode. This work provides evidence of the effectiveness of the philosophy of "catalysis in lieu of supplementary chemical agents" and sheds light on the mechanism of the generation and transmission of reactive species in the BDD and ACF electrolysis system, thereby offering new perspectives for the design and optimization of electrolysis systems.

Paclitaxel resistance is associated with a poor prognosis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, and currently, there is no promising drug for paclitaxel resistance. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the chemoresistance in human NSCLC-derived cell lines. We constructed paclitaxel-resistant NSCLC cell lines (A549/PR and H460/PR) by long-term exposure to paclitaxel. We found that triptolide, a diterpenoid epoxide isolated from the Chinese medicinal herb Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F, effectively enhanced the sensitivity of paclitaxel-resistant cells to paclitaxel by reducing ABCB1 expression in vivo and in vitro. Through high-throughput sequencing, we identified the SHH-initiated Hedgehog signaling pathway playing an important role in this process. We demonstrated that triptolide directly bound to HNF1A, one of the transcription factors of SHH, and inhibited HNF1A/SHH expression, ensuing in attenuation of Hedgehog signaling. In NSCLC tumor tissue microarrays and cancer network databases, we found a positive correlation between HNF1A and SHH expression. Our results illuminate a novel molecular mechanism through which triptolide targets and inhibits HNF1A, thereby impeding the activation of the Hedgehog signaling pathway and reducing the expression of ABCB1. This study suggests the potential clinical application of triptolide and provides promising prospects in targeting the HNF1A/SHH pathway as a therapeutic strategy for NSCLC patients with paclitaxel resistance. Phytochemical investigation on the aerial parts of Corydalis impatiens (pall.) Fisch (Papaveraceae) resulted in the identification of four previous undescribed benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, impatienines A-D (1-4), together with 14 known analogues (5-18). The structures of these compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis (IR, HR-ESIMS, 1D- and 2D-NMR) as well as ECD calculations. All the compounds obtained were investigated for their inhibitory effect on the growth of A549, H1299 and HepG2 cancer cells. Compounds 7 and 15 exhibited pronounced inhibition against the A549 cancer cells with IC50 values of 6.81 µM and 3.17 µM, while the positive control cisplatin was 1.83 µM. Compounds 1-3 showed moderate inhibitory on the H1299 cancer cells. Compounds 4, 10-12, and 16 showed signiffcant activity against HepG2 cancer cells with IC50 values range of 4.41-8.75 µM.

Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease, and its treatment is a core problem and challenge in clinical practice. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are the first-line therapy for the treatment of asthma. Local and systemic adverse reactions caused by GCs create obstacles to the treatment of asthma. Therefore, the research target is to find a new, safe, and effective therapeutic medicine at present. Natural products are an important source for treating asthma with low cost and low toxicity. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) is an active ingredient of traditional Chinese medicine Astragalus mongholicus Bunge. Previous studies have indicated that AS-IV plays a therapeutic role in the treatment of asthma by inhibiting airway inflammation and remodeling the airway, and by regulating immunity and neuroendocrine function (Fig. 1) . It has a variety of biological characteristics such as multi-target intervention, high safety, and good curative effect. This article reviews the specific mechanism of AS-IV for the treatment of asthma to provide references for subsequent research.

Four previously undescribed diastereomeric lignan glycosides, namely cistadesertosides B-E (1-4) were isolated from the stems of cultural Cistanche deserticola in Tarim desert. The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses, including IR, HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, circular dichroism (CD) data and chemical degradation. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of the isolates was also investigated. It showed that compounds 3 and 4 exhibited potential effects with IC50 values of 21.17 µM and 26.97 µM, respectively (positive control quercetin, IC50 , 10.01 µM).

Liver cancer is a common malignant tumor, and its incidence is increasing yearly. Millions of people suffer from liver cancer annually, which has a serious impact on global public health security. Licochalcone A (Lico A), an important component of the traditional Chinese herb licorice, is a natural small molecule drug with multiple pharmacological activities. In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of Lico A on hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines (HepG2 and Huh-7), and explored the inhibitory mechanism of Lico A on hepatocellular carcinoma. First, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of Lico A on hepatocellular carcinoma, and showed that Lico A significantly inhibited and killed HepG2 and Huh-7 cells in vivo and in vitro. Transcriptomic analysis showed that Lico A inhibited the expression of solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11), which induced ferroptosis. We confirmed through in vivo and in vitro experiments that Lico A promoted ferroptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma cells by downregulating SLC7A11 expression, thereby inhibiting the glutathione (GSH)-glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) pathway and inducing activation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we suggest that Lico A is a potential SLC7A11 inhibitor that induces ferroptotic death in hepatocellular carcinoma cells, thereby providing a theoretical basis for the development of natural small molecule drugs against hepatocellular carcinoma.

This study investigated the composition of Tartary buckwheat oil fermented by Monascus purpureus and extracted under supercritical CO2 conditions (FTBO) and evaluated its effects on lipid-lowering, inflammation modulation, and gut microbial regulation in mice that were fed a high-fat diet (MOD). Compared with the raw oil (TBO), the γ-oryzanol content reached 27.09 mg g-1; the monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) content (such as oleic acid and palmitic acid) was elevated; and the antioxidant capacities of DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl were improved in FTBO (p < 0.0001). Then, supplementation with FTBO had a remarkable effect on reducing the body weight and visceral obesity as well as alleviating hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, inflammatory reactions, and liver damage. The TC, TG, and LDL-C levels in the liver and plasma were reduced, and the HDL-C levels in the liver were increased (p < 0.05). In particular, the high-dose group (FTBOH) exhibited the most significant effect on reducing the pro-inflammatory cytokines ET, TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in the liver, which were 18.85, 570.12, 50.47, and 26.22 pg mL-1, respectively (p < 0.05). Moreover, FTBO reversed intestinal disorders and increased the intestinal microbial diversity and richness. The relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Limosilactobacillus, and Lachnospiraceae_UCG-006, were increased, and the relative abundance of the harmful bacteria Staphylococcus and Lachnoclostridium were reduced. In summary, FTBO has potential applications as a dietary supplement or dietary modifier in lowering blood lipids, modulating immune activity, and reversing intestinal disorders. This study provides reference guidance for the subsequent industrialization and development of Tartary buckwheat, the extension of the industrial chain, the development of new products, and the extraction of functional components.

In this study, the co-digestion system with Navel orange residues (NOR) and Waste activated sludge (WAS) was established, by pre-treating the NOR and setting different volatile solids (VS) ratios of NOR to WAS to motivate the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA). The pre-treatment method (pH 7 and temperature 70 °C) promoted the release of dissolved organic matter, and the concentration of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) increased by 45.56% compared with the untreated group (pH 3 and temperature 20 °C). In the co-digestion system, the highest VFA yield (5716.69 mg/L) was obtained at VS ratio of 2. When the VS ratio was increased to 4, the imbalance in proportions of carbon and nitrogen affected VFA production, and the high concentration of essential oils (EO) present in the NOR inhibited the methane production; the cumulative yield of methane gas decreased by 24.10% compared with the yield obtained when the VS ratio was 2. Analysis of microbial community revealed that an increase in the number of VFA-producing microbial populations and the abundance of Methanobacteria resulted in the accumulation of acetic acid. This study demonstrated that co-digestion of NOR with WAS improve VFA production, thus realizing the utilization of solid wastes and reducing environmental pollution.

Most patients with COPD have a combination of abdominal distension, which has been shown to adversely affect pulmonary symptoms, frequency of acute exacerbations, and quality of life in patients with COPD. Warm acupuncture and moxibustion have been shown to be effective in relieving symptoms in patients with COPD combined with abdominal distention. Warm acupuncture and moxibustion are highly effective, easy to perform, and inexpensive forms of traditional Chinese medicine treatments. The standardized practice of warm acupuncture and moxibustion is very important for the treatment of COPD combined with abdominal distension. The specific steps include selecting the appropriate acupoints for needling through syndrome differentiation treatment and selecting moxa sticks of appropriate length for moxibustion for about 30 min after the De-qi. The course of treatment lasts for one week. The following indicators are specifically assessed: the score of the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and the abdominal distension visual analog scale (VAS). This article will clearly illustrate how to standardize the manipulation of warm acupuncture and moxibustion to relieve COPD combined with abdominal distention.

Objective: The present investigation aims to conduct a comprehensive examination of the infection prevention and control efforts in hospitals of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps designated for COVID-19 treatment. Methods: By searching the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Chinese Academic Journal, Full Text Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), VIP Chinese Scientific, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database (CECDB), and using Review Manager 5.2 software, the quality assessment, data extraction, and meta-analysis were carried out for the included literature. Results: Between both the experimental and the control groups, there was a statistically significant difference in the level of public awareness of COVID-19 prevention and control [OR = 1.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.31, 1.99), P < .00001, I2 = 32%, Z = 4]; public concern about COVID-19 prevention and control [OR = 1.56, 95% CI (1.28, 1.90), P < .0001, I2 = 0%, Z = 4.35]; public anxiety on COVID-19 prevention and control [OR = 1.67, 95% CI (1.37, 2.03), P < .00001, I2 = 32%, Z = 5.13]. Conclusion: Chinese prophylaxis and controlling measures for COVID-19 are mainly to protect vulnerable populations, cut off transmission routes, and control the source of infection. Therefore, we must also do our best to prevent and control novel coronavirus pneumonia to protect our health and reduce the burden on our country.

Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been widely used in the clinic to save the dying life for over several thousand years. However, the medicinal components of Fuzi in treating vascular senescence (VS) and its potential mechanism remain unclear. In this study, a network pharmacology method was used to explore the possible components and further validated by experiments to get a candidate compound, deoxyandrographolide (DA). DA restrains aging biomarkers, such as p16, p21, γH2A.X, and p53 in vitro and in vivo blood co-culture studies. Histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1), mouse double minute2 (MDM2), cyclin-dependent kinase 4, and mechanistic target of rapamycin kinase (mTOR) are predicted to be the possible targets of DA based on virtual screening. Subsequent bio-layer interferometry results indicated that DA showed good affinity capability with HDAC1. DA enhances the protein expression of HDAC1 in the angiotensin II-induced senescence process by inhibiting its ubiquitination degradation. Loss of HDAC1 by CRISPR/Cas9 leads to the disappearance of DA's anti-aging property. The enhancement of HDAC1 represses H3K4me3 (a biomarker of chromosomal activity) and improves chromosome stability. RNA sequencing results also confirmed our hypothesis. Our evidence illuminated that DA may achieve as a novel compound in the treatment of VS by improving chromosome stability.

Black soldier fly (BSF) and thermophilic composting (TC) treatments are commonly adopted to manage food waste. In this study, 30 days of TC of food waste following seven days BSF pretreatment (BC) was compared to 37 days of TC of food waste (TC, the control). Fluorescence spectrum and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis were used to compare the BC and TC treatments. Results showed that BC could decrease protein-like substances and increase humus substances more quickly, and that the humification index of compost products was 106.8% higher than that of TC, suggesting that the humification process was accelerated by BSF pretreatment resulting in a 21.6% shorter maturity time. Meanwhile, the concentrations of total and available phosphorus rose from 7.2 and 3.3 g kg-1 to 44.2 and 5.5 g kg-1, respectively, which were 90.5% and 118.8% higher in compost products from BC as compared to those in TC. Furthermore, BC had higher richness and diversity of humus synthesis and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), with Nocardiopsis (53.8%) and Pseudomonas (47.0%) being the dominant PSB. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the introduction of BSF gut bacteria contributed to the effectiveness of related functional bacteria, resulting in a rapid humification process and phosphorus activation. Our findings advance understanding of the humification process and provide novel perspectives on food waste management.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease with subtle onset, early diagnosis remains challenging. Accumulating evidence suggests that the emergence of retinal damage in AD precedes cognitive impairment, and may serve as a critical indicator for early diagnosis and disease progression. Salvianolic acid B (Sal B), a bioactive compound isolated from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Salvia miltiorrhiza, has been shown promise in treating neurodegenerative diseases, such as AD and Parkinson's disease. In this study we investigated the therapeutic effects of Sal B on retinopathy in early-stage AD. One-month-old transgenic mice carrying five familial AD mutations (5×FAD) were treated with Sal B (20 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.g.) for 3 months. At the end of treatment, retinal function and structure were assessed, cognitive function was evaluated in Morris water maze test. We showed that 4-month-old 5×FAD mice displayed distinct structural and functional deficits in the retinas, which were significantly ameliorated by Sal B treatment. In contrast, untreated, 4-month-old 5×FAD mice did not exhibit cognitive impairment compared to wild-type mice. In SH-SY5Y-APP751 cells, we demonstrated that Sal B (10 µM) significantly decreased BACE1 expression and sorting into the Golgi apparatus, thereby reducing Aß generation by inhibiting the ß-cleavage of APP. Moreover, we found that Sal B effectively attenuated microglial activation and the associated inflammatory cytokine release induced by Aß plaque deposition in the retinas of 5×FAD mice. Taken together, our results demonstrate that functional impairments in the retina occur before cognitive decline, suggesting that the retina is a valuable reference for early diagnosis of AD. Sal B ameliorates retinal deficits by regulating APP processing and Aß generation in early AD, which is a potential therapeutic intervention for early AD treatment.

Low-quality sleep in patients with insomnia is closely related to sleep architecture imbalance and neurotransmitter impairment. Acupuncture may reduce the duration of light sleep and its proportion, increase the time of deep sleep and rapid- eye-movement sleep as well as their proportions so as to modulate the sleep architecture for insomnia. The paper summarized the related studies of acupuncture for improving sleep architecture through regulating serotonin, norephinephrine, dopamine, γ-aminobutyric acid, acetylcholine and orexin; and explored the effects of acupuncture on the neurotransmitters and their specific performance in regulating sleep architecture. It is anticipated that the review may provide the literature evidences of acupuncture for improving sleep quality in patients with insomnia, and the approaches to the mechanism research of acupuncture for regulating sleep architecture.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is garnering increasing empirical interest as an intervention for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), although no studies of mindfulness as a standalone treatment have included a sample composed entirely of patients with BDD or a comparison group. The aim of this study was to investigate the improvement of MBCT intervention on the core symptoms, emotional dysfunction, and executive function of BDD patients, as well as the feasibility and acceptability of MBCT training. METHOD: Patients with BDD were randomized into an 8-week MBCT group (n = 58) or treatment-as-usual (TAU) control group (n = 58) and were assessed at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: Participants who received MBCT showed greater improvement on self-reported and clinician ratings of BDD symptoms, self-reported emotion dysregulation symptoms and executive function compared with TAU participants. Improvement for executive function tasks was partially supported. In addition, feasibility and acceptability of MBCT training were positive. LIMITATIONS: There is no systematic assessment of the severity of key potential outcome variables associated with BDD. CONCLUSION: MBCT may be a useful intervention for patients with BDD, improving patients' BDD symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and executive functioning.
