Background: To evaluate the associations between long-term oral Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) and recurrence and metastasis (R&M) in patients with stage II and III colorectal cancer (CRC). Furthermore, we aimed to determine the correlation between different syndrome patterns and prognosis and summarized the regularities among CHMs prescriptions, providing reference for clinical practice. Methods: An ambispective cohort study was conducted. All CRC patients who sought evaluation and treatment at Xiyuan Hospital and Beijing Cancer Hospital from August 2014 to August 2016 were included. In this study, "whether patients voluntarily take CHMs" was taken as the exposure factor, and the exposure degree was "the duration of CHM use." Stratification was performed according to the duration of TCM use to determine the relationship with R&M of CRC. The primary outcome was disease-free survival. Patients who had R&M of CRC after taking CHMs for ≥6 months were defined as "worst patients." R software was used for statistical analysis. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to determine the prognosis. IBM SPSS was used to model a priori association rules; drug use rules were analyzed on this basis. Results: A total of 186 patients with stage II and III CRC after radical resection were enrolled. All patients reached the study endpoint by August 2021. The difference in disease-free survival between the two groups was most significant when the cutoff value for CHMs was 18 months (P = 0.0012). Multivariate analysis showed that 18 CHMs were independent protective factors for R&M of CRC (P = 0.001, HR = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.08-0.53). The ratio of Pi (spleen) and Shen (kidney) deficiency in the worst cases was higher than patients without R&M (P = 0.018). Sijunzi and Liuwei Dihuang decoctions were the most frequently used prescriptions in the anti-R&M phase. Conclusion: CHMs complying with the "Jianpi Bushen" principle may attenuate the risk of R&M in patients with stage II and III CRC. Pi (spleen) and Shen (kidney) deficiency in patients receiving TCM intervention for the first time within 6 months of radical resection may be associated with a higher CRC R&M rate. Further research is warranted to validate these findings and elucidate underlying biological mechanisms.

The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of selenium yeast (Se-Y) against hepatotoxicity induced by ochratoxin A (OTA). The OTA-induced liver injury model was established in chickens by daily oral gavage of 50 µg/kg OTA for 21 days. Serum biochemistry analysis, antioxidant analysis, as well as the qRT-PCR and Western blot (WB) analyses were then used to evaluate oxidative damage and apoptosis in chicken liver tissue. The results showed that Se-Y significantly increased liver coefficient induced by OTA (P < 0.05). OTA + Se-Y treated group revealed that Se-Y reduced the OTA-induced increase in glutamic pyruvic transaminase (ALT), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (AST) and malonaldehyde (MDA) content, and reversed the decrease in antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) (P < 0.05). In this study, we found that OTA is involved in the mRNA expression levels about Nrf2/Keap1 and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways, such as oxidative stress-related genes (Nrf2, GSH-Px, GLRX2 and Keap1) and apoptosis-related genes (Bax, Caspase3, P53, AKT, PI3K and Bcl-2). Besides, significant downregulations of protein expression of HO-1, MnSOD, Nrf2 and Bcl-2, as well as a significant upregulation of Caspase3 and Bax levels were observed after contaminated with OTA (P < 0.05). Notably, OTA-induced apoptosis and oxidative damage in the liver of chickens were reverted back to normal level in the OTA + Se-Y group. Our findings indicate that pretreatment with Se-Y effectively ameliorates OTA-induced hepatotoxicity.

In order to develop an artificially constructed plant community plot for the enhanced phytoremediation of uranium contaminated soils, three uranium accumulators including Bamboo-willow (Salix sp.), Paspalum scrobiculatum linn and Macleaya cordata were used to construct four artificial plant community plots, and greenhouse experiments were conducted to investigate the bioaccumulation of uranium by the plants and the organic acid content, enzyme activity, and the change of microbial community structure in their rhizosphere soils. The transfer factor (TF) and the total bioaccumulation amount (TBA) of uranium were used to describe remediation efficiencies in this paper. It was found that their remediation efficiencies were in the order Bamboo-willow (Salix sp.)-Paspalum scrobiculatum linn-Macleaya cordata > Bamboo-willow (Salix sp.)-Macleaya cordata > Paspalum scrobiculatum linn-Macleaya cordata > Bamboo-willow (Salix sp.)-Paspalum scrobiculatum linn. The bioaccumulation amount of uranium by each plant in the Bamboo-willow (Salix sp.)-Paspalum scrobiculatum linn-Macleaya cordata community plot was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that by its single population, the bioaccumulation amounts of uranium by Bamboo-willow (Salix sp.), Paspalum scrobiculatum linn and Macleaya cordata were 0.29, 0.32 and 2.19 mg/plant, respectively, and they were increased by 31.82%, 77.78% and 146.07%, respectively, and the transfer efficiencies by the plants were increased by 150%, 110% and 52.17%, respectively. The interaction between the plants' roots and the microorganisms in the rhizosphere soil of the Bamboo-willow (Salix sp.)-Paspalum scrobiculatum linn-Macleaya cordata community plot resulted in the high content of organic acids such as oxalic acid in the rhizosphere soil of the plant community plot, which was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of its single population. The chelation of the organic acids with uranium led to an increase in the proportion of exchangeable uranium in soil solution. In addition, Burkholderia, which is an iron-producing carrier bacterium and can increase the uptake and accumulation of uranium by plants, and Leptolyngbya, which is a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria and can increase the biomass of plants, emerged in the rhizosphere soil of the plant community plot. These may be the mechanisms by which the phytoremediation of the uranium contaminated soils was enhanced by the plant community plot.

Proton resonance frequency shift (PRFS) MR thermometry is commonly used to measure temperature in thermotherapy. The method requires a baseline temperature map and is therefore motion sensitive. Several referenceless MR thermometry methods were proposed to address this problem but their performances have never been compared. This study compared the performance of five referenceless methods through simulation, heating of ex vivo tissues and in vivo imaging of the brain and liver of healthy volunteers. Mean, standard deviation, root mean square, 2/98 percentiles of error were used as performance metrics. Probability density functions (PDF) of the error distribution for these methods in the different tests were also compared. The results showed that the phase gradient method (PG) exhibited largest error in all scenarios. The original method (ORG) and the complex field estimation method (CFE) had similar performance in all experiments. The phase finite difference method (PFD) and the near harmonic method (NH) were better than other methods, especially in the lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and fast changing field cases. Except for PG, the PDFs of each method were very similar among the different experiments. Since phase unwrapping in ORG and NH is computationally demanding and subject to image SNR, PFD and CFE would be good choices as they do not need phase unwrapping. The results here would facilitate the choice of appropriate referenceless methods in various MR thermometry applications.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the therapeutic efficacy of patients with neonatal ABO hemolytic disease treated with introvenous immunoglobin G (IVIG) by different modes of administration. METHODS: Ninety-three in patients with neonatal ABO hemolytic disease treated in our hospital were divided into group A (31 cases), B(31 cases) and C (31 cases). Based on basic treatment, the patients in group A were treated by a single high dose of IVIG (1 g/kg), patients in group B were treated by multiple low-dose of IVIG (0.5 g/kg), and the patients in group C treated by placebo without IVIG used as controls. The phototherapy time, jaundice time in 3 groups were observed; the total bilirubin levels in 3 groups were compared before and after treatment; the incidence of anemia, the rate of blood transfusion and the occurrence of bilirubin encephalopathy were compared after treatment between 3 groups. RESULTS: The phototherapy time, jaundice time in group A were statistically significantly shorter than those in the group B and C (P<0.05), but there was not statistical significantly difference between group B and C(P>0.05). Before treatment, serum TBIL level in 3 groups was not significantly different (P>0.05); and after treatment for 24 h and 48 h, the serum TBIL levels in group A were significantly lower than that in group B and C (P<0.05); after treatment for 72 h, the serum TBIL level in group A was all lower than 34.2 µmol/L; before treatment, Hb levels in 3 groups were not significantly different (P>0.05); Hb level in group A was significantly higher than that in group B and C after treatment for 24 h, 48 h and 72 h (P<0.05). The incidence of anemia in group A after treatment was significantly lower than that in group B and C, and that in group B significantly lower than that in group C(P<0.05). The rate of blood transfusion in group A was significantly lower than that in the group B and C (P<0.05); the rate of blood transfusion was not statistically significantly different between group B and C(P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The single high dose of IVIG infusion can effectively reduce the serum TBIL level, shorten treatment time and reduce the incidence of anemia and blood transfusion, so the therapeutic efficacy is significantly improved.

A new alkaloid was isolated from the leaves of Macleaya cordata with 95% ethanol extracted and its isolation was by column chromatography and preparation HPLC. The new structure was elucidated as 6'-hydroxy-2',3'-dimethoxyarnottianamide on the basis of its spectroscopic date.

In order to improve the soil environment, reduce soil erosion and soil nutrient loss, and explore the suitable dry broadcasting rate of polyacrylamide (PAM) in sloped apple orchard, experiments of different dry broadcasting rates of polyacrylamide were carried out in apple orchards with a slope of 20° in the hilly-gully region of northern Shaanxi from 2010 to 2012. PAM treatment levels included 0, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 g·m-2. Surface runoff, eroded sediment, soil nutrient loss, and the growth of apple trees were monitored. Results showed that the surface runoff and runoff yield times from May to July exhibited a "V" shape with the increase of PAM application rate, and reached a minimum at the 1.0 g·m-2 level. However, the sediment yield decreased with increasing the PAM application rate. The concentrations of the ammonium nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium in surface runoff and sediment decreased with increa-sing the PAM application rate. PAM significantly reduced the content of nitrate nitrogen in surface runoff, whereas it had no significant effect on nitrate nitrogen in sediment. Organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total potassium in the sediment decreased with increasing the PAM application rate. Moreover, PAM improved average fruit mass and fruit yields in sloped orchards, but it had no significant effect on the growth of apple trees and apple fruit flavor. An application le-vel of PAM at 1.0 g·m-2 should be suitable in sloped apple orchards.

OBJECTIVE: To study the curative effect of Zhiyang Pingfu Liquid (ZPL) in treating epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRIs) associated adverse reactions of the skin. METHODS: All 54 patients with pathologically confirmed malignant tumor had EGFRIs induced adverse reactions of the skin to various degrees. ZPL was externally applied for them all, once or twice per day, 14 days consisting of one therapeutic course. Changes of adverse skin reactions, time for symptoms relief, adverse skin reaction types suitable for ZPL were observed before and after treatment. RESULTS: EGFRIs associated skin adverse reactions were improved to various degrees after they used ZPL. The shortest symptoms relief time was 1 day while the longest was 12 days, with an average of 6.93 days and the median time 7 days. Compared with before treatment, itching, rash/scaling, acne/acneform eruptions were obviously improved (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: ZPL could alleviate EGFRls associated adverse skin reactions, especially showed better effect on itching, rash/scaling, acne/acneform eruptions.

Proton resonance frequency shift-based MR thermometry is a promising temperature monitoring approach for thermotherapy but its accuracy is vulnerable to inter-scan motion. Model-based referenceless thermometry has been proposed to address this problem but phase unwrapping is usually needed before the model fitting process. In this paper, a referenceless MR thermometry method using phase finite difference that avoids the time consuming phase unwrapping procedure is proposed. Unlike the previously proposed phase gradient technique, the use of finite difference in the new method reduces the fitting error resulting from the ringing artifacts associated with phase discontinuity in the calculation of the phase gradient image. The new method takes into account the values at the perimeter of the region of interest because of their direct relevance to the extrapolated baseline phase of the region of interest (where temperature increase takes place). In simulation study, in vivo and ex vivo experiments, the new method has a root-mean-square temperature error of 0.35 °C, 1.02 °C and 1.73 °C compared to 0.83 °C, 2.81 °C, and 3.76 °C from the phase gradient method, respectively. The method also demonstrated a slightly higher, albeit small, temperature accuracy than the original referenceless MR thermometry method. The proposed method is computationally efficient (~0.1 s per image), making it very suitable for the real time temperature monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: To observe clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture (EA) for post-stroke urinary incontinence in patients. METHODS: A total of 111 stroke inpatients with urinary incontinence were randomly divided into EA group (n = 56) and control group (n = 55). Patients of the control group were treated by administration of calcium ion antagon, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, angiotensin II receptor antagonist, compound thromb-clearing agent (i.v.), etc.,and acupuncture of Jianyu (LI 15), Xuehai (SP 10), etc. Patients of the EA group were treated by EA of bilateral Shenshu (BL 23), Huiyang (BL 35), etc., combined with the treatment as the control group. The treatment was conducted once daily for 4 weeks. Crooks (1995) Scores of the clinical symptoms and clinical efficacy assessment were given before and after the treatment. RESULTS: After the treatment, the severity of urinary incontinence and symptom scores in both control and EA groups were decreased significantly in comparison with pre-treatment (P < 0.01). Following the treatment, of the 55 and 56 stroke patients in the control and EA groups, 0 and 4 (7.1%) were cured in the symptoms of frequent micturition, urgency of micturition and incontinence of urine, 20 (36.4%) and 35 (62.5%) were effective, 35 (63.6%) and 17 (30.4%) were invalid, with the effective rates being 36.4% and 69.6%, respectively. The therapeutic effect of EA group was apparently superior to that of the control group (P < 0.01). In addition, the infection rate of the EA group was strikingly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: EA can lower the severity of urinary incontinence and improve clinical symptoms of micturition in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Melamine is an industrial chemical used primarily as plastics stabilizer and fire retardant. On September 11, 2008, melamine-contaminated milk products were reported to be responsible for urinary tract calculi in infants and children in China. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, lesions, risk factors, clinical features, and management of children fed with the melamine-contaminated milk products. METHODS: A total of 15 577 infants and children fed with the milk products were screened at our hospital. Ultrasonography was performed in all the infants and children. For those found with urinary tract calculion ultrasonography, urnalysis was done. Among them, 846 with detailed data screened from September 17 to 25 were enrolled for further analysis in this study. They were divided into calculus group (326 children) and non-calculus group (520 children) according to the results of ultrasonography. They included 429 boys and 417 girls, aged from 1 month to 5 years (median, 18 months). Their clinical and laboratory data, ultrasonograms, and treatment results were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 15 577 children screened, 562 (3.61%) had urinary tract calculi. The rate was closely related to the melamine concentration in patients fed with formula. In 846 children with detailed data enrolled in this analysis, weight and head circumference Z scores in the calculus group were lower than those in the non-calculus group (P=0.048, P=0.046). Long duration of formula feeding, high melamine contained formula, and minimal water intake were the risk factors for calculi (P<0.05, respectively). Of 326 children with calculi, 281 had small calculiless than 0.5 cm in diameter, 227 had multiple calculi, and 34 had urinary tract distention. Moreover, diffuse renal lesions, renal failure and ascites were noted in 4, 3 and 2 patients, respectively. After 1-month treatment with sodium bicarbonate and Chinese traditional medicine, calculi disappeared in 49 of 54 outpatients. In 41 inpatients, 5 had calculi removed operatively and 36 had calculi minimized. CONCLUSIONS: Melamine-contaminated milk products induced urinary tract calculi, which have a good response to conservative therapy. Long-term follow-up of infants and children fed with melamine-contaminated milk products is required, and food safety should be supervised increasingly for the health of children.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the curative effect of long-time retention of scalp needle in the treatment of vascular dementia (VD) patients, and its influence on P300. METHODS: Sixty-five cases of VD patients were randomly divided into acupuncture group (n = 33) and medication group (n = 32). For patients of acupuncture group, Duxil tablets were taken orally, scalp-points Dingzhongxian (MS 5), Ezhongxian (MS 1) and bilateral Dingpangxian I (MS 8) were punctured separately with the filiform needles retained for 10 h, once daily for 8 weeks. Patients of medication group were asked to take Duxil tablets orally, one tablet/time, twice daily for 8 weeks. Mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Hastgawa dementia scale (HDS) were used to evaluate the patients' abilities of orientation, calculation, immediate and remote memory and speech. Activity of Daily Living (ADL) Scale was used to evaluate their daily life ability. The latency and amplitude of event-related potential P300 of electroencephalograph (EEG) were analyzed before and after the treatment. RESULTS: After the treatment, of the 33 and 32 cases in acupuncture and medication groups, the controlled, markedly effective, effective and ineffective cases were 2 and 1, 9 and 4, 18 and 16, 4 and 11, respectively; with the total effective rates being 87.88% and 68.75% separately. The total effective rate of acupuncture group was obviously higher than that of medication group. Self-comparison showed that MMSE and HDS scores of both acupuncture and medication groups increased significantly in comparison with their individual pre-treatment values (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), while ADL of both groups decreased significantly (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Before treatment, compared with normal people, the latencies of P300 in two groups increased significantly (P < 0.01), while the amplitudes of two groups decreased significantly (P < 0.01). After the treatment, the situations of two groups were corrected apparently (P < 0.05). The effects of acupuncture group were significantly superior to those of medication group in MMSE, HDS and ADL scores and the latency of P300 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Long-term retention of scalp acupuncture needles can improve VD patients' intelligence, ADL ability and EEG.
