Background: The musculoskeletal system contains an extensive network of lymphatic vessels. Decreased lymph flow of the draining collecting lymphatics usually occurs in clinic after traumatic fractures. However, whether defects in lymphatic drainage can affect fracture healing is unclear. Methods: To investigate the effect of lymphatic dysfunction on fracture healing, we used a selective VEGFR3 tyrosine kinase inhibitor to treat tibial fractured mice for 5 weeks versus a vehicle-treated control. To ensure successfully establishing deceased lymphatic drainage model for fractured mice, we measured lymphatic clearance by near infrared indocyanine green lymphatic imaging (NIR-ICG) and the volume of the draining popliteal lymph nodes (PLNs) by ultrasound at the whole phases of fracture healing. In addition, hindlimb edema from day 0 to day 7 post-fracture, pain sensation by Hargreaves test at day 1 post-fracture, bone histomorphometry by micro-CT and callus composition by Alcian Blue-Hematoxylin/Orange G staining at day 14 post-fracture, and bone quality by biomechanical testing at day 35 post-fracture were applied to evaluate fracture healing. To promote fracture healing via increasing lymphatic drainage, we then treated fractured mice with anti-mouse podoplanin (PDPN) neutralizing antibody or isotype IgG antibody for 1 week to observe lymphatic drainage function and assess bone repair as methods described above. Results: Compared to vehicle-treated group, SAR-treatment group significantly decreased lymphatic clearance and the volume of draining PLNs. SAR-treatment group significantly increased soft tissue swelling, and reduced bone volume (BV)/tissue volume (TV), trabecular number (Tb.N), woven bone and biomechanical properties of fracture callus. In addition, anti-PDPN treated group significantly reduced the number of CD41+ platelets in PLNs and increased the number of pulsatile lymphatic vessels, lymphatic clearance and the volume of PLNs. Moreover, anti-PDPN treated group significantly reduced hindlimb edema and pain sensation and increased BV/TV, trabecular number (Tb.Th), woven bone and biomechanical properties of fracture callus. Conclusions: Inhibition of proper lymphatic drainage function delayed fracture healing. Use of a anti-PDPN neutralizing antibody reduced lymphatic platelet thrombosis (LPT), increased lymphatic drainage and improved fracture healing. The translational potential of this article: (1) We demonstrated lymphatic drainage function is crucial for fracture healing. (2) To unblock the lymphatic drainage and prevent the risk of bleeding and mortality by blood thinner, we demonstrated PDPN neutralizing antibody is a novel and safe way forward in the treatment of bone fracture healing by eliminating LPT and increasing lymphatic drainage.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a specific type of massage performed by specialists that aims to enhance the filling and emptying of lymph vessels, is often recommended as an essential part of a successful management strategy for lymphoedema. However, the literature on its efficacy is often contradictory, and its addition may not always be necessary. To ensure optimal understanding of practitioners and benefit to patients, Francesca Ramadan summarises the evidence-based advantages and limitations of MLD.

There is an association between sleep quality and glioma-specific outcomes, including survival. The critical role of sleep in survival among subjects with glioma may be due to sleep-induced activation of brain drainage (BD), that is dramatically suppressed in subjects with glioma. Emerging evidence demonstrates that photobiomodulation (PBM) is an effective technology for both the stimulation of BD and as an add-on therapy for glioma. Emerging evidence suggests that PBM during sleep stimulates BD more strongly than when awake. In this study on male Wistar rats, we clearly demonstrate that the PBM course during sleep vs. when awake more effectively suppresses glioma growth and increases survival compared with the control. The study of the mechanisms of this phenomenon revealed stronger effects of the PBM course in sleeping vs. awake rats on the stimulation of BD and an immune response against glioma, including an increase in the number of CD8+ in glioma cells, activation of apoptosis, and blockage of the proliferation of glioma cells. Our new technology for sleep-phototherapy opens a new strategy to improve the quality of medical care for patients with brain cancer, using promising smart-sleep and non-invasive approaches of glioma treatment.

A focus has been placed particularly on the description of breast abscesses (sthana vidradhi in Ayurveda terms). Breast inflammation known as mastitis has the potential to develop into a breastabscess in the future. The term "stana roga," refers to breast disorders and describes breast abscesses, is mentioned in the ancient works Sushruta Samhita, Madhava Nidana, and Bhavaprakasha. Breast abscesses are typically treated surgically by making an incision over the area of greatest fluctuation (or pain) and breaking the abscess septa with digits. For a few days, the abscess chamber is left untreated or gauze-packed, with dressing changes made as needed to facilitate wound granulation. The current report was aimed at management of the breast abscess through an integrated approach comprising surgical and medicinal intervetions as mentioned in Ayurveda classics. A 32-year-old female patient with pain and swelling in right breast was diagnosed with breast abscess in Shalya (Surgery) OPD and managed primarily by incision and drainage which was followed by regular dressing and ayurvedic medications which encouraged appreciable granulation in a short period of time with complete healing of the abscess. This case study presents the successful management of breast abscesses with both surgical & Ayurvedic management.

The accumulation and uptake efficiency of heavy metals, including As, Mn, and Cu, in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms) grown in synthetic acidic wastewater supplemented with sodium phytate (SP) was examined. Three treatments were studied using synthetic acidic wastewater containing 0.25, 5.0, and 1.0 mg/L of As, Mn, and Cu, respectively, (SM + heavy metals) and having pH in the range of 4-6, which comprised of (1) control treatments using SM + heavy metals at pH 4, 5, 6 without SP, and treatments using SM + heavy metals at pH 4, 5, 6 with SP: Cu (2) in a 1:3 M ratio and (3) a 1:6 M ratio. The translocation factor (TF < 1) indicated that plants had a lower capacity to transport heavy metals from the roots to the stems. The shoots of water hyacinth exhibited the highest capacity to absorb and store As in the pH 4-treatment with SP (SP:Cu1:3 mol), whereas the roots showed the greatest capacity at pH 4 without SP. The roots and shoots of the water hyacinth showed the greatest capacity to take up and store Mn in the pH 5-treatment with a 1:3 M ratio of SP:Cu. The roots showed the greatest capacity to take up and store Cu in the pH 6-treatment, and the shoots showed the highest capability in the pH 5-treatment with 1:3 M ratio of SP:Cu. Moreover, analysis of the chemical forms revealed that As accumulated in the arsenate form, whereas Mn accumulated in the divalent form.

High concentrations of metals and sulfates in acid mine drainage (AMD) are the cause of the severe environmental hazard that mining operations pose to the surrounding ecosystem. Little study has been conducted on the cost-effective biological process for treating high AMD. The current research investigated the potential of the proposed carbon source and sulfate reduction bacteria (SRB) culture in achieving the bioremediation of sulfate and heavy metals. This work uses individual and combinatorial bioaugmentation and bio-stimulation methods to bioremediate acid-mine-influenced groundwater in batch microcosm experiments. Bioaugmentation and bio-stimulation methods included pure culture SRB (Desulfovibrio vulgaris) and microsized oil droplet (MOD) by emulsifying corn oil. The research tested natural attenuation (T 1), bioaugmentation (T2), biostimulation (T3), and bioaugmentation plus biostimulation (T4) for AM-contaminated groundwater remediation. Bioaugmentation and bio-stimulation showed the greatest sulfate reduction (75.3%) and metal removal (95-99%). Due to carbon supply scarcity, T1 and T2 demonstrated 15.7% and 27.8% sulfate reduction activities. Acetate concentrations in T3 and T4 increased bacterial activity by providing carbon sources. Metal bio-precipitation was substantially linked with sulfate reduction and cell growth. SEM-EDS study of precipitates in T3 and T4 microcosm spectra indicated peaks for S, Cd, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Fe, indicating metal-sulfide association for metal removal precipitates. The MOD provided a constant carbon source for indigenous bacteria, while Desulfovibrio vulgaris increased biogenic sulfide synthesis for heavy metal removal.

BACKGROUND: Total knee joint replacement (TKR) is an effective method for the treatment of severe knee osteoarthritis. With an increasing number of surgeries, complications such as lower limb edema, pain, and limited mobility have caused a heavy burden. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) may be a solution to solve the problem. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of MLD in reducing knee edema, pain, and improving range of motion (ROM) in patients after TKR. METHODS: A search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, VIPs, WanFang database, and Google Scholar from inception to June 2023. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the effects of MLD and non-MLD (or another physiotherapy) on improving knee edema, pain, and ROM after TKR were included. Stata 16.0 was used for meta-analysis. GRADE was used to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS: In total, 7 RCTs with 285 patients were identified. There were no significant differences found in the ROM of knee flexion (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.03, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.22, 0.28, P = 0.812) and the ROM of knee extension (SMD= -0.30, 95%CI: -0.64, 0.04, P = 0.084). No differences were observed in the lower extremity circumference after TKR (SMD= -0.09, 95%CI: -0.27, 0.09, P = 0.324). For postoperative pain, there was no significant advantage between the MLD and non-MLD groups (SMD= -0.33, 95%CI: -0.71, 0.04, P = 0.083). CONCLUSIONS: Based on the current evidence from RCTs, manual lymphatic drainage is not recommended for the rehabilitation of patients following total knee replacement.

(1) Background: Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), included within the complex decongestive therapy, as a therapy for the treatment of lymphedema has raised controversy about its benefits for lymphedema after breast cancer. The aim of this research is to test the effects of MLD on lymphedema after breast cancer during the treatment maintenance phase. (2) Methods: A randomized, single-blinded, controlled crossover trial was conducted to analyze the effects of a manual lymphatic drainage intervention compared to a control group without MLD intervention for the treatment of lymphedema. Arm volume measured by circumference measurement, subcutaneous tissue thickness measured by ultrasound, and the sensation of pain, heaviness, and swelling were evaluated as outcome measures. (3) Results: For the control group, an increase in volume was found in some of the circumference and subcutaneous tissue thickness measurements, in addition to a worsening of arm pain, swelling and heaviness. (4) Conclusion: The absence of treatment based on MLD in lymphedema after breast cancer worsens volume measurements, as well as arm heaviness. Therefore, it would be advisable to carry out this type of therapy as part of the maintenance treatment for lymphedema in breast cancer.

Evapotranspiration is a key hydrological process for reducing stormwater runoff in bioretention systems, regardless of their physical configuration. Understanding the volumes of stormwater that can be returned to the atmosphere via evapotranspiration is, therefore, a key consideration in the design of any bioretention system. This study establishes the evapotranspiration dynamics of three common, structurally different, bioretention vegetation treatments (an Amenity Grass mix, and mono-cultures of Deschampsia cespitosa and Iris sibirica) compared with an un-vegetated control using lab-scale column experiments. Via continuous mass and moisture loss data, observed evapotranspiration rates were compared with those predicted by the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith model for five 14-day dry periods during Spring 2021, Summer 2021, and Spring 2022. Soil moisture reductions over the 14-day trials led to reduced rates of evapotranspiration. This necessitated the use of a soil moisture extraction function alongside a crop coefficient to represent actual evapotranspiration from FAO-56 Penman-Monteith reference evapotranspiration estimates. Crop coefficients (Kc) varied between 0.65 and 2.91, with a value of 1.0 identified as a recommended default value in the absence of treatment-specific empirical data. A continuous hydrological model with Kc=1.0 and a loading ratio of 10:1 showed that evapotranspiration could account for between 1 and 12% of the annual water budget for a bioretention system located in the UK and Ireland, increasing to a maximum of 35% when using the highest Kc observed (2.91).

In adults and teenagers, airway clearance physiotherapy techniques (ACPT) are various and numerous. However, they for still awaiting scientific validation. Among ACPTs, Slow Expiration with the Glottis Opened in the Lateral Posture (ELTGOL), Autogenic Drainage (DA), and Active Cycling Breathing Technique (ACBT) present a Grade B level of evidence with weak recommendations. Even though these maneuvers are widely applied, precise description of chest physiotherapy (CP) is largely absent from the scientific literature; it is difficult to standardize its implementation and reproduce the results; scientific validation and faithful execution of the techniques are consequently problematic. In this paper, the authors aim to depict each of the three CP techniques as precisely as possible; with this in mind, graphic modeling of the different respiratory exercises is presented in such a way that they can be easily learned, applied and reproduced by physiotherapists.

BACKGROUND: Complete decongestive therapy (CDT) is a conservative treatment for lymphedema that combines interventions and lifestyle changes. We evaluated the application of CDT after lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA) of the lower limb combined with liposuction. METHODS: A total of 55 patients who underwent LVA of the lower limb combined with liposuction from January 2021 to July 2022 were enrolled in the study. The patients were divided into groups A (n = 24) and B (n = 31) according to whether they adhered to CDT treatment during the 12-month follow-up. Group A was the non-adherence CDT group and Group B was the adherence CDT group. Lower Extremity Lymphedema Index (LELI) and Lymphoedema Functioning, Disability, and Health Questionnaire for Lower Limb Lymphoedema (Lymph-ICF-LL) were used as prognostic indicators to observe the remission of postoperative lymphedema symptoms in the two groups. RESULTS: At 6-month and 12-month follow-up, LELI and the score of Lymph-ICF-LL in group B and group A were lower than before the operation (p < .05). The circumference of the affected limb was reduced, and the quality of life was improved in both groups after the operation. The reduction of LELI and Lymph-ICF-LL in group B was higher than in group A, and the difference was statistically significant (p < .05). CONCLUSION: This study preliminarily proves the effectiveness of CDT after LVA of the lower limb combined with liposuction, which can maintain and strengthen the surgical effect. Further, CDT treatment is still needed after the operation, which is necessary to reduce the circumference of the affected limb and improve patients' quality of life.

The drainage system is a key measure for regulating runoff nutrient losses on sloping farmlands. Confluence and diverging drainage systems are two drainage layouts representing natural water network systems and are widely distributed in sloping farmlands; however, the effects of these drainage systems on runoff nutrient losses in the sloped plots remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of different drainage systems on the characteristics of runoff nitrogen (N) losses in sloped plots using laboratory rainfall simulations. Three treatments, including bare slope (without drainage system, CK), confluence drainage system (T1), and diverging drainage system (T2), were used to compare the changes in concentrations and losses of total nitrogen (TN), dissolved nitrogen (DN), and particulate nitrogen (PN), and the DN:TN ratio in runoff under a combination of 1.8 mm min-1 rainfall intensity and three slope gradients (5°, 10°, and 15°). The results showed that the time to runoff was significantly delayed in T2 compared with that in CK and T1 across all slopes (p < 0.05). Accumulated runoff depth was considerably lower in T1 and T2 than in CK across all slopes (p < 0.05). The TN and PN concentrations in T1 were markedly lower than those in T2 on the 10° and 15° slopes (p < 0.05). The DN concentration in T1 was lowest at the 5° slope (p < 0.05). TN loss in T1 was 14.7-33.9% and 17.9-30.3% lower than those in CK and T2 across all slopes, respectively (p < 0.05). The PN loss in T1 was 56.7% and 53.3% lower than that in T2 on the 10° and 15° slopes, respectively (p < 0.05). DN loss in T1 was 39.3-72.5% lower than that in CK for all slopes (p < 0.05). DN:TN in T2 was lower than that in CK and T1 at the 10° and 15° slopes (p < 0.05). Our results confirm the effectiveness of drainage systems in reducing runoff nutrient losses in a sloped plot and demonstrate that the confluence drainage system is better at reducing N losses in runoff than diverging drainage systems.

BACKGROUND: Persistent symptoms after SARS CoV-2 infection such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and cognitive dysfunction that cannot be explained by an alternative diagnosis have been termed long COVID and present a significant emerging public health problem. Current approaches include rehabilitation and symptom management involving multiple health disciplines and as yet there are no pharmaceutical approaches other than routine symptom management. Manual lymph drainage (MLD) has been used to support recovery during pulmonary rehabilitation and reduce chronic inflammation including symptoms associated with long COVID. CASE DESCRIPTION AND OUTCOMES: Two adult females who had reported long-COVID symptoms more than 10 weeks after the resolution of the acute infection were treated with MLD by Remedial Therapists trained in the Dr Vodder method of MLD. Respiratory function (Peak Flow Meter) and blood oxygen levels (Oximeter) were recorded before and after a one-minute sit-to-stand test prior to the treatment. The Dyspnea-12 Questionnaire, the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale, and Likert scales were used to collect client-reported outcomes. Six 45-min treatments were applied weekly, with a follow-up review and treatment at three months. In both cases, all outcomes improved after the third treatment with further improvement noted at three months. CONCLUSIONS: MLD may offer a non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical approach to the resolution of long-COVID symptoms such as cough, breathlessness, and fatigue.

BACKGROUND: The standard therapy for lymphedema of any origin is complex physical decongestive therapy (CDT). It comprises manual lymph drainage (MLD), compression therapy (CT), exercise therapy (ET), skincare, and patient education. Additionally, intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) can be applied. However, the contribution of MLD to decongestion is repeatedly questioned. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study re-analyzes a previous study during a 3-week decongestion period, comparing two different types of compression bandaging at the weekend. Sixty-one patients with unilateral breast cancer-related lymphedema were included. The patients received the same therapy (CDT + IPC) except for the different weekend compression bandaging. MLD was performed twice a day on weekdays. The volume of the affected arm was measured on days 1, 5, 8, 12, 15, 19, and 22. For the analysis, the data of both study groups were pooled. RESULTS: During the week, the patients showed a significant volume reduction (- 155.23 mL (week 1), - 101.02 mL (week 2), - 61.69 mL (week 3), respectively; p < 0.001 each) with a high effect size. On the weekends without MLD, they showed a slight, but also significant increase (12.08 mL (weekend 1), 8.36 mL (weekend 2), 4.33 mL (weekend 3), respectively; p < 0.001 each) with a medium effect size. CONCLUSIONS: We showed a strong effect of MLD on volume reduction. Differences from other studies are the larger study population and the more intensive application of MLD. If applied intensively, MLD is strongly decongestive during a 3-week decongestion therapy for breast cancer-related lymphedema.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to compare the effects of manual lymphatic drainage and soft tissue mobilization on pain threshold, shoulder mobility and quality of life in patients with axillary web syndrome. METHODS: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 36 breast cancer patients with developed axillary web; participants were randomly divided into two groups. One group was treated with manual lymphatic drainage; the other group was treated with soft tissue mobilizations in addition to therapeutic exercises, i.e., stretching, strengthening and range of motion (ROM) exercises. The duration of treatment was four weeks (5 sessions/week), with therapeutic exercises as a common treatment protocol. Outcome measures were Breast-Cancer specific quality of life questionnaires, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Patient Specific Functional Scale (PSFS), Dynamometer and Goniometer. All outcome measure readings were recorded at baseline and the end (4th week) of the treatment. RESULTS: The compliance of the variable distribution with normal distribution was verified using the Shaphiro-Wilk test. Parametric tests were applied, and both groups showed significant effects (p < 0.05) in pairwise comparison (paired t-test). The comparison group analysis (independent t-test) showed that there was no significant difference in pain, upper limb strength, range of motions and fatigue component of quality of life questionnaire parameters (p > 0.05). Two parameters (DASH, PSFS) and one component of the quality of life questionnaire (global health) showed a significant difference (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Manual lymphatic drainage showed more improvement in functional movements. It was concluded that both groups, manual lymphatic drainage and soft tissue mobilization groups were clinically equally effective. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: This trial is registered at ClinicalTrial.gov PRS under trial number NCT05463185 on date 18/07/2022.

Introduction: Breast engorgement (BE) is a problem that affects many women, especially in the first days of breastfeeding, producing inflammatory symptoms. Nonpharmacological therapies are inexpensive, safe, and can produce symptom relief. Objective: This study aims to analyze the safety of therapeutic ultrasound regarding possible risks of overheating and the effects of its use alone and associated with lymphatic drainage (LD) in women. Material and Methods: Effectiveness is measured through thermography, visual analog scale, and six-point scale of BE. This is a nonrandomized clinical trial with a sample of 34 in the ultrasound group (G1), 28 in the ultrasound and LD group (G2), and 37 in the control group (G3). Results: The mean reduction for engorgement was 1.3 ± 0.8 to G1, 1.4 ± 1.0 to G2, and 1.2 ± 0.9 to G3 according to the six-point scale. The mean reduction for pain level was 3.6 ± 2.1 to G1, 4.0 ± 3.1 to G2, and 4.0 ± 2.2 to G3 according to the visual analogue scale. Conclusion: It was observed that all therapies were effective in reducing the level of engorgement, according to the six-point scale. However, combined ultrasound and LD therapy has been shown to be more effective in reducing the level of pain. Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (RBR-6btb6zz).

Phosphorus (P) losses from tile-drained agricultural fields may degrade surface water quality by accelerating eutrophication. Among the different edge-of-field technologies, compact filter systems using different filter materials have been identified as potentially effective solutions for removing P from drainage water before discharge downstream. This study investigated the long-term (>696 days) P removal efficiency of 5 different filter materials in a column setup, using artificial drainage water (pH 6). Filter materials included two iron-based granulates (calcinated diatomaceous earth (CDE), ferric hydroxide granules (CFH)), and three calcium-based granulates (seashells, limestone, calcinated silicate/calcium oxide (Filtralite-P)). Experiments were performed under variable flow rates (0.037 and 1.52 L h-1; hydraulic retention time of 26-43 min and 18-30 h) and inlet P concentrations (0.14 and 0.7 mg L-1). An overall analysis revealed that the Fe-based materials achieved higher P retention than Ca-based materials. In particular, CFH was capable of retaining 99 and 98 % of the high and low inlet P concentrations, respectively. Conversely, limestone retained only 25 % of the high P load. CDE performed moderately well, independently of the inlet P concentration. Filtralite-P and Seashells performed well at high inlet P concentration but relatively poorly at low P concentration. The sensitivity of filter material P removal efficiency to variations in P loading was generally lowest for CFH and highest for limestone.

In this work, the plasmonic and photothermal effects of CuS nanoparticles biosynthesized from acid mine drainage (AMD) were studied. CuS were formed by delivering the H2S generated by a sulfidogenic bioreactor to an off-line system containing the AMD. The precipitates collected after contact for an hour were washed and physico-chemically characterized, showing a nanoparticle with a mean diameter of 33 nm, crystalline nature and semiconductor behavior with a direct band gap of 2.2 eV. Moreover, the CuS nanoparticles exhibited localized surface plasmonic resonance in the near infrared range, with a high absorption band centered at 973 nm of wavelength, which allowed an increase in the temperature of the surrounding media under irradiation. Finally, the cytotoxicity of the CuS nanoparticles as well as their potential use as part of drug delivery platforms were investigated.

Nitrogen and phosphorus pollution is of great concern to aquatic life and human well-being. While most of these nutrients are applied to the landscape, little is known about the complex interplay among nutrient applications, transport attenuation processes, and coastal loads. Here, we enhance and apply the Spatially Explicit Nutrient Source Estimate and Flux model (SENSEflux) to simulate the total annual nitrogen and phosphorus loads from the US Great Lakes Basin to the coastline, identify nutrient delivery hotspots, and estimate the relative contributions of different sources and pathways at a high resolution (120 m). In addition to in-stream uptake, the main novelty of this model is that SENSEflux explicitly describes nutrient attenuation through four distinct pathways that are seldom described jointly in other models: runoff from tile-drained agricultural fields, overland runoff, groundwater flow, and septic plumes within groundwater. Our analysis shows that agricultural sources are dominant for both total nitrogen (TN) (58%) and total phosphorus (TP) (46%) deliveries to the Great Lakes. In addition, this study reveals that the surface pathways (sum of overland flow and tile field drainage) dominate nutrient delivery, transporting 66% of the TN and 76% of the TP loads to the US Great Lakes coastline. Importantly, this study provides the first basin-wide estimates of both nonseptic groundwater (TN: 26%; TP: 5%) and septic-plume groundwater (TN: 4%; TP: 2%) deliveries of nutrients to the lakes. This work provides valuable information for environmental managers to target efforts to reduce nutrient loads to the Great Lakes, which could be transferred to other regions worldwide that are facing similar nutrient management challenges.

Drainage water quality is a crucial factor reflecting the regime of agricultural non-point source pollution in irrigation districts and is closely related to land use, soil texture, cropping pattern, fertilization, and irrigation and drainage conditions. However, the response of drainage water quality to various natural and anthropogenic factors needs further exploration in irrigation districts affected by shallow groundwater table. Spatiotemporal patterns of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) were monitored and analyzed in ten agricultural drainage ditches in the arid region of China from 2011 to 2019. Spatially, water pollution in agricultural drainage ditches with small water quantity can be significantly exacerbated by urban sewage, whereas a large amount of agricultural drainage can effectively dilute the pollution of urban sewage. Severe soil salinization in the cropland increases the risk of water pollution due to easier losses of soil nutrient and organic matter. Soil salinization is a key factor in the crop distribution pattern based on the crop salt tolerance, and the maize/wheat field with a higher fertilizer application rate generally results in poorer drainage water quality. Temporally, for the agricultural drainage ditches, the monthly and annual COD, TP, TN, and NH4-N concentrations fluctuate inversely with drainage water quantity and are positively correlated with fertilizer application, among which the monthly COD concentration in drainage water has larger variation in severe salinized areas. There exist critical annual and monthly drainage amounts, above which the probabilities of higher concentrations of COD, TP, TN, and NH4-N reduce greatly.
