Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder with no effective interventions for curing or modifying its progression. However, emerging research suggests that vitamin A in the diet may play a role in both the prevention and treatment of AD, although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the dietary vitamin A modifies the gut microbiota and intestinal tissue transcriptome, impacting intestinal permeability and the release of inflammatory factors, thereby influencing Aß pathology shedding light on its potential as a dietary intervention for AD prevention and treatment. Methods: The APP/PS1-AD mouse model was employed and divided into three dietary groups: vitamin A-deficient (VAD), normal vitamin A (VAN), and vitamin A-supplemented (VAS) for a 12-week study. Neurobehavioral functions were assessed using the Morris Water Maze Test (MWM). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to quantify levels of Diamine Oxidase (DAO), D-lactate, IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-a cytokines. Serum vitamin A levels were analyzed via LC-MS/MS analysis. Immunohistochemical analysis and morphometry were performed to evaluate the deposition of Aß in brain tissue. The gut microbiota of APP/PS1 mice was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. Additionally, transcriptomic analysis was conducted on intestinal tissue from APP/PS1 mice. Results: No significant changes in food intake and body weight were observed among the groups. However, the VAD and VAS groups showed reduced food intake compared to the VAN group at various time points. In terms of cognitive function, the VAN group performed better in the Morris Water Maze Test, indicating superior learning and memory abilities. The VAD and VAS groups exhibited impaired performance, with the VAS group performing relatively better than the VAD group. Serum vitamin A concentrations differed significantly among the groups, with the VAS group having the highest concentration. Aß levels were significantly higher in the VAD group compared to both the VAN and VAS groups. Microbial analysis revealed that the VAS and VAN groups had higher microbial diversity than the VAD group, with specific taxa characterizing each group. The VAN group was characterized by taxa such as Actinohacteriota and Desulfovibrionaceae, while the VAD group was characterized by Parabacteroides and Tannerellaceae. The VAS group showed similarities with both VAN and VAD groups, with taxa like Desulfobacterota and Desulfovibrionaceae being present. The VAD vs. VAS, VAD vs. VAN, and VAS vs. VAN comparisons identified 571, 313, and 243 differentially expressed genes, respectively, which associated with cellular and metabolic processes, and pathway analysis revealed enrichment in pathways related to chemical carcinogenesis, drug metabolism, glutathione metabolism, and immune-related processes. The VAD group exhibited higher levels of D-lactate, diamine oxidase, and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-a, IL-1ß, IL-6) compared to the VAN and VAS groups. Conclusion: Dietary vitamin A supplementation modulates the gut microbiota, intestinal permeability, inflammatory factors, and Aß protein formation, offering insights into the pathogenesis of AD and potential therapeutic avenues for further exploration. This research highlights the intricate interplay between diet, gut microbiota, and neurodegenerative processes, emphasizing the importance of dietary interventions in managing AD-related pathologies.

Objectives: With the increasing number of people worldwide infected with SARS-CoV-2, the likelihood of co-infection and/or comorbidities is rising. The impact of these co-infections on the patient's immune system remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the immunological characteristics of secondary infections in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and preliminarily predict potential therapeutic effects of traditional Chinese medicine and their derivatives for the treatment of co-infections. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we included 131 hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, of whom there were 64 mild and 67 severe cases. We analyzed clinical characteristics and immunologic data, including circulating immune cell numbers, levels of inflammatory factors and viral load, comparing COVID-19 patients with and without co-infection. Results: Among 131 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, 41 (31.3%) were co-infection positive, with 33 (80.5%) having severe disease and 14 (34.1%) of them resulting in fatalities. Co-infected patients exhibited significantly higher severity and mortality rates compared to non-co-infected counterparts. Co-infected patients had significantly lower absolute counts of lymphocytes, total T lymphocytes, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells and B lymphocytes, while levels of hs-CRP, PCT and IL-6 were significantly elevated compared to non-co-infected patients. Additionally, the viral load of co-infected patients was significantly higher than non-co-infected patients. Conclusion: Co-infection emerges as a dangerous factor for COVID-19 patients, elevating the risk of severe pneumonia and mortality. Co-infection suppresses the host's immune response by reducing the number of lymphocytes and increasing inflammation, thereby diminishing the antiviral and anti-infective effects of the immune system, which promotes the severity of the disease. Therefore, it is crucial to implement infection prevention measures to minimize the spread of co-infections among COVID-19 hospitalized patients. Additionally, changes in these biomarkers provide a theoretical basis for the effective treatment of co-infections with traditional Chinese medicine.

OBJECTIVES: To observe the clinical efficacy of opening-closing six-qi acupuncture combined with western medication for primary hypertension of liver yang hyperactivity, and explore its action mechanism. METHODS: A total of 96 patients with primary hypertension of liver yang hyperactivity were randomly divided into an acupuncture group (48 cases) and a western medication group (48 cases, 2 cases eliminated, 1 case discontinued). The western medication group was given felodipine sustained-release tablets orally, 5 mg each time, once a day. The acupuncture group was treated with opening-closing six-qi acupuncture at tender points of shaoyang and yangming areas of the head on the basis of the western medication group, once every other day. A total of 4 weeks were required in both groups. The blood pressure before treatment and after 2, 4 weeks of treatment, the TCM syndrome score and serum levels of hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), homocysteine (Hcy) before and after treatment were observed, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated in the two groups. RESULTS: After 2, 4 weeks of treatment, the systolic blood pressure(SBP)and diastolic blood pressure(DBP) in both groups were decreased compared with those before treatment(P<0.05);except for DBP after 2 weeks of treatment, the SBP and DBP in the acupuncture group were lower than those in the western medication group(P<0.05). After treatment, the TCM syndrome scores and serum levels of hs-CRP, IL-6, Hcy were decreased compared with those before treatment in the two groups(P<0.05), those in the acupuncture group were lower than those in the western medication group(P<0.05).The total effective rate of the acupuncture group was 95.8% (46/48), which was higher than 73.3% (33/45) in the western medication group(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Opening-closing six-qi acupuncture combined with western medication could lower blood pressure, improve symptoms in patients with primary hypertension of liver yang hyperactivity.Its mechanism may be related to down-regulation of inflammatory factors.

Introduction: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a common chronic disease, and the loss of bone density and bone strength after menopause are its main symptoms. Effective treatments for PMOP are still uncertain, but Chinese medicine has some advantages in slowing down bone loss. Shengu granules are often used clinically to treat PMOP. It has been shown to be an effective prescription for the treatment of PMOP, and there is evidence that gut flora may play an important role. However, whether Shengu granules attenuate PMOP by modulating gut flora and related mechanisms remains unclear. Methods: In this study, we mainly examined the bone strength of the femur, the structure of the intestinal microbiota, SCFAs in the feces and the level of FOXP3 cells in the colon. To further learn about the inflammation response, the condition of the mucosa and the level of cytokines in the serum also included in the testing. In addition, to get the information of the protein expression, the protein expression of OPG and RANKL in the femur and the protein expression of ZO-1 and Occludin in the colon were taken into account. Results: The osteoporosis was significantly improved in the SG group compared with the OVX group, and the diversity of intestinal flora, the secretion level of SCFAs and the expression level of FOXP3 were significantly increased compared with the OVX group. In terms of inflammatory indicators, the intestinal inflammation scores of the SG group was significantly lower than those in the OVX group. Additionally, the serum expression levels of IL-10 and TGF-ß in the SG group were significantly increased compared with the OVX group, and the expression levels of IL-17 and TNF-α were significantly decreased compared with the OVX group. In terms of protein expression, the expression levels of ZO-1, Occluding and OPG were significantly increased in the SG group compared with the OVX group, and the expression level of RANKL was significantly decreased compared with the OVX group. Discussion: Shengu granules treatment can improve the imbalance of intestinal flora, increase the secretion of SCFAs and the expression of FOXP3, which reduces the inflammatory response and repairs the intestinal barrier, as well as regulates the expression of OPG/RANKL signaling axis. Overall, Shengu granules ameliorate ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis by the gut-bone-immune axis.

Polymannuronic acid (PM) is an alginate oligosaccharide derived from brown algae with a characterized structure and excellent biological activities. Herein, mice were given different doses of PM through 30-day-long-term intragastric administration, and the contents of the jejunum, ileum, and colon were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology for microbial diversity, and relevant experiments were verified according to the analysis results so as to comprehensively evaluate the effects of PM on the intestinal flora. The PM (400 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg) could regulate the microflora balance at the phylum level and increase the microflora richness in the jejunum, ileum, and colon of the mice. The PM could induce more strains that are negatively correlated with Escherichia, thereby reducing the relative abundance of Escherichia. Analysis of bacterial function showed that high and low doses of PM could promote lipid metabolism in the bacterial communities. Moreover, the PM could reduce serum total cholesterol and cholesterol ester levels in a concentration-dependent manner. High-dose PM could lead to colonic intestinal inflammation by increasing the relative abundance of multiple bacterial groups in the jejunum, ileum, and colon. Moreover, high-dose PM could increase lipopolysaccharide-binding protein and interleukin-1ß levels. Therefore, the dose of PM plays an important role in its efficacy, and its biological activity is dosedifferent.

This study aims to examine the ameliorative effect of macadamia nut protein peptides (MPP) on acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury (AILI) in mice, and develop a new strategy for identifying hepatoprotective functional foods. The molecular weight distribution and amino acid composition of MPP were first studied. Forty mice were then randomized into four groups: control group (CON), APAP model group, APAP+MPP low-dose group (APAP+L-MPP), and APAP+MPP high-dose group (APAP+H-MPP). The APAP+L-MPP (320 mg/kg per day) and APAP+H-MPP (640 mg/kg per day) groups received continuous MPP gavage for 2 weeks. A 12 h of APAP (200 mg/kg) gavage resulted in liver damage. Pathological alterations, antioxidant index levels, expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), and associated inflammatory factors were determined for each treatment group. The results revealed that the total amino acid content of MPP was 39.58 g/100 g, with Glu, Arg, Asp, Leu, Tyr, and Gly being the major amino acids. The molecular weight range of 0-1000 Da accounted for 73.54%, and 0-500 Da accounted for 62.84% of MPP. MPP ameliorated the pathological morphology and reduced the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase of AILI in mice. MPP significantly increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in the liver compared with the APAP group. MPP inhibited the expression of TLR4, NF-κB, interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) genes in AILI mice. MPP also inhibited the expression levels of inflammatory factors (TNF-α and IL-6). Our study concludes that MPP alleviates AILI in mice by enhancing antioxidant capacity and inhibiting TLR4/NF-κB pathway-related gene activation.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical effect between two acupoint regimens of moxibustion on knee osteoarthritis (KOA), and observe the influences on the serum content of interleukin 1α (IL-1α), interleukin-17A (IL-17A), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), bone gla protein (BGP) and osteoprotegerin (OPG). METHODS: KOA patients were randomly divided into an observation group (40 cases, 2 cases dropped off) and a control group (40 cases, 3 cases dropped off). In the observation group, moxibustion was applied to Xiyan (EX-LE5), Dubi (ST35), Zusanli (ST36), Dazhu (BL11), Xuanzhong (GB39) and Yongquan (KI1) on the affected side. In the control group, EX-LE5, ST35 and ST36 were selected on the affected side. One session of treatment took 30 min in each group, delivered 3 times a week and the duration of treatment was 4 weeks. The scores of Western Ontario and McMaster University (WOMAC) and visual analogue scale (VAS) were observed and the serum content of IL-1α, IL-17A, TNF-α, BGP and OPG of the two groups were measured before and after treatment. RESULTS: Compared with those before treatment, the WOMAC score, VAS score and the serum content of IL-1α, IL-17A and TNF-α were decreased (P<0.05), and the content of BGP and OPG were increased (P<0.05) after treatment. Compared with the control group, the WOMAC score, VAS score and the serum content of IL-1α and TNF-α in the observation group were lower (P<0.05), and the content of BGP and OPG were higher (P<0.05). The total effective rate of the observation group was 89.5% (34/38), and that of the control group was 83.8% (31/37), with no statistically significant difference. CONCLUSIONS: Moxibustion therapy of "nourishing the kidney and benefiting the marrow" can relieve joint pain, improve joint function, reduce the level of inflammatory factors and ameliorate bone metabolic indicators. The effect of the acupoint regimen in this moxibustion therapy is better than that of the local acupoint selection.

BACKGROUND: To observe the effects of conventional theatre nursing combined with transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in elderly total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. METHODS: Forty elderly TKA patients were randomly divided into a conventional nursing (control) group and a TEAS group. Using conventional nursing, TEAS was used to stimulate the "Zusanli" and "Sanyinjiao" in the healthy leg of patients in the TEAS group. All patients received mini-mental (MMSE) scores 1 day before surgery (T0) and 1, 3, and 7 days after surgery (T1, T3, T7). Plasma levels of interleukin-1 (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and S100ß were measured using venous blood samples. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in baseline clinical characteristics between the two groups. Compared to T0, the MMSE scores of patients in the control group were significantly reduced at T1 and T3 (P < 0.05). Compared to the control group, the MMSE scores of patients in the TEAS group increased significantly at T3 (P < 0.05). The incidence of POCD in the TEAS group was 10%, lower than in the control group (40%) (P < 0.05). The levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α and S-100ß in patients in the TEAS group were lower than in the control group on days T1, T3 and T7 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Conventional intraoperative nursing combined with TEAS can reduce the incidence of POCD. The possible mechanism is related to the reduction of inflammatory response and neuronal injury with TEAS. CLINICAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2300070281.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Danmu Extract Syrup (DMS) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in mice and explore the mechanism. METHODS: Seventy-two male Balb/C mice were randomly divided into 6 groups according to a random number table (n=12), including control (normal saline), LPS (5 mg/kg), LPS+DMS 2.5 mL/kg, LPS+DMS 5 mL/kg, LPS+DMS 10 mL/kg, and LPS+Dexamethasone (DXM, 5 mg/kg) groups. After pretreatment with DMS and DXM, the ALI mice model was induced by LPS, and the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were collected to determine protein concentration, cell counts and inflammatory cytokines. The lung tissues of mice were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, and the wet/dry weight ratio (W/D) of lung tissue was calculated. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1 ß in BALF of mice were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The expression levels of Claudin-5, vascular endothelial (VE)-cadherin, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), phospho-protein kinase B (p-Akt) and Akt were detected by Western blot analysis. RESULTS: DMS pre-treatment significantly ameliorated lung histopathological changes. Compared with the LPS group, the W/D ratio and protein contents in BALF were obviously reduced after DMS pretreatment (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The number of cells in BALF and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity decreased significantly after DMS pretreatment (P<0.05 or P<0.01). DMS pre-treatment decreased the levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1 ß (P<0.01). Meanwhile, DMS activated the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) pathway and reversed the expressions of Claudin-5, VE-cadherin and VEGF (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: DMS attenuated LPS-induced ALI in mice through repairing endothelial barrier. It might be a potential therapeutic drug for LPS-induced lung injury.

BACKGROUND: Danggui Buxue Decoction (DBD) is a traditional Chinese medicine prescription, which has the functions of benefiting Qi, generating blood and regulating the immune system. At present, various clinical reports suggest that DBD has some efficacy in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but its mechanism of action is still unclear. Thus, the present study explored mechanism of this preparation on RA. METHODS: The effect of DBD was evaluated by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced Human fibroblast-like synoviocyte of rheumatoid arthritis (HFLS-RA) cell model and collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model, respectively. Inflammatory factors including TNF-ɑ, IL-1ß, IL-6 and IL-10 in the culture supernatants or rat serum were measured using ELISA. The related indexes including fur luster, mental state and activity of rat and the symptoms including swelling and deformation of toes and ankles were also measured. RESULTS: In vitro results showed that DBD cannot only inhibit the proliferation of HFLS-RA cells but also reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory factors while increasing the level of anti-inflammatory factors. Similar results were obtained from in vivo experiments. Rats receiving DBD showed a decrease in the severity of rheumatoid arthritis in rat models. Moreover, the protein levels of c-myc and ß-catenin decreased significantly, while the protein level of SFRP4 increased, which indicated that DBD might inhibit the inflammatory reaction by regulating Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, thus alleviating the symptoms of RA. CONCLUSION: Our findings not only provide insights for understanding the molecular mechanism of DBD in treating RA, but also provide the theoretical basis for further clinical prevention and treatment.

Yinhuapinggan granule (YHPG) is a traditional Chinese medicine prescription with rich clinical experience for the treatment of colds and coughs. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effect of YHPG on multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) infection in vivo and its potential anti-inflammatory mechanism. BALB/c mice were intranasally inoculated with MDR A. baumannii strain to establish the pneumonia infection model, and received intraperitoneally cyclophosphamide to form immunosuppression before attack. YHPG (6, 12 and 18 g/kg) was administered by gavage once a day for 3 consecutive days after infection. The protective effect of YHPG was evaluated by lung index, spleen index, thymus index, pathological changes of lung tissue and inflammatory factors (IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α) in serum. The expression of key targets of NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway in vivo was analyzed by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and Western blot. The results showed that YHPG improved the lung index and its inhibition rate, immune organ indexes and lung pathological changes in infected mice, and significantly reduced IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α levels in serum. In addition, YHPG significantly down-regulated the mRNA and protein expression of NF-κB p65, NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1ß in mice lung tissue. The results of the current study demonstrated that YHPG has significant protective effects on mice infected with MDR A.baumannii, which may be related to the regulation of inflammatory factors and NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway, indicating that YHPG has a wide range of clinical application value and provides a theoretical basis for its treatment of MDR A.baumannii infection.

Background: Rotavirus (RV) is one of the most common pathogens causing diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. Routinely, antiviral therapy, intestinal mucosa protection, and fluid supplementation are used in clinic, however this is not efficacious in some severe cases. Zinc supplementation has previously been shown to improve resolution of symptoms from infectious diarrhea. Methods: In this study differences in response rate, duration of hyperthermia, vomiting, and diarrhea, and the persistence time of cough and lung rales in groups were compared. 16SrDNA gene sequencing technology was used to analyze and compare changes in the intestinal microflora of children with RV enteritis who received the conventional treatment with or without the zinc preparation. In addition, the correlations between the differential bacterial species and the related inflammatory factors were determined. Results: Conventional therapy combined with the zinc preparation significantly shortened the duration of hyperthermia, vomiting, and diarrhea compared with the conventional treatment alone. In addition, the time to symptom relief showed that the absorption time of cough and lung rales was significantly shorter in the combination treatment group than that in the conventional treatment group in the children with pneumonia. Further, compared with the conventional treatment, the combined treatment significantly increased the diversity and abundances of florae as compared with the conventional treatment. This combination therapy containing zinc preparation markedly increased the abundances of Faecalibacterium, Bacteroidales, Ruminoccoccoccus, and Lachnospiraceae at the genus level. The LEfSe analysis suggested that Clostridiumbolteae were most significantly altered after the combination therapy. In addition, a correlation analysis revealed significantly negative correlations between the inflammatory factors especially IL-6, TNF-a, CRP and some intestinal florae such as Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, Blautia, Parabacteroides, Subdoligranulum, and Flavonifractor. Conclusion: Compared with the conventional therapy alone, the combined therapy with the zinc preparation significantly improves symptoms caused by RV. The combination therapy containing the zinc preparation significantly increases the diversity and abundances of some beneficial groups of bacteria. Further, The presence of these groups was further negatively correlated with relevant inflammatory factors. More importantly, this combination therapy containing the zinc preparation provides a reference for the clinical management of children with RV enteritis.

SUMMARY: The 12C6+ heavy ion beam irradiation can cause bystander effects. The inflammatory cytokines, endocrine hormones and apoptotic proteins may be involved in 12C6+ irradiation-induced bystander effects. This study characterized the protective effects and mechanisms of Huangqi decoction (HQD) against 12C6+ radiation induced bystander effects. Wistar rats were randomly divided into control, 12C6+ heavy ion irradiation model, and high-dose/medium-dose/low-dose HQD groups. HE staining assessed the pathological changes of brain and kidney. Peripheral blood chemical indicators as well as inflammatory factors and endocrine hormones were detected. Apoptosis was measured with TUNEL. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression was determined with real-time PCR and Western blot.Irradiation induced pathological damage to the brain and kidney tissues. After irradiation, the numbers of white blood cells (WBC) and monocyte, and the expression of interleukin (IL)-2, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and PCNA decreased. The damage was accompanied by increased expression of IL-1β, IL-6, corticosterone (CORT) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) as well as increased neuronal apoptosis. These effects were indicative of radiation-induced bystander effects. Administration of HQD attenuated the pathological damage to brain and kidney tissues, and increased the numbers of WBC, neutrophils, lymphocyte and monocytes, as well as the expression of IL-2, CRH and PCNA. It also decreased the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, CORT and ACTH as well as neuronal apoptosis. HQD exhibits protective effects against 12C6+ radiation-induced bystander effects. The underlying mechanism may involve the promotion of the production of peripheral blood cells, inhibition of inflammatory factors and apoptosis, and regulation of endocrine hormones.


La irradiación con haz de iones pesados 12C6+ puede provocar efectos secundarios. Las citoquinas inflamatorias, las hormonas endocrinas y las proteínas apoptóticas pueden estar involucradas en los efectos secundarios inducidos por la irradiación 12C6+. Este estudio caracterizó los efectos y mecanismos protectores de la decocción de Huangqi (HQD) contra los efectos externos inducidos por la radiación 12C6+. Las ratas Wistar se dividieron aleatoriamente en grupos control, modelo de irradiación de iones pesados 12C6+ y grupos de dosis alta/media/baja de HQD. La tinción con HE evaluó los cambios patológicos del cerebro y el riñón. Se detectaron indicadores químicos de sangre periférica, así como factores inflamatorios y hormonas endocrinas. La apoptosis se midió con TUNEL. La expresión del antígeno nuclear de células en proliferación (PCNA) se determinó mediante PCR en tiempo real y transferencia Western blot. La irradiación indujo daños patológicos en los tejidos cerebrales y renales. Después de la irradiación, disminuyó el número de glóbulos blancos (WBC) y monocitos, y la expresión de interleucina (IL)-2, hormona liberadora de corticotropina (CRH) y PCNA. El daño estuvo acompañado por una mayor expresión de IL-1β, IL-6, corticosterona (CORT) y hormona adrenocorticotrópica (ACTH), así como un aumento de la apoptosis neuronal. Estas alteraciones fueron indicativas de efectos inducidos por la radiación. La administración de HQD atenuó el daño patológico a los tejidos cerebrales y renales, y aumentó el número de leucocitos y monocitos, así como la expresión de IL-2, CRH y PCNA. También disminuyó la expresión de IL-1β, IL-6, CORT y ACTH, así como la apoptosis neuronal. HQD exhibe mecanismos protectores contra los efectos externos inducidos por la radiación 12C6+. El mecanismo subyacente puede implicar la promoción de la producción de células sanguíneas periféricas, la inhibición de factores inflamatorios y la apoptosis y la regulación de hormonas endocrinas.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of the combined application of blistering cupping with thunder-fire moxibustion in treating bronchial asthma of cold-wheezing syndrome, and its influences on airway remodeling, inflammatory factors, lung function, and quality of life on the base of conventional western medicine treatment. METHODS: A total of 76 patients with bronchial asthma of cold-wheezing syndrome were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 38 cases in each group. In the control group, the basic treatment was used, i.e. budesonide formoterol powder inhalation. In the observation group, on the basis of the treatment as the control group, blistering cupping combined with thunder-fire moxibustion was supplemented, Dazhui (GV 14), Danzhong (CV 17) and bilateral Feishu (BL 13), Gaohuang (BL 43), and Zhongfu (LU 1) were selected; blistering cupping was administered once a day and thunder-fire moxibustion was given twice a day. One course of treatment was composed of 7 days in both groups, and 2 courses of treatment were required. Before and after treatment, the airway remodeling indexes (matrix metalloproteinase-9 [MMP-9], tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 [TIMP-1], and transforming growth factor-ß1 [TGF-ß1]) and inflammatory indexes (interleukin [IL] -1ß、IL-25) were detected by using radioimmunoassay in the patients of the two groups. The lung function, traditional Chinese medicine symptom score, and asthma quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) score were observed in the patients of the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment, the serum levels of MMP-9, TIMP-1, TGF-ß1, IL-1ß, IL-25, peak expiratory flow (PEFR), traditional Chinese medicine symptom scores, and AQLQ scores were decreased compared with those before treatment in the patients of the two groups (P<0.05), and the results in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the first second forced expiratory volume (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow rate (PEF) were increased compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05), and the results in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: On the basis of the conventional western medicine treatment, the combination of blistering cupping with thunder-fire moxibustion can effectively ameliorate the clinical symptoms of patients, reduce inflammatory levels, inhibit airway remodeling and improve the lung function and quality of life in the patients with bronchial asthma.

Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy of Bolus of Six Drugs Including Rehmannia (Liuwei Dihuang pill) as an adjunct to metformin in the treatment of senile Type-2 diabetes mellitus and its influence on insulin resistance, inflammatory factors and blood glucose-related indexes. Methods: This is a Retrospective study. Eighty senile Type-2 diabetes mellitus admitted to Baoding Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2019 to December 2021 were enrolled and divided into two groups using the random number method. Patients in the control group were given oral metformin, while those in the observation group were treated with Bolus of six Drugs Including Rehmannia as an adjunct to metformin. The clinical efficacy, blood glucose-related indicators, insulin-related indicators, inflammatory factors-related indicators and adverse drug reactions were compared between the two groups. Results: The overall response in the observation group was higher than that in the control group(P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of FPG, 2hPG and HbA1 being more significantly lower in the observation group than that in the control group(P<0.05). Moreover, the levels of FINS, HOMA-IR and HOMA-IS were all significantly improved in the observation group than that the control group (P<0.05). HOMA-ß levels in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). The levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Bolus of six Drugs Including Rehmannia as an adjunct to metformin is a regimen with satisfactory safety profile for the treatment of senile Type-2 diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with mifepristone on uterine fibroids and its influence on sex hormones and inflammatory factors. METHODS: Data of 102 patients with uterine fibroids admitted to Shanxi Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine from January 2019 to January 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, there were 50 patients treated with mifepristone alone (control group) and 52 patients undergoing combined treatment of acupuncture and mifepristone (observation group). After 2 months of continuous treatment, the therapeutic efficacy, volume of uterine fibroids and uterus, levels of inflammatory factors (C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)), as well as levels of estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), along with hemodynamic levels and incidence of adverse reactions were recorded and compared between the two groups. Logistic analysis was employed to identify the independent risk factors for the recurrence of uterine fibroids in patients. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the observation group was identified with significantly higher overall response rate (P < 0.05). The uterine fibroid volume and uterine volume significantly improved in both groups after treatment, and the improvements were more prominent in the observation group than in the control group (P < 0.05). After treatment, the serum CRP and TNF-α were both evidently decreased in the two groups, while levels of E2, FSH, LH and peak blood flow velocity were significantly ameliorated, and the improvements in the observation group were more significant than those in the control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P > 0.05). Alcohol intake and treatment regime were independent risk factors for the recurrence of uterine fibroids in patients. CONCLUSION: Combining acupuncture with mifepristone can significantly improve uterine fibroids, estrogen and progesterone levels, as well as reduce inflammation, with a high level of safety, making it a promising treatment for clinical use.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of modified Guizhi plus Gegen decoction combined with the blade needle therapy on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes, cervical curvature, and inflammatory factor levels in patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 114 patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy who visited Pain Clinic, Hangzhou Fuyang Hospital of TCM Orthopedics and Traumatology from January 2020 to December 2022 were selected as the study subjects. According to different treatment methods, these patients were divided into an observation group (n=57, treated with blade needle therapy) and a control group (n=57, treated with modified Guizhi plus Gegen decoction combined with the blade needle therapy). Patients in both groups were treated for 3 courses. The treatment effects, TCM syndrome scores, cervical curvature, hemorheology indexes, inflammatory factors and adverse reactions were analyzed and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The effective rate of patients in the observation group was 94.74%, which was significantly higher than 82.46% in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, TCM syndrome scores, hemorheology indexes, and inflammatory factors levels in both of groups were significantly decreased in contrast to before treatment, while the cervical curvature was obviously increased. Compared with the control group, after the treatment, TCM syndrome scores, hemorheology indexes, inflammatory factors levels after treatment in the observation group were obviously lower, while the cervical curvature in the observation group being significantly increased (all P<0.05). No statistical differences were found for the incidence of adverse reactions between two the groups. CONCLUSION: Modified Guizhi plus Gegen decoction combined with the blade needle therapy effectively improved the TCM syndrome scores, restored the curvature of the cervical spine, improved the hemorheology of patients, inhibited the levels of inflammatory factors and it also has few adverse reactions, with a significant treatment effect in patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine prescriptions for resolving phlegm in the treatment of angina pectoris of phlegm-stasis coronary heart disease by a network Meta-analysis. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on clinical efficacy of CHD angina pectoris with interaction of phlegm and blood stasis were searched in PubMed, Springer, the Cochrane Library and Chinese-language databases China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Wanfang Data from their inception to December 2021. Literature was screened and literature bias risk was assessed by RevMan5.4 software. The overall response rate, the duration of angina attack, the levels of serum lipids such as total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and expression of hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were selected as outcome indicators for network Meta-analysis and mapped using Stata15.1 software. RESULTS: Totally, 26 RCTs were included, involving 2098 participants. There were 6 TCM formulas with the effects of dispelling phlegm and removing blood stasis. Taking conventional Western Medicine as the common intervention measures, the results showed that the overall response improvement rate from high to low was displayed as modified Xiaoxianxiong decoction (, MXD), Danlou tablet (, DT), modified Gualou Xiebai Banxia decoction (, MGXBD), modified Wendan decoction (, MWD), modified Zhishi Xiebai Guizhi decoction (, MZXGD), and modified Erchen decoction (, MED). The sequence of angina attack duration improvement from high to low was MZXGD, MGXBD, DT, MWD, MXD. The sequence of TC improvement from high to low was MZXGD, MED, DT, and MGXBD. Sequence of improving TG from high to low was MED, MZXGD, MGXBD, and DT. For LDL-C improvement, the effect from good to poor was MZXGD, MGXBD, DT, and MED. With regard to HDL-C improvement, the effect was ranked as MED, MZXGD, MGXBD, and DT from good to poor. hs-CRP expression from high to low was MZXGD, MXD, MED, MWD, and MGXBD. CONCLUSION: TCM formula with the effects of dispelling phlegm and removing blood stasis combined with conventional Western Medicine has obvious advantages in treating CHD angina pectoris with interaction of phlegm and blood stasis. MZXGD has great potential in increasing the overall response rate, reducing Duration of angina attack improving blood lipids, and reducing inflammatory factors. However, due to the limitations of extant studies, the conclusions of this study need to be confirmed by numerous reasonably-designed RCTs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture combined with western medicine in the treatment of neck, shoulder, lumbar and leg pain and its influence on the degree of pain, motor functions and inflammatory factor levels. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 86 patients with neck, shoulder, lumbar and leg pain treated in Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Hangzhou Fuyang Hospital of TCM from June 2019 to June 2022 were selected as the study subjects. According to different treatment methods, these patients were divided into an observation group (n=43) and a control group (n=43). Patients from the control group were treated with conventional western medicine, while those from the observation group were treated with combination of traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture (Acupuncture + Fumigation with Collaterals-Dredging Decoction) and western medicine. Patients in both groups were treated for 4 weeks continuously. The treatment effect, visual analogue scale (VAS) score, limb motor function scale (Fugl-Meyer) score, cervical function score, daily living ability score, the levels of inflammatory factors including interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were recorded and compared between two groups. RESULTS: The effective rate of patients in the observation group was 93.02%, which was significantly higher than 76.74% in the control group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the term of Fugl-Meyer score, VAS score and levels of inflammatory factors before treatment between two groups (all P>0.05). After treatment, the VAS score and the levels of IL-6, TNF-α and CRP in both of groups significantly decreased in contrast to before treatment. The Fugl-Meyer score after treatment in both of groups was significantly increased in contrast to before treatment. Compared with those after treatment in control group, the VAS score and the levels of IL-6, TNF-α and CRP after treatment in the observation group were obviously lower, while the Fugl-Meyer score in the observation group was significantly higher (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: TCM acupuncture combined with western medicine has a good therapeutic effect on neck, shoulder, lumbar and leg pains, which can effectively relieve the pain, improve motor function and reduce the inflammatory reactions in patients. The combined treatment has clinical application values and is worth promoting.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of transcutaneous acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on sleep quality and inflammatory factor in frail elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: A total of 100 frail elderly patients undergoing elective laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 50 cases in each one. Patients in the observation group received TEAS, 30 min before surgery until the end of surgery, at 18:00 on the day of surgery and on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd day after surgery (30 min each time). TEAS was delivered at bilateral Neiguan (PC 6), Shenmen (HT 7) and Hegu (LI 4). The disperse-dense wave of 2 Hz/100 Hz was selected, and the maximal stimulation intensity depended on patient's tolerance. The operation procedure in the control group was same as the observation group, but without electric stimulation exerted. The 1st day before surgery and on the 1st, 3rd and 7th day after surgery, the scores of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and Athens insomnia scale (AIS), as well as the serum levels of C reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were observed in the patients of two groups. At 24 h, 48 h and 72 h after surgery, the score of pain visual analogue scale (VAS) was recorded in the two groups, as well as the pressing times of analgesic pump and the usage of flurbiprofen axetil during analgesic stage. The occurrence of post operative adverse reactions was observed in the patients of two groups. RESULTS: On the 1st and 3rd day after surgery, except the usage of hypnotic drug scores, the scores of each item and the total scores of PSQI, as well as AIS scores were all increased in the two groups compared with those of 1 day before surgery (P<0.05); and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). On the 7th day after surgery, the scores of each item and the total scores of PSQI, and AIS scores were not different statistically in comparison between the two groups (P>0.05). On the 1st, 3rd and 7th day after surgery, serum levels of CRP and IL-6 were all increased in the patients of two groups when compared with those of 1 day before surgery (P<0.05), serum levels CRP and IL-6 in the patients of the observation group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). The VAS scores of 24 h, 48 h and 72 h after surgery, the pressing times of analgesic pump, the frequency and dosage of the remedies were not different statistically between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: TEAS can effectively improve sleep quality and reduce inflammatory reaction in frail elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.
