PURPOSE: Proprioception is a self-perceived sense of position and movement of one's body and its deficits can lead to motor control problems such as delayed muscle reflexes. Previous studies have confirmed lumbar proprioception impairments among individuals with Low Back Pain (LBP), which can afflict the normal central sensory-motor control and hence increases the risk of abnormal loading on the lumbar spine. Although the local investigation of proprioception is important, its influence on other joints in a kinetic chain particularly between extremities and spine should not be ignored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the proprioception of knee joint in different trunk positions among females with chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP) and healthy females. DESIGN: The study included 24 healthy subjects and 25 patients with CNSLBP participated in this study. Repositioning error of knee joint in four different lumbar positions including flexion, neutral position, 50% ROM of left rotation and 50% ROM right rotation was evaluated using an inclinometer. Absolute error and constant error were obtained and analyzed. RESULTS: Absolute error in flexion and neutral positions in the individuals with CNSLBP were significantly higher than in healthy individuals; whereas, there was no significant difference in absolute and constant error between the two groups in 50% rotation to either side. CONCLUSION: This study showed that knee joint repositioning accuracy was reduced in patients with CNSLBP compared to healthy ones.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder injuries are associated with proprioceptive deficits. Elastic kinesiology tape (KT) is used for treating musculoskeletal disorders, including shoulder injuries, as it arguably improves proprioception. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the evidence on the effects of elastic KT on proprioception in healthy and pathological shoulders. METHODS: Four databases (PubMed, WoS, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus) were searched for studies that investigated the effects of elastic KT on shoulder proprioception. Outcome measures were active joint position sense (AJPS), passive joint position sense (PJPS), kinesthesia, sense of force (SoF), and sense of velocity (SoV). Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration RoB tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and the ROBINS-1 for non-RCTs, while the certainty of evidence was determined using GRADE. RESULTS: Eight studies (5 RCTs, 3 non-RCTs) were included, yielding 187 shoulders (102 healthy and 85 pathological shoulders). RoB ranged from low (2 studies), moderate (5 studies), to high (1 study). Elastic KT has a mixed effect on AJPS of healthy shoulders (n=79) (low certainty). Elastic KT improves AJPS (subacromial pain syndrome and rotator cuff tendinopathy, n=52) and PJPS (chronic hemiparetic shoulders, n=13) among pathological shoulders (very low certainty). Elastic KT has no effect on kinesthesia among individuals with subacromial pain syndrome (n=30) (very low certainty). CONCLUSION: There is very low to low certainty of evidence that elastic KT enhances shoulder AJPS and PJPS. The aggregate of evidence is currently so low that any recommendation on the effectiveness of elastic KT on shoulder proprioception remains speculative.

High-quality sensory perception and body scheme (somatognosis) are important aspects for sport performance. This study compares stereognosis, body scheme, and kinesthesia in a group of 36 competitive karate athletes against a control group of 32 general population participants. The stereognosis Petrie test, two body scheme tests, and three kinesthesia tests served as outcome measurement tools. No significant difference was found in the stereognosis Petrie test, for the dominant (p = .389) or the nondominant (p = .791) hand, nor in the kinesthesia test (dominant, p = .661 and nondominant, p = .051). Karate athletes performed significantly better in the body scheme tests, that is, fist width estimation (p = .024) and shoulder width estimation (p = .019), as well as in karate-specific kinesthesia tests, that is, single punch (p = .010) and triple punch (p = .001). This study confirms competitive karate athletes have significantly better somatognosis, and better accuracy when performing quick dynamic movements compared with the general population.

Background: The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of kinesiology tape (KT) on lower limb muscle activation during computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) tasks and ankle kinesthesia in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Methods: Thirty-five men with CAI participated in this study. The experimental procedure followed a repeated measures design. Muscle activation of lower extremity and ankle kinesthesia of participants were measured using four taping treatments, namely, KT, athletic tape (AT), sham tape (ST), and no tape (NT) in a randomized order. Muscle activation was assessed using surface electromyography (sEMG) synchronized with CDP tests from seven lower extremity muscles of the unstable limb. Ankle kinesthesia was measured by using a threshold to detect the passive motion direction of the unstable ankle. Parameters were analyzed by using a one-way repeated measures ANOVA and followed by pairwise comparisons with a Bonferroni correction. Results: No significant difference was observed among different taping treatments for the majority of parameters during CDP. Except for condition 4 with open eyes, sway-referenced surface, and fixed surround in the sensory organization test (SOT), gastrocnemius medialis root mean square (RMS) was 28.19% lower in AT compared with NT (p = 0.021, 95% CI = 0.002-0.039), while gastrocnemius lateralis RMS was 20.25% lower in AT compared with KT (p = 0.038, 95% CI = 0.000-0.021). In forward-small sudden translation from motor control test (MCT), for peroneal longus (PL), RMS was 24.04% lower in KT compared with ST (p = 0.036, 95% CI = 0.000-0.018). In toes-down sudden rotation from adaption test (ADT), for PL, RMS was 23.41% lower in AT compared with ST (p = 0.015, 95% CI = 0.002-0.027). In addition, no significant difference was observed for a threshold to the detection of passive motion direction among different taping treatments. Conclusion: This study indicated that KT had minimal effect on the muscle activation of the unstable lower limb during static stance, self-initiated, and externally triggered perturbation tasks from CDP and ankle kinesthesia among individuals with CAI, suggesting that the benefit of KT was too small to be clinically worthwhile during application for CAI.

The phantom sound perception mechanism by which a sound perception occurs without any external sound source is still enigmatic. According to our previous fMRI study, a small region in the parietal operculum 3 was hyperactivated as a function of tinnitus periodicity in subjects with acoustic trauma tinnitus sequelae. This region was localized in the vicinity of neural correlates of middle-ear tympano-ossicular chain movements due to pressure variations. Disturbed proprioceptors are known to trigger illusory perceptions; therefore, we hypothesized that a disturbance of middle-ear proprioceptors may originate phantom sound perceptions. We designed an fMRI study that aimed to stimulate middle-ear proprioceptors by repetitive vibrations using various rates of click trains. In this study, we report that exposure to specific rates of stimuli for a few minutes at comfortable intensity level in healthy subjects distinctly triggered transient tinnitus-like aftereffects. The fMRI neural correlates of the aftereffects were unequivocally localized in the same parietal region as in acoustic trauma tinnitus sufferers. Our results strongly suggest that a middle-ear kinesthetic/proprioceptive illusion exists at the origin of acoustic trauma tinnitus via a somatosensory pathway encompassing the trigeminal system.

This study evaluates the effects of training and detraining on ankle proprioception in terms of kinesthesia in adult women. Sixty participants were randomly assigned to three groups. Tai Chi and Brisk Walking Groups went through a 16-week training period followed by an eight-week detraining period. The ankle plantar-flexion, dorsal-flexion, inversion, and eversion kinesthesia were measured every four weeks. The ankle kinesthesia in plantar/dorsal flexion of both exercise groups decreased, but the Tai Chi Group decreased more and sooner than the Brisk Walking Group. The training effects of Tai Chi exercise were retained but diminished during the detraining. The training effects of Brisk Walking exercise were not retained. The kinesthesia of ankle inversion and eversion remained unchanged after training. The results suggest that Tai Chi exercise is more effective in training ankle proprioception in plantar and dorsal flexion and in retaining the training effects compared with Brisk Walking exercise.

BACKGROUND: Proprioception is the sensation of position and movement of our limbs and body in space. This sense is important for performing smooth coordinated movements and is impaired in approximately 50% of stroke survivors. In the present case series we wanted to determine how discrete stroke lesions to areas of the brain thought to be critical for somatosensation (thalamus, posterior limb of internal capsule, primary somatosensory cortex and posterior parietal cortex) would affect position sense and kinesthesia in the acute stages post-stroke. Given the known issues with standard clinical measures of proprioception (i.e. poor sensitivity and reliability) we used more modern quantitative robotic assessments to measure proprioception. METHODS: Neuroimaging (MRI, n=10 or CT, n=2) was performed on 12 subjects 2-10 days post-stroke. Proprioception was assessed using a KINARM robot within the same time frame. Visually guided reaching was also assessed to allow us to compare and contrast proprioception with visuomotor performance. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Proprioceptive impairments were observed in 7 of 12 subjects. Thalamic lesions (n=4) were associated with position sense (n=1) or position sense and kinesthesia (n=1) impairments. Posterior limb of the internal capsule lesions (n=4) were associated with primarily position sense (n=1) or kinesthesia (n=2) impairments. Lesions affecting primary somatosensory cortex and posterior parietal cortex (n=2) were associated with significant position sense and kinesthesia impairments. All subjects with damage to hypothesized structures displayed impairments with performance on the visually guided reaching task. Across the proprioceptive tasks, we saw that position sense and kinesthesia were impaired to differing degrees, suggesting a potential dissociation between these two components of proprioception.

A educação somática proposta pela técnica Alexander, a bioenergética ou o método Pilates são interpretados como elementos de uma estética política que oferece a possibilidade de transformar as experiências de si e concebe uma educação estética com base na expansão das qualidades subjetivas para o auto-conhecimento


Este artículo revisa el papel de la educación física y de las técnicas corporales surgidas a lo largo del siglo XX en la antropología de la modernidad. La educación somática que proponen técnicas corporales como la técnica Alexander, la bioenergética y el método Pilates, se interpreta como elemento de una estético-política que ofrece la posibilidad de transformar las experiencias de la educación física y concibe una educación estética a partir de la expansión de las cualidades subjetivas para el auto-conocimiento


The article explores the role of physical education in the anthropology of modernity as well as the role of corporeal techniques appeared along the 20th century.
