RESUMO

The release of 226Ra from phosphogypsum (PG) was evaluated by developing a novel tool for fully automated 226Ra lixiviation from PG integrating extraction/pre-concentration using a renewable sorbent format. Eight leached fractions (30mL each one) and a residual fraction were analyzed allowing the evaluation of dynamic lixiviation of 226Ra. An automatic system allows this approach coupling a homemade cell with a 226Ra extraction/pre-concentration method, which is carried out combining two procedures: Ra adsorption on MnO2 and its posterior co-precipitation with BaSO4. Detection was carried out with a low-background proportional counter, obtaining a minimum detectable activity of 7Bqkg-1. Method was validated by analysis of a PG reference material (MatControl CSN-CIEMAT 2008), comparing the content found in fractions (sum of leached fractions + residual fraction) to the reference value. PG samples from Huelva (Spain) were studied. 226Ra average activity concentration of the sum of leached fractions with artificial rainwater at pH 5.4±0.2 was 105±3Bqkg-1d.w. representing a 226Ra lixiviation of 37%; while at pH 2.0±0.2, it was 168±3Bqkg-1 d.w., which represents a 50%. Also, static lixiviation, maintaining the same experimental conditions, was carried out indicating that, for both considered pH, the 226Ra release from PG is up to 50% higher in a dynamic leaching that in a static one, may have both environmental and reutilization implications.

An accurate and sensitive method for the determination of selected EDCs in soil and compost from wastewater treatment plants is developed and validated. Five parabens, six benzophenone-UV filters and the antibacterials triclosan and triclocarban were selected as target analytes. The parameters for ultrasound-assisted extraction were thoroughly optimized. After extraction, the analytes were detected and quantified using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Ethylparaben (ring-(13)C6 labelled) and deuterated benzophenone (BP-d10) were used as internal standards. The method was validated using matrix-matched calibration and recovery assays with spiked samples. The limits of detection ranged from 0.03 to 0.40 ng g(-1) and the limits of quantification from 0.1 to 1.0 ng g(-1), while precision in terms of relative standard deviation was between 9% and 21%. Recovery rates ranged from 83% to 107%. The validated method was applied for the study of the behavior of the selected compounds in agricultural soils treated and un-treated with compost from WWTP. A lixiviation study was developed in both agricultural soil and treated soil and first order kinetic models of their disappearance at different depths are proposed. The application of organic composts in the soil leads to an increase of the disappearance rate of the studied compounds. The lixiviation study also shows the risk of pollution of groundwater aquifers after disposal or waste of these EDCs in agricultural soils is not high.

RESUMO

The feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge (SS) and sugar beet pulp lixiviation (SBPL) was assessed. Mesophilic and thermophilic batch assays of five different SS/SBPL ratios were used to investigate the effect of temperature, providing basic data on methane yield and reduction in total volatiles. Microbe concentrations (Eubacteria and methanogenic Archaea) were linked to traditional parameters, namely biogas production and removal of total volatile solids (TVS). The relationship between Eubacteria and Archaea was analysed. Given equal masses of organic matter, net methane generation was higher in the mesophilic range on the biochemical methane potential (BMP) test. Methane yield, TVS removal data and high levels of volatile fatty acids provided further evidence of the best behaviour of the mesophilic range. At the end of testing the microbial population under of the reactors consisted of Eubacteria and Archaea, with Eubacteria predominant in all cases.
