OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupuncture at "Sanyinjiao" (SP6) on sperm motility, testicular B cell lymphoma/leukelia-2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2 associated X protein (Bax), and Caspase-3 in mice with oligoasthenospermia induced by microwave radiation, so as to explore its underlying mechanisms in improving oligoasthenospermia. METHODS: Male BALB/C mice were randomly divided into control, model and acupuncture groups(n=6 in each group). The oligoasthenospermia model was established by continuous microwave irradiation with frequency of 2 450 MHz and power density of 40 mW/cm2, 1 h daily for 18 days. At the same time, manual acupuncture was applied to the acupuncture group on bilateral "Sanyinjiao" (SP6) for 30 s, once daily for 18 days. Sperm motility including the percentages of progressive motility (PR), non-progressive motility (NP), and PR + NP sperms was detected by computer-assisted sperm analysis, H.E. staining was used to observe the testicular morphology and Johnson score was calculated, the expression levels of Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3 in testis were detected by immunofluorescence. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the percentages of PR sperms, NP sperms, PR+NP sperms, Johnson score, and expression level of Bcl-2 were significantly decreased (P<0.05), while the expression levels of Bax and Caspase-3 were increased (P<0.05) in the model group. Compared with the model group, the percentages of PR sperms, PR+NP sperms, Johnson score, and expression level of Bcl-2 were significantly increased (P<0.05), while the expression levels of Bax and Caspase-3 were decreased (P<0.05) in the acupuncture group. Outcomes of H.E. staining showed that the seminiferous tubules became thinner, spermatogenic cells and sperm decreased or even disappeared, and the supporting cells were partially missing in the model group, which was relatively milder in the acupuncture group. CONCLUSION: Manual acupuncture at SP6 can improve sperm motility in oligoasthenospermia mice induced by microwave radiation, which may be related to its effects in down-regulating the expressions of Bax and Caspase-3, increasing expression of Bcl-2 in the testis.

The paper introduces professor ZHUANG Li-xing's clinical experience in treatment of intra-uterine residue and lochia after drug abortion. Professor ZHUANG believes that this disorder is related to "dysfunction of the thoroughfare vessel and the conception vessel, qi deficiency and blood stagnation, and retention of turbid qi in the uterus" in pathogenesis. The treating principle should focus on "regulating the functions of the thoroughfare vessel and the conception vessel, tonifying qi and eliminating stasis, as well as promoting qi movement". Besides Hegu (LI 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6), the acupoints are added from the conception vessel. The Daoqi Tongjing needling technique (the specific technique for directing qi and preserving essence) is exerted flexibly instead of traditional reinforcing and reducing technique of acupuncture to tonify qi and remove stasis.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at Shenmen (HT 7) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) on anxiety and depression in patients with insomnia, and to explore the mechanism of its compatibility effect. METHODS: Ninety patients of insomnia were randomly divided into a combination group, a Shenmen group and a Sanyinjiao group, 30 cases in each group. In addition, 37 cases with anxiety (12 cases in the combination group, 13 cases in the Shenmen group and 12 cases in the Sanyinjiao group) and 42 cases with depression (14 cases in the combination group, 14 cases in the Shenmen group and 14 cases in the Sanyinjiao group) were identified. The patients in the combination group, Shenmen group and Sanyinjiao group were treated with EA (dilatational wave, frequency of 5 Hz/25 Hz) at Shenmen (HT 7)-Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Shenmen (HT 7) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6), respectively, 30 min each treatment, once a day. The consecutive 5 days of treatments were taken as a course of treatment, and 2 courses of treatment were given. The insomnia severity index (ISI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) scores were evaluated before and after treatment, and the serum contents of dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) were measured. RESULTS: Compared before treatment, the ISI, SAS and SDS scores in the three groups were all decreased after treatment (P<0.05), and the ISI score in the combination group was lower than that in the Shenmen group (P<0.05). Among the patients with anxiety, compared before treatment, the ISI, SAS scores and serum contents of DA were all decreased after treatment in the three groups (P<0.05), and the serum contents of NE in the combination group and Shenmen group were decreased after treatment (P<0.05); the SAS score and serum contents of NE in the combination group and Shenmen group as well as the ISI score in the combination group were lower than those in the Sanyinjiao group (P<0.05). Among the patients with depression, compared before treatment, the ISI, SDS scores and serum contents of DA were all decreased after treatment in the three groups (P<0.05), and the serum contents of NE in the combination group and Shenmen group were decreased after treatment (P<0.05); the ISI, SDS scores and serum contents of NE in the combination group as well as SDS score in the Shenmen group were lower than those in the Sanyinjiao group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: EA at Shenmen (HT 7) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) has advantages over EA at Sanyinjiao (SP 6) on improving insomnia, anxiety and depression. Shenmen (HT 7) plays a major role in improving anxiety and depression. Shenmen (HT 7) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) may play a compatibility effect of regulating consciousness and sleeping by reducing the level of serum NE.

Acupuncture is an alternative treatment for primary dysmenorrhea (PDM). However, mechanisms by which acupuncture exerts its analgesic properties are still unclear. This study aimed to explore the cerebral blood flow (CBF) response to verum and sham acupuncture treatments, and further investigate whether pre-treatment CBF is capable of assessing symptom changes after interventions. A total of 11 PDM patients in the verum group and 12 patients in the sham group participated in this study. Pain rating index (PRI), CBF, and gonadal hormone levels were acquired before and after 8-week treatments. Both verum and sham acupuncture treatments exert its analgesic effect on PDM after intervention as PRI reduced (p < 0.05). Blood gonadal levels were not significantly different after acupuncture in both groups (all p > 0.05). In the verum group, intervention-related decreases in CBF were observed in the right dorsal anterior cingulate cortex. In the sham group, regions identified as showing reductions in CBF after acupuncture included the left ventromedial prefrontal cortex, left caudate, and left insula. Patients with higher baseline CBF in the left precuneus and right hippocampus were accompanied with worse treatment response to acupuncture intervention. Mechanisms of verum and sham acupuncture treatments are dissimilar as manifested by different brain responses.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PDM) is the most commonly encountered gynecological problem in reproductive-age women. Acupuncture has been suggested as an effective treatment of PDM that may modulate descending pain modulation systems. In the present study, we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate possible changes in descending pain modulation systems after acupuncture treatment in women with PDM. Thirty-four right-handed adult women with PDM participated in this randomized, single-blinded, sham-controlled study. Each patient was randomly allocated to an 8-week verum or sham acupuncture intervention on the bilateral Sanyinjiao (SP6). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was conducted before, during, and after the intervention to measure the spontaneous activity in brain. After the 8-week intervention, both verum and sham groups reported decreased menstrual pain. However, the cessation of decreased functional connectivity (FC) between periaqueductal gray matter and the regions associated with affective pain modulation and attention-related pain modulation were found in the verum but not in the sham group after the 8-week intervention. More decreased FC has been found in the region associated with non-specific effects of acupuncture intervention after the early stage of acupuncture intervention. These results indicated that verum acupuncture may intercept the altered FC in descending pain modulation systems in PDM.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a prevalent gynecological disease and is significantly associated with abnormal neural activity. Acupuncture is an effective treatment on PMS in clinical practice. However, few studies have been performed to investigate whether acupuncture might modulate the abnormal neural activity in patients with PMS. Thereby, the aim of the study was to assess alterations of the brain activity induced by acupuncture stimulation in PMS patients. METHODS: Twenty PMS patients were enrolled in this study. All patients received a 6-min resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scan before and after electro-acupuncturing stimulation (EAS) at Sanyinjiao (SP6) acupoint in the late luteal phase of menstrual. Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) method was applied to examine the EAS-related brain changes in PMS patients. RESULTS: Compared with pre-EAS at SP6, increased fALFF value in several brain regions induced by SP6, including brainstem, right thalamus, bilateral insula, right paracentral lobule, bilateral cerebellum, meanwhile, decreased fALFF in the left cuneus, right precuneus, left inferior temporal cortex. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide imaging evidence to support that SP6-related acupuncture stimulation may modulate the neural activity in patients with PMS. This study may partly interpret the neural mechanisms of acupuncture at SP6 which is used to treat PMS patients in clinical. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered on http://www.chictr.org.cn . Background: Acupuncture is an effective therapy for premenstrual syndrome (PMS). However, the mechanisms behind this method are still unclear. Our previous study found that aberrant amygdala resting-state functional networks were involved in PMS. Thereby, a deep investigation on the alterations of amygdala resting-state functional networks induced by acupuncture stimulation might contribute to a better understanding of the intricate mechanisms of acupuncture treatment on PMS. Methods: Twenty three PMS patients were recruited in this study. All patients received a 6-minute electro-acupuncture stimulation (EAS) at Sanyinjiao acupoint (SP6) and underwent two 6-minute resting-state fMRI scannings before and after EAS. With amygdala as the seed region, functional connectivity (FC) method was adopted to examine EAS-related modulation of intrinsic connectivity in PMS patients by comparing pre-EAS. Results: The results showed that EAS at SP6 induced increased FC between the left amygdala and brainstem, right hippocampus, and decreased FC between the left amygdala and left thalamus, bilateral supplementary motor area (SMA). Moreover, the results also showed that EAS at SP6 induced increased FC between the right amygdala and brainstem, right hippocampus, right orbitofrontal cortex, bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and decreased FC between the right amygdala and right SMA. Conclusions: Based on the results of our previous study, our findings might improve our understanding of neural mechanisms behind acupuncture effects on PMS.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a global disease with a high incidence and acupuncture therapy is a well appropriate method to treat insomnia. Shenmen (HT 7) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) are the acupoints most commonly used to treat insomnia. Although they can obviously relieve the clinical symptoms of insomnia, it is unclear whether they must be used together, whether the combination of two acupoints may have a synergistic or antagonistic effect, and whether there is a primary or secondary relationship between the two points in the treatment of insomnia. Further studies are needed. Therefore, in this study, we are exploring the acupoint combination effect and biological mechanism of HT 7 and SP 6 in treating insomnia. METHODS/DESIGN: This will be a parallel group randomized controlled trial. The study will recruit 120 patients with insomnia randomly assigned to a control group, an electroacupuncture on HT 7 group, an electroacupuncture on SP 6 group, and an electroacupuncture on HT 7 and SP 6 group. The allocation ratio is 1:1:1:1, with 30 subjects in each group. Meanwhile, ten healthy subjects who meet the study criteria will be recruited as the healthy control group. Patients in the intervention groups will be given ten rounds of electroacupuncture stimulation on the corresponding acupoints for 2 weeks, five times per week, with 2 days of rest between the two treatment courses. Patients in the control group will also receive the same two courses of ten rounds of compensatory acupuncture therapy after a 2-week waiting period for treatment. The major outcome measures of this study include the Sleep Dysfunction Rating Scale, the Insomnia Severity Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, and the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, combined with the Measure Your Medical Outcome Profile, to evaluate insomnia and the emotional state of patients with insomnia. The secondary outcome measures include sleep composition monitored by polysomnography and measurements of acetylcholine, serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, melatonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and metabolic biomarkers in serum. DISCUSSION: In this study, we are exploring the acupoint combination effect and biological mechanism of HT 7 and SP 6 in treating insomnia, which may provide evidence for the clinical application of acupuncture and acupoint selection in the treatment of insomnia. BACKGROUND: Elevated urinary albumin excretion is a clinical manifestation of early-stage diabetic nephropathy (DN). PURPOSE: To investigate effect of acupressure at Sanyinjiao on albuminuria in patients with early DN. METHODS: Total included 53 patients with DN and albuminuria; 21 were assigned to the sham group without acupressure, and 32 were assigned to the experimental group with acupressure at Sanyinjiao (SP6) for 8weeks. The experimental group was divided into experiment A (acupressure <45 days) and experiment B (acupressure ≥45 days). The primary outcome measure was the urine albuminuria/creatinine ratio (UACR) or logarithmic transformed urine microalbumin creatinine ratio (log-UACR) changes, and the secondary outcome measures were the estimated glomerular filtration rate and hemoglobin A1c. RESULTS: The difference in UACR and log-UACR before and after the study was higher in the experiment B group than in the experiment A and sham groups. CONCLUSION: Acupressure at Sanyinjiao for 8 weeks may reduce albuminuria in patients with DN. However, this study was a preliminary design.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has become a common complementary and alternative treatment approach for anxiety and depression. However, there is little research on the detailed mechanism of acupuncture therapy relieving depression. Previously, 17ß-estradiol (E2) was shown to prevent oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. This study investigated whether stimulation of Sanyinjiao (SP6) using a mechanical acupuncture instrument can alleviate depression-like behavior caused by estrogen deficiency in OVX rats. Furthermore, we found that acupuncture reduced ER stress and oxidative stress-related proteins expression. METHODS: The OVX operation was performed on female SD rats that were separated into four groups: The E2 (2.5 µg/kg, i.p.) injection group (OVX + E2), the OVX group (OVX), and the OVX with acupuncture stimulation group (OVX + SP6). Non-acupoint stimulation group (OVX + NonAcu). The acupuncture point stimulation began three weeks after surgery. The depressive behavior was analyzed by the forced swim test and open field test. The 8-OHDG, BiP, Sigma receptor 1, pJNK, PDI, Ero1-Iα and Calnexin protein levels were evaluated by immunoreactivity in the amygdala. RESULTS: Acupuncture stimulation reduced depressive behavior and altered depression-related proteins. Stimulation of SP6 decreased the immobility time of the FST and altered the ER stress and oxidative stress marker proteins, such as 8-OHDG, BiP, pJNK, PDI, Ero1-Ia and Calnexin. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that acupuncture at SP6 showed a significant antidepressant-like effect on an OVX-induced depression rat model by mitigation of ER stress and oxidative stress in amygdala.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effects on primary dysmenorrhea treated with moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) and warm needling at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). METHODS: A total of 120 patients with primary dysmenorrhea were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 60 cases in each one. In the control group, the warm needling technique was used at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). In the observation group, besides the same treatment as the control group, moxibustion was added at Shenque (CV 8). The treatment was given for 4 menstrual cycles consecutively. Before and after treatment, the score of the severity and the score of the total frequency in the retrospective scale of dysmenorrhea symptoms as well as the score of the visual analog scale (VAS) were recorded and compared in the patients between the two groups. Additionally, the safety of the two therapeutic methods was evaluated. RESULTS: After treatment, the score of severity and the score of total frequency as well as VAS score of menstrual pain were all reduced as compared with those before treatment in the patients of the two groups (all P<0.05). The scores in the observation group were more obvious as compared with the control group (all P<0.05). Regarding the safety evaluation, the difference was not significant between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The combined treatment of moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) with the warm needling technique at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) achieves the better clinical effects on primary dysmenorrhea as compared with the simple application of the warm needling technique at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). This therapy is safety in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the time-effect of stimulation of the embedded poly glycolide-co-lactide (PGLA) suture in Sanyinjiao (SP6) area in normal human body, so as to provide an experimental evidence for clinical application of micro-invasion suture-embedding at an appropriate interval. METHODS: A total of 8 healthy volunteer students (3 boys and 5 girls, ranging in age from 24 to 27 years) were recruited in the present study. A piece of sterilized PGLA suture was implanted into the left SP6 using minimally invasive surgery after strict local skin disinfection. The fat-suppression T2 weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI, displaying local lesion after eliminating interference of fat tissue signals), and T2 mapping 8-echo train images were acquired before and 8 h, 3, 7, 10 and 14 days after PGLA suture embedment by using a MR imaging system. After transformation of the T2-mapping 8-echo train images into T2-mapping images by using a relevant software, the T2 values (meaning the relaxation time of the local muscle) of the left SP6 were measured, followed by analysis of the signal intensity of T2 weighted fat-suppression images and T2 values at different time-points. RESULTS: Before the suture embedding, no abnormal signals were found in the signal intensity of T2 weighted fat-suppression images. After PGLA suture embedment, the local signal intensity of T2WI fat-suppression images was relatively increased at the 8th h, and on day 3, 7, 10 and 14 relevant to pre-embedment, but gradually atte-nuated on day 10 and 14. The T2 values were significantly increased at the 5 time-points of post-embedment (all P<0.01), but without significant differences among the 8thh, the 3rd and 7thd (P>0.05), and being markedly lowered on day 14 relevant to day 7 (P<0.01) in spite of being still markedly higher than that of pre-embedding (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The signal intensity of T2 weighted fat-suppression images and T2 values acquired from PGLA-suture-embedded SP6 acupoint area in healthy subjects may keep at least for 2 weeks, suggesting that the stimulating reaction of suture-embedment persists more than 14 days. Hence, when a micro-invasion embedding with PGLA suture performed, the interval of two weeks would be appropriate.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of moxibustion at "Guanyuan" (CV 4) and "Sanyinjiao" (SP 6) on bone morphology, metabolism and ERα of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the ovariectomized rats and explore the underlying mechanism of moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) on the regulation of bone metabolism. METHODS: A total of 60 SD rats were randomized into a normal group (20 rats) and an ovariectomy group (40 rats). In the normal group, no any treatment was provided. In the ovariectomy group, the classical ovariectomy was adopted to set up the osteoporosis model. In the 13th week after ovariectomy, 10 rats were collected from each of the normal group and the ovariectomy group for model identification. After model identification, the ovariectomy group was subdivided into a model group, an estradiol group and a moxibustion group, 10 rats in each one. In the normal group and the model group, the gavage was provided with 2 mL 0.9% sodium chloride solution, once a day. In the estradiol group, the gavage was provided with 17ß-estradiol 100 µg/(kg•d), once a day. In the moxibustion group, moxibustion was applied at "Guanyuan" (CV 4) and "Sanyinjiao" (SP 6), 15 min at each acupoint, once a day. The 6 treatments were as one course, with 1 day of interval, 12 courses were required. After 12-week intervention, the dual-energy X-ray was adopted to determine the bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content of the whole body in living condition. After sacrificed, HE staining was adopted to observe femur structure, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was to determine the absorbance of estradiol (E2) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum and the real-time quantitative PCR method was to determine the mRNA expressions of ERα of MSCs in tibia and femur. RESULTS: Compared with the model group, BMD was increased obviously in the pelvis and spine in the moxibustion group and the estradiol group (P<0.05, P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the bone mineral content was higher in the rib, pelvis and spine in the moxibustion group and the estradiol group, there was no statistically significant difference (all P>0.05). Compared with the model group, the bone trabeculas were stronger and well connected in the moxibustion group, indicated by HE staining. Compared with the model group, the concentrations of E2 in serum were increased obviously in the estradiol group and the moxibusiton group (both P<0.01), and ALP concentrations reduced obviously in the estradiol group and the moxibustion group (both P<0.001), the mRNA expressions of ERα in MSCs increased in the estradiol group and the moxibustion group (both P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Moxibustion at "Guanyuan" (CV 4) and "Sanyinjiao" (SP 6) effectively increases BMD and bone strength in the ovariectomized rats and the mechanism may be related to the improvement of serum E2 concentration, the decrease of serum ALP concentration and the up-regulation of mRNA expression of ERα in MSCs.

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the clinical effects on primary dysmenorrhea treated with moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) and warm needling at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6).@*METHODS@#A total of 120 patients with primary dysmenorrhea were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 60 cases in each one. In the control group, the warm needling technique was used at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). In the observation group, besides the same treatment as the control group, moxibustion was added at Shenque (CV 8). The treatment was given for 4 menstrual cycles consecutively. Before and after treatment, the score of the severity and the score of the total frequency in the retrospective scale of dysmenorrhea symptoms as well as the score of the visual analog scale (VAS) were recorded and compared in the patients between the two groups. Additionally, the safety of the two therapeutic methods was evaluated.@*RESULTS@#After treatment, the score of severity and the score of total frequency as well as VAS score of menstrual pain were all reduced as compared with those before treatment in the patients of the two groups (all 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The combined treatment of moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) with the warm needling technique at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) achieves the better clinical effects on primary dysmenorrhea as compared with the simple application of the warm needling technique at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). This therapy is safety in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effectiveness of electroacupuncture (EA) therapy in promoting medicinal abortion. METHODS: Sixty participants with early pregnancy were randomly divided into medication (control) and EA+ medication groups (n=30 in each). Participants in the control group were treated by regular medication (mifepristone and misoprostol tablets), and those of the EA group were treated by EA stimulation (2 Hz/100 Hz, a tolerable strength) of bilateral Hegu(LI 4) and Sanyinjiao(SP 6) for 25 min, and also by the same medication method mentioned in the control group. Participants of both groups were admitted to the hospital for observation on the 3rd day after taking medication. The abdominal pain was assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS) score, and the foetal sac discharge duration and the complete abortion rate were recorded. RESULTS: After the treatment, the VAS scores of both groups were significantly reduced in comparison with their own pre-treatment in each group (P<0.01), and the VAS score of the EA+ medication group was significantly lower than that of the medication group (P<0.01). The foetal sac discharge duration was significantly shorter in the EA+ medication group than in the medication group (P<0.01). The abortion rates showed no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: EA stimulation of Hegu(LI 4) and Sanyinjiao(SP 6) has a positive effect in assisting medicinal abortion in reducing abdominal pain and shortening foetal sac discharge duration.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a disorder that involves abnormal inflammation and nerve dysfunction frequently resistant to a broad range of treatments. Peripheral nerve stimulation with electroacupuncture (EA) has been widely used in different clinical conditions to control pain and inflammation; however, the use of EA in the treatment of CRPS is under investigation. In this study, we explore the effects of EA on hyperalgesia and edema induced in an animal model of chronic post-ischemia pain (CPIP model) and the possible involvement of endothelin receptor type B (ETB) in this effect. Female Swiss mice were subjected to 3 h hind paw ischemia/reperfusion CPIP model. EA treatment produced time-dependent inhibition of mechanical and cold hyperalgesia, as well as edema in CPIP mice. Peripheral administration (i.pl.) of BQ-788 (10 nmol), an ETB antagonist, prevented EA-induced antihyperalgesia while intrathecal administration prolonged EA's effect. Additionally, peripheral pre-treatment with sarafotoxin (SRTX S6c, 30 pmol, ETB agonist) increased EA anti-hyperalgesic effect. Furthermore, the expression of peripheral ETB receptors was increased after EA treatments, as measured by western blot. These results may suggest that EA's analgesic effect is synergic with ETB receptor activation in the periphery, as well as central (spinal cord) ETB receptor blockade. These data support the use of EA as a nonpharmacological approach for the management of CRPS-I, in an adjuvant manner to ETB receptor targeting drugs.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of mild moxibustion on the uterine microcirculation in patients of primary dysmenorrhea (PD) and explore the potential mechanism of mild moxibustion in the treatment of PD. METHODS: A total of 30 patients were randomized into a treatment group and a waiting list group, 15 cases in each one. Additionally, 15 healthy people were collected in the healthy group. In the treatment group, the mild moxibustion was used at Guanyuan (CV 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). The treatment was given once a day since 5 to 7 days before menstruation until menses, 20 min each time. The treatment lasted for 3 menstrual cycles. No any intervention was provided in the waiting list group and the healthy group. The three-dimensional Doppler ultrasound test was adopted to observe the changes of the relevant indexes of uterine arterial blood, such as the systolic velocity (Vs), the diastolic velocity (Vd), the mean velocity (Vm), peak systolic velocity/end diastolic velocity (S/D), pulsatility index (PI) and the resistance index (RI) before treatment and at the end of 3-menstrual-cycle treatment. RESULTS: Before treatment, as compared with the healthy group, Vs, Vd and Vm reduced in the treatment group and the waiting list group, S/D, PI and RI increased in the treatment group (all P<0.05). The differences were not significant in S/D, PI and RI between the waiting list group and the healthy group (all P>0.05). After treatment for 3 menstrual cycles, Vs, Vd and Vm increased in the treatment group (all P<0.05), S/D, PI and RI reduced (all P<0.05). The difference was not significant in every index before and after trial in the waiting list group and the healthy group (all P>0.05). After treatment, Vs, Vd and Vm in the treatment group were higher than those in the waiting list group (all P<0.05) and the difference was not significant as compared with those in the healthy group (all P>0.05). S/D, PI and RI in the treatment group were lower than those in the waiting list group and the healthy group (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The mild moxibustion remarkably improves the uterine microcirculation in PD patients, which is achieved possibly by increasing blood velocity and reducing vascular resistance.
