This study introduces an innovative approach for the valorization and protection of anthocyanins from 'Benihoppe' strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) based on acidified natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES). Choline chloride-citric acid (ChCl-CA, 1:1) was selected and acidified to enhance the valorization and protection of anthocyanins through hydrogen bond. The optimal conditions (ultrasonic power of 318 W, extraction temperature of 61 °C, liquid-to-solid ratio of 33 mL/g, ultrasonic time of 19 min), yielded the highest anthocyanins of 1428.34 µg CGE/g DW. UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS identified six anthocyanins in acidified ChCl-CA extract. Stability tests indicated that acidified ChCl-CA significantly increased storage stability of anthocyanins in high temperature and light treatments. Molecular dynamics results showed that acidified ChCl-CA system possessed a larger diffusion coefficient (0.05 m2/s), hydrogen bond number (145) and hydrogen bond lifetime (4.38 ps) with a reduced intermolecular interaction energy (-1329.74 kcal/mol), thereby efficiently valorizing and protecting anthocyanins from strawberries.

Strawberries rapidly deteriorate postharvest, necessitating effective measures to extend their shelf life. This study focused on developing an eco-friendly chitosan-based protective film for strawberry preservation. Strawberries were treated with a coating solution containing varying concentrations of hawthorn leaf extract (HLE) (0.4%, 0.7%, and 1.0%), 1.5% chitosan (CH), and 1% acetic acid. The results demonstrated that coating strawberry fruit with 1% CH-HLE notably delayed fruit spoilage. In-depth analysis revealed that, compared with the uncoated strawberry fruits, the 1% CH-HLE coating effectively reduced weight loss, the respiration intensity, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and superoxide anion (O2·-) production. Additionally, the coated strawberries exhibited improved firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), vitamin C (Vc) content, titratable acidity (TA), and total phenolic compound (TPC) content. The enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the CH-HLE-coated strawberries were greater than those in their uncoated counterparts. The application of a 1% CH-HLE coating successfully delayed spoilage and extend the shelf life of the strawberries by approximately 4-5 days. These findings suggest that CH-HLE has significant potential as a resource for protecting fruits and vegetables, offering an environmentally sustainable solution for postharvest preservation.

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) was introduced in Sicily (Italy) in the 1930s in the small town of Maletto, on the slopes of Etna volcan, where it's currently cultivated in a total area of 30 ha. The French cv. 'Madame Moutot', appreciated for its unique flavor and intense fragrance, was there propagated vegetatively and after decades, the distinctive 'Etna ecotype' originated by adaptation to the peculiar environmental conditions of the area (Milella et al., 2006). In May 2023, in a 0.5 ha "Etna ecotype" strawberry field, virus-like symptoms were observed in approximately 50% of the plants. Symptoms included severe dwarfing, leaf cupping and chlorotic spotting which lead to decline of infected plants. To investigate the etiology of the disease, leaf samples were collected from eight symptomatic plants for analysis by High-Throughput Sequencing (HTS). To this aim, total RNAs were extracted by using the RNeasy PowerPlant Kit (Qiagen, Germany). The RNAs were pooled, depleted of ribosomal RNA (QIAseq FastSelect; Qiagen), and a library was prepared according to the Illumina DNA Prep Kit. Sequencing on a NextSeq2000 instrument at Leibniz Institute DSMZ (Braunschweig, Germany) generated 31,149,784 of paired-end reads (150 nt), which were further analyzed in Geneious Prime version 2023.2 (Biomatters) using a custom workflow for virus discovery and genome assembly. Analysis of the assembled contigs by local BLASTn and BLASTp alignments against a custom plant virus database of NCBI nuclear-core (NC) reference sequences assigned a number of contigs to accession NC_025435, strawberry polerovirus 1 (SPV-1). Reconstruction of the virus genome by assembly of contigs and reads alignment resulted in a nearly complete genome sequence of SPV-1 (GenBank Acc. No. OR989958) showing by BLASTn 98.69% identity to the SPV-1 NC reference sequence, and 98.99 % identity with an isolate from the Czech Republic (GenBank Acc. OL421571). To confirm the presence of SPV-1 in each sample, RT-PCR using specific primers designed in this study SPV-1-CP-1F (5'-TCGAGATACGTCTAGAACTGCAA-3') and SPV-1-CP-1R (5'-GAGAGGCCCCTTCTACCTATTTG-3') targeting the entire 623 bp coat protein (CP) gene was performed. Amplicons of the expected size were obtained in five samples and Sanger-sequenced. The resulting sequences shared 99.85% - 100% of identity to the HTS - derived sequence (GenBank Acc. No. OR989958) through BLASTn analysis. Strawberry mottle virus (SMoV), strawberry mild yellow edge virus (SMYEV) and strawberry crinkle virus (SCV) were detected in the same library in addition to SPV-1 and then confirmed by RT-PCR using specific primers (Martin & Tzanetakis 2013). Strawberry polerovirus 1, related to the genus Polerovirus in the family Solemoviridae, was first reported in strawberries in Canada (Xiang et al. 2015) and was thereafter detected in the United States (Thekke-Veetil & Tzanetakis 2016), Argentina (Luciani et al. 2016), and Nepal (Kuwak et al. 2022). To date, the virus has been reported in Europe only in the Czech Republic (Franova et al. 2021). To our knowledge, this is the first report of SPV-1 in strawberry plants in Italy. Although the correlation between SPV-1 and strawberry decline (SD) is still uncertain (Xiang et al. 2015) transmission of the virus via aphids has recently been demonstrated (Franova et al. 2021). Our report let to hypothesize that its dissemination in Europe can be considered as increasing.

Different-sized pomegranate seed oil-based emulsions (coarse (CsP) and nanoemulsions (NsP): 1246 and 325 nm) were successfully prepared. Strawberries treated with NsP and CsP showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in yeast-mold counts (TMY) by 1.80 log CFU g-1, and mesophilic aerobic bacteria counts (TMAB) decreased (p < 0.05) by 0.91 log CFU g-1, respectively. CsP- and NsP-treated strawberries had a TPC of 74.45 and 82.35 mg GAE kg-1, respectively, while control samples had a TPC of 44.24 mg GAE kg-1. The strawberries treated with NsP exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity with 179.44 mol TEAC g-1. After treatment with a coarse emulsion, severity levels of A. niger and B. cinerea were 60 and 73 % while the nanoemulsion treatment significantly reduced severity levels to 55.3 and 56 %. The coarse and nanoemulsions may have potential use within the food industry owing to their antioxidant and antifungal properties as well as their ability to enhance strawberry quality and function.

The strawberry tree (Arbustus unedo) is a medicinal plant and an important source of biocompounds, potentially useful for pharmaceutical and chemical applications to prevent or treat several human diseases. The strawberry tree fruits have usually been used to produce traditional products such as jams and jellies and to obtain fermented alcoholic drinks, representing the most valuable derivative products. Other fermented products are potentially interesting for their nutritional value; however, the fermentation process needs to be controlled and standardized to obtain high-quality products/ingredients. In this work, we investigated two different fermentative procedures, using strawberry tree whole fruit and fruit paste as matrices inoculated with a selected starter strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae LI 180-7. The physical, chemical, microbiological and nutritional properties of fermented products were evaluated, as well as their antioxidant activity. The new obtained fermented products are enriched in organic acids (acetic acid varied from 39.58 and 57.21 mg/g DW and lactic acid from 85.33 to 114.1 mg/g DW) and have better nutritional traits showing a higher amount of total polyphenols (phenolic acids, flavonoids and anthocyanins) that ranged from 1852 mg GAE/100 g DW to 2682 mg GAE/100 g DW. Also, the amount of isoprenoid increased ranging from 155.5 µg/g DW to 164.61 µg/g DW. In this regard, the most promising strategy seemed to be the fermentation of the fruit paste preparation; while the extract of fermented whole fruits showed the most powerful antioxidant activity. Finally, a preliminary attempt to produce a food prototype enriched in fermented strawberry tree fruits suggested the whole fruit fermented sample as the most promising from a preliminary sensory analysis.

Recently, studies have shown that pesticides may have adverse effects on the flavor quality of the fruits, but there is still a lack of appropriate methods to repair the damage. This study investigated the effects and mechanism of applying the emerging material, nano­selenium, and two fungicides (Boscalid and Pydiflumetofen) alone or together on the flavor quality and antioxidant capacity of strawberries. The results showed that the two fungicides had a negative impact on strawberry color, flavor, antioxidant capacity and different enzymatic systems. The color damage was mainly attributed to the impact on anthocyanin content. Nano­selenium alleviated the quality losses by increasing sugar-acid ratio, volatiles, anthocyanin levels, enzyme activities and DPPH scavenging ability and reducing ROS levels. Results also showed that these damage and repair processes were related to the regulation of flavor and ripening related transcription factors (including FaRIF, FaSnRK1, FaMYB10, FaMYB1, FaSnRK2.6 and FaABI1), the upregulation of genes on sugar-acid, volatile, and anthocyanin synthesis pathways, as well as the increase of sucrose and ABA signaling molecules. In addition, the application of nano-Se supplemented the selenium content in fruits, and was harmless to human health. This information is crucial for revealing the mechanisms of flavor damage caused by pesticides to strawberry and the repaired of nano­selenium, and broadens the researching and applying of nano­selenium in repairing the damage caused by pesticides.

Gut microbes play a pivotal role in host physiology by producing beneficial or detrimental metabolites. Gut bacteria metabolize dietary choline and L-carnitine to trimethylamine (TMA) which is then converted to trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO). An elevated circulating TMAO is associated with diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer in humans. In the present study, we investigated the effect of dietary blueberries and strawberries at a nutritional dosage on TMA/TMAO production and the possible role of gut microbes. Blueberry cohort mice received a control (C) or freeze-dried blueberry supplemented (CB) diet for 12 weeks and subgroups received an antibiotics cocktail (CA and CBA). Strawberry cohort mice received a control (N) or strawberry-supplemented (NS) diet and subgroups received antibiotics (NA and NSA). Metabolic parameters, choline, TMA, and TMAO were assessed in addition to microbial profiling and characterization of berry powders. Blueberry supplementation (equivalent to 1.5 human servings) reduced circulating TMAO in CB versus C mice (~48%) without changing choline or TMA. This effect was not mediated through alterations in metabolic parameters. Dietary strawberries did not reduce choline, TMA, or TMAO. Depleting gut microbes with antibiotics in these cohorts drastically reduced TMA and TMAO to not-quantified levels. Further, dietary blueberries increased the abundance of bacterial taxa that are negatively associated with circulating TMA/TMAO suggesting the role of gut microbes. Our phenolic profiling indicates that this effect could be due to chlorogenic acid and increased phenolic contents in blueberries. Our study provides evidence for considering dietary blueberries to reduce TMAO and prevent TMAO-induced complications.

BACKGROUND: Dietary interventions are crucial in modulating inflammation in humans. Strawberries are enjoyed by people of different ages as a result of their attractive phenotype and taste. In addition, the active compounds in strawberries may contribute to the reduction of inflammation. When developing new strawberry cultivars to address agricultural and environmental threats, the bioactivity of strawberries must be improved to maintain their health benefits. RESULTS: We determined the phytochemical contents of extracts from a new Korean strawberry cultivar, with the CN7 cultivar extract possessing the highest total polyphenol and flavonoid contents compared to the CN5 and Seolhyang cultivar extracts. The new Korean strawberry cultivars reduced the expression of inflammatory-related genes in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells via the nuclear factor-kappa B signaling pathway, indicating an anti-inflammatory effect. The CN7 cultivar showed greater bioactivity potential and the highest ellagic acid content; hence, we assessed the effect of the CN7 cultivar in an LPS-stimulated mouse model. The CN7 cultivar treatment demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing inflammation via the downregulation of inflammatory cytokines secretion and gene expression. CONCLUSION: The results obtained in the present study have revealed the observable differences of the newly developed strawberry cultivars with Seolhyang in mitigating inflammation induced by LPS. The enhanced phytochemical content of the CN7 cultivar extract may contribute to its improved anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain the nutritive benefits of strawberry during the development of new cultivation. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Multi-active food packaging was prepared for strawberry fruit preservation where epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-containing pectin matrix and natamycin (NATA)-containing chitosan (CS) matrix were utilized to complete LBL electrostatic self-assembly. The results showed that the physicochemical properties of the multi-active packaging were closely related to the addition of NATA and EGCG. It was found that NATA and EGCG were embedded in the CS/pectin matrix through intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. The CN/PE 15 % multi-active films prepared based on the spectral stacking theory formed a barrier to UV light in the outer layer, exhibited excellent NATA protection under UV light exposure conditions at different times, and provided long-lasting and sustained bacterial inhibition in the inner layer. In addition, the CN/PE 15 % multi-active packaging extended the shelf life of strawberry at room temperature compared with the control samples. In conclusion, the developed CN/PE 15 % packaging provided potential applications for multi-active food packaging materials.

The Libyan Strawberry, Arbutus pavarii Pampan (ARB), is an endemic Jebel Akhdar plant used for traditional medicine. This study presents the antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties of ARB fruit-extract. ARB phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of 354.54 GAE and 36.2 RE of the phenolics and flavonoids. LC-MS analysis identified 35 compounds belonging to phenolic acids, procyanidins, and flavonoid glycosides. Gallic acid, procyanidin dimer B3, ß-type procyanidin trimer C, and quercetin-3-O-glucoside were the major constituents of the plant extract. ARB administration to paracetamol (PAR)-intoxicated rats reduced serum ALT, AST, bilirubin, hepatic tissue MDA and proinflammatory markers; TNF-α and IL-6 with an increase in tissue GSH level and SOD activity. Histological and immunohistochemical studies revealed that ARB restored the liver histology and significantly reduced the tissue expression of caspase 3, IL-1B, and NF-KB in PAR-induced liver damage. Docking analysis disclosed good binding affinities of some compounds with XO, COX-1, 5-LOX, and PI3K.

The purpose was to assess the effects of a biostimulant based on silicon chelates in terms of alleviation of the impact of in vivo conditions on strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa cv. 'Solnechnaya polyanka') in-vitro-derived plants. As a source of silicon chelates, a mechanocomposite (MC) obtained through mechanochemical processing of rice husks and green tea was used. Root treatment of plants with 0.3 g L-1 of MC dissolved in tap water was performed at 2 weeks after planting. Control plants were watered with tap water. The greatest shoot height, number of roots per plant, root length, number of stolons per plant, daughter ramets per stolon, relative water content, cuticle thickness, and root and shoot biomasses were achieved with the MC supplementation. The improved parameters were associated with a higher silicon content of roots and shoots of the MC-treated plants. Leaf concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and abscisic acid were reduced by the MC. This effect was accompanied by enhanced activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase. The phenolic profile showed upregulation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, gallic acid, syringic acid, and ellagic acid derivative 2, while kaempferol rutinoside and catechins were downregulated. Thus, silicon chelates improve growth and trigger the physiological processes that enhance free-radical-scavenging activity in strawberry plants in vivo.

This study aimed to investigate the application of biopolymeric materials (chitosan, gelatin, and pomegranate peel extract as photosensitizer) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the physicochemical and microbial safety of strawberries. The photosensitizer potential of the materials was confirmed by a light-dose-dependent photobleaching profile. The application of light (525 nm; 50 J cm-2) decreased by >2 log CFU mL-1 the survival of Staphylococcus aureus on the surface of the photoactive-biopolymeric films. Moreover, the materials did not present in vivo cytotoxicity using Danio rerio (Zebrafish) as well as cytophytotoxic, genotoxic, or mutagenic potentials against Allium cepa plant model, which points out their safety to be used as films without posing a risk to the humans and the environment. The photoactive-polymeric coatings were able to maintain the strawberries weight, and the association with green light was 100 % effective in delaying fungal contamination. These coated-strawberries presented a significant reduction in S. aureus survival after light application (5.47-4.34 log CFU mL-1). The molecular level analysis of the photoactive compound cyanidin-3-glucoside indicates absorption on UV-Vis consistent with aPDT action. Therefore, this study showed that the antimicrobial effects of aPDT combined with photoactive-biopolymeric coatings were enhanced, while the quality of the strawberries was maintained.

The valorisation and conservation of plant genetic resources (PGRs) and wild fruit PGRs are critical to ensure the maintenance of genetic and cultural heritage and to promote new perspectives on resource use. New strategies to characterize PGRs are needed, and the omics approach can provide information that is still largely unknown. The Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) is an underutilized, drought and fire-resistant species distributed in the Mediterranean area and its berries have large ethnobotanical use. Although their phenolic profile and antioxidant capacity are known, they are not well characterised, particularly from a proteomic perspective. The aim of this work is the characterisation of two ecotypes of A. unedo (Campania and Sicily) from a molecular viewpoint to valorise and encourage the preservation of this wild fruit. Samples were collected from two different geographical areas to assess whether different geographical conditions could influence the characteristics of leaves and fruits at the three stages of ripening (green, veraison, red). Proteomic analysis identified 904 proteins, of which 122 showed significance along the ripening. Some of these differentially abundant proteins, such as chalcone synthase, show a marked increase during ripening. The protein functional classes with the highest representation are involved in protein and amino acid metabolism, glycolysis and in secondary metabolism. From a proteomic perspective, there are no differences between the fruits from the two regions compared by the ripening stage. However, the pedoclimatic metabolic imprinting allowed the observation of good diversity in the metabolomic profiles between the two ecotypes, especially for anthocyanins, 4 times more abundant in the Sicilian veraisoned fruit than in the Campania one, and catechins, with double the abundance in the Campania ecotype compared to the Sicilian ecotype in the green phase, but more abundant (3x) in the Sicilian veraisoned fruit. Phenolic compounds show a 20% greater abundance in the Campania green arbutus fruit than in the Sicilian one, values that then equalise as ripening progresses. Multi-omic characterisation enhanced the knowledge on a wild fruit plant species which shows specific adaptations and responses to the environment to be considered when addressing the issue of local agrobiodiversity.

Obesity and diabetes are some of the most important modern health problems requiring simple preventative or palliative measures using dietary means. This study investigated the impact of strawberry juice on diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in rats using a single intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ). Fifty male rats were divided into five groups: normal control (NC), strawberry juice only (S), diabetic control (DC), and two diabetic groups treated with strawberry juice (DC + S) or metformin (DC + met). Rats were administered a single dose of both strawberry juice and oral metformin, and biochemical and histological analyses were conducted. The experiment was conducted in compliance with the Ethics Committee's regulations for the care and utilization of animals, microorganisms, and living cell cultures in education and scientific research at the Faculty of Agriculture, Minia University (MU/FA/006/12/22). Treatment of diabetic rats with strawberry juice led to a significant decrease in blood glucose. Insulin levels were also significantly increased, while lipid profiles were lowered in the diabetic rats treated with strawberry juice. Carbohydrate metabolism enzymes and antioxidant enzyme activities in the treated rats were restored to normal levels, and the levels of lipid peroxidation and proinflammatory cytokines were notably reduced. The microstructure of pancreatic and liver cells in diabetic rats was also improved with strawberry juice treatment. In addition, HPLC analysis revealed that strawberry juice was rich in flavonoids and phenolic compounds and exhibited potent antioxidant activity. These findings suggest that strawberry juice has considerable hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects on rats with diabetes which may be used in human after further investigations.

In this paper, several technologies suitable for strawberry crops, such as armyworm boards, tank-mix adjuvants, mist sprayers combined with pesticide reduction, and biostimulant nano-selenium, were comprehensively applied and evaluated. The combined use of 60% etoxazole and bifenazate, bucket mixing additives, nano-selenium, and mist sprayers achieved an 86% prevention effect on red spiders. The prevention effect of pesticides according to the recommended dosage was 91%. Similarly, the disease index of strawberry powdery mildew in the green control group (60% carbendazim, bucket mixing additives, nano-selenium, and mist sprayer) decreased from 33.16 to 11.11, with a decrease of 22.05. The disease index of the control group decreased from 29.69 to 8.06, with a decrease of 21.63. Additionally, the combination of pesticide reduction and nano-selenium significantly improved the antioxidant activity and soluble sugar level of strawberry fruit and reduced water loss during storage. Therefore, the integrated application of green control technologies is beneficial for reducing the amount of chemical pesticides and improving their effectiveness, while enhancing the quality of strawberry fruits in disease and pest control.

This study investigated the digestive stability of anthocyanins (ACNs) and their interaction with three pectin fractions-water-soluble pectin (WSP), cyclohexanetrans-1,2-diamine tetra-acetic acid-soluble pectin (CSP), and sodium carbonate-soluble pectin (NSP)-in strawberry pulp processed by pasteurization (PS), ultrasound (US), electron beam (EB) irradiation, and high pressure (HP). Compared with the control group, the ACNs content increased to the highest level (312.89 mg/mL), but the retention rate of ACNs in the simulated intestine decreased significantly after US treatment. The monosaccharide compositions indicated that the WSP and CSP possessed more homogalacturonan (HG) domains than the NSP, which contains more rhamngalacturonan-I (RG-I) domains. The microstructure of US-treated pectin was damaged and fragmented. Comprehensive analysis showed that the retention rate of ACNs was closely related to the pectin structure, primarily reflected by the degree of linearity and the integrity of structure. These results revealed the structure-activity relationship between ACNs and pectin during pulp processing.

Phytochemical nanoencapsulation for nutrient delivery and edible coatings for perishable food preservation are two emerging technologies. Leveraging the strong antimicrobial function of phytochemical nutrients, we propose convergent research to integrate the two technologies by embedding phytochemical-encapsulated nanoparticles in an edible coating on fresh fruits to achieve multiple functions. In particular, we report the study of an edible coating on strawberries that is composited of trans-resveratrol (R)-encapsulated nanoparticles (RNPs) embedded in a chitosan (CS) matrix. The biodegradable and biocompatible RNPs significantly increased the aqueous solubility of R by 150-fold and bioavailability by 3.5-fold after oral administration. Our results demonstrated the abilities of the RNP-embedded CS edible coating to diminish dehydration, prevent nutrient loss, inhibit microbe growth, increase nutraceutical value, preserve strawberry quality, and extend shelf life during storage at both 22 and 4 °C. Such a phytochemical nanoencapsulation-based edible coating is promising for the dual purposes of enhancing nutrient delivery and preserving perishable foods.

The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.), an evergreen bush to small tree of the Ericaceae family, is a main component of the natural flora of the Mediterranean basin that also grows profusely through the Iberian Peninsula, southwestern France, and Ireland. The small edible red fruits are usually used to produce preserves, jams, and liquors, as the Portuguese "aguardente de medronho". The leaves and fruits have been used for a long time in traditional medicine, and their bioactive compounds are presently the subject of intense research. A strawberry tree germplasm collection was recently established by the company Corte Velada (Odiáxere, Portugal). A set of 50 germplasm accessions was selected for a breeding program. A next-generation sequencing project was performed, resulting in the establishment of the first strawberry tree genome assembly and further identification of 500 SSR and 500 SNP loci. Individual molecular fingerprints for the unequivocal identification of the selected 50 accessions were established based on 71 markers alleles amplified by 4 SSR and 9 SNP markers. The same species-specific markers alleles combined with 61 random amplified markers amplified by 5 RAPD and 5 ISSR primers were used to assess the genetic variability and genetic relationships among the selected accessions.

A low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with an encapsulated bioactive formulation (cinnamon essential oil + silver nanoparticles) was developed for preservation of fresh strawberries. Antimicrobial activity of the active LDPE films was tested against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella typhimurium, Aspergillus niger, and Penicillium chrysogenum by agar volatilization assay. The optimal condition of the films showed ≥75% inhibitory capacity against the tested microbes. Strawberries were stored with different types of films: Group 1 (control): (LDPE + CNCs + Glycerol), Group 2: (LDPE + CNCs + Glycerol + AGPPH silver nanoparticles), Group 3: (LDPE + CNCs + Glycerol + cinnamon), Group 4: (LDPE + CNCs + Glycerol + active formulation), and Group 5: (LDPE + CNCs + Glycerol + active formulation + 0.5 kGy γ-radiation) at 4°C for 12 days. Weight loss (WL) (%), decay (%), firmness (N), color, and total phenolics and anthocyanin content of the strawberries were measured. Results showed that the most effective LDPE-nanocomposite film for reducing the microbial growth was LDPE + CNCs + Glycerol + active formulation film (Group 4). When combined with γ-irradiation (0.5 kGy), the LDPE + CNCs + Glycerol + active formulation (Group 5) significantly reduced both decay and WL by 94%, as compared to the control samples after 12 days of storage. Total phenols (from 952 to 1711 mg/kg) and anthocyanin content (from 185 to 287 mg/kg) increased with storage time under the different treatments. The mechanical properties, water vapor permeability (WVP), and surface color of the films were also tested. Though the WVP of the films were not influenced by the types of antimicrobial agents, they did significantly (p ≤ 0.05) change color and mechanical properties of the films. Therefore, combined treatment of active film and γ-irradiation has potential as an alternative method for extending the shelf-life of storage strawberries while maintaining fruit quality. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Bioactive Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) nanocomposite film was developed in the study by incorporating active formulation (essential oil and silver nanoparticle) to extend the shelf life of stored strawberries. The bioactive LDPE-based nanocomposite film along with γ-irradiation could be used to preserve fruits for long-term storage by controlling the growth of foodborne pathogenic bacteria and spoilage fungi.

Fragaria nubicola, known as Tibetan strawberry, is an edible plant possessing various health-promoting effects. However, its functional compositions were rarely studied. In this work, monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitors in this plant were rapidly screened using the enzyme-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles coupled with UPLC-QTOF-MS. Two inhibitors, quercetin-3-O-ß-d-glucuronide-6″-methyl ester (1) and kaempferol-3-O-ß-d-glucuronide-6″-methyl ester (2), were identified from this plant with the IC50 values of 19.44 ± 1.17 and 22.63 ± 1.78 µM, respectively. Enzyme kinetic analysis and molecular docking were carried out to investigate the mechanism of inhibition. Contents of both compounds as well as those of total phenolics and flavonoids were quantified to be 24.76 ± 1.26, 35.59 ± 1.17, 837.67 ± 10.62, and 593.46 ± 10.37 µg/g, respectively. In addition, both compounds exhibited significant neuroprotective effects on 6-hydroxydopamine-induced PC12 cells. This is the first report on the neuroprotective components of F. nubicola, suggesting its potential for developing neuroprotective functional food.
