RESUMO

Abdominal wall reconstruction techniques have evolved significantly over the last fifty years and continue to do so at an increasing pace. Beginning with open incisional hernia repair with bilateral rectus myofascial release, multiple techniques to offset tension at the midline by exploring options of layered myofascial release have been described. This article reviews the history, technique, advancements, and future of myofascial release in abdominal wall reconstruction leading from the open Rives-Stoppa repair to the robotic-assisted iteration of the transversus abdominis release.

The removal of nitrogen from coal tar pitch (CTP) through the hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of CTP and its molecular behavior were evaluated in the presence of NiMo/γ-alumina and CoMo/γ-alumina catalysts. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure photoionization was used to analyze the complicated chemical classes and species of CTP and the treated products at the molecular level. Nitrogen species were qualitatively analyzed before and after hydrotreatment. A single-stage hydrotreatment with an HDN catalyst resulted in a high sulfur removal performance (85.6-94.7%) but a low nitrogen removal performance (26.8-29.2%). Based on relative abundance analyses of nitrogen and binary nitrogen species, CcHh-NnSs was the most challenging species to remove during HDN treatment. Furthermore, prior hydrodesulfurization was combined with HDN treatment, and the dual hydrotreatments yielded a significantly improved nitrogen removal performance (46.4-48.7%).

The deposition of tar balls of unknown sources on the coast poses a great threat to the fishery, tourism and coastal biodiversity in the Bohai Sea. This work aimed to identify the sources of tar balls by using oil fingerprint technique. Tar ball samples were collected from the seashore of two islands of the western Bohai Sea and divided into two groups (Group I and Group II). Principal component analysis showed that although Caofeidian oilfield was one of the closest oilfields to the sampling area it was not a source. Fingerprints of characteristic hopanes and steranes showed that samples of Group I were similar to the crude oils from the nearby Jidong oilfield, and samples of Group II were similar to the Penglai-19-3 crude oils. Combined with cross-plots of the samples and the reference oils, it indicated that Group I may come from Jidong and Group II may come from Penglai-19-3. The weathering characteristics of alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons showed that the samples were affected by natural weathering processes (e.g., evaporation, photooxidation and biodegradation). It revealed that oil pollution from the nearby oilfields can also affect other areas under the influence of ocean circulation. It is the first study on source identification of tar balls from the Bohai Sea and the effects of ocean circulation on the tar ball transport. This study can considerably help to further understand the evolution of tar balls and consequently determine their sources.

Deposition of tar balls on the Qinhuangdao beaches along the coasts of the Bohai Sea (China) could affect people's leisure activities and tourism, and even affect the marine ecosystem. In 2020, representative tar balls collected from Qinhuangdao beaches, fingerprint analysis based on diagnostic ratios suggested that these tar balls were all very similar and may belong to the same source. Source identification by cross plot and principal component analysis (PCA), showed that the tar balls were likely from Penglai 19-3 crude oil. The weathering characterizations based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkanes parameters and unresolved complex mixture (UCM), indicated that the tar balls had been significantly influenced by natural weathering processes such as evaporation, biodegradation and photooxidation. The study of this leakage provides a powerful support for determining the leakage source, evaluating the potential weathering mechanism and determining the accident liability. This is the first time to use fingerprint technology to identify the source of tar balls in Qinhuangdao coastal zone in the Bohai Sea.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Throughout history, Humans have always used tar for different purposes such as gluing materials, waterproofing, and conserving wood, but today, it is also used in medicines and cosmetics. Many countries around the world, Norway and Morocco to name a few, obtain tar from endemic trees. In a process of dry distillation, the organic material, endemic trees in this case, is exposed to a high temperature with a restricted amount of oxygen. Eventually, it cracks the large molecules in the matter and turns it into tar. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review article sheds light on tar production and the species that have been used in the process. Equal emphasis is placed on its uses, chemical composition, and toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines have been used to review this article. The review is put together from various articles, theses, documents in "Science Direct", "Hal (Archive ouvert)", "Web of knowledge" without limitation date. RESULTS: It turns out that tar can be produced by 18 tree taxonomic families, notably Cupressaceae, Pinaceae, and Betulaceae. As for the production techniques, two methods are considered: Per ascensum and Per descensum, which can take different forms. The chemical composition of tar consists of acids, phenols, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The uses of tar have changed over time, while its toxicity is strongly related to its chemical composition. CONCLUSIONS: The different species used in tar production have been highlighted in this research review. Equal importance has been given to its methods of extraction, uses and its chemical components. We hope that future studies will focus more on these species used to produce tar in other biological activities.

Large volumes of waste petroleum coke stockpiled in open yard not only represent a huge loss of valuable material but also pose a significant risk to the environment. This work proposed an innovative strategy for waste petroleum coke valorization by exploring its catalytic performance of biomass gasification tar destruction. Waste petroleum coke was firstly activated by potassium hydroxide (KOH) to obtain high specific surface area as well as low sulfur and ash contents. Petroleum coke derived catalyst showed superior performance than a commercial activated carbon derived catalyst for destruction of naphthalene as the tar model compound. The petroleum coke derived catalyst exhibited 99.1% naphthalene destruction efficiency at 800 °C but deactivated quickly under N2 atmosphere. Under H2 and steam atmospheres, the catalytic activities were 98.6% and 96.5% for 8 h, respectively. To study the correlation between catalytic performance and the structure of carbon catalyst, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET) analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) analysis and Raman spectroscopy were performed on both fresh and spent catalysts. Results demonstrated that the hydrogen-rich groups (small rings and amorphous carbon) and oxygen-containing groups may account for the good resistance to coke deposition under H2 and steam atmospheres.

Background: Scalp psoriasis is usually refractory to treatment. Excimer devices have been proved to be a promising therapeutic option in psoriasis. Greater efficacy of phototherapy can be achieved by concurrent use of coal tar derivatives. Objective: We aimed to compare efficacy and safety between 308-nm excimer lamp monotherapy and a combination of 308-nm excimer lamp and 10% liquor carbonis detergens in the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Methods: In this randomized, evaluator-blinded, prospective, comparative study, 30 patients with scalp psoriasis received either 308-nm excimer lamp monotherapy or a combination of 308-nm excimer lamp and 10% liquor carbonis detergens twice per week until complete remission of the scalp or for a total of 30 sessions. Efficacy was evaluated by the improvement of Psoriasis Scalp Severity Index (PSSI) score, itch score, and Scalpdex score. Results: Both treatments induced significant improvement in PSSI score with greater reduction observed in the combination group. At 30th visit, a 75% reduction in PSSI (PSSI75) was attained by 4 (28.6%) and 9 (69.2%) patients treated with monotherapy and combination therapy, respectively (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Excimer lamp is well-tolerated in patients with scalp psoriasis and liquor carbonis detergens can be used as a combination therapy to improve the efficacy of excimer lamp.

Unlike native polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), quantitation of substituted polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) has been a challenge in the environmental industry. The challenge can be attributed in part to the large number of theoretically possible isomers and the lack of authentic standards for quantitation. In addition, the lack of a unified approach to the quantitation of these compounds has led to poor interlaboratory accuracy. Because these compounds are often used for toxicology studies or to delineate sources and fingerprinting, it is vital that a standardized approach to quantify them is established. This study evaluated different quantitation approaches to quantify both 16 individual PACs and 32 groups/clusters of substituted PACs in three standard reference materials (SRM 1944 - New York / New Jersey waterway sediments, SRM 1597 - a coal tar sample and SRM 2779 - Gulf of Mexico crude oil). The methods employed include: (1) external calibration taking into account recovery correction factor for each analyte, (2) an average relative response factor (ARRF) of PACs obtained with a recovery correction, (3) ARRF of PACs obtained using uncorrected peak areas (i.e., no recovery correction), (4) ARRF of PACs calculated by normalization to deuterated PAHs and (5) ARRF of native PAHs to quantify substituted PACs. The evaluation of concentrations of individually substituted PACs from the different quantitative approaches compared to the certified/reference values showed that methods 1, 2 and 3 performed best. The average percentage of compounds that fell within our acceptable limit (±30%) using methods 1, 2 and 3 for SRM-1944, -1597a and -2779 was 87, 75 and 100%, respectively. Using native PAHs to quantify their substituted analogs resulted in data of the poorest quality. Irrespective of the approach used, there were significant systematic errors in measurements on clusters/groups PACs most notably C1 and C2-benzanthracenes/ chrysenes/triplenylenes, and C2- and C3-dibenzothiophenes being consistently greater than 100% of the stated value. Commerical availability of more substituted PACs will mitigate the biases associated with the quanititation of PAC clusters/groups.

Semi-solid crude oil has been known to wash ashore along the South Australian coastline for over 120 years. The early reports pre-date offshore petroleum exploration and tanker shipping activities in Australian waters, suggesting that this stranded oil originates from natural offshore seepage. Three physically distinct varieties are represented: waxy bitumen, asphaltite and tar. In order to distinguish this natural "background" contamination of the coastline from any potential anthropogenic sources of petroleum, such as oil spills, whole-oil GC-MS analysis was employed to identify at least seven geochemically different types of stranded oil, based on a suite of 633 specimens collected from the coastline during three annual surveys of 30 ocean beaches between 2014 and 2016. The waxy bitumens, which in terms of their biomarker alkanes display an atypical pattern of alteration due to weathering in the marine environment, are more severely altered than similar specimens collected 25 years ago.

PURPOSE: Myofascial release techniques at the time of complex hernia repair allow for tension-free closure of the midline fascia. Two common techniques are the open external oblique release (EOR) and the transversus abdominis release (TAR). Each technique has its reported advantages and disadvantages, but there have been few comparative studies. The purpose of this project was to compare the outcomes of these two myofascial release techniques. METHODS: The Americas Hernia Society Quality Collaborative (AHSQC) database was queried and produced a data set on 24 May 2018. All patients undergoing open incision hernia repair with an open EOR or TAR were evaluated, and outcomes were compared including hernia recurrence, quality of life, and 30-day wound-related complications. RESULTS: 3610 patients met the inclusion criteria of undergoing open incisional hernia repair (501 undergoing EOR and 3109 undergoing TAR). Seventy surgeons from 50 institutions contributed EOR patients, and 124 surgeons from 89 institutions contributed TAR patients with no differences between the two groups in surgeons' affiliation. Comparing open EOR and TAR showed no significant differences in hernia recurrence, quality of life, or 30-day surgical site infection rate. EOR had a significantly higher rate of surgical site occurrences compared with TAR (p < 0.05); however, this did not result in an increase in surgical site occurrences requiring procedural interventions. CONCLUSIONS: Equivalent outcomes were achieved using the EOR or TAR techniques in the open repair of incisional hernias. Both techniques offer consistently good outcomes and are important adjuncts in the repair of complex incisional hernias.

Spectroscopic techniques including X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and attenuated total reflectance - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) are used to examine oil residues persisting on shorelines in Prince William Sound that originate from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and oil released as a consequence of the 1964 Great Alaska earthquake. When coupled to classification models, ATR-FTIR and XRF spectral data can be used to distinguish between the two sources of oil with 92% and 86% success rates for the two techniques respectively. Models indicate that the ATR-FTIR data used to determine oil source includes the CO stretch, the twisting-scissoring of the CH2 group, and the CC stretch. For XRF data, decision tree models primarily utilize the abundance of nickel and zinc present in the oil as a means to classify source. This approach highlights the utility of rapid, field-based spectroscopic techniques to distinguish different inputs of oil to coastal environments.

In this study a novel sustainable method based on supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method was developed for simultaneous extraction and fractionation of petroleum biomarkers. We herein proposed a two-step supercritical fluid extraction method for crude oil and tar ball to separate the petroleum biomarkers into aliphatic and aromatic fractions. In the first step, pure scCO2 was used, while scCO2 modified was used as a solvent in the subsequent step. CO2 SFE can serve as an environmental-friendly alternative to common column chromatography method for petroleum biomarker or compositional analysis by GC-MS. The extraction process was shown to be selective, according to the polarity of the solvent, providing fractionation of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Yet the total extraction procedure in SFE was significantly faster than column chromatography methods (~80 min vs. 8 h). We will discuss the implications of this SFE method as a novel sustainable alternative to the existing extraction techniques.

Goeckerman therapy is a highly effective treatment regimen for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. It involves regular exposure to ultraviolet B radiation and the application of crude coal tar. To our knowledge, only three centers in the USA currently offer a formal Goeckerman therapy treatment program; thus, access to this therapy is geographically limited. In this article, a motivated patient discusses his experience with generalized plaque psoriasis. This patient, while living in a Goeckerman-inaccessible area, deferred treatment with biologics and outpatient phototherapy to develop a modified Goeckerman regimen for at-home use. This home regimen, which did not involve the use of prescription-strength medications, resulted in full clearance of his psoriasis. We also discuss the patient's case from the perspective of a dermatology treatment team that has reviewed his experience.

Background and objectives: The carcinogenicity of coal tar pitch (CTP) to occupational workers has been confirmed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, especially for lung cancer. Herein, we explored the dynamic changes of epigenetic modifications in the malignant transformation process of CTP-induced BEAS-2B cells and also provided clues for screening early biomarkers of CTP-associated occupational lung cancer. Methods: BEAS-2B cells treated with 3.0 µg/mL CTP extract (CTPE) were cultured to the 30th passage to set up a malignant transformation model, which was confirmed by platelet clone formation assay and xenograft assay. DNA methylation levels were determined by ultraviolet-high performance liquid chromatography. mRNA levels in cells and protein levels in supernatants were respectively detected by Real-Time PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The number of clones and the ability of tumor formation in nude mice of CTPE-exposed BEAS-2B cells at 30th passage were significantly increased compared to vehicle control. Moreover, genomic DNA methylation level was down-regulated. The mRNA levels of DNMT1, DNMT3a and HDAC1 as well as the expression of DNMT1 protein were up-regulated since the 10th passage. From the 20th passage, the transcriptional levels of DNMT3b, let-7a and the expression of DNMT3a, DNMT3b, and HDAC1 proteins were detected to be higher than vehicle control, while the level of miR-21 increased only at the 30th passage. Conclusion: Data in this study indicated that the changes of epigenetic molecules including DNMT1, DNMT3a, DNMT3b, HDAC1, and let-7a occurred at the early stages of BEAS-2B cell malignant transformation after CTPE exposure, which provided critical information for screening early biomarkers of CTP-associated occupational lung cancer.

Coastal areas within the Bushehr Province (BP), Persian Gulf, Iran, face great challenges due to the heavy organic contamination caused by rapid industrialization, and the presence of numerous oil fields. In addition, in 2014, a significant number of tar balls are found along the coasts of BP. A total of 96 samples (48 coastal sediments and 48 tar balls) were taken from eight sampling points at the BP coast during the summer of 2014. These samples were analyzed to identify the sources and characteristics of their organic matter using diagnostic ratios and fingerprint analysis based on the distribution of the source-specific biomarkers of n-alkanes, PAHs,1 hopanes and steranes. Mean concentration of n-alkanes (µg g-1 dw) and PAHs (ng g-1 dw) varied respectively from 405 to 220,626, and 267 to 23,568 in coastal sediments, while ranged respectively from 664 to 145,285 and 390 to 46,426 in tar balls. In addition, mean concentration of hopanes and steranes (ng g-1 dw) were between 18.17 and 3349 and 184.66 to 1578 in coastal sediments, whereas in tar balls were 235-1899 and 520-1504, respectively. Pri/Phy2 ratio was 0.25 to 1.51 (0.65) and 0.36 to 1 (0.63) in coastal sediment and tar ball samples, respectively, and the occurrence of UCM3 in both matrices, reflecting the petrogenic OM4 inputs and chronic oil contamination, respectively. The C30 and C29 homologues followed Gammacerane were detected in both matrices, in particular those collected from intensive industrial activities, suggesting petrogenic sources of OM. The coastal sediment PAHs profiles were significantly dominated by HMW5-PAHs in the Bahregan Beach (BAB) (78% of total PAHs), Bandare-Genaveh (GP) (66%), and Bandare-Bushehr (BUB) (61%) stations, while the Bashi Beach (BSB) (40%), Bandare-Kangan (KP) (57%), and Bandare-Asaluyeh (AP) (51%) stations exhibited higher proportion of LMW6-PAHs. PCA7 indicated that the tar ball and coastal sediment samples deposited along the Southwest of the BP beaches are most likely originated from the Abuzar oil. Based on the intensity of the anthropogenic activities, NPMDS8 analysis revealed that the GP, BAB, NNP, AP, and KP sampling sites had a high concentration of detected organic pollutants. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that investigates oil pollution in costal sediments and tar balls in the BP, providing insights in to the fate of oil in the coastal areas of the Persian Gulf, Iran.

In situ delivery of liquid reagents in vadose zone is limited by soil anisotropy and gravity. The enhanced delivery of persulfate (PS) as oxidant, using a new foam-based method (F-PS) was compared at bench-scale to traditional water-based (W-PS) and surfactant solution-based (S-PS) deliveries. The goal was to distribute PS uniformly in coal tar-contaminated unsaturated and anisotropic soils, both in terms of permeability and contamination. Water was the less efficiently delivered fluid because of the hydrophobicity of the contaminated soils. Surfactant enhanced PS-distribution into contaminated zones by reducing interfacial tension and inverting soil wettability. Regardless of coal tar contamination contrasts (0 vs. 5 and 1 vs. 10 g kg soil-1) or strong permeability contrasts, PS-solution injection after foam injection led to the most uniform reagents delivery. While PS-concentration varied more than 5-times between zones using W-PS and S-PS methods, it varied less than 1.6-times when the F-PS one was used. Finally, despite unfavorable conditions, the foam-based method did not show any detrimental effect regarding the oxidation of hydrocarbons compared to the W-PS and S-PS methods carried out in ideal conditions. Moreover, hydrocarbon degradation rates were slightly higher when using F-PS than S-PS due to a lower surfactant content in the targeted zone.

RESUMO

Oil residues originating from the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) incident persist on Gulf of Mexico beaches alongside oil from offshore industrial activity, natural seepage, and asphalt from parking lots and roads. To determine the primary differences in the chemical composition of these oil residues, a variety of samples were collected from beaches from Florida to Alabama over a two-year period from 2015 to 2017. Bulk chemical characteristics of the oil residues were examined via gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and mass spectrometry (GC-MS), as well as thin layer chromatography with flame ionization detection (TLC-FID), and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR). These bulk chemical analyses revealed features unique to the different sample types, expanding our understanding of the chemical composition and variability of persistent oil residues, and providing a means to detect and monitor their long-term fate in the coastal environment.

Methods to remediate soil and groundwater contamination at former manufactured gas plant (FMGP) sites are scarce. The objective of this study was to investigate the ability of two chemical oxidants (persulfate and permanganate) to degrade FMGP residuals in a dynamic system representative of in situ conditions. A series of physical model trials supported by aqueous and slurry batch experiments using impacted sediments collected from a FMGP site were conducted. To explore treatment expectations a screening model constrained by the experimental data was employed. The results from the aqueous experiments showed that dissolved components (except for benzene) were readily degraded by persulfate or permanganate. In the well-mixed slurry systems, when contact with the oxidant was achieved, 95%, 45% and 30% of the initial mass quantified was degraded by permanganate, unactivated persulfate, and alkaline activated persulfate, respectively. In stark contrast, the total mass removed in the physical model trials was negligible for both permanganate and persulfate irrespective of the bleb or lense architecture used. Hence the net benefit of flushing 6 pore volumes of permanganate or persulfate at a concentration of 30 g/L under the physical model operating conditions was minimal. To achieve a substantial degradation of mass within the treatment system (>40%), results from the screening model indicated that the hydraulic resident time would need to be >10 days and the average lumped mass transfer coefficient increased by two orders-of-magnitude. Results from long-term (5 years) simulations showed that the dissolved concentrations of organic compounds are reduced temporarily as a result of the presence of permanganate but then rebound to a profile that is essentially coincident with a no-treatment scenario following exposure to permanganate. Neither a lower velocity nor higher permanganate dosing affected the long-term behavior of the dissolved phase concentrations; however, increasing the mass transfer rate coefficient had an impact. The findings from this investigation indicate that the efficiency of permanganate or persulfate to treat for FMGP residuals is mass transfer limited.

Chemical analysis of soils contaminated with coal tar indicated that most organic compounds, and particularly PAHs, were contained in coarser particles (> 200 µm). Microscopic observations of this fraction, carried out on polished sections, reported the presence of organic particles in addition to mineral particles. Some organic particles had a very low porosity, and their microstructure did not evolve during biotreatment. Alternatively, other organic particles had a large porosity composed of an interconnected pore network that was open to coal tar surface and thus in contact with soil water. Interconnected porosity seemed to increase during biotreatment in relation to a decrease in the amount of organic compounds. The amount of open porosity in contact with soil water was expected to increase the desorption rate of PAHs. Consequently, the environmental hazard could depend on the amount of open porosity in addition to chemical properties of organic particles, such as their concentration in PAHs. Thus, microscopy can be complementary to chemical analysis and ecotoxicological assays to assess the best strategy for remediation but also to follow the advancement of a biotreatment.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sphagnum mosses and peat could have been utilized as wound dressings for centuries, however reliable data on this subject are ambiguous; sometimes even no distinction between peat moss (Sphagnum spp.) and peat is made or these terms become confused. The first scientific account on surgical use of peat comes from 1882: a peat digger who successfully, by himself and in the way unknown to the then medicine, cured an open fracture of his forearm with peat. The peat, and very soon the peat moss itself (which is the major constituent of peat) drew attention of the 19th-century surgeons. AIMS OF THE WORK: We search for reliable information on: (1) inspirations for Sphagnum usage for medical purposes and its beginnings in the 19th century, (2) substances or products named sphagnol and their connections with (1); (3) on the origin of this name, (4) and on the occurrence of this name in medical sources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have identified and studied published sources on the uses of peat-based and Sphagnum-based preparations and products of any processing level (including herbal stock, distillate, isolated pure or impure active principle, or a mixture of such) in surgery, pharmacy or cosmetics. A special attention was paid to the name sphagnol, which appeared many a time, in more than one context since 1899. Source publications were critically analysed from the taxonomical, pharmacognostical and ethnopharmacological points of view. Gathered data were cross-checked with the modern knowledge of the biologically active principles of Sphagnum and the prospects of their medical use. RESULTS: The application of peat in surgery started 1882. The use of peat moss as dressings was developed in the 1880's. It returned to surgical practice during WW1. The name sphagnol has two meanings: (1) A chemical substance isolated from the cell walls of Sphagnum mosses in 1899. A post-1950 research showed it to be a mixture of phenols dominated by sphagnum acid. (2) A product of dry distillation of peat contains solid and liquid fractions and was applied in skin diseases due to antiseptic properties. It was added to ointments and medicated soaps manufactured up to the late 1960's. Today none of these two sphagnols is in use. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical application of peat had an ethnopharmacological origin: a case of wound treatment with peat as a remedy rather than a dressing (1880, published 1882) shortly shifted the surgeons' attention to peat moss as an absorptive dressing. The 1880's tests of antiseptic properties of peat and peat moss failed, the sterilization methods overrode the physiological effects of Sphagnum dressings. Sphagnan, a polysaccharide from Sphagnum cell walls, discovered 1983, inhibits microbial growth, tans the collagen and removes ammonia from microbial environments. Portions of raw peat could be sterile. The isolation of sphagnol (1899) from Sphagnum cell walls was not inspired by old surgery. Main component of sphagnol, the sphagnic acid, was used clinically during WW2, but was proved a weak antimicrobial agent. A homonymous name sphagnol appeared independently for a product of dry distillation of peat, introduced commercially probably about 1899, too, which gave rise to confusions: a) the commercial, "distilled" sphagnol was not the crystalline principle of Sphagnum cell walls. 2) the "distilled" sphagnol was hardly defined technologically or pharmacologically, never standardized in terms of the substrate (a variety of peat rather than Sphagnum herb) and the production process. This sphagnol, resembling pitch or tar, was an additive to medicated soaps and ointments for skin treatment and care. It must have been a low-scale product although advertised worldwide. Neither sphagnum acid nor sphagnan are used medicinally today.
