Cancer ranks among the foremost causes of mortality worldwide, posing a significant threat to human lives. The advent of tumor immunotherapy has substantially transformed the therapeutic landscape for numerous advanced malignancies, notably non-small cell lung cancer and melanoma. However, as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are increasingly applied in clinical settings, a spectrum of undesired reactions, termed immune-related adverse events (irAEs), has emerged. These adverse reactions are associated with immunotherapy and can result in varying degrees of harm to the human body. Among these reactions, Immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced colitis (ICIIC) stands out as one of the most prevalent clinical adverse events. In contemporary times, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in addressing various maladies. Consequently, investigating the potential application and mechanisms of Chinese medicine in countering immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced colitis assumes significant importance in the treatment of this condition.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In recent years, Chinese herbal medicine has gained more and more recognition in disease prevention and control due to its low toxicity and comprehensive treatment. C. morifolium (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.), as the medicine food homology plant with the bioactivity of anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotection and cardiovascular protection, has important therapeutic effects and health benefits for colds, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases and various chronic diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY: By reviewing the historical development, classification and distribution of germplasm resources, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and modern application of C. morifolium, the paper provides a reliable basis for the further research and application of chrysanthemum as therapeutic agents and functional additives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The literature and information about C. morifolium published in the last ten years were collected from various platforms, including Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science and China Knowledge Network. RESULTS: A comprehensive analysis confirmed that C. morifolium originated in China, and it went through the development process from food and tea to medicine for more than 3000 years. During this period, different cultivars emerged through several breeding techniques and were distributed throughout the world. Moreover, A variety of chemical components such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, volatile oils, and terpenes in chrysanthemum have been proven they possess various pharmacology of anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and prevention of chronic diseases by regulating inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress responses and signaling pathways, which are the essential conditions to play a role in TCM, nutraceuticals and diet. CONCLUSION: This paper provides a comprehensive review of historical development, classification, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and modern application of C. morifolium. However, future studies should continue to focus on the bioactive compounds and the synergistic mechanism of the "multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway" of chrysanthemum, and it is necessary to develop more innovative products with therapeutic effects.

Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma (SGR) is recognized in traditional Chinese medicine for its distinctive therapeutic properties and abundant supply. Its phytochemical profile is diverse, encompassing flavonoids, steroids, saccharides, phenolic glycosides, volatile constituents, organic acids, phenylpropanoids, stilbenoids, among others. Recent pharmacological investigations reveal that SGR possesses a broad spectrum of pharmacological effects with multifaceted clinical applications. This review collates the current knowledge on SGR's chemical composition, pharmacological activities, and its clinical utility. Utilizing network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches, this study provides a preliminary identification of potential quality markers (Q-Markers) within SGR. The findings suggest that compounds such as astilbin, isoengelitin, neoisoastilbin, neoastilbin, astragaloside, diosgenin, resveratrol, stigmasterol, ß-sitosterol, and quercetin in SGR are promising candidates for Q-Markers. While flavonoids are the most extensively studied, there is a pressing need to further explore the active monomeric compounds within SGR. The introduction of Q-Markers is instrumental in developing standardized quality metrics. Specifically, astilbin has been noted for its antitumor, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-hyperuricemic, and hepatoprotective potential, warranting further research for therapeutic applications.

Background: Proprietary Chinese medicine (PCM) is widely used in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China. However, the regulatory frameworks and procedures for PCM registration in the region are not well-established, and there are differences among the three jurisdictions. The study is aimed to compare the legal basis, regulatory guidelines, application requirements, and evaluation criteria in each jurisdiction. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive review of the registration application processes for PCMs in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau based on publicly available information from respective regulators. Results: The study found that the registration application process in the GBA was complex and time-consuming, with differences in requirements and procedures among the three jurisdictions. The study also identified several challenges faced by PCM manufacturers, such as the lack of harmonisation of regulatory requirements and procedures and the requirement of package inserts and labelling for PCM products. The study proposed recommendations for improving the registration process and promoting the development of the PCM industry in the GBA. Conclusion: This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the PCM product license application procedures and requirements in the GBA, coupled with discernment of their similarities and disparities, equips applicants with the knowledge to formulate an appropriate strategy for obtaining product approval. Exploring potential methods for harmonising the regulatory process stands to benefit manufacturers, regulators, and patients by improving efficiency and curtailing costs.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy of comprehensive physical and mental nursing for patients with acute cerebral infarction (ACI) undergoing intravenous thrombolytic therapy and its impact on patients' quality of life and psychological state. METHODS: A total of 200 patients with ACI, admitted to our hospital between December 2018 and December 2019, were included in the study. They were randomly assigned to either the control group or the experimental group using a random number table. The control group received routine care (basic care such as monitoring vital signs, assisting with daily activities, administering medications, and providing comfort measures), while the experimental group received comprehensive physical and mental nursing (physical care, phsycological surpport, education and conceling). Various parameters including quality of life index (QLI) scores, mental status scale in non-psychiatric settings (MSSNS) scores, self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) scores, self-rating depression scale (SDS) scores, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, changes in hemodynamic indicators, and incidence of adverse events during intravenous thrombolysis were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The experimental group had higher QLI scores and lower MSSNS, SAS, SDS, and NIHSS scores compared to the control group (p = 0.33, 0.22, 0.35, 0.26, 0.042). The experimental group also exhibited a lower incidence of adverse reactions during intravenous thrombolysis (p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Comprehensive physical and mental nursing for patients with ACI undergoing intravenous thrombolysis improves nursing efficacy, nursing satisfaction, quality of life, and patients' psychological state. These findings highlight the importance of implementing holistic nursing interventions to optimize patient outcomes in ACI management.

Background: and purpose: Acupuncture and moxibustion, as a complementary and alternative therapy, has been widely used in the treatment of acute gouty arthritis (AGA). However, there are various forms of acupuncture and moxibustion, and the curative effect of different forms is different. This study evaluated the clinical efficacy of different acupuncture therapies in treating AGA by network meta-analysis. Methods: Computer searches of English databases (including PubMed, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, Embase) and Chinese databases (including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP Database, Wanfang Database and China Biomedical Literature Database) were conducted for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture therapies in treating AGA. We set the search time from the database establishment to May 2022. Data analysis was performed using Stata14.2 software. Results: Thirty-two RCTs involving 2434 patients with AGA were screened out. The results showed that in terms of the improvement of pain visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, the top ones were acupoint application (100%), electroacupuncture + Western medicine (73.5%) and acupuncture + Western medicine (69.2%); In terms of total effective rate, acupoint application (85.2%), acupuncture (75.2%) and acupuncture + Western medicine (63%) ranked the top; In terms of reducing serum uric acid (SUA) levels, the top ones were acupoint application (95%), acupuncture + Western medicine (87.5%) and acupuncture (66.2%); In terms of the reduction of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), acupuncture (95%), acupoint application (84.7%), and electroacupuncture + Western medicine (52.8%) were the most prominent. Conclusion: The existing evidence shows that acupoint application has more advantages in improving the total effective rate, improving pain and reduce SUA levels, and acupuncture has an advantage in reducing ESR levels and adverse events. However, due to the low qualities of the original studies, the quality of this evidence is poor. Therefore, it is recommended that more scientific research be performed to confirm the efficacy of acupuncture.

Odor is one of the important indicators evaluating the quality of traditional Chinese medicines. Research data has shown that there are increasing methods available for evaluating the odors of traditional Chinese medicines. Compared with conventional odor sensing techniques, electronic noses stand out for their convenience, high speed, and objectivity. The progress in the pharmaceutical technology of traditional Chinese medicines has provided new formulas and dosage forms for the innovative development in this field. The electronic nose with versatility can be customized to be equipped with a variety of cross-sensors, which can well satisfy the needs of the traditional Chinese medicine preparation technology. This study summarizes the characteristics, application status, and representative products of the current electronic nose, and analyzes the application and feasibility of electronic nose in the production of traditional Chinese medicine preparations based on the current status of odor evaluation. This review is expected to provide new methods, techno-logies, and ideas for electronic nose to play its unique role in the whole-process quality control and pharmaceutical process of traditional Chinese medicine preparations.

Plant-derived coumarin (PDC) is a naturally occurring heterocyclic backbone that belongs to the benzopyrone family. PDC and its based products are characterized by low toxicity and high distribution in a variety of herbal treatments that have numerous therapeutic potentials. These include anticoagulants, antibacterials, anti-inflammatory agents, anticancer agents, antioxidants, and others. So, it may be appropriate to investigate the qualities and potential bioactivities of PDCs. This article provides an overview of the biomedical potentials, availability, and clinical use possibilities of PDCs, with a focus on their important modes of action, using information on various pharmacological qualities discovered. The data used in this study came from published research between 2015 and 2023. We reviewed a selection of databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, during that period. In conclusion, because of their abundance in medicinal plants, the clinical biochemistry attributes of PDCs are currently of interest. In a variety of medical specialties, PDCs serve a useful role as therapeutic agents.

Introduction: Hemorrhagic shock is characterized by derangements of the gastrointestinal microcirculation. Topical therapy with nitroglycerine or iloprost improves gastric tissue oxygenation but not regional perfusion, probably due to precapillary adrenergic innervation. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the local effect of the parasympathomimetic carbachol alone and in combination with either nitroglycerine or iloprost on gastric and oral microcirculation during hemorrhagic shock. Methods: In a cross-over design five female foxhounds were repeatedly randomized into six experimental groups. Carbachol, or carbachol in combination with either nitroglycerine or iloprost were applied topically to the oral and gastric mucosa. Saline, nitroglycerine, or iloprost application alone served as control groups. Then, a fixed-volume hemorrhage was induced by arterial blood withdrawal followed by blood retransfusion after 1h of shock. Gastric and oral microcirculation was determined using reflectance spectrophotometry and laser Doppler flowmetry. Oral microcirculation was visualized with videomicroscopy. Statistics: 2-way-ANOVA for repeated measurements and Bonferroni post-hoc analysis (mean ± SEM; p < 0.05). Results: The induction of hemorrhage led to a decrease of gastric and oral tissue oxygenation, that was ameliorated by local carbachol and nitroglycerine application at the gastric mucosa. The sole use of local iloprost did not improve gastric tissue oxygenation but could be supplemented by local carbachol treatment. Adding carbachol to nitroglycerine did not further increase gastric tissue oxygenation. Gastric microvascular blood flow remained unchanged in all experimental groups. Oral microvascular blood flow, microvascular flow index and total vessel density decreased during shock. Local carbachol supply improved oral vessel density during shock and oral microvascular flow index in the late course of hemorrhage. Conclusion: The specific effect of shifting the autonomous balance by local carbachol treatment on microcirculatory variables varies between parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Contrary to our expectations, the improvement of gastric tissue oxygenation by local carbachol or nitroglycerine application was not related to increased microvascular perfusion. When carbachol is used in combination with local vasodilators, the additional effect on gastric tissue oxygenation depends on the specific drug combination. Therefore, modulation of tissue oxygen consumption, mitochondrial function or alterations in regional blood flow distribution should be investigated.

BACKGROUND: Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and foam rolling are two techniques that have been proven effective in treating Myofascial Trigger Points, irrespective of the type of trigger point. However, little is known about the comparative effectiveness of Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and foam rolling. This study proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of either technique on plantar flexors trigger points, ankle dorsiflexion, and lower limb power present in the calf muscles in non-symptomatic patients. METHOD: Forty-two subjects with bilateral calf muscle tightness, at least one trigger point in the calf muscle, and fulfilling the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to either of the groups. Group A was treated for gastrocnemius and soleus trigger points using Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and Group B was treated using the Foam Rolling method. Treatment was given every alternate day, a total of 3 sessions. Subjects were evaluated on 1st and 3rd sessions for pre-post differences of ankle dorsiflexion Range of motion in weight bearing and non-weight bearing position, pressure pain threshold for gastrocnemius trigger point 1(G1), 2(G2), and soleus point 1(S1) on both sides, and lower limb power. RESULT: Within group analyses, both groups had shown statistically significant results for all parameters except gastrocnemius trigger point 2 of foam rolling. For between group comparison foam rolling had a statistically significant result in non-weight bearing ankle dorsiflexion range of motion. CONCLUSION: Both Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and Foam rolling were equally effective for treating calf trigger points. But foam rolling was more effective in improving ankle dorsiflexion range of motion.

The identification and classification of traditional Chinese herbal medicines demand significant time and expertise. We propose the dual-teacher supervised decay (DTSD) approach, an enhancement for Chinese herbal medicine recognition utilizing a refined knowledge distillation model. The DTSD method refines output soft labels, adapts attenuation parameters, and employs a dynamic combination loss in the teacher model. Implemented on the lightweight MobileNet_v3 network, the methodology is deployed successfully in a mobile application. Experimental results reveal that incorporating the exponential warmup learning rate reduction strategy during training optimizes the knowledge distillation model, achieving an average classification accuracy of 98.60% for 10 types of Chinese herbal medicine images. The model boasts an average detection time of 0.0172 s per image, with a compressed size of 10 MB. Comparative experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our refined model over DenseNet121, ResNet50_vd, Xception65, and EfficientNetB1. This refined model not only introduces an approach to Chinese herbal medicine image recognition but also provides a practical solution for lightweight models in mobile applications.

Tinospora sinensis (T. sinensis), whose Tibetan name is "Lezhe", as a traditional medicine, is widely distributed in China, India and Sri Lanka. It is used for the treatment of rheumatic arthralgia, sciatica, lumbar muscle strain and bruises. Research over the previous decades indicated that T. sinensis mainly contains terpenes, lignans, alkaloids, phenol glycosides and other chemical components. A wide range of pharmacologic activities such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunosuppressive, anti-aging, anti-radiation, anti-leishmania and liver protection have been reported. However, the scholar's research on the pharmacodynamic material basis of T. sinensis is relatively weak. Data regarding many aspects such as links between the traditional uses and bioactivities, pharmacokinetics, and quality control standard of active compositions is still limited and need more attention. This review reports a total of 241 compounds, the ethnopharmacology and clinical application of T. sinensis, covering the literature which were searched by multiple databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, CNKI and other literature sources from 1996 to date, with a view to provide a systematic and insightful reference and lays a foundation and inspiration for the application and further in-depth research of T. sinensis resources.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and hyperlipidemia can induce a variety of diseases, and have become major health problems worldwide. How to effectively prevent and control obesity has become one of the hot-spots of contemporary research. Mulberry leaf is the dried leaf of Morus alba L., which is approved by the Ministry of Health as a "homology of medicine and food", rich in diverse active constituents and with a variety of health effects including anti-obesity and anti-hyperlipidemia activities. PURPOSE: The review attempts to summarize and provide the molecular basis, mechanism, safety and products for further exploration and application of mulberry leaf on the treatment on the control of weight gain and obesity. METHODS: This review is conducted by using ScienceDirect, PubMed, CNKI and Web of Science databases following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). RESULTS: Based on the research progress of domestic and foreign scholars, the effective phytochemicals, molecular mechanisms and product applications of mulberry leaf in the prevention and treatment of obesity and related metabolic diseases were summarized. CONCLUSION: Mulberry leaf has excellent medicinal and health care value in obesity treatment. However, its pharmacodynamic substance basis and molecular mechanisms need to be further studied.

Objective: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical application of botanical (TAB) adjuvants in the treatment of melasma and provide evidence-based medical evidence for their clinical application. Methods: Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang Data, and SinoMed, databases were searched to identify all randomized controlled clinical trials on TAB adjuvant treatment for melasma from inception to May 2023. The primary outcomes included clinical efficacy, adverse effects, recurrence rate, and melanin index. Subgroup analyses were performed using the Melasma Area Severity Index (MASI) scores. Results: This study included 16 randomized trials with 1386 participants. Eligible trials demonstrated that topical phytomedicine adjuvant treatment for melasma increased clinical effectiveness (RR = 1.14, 95% CI (1.10, 1.19), P <0.00001), decreased recurrence rate (RR = 0.28, 95% CI (0.13, 0.59), P = 0.0009), and decreased melanin index (MI) (MD = -22.2,95% CI (-31.79, -12.61), P < 0.00001). In addition, subgroup analysis showed that topical phytomedicines reduced MASI scores (I2 = 0%, MDI = -0.95, 95% CI (-1.23,0.67), P < 0.00001), but when scored as the rate of decrease in MASI, topical phytomedicines had high MASI scores (I2 = 15%, MD = 0.3, 95% CI (0, 0.59), P = 0.05), indicating a slower rate of melasma mitigation when botanicals were applied topically. Although burning pain, redness and other mild adverse reactions may occur during the treatment period, they can be recovered on their own, and there is no statistical significance in the comparison of the two groups (RR = 0.95, 95% CI (0.42, 2.51), P = 0.91). Conclusion: TAB for melasma has a clear adjuvant clinical efficacy, a low recurrence rate, and does not cause serious adverse effects. An appropriate administration method may achieve better efficacy; however, this requires further verification.

Among the various natural compounds used in alternative and Oriental medicine, toxins isolated from different organisms have had their application for many years, and Apis mellifera venom has been studied the most extensively. Numerous studies dealing with the positive assets of bee venom (BV) indicated its beneficial properties. The usage of bee products to prevent the occurrence of diseases and for their treatment is often referred to as apitherapy and is based mainly on the experience of the traditional system of medical practice in diverse ethnic communities. Today, a large number of studies are focused on the antitumor effects of BV, which are mainly attributed to its basic polypeptide melittin (MEL). Previous studies have indicated that BV and its major constituent MEL cause a strong toxic effect on different cancer cells, such as liver, lung, bladder, kidney, prostate, breast, and leukemia cells, while a less pronounced effect was observed in normal non-target cells. Their proposed mechanisms of action, such as the effect on proliferation and growth inhibition, cell cycle alterations, and induction of cell death through several cancer cell death mechanisms, are associated with the activation of phospholipase A2 (PLA2), caspases, and matrix metalloproteinases that destroy cancer cells. Numerous cellular effects of BV and MEL need to be elucidated on the molecular level, while the key issue has to do with the trigger of the apoptotic cascade. Apoptosis could be either a consequence of the plasmatic membrane fenestration or the result of the direct interaction of the BV components with pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic factors. The interaction of BV peptides and enzymes with the plasma membrane is a crucial step in the whole process. However, before its possible application as a remedy, it is crucial to identify the correct route of exposure and dosage of BV and MEL for potential therapeutic use as well as potential side effects on normal cells and tissues to avoid any possible adverse event.

Phyllanthus emblica Linn is not only an edible fruit with high nutritional value, but also a medicinal plant with multiple bioactivities. It is widely used in clinical practice with functions of clearing heat, cooling blood, digesting food, strengthening stomach, promoting fluid production, and relieving cough. This review summarized a wide variety of phytonutrients, including nutritional components (mineral elements, amino acids, vitamins, polysaccharides, unsaturated free fatty acids) and functional components (phenolic acids (1-34), tannins (35-98), flavonoids (99-141), sterols (142-159), triterpenoids (160-175), lignans (176-183), alkaloids (184-197), alkanes (198-212), aromatic micromolecules (213-222), other compounds (223-239)). The isolated compounds and the various extracts of P. emblica Linn presented a diverse spectrum of biological activities such as anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, anti-atherosclerosis, neuroprotective, enhancing immunity, anti-fatigue, anti-myocardial fibrosis. The quality markers of P. emblica Linn were predicted and analyzed based on traditional medicinal properties, traditional efficacy, plant genealogy and chemical component characteristics, biogenic pathway of chemical components, measurability of chemical components, transformation characteristics of polyphenolic components, homologous characteristics of medicine and food, compound compatibility environment, and clinical applications. This review also summarized and prospected applications of P. emblica Linn in beverages, preserved fruits, fermented foods, etc. However, the contents of mechanism, structure-activity relationship, quality control, toxicity, extraction, processing of P. emblica Linn are not clear, and are worth further studies in the future.

Background: Perceived stress in the United States has drastically increased since the COVID-19 pandemic and is associated with negative mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety. Digital mental health (DMH) interventions are efficacious tools to address negative mental health outcomes and have helped reduce the severity of psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and perceived stress, compared to waitlist controls. Although DMH tools have been studied in controlled settings, less is known about the real-world evidence of such interventions. Objective: This study aimed to (1) characterize patterns in baseline perceived stress and changes in perceived stress among Headspace members with moderate and severe baseline perceived stress and (2) examine associations between engagement with Headspace content and changes in perceived stress (ie, evaluate whether there is a dose-response relationship). Methods: We evaluated real-world perceived stress and engagement data at 2 time points among Headspace app members with baseline moderate and severe perceived stress. Perceived stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and engagement using active days and active minutes engaged with Headspace as well as the number of user sessions. Descriptive statistics were computed for all variables. Correlations between baseline and follow-up scores, percent change in PSS-10 scores, days between PSS-10 use, active days, active days per week, active minutes, active minutes per day, sessions, and sessions per week were evaluated. We used t tests to investigate differences in the abovementioned parameters between (1) participants who did and those who did not see improvements in PSS-10 scores (yes vs no improvement) and (2) participants who saw ≥30% improvement versus those who saw a <30% improvement in PSS-10 scores. Results: Overall, 21,088 Headspace members were included in these analyses. On average, members saw a 23.52% decrease in PSS-10 scores from baseline to follow-up. On average, members had 2.42 (SD 1.76) active days per week and 25.89 (SD 33.40) active minutes per day, and completed 7.11 (SD 8.34) sessions per week. t tests suggest that members who saw improvements in PSS-10 scores from baseline to follow-up had significantly higher baseline PSS-10 scores (Cohen d=0.56), more active days per week (Cohen d=0.33), and more sessions per week (Cohen d=0.27) than those who did not see improvements in PSS-10 scores (all P<.001). Additional t tests suggest that members with ≥30% improvement in PSS-10 scores had significantly higher baseline PSS-10 scores (Cohen d=0.35), more active days per week (Cohen d=0.36), and more sessions per week (Cohen d=0.31) than those with a >30% improvement (all P<.001). Conclusions: Real-world use of Headspace is associated with decreased perceived stress. Furthermore, data suggest that more engagement, specifically weekly active days and sessions, is associated with a greater likelihood of stress reduction.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate a digital health intervention using Auricular Point Acupressure (APA) for chronic musculoskeletal pain in terms of participant retention, adherence, acceptability, and satisfaction. Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a global concern and there are persistent challenges in pain management. Despite the value of digital health interventions, these interventions need to be fully evaluated for feasibility. METHODS: We conducted a 3-group, longitudinal, randomized controlled trial (RCT). After Institutional Review Board approval, we posted recruitment flyers in a university, healthcare clinics, and community settings. Participants were randomized into an in-person + app group (n = 8), virtual + app group (n = 7), and a wait-list, education-enhanced control group (n = 8), evaluating our outcomes using standard feasibility measures. The 4-week intervention consisted of virtual sessions, telecommunications, and our APA app, followed by a 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: Data from 22 participants were subsequently analyzed (95.7%). All app participants adhered to the study protocol and used APA at the minimum recommended frequency and duration. The virtual + app group used APA more during the intervention and follow-up periods. All app participants found the intervention to be acceptable and at least 80% overall were satisfied with APA at the 3-month follow-up. There were no adverse events reported. CONCLUSIONS: Our digital health intervention was found to be acceptable and sustainable; participants adhered to and were satisfied with the intervention providing support for a larger RCT. Traditional cosmetics play a significant role in the cultural practices and personal hygiene of many ethnic groups worldwide. The Oromo, an indigenous community in Ethiopia, has a rich history of utilizing local plants for cosmetic purposes. However, the use of plants as traditional cosmetics has only been poorly investigated as more emphasis was given to traditional medicines. The study thus aimed to identify and document plant species, and parts used in traditional cosmetics and associated knowledge, and practices among Oromo women in the Madda Walabu district, Southeastern Ethiopia. A total of 150 Oromo women were interviewed to gather ethnobotanical information including the plant species used for cosmetics, their preparation methods, and their applications. Ethnobotanical indices were computed to determine the most important species used by the women. A total of 48 plant species belonging to 31 families used as sources of traditional cosmetics were recorded. Most of these plants were trees. Leaves were the most commonly used plant part in traditional cosmetics, and maceration and decoction were the most common preparation methods applied to prepare traditional cosmetics. Topical application of traditional cosmetics was the most common, while oral infusions were rarely reported type of administration. All categories had high informant consensus factor (ICF) values, ranging from 0.80 to 0.98. The highest ICF value was found for skin treatment, followed by the hair, and face mask. Overall, Commiphora habessinica, Gnidia stenophylla, Kalanchoe lanceolata, Mimusops kummel, Sesamothamnus rivae, Terminalia brownii, T. laxiflora, Acacia drepanolobium, A. mellifera, and Aloe citrina were the most frequently cited and culturally important plants by Oromo women for traditional cosmetics in the area. The study highlights the importance of local plant resources for maintaining cultural practices and personal hygiene. However, the cultural heritage associated with traditional cosmetics is facing threats from various factors. Therefore, a continuous effort to document and disseminate knowledge about traditional cosmetics practices to ensure their preservation and transmission and awakening younger generations about the importance of traditional cosmetics and their role in cultural heritage is crucial.

Among the common natural biomolecules, the excellent properties of proteins have attracted extensive attention from researchers for functional applications, however, in native form proteins have many limitations in the performance of their functional attribute. However, with the deepening of research, it has been found that the combination of natural active substances such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, etc. with protein molecules will make the composite system have stronger functional properties, while the utilization of pH-driven method, ultrasonic treatment, heat treatment, etc. not only provides a guarantee for the overall protein-based composite system, but also gives more possibilities to the protein-composite system. Protein composite systems are emerging in the fields of novel active packaging, functional factor delivery systems and gel systems with high medical value. The products of these protein composite systems usually have high functional properties, mainly due to the interaction of the remaining natural active substances with protein molecules, which can be broadly categorized into covalent interactions and non-covalent interactions, and which, despite the differences in these interactions, together constitute the cornerstone for the stability of protein composite systems and for in-depth research.
