Starting from the consideration of the structure of human milk fat globule (MFG), this study aimed to investigate the effects of ultrasonic treatment on milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) and soy lecithin (SL) complexes and their role in mimicking human MFG emulsions. Ultrasonic power significantly affected the structure of the MFGM-SL complex, further promoting the unfolding of the molecular structure of the protein, and then increased solubility and surface hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the microstructure of mimicking MFG emulsions without sonication was unevenly distributed, and the average droplet diameter was large. After ultrasonic treatment, the droplets of the emulsion were more uniformly dispersed, the particle size was smaller, and the emulsification properties and stability were improved to varying degrees. Especially when the ultrasonic power was 300 W, the mimicking MFG emulsion had the highest encapsulation rate and emulsion activity index and emulsion stability index were increased by 60.88 % and 117.74 %, respectively. From the microstructure, it was observed that the spherical droplets of the mimicking MFG emulsion after appropriate ultrasonic treatment remain well separated without obvious flocculation. This study can provide a reference for the screening of milk fat globules mimicking membrane materials and the further utilization and development of ultrasound in infant formula.

Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) is present in various foods and contains a choline moiety such as in glycerophosphocholine (GPC). However, the potential of LPC as a choline source remains unclear. This study investigated the single-dose pharmacokinetics of 480 mg soy-derived LPC in 12 healthy men compared with that of either soy oil with the same lipid amount (placebo) or GPC with the same choline amount. Both LPC and GPC supplementation increased plasma choline, serum phospholipid, and serum triglyceride concentrations, but neither of them significantly elevated plasma trimethylamine N-oxide concentration. In addition, although the intake of LPC slightly increased plasma LPC16:0, LPC18:2, and total LPC concentrations, their concentrations remained within physiological ranges. No adverse events were attributed to the LPC supplementation. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to compare LPC and GPC pharmacokinetics in humans and shows that LPC can be a source of choline.

In this work, soybean lecithin (LC) was used to modify ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) with hydrophobic fat chains to become amphiphilic (LC-CD), and vitamin E (VE) was encapsulated in former modified ß-CD complexes (LC-CD-VE), the new Pickering emulsions stabilized by LC-CD-VE and LC-CD complexes for the delivery of ß-carotene (BC) were created. The surface tension, contact angle, zeta potential, and particle size were used to assess the changes in complexes nanoparticles at various pH values. Furthermore, LC-CD-VE has more promise as Pickering emulsion stabilizer than LC-CD because of the smaller particle size (271.11 nm), proper contact angle (58.02°), and lower surface tension (42.49 mN/m). The interactions between ß-cyclodextrin, soybean lecithin, and vitamin E were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The durability of Pickering emulsions was examined at various volume fractions of the oil phase and concentrations of nanoparticles. Compared to the emulsion stabilized by LC-CD, the one stabilized by LC-CD-VE showed superior storage stability. Moreover, for the delivery of BC, Pickering emulsions stabilized by LC-CD and LC-CD-VE can outperform bulk oil and Tween 80 stabilized emulsions in terms of UV light stability, storage stability, and bioaccessibility. This work could offer fresh perspectives on stabilizer alternatives for Pickering emulsion delivery systems.

Herein, lipid-polymer core-shell hybrid nanoparticles composed of poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/lecithin (PLNs) were synthesized through lipid-based surface engineering. Lipids were absorbed onto the surface of the PLGA core to enhance the advantages of polymeric nanoparticles and liposomes. The amounts of lipids and encapsulation of the drug nicardipine hydrochloride (NCH) in the PLNs were studied. NCH-loaded PLNs (NCH-PLNs) were produced in high yield (66%) with a high encapsulation efficiency (92%) and a size of 176 nm. The mass of phosphorus (P) on the NCH-PLN surface was qualitatively and quantitatively investigated using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and lecithin addition increased the P mass percentage due to the phosphate group (PO43-) in its structure. These data confirmed the lipid-based surface engineering of NCH-PLNs. The zeta potential of NCH-PLN exceeded -30 mV, ensuring colloidal stability, and preventing precipitation through electrostatic stabilization. In vitro, NCH was continuously and slowly released from NCH-PLNs over 16 days. Furthermore, PSVK1 cells exhibited high viability after treatment with NCH-PLNs, indicating favorable cytocompatibility. After comparing various mathematical equations of drug release kinetics, the data best fit the Korsmeyer-Peppas model with R2 values of 0.989, 0.990, and 0.982 for 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 mg/mL lecithin, respectively. The release exponents obtained ranged from 0.480 to 0.505, suggesting anomalous transport release. Thus, NCH-PLNs have potential as a robust drug delivery platform for the controlled administration of NCH, particularly for vasodilation during neurosurgery.

Background: The prevalence of inflammatory bowel diseases is increasing, especially in developing countries, with adoption of Western-style diet. This study aimed to investigate the effects of two emulsifiers including lecithin and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on the gut microbiota, intestinal inflammation and the potential of inulin as a means to protect against the harmful effects of emulsifiers. Methods: In this study, male C57Bl/6 mice were divided into five groups (n:6/group) (control, CMC, lecithin, CMC+inulin, and lecithin+inulin). Lecithin and CMC were diluted in drinking water (1% w/v) and inulin was administered daily at 5 g/kg for 12 weeks. Histological examination of the ileum and colon, serum IL-10, IL-6, and fecal lipocalin-2 levels were analyzed. 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 region amplicon sequencing was performed on stool samples. Results: In the CMC and lecithin groups, shortening of the villus and a decrease in goblet cells were observed in the ileum and colon, whereas inulin reversed this effect. The lipocalin level, which was 9.7 ± 3.29 ng in the CMC group, decreased to 4.1 ± 2.98 ng with the administration of inulin. Bifidobacteria and Akkermansia were lower in the CMC group than the control, while they were higher in the CMC+inulin group. In conclusion, emulsifiers affect intestinal health negatively by disrupting the epithelial integrity and altering the composition of the microbiota. Inulin is protective on their harmful effects. In addition, it was found that CMC was more detrimental to microbiota composition than lecithin.

Traditional Beijing roast duck often suffers from uneven color and high sugar content after roasting. Water-in-oil (W/O) nanoemulsion is a promising alternative to replace high concentration of sugar solution used in sugaring process according to similarity-intermiscibility theory. Herein, 3% of xylose was embedded in the aqueous phase of W/O emulsion to replace 15% maltose solution. W/O emulsions with different ratios of lecithin (LEC) and polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) were constructed by high-speed homogenization and high-pressure homogenization. Distribution and penetration extent of solutions and emulsions through the duck skin, as well as the color uniformity of Beijing roast duck were analyzed. Emulsions with LEC:PGPR ratios of 1:3 and 2:2 had better stability. Stable interfacial film and spatial structure were important factors influencing emulsion stabilization. The stable W/O emulsions could more uniformly distribute onto the surface of duck skin and longitudinally penetrate through the skin than solutions.

The successful preservation of ram semen is essential to promote genetic variability, ensure semen transportation, and inseminate multiple ewes. Currently, either animal or plant-based lipoprotein-based extenders are used for semen preservation. Animal product-based extenders include milk and egg yolk, while soybean lecithin is a plant-based extender. Although extenders containing products of animal origin better preserve the quality of chilled semen, the in vivo efficacy after 24 h of storage is still of great concern. Storage temperature is another important and effective factor in preserving sperm quality, whereby different storage temperatures are adopted to enhance the storage life of sperm. Low temperatures (4-5 °C) better preserve sperm quality for a longer duration than high temperatures (15, 20, and 25 °C). Moreover, antioxidant supplementation has a positive impact on sperm quality during liquid storage. The current review summarizes the outcomes of various extenders, different storage temperatures, and antioxidant supplementation on the liquid storage of ram sperm.

Due to tenoxicam (TX)'s poor aqueous solubility (0.072 mg/ml), it is poorly absorbable in the GIT, and the long-term oral administration of TX may cause severe GIT disturbances. Topical administration of TX can help in bypassing the GIT adverse effects. Therefore, in the present work, we constructed different pluronic/lecithin organogels (PLOs) for topical delivery of TX. PLO was constructed simply via direct mixing of an aqueous pluronic solution with lecithin solution. The prepared PLO formulations were characterized for their physicochemical properties including pH, drug content, visual inspection, viscosity, and spreadability. Also, the in vitro release and kinetic studies were carried out to investigate the mechanism of drug release. Moreover, the in vivo studies were carried out by investigating the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities using albino male rats. The results showed that the modified PLOs have good physicochemical properties. The viscosity of the modified gels is a direct proportionality with both lecithin and pluronic concentrations. Also, subsequently, the drug release rate is directly proportional to gel viscosity. Moreover, the in vivo studies showed that the modified PLOs (F19) showed a significant ( < 0.05%) paw edema inhibition and pain analgesia compared with other investigated groups. Also, the results indicated that the increase in dose is accompanied by higher activity and a longer duration of action which extended to 12 h. Hence, the modified PLOs are promising safe candidates or vehicles for effective TX loading with sustained delivery behavior.

I have been studying the improvement of drug solubility using solid dispersion and skin-applied formulations. When preparing solid dispersions using phosphatidylcoline (PC) as a carrier, drug with hydrogen-donating groups interacts with PC to produce amorphous solid dispersions with high drug content; this overcomes improves drug absorption. The drug was solubilized and supersaturated in the oil-based gel formed with hyadrogenated lecithin; this facilitates drug permeation through the skin. The promoting effect differs with the nature of the oil used because of the skin penetration of the oil itself and the accompanying increase in drug solubility and diffusion coefficient in the skin. At actual application volumes of 10 µL/cm2 or less, the skin penetration of poorly-absorbable drugs depends on the molecular weight and surface tension of the oil. The penetration of the oil vehicle into the upper stratum corneum influences the reach of the drug into the stratum corneum; a high drug concentration near the 7th layer of the stratum corneum promotes migration through the skin by increasing the linear concentration gradient in deeper layers. In addition, we performed a risk assessment, in collaboration with toxicologists, for dermal safety that included the toxicity potential of substances and the parts related to skin transfer.

Curcumin (Cur) possesses remarkable pharmacological properties, including cardioprotective, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities. However, the utilization of Cur in pharmaceuticals faces constraints owing to its inadequate water solubility and limited bioavailability. To overcome these hurdles, there has been notable focus on exploring innovative formulations, with nanobiotechnology emerging as a promising avenue to enhance the therapeutic effectiveness of these complex compounds. We report a novel safe, effective method for improving the incorporation of anticancer curcumin to induce apoptosis by reducing the expression levels of miR20a and miR21. The established method features three aspects that, to our knowledge, have not been formally verified: (1) use of a novel formula to incorporate curcumin, (2) use of all biocompatible biodegradable materials to produce this formula without leaving harmful residues, and (3) an incorporation process at temperatures of approximately 50 °C. The formula was prepared from lecithin (LE), and chitosan (CH) with an eco-friendly emulsifying agent and olive oil as the curcumin solvent. The formula was converted to nanoscale through ultrasonication and probe sonication at a frequency of 20 kHz. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the nano formula was spherical in shape with sizes ranging between 49.7 nm in diameter and negative zeta potentials ranging from 28 to 34 mV. Primers miR20a and miR21 were designed for molecular studies. Nearly complete curcumin with an encapsulation efficiency of 91.1% was established using a straight-line equation. The nano formula incorporated with curcumin was used to prepare formulations that exhibited anticancer activities. The apoptosis pathway in cancer cells was activated by the minimum inhibitory concentration of the nano formula. These findings suggest the potential of this nanoformulation as an effective and selective cancer treatment that does not affect the normal cells.

Developing artificial substitutes that mimic the structures and performances of natural cartilage is of great importance. However, it is challenging to integrate the high strength, excellent biocompatibility, low coefficient of friction, long-term wear resistance, outstanding swelling resistance, and osseointegration potential into one material. Herein, a sandwich hydrogel with cartilage-mimetic structures and performances was prepared to achieve this goal. The precursor hydrogel was obtained by freezing-thawing the mixture of poly vinyl alcohol, chitosan and deionized water three cycles, accompanied by soaking in sodium hyaluronate solution. The top of the precursor hydrogel was hydrophobically modified with lauroyl chloride and then loaded with lecithin, while the bottom was mineralized with hydroxyapatite. Due to the multiple linkages (crystalline domains, hydrogen bonds, and ionic interactions), the compressive stress was 71 MPa. Owing to the synergy of the hydrophobic modification and lecithin, the coefficient of friction was 0.01. Additionally, no wear trace was observed after 50,000 wear cycles. Remarkably, hydroxyapatite enabled the hydrogel osseointegration potential. The swelling ratio of the hydrogel was 0.06 g/g after soaking in simulated synovial fluid for 7 days. Since raw materials were non-toxic, the cell viability was 100 %. All of the above merits make it an ideal material for cartilage replacement.

Aquaponics is a method of producing food in a sustainable manner through the integration of aquaculture and hydroponics, which allows simultaneous cultivation of fish and economic crops. The use of natural fungicides are crucial to the sustainable control of diseases in aquaponics. We assessed the potential impacts of natural fungicides, such as clove oil and lecithin, as well as a synthetic fungicide, tebuconazole, following foliar application in aquaponics. This study examined the runoff rates of the fungicides in decoupled aquaponics, and the subsequent effects of the runoffs on nitrification processes and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The runoffs of the foliar-applied fungicides, clove oil, lecithin, and tebuconazole, were detected in aquaponics water at a percentage runoff rate of 0.3 %, 2.3 %, and 0.3-0.8 % respectively. In the biofilter, lecithin altered the ammonium levels by increasing ammonium-nitrogen levels by 7 mg L-1, 6 h post application. Clove oil, on the other hand, showed no significant effect on ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate-nitrogen. Similarly, the toxicity test showed that eugenol had no significant effects on the hematological, biochemical and antioxidative activities of O. niloticus. Conversely, tebuconazole exhibited significant and persistent effects on various biochemical parameters, including lactate, albumin, and total protein, as well as hematological parameters like hemoglobin and MCH. The use of lecithin and tebuconazole should only be limited to decoupled aquaponics.

We investigated the effect of the rheological properties and composition of lecithin reverse wormlike micelles (LRWs) on the skin permeation of a model of a hydrophilic drug to determine whether LRWs support uniform hydrophilic drug/oil-based formulations and good drug penetrate into skin. Here, we prepared LRWs with D (-)-ribose (RI) or glycerol (GL) as polar compounds, liquid paraffin (LP) or isopropyl myristate (IPM) as oils, and 6-carboxyfluorescein (CF) as a model for a hydrophilic drug, and evaluated the rheological properties and skin penetration characteristics of the preparations. The LRWs showed moderate viscosity at 25 °C, a typical storage temperature, but decreasing viscosity at 32 °C, the surface temperature of human skin, suggesting that the LRWs would penetrate the microstructure of skin (e.g., wrinkles and hair follicles). The highest skin permeability of CF was observed when IPM was used as the oil, suggesting that both the stratum corneum and hair follicle routes are involved in drug permeation. The penetration of CF into hair follicles is influenced not only by the rheology of the formulation but also by the interaction between IPM and sebum in the hair follicles.

Nanoencapsulation, employing safe materials, holds substantial promise for enhancing bioactive compounds' delivery, stability, and bioactivity. In this study, we present an innovative and safe methodology for augmenting the incorporation of the anticancer agent, curcumin, thereby inducing apoptosis by downregulating miR20a and miR21 expression. Our established methodology introduces three pivotal elements that, to our knowledge, have not undergone formal validation: (1) Novel formulation: We introduce a unique formula for curcumin incorporation. (2) Biocompatibility and biodegradability: our formulation exclusively consists of biocompatible and biodegradable constituents, ensuring the absence of detrimental residues or undesirable reactions under varying conditions. (3) Low-temperature incorporation: Curcumin is incorporated into the formulation at temperatures approximating 50 °C. The formulation comprises lecithin (LE), chitosan (CH), an eco-friendly emulsifying agent, and olive oil as the solvent for curcumin. Nanoscale conversion is achieved through ultrasonication and probe sonication (20 kHz). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals spherical nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 29.33 nm and negative zeta potentials within the -28 to -34 mV range. Molecular studies involve the design of primers for miR20a and miR21. Our findings showcase a remarkable encapsulation efficiency of 91.1% for curcumin, as determined through a linear equation. The curcumin-loaded nanoformulation demonstrates potent anticancer activity, effectively activating the apoptosis pathway in cancer cells at the minimum inhibitory concentration. These results underscore the potential of our nanoformulation as a compelling, cancer-selective treatment strategy, preserving the integrity of normal cells, and thus, warranting further exploration in the field of cancer therapy.

Our main aim to design and develop a novel 4-carboxy phenyl boronic acid (4-CPBA) conjugated Palbociclib (PALB) loaded pH-sensitive chitosan lipid nanoparticles (PPCL) to enhance the anti-cancer efficacy of the PALB in in-vitro cell line studies by loading into 4-CPBA conjugated chitosan lipid nanoparticles. 4-CPBA was conjugated to chitosan by carbodiimide chemistry and formation of conjugate was confirmed by 1HNMR, ATR-FTIR spectroscopic techniques. Ionic-gelation method was used for the fabrication of PPCL and particles size, PDI, zeta potential were found to be 226.5 ± 4.3 nm, 0.271 ± 0.014 and 5.03 ± 0.42 mV. Presence of pH-sensitive biological macromolecule i.e. chitosan in the carrier system provides pH-sensitivity to PPCL and sustainedly released the drug upto 144 h. The PPCL exhibited approximately 7.2, 6.6, and 5-fold reduction in IC50 values than PALB in MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and 4T1 cells. Receptor blocking assay concluded that the fabricated nanoparticles were internalized into MCF-7 cells might be through sialic acid-mediated endocytosis. PPCL caused extensive mitochondrial depolarization, enhanced ROS generation, apoptosis (DAPI nuclear staining, acridine orange/ ethidium bromide dual staining), and reduced % cell migration than pure PALB. It was concluded that the hybrid lipid-polymer nanoparticles provides an optimistic approach for the treatment of breast cancer.

Introducción: La contaminación resultante de la industrialización ha propiciado el aumento de la concentración de metales en diversos ambientes y su incorporación a materias primas y productos terminados, lo que repercute directamente en la salud humana. Objetivo: Cuantificar metales en la materia prima empleada en la fabricación de la tableta masticable LECISAN® y en la tableta, para establecer niveles de referencia de: aluminio, calcio, cadmio, cromo, cobre, hierro, magnesio, plomo, silicio, vanadio y zinc. Método: Se utilizó la espectrometría atómica de emisión óptica con plasma inductivamente acoplado (ICP OES) y se establecieron mediante métodos estadísticos los intervalos de confianza para la media de los valorescuantificados con una probabilidad del 95%. Resultados: Existen diferencias significativas entre las dos formas de presentación en cuanto a la cantidad de todos los metales, excepto aluminio (p<0,05). Los coeficientes de variación fueron bajos, el cromo obtuvo un valor cercano al 10% en la materia prima y el plomo resultó elevado (17,44 %). Los valores se encuentran dentro del rango reportado como permisibles según norma cubana (NC 493:2012) excepto para plomo y cobre. Se observaron mayores concentraciones de aquellos elementos con efectos favorables para la salud. Conclusiones: Los resultados encontrados deben ser considerados como referenciales para la evaluación del impacto que sobre la salud tendría el régimen de administración diaria del suplemento nutricionalLECISAN® yel análisis de factores relacionados con la presencia de metales en subproductos del refinado del aceite de soya para futura investigaciones.


Introduction: The pollution resulting from industrialization has led to an increase in the concentration of metals in various environments and their incorporation into raw materials and finished products, which has a direct impact on human health. Objective: To quantify metals in the raw material used in the manufacture of the LECISAN® chewable tablet and in the tablet, to establish reference levels of: aluminum, calcium, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, lead, silicon, vanadium and zinc. Method: Atomic optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP OES) was used and confidence intervals for the mean of the quantified values were established using statistical methods with a probability of 95%. Results: There are significant differences between the two presentation forms in terms of the amount of all metals, except aluminum (p<0.05). The variation coefficients were low, chromium obtained a value close to 10% in the raw material and lead was high (17.44%). The values are within the range reported as permissible according to Cuban standards (NC 493:2012) except for lead and copper. Higher concentrations of those elements with favorable health effects were observed. Conclusions: The results found should be considered as references for the evaluation of the impact that the daily administration regimen of the LECISAN® nutritional supplement would have on health and the analysis of factors related to the presence of metals in by-products of soybean oil refining for future research.

Objetivo: Quantificar metais na matéria-prima utilizada na fabricação do comprimido mastigável LECISAN® e no comprimido, estabelecer teores de referência de: alumínio, cálcio, cádmio, cromo, cobre, ferro, magnésio, chumbo, silício, vanádio e zinco. Método: Foi utilizada espectrometria de emissão óptica atômica com plasma indutivamente acoplado (ICP OES) e os intervalos de confiança para a média dos valores quantificados foram estabelecidos por meio de métodos estatísticos com probabilidade de 95%. Resultados: Existem diferenças significativas entre as duas formas de apresentação quanto à quantidade de todos os metais, exceto alumínio (p<0,05). Os coeficientes de variação foram baixos, o cromo obteve valor próximo a 10% na matéria-prima e o chumbo foi alto (17,44%). Os valores estão dentro da faixa informada como permitida segundo as normas cubanas (NC 493:2012) exceto para chumbo e cobre. Foram observadas concentrações mais elevadas desses elementos com efeitos favoráveis à saúde. Conclusões: Os resultados encontrados devem ser considerados referências para a avaliação do impacto que o regime diário de administração do suplemento nutricional LECISAN® teria na saúde e a análise dos fatores relacionados à presença de metais em subprodutos do refino do óleo de soja para pesquisas futuras.

This study aimed at investigating the effect of hydrolyzed soya lecithin; also called lysolecithin or lysophosphatidylcholine, on growth performance, caecal microbiota and fat depots in pre-breeding primiparous rabbits does. For this, 60 V-Line primiparous rabbits does (5-6 months) were used in a 30-day experiment. Does were allotted into three iso-nitrogenous iso-caloric dietary treatments (n = 20/group) as follows: (1) CON received 0% soya lecithin, (2) LECL group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.5% soya lecithin and (3) LECH group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 1% soya lecithin. Growth performance indices were measured, caecum samples were collected for measurement of specific bacteria via qPCR, and several fat depots including periovarian fat were sampled for adipocyte morphometry and fatty acid profiling. Statistical analysis was performed using GLM procedures of SAS v9.4. Soya lecithin increased feed intake (p < 0.05). The abundance of caecal Bifidobacteria species, Ruminococcus species and phylum Butryvibrio-specific genes increased (p < 0.05) in rabbits receiving soya lecithin in their diet, soya lecithin increased the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in subcutaneous and perirenal fat (p < 0.05) and increased the level of monounsaturated fatty acids in periovarian fat (p < 0.05); additionally, the adipocyte area increased in periovarian and perirenal fat (p < 0.05). In conclusion, soya lecithin at a dose of 0.5% increased feed intake and energy storage in adipocytes and improved the fatty acid profile of periovarian fat.

Soybean lecithin is extensively used as the dietary supplementation of phospholipids in animal production. Soybean lecithin plays significant roles in aquafeed as growth promoter, feed enhancer, immunity modulator and antioxidant activity stimulator for aquaculture species. Besides, soybean lecithin is also reported to help aquaculture species being resilient to physical and chemical stressors. In this review, common sources, chemical structure and mode of action of lecithin, with highlight on soybean lecithin application in aquaculture over four-decadal studies published between 1983 and 2023, were evaluated and summarized. By far, soybean lecithin is best-known for its beneficial effects, availability yet cost-effective for aquafeed formulation. Findings from this review also demonstrate that although nutritional profile of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and phosphatidylcholine from egg yolk and marine sources are superior to those from plant sources such as soybean, it is rather costly for sustainable application in aquafeed formulation. Moreover, commercially available products that incorporate soybean lecithin with other feed additives are promising to boost aquaculture production. Overall, effects of soybean lecithin supplementation are well-recognized on larval and juvenile of aquaculture species which having limited ability to biosynthesis phospholipids de novo, and correspondingly attribute to phospholipid, a primary component of soybean lecithin, that is essential for rapid growth during early stages development. In addition, soybean lecithin supplementation plays a distinguish role in stimulating maturation of gonadal development in the adults, especially for crustaceans.

To explore the potential benefits of dietary phospholipids (PLs) in fish glucose metabolism and to promote feed culture of Chinese perch (Siniperca chuatsi), we set up six diets to feed Chinese perch (initial mean body weight 37.01 ± 0.20 g) for 86 days, including: Control diet (CT), 1% (SL1), 2% (SL2), 3% (SL3), 4% (SL4) soybean lecithin (SL) and 2% (KO2) krill oil (KO) supplemental diets (in triplicate, 20 fish each). Our study found that the SL2 significantly improved the weight gain rate and special growth rate, but the KO2 did not. In addition, the SL2 diet significantly improved feed intake, which is consistent with the mRNA levels of appetite-related genes (npy, agrp, leptin A). Additionally, in the CT and SL-added groups, leptin A expression levels were nearly synchronized with serum glucose levels. Besides, the SL2 significantly upregulated expression levels of glut2, gk, cs, fas and downregulated g6pase in the liver, suggesting that it may enhance glucose uptake, aerobic oxidation, and conversion to fatty acids. The SL2 also maintained the hepatic crude lipid content unchanged compared to the CT, possibly by significantly down-regulating the mRNA level of hepatic lipase gene (hl), and by elevating serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) level and intraperitoneal fat ratio in significance. Moreover, the serum high-density lipoprotein levels were significantly increased by PL supplementation, and the SL2 further significantly increased serum total cholesterol and LDL levels, suggesting that dietary PLs promote lipid absorption and transport. Furthermore, dietary SL at 1% level could enhance non-specific immune capacity, with serum total protein level being markedly higher than that in the CT group. In conclusion, it is speculated that the promotion of glucose utilization and appetite by 2% dietary SL could be linked. We suggest a 1.91% supplementation of SL in the diet for the best growth performance in juvenile Chinese perch.

The supplementation of cryopreservation media with antioxidants improves the post-thaw quality and fertilizing ability of spermatozoa. To maximize the fertility of frozen-thawed buck spermatozoa, further research is required to overcome obstacles that have yielded controversial results and standardize protocols. In the present work, the effect of adding fumaric acid (a well-described antioxidant) to a soy lecithin semen extender on certain quality parameters of spermatozoa following freezing and thawing was examined for the first time. Five sexually mature Skopelos bucks were used, and ejaculates were collected with an artificial vagina. The semen samples (98 samples, five replicates) were diluted (400 × 106 spermatozoa/mL) with OviXcell®, supplemented with fumaric acid (0 mM, 2.15 mM, 10 mM or 30 mM), equilibrated (5 °C; 3 h), packed (0.5 mL straws), frozen and stored (-196 °C) until further processing. After thawing, the spermatozoa total and progressive motility (CASA), viability (eosin-nigrosin), membrane functional integrity (HOST), acrosome integrity (SpermBlue®) and mitochondrial function (Rhodamine-123/SYBR-14/PI) were evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed with one-way ANOVA, followed by Duncan's test; significance was set at 0.05. The addition of 2.15 mM fumaric acid improved (p < 0.05) spermatozoa viability, membrane functional integrity, acrosome integrity and mitochondrial function compared to all other concentrations. The addition of 30 mM fumaric acid decreased (p < 0.05) spermatozoa viability and mitochondrial function compared to all other concentrations. These results indicate a beneficial effect of a 2.15 mM fumaric acid addition to a soy lecithin extender on post-thaw buck spermatozoa quality. Further research is required to evaluate the in vivo fertility of frozen-thawed buck spermatozoa treated with fumaric acid, as well as to elucidate the mechanism of action of fumaric acid in spermatozoa.
