An organism's ability to function properly depends not solely on its diet but also on the intake of nutrients and non-nutritive bioactive compounds that exert immunomodulatory effects. This principle applies both to healthy individuals and, in particular, to those with concomitant chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. However, the current food industry and the widespread use of highly processed foods often lead to nutritional deficiencies. Numerous studies have confirmed the occurrence of immune system dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. This article elucidates the impact of specific nutrients on the immune system function, which maintains homeostasis of the organism, with a particular emphasis on type 2 diabetes. The role of macronutrients, micronutrients, vitamins, and selected substances, such as omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, and alpha-lipoic acid, was taken into consideration, which outlined the minimum range of tests that ought to be performed on patients in order to either directly or indirectly determine the severity of malnutrition in this group of patients.

BACKGROUND: Although considerable concern has been expressed about the nutritional implications of infant food pouches, how they impact infant diet has not been examined. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the contribution of infant food pouches specifically, and commercial infant foods generally, to nutrient intake from complementary foods in infants. METHODS: Two multiple-pass 24-h diet recall data were collected from 645 infants (6.0-11.9 mo) in the First Foods and Young Foods New Zealand studies. Detailed information was obtained on commercial infant food use, including pouches, and nutrient composition was calculated through recipe modeling. RESULTS: The diverse sample (46.1% female; 21.1% Maori, 14.1% Asian, and 54.6% European) was aged (SD) 8.4 (0.9) mo. More than one-quarter of households had high socioeconomic deprivation. Almost half (45.3%) of infants consumed an infant food pouch on ≥1 recall day [mean (SD), 1.3 (0.9) times/d], obtaining 218 (124) kJ of energy on each eating occasion. Comparable numbers for all commercial infant and toddler foods (CITFs) were 78.0%, contributing 2.2 (1.6) and 140 (118) kJ of energy. Infant food pouches provided 25.5% of the total energy from complementary foods in those infants who consumed pouches on the recall days but just 11% in all infants. Median percentage contribution of infant food pouches to nutrient intake from complementary foods in consumers ranged from <1% (added sugars and retinol) to >30% (carbohydrate, total sugars, fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin C). CITF contributed 21.4% of energy from complementary foods for infant consumers, with median percentage contribution ranging from 0.1% (retinol) to 40.3% (iron). CONCLUSIONS: Infant food pouches make relatively small contributions to energy intake in infants but are important sources of carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins A, C, and B-6. Almost half of the total sugars consumed from complementary foods is provided by these pouches. This trial was registered at the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry as ACTRN12620000459921.

Proper treatment of hypersaline and nutrient-rich food industry process water (FIPW) is challenging in conventional wastewater plants. Insufficient treatment leads to serious environmental hazards. However, bioremediation of FIPW with an indigenous microbial community can not only recover nutrients but generate biomass of diverse applications. In this study, monoculture of Halamphora coffeaeformis, together with synthetic bacteria isolated from a local wastewater plant, successfully recovered 91% of NH4+-N, 78% of total nitrogen, 95% of total phosphorus as well as 82% of total organic carbon from medium enriched with 10% FIPW. All identified organic acids and amino acids, except oxalic acid, were completely removed after 14 days treatment. A significantly higher biomass concentration (1.74 g L-1) was achieved after 14 days treatment in the medium with 10% FIPW than that in a nutrient-replete lab medium as control. The harvested biomass could be a potential feedstock for high-value biochemicals and fertilizer production, due to fucoxanthin accumulation (3 mg g-1) and a fantastic performance in P assimilation. Metagenomic analysis revealed that bacteria community in the algal system, dominated by Psychrobacter and Halomonas, also contributed to the biomass accumulation and uptake of nutrients. Transcriptomic analysis further disclosed that multiple pathways, involved in translation, folding, sorting and degradation as well as transport and catabolism, were depressed in H. coffeaeformis grown in FIPW-enriched medium, as compared to the control. Collectively, the proposed one-step strategy in this work offers an opportunity to achieve sustainable wastewater management and a way towards circular economy.

BACKGROUND: One of the greatest challenges in using Lactobacillus acidophilus as a probiotic is acid stress. The current research aimed to identify substances that help L. acidophilus resist acid stress; this was achieved through assessing its nutrient consumption patterns under various pH conditions. RESULTS: The consumption rates of alanine, uracil, adenine, guanine, niacin, and manganese were consistently higher than 60% for L. acidophilus LA-5 cultured at pH 5.8, 4.9, and 4.4. The consumption rates of glutamic acid + glutamine and thiamine increased with decreasing pH and were higher than 60% at pH 4.9 and 4.4. The viable counts of L. acidophilus LA-5 were significantly increased under the corresponding acidic stress conditions (pH 4.9 and 4.4) through the appropriate addition of either alanine (3.37 and 2.81 mmol L-1), glutamic acid + glutamine (4.77 mmol L-1), guanine (0.13 and 0.17 mmol L-1), niacin (0.02 mmol L-1), thiamine (0.009 mmol L-1), or manganese (0.73 and 0.64 mmol L-1) (P < 0.05). The viable counts of L. acidophilus LA-5 cultured in a medium supplemented with combined nutritional factors was 1.02-1.03-fold of the counts observed in control medium under all acid conditions (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Alanine, glutamic acid + glutamine, guanine, niacin, thiamine, and manganese can improve the growth of L. acidophilus LA-5 in an acidic environment in the present study. The results will contribute to optimizing strategies to enhance the acid resistance of L. acidophilus and expand its application in the fermentation industry. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study aimed at exploring the effects of γ-polyglutamic acid on the growth of desert alfalfa and the soil microorganisms in the rhizosphere. The study examined the effects of varying concentrations of γ-polyglutamic acid (0%-CK, 2%-G1, 4%-G2, 6%-G3) on sandy soil, the research investigated its impact on the growth characteristics of alfalfa, nutrient content in the rhizosphere soil, and the composition of bacterial communities. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in soil organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, and available phosphorus content among the G1, G2, and G3 treatments. Compared to CK, the soil nutrient content in the G2 treatment increased by 14.81-186.67%, showing the highest enhancement. In terms of alfalfa growth, the G2 treatment demonstrated the best performance, significantly increasing plant height, chlorophyll content, above-ground biomass, and underground biomass by 54.91-154.84%. Compared to the CK treatment, the number of OTUs (operational taxonomic units) in the G1, G2, and G3 treatments increased by 14.54%, 8.27%, and 6.84%, respectively. The application of γ-polyglutamic acid altered the composition and structure of the bacterial community, with Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteriota, and Gemmatimonadota accounting for 84.14-87.89% of the total bacterial community. The G2 treatment significantly enhanced the diversity and evenness of soil bacteria in the rhizosphere. Redundancy analysis revealed that organic matter, total nitrogen, total potassium, moisture content, and pH were the primary factors influencing the structure of bacterial phyla. At the genus level, moisture content emerged as the most influential factor on the bacterial community. Notably, moisture content exhibited a strong positive correlation with Acidobacteriota, which in turn was positively associated with indicators of alfalfa growth. In summary, the application of γ-polyglutamic acid at a 4% ratio has the potential for improving sandy soil quality, promoting plant growth, and regulating the rhizosphere microbial community.

Background: Micronutrients are necessary for proper growth and development of the human body, though required in small amounts. Dietary intake of these micronutrients by lactating women is essential for their own health as well as children's overall growth and development. objective of present study is to assess the adequacy of dietary B-group vitamins intake during lactation and to find out the factors associated with their inadequate intake. Design and methods: It was a analysis of data from prospective cohort study for 10 months carried out among 340 Scheduled Tribes mothers in 10 clusters in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Data collection was done using a 24 h dietary recall questionnaire. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: All the mothers (n = 340) were not having adequate intake of Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine, Pantothenic acid, Biotin and Folic acid. Methyl cobalamin intake was inadequate in 37.5% mothers (n = 136). The mean intake of Vitamin B12 was 40.98 + 42.8 (SD) µg/day. Age at marriage, location and parity were significantly associated with inadequate intake of Vitamin B12. Conclusions: The current diet pattern of mothers of vulnerable groups might affect the growth and development of the infant. We strongly recommend for supplementation of B-group vitamins to pregnant and lactating women in India.

To evaluate the efficacy and nutrition of single-anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) in Chinese obese patients in the first postoperative year. Clinical data of 66 obese patients who underwent SADI-S surgery at China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University from November 2018 to May 2022 were retrospectively collected. The weight, body mass index (BMI), percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL), and percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) were recorded at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Moreover, metabolic disease remission and nutrient deficiencies were assessed at 1 year postoperatively. Overall, 66 patients (38 males and 28 females) were recruited, with a mean age of 35 (18-61) years and an average preoperative BMI of 42.94 kg/m2. Before surgery, 38 patients had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), 46 patients had hyperuricemia (HUA), 45 patients had hypertension (HTN), 35 patients had hyperlipidemia, 12 patients had hypercholesterolemia, 12 patients had hyper-low-density lipoproteinemia, and 14 patients had gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms (GERD). All patients had undergone a DaVinci robotic or laparoscopic SADI-S surgery, and none converted to laparotomy or died. Four patients developed postoperative complications and were cured and discharged after conservative treatment or surgical treatment. At 3, 6 and 12 months, the average %EWL was 62.07 ± 26.56, 85.93 ± 27.92, and 106.65 ± 29.65%, %TWL was 22.67 ± 4.94, 32.10 ± 5.18, and 40.56 ± 7.89%, respectively. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), uric acid (UA), triglycerides (TG), blood pressure (BP), and other indexes were significantly lower after one year post-surgery compared with the preoperative period (P < 0.05). The remission rates of T2DM, HUA, HTN, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hyper-low-density lipoproteinemia 1 year after surgery were 100, 65.2, 62.2, 94.3, 100, and100%, respectively. One year after surgery, the remission rate of GERD was 71.4% (10/14), the rate of new occurrence of GERD was 12.1% (8/66), and the overall incidence rate was 18.2% (12/66). Except for vitamin B12(vit B12), the other nutrient indexes were significantly decreased after 1 year of surgery relative to levels before surgery (P < 0.05). The deficiency rates for vitamin A (vit A), vitamin E (vit E), zinc ion (Zn), and folic acid (FA) were higher (45.5, 25.8, 24.2, and 16.7%, respectively); however, there were no related clinical symptoms. SADI-S had significant effects on weight loss and metabolic disease remission. The main nutrient deficiencies after SADI-S were vit A, vit E, Zn, and FA deficiencies. The long-term efficacy and safety of SADI-S warrant further follow-up.

Anaerobic digestion can provide benefits not only from the perspective of renewable energy production but also in the form of fertilization effect and increased retention of C in soils after digestate application. This study consisted of two phases, where the first phase assessed the suitability of carbon-rich co-feedstocks for methane production via laboratory testing. The second phase assessed the balance and stability of C before and after anaerobic digestion by systematic digestate characterization, and by evaluating its carbon retention potential using a modeling approach. The results indicated that pyrolysis chars had a negligible effect on the methane production potential of cattle manure, while wheat straw expectedly increased methane production. Thus, a mixture of cattle manure and wheat straw was digested in pilot-scale leach-bed reactors and compared with undigested manure and straw. Although the total amount of C in the digestate was lower than in the untreated feedstocks, the digestion process stabilized C and was modeled to be more effective in retaining C in the soil than untreated cattle manure and wheat straw. In addition, digestion converted 23-27 % of the C into valuable methane, increasing the valorization of the total C in the feedstock. Considering anaerobic digestion processes as a strategy to optimize both carbon and nutrient valorization provides a more holistic approach to addressing climate change and improving soil health.

Advanced oxidation processes have been widely applied as a post-treatment solution to remove residual organic compounds in water reuse schemes. However, UV/TiO2 photocatalysis, which provides a sustainable option with no continuous chemical addition, has very rarely been studied to treat anaerobically treated effluents. In the current study, the removal of organics and nutrients from an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) effluent is evaluated during adsorption and photocatalysis processes under various conditions of TiO2 dose and UV intensity and compared to the effluent from an aerobic membrane bioreactor (AeMBR). The sequence for preferential adsorption on TiO2 was found to be phosphorus, inorganic carbon and then ammonia/organic carbon were found. The competing effect between the organics and nutrients, along with the low UV transmission efficiency caused by the need for high doses of TiO2, ultimately compromise the organic removal efficiency in the AnMBR permeate. TiO2 dosage was found to have a greater impact than UV intensity on improving the overall removal performance as nutrients are competing for the adsorption site but are not photodegraded. Under the same operational condition, the UV/TiO2 photocatalysis displayed a higher removal efficiency of organic matter and phosphorus in the AeMBR effluent due to a lower initial organics concentration and absence of ammonia as compared to the AnMBR effluent.

The study investigated the possibility of using chitin flakes as an unconventional sorbent for the removal of orthophosphates and nitrates from greenhouse wastewater (GW). The effluent parameters were as follows: 66.2 mg P-PO4/L, 566.0 mg N-NO3/L, 456.0 mg S-SO4/L, 13.7 mg Cl-/L, 721 mg Ca2+/L, 230 mg Mg2+/L, hardness 11.3 °dH, and pH 5.4. The scope of the research included determinations of the influence of pH on GW composition and the efficiency of nutrient sorption, the kinetics of nutrient sorption, the influence of the dose of chitin flakes on the effectiveness of nutrient binding and the maximum sorption capacity of the sorbent. The sorption of P-PO4 on the tested sorbent was most effective at pH 4, and the sorption of N-NO3 at pH 2. The equilibrium time of sorption of both nutrients from GW to chitin depended on the sorbent dose and ranged from 150 to 180 min. The sorbent dose of 40 g/L enabled removing 90% of orthophosphates and 5.7% of nitrates from the wastewater. The maximum sorption capacity of CH towards P-PO4 and N-NO3 contained in the GW was 3.20 mg/g and 3.04 mg/g, respectively. In turn, the sorption of calcium and magnesium ions on chitin flakes was completely ineffective.

Rapid technological development in agriculture and fast urbanization have increased nutrient losses in Europe. High nutrient export to seas causes coastal eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. This study aims to assess the river exports of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), and identify required reductions to avoid coastal eutrophication in Europe under global change. We modelled nutrient export by 594 rivers in 2050 for a baseline scenario using the new MARINA-Nutrients model for Europe. Nutrient export to European seas is expected to increase by 13-28% under global change. Manure and fertilizers together contribute to river export of N by 35% in 2050. Sewage systems are responsible for 70% of future P export by rivers. By 2050, the top ten polluted rivers for N and P host 42% of the European population. Avoiding future coastal eutrophication requires over 47% less N and up to 77% less P exports by these polluted rivers.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the elimination diet, dietary composition may influence disease severity in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) through modulation of the immune response. AIM: To explore the immunomodulatory role of nutrition before and during elimination diet in adult EoE patients. METHODS: Nutritional intake was assessed in 39 Dutch adult EoE patients participating in the Supplemental Elemental Trial (Dutch trial registry NL6014, NTR6778) using 3-day food diaries. In this randomized controlled trial, diagnosed patients received either a four-food elimination diet alone (FFED) or FFED with addition of an amino acid-based formula for 6 weeks. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to assess associations between the intake of nutrients and food groups per 1000 kCal and peak eosinophil count/high power field (PEC), both at baseline and after 6 weeks. RESULTS: At baseline, we found a statistically significant negative (thus favorable) relationship between the intake of protein, total fat, phosphorus, zinc, vitamin B12, folate, and milk products and PEC (p < .05), while calcium (p = .058) and full-fat cheese/curd (p = .056) were borderline (favorably) significant. In contrast, total carbohydrates, prepacked fruit juice, and white bread were significantly positively (unfavorable) related to PEC (p < .05), while ultra-processed meals (p = .059) were borderline (unfavorably) significant. After dietary intervention, coffee/tea were significantly negatively (favorably) related to PEC, hummus/legumes were significantly positively (unfavorably) related with PEC, while peanuts were borderline significantly positively related (p = .058). CONCLUSION: Dietary composition may be related to inflammation in adult EoE patients. High-quality and anti-inflammatory diets may be a promising adjuvant therapy in the dietary management of EoE.

In this double-blind placebo-controlled randomized investigation, we assessed the tolerability of glutamine in older adults recruited from three daycare centers. The relevance of studying glutamine supplementation in elderly patients lies in its potential to provide a well-tolerated intervention. Glutamine, a crucial amino acid, plays a vital role in various physiological processes, including immune function and protein synthesis. Understanding its impact on older adults is essential, given the potential implications for their health and well-being. Participants received a daily dose of 12.4 g of oral effervescent glutamine (EGln group) or maltodextrin (placebo group) for 60 days. Fifteen patients from each group completed the study. The mean ages were 77.0±9.1 and 79.0±6.9 years for the EGln and placebo groups, respectively. We evaluated body mass index, aminogram, hemogram, plasma levels of glucose, prealbumin, albumin, urea, creatinine, uric acid, C-reactive protein, vitamin D, calcium, sodium, potassium, and the plasma activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. Notably, we quantified a broad array of inflammatory markers and growth factors providing a holistic understanding of the potential effects of glutamine supplementation. The results demonstrated that oral glutamine did not induce significant changes in any evaluated parameters, and no adverse effects were reported. This finding suggested that the dosage of glutamine used in this study was well-tolerated and safe. This information contributes to the broader understanding of glutamine supplementation, emphasizing its safety and supporting its potential as a viable intervention for maintaining health in aging individuals.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the United States food supply and food choices make examination of temporal changes in micronutrient intake and their effect on meeting nutrient recommendations necessary. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine 15-year trends of the contribution of foods and beverages (FB) and dietary supplements (DSs) to meeting nutrient recommendations among United States adults aged 19 y or older and compare usual mean intake distributions of FB alone with those of FB+DSs with dietary reference intakes [percentage below the estimated average requirement (%AI)]. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used food, beverage, and DSs intake data from NHANES 2003-2018 (N = 39,925) to determine usual mean intakes for 21 micronutrients. Changes in intakes from FB and from FB+DSs, by sex, were compared in a time-trend analysis of 2-y cycles. Changes in mean intake as %AI were determined. RESULTS: Over the time studied, United States adults underconsumed vitamins A, C, D, E, and K; calcium; potassium; magnesium; and choline, even when DSs intake was included. Sodium was overconsumed. There is concern that during a low-risk pregnancy, women are consuming more than recommended (400 µg/day) supplemental folic acid and may not meet recommendations for other nutrients. The objective of this study was to determine folic acid supplement use and dietary folate intakes in the second trimester (week 18) of pregnancy in women (n = 2996) in the Canadian CHILD cohort study. Vitamin B12 and choline intakes were also assessed because they are metabolically related to folate. The majority of participants (71.6%) were consuming a daily prenatal supplement. Twenty-eight percent of women (n = 847) reported consuming a folic acid supplement and of these women, 45.3% had daily supplemental folic acid intakes above the upper intake level (UL; 1000 µg/day). Daily dietary folate intakes were (mean (SD)) 575 (235) DFE µg/day. In contrast, only 24.8% of women met the dietary choline adequate intake (AI) recommendation (AI ≥ 450 mg/day) with a mean (SD) intake of 375 (151) mg/day. Further understanding of the impact of supplemental folic acid intake above the UL and low choline intake during pregnancy requires further investigation.

This study aimed to examine the morphological, physiological, and biochemical alterations occurring in Notopterygium incisum seeds throughout their developmental stages, with the objective of establishing a theoretical foundation for the cultivation of superior quality seeds. The experimental materials utilized in this study were the seeds of N. incisum at various stages of development following anthesis. Through the employment of morphological observation and plant physiology techniques, the external morphology, nutrients, enzyme activity, and endogenous hormones of the seeds were assessed. The results revealed a transition in seed coat color from light green to brown during the growth and development of N. incisum seeds. Additionally, as the seeds matured, a decrease in water content was observed. Conversely, starch content exhibited a progressive increase, while sucrose content displayed fluctuations. At 7 days after anthesis, the soluble sugar content attained its highest level of 4.52 mg·g~(-1), whereas the soluble protein content reached its maximum of 6.00 mg·g~(-1) at 14 days after anthesis and its minimum of 4.94 mg·g~(-1) at 42 days after anthesis. The activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) exhibited an initial increase, followed by a decrease, and eventually reached a stable state. Conversely, the activities of catalase(CAT) and peroxidase(POD) demonstrated a decrease initially, followed by an increase, and then another decrease. The levels of the four endogenous hormones, namely gibberellin(GA_3), zeatin riboside(ZR), auxin(IAA), and abscisic acid(ABA), in the seeds displayed significant variations, with IAA and ABA exhibiting considerably higher levels compared to the other hormones. The levels of plant growth-promoting hormones, represented by IAA, generally displayed a pattern of initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease during seed development, while the plant growth-inhibiting hormone ABA showed the opposite trend. The findings indicate that the alterations in nutrient composition, antioxidant enzyme activity, and endogenous hormone levels vary throughout the maturation process of N. incisum seeds. These observations hold relevance for the cultivation of N. incisum seeds.

The effect of hydrodynamic mixing on controlling Microcystis blooms or changing the algal community to diatom dominance has been widely studied; however, the effects of colonial Microcystis biomass on the development of the algal community are poorly known. Here, in order to study the changes in Microcystis blooms under continuous aeration mixing, an experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with factors of varying biomass of Microcystis and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment in summer. There were three chlorophyll a (Chl-a) levels in six treatments: low Chl-a level of 68.4 µg L-1 (treatments L, L-E), medium Chl-a level of 468.7 µg L-1 (treatments M, M-E), and high Chl-a level of 924.1 µg L-1 (treatments H, H-E). Treatments L-E, M-E and H-E were enriched with the same inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. During the experiment of 30 days, the concentration of Microcystis and Chl-a decreased, and diatom Nitzschia palea cells appeared in all the treatments, which became dominant in treatments M, M-E, H and H-E, with the highest biomass of 9.41 ± 1.96 mg L-1 Nitzschia in treatment H-E on day 30. The rank order of the biomass of Nitzschia from low to high was (L = L-E) < (M = M-E) < H < H-E (P < 0.05). In addition, Nitzschia cells were aggregates attached to Microcystis colonies in all the treatments. The results showed that the initial biomass of colonial Microcystis affected the algal shift from Microcystis dominance to Nitzschia dominance. However, the enriched inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus was beneficial for the Nitzschia increase in the high biomass treatment alone. The shift from Microcystis dominance to diatom dominance under continuous aeration mixing may be caused by low light conditions as well as the nutrients released from Microcystis decay. Moreover, the aerobic condition caused by aeration mixing maintained the colonial mucilaginous sheath to support the growth of Nitzschia cells in aggregation. This study found for the first time that Microcystis blooms could shift to diatom Nitzschia dominance in aggregates. It provided a method to control and manipulate Microcystis blooms to diatom dominance through continuous aeration mixing to proper biomass of Microcystis colonies. The shift to diatoms dominance would provide more high quality food organisms for aquaculture and be beneficial to the material cycling and energy flowing in food web dynamics.

The ultraphytoplankton composition and dynamics were assessed during a Saharan dust event occurring off the southern Tunisian coasts during the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE Trans-Mediterranean oceanographic cruise. The composition of atmospheric dust was characterized in terms of nutriments and trace metals. Data-assimilative hydrodynamic model revealed no differences in the hydrological features along the sampling track and almost no water transport occurred during the period of atmospheric deposition. Dust deposition increased the growth rates and the productivity of the major phytoplanktonic cytometric groups, resulting in the highest surface biomass along the Mediterranean transect. One group, distinguished by low fluorescence and nanoplanktonic size, reacted to dust deposition within hours, exhibiting the highest growth rate and net productivity. The dust composition showed a substantial enrichment with organic phosphorous representing (56 % of Total phosphorus) and trace metals mainly Fe, Mn and V.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the nutritional content and quality of the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC) menus delivered to earthquake victims after the 2023 earthquakes in Kahramanmaras, Türkiye. METHODS: The menus of general, search-rescue, diabetes, and celiac were obtained from the TRC following the magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.6 Kahramanmaras earthquakes. The nutrient content of the menus was evaluated with the Nutrient Rich Food (NRF20.3) score. In addition, the menus' energy, macronutrient, and micronutrient contents were compared with the dietary reference intake values of the Türkiye Dietary Guideline-2022, European Food Safety Authority, and Food and Drug Administration. RESULTS: The general menu was insufficient to meet the daily requirements of vitamin D, vitamin K, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium for earthquake victims. The sodium, phosphorous, and omega-6/omega-3 ratios were much higher than the recommended intakes. The NRF20.3 score of the diabetes menu was significantly higher than the search-rescue and celiac menus (P < 0.05). The energy content of the search-rescue menu was significantly higher than that of other menus (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The several nutritional risks were determined in TRC menus for earthquake victims who suffered from the Kahramanmaras earthquakes. Several supplementation programs can be applied to the earthquake regions to obtain strength immunity and effectively challenge posttraumatic stress symptoms.

Increases in fluxes of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the environment have led to negative impacts affecting drinking water, eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Because of the importance, scale, and complexity of these issues, it may be useful to consider methods for prioritizing nutrient research in representative drainage basins within a regional or national context. Two systematic, quantitative approaches were developed to (1) identify basins that geospatial data suggest are most impacted by nutrients and (2) identify basins that have the most variability in factors affecting nutrient sources and transport in order to prioritize basins for studies that seek to understand the key drivers of nutrient impacts. The "impact" approach relied on geospatial variables representing surface-water and groundwater nutrient concentrations, sources of N and P, and potential impacts on receptors (i.e., ecosystems and human health). The "variability" approach relied on geospatial variables representing surface-water nutrient concentrations, factors affecting sources and transport of nutrients, model accuracy, and potential receptor impacts. One hundred and sixty-three drainage basins throughout the contiguous United States were ranked nationally and within 18 hydrologic regions. Nationally, the top-ranked basins from the impact approach were concentrated in the Midwest, while those from the variability approach were dispersed across the nation. Regionally, the top-ranked basin selected by the two approaches differed in 15 of the 18 regions, with top-ranked basins selected by the variability approach having lower minimum concentrations and larger ranges in concentrations than top-ranked basins selected by the impact approach. The highest ranked basins identified using the variability approach may have advantages for exploring how landscape factors affect surface-water quality and how surface-water quality may affect ecosystems. In contrast, the impact approach prioritized basins in terms of human development and nutrient concentrations in both surface water and groundwater, thereby targeting areas where actions to reduce nutrient concentrations could have the largest effect on improving water availability and reducing ecosystem impacts.
